[instrumental music]

Alright, turn around. Move.

Give me the keys.

Now nobody moves! This is a stickup!

You take one more step and you're dead.

Now you two get in that vault and fill this bag.

Move! Move!

Now come on. Let's go!

You move over there. Come on.

Alright. Alright, you.

Come on, move over here. Come on.

Now come on, man, come on. Hurry up, will you?

'We ain't got all day!'

Hurry it up in there!

Come on, let's go with that money!

If you don't wanna k*ll her, you better not move

for five minutes!

Now hold it right there.

Drop it!

Come on, let's go and drop it!

[g*nsh*t]

Tonight's episode, The Sanctuary.

On November 16, less than an hour

after the Peoples National Bank in Bakersfield, California

was held up and a deputy sheriff k*lled

the FBI entered the case.

Inspector Lewis Erskine who was currently in the area

immediately assumed on the scene supervision.

With him was Special Agent Tom Colby.

- Stevens, good to see you. - Inspector.

- Good to se you. - Tom Colby.

Larry Stevens, Tom.

Blowout stopped them.

They hotwire the car when they stole it.

Didn't have any keys to get in the trunk for the spare.

Have you, uh, notified the highway patrol?

Right. The roadblocks already up.

We're concentrating further on south

since that's the direction they were heading.

Well, has the, uh, Los Angeles police been alerted?

In case they get through before the roadblocks were up.

Yes, sir.

Give me one of those.

Maybe three, four hours till we get to Mexican border

and then home free.

From now on, nothing but champagne and..

[vehicle slows down]

Cops.

- Ah! - Come on!

I told you I got nothing to do with no bank job.

I was just bumming a ride when all of a sudden

this creep I'm with says jump.

So..

So why did you jump if you hadn't done anything wrong?

Well?

I changed my mind. I wanna call an attorney.

Alright, get him his phone.

Mr. Ward's on the phone, Lew. You can take the call in there.

Thanks.

Yes, Arthur.

There's no doubt, Lewis.

The prints on the man you are holding

identify him as John Carl Winslow.

'He's got a long arrest record for armed robbery.'

And the other man?

The latents weren't very clear. It'll take some time.

- Winslow isn't talking, huh? - Hasn't and won't.

Is there anything in his file to suggest who his partner was?

One thing, his cellmate at San Quentin

was paroled two months ago.

His description pretty well fits that of the triggerman.

Does the name Nate Phelps ring a bell?

- The ball player? - That's right.

From pro football star to this in three years.

I wonder.

His, uh, parole officer's been notified.

He's checking his last known address.

If he has disappeared, we'll put out a general alert.

I'll see ya.

She ain't home.

Hey, man. What do you know? I was right.

- You are-- - I know who I am, boy.

What I wanna know, who the devil are you?

Wiley, Wiley Brooks.

Mr. Phelps, don't you remember Lenore's kid brother?

'Gee, I ain't seen you since you played--'

You ain't seem me at all.

Read me?

Like that, huh? Okay, sure.

No sweat, man. I was born blind.

I'll let you in. Lenore and I'll be back anytime.

What I wanna know is, uh, why are you being so helpful?

Anybody been asking about me?

Well?

Take it easy, man. You're in good hands.

Now here.

Get me some gin.

And a paper.

Keep the rest.

What do you know? You sure still go first class.

Second floor, apartment B.

Mr. Phelps.

Saw you a few years back playing against the Packers.

Man, you sure could run.

Inspector Erskine, I'm Special Agent Harry Dane.

- Harry, good to see you. - I'm Tom Colby.

- Well, welcome to Los Angeles. - Yeah, thanks.

Identification division just called, inspector.

They said the latence you found on that abandoned car

are definitely Nate Phelps' prints.

Hmm. Well, any further word on his whereabouts?

Well, nothing beyond the earlier informant reports

putting Phelps back in his old neighborhood.

Yeah, that's probably the logical place he'd go for help.

But we may not have as much help tracking him down.

We've got friends here, too, inspector.

I was born in LA

just about three blocks away from where Phelps grew up.

We even used to play together.

[phone buzzes]

Dane.

'Yeah, I'll talk to him.'

Thanks.

Yeah, I'll talk to you soon.

Well, we got an address on Lenore Brooks.

That's Phelps' old girlfriend.

Well, let's see if she's there now.

Well, now look who came slummin'.

Hello, Lenore.

How did you get in? Was it the fire escape or the landlady?

Your kid brother.

Now if he keeps making mistakes like that

he's gonna need his own place.

Just split, baby.

I only entertain friends.

Oh, I thought we were better than friends.

No, let me guess.

You're in trouble or you're broke?

Or did some lady walk out on you?

- Sure-- - Better, Nate.

After three years, what did you expect?

A birthday cake to celebrate your return? Now just get out.

- Go on. Get out, Nate! - Are you through?

Is it all out of your system?

Is it?

You gotta listen to me, Lenore. I need your help.

I need it like I never needed anything in my life.

Not the police again, Nate.

Not again.

I k*lled a cop.

'I didn't mean to, but..'

God.

I, I wanna keep you out of it and I will.

But I want you to find my cousin Paul for me.

He's a smart boy. He's got a lot of connections.

He'll be able to get me out of the country.

You want money? Okay, I'll pay for it.

Save your money, Nate. This one's on the house.

I'm sorry, Lenore. I-I had, I had no right.

Don't press, Nate.

I'm gonna do what you want.

Only don't press and don't con me.

I'm not expecting anybody. You can relax till I get back.

[knock on door]

- Who is it? - 'It's me, Wiley.'

Fuzz downstairs, come on.

- Thanks, man. - Come on, you better take off.

Tell Lenore when she, when she gets back

I'll be holed up at the Grand Hotel at Room 12, hear?

[knocks]

[knocks]

You looking for somebody? I'm the manager.

Ah, yes, we are. Lenore Brooks.

Uh, we're with the FBI.

Um, she left a minutes ago.

Uh, have you, um

have you seen this man around?

'Possibly with her?'

Um, no. Can't say that I have.

We'd like to check her apartment.

Okay.

Nothing.

[sighs]

Thank you.

Let's put her under surveillance.

Who else is close to Phelps in the neighborhood?

Well, there's Paul Laraby.

He runs with a pretty rough g*ng down here.

Let's look him up.

[laughter]

- 'I hear that was a--' - 'Are you kiddin' me?'

Ellis Deavers?

We're from the FBI.

I know where you're from, captain

and you're out of bounds.

Take it easy, Deavers.

All we wanna know is where Paul Laraby is.

You wanna rap with me in, captain?

Well, let me clue you in.

The next time you come, you leave him home.

You tell us where Laraby is

and maybe we won't have to come back.

Paul Laraby ain't here, right?

I think he's at the country club playing golf.

Besides, the grapevine says the catch

you're looking for is a guy named Nate Phelps

and he surely ain't here.

Where is he?

Oh, man.

I look at you and I don't believe it.

You don't really expect an answer, do you?

Phelps k*lled a police officer, Deavers.

I'm asking you to help us find him.

Alright, you asked.

Hey.

Hey.

Heard about your trouble, cousin.

Why did you come back to the old neighborhood?

I figured I wouldn't stand out as much.

Besides, I got friends here.

Hey, dude.

What are the odds of you getting me out of the country?

You mean, just across the border?

Hmm, I think they'll have that covered by now.

I gotta get far away.

No sweat, baby, I got friends who could do anything.

Beautiful.

[laughs]

Ah, I'll go see him right away. See what we can set up.

You stay here till I send word.

An hour, maybe less.

Good. You get going.

Where are you going?

I sleep afternoons, Nate.

I gotta be bright and pretty for the club.

Are you crazy? Didn't Wiley tell you

about the fuzz coming at the house?

Then I'll sleep some place else, Nate.

If I get picked up, don't worry.

I know how to keep my mouth shut.

It could be like it once was, baby.

I got money.

And once Paul pulls me out from under

we can go anywhere, do anything.

You can come with me.

You're not just using me in case Paul doesn't do

what you want him to do?

It has been three long years, Nate.

Oh, baby, I was all messed up.

Career's shot, juicing, no-no team willing to touch me.

So I ran away, but I'm not a kid no more.

Hang in there with me, baby.

We both are gonna have a new life.

Trust me, Lenore, just this one last time..

...and we can have anything we want.

No, nothing definite yet although we're questioning

every flophouse and motel around here.

Maybe his next move is to get out of the country

before the heat starts things melting.

Well, he's gonna find that tough.

We've got just about every exit blocked.

Well, don't underestimate him.

You can buy an awful lot of help with $50,000.

Keep me informed.

[sighs]

Spot anything?

Harry, there's a reference here

in Phelps' file about somebody called The Broker.

Does that mean anything to you?

He runs about every racket in the neighborhood.

He's smart, fast. Never been arrested.

I don't think Phelps would ever go to him.

Soon as his football career fell to pieces

he started running numbers with The Broker.

Phelps got caught and went to prison.

Broker never lifted a finger to help him.

There's no love lost there.

[phone buzzes]

Erskine.

I'll be right over.

It's Colby. He followed Deavers and someone else

to a pool hole on Jefferson Street.

Was that someone else Paul Laraby?

Description fits.

[knocks]

[knocks]

I'd ask you to sit down, man

but I don't want you to get the wrong idea.

You see, Nate, uh, we just had a meeting and--

And you decided I was too big a risk?

[scoffs] Oh.

Don't jive me, man.

I can smell a turndown a mile off.

It wasn't a decision we like making

but sometimes there's a thing called expedience--

If it was a no, then why did you drag me down?

And what is this? Some kind of a cute move to jack up the price?

Okay.

Name the figure.

I'm sorry, man.

- There is no figure. - Oh, man.

Cool it.

The vote's been taken and arguing ain't gonna change it.

Ten grand okay? I mean, that's a lot of--

Nothing.

Twice that and I got the same flash for you, man.

You wanna know why you were brought here?

Get out of the area, Phelps.

'Cause you got 24 hours. Dig?

Cop K*llers are a luxury this neighborhood can't afford

and we don't want your heat.

It's just, Nate, that, um

you got nothing to do with our scene.

I mean, you're just not relevant.

Relevant?

Man, them dudes are gonna burn me, man

and you tell me that I'm not relevant?

[blues music]

Hey, man. Hey!

It's the fuzz.

We'll cover the alley, Lew.

Ah.

Sorry, man, I didn't see ya.

[knocks]

You can't win them all, captain.

I don't have to, Deavers.

Just the last one.

You know, its pretty obvious Phelps was here.

Now somebody tipped him.

That boy who walked out, we've seen him before.

Uh, outside the girl's house.

He shouldn't be too hard to find.

He had on the St. Mary's jacket.

You think he knows where Phelps is headed?

Let's ask him.

[indistinct] no!

Well, you better have another, Nate

'cause people down here are gonna get sick of helping you

specially after Deavers tell them.

I'd rather ask the ask the devil for help than ask The Broker.

You can't trust him, Lenore.

He'd sell his own mother for a plate of grits.

For less!

Well, just offer him what you offered Deavers.

He'll play straight.

Listen, even to him, 10,000 is a lot of money, baby.

Besides, what choice you got?

The FBI and Deavers?

Alright.

If he isn't gone home, can you call your brother somewhere?

We can't go out there looking for The Broker, he can't.

And if I find him, what does he tell him?

To come here.

That I'm offering big money for a way out of the country.

Okay, Nate.

[blues music]

[phone ringing]

[indistinct chatter]

Hello.

Yeah, Lenore.

Hey, I'm calling all over you, Wiley.

Listen, I want you to find The Broker

and tell him Nate wants to see him, understand?

Yeah, yeah, but where do I look for him?

You know The Broker. He don't exactly advertise.

He wants to know how to locate him?

Wiley, Nate.

Listen, try the backroom in Tony's.

and the shoeshine stand on State Street.

Now if you can't find him

Eddie's Bail Bond.

But whatever you do, don't waste no time, hear?

You move.

I wouldn't, son.

FBI. We'd like to talk to you.

Hey, what do you know?

Look, how far inauguration done gone.

Okay, you saw me at the pool house, so what?

That's some big federal offence? You guys crack me up.

We believe you tipped Phelps once, maybe twice, Wiley.

That is a federal offence.

Look, man, it's late and I gotta hit the books.

- Where is he, Wiley? - Come on.

You wanna bust me? Swell.

I wanna see you prove something.

Phelps is some kind of hero to you, isn't he?

'I remember him, too, at his peak'

when he had everything going for him.

Yeah, he was a kind of a man a boy like you could look up to

but he's changed, Wiley.

He held up a bank, m*rder*d a policeman.

Look, I'm tired, see?

So you either take me in or I split.

Do you really wanna end up like Nate Phelps?

Climb off my back here. I'm through rappin'.

Think it over, Wiley. He's dangerous.

Your sister may be in a lot more trouble than she knows.

You know what this cigar costs, baby?

A buck.

You know how come I can afford it?

'Cause I'm a businessman.

What I got to sell never came cheap.

Well, ten grand, Broker, ain't exactly--

Oh, Nate baby, ten grand just pays the freight.

Nothing more.

For that, I can buy you seamen's papers

and a boat to South America in the morning

but that don't leave me no profit.

Oh, man, you know I'd like to help you out?

Square things between us, but, uh--

Fifteen grand, Broker.

Not a nickel more.

Twenty. Twenty?

Ten now and ten later.

Unh-unh.

It's your neck, man.

Okay.

But the cash when you deliver.

When Lenore and me are on that boat.

You know, I ain't kind of bread on me, baby.

You know I ain't that trusting.

[chuckles] Alright.

You know, the River Avenue Stadium Garage?

- Yeah. - Downstairs, fourth level.

Meet me there at 5:30 a.m.

Oh, Nate, this gives me a nice, warm feelin'.

Sort of like sending an old friend off on a honeymoon.

Later, brother.

I'm sorry to interrupt your dinner

but I knew you'd want this right away.

It came in about 15 minutes ago.

One of our agent picked up some interesting information

from an informant on the docks.

It seems that, uh, somebody's offering a lot of money

for a set of seamen's papers.

Three thousand dollars if you can get them by 5 a.m.

Does that somebody have a name?

No, he's just a description.

Tall, thin n*gro.

A very sharp dresser.

That sounds like Larry O., one of The Broker's boys.

You know, maybe I guessed wrong.

Maybe he did go to The Broker.

How can we find him?

Well, it's not that easy, inspector.

The Broker moves around a lot.

It'll take some checking.

Better put some agents on right away.

[phone buzzes]

Erskine.

Uh, just a minute.

Harry, it's for you.

Thanks. Yeah.

Alright.

Yeah, thanks, Bob.

Well, that was just about our last shot.

Agent checking on sources over the Calendar Room.

It's an after-hours club over in Emery Street.

Nothing.

Harry, in the places you checked

had anyone at least seen The Broker?

Well, no one that could admit it.

I wonder.

He used to own a piece of a garage

over near The Coliseum.

I heard he sold that a couple of months ago, but, uh..

Well, let's try it.

Right on time, huh, Nate?

- Is it all set? - Paper's right here.

The boat's The Angelina R, Pier 8.

Unh-unh.

One bad thing though, Nate.

It's gonna cost you the whole load.

'Fifty thousand dollars.'

That it right there, isn't it? In the briefcase?

I should've figured it.

Fifty thousand dollars for your life, baby.

I still think you're getting quite a bargain.

Give it to him, Nate. What is the difference?

Go to The Broker, you said! Trust him, you said!

[g*nshots]

Go.

- Nate! - I gotta get the papers.

No, Nate, listen. Somebody's coming.

[indistinct]

Get an ambulance.

Well, if it was Phelps, it looks like he got clear.

Get on the radio, Tom,

I want every available agent for a house-to-house search.

And notify the police while you're at it.

'Is that The Broker?'

[sighs]

He won't be any help. He's dead.

[siren wailing]

It's no good, Nate. You gotta have help.

- You need a doctor. - I gotta have a way out. A car.

Call Wiley. Phone's over there.

- He's got no car, Nate. - Well, tell him to borrow one.

Steal one. I got no time to argue with you.

It's too hot for him to bring in here. It's too open.

Tell him to bring it to The Coliseum, East End.

Now move. I said move!

Okay.

Well, whoever did the sh**ting doesn't figure to get very far.

There's blood on the staircase and on the exit door.

It was Phelps. He identified him.

- Oh. - Had his girlfriend with him.

[siren blaring]

This is good.

From here, we can see Wiley, anybody else who comes.

You want a cigarette, baby?

I'm okay.

What time is it?

Four, five years ago..

...I'd be lying awake in a hotel room.

We had to get up, get dressed, go to the stadium.

I never could sleep the day of the game.

I was good, Lenore.

I was the best that ever came from around here.

You're bleeding, baby--

The only thing that beat me was the bottle.

I could've licked it.

But it was them big folks and owners and managers.

They passed me around like I was a bag of garbage.

It was their fault what happened to me.

I didn't do nothing!

Stop lying to yourself, Nate.

Where the devil is Wiley?

St. Mary's on the jacket.

[dogs barking]

It could be him. I'll find out.

Notify Inspector Erskine and all units.

I'll follow him on foot.

This is Unit 3 to Inspector Erskine

and all the units on the special

'we have a foot surveillance on a suspect'

'believed to be Wiley Brooks'

'in the vicinity of Fifth and Jackson.'

'Suspect heading north.'

and see where he leads us. Unit 1 out.

What's near Fifth and Jackson?

The Coliseum.

Wiley!

Wiley!

Where's the car, man? Where did you leave the car?

There ain't gonna be one, Nate.

All I come for was my sister.

We're getting out, Lenore.

Gettin' out?

You know, I thought you were somethin'.

Yeah, big man!

But you turned out to be nothing but a two-bit hustler

going nowhere.

Nate, please! Nate.

That's right.

You're gonna sh**t me too, Nate?

Big man with a g*n.

Nate, don't.. Nate, leave him alone!

Uh, look!

[g*nsh*t]

[g*nsh*t]

[g*nsh*t]

FBI, Phelps. Drop the g*n!

The first man to move to me and I k*ll her!

Stay away and give me some room!

Let her go, Phelps.

If you really care, let me go, Nate.

I told you to stay away!

[g*nsh*t]

[g*nsh*t]

Let me try and talk to him, inspector.

I know him. Maybe he'll listen to me.

Go ahead.

Nate!

It's Harry Dane.

Let me come over.

Are you deaf, boy?

Stay back, Harry!

Don't be a fool, Nate.

You can't carry her forever.

'How far do you think you'll get'

'before you're too weak to drag her along?'

You use your head, Nate.

You still got a trial coming.

You play it our way.

'At least you'll still have a chance to live.'

I'm coming over, Nate.

'We'll talk about it.'

[g*n clicks]

[g*n clicks]

Is he the man in charge?

- He's the man. - May I talk to him?

Lew, Miss Brooks would like to talk to you for a second.

It's about my brother, Wiley.

He only came to stop me from helping Nate anymore

I swear it.

Oh, we'll see you get every chance to explain what happened.

- Thank you. - Miss Brooks.

Rough night, Harry?

They're all rough down here, inspector.

But it's gettin' better.

Nate Phelps was sentenced to life imprisonment for m*rder.

Lenore Brooks was convicted of harboring a federal fugitive

and was sentenced to a federal reformatory.

Wiley Brooks, a minor, was placed on probation.

[theme music]
