05x21 - Pressure Point

[intense music]

Uh, drink, Marty?

No, we gotta be going.

Well, can you stay a minute? I'd like to talk to you.

Lutcher.

Sit down, Marty. Please.

No, not a chance. The books are closed.

Nobody's been given membership in Cosa Nostra for years.

Oh, but that doesn't make any sense.

Every organization needs new blood.

Why are you so anxious to join the family?

You got all the benefits.

The franchises, the protection.

The family's full blessing.

Well, I appreciate the blessing, Marty, but uh...

...I could be out on the streets without a phone call.

Ah..

But if you were a member

it wouldn't be that easy.

Is that it?

I want in.

Sponsor me, Marty.

Why should I?

Oh, no reason.

I just thought it might help if..

If what?

If the price were right.

Do you know what the council hands out

for selling memberships?

Is, uh...

...fifty thousand dollars

worth the risk?

I told you.

You can't buy your way in.

[intense music]

[music continues]

You got a visitor.

Hello, Scott.

I hear your planning to set up a nice casino in the place, huh?

What do you want, Phil?

I..

I want a job. Oh, please, Scott.

Just anything, huh?

Just give me a chance again.

Look, I'm alright. See? Look.

Look, Phil, I've got some people in there.

Go home. Call me tomorrow.

I haven't got a home.

I've got nothing. Not one cent.

You've got everything, Scott.

We were gonna be partners.

You aced me out.

You aced yourself out.

I built that enterprise.

And you stuffed yourself into a bottle.

It was my investment.

Well, I bought you out.

'For a top dollar, top dollar.'

Now, if you don't have any more money, I'm sorry.

'But that's it.'

Some people might like to know you're...

...turning this place into a casino.

And about the people who are behind you.

Maybe some people you can't buy out.

'Go get, uh, yourself some food and a place to sleep.'

You may change your mind by tomorrow.

Ah, that's Phil Garett. He used to work for me.

I know. He's got a big mouth.

Well, he won't use it.

Are you sure?

He's bitter and he's got nothing to lose.

That's a bad combination.

Well, there's no harm, coming around once..

'It's not just once.'

I hear he's on your back all the time.

Always calling you and trying to get through to you.

'Tossing threats around.'

Oh? That I didn't know.

He could be real trouble.

We've got a big investment here.

You and me. And the family.

It'll be alright, Marty. I'll handle it.

It'll be alright.

Now, you just be sure.

I'll ring you tomorrow about that other matter.

[dramatic music]

I'll take the car.

You better make sure he's alright.

[Marvin Miller] "The FBI."

A Quinn Martin production.

Starring, Efrem Zimbalist Jr.

Also starring, Philip Abbott.

William Reynolds.

With guest stars Fred Beir..

...Frank Marth..

...Phyllis Love

and David Opatoshu, as Nolan Crist.

Tonight's episode, "Pressure Point".

[dramatic music]

On April 4th, Philip Rex Garrett

an alcoholic derelict was found in a Detroit alley

critically wounded by a g*nsh*t

and left for dead.

As he was being rushed to a nearby hospital

a letter, found among Garett's effects

was forwarded to FBI headquarters in Washington

where it was examined by agents in the documents section.

What have we got, Bill?

Well, Garett may have possibly been intoxicated

when he wrote this.

The parts that we can decipher

read almost like slurred speech patterns.

Anything new in Garett's condition?

Uh, no, he's still critical.

Can you bring any of this out?

I was just about to use infrared light on it.

[Lewis] '"To FBI, it will interest you to know'

'"I know about a syndicate gambling operation.'

"My old friend..

"...plans it about April.

I'll see he doesn't make it.."

Background information on Garett.

Well, he comes from a good family.

College education.

Yes, sir. But he didn't do much with it.

He dissipated a fair sized inheritance inside a year.

Started an arrest racket.

Drunk and disorderly.

Vagrancy.

Petty theft.

Well, he sure went downhill in a hurry.

Sounds as though he might've had help.

Tom, call the Detroit office

and bring them up to date on this.

And contact the criminal intelligence section.

See if they've heard anything

about the movement of gambling devices.

Yes, sir.

I'd like to know more about Garett's background.

We might be able to identify this, this old friend.

Gentlemen, that's enough for tonight, huh?

Uh, Marty, turn that lamp down, please.

It's not easy after a cataract operation.

- Mr. Crist. - Mm-hmm.

Just, uh, one more point of business.

I'd like to sponsor a man for membership.

Scott Rogers.

Why?

Well, I think he deserves it.

Look at the business he's built.

He's too good to keep on the outside.

He's young.

Well, we need youth.

Maybe.

We'll watch him a little longer.

Thank you for considering it, Mr. Crist.

Goodnight, Marty.

Uh, Marty.

That, uh, real estate operation in Holbrook..

Went well for you?

No, it, uh, it fell apart.

But I thought you heard.

Oh, yeah, I, I did. Yeah.

Uh, what about the creosote plant?

Oh, it's doing fine.

Not according to your last month's statement.

Your cash reserve must be getting low.

Well, a little. But I'm not hurting.

Good boy. Yeah, that's good.

Scott Rogers.

First arrested in Detroit at age 20 for violating

local gambling ordinances.

He operated his own crap games.

From there, he branched out into the big time

and went into a business partnership with Philip Garrett.

Garrett supplied the money and Rogers, the brains.

'Apparently, Rogers bought him out about two years ago.'

Is Rogers a Cosa Nostra member?

No, but he operates under their protection.

Does he have any legitimate businesses?

Yes, a number of them.

He maybe planning to use one of them to front

a new gambling casino.

We better put him under surveillance.

Information coming through from Las Vegas.

[printer clicking]

'"Unknown subjects.

'"Possible movement gambling devices..'

'...between Nevada-Michigan.'

"Informant reports to truckloads slot machines left Nevada

"April 5, last.

'"Shipment believed headed your area.'

"No description, vehicles or license numbers

"available to date.

"Following serial numbers of slot machines

supplied by informant."

If they left on the fifth, I don't think

they have time to get here yet.

Unless they're driving straight through.

At best, that doesn't give us too much time.

Of course, the trucks could've been supplied locally.

Doug, better make a check

of all trucking and leasing companies.

Assemble a special squad and put them on a standby alert.

[instrumental music]

Oh, there's no problem.

It'll have to be approved by the rest of the council

but, that's just a formality.

Well, you're practically a member.

Why'd you have to sh**t him?

Phil Garrett. Why?

He was a harmless drunk.

He wouldn't have done anybody any harm.

I don't like it.

Well, neither do we.

But sometimes, it's necessary.

For self protection.

Relax, Scott.

You've got to leave these things to us.

You're going to be ready to open the first of the week?

As soon as the rest of the equipment gets here.

It should be in tonight.

I'll call you if I hear anything.

[dramatic music]

'Martin Rawll.'

'He's out of the Nolan Crist Mafia family.'

The warehouse belongs to Rogers. Detroit salvage company.

We suspect that's where the casino is to be located.

I remember Rawll.

I'm sure he has good reason to remember me.

I arrested his brother a couple of years ago

on an extortion charge.

He was present at the trial when I testified.

I see.

Do you suppose he's supplying material services to Rogers?

I doubt it.

Anything to link them together?

He's probably taking the payoff for the gambling franchise.

I want to see a current summary on him.

What's the surveillance report on Rogers?

Well, he arrived at his residence

about half an hour ago and he's had no visitors.

The surveillance units are in place around the warehouse.

No sign of the trucks.

We have units, um, at the Fisher, Gresham

Jefferson accesses.

Uh, the rest of the agents in the special squad

are being kept in reserve here.

Alright, maintain constant radio contact.

Doug, call the US attorney and tell him

what we have in Las Vegas. We'll need a warrant.

I'll ask for one covering gambling devices

and shipping documents.

[instrumental music]

[music continues]

- Scot - Go to bed.

Oh.

Is there something I can help you with?

- Did I ask you? - No.

Why don't you let me help you?

Just go to bed, Tracy. Please, just go to bed!

Scott, I have never tried to mix into your business.

I've tried to be the kind of wife you wanted.

- Just stay in the background. - Yes..

But, I have known all along

that you weren't making all this money honestly.

'I've had an idea of the kind of people'

'you've been dealing with.'

Now something terrible has happened. I can see it.

What is it?

Something I should've expected.

But it still hurts.

Phil Garrett.

I read about him getting shot.

'I didn't tell you'

but he was here at the house that night

'looking for you.'

And you sent him to the warehouse?

Yes.

He looked so desperate.

It wasn't me, Trace.

I didn't want him hurt.

Oh, why don't we get out of all this?

[phone rings]

Hello.

I'll be right over.

It's too late.

[truck revving]

DE-23 to control.

Control. Go ahead DE-23.

'Two semi trucks, sir.'

Approaching down the Gresham street access.

Approximately 40 foot van-type carriers, green tractors.

They're moving into the Detroit Salvage now.

Have a special squad standby.

Tell them we're on our way with a warrant.

DE-1 to all units on this special. Move in, now.

[dramatic music]

Attention, everyone in the area.

'This is the FBI.'

'We have a warrant to search the premises.'

Remain where you are and prepare to identify yourselves.

[music continues]

Mr. Rogers, we'll take those.

This warrant gives us the right to search the premises

and to take those documents with us.

You have the right to remain silent.

Any statement you make can be used against you.

You can call your attorney if you wish.

[dramatic music]

But the serial numbers on the gambling devices

match those that were transported

from Nevada two days ago.

I'm afraid you're mistaken.

The trucks that transported them

are registered to "Royal Leasing".

A company that you own.

I've never heard of it.

Have you ever heard of Martin Rawll?

Martin Rawll?

He's the Cosa Nostra lieutenant you've been doing business with

'for the last year.'

Since 1968, September

your ledgers have shown

a weekly payment of $5,000 to MLR.

Those initials could stand for a lot of things.

Is there anything else?

Yes.

I'm sure you realize that if La Cosa Nostra

feels threatened, they won't hesitate

to take any steps necessary to protect themselves.

Are you suggesting that I don't apply for release on bail?

'That something might happen to me?'

I'm suggesting that you help us.

So we can put them where they can't do anything to anyone.

Well, I'm afraid I can't.

I've never had any connection with the Cosa Nostra.

Anyway, why would anyone want to hurt me?

Or anybody near me?

You and Philip Garrett were friends, weren't you?

Now you're not going to try to

make charges against me for that, are you?

Can I go now?

Yeah.

Be out on bail in an hour.

Well, a couple of our first team lawyers

shouldn't have any trouble getting him off, Mr. Crist.

Rogers shouldn't have used his own trucks

to transport those machines.

Well, we can break that.

Just hire some witnesses to testify

that they were stolen.

Look, we can beat it.

That's not the point, Marty. He did a stupid thing.

I don't think we have any further interest in Mr. Rogers.

Let the government have him.

But what if he talks?

What about?

'There's nothing to connect him with us, is there?'

No.

You didn't sign any receipts, accept any checks?

No. Of course, not.

You're quite concerned about Mr. Rogers.

'First you try to sponsor him for the membership.'

Now you try to save him after a mistake a kid wouldn't pull.

Well, I just hate to see an investment go down the drain.

Yeah, but I know, you're right.

Of course, I am.

[laughs]

It's just like you, Marty.

'Always worrying about business. You get too worked up.'

It's not your fault. Don't sweat about it.

We can afford a few losses.

Now how about both of us getting some sleep, huh?

Goodnight, Mr. Crist.

[dramatic music]

Now, it's just going to take a little while, that's all.

That's just what I don't have. Time.

They've got a good case.

Well, you've got good lawyers.

The best lawyers in the world can't guarantee an acquittal.

The right people have to be bought off.

Witnesses have to be bribed.

Marty, I need your help.

That's why I paid for the membership.

Now, look, look. Let me get started on it, huh?

You'll hear from me in the morning.

It's going to work out alright.

It better, Marty.

It just better.

If I have to take a fall..

after what I paid you..

Now I told you not to worry.

[intense music]

He's going to blow the whistle to the council

about that money I took for his membership.

Unless you can get him off yourself.

Ah, let's see what we can do to help him.

Now get out the list.

Everybody we ever did a favor for.

But first try and find out who they empanel on the grand jury.

Let's pull out all the stops.

What if we can't swing it?

Well..

Then you'll have to handle him.

Now, look, you owe me.

I wouldn't call unless I had to.

So what's the big deal?

All I want is a few names of the prospective jurors.

That's all.

I know it will cost. I'm willing to pay.

Alright, forget it.

But the next time you want a favor, don't bother to call me.

It's no use. I couldn't reach anybody.

They're too scared.

The word's out that Crist wants Rogers to take the fall.

Well, that's it then.

Finish Rogers.

Well?

The police know I'm close to you.

When Rogers gets it, they're going to start checking on you.

And me. That's not smart.

Yeah, you're right.

I'll have to contract somebody else.

Someone they can't connect.

Art, I was just about to call you.

Do you have any news on Philip Garrett's condition?

Yes, they removed the b*llet

but he's still in traumatic shock.

They have no idea when he'll be able to talk.

Have you forwarded the slug?

'It's on it's way to the lab.'

Do you suppose Rogers knows about Garrett?

I'm not sure. We're going out to see his wife now.

She called and said it was important.

Oh, well, let me know what happens.

[instrumental music]

What are you doing?

Jumping bail.

They deserted. Dumped.

Friends were supposed to deliver but I'm afraid they're going to.

So, I'm going to help myself.

But that's a federal matter.

We'd have to leave the country.

That's right. But it is not 'we'. It is just me.

There's $10,000. It's all the cash we've got.

Except for what I need to cross the border.

Now, there's some more cash and bonds in the safe deposit box.

'I suggest you get them in a hurry.'

Scott, if I don't mean anything to you, what about Pattie?

Doesn't she mean anything either?

[slams briefcase]

Of course, she does.

But do you know what it means to be on the run?

You think I can put you two through that?

Now use your head.

With this, you and Pattie can get a new start.

[doorbell rings]

- Mrs. Rogers? - Yes.

I'm Jameson Presco. Presco and Simmons.

Is your husband in?

Oh, he didn't say anything about..

It's about his court case, Mrs. Rogers.

Come in.

I'll be a moment.

[dramatic music]

I'll go with ya.

Now, look, I've got lots of money.

Lots of it.

I've $50,000 in the safe.

I'll show you.

Don't bother.

You, over here.

Move!

[music continues]

No!

- Pattie! - I'll get her.

- Get out of here. - No!

Pattie.

Sweetheart. Wake up.

- Daddy! - Shh!

Turn the lights off.

- Daddy, what's the matter? - Shh! I'll tell you later.

[music continues]

It looks like Rogers has some out of state visitors.

DE-5 to control.

[woman on radio] 'Go ahead, DE-5.'

This is Inspector Erskine.

Give me a quick check through NCIC

on a blue 70' Torino.

Minnesota plates, 1-V-A-9-7-8.

Pattie, can you get through that window?

Huh? Alright.

What I want you to do is, I want you to walk along the roof

to the tree at the corner of the house.

Can you climb down it?

- Yes. I climb it all the-- - Shh!

Shh! Good. Now, listen.

Don't stop running until you get to Mrs. Gordon's house.

Alright, now, be careful. Be careful.

[music continues]

DE-5, go ahead.

'NCIC report subject of your enquiry identical with vehicle'

'used in armed holdup, Toledo, Ohio, yesterday.'

'Vehicle reported stolen, consider occupant armed'

'and dangerous.'

[music continues]

[Tracy screams]

- FBI. - Drop it!

Against the wall.

Step back.

[music continues]

Are you alright?

[sobbing]

Do you have any papers or receipts signed by Rawl?

No. He was too smart for that.

He took the pay offs in cash.

What about the gunmen that came after me?

Isn't that enough to put Rawl away?

[phone buzzes]

Yes?

It's Mr. Ward.

Yes, Art.

Uh, Lewis, we have determined that the slug removed

from Philip Garrett was from a 7mm Nambu.

Japanese automatic p*stol.

Well, they must be pretty scarce by now.

Well, there weren't very many manufactured..

Does the name Jack Lutcher mean anything to you?

He one of Rawl's men, isn't he?

That's right.

Our files show that he carried a Nambu in the past.

That could be the tie-in right there.

What's the disposition of the files Rogers gave us?

Well, we're still studying them.

As soon as I get a clear picture

I'll call the US attorney.

Well, keep digging.

I've got a feeling we're getting close.

[dramatic music]

Yeah?

Hello, Marty.

I got the message. You wanted me to call?

Yeah, Marty, how about dropping over for a drink?

I got a stock investment deal I'd like to discuss with you.

Well, I'm a little busy right now.

Marty, I think you better come in.

Look, Mr. Crist, what's really on your mind, huh?

I don't know what you're talking about.

Look, I'm sorry, I..

I've been pressing things a little too hard lately.

I-I, I guess I need a rest.

Look, would it be alright i-if we, if we met tomorrow?

No, Marty.

Not tomorrow.

Now.

Marty, you're through.

[dramatic music]

I don't understand.

Why?

You violated the code.

You took a $50,000 bribe

to sponsor Scott Rogers for the membership.

Well, that's not true.

I'm afraid it is.

Oh. Well, you'll need a witness to convince the council.

We have a witness.

Marty, come on in.

Get it over with.

Make it easier on everybody, huh?

[music continues]

Are you sure you won't come with us to the luncheon, inspector?

I promise to see they don't ask you to say a few words.

No, thanks, Doug, but I'll just grab a sandwich.

I have to be back in a few minutes.

Edson's, about three blocks down 12th.

It's the best place around.

Can we give you a lift?

No, that's alright. I'll walk.

[dramatic music]

[music continues]

[music continues]

[music continues]

[music continues]

What do you want, Rawl?

You're Inspector Erskine, aren't you?

I remember you from my brother's trial.

Is that why you're following me?

No.

I wanna a deal with the FBI.

What kind of deal?

Now, listen to me.

I'm under a death sentence from the council.

Now I need you help.

Now in return, I'll give you records and papers

that'll put every family in this district out of business.

You wanna volunteer information come on back to the office.

Look, it's not that easy.

Now, I want three things.

Immunity from prosecution, a cash payment

and protection until I can get out of the country.

Rawl..

I've no authority to promise you anything.

Then let's not waste our time.

Don't sound as though you have any too much to waste.

[tires screeching]

[dramatic music]

Okay, you win.

I'll go with you.

Get in the car. You, too.

I'm an FBI agent. This man in my custody.

Get in the car.

Don't try to stop us.

Don't look back.

Just keep going.

Too fast.

[music continues]

This isn't gonna work.

They're gonna g*n the both of us in another second.

Keep going.

I gotta make a run for us.

Control yourself.

I can't!

[intense music]

Get out of there!

Lutch...please.

Drop it!

[music continues]

'Hold it!'

[g*nshots]

[music continues]

[instrumental music]

That's all I know about the operation here.

Alright, that does it for now.

Won't you sit down?

Would you read this, please and sign it?

I know my rights, inspector.

Before you go on, inspector..

...I know it's not much, coming from somebody like me..

...but I wanna say it anyway.

Thank you.

For saving my wife's life and mine.

[Marvin Miller] Scott Rogers was convicted of inter state transportation

of gambling devices and was sentenced to a federal prison.

Martin Rawl and Jack Lutcher were tried in state court

and convicted of the attempted m*rder of Philip Garrett.

Through testimony and records supplied by Martin Rawl

Nolan Crist was indicted by a federal grand jury

for conspiracy and on inter-state gambling charges.

[theme music]
