[dramatic music]

Like this, Tob.

Hey, you gotta keep your eye on the ball and swing level.

- Toby, you go wait in the car. - Who's that man, daddy?

Go on now.

Held you to a single.

I told you I'd see you Monday, Ginger.

Collection day is today.

Well, see, I need more time.

Let's do a little reviewing, huh?

Now two weeks ago, you borrowed $20,000.

Said you'd pay it back in a few days.

Well, I had to keep construction going on the new restaurant.

And I thought the bank would come through.

But they didn't. They turned you down.

Now where does that leave me?

Alright, if you can only wait until..

You know what you owe with the interest?

Well, at 4%, I figure--

Five percent, baby.

Five percent a week.

- Oh, you said-- - It ain't my money anymore.

I've merged..

...into the big leagues.

Twenty thousand dollars at five percent a week.

That makes your present balance $22,000.

You can't do that.

I don't make the rates.

You wanna talk to them?

Man, I haven't got that kind of money.

There is no way.

Oh, there's a way, baby. There's always a way.

To save you and your restaurant chain at the same time.

Sign the company over to you?

Mnh-mnh.

To my employers.

Spell mafia.

Well.

No.

I'll tell you what.

You take the weekend. Think it over.

The answer will still be the same.

No!

[chuckles]

Never could run a bluff on you, could I, Rich?

I'll see you later.

Go work it out.

Sorry.

Tonight's episode, The Deadly Pact.

The brutal beating of Richard Phillips

a prominent businessman

by enforcers of La Cosa Nostra

provided agents of the FBI with a new impetus

in an investigation already being conducted

of extortion of n*gro businessmen.

Mr. Phillips

I'm Inspector Erskine with the FBI.

This is Mr. Colby.

We'd like some information on the men who attacked you.

I already told the police.

I didn't know them.

I never saw them before.

Mr. Phillips, we have reason to believe

they were members of La Cosa Nostra

'and they've made an attempt to infiltrate your company.'

Can you describe them to us?

I can't remember.

How did they get to you, Mr. Phillips?

'Who was their contact man?'

We have information that La Cosa Nostra

is using this district as a test

'to see how far they can go on intimidating black businessmen.'

By helping us, you'd be helping yourself

and others like you.

[Richard] 'The-the, the two hoods who jumped me were white.'

That's all I remember about them.

That's the truth.

The contact man is black.

His name's Ginger Dodds.

[Lewis] 'Daniel Dodds also known as Ginger Dodds.'

'He has an arrest record for grand theft'

and as*ault and battery.

And he's been operating as a loan shark

for the past three years.

Yes, sir, the Special Investigative Division

confirms his new ties with Cosa Nostra.

His principle function is still loan sharking.

[knock on door]

- Harry. - Nice to see you.

- Hello, Harry. - Gentlemen.

- Harry. - How are you?

I'm sorry I'm late, Mr. Ward.

There was some heavy traffic out of Dallas Airport.

Hmmm. How is the weather in Minnesota?

Cold.

Well, you're going where it's warmer.

We're sending you on special assignment to Los Angeles.

You're familiar with this man?

Ginger Dodds.

I remember him when I was assigned

to the Baltimore office.

We're preparing a false identity for you, Harry.

We want you to get close to him.

Yes, sir.

Wasn't he arrested for the as*ault

on that restaurant owner?

Richard Phillips in Los Angeles.

He was, but the Los Angeles police had to release him.

Insufficient evidence.

Phillips lapsed back into a coma.

Inspector Erskine is heading a special squad

out of the Los Angeles office.

He'll be your only contact with the bureau.

Yes, sir.

[Arthur] 'Our main purpose is to gather evidence

on the Cosa Nostra extortion of black businessmen.

We want to know who they assigned to this project

and how far this intimidation reaches.

Dodds is the only middleman we've uncovered so far.

We want you in a position to report on his movements

when he starts to put pressure on his next victim.

[fire crackling]

Think you ever gonna learn how to knock out a straight scene?

Hey, that's nice.

Oh, yeah.

[reading indistinctly]

- Hey, Les. - Yeah.

What's this thing from, uh, security?

Budd Liner got caught trying to hustle

a crate of spare parts through the gate.

No, he's through.

He's begging for another chance.

He's had it.

Um, alright.

Well, look, I've been saving the worst for last.

[sighs] Now the bank won't extend the note, huh?

Yeah, they're ready to collar in.

Don't worry, chief. We'll make it.

Look, you wanna talk about a replacement for Liner?

Yeah, who you got?

Henry Jackson over there.

- Henry Jackson. - Yeah.

Yeah, I've heard about you.

Chrome-plated custom-made trouble.

Wait a minute, man.

You were kicked out of school by the time you were 15, right?

- Well, maybe there was a-- - I'm not interested.

By the time you were 16, you were busted for grand larceny.

- My family was hungry-- - I said I'm not interested.

You know, um, in polite terms

you're what we call around here hardcore unemployable.

Now what makes you think I'd be interested in hiring you?

Because I would have tried, but forget it.

Alright, put him on. Tomorrow, early shift.

Jackson, you got one chance.

Don't blow it.

Big with the words, huh?

Oh, you are tough, aren't you?

You're a bad man with a big record.

Well, let me tell you something.

We got some cats out there that will make

your rap sheet look like a prayer book.

And every single one of them came crawling in here

with a sob story just like you.

We got ex-cons, floaters, drunks.

But the man gave them a chance.

And we got a rule around here.

Don't disappoint the man.

It's easy for you and him to preach

being raised with everything.

Well, I got news for you.

The man was raised with the rats just like a lot of us.

And as for me, I got a worst record than all of them.

You dig?

Yeah.

Get out of my chair.

Who let you in here, anyway?

Oh, just coasted in.

Well, you just coast right on out again.

Whatever you're selling, I'm not buying.

Well, now that's not too smart.

See, the word's out you're hurting for money.

Extended yourself too far.

Liable to lose this whole sweet setup.

Where did you hear that?

What's the difference where I heard?

The point is you need $100,000 right now.

I suppose you just happen to have it.

Enough to show you I can get the rest.

Now where would a cheap grifter like you get this kind of bread?

The point is, it's real.

You try that on any bank.

See, now you don't have to worry about

gettin' that government contract.

I don't rap with thieves.

You've been calling me that ever since we were kids.

Hardworking Terry.

Too good to cut a angle.

Always walked the straight line.

Maybe that'll change.

- See you. - Don't hold your breath.

Just crawl on out of here.

Oh, you'll be seeing me, brother

and you will be doing the crawlin'.

LA 55 to Control.

[female #1 on radio] 'Go ahead, 55.'

Dodds has just left Maynard Industrial.

He's headed north toward Whitner Boulevard.

Inspector, I made contact with Dodds at the bail bond agency.

That's his second home.

He latched on to me after I made bail

on that theft charge we rigged up.

Did you mention your background as an accountant?

Yes. He seemed very interested.

He gave me a telephone number and told me to keep in touch.

Any other developments, inspector?

Well, the Special Investigative Division has identified

the lieutenant La Cosa Nostra has assigned to this operation.

- Hmm. - Alex Poland.

He's been detached from one of the New York families.

He's posing as an investment broker.

Dodds is working directly under him.

Has Dodds made any further contact

with Maynard Industrial?

Not that we can determine.

From what we know of Maynard

he's not likely to be intimidated

by physical threat.

So they're probably working on another way to get to him.

Oh, yeah.

[laughs]

- Hello, Ginger. - Mr. Poland.

- Would you like a drink? - No, thanks.

- Come on, sit down. - Thank you.

[sighs]

Maynard won't budge.

When does he bid on that government contract?

In two days, I think.

Well, he won't get it.

The general information around

is that he's far higher than the other bidders.

Don't put any more pressure on him.

After he gets the results, he'll come to you.

I mean, he'll have to. His credit is dead.

It's funny in a way.

Terry Maynard and I grew up together.

I know that.

What happens after we take control of his company?

We bleed him to death.

We should have knocked off another cent.

"Maynard Industrial, 1.68."

And finally

"Colton Industries, 1.64."

'That completes the bidding.'

'Pending the review'

'the contract is hereby awarded to Colton Industries.'

We worked so hard, Les.

It can't all be over.

- Hi. - You didn't come home.

So we decided to come to you.

You heard about the bid?

Hey, how's my girls, huh?

[chuckles] Stacey.

Hi, baby.

Did you have a good time at the zoo?

- Yeah. - Hmm, okay.

Hey, I'll tell you what.

Why don't you girls go out to Miss King's desk

and get yourselves some paper and pencils and draw me

those animals that you saw at the zoo, hmm?

Okay? Right in the left-hand drawer.

That's it.

Well, it's all over now, Ciss.

It's never over.

Not as long as we have each other.

[chuckles] I'm not talking about us.

I'm talking about those other people.

All the people I hired and promised a chance.

They'll understand.

They know it wasn't your fault.

Terry, you're worn out from helping other people.

Why don't you try living for yourself for a while?

Maybe I should.

Oh, come on. It's gonna be alright, don't worry.

Look, uh, give me a couple of more hours here.

I got a lot of things to clean up.

- Two hours. No more. - Alright.

- Promise? - It's a promise. See you.

Uh, Ginger Dodds, please?

Yeah. Terry Maynard calling.

Oh, he's not.

Um, yeah, would you have him call me, please?

Thank you.

[phone buzzes]

Yes?

It's Mr. Ward.

Yes, Arth.

Lewis, we've just received information

on further Cosa Nostra infiltration

in the black communities in Detroit, Baltimore.

They're trying to line up middlemen like Ginger Dodds

but so far, they're not having much luck.

Well, then it definitely looks as though

they're using this area as a test.

Yes, the test we've got to sway in our favor.

Is Maynard still resisting them?

Well, he lost his contract bid yesterday.

But we've had no indications so far

that he's been in further touch without either Dodds or Poland.

Hold on a minute, Arth.

Arth, we just got word from Harry Dane.

Maynard contacted Dodds last night.

- I thought you'd be alone. - Why?

So nobody witness your disgrace?

Well, here it is.

All you got to do is ask for it.

I'm askin'.

Crawl, baby.

- Why, you-- - Hey.

You hit me, you're still gonna have to crawl.

[laughter]

Right, so I can expect delivery on Friday.

No.

No, I can't wait the weekend.

I need that material.

Right.

Right, okay. Bye.

It's alright, honey. The man knows me.

- What do you want? - Collection day, Terry.

Oh, what are you talking about? The first payment's not due--

It's due today. The whole bundle.

One week's interest makes it $105,000.

What?

Five percent interest per week.

Special handling charge.

What are you trying to pull?

Hey, this won't help you, baby.

It's bigger than both of us.

See, I got partners now.

You want me to spell out who they are?

And they're just a phone call away.

You might not be able to make that phone call.

Use your head, Terry. You're hooked.

Look, man, you know I can't get a hold of that kind of loot.

What do they want?

'Oh, nothing that'll upset you too much.'

They just want you to hire a few people.

- I got a full staff. - So drop a few.

- I can't do that. - Sure you can.

I'll even tell you which ones.

You start with your vice president

in charge of purchasing.

What's his name? Um, Les Cutts.

And you follow that with your head of accounting.

Then your receiving supervisor, clear?

Yeah, it's clear. It's very clear.

Let me see what the police have to say about that.

By the way, Terry, how's your family?

Honey, you heard anything from the kids yet?

No, no, I'm gonna call the FBI.

- No, no, we can't do that. - Why?

Why, Terry, tell me why?

Lewis, Unit 6 reports seeing two little girls

in a car with a man driving west on Century Boulevard.

The girls match the description Mrs. Maynard gave us

of her children and, uh, they said the man driving the car

bears a strong resemblance to Felix Darren.

He's a bureau fugitive.

Darren, he's one of Alex Poland's soldiers.

'Hm, he's wanted by the New York office'

for unlawful flight m*rder.

They made no attempt to apprehend him

because of the children.

Yeah.

Alright, Bryan, assign three more units

to help Unit 6 with the surveillance.

Alright.

How long have you known my daddy?

Long time.

That's why he told me to pick you up at school.

Where did you say he and mommy went?

Oh, just to see some friends.

They'll be back in a little while and I'll take you home.

[male #1 on radio] 'LA 9 to LA 32.'

Go ahead, 9.

[male #1] 'Subject is turning left on to Manchester Boulevard'

'in the 2400 Block.'

Okay, now you kids wait right here.

I'm gotta make a phone call, okay?

[male #1] 'Subject is parked near 3600 East Century.'

'Subject is now entering a telephone booth'

'across the street.'

'The children are in the car alone.'

Hold on, 6.

LA 9 and 7

block intersections at Hammer and 5th.

Unit 6, stand by to join us in arrest.

Yeah, well, what's the situation?

Maynard's agreed to our conditions.

Wh-what do I do with the kids?

[g*nshots]

Look, I really appreciate you guys finding my kids

but I can't help you otherwise.

Mr. Maynard, your testimony against Dodds

is vitally important.

And suppose they come after my kids again?

Or maybe my wife?

I'm afraid we have to ask for your help, Mr. Maynard.

We know how you feel

but there are a lot of other people involved.

[chuckles] At a time like this

I'm supposed to care about other people?

[Lewis] 'We know of your practice of hiring unemployables.'

People nobody else wants, giving them a chance.

We don't want the efforts of all those people to be in vain.

Look.

[sighs] You guys have been straight with me.

Let me be straight with you.

I really wish that I could help you.

But I can't. I just can't.

- Is it alright if I go now? - Of course.

Tom, show Mr. Maynard out.

Well, here's to another one you put in the bag, Ginger.

Grabbing those kids didn't go so well.

It's alright. Manny got the message.

It's all that counts.

Yeah, but if he talked to the FBI--

You'd be in a cell now.

Come on, relax.

So now the next step is to move our men into Maynard's company.

Who are you gonna use?

You.

- Now look, Mr. Poland-- - Alex.

Alex, I'd like to pass on this one.

They got some real bad people over there in that company.

If they found out what I was up to

that I was out to destroy their jobs--

- They'd probably k*ll you. - Uh-huh.

But I'm afraid we're just gonna have to take that chance.

You see, I can't move my men into an all-black company.

That would be too obvious.

I'm afraid that this part of the operation

is out my line, Mr. Poland.

Don't think too bad of me, but..

...maybe we ought to break off this partnership.

Maybe I better explain something to you about our organization.

We don't dissolve partnerships.

- Well, what have I done wrong? - Nothin'.

Have I hurt you, Terry?

- Have I hurt the company? - No.

Well, then how can you sit there and tell me that I'm through

without any reason, without giving me some--

Come on. Stop it.

It won't help anyway.

In order to get out of the mess we were in

I had to make a deal with, with an eastern company.

And they want some of their own people in.

It's as simple as that.

Don't you mean it's as cutthroating as that, Terry?

And who else are you letting go?

I don't know. Few people in accounting.

Charlie in receiving.

And in the next day, it'll be the rest of the top floor

and the day after that, it'll be the entire assembly line.

Terry, can't you see what you're doing, man?

You can't sell out!

Terry. Terry, look.

A long time ago, you told me

that this company didn't exist just to make money.

You said it was a living thing. You said it was people.

You said it was us working together--

Les, Les, will you cut it out? Stop it!

Please, j-just go, get out.

Two years ago, you brought me into this company

and you told me that I had a chance.

'You said nothing in my past mattered'

as long as I delivered.

It sounded good, Terry, and I believed you.

I believed you, baby, and I fought for you.

I fought for you every inch of the way.

And now it turns out that you're just another phony.

'You know?'

Well, that just wipes out all the bargains between us, Terry.

And I'm gonna tell you something.

You look out for yourself.

Look out for yourself, Terry.

Look out.

Thought you'd like to have a look at your new employees.

- Anybody else? - Mnh-mnh.

They'll do the job fine.

Oh, one thing, Terry.

They won't need much supervising.

So you just rattle your papers

and we'll take care of everything else.

You got that inventory list I asked you for?

Yeah.

Now I wanna get my team oriented

so why don't you go out and check the plant?

I see. Now for starters

we seem to be a little low on electrical wire.

Why don't you put through a requisition

for a few hundred thousand feet?

[chuckles]

[Lewis] 'Their plan is simple but deadly.'

Dodds has issued requisitions for heavy purchases

such as electrical equipment.

In this case, uh, it was mailed to Simpson Wire Company

Post Office Box 6432, Las Vegas.

A non-existing company.

La Cosa Nostra operatives at that end

simply mail back an invoice to Maynard Industrial.

Dodds' man in the receiving department

'marks it as material received'

'and it's forwarded to the accounting department'

where a check is issued for payment.

And they've begun immediate heavy purchases?

Yeah, according to Harry Dane, they'll have Maynard Industrial

bled dry in a month.

It looks as though our best plan of attack

is through the canceled checks.

Celebrating a little?

I've been sitting here taking a good look at myself.

- I don't like what I see. - Well, you're alive, ain't you?

- That's the important thing. - Is it?

I'm beginning to wonder.

You're not thinking stupid, are you, Terry?

- Like what? - Like cops.

It's kind of late for that.

Now you hold that thought.

That's healthy.

'Ginger.'

Uh, there's one more little thought

keeps buzzin' around in my head.

You remember when we were kids, there never was a time

when I couldn't beat you doing anything.

Just don't make sense I should give up now, does it?

I told you to look out for yourself.

[g*n clicks]

Here, come on, man.

Cut it. Have a drink.

What are you waiting for? Why don't you call the cops?

Nah.

It's about time somebody did something.

[Terry] 'The messenger service.'

'Yeah, I got something I want delivered.'

'Maynard Industrial Corporation.'

[Tom] 'They got here just a few moments ago.'

"Thought these might be of use to you."

It's from Maynard.

Bryan, get these off to the Document section right away.

Did he say he was going to the police?

- Not exactly. - What exactly?

Just his tone. I think he's had enough.

He's gonna fight back.

What do you think we should do, Ginger?

Well, shake him up a little more.

No. I think you're right.

I think he can't be pushed any further.

'I think he's served his purpose.'

What are you gonna do?

I'll see you later, Ginger.

You're gonna k*ll him?

We're businessmen. We don't k*ll people.

I'll see you later, Ginger.

- Kids ready yet? - In a minute.

Good. We gotta stop by the plant. I got some money for you.

Terry, why don't you call Inspector Erskine?

Honey, I intend to, but I want you and the kids

far away and safe when I do.

There's no telling what's gonna break loose.

Now you go get the kids. I'll put the luggage in the car.

[Lewis] '"Laboratory reports questioned writing on canceled checks'

'"cashed in Nevada banks.'

"Identical handwriting, Daniel Dodds.

"Identification Division advices latent fingerprints

"of Dodds and Alex Poland

"also developed on checks.

"Present facts US attorney

"for authority to apprehend both subjects.

Expedite."

Get me the US attorney.

[banging on door]

Who is it?

Alright, let's try it again. Who are you fronting for?

I don't know what you're talking about.

Come off of it. He knows you.

And not by the name you're hired out in the company.

He knows you as Ginger Dodds. You're a juicer.

A two-bit loan shark.

[grunts]

[scuffling]

[Tom] Hold it! FBI.

Hands behind your head. Over there.

Let's get against the wall. Come on. Hands up.

No, I'm sorry.

I'm afraid I've never heard of anyone named Maynard.

How about Ginger Dodds?

Dodds?

No.

Alright, that's all for now.

The neighbors saw Maynard and his family

leave the house and drive away about an hour ago.

They don't know where and we have nothing further.

We gotta find them.

This ought to be enough to get you settled

till I straighten things out.

[telephone rings]

Hello.

Hello?

[telephone rings]

Hello?

Mr. Maynard, this is Inspector Erskine.

Oh, inspector.

Look, did you try to call me a few seconds ago?

[Lewis] 'No.'

Well, somebody did. He didn't say anything.

- Is your family with you? - Yeah.

'Alright, Mr. Maynard. Listen carefully.'

'If you have security guards on duty, alert them.'

Turn off the lights and don't come out

of your office until we arrive.

Right.

Terry, what is it?

I'm afraid we're gonna have some company.

[phone rings]

Security's not answerin'.

There's no point puttin' you in danger.

- It's me they want. - 'Terry.'

Honey, they only way in here is through that door

and I can cover it best from the assembly floor.

You get over there and sit down.

Terry, don't leave us.

Honey, I got to.

My only chance is to draw 'em off.

It's our only chance. Now you do what I say, okay?

Hey, baby.

Now you girls, daddy's gonna turn out the light.

'But I don't want you to be afraid, hear?'

You gotta be quiet though? Very quiet.

I, I'll be right outside.

Very quiet.

[g*nshots]

[g*nsh*t]

Mrs. Maynard?

It's alright. We're with the FBI.

[g*nsh*t]

[groans]

[Lewis] 'FBI. Hold it right there.'

[g*nshots]

Call an ambulance.

Hey, my wife, the kids.

They're safe.

[groans]

Well, we just dropped by to see how you're feeling.

- Just fine, thanks to you. - Good.

Uh, Mr. Maynard, we don't wanna interrupt any--

Oh, no, you're not interruptin'.

Come on in. We want you to join us, anyway.

Yeah, we're having a little celebration here.

A welcome home.

Richard Phillips recovered

and was able to testify against Daniel "Ginger" Dodds.

Dodds, Alex Poland and their confederates

were convicted of extortionate credit transactions

and interstate transportation in aid of racketeering.

Felix Darren was returned to the state of New York

to stand trial for m*rder.

[theme music]
