[instrumental music]
[knock at door]
Who's that?
[Nora] 'It's me, darling. Nora.'
Wow! What a beautiful surprise.
Oh, Wesley, you're, uh... you were packing.
Just switching hotel.
There's a convention coming in town
and they needed the room.
Switching hotels? That's very funny.
You, uh, you didn't say anything about it.
I've been trying to call you all morning. Just came home.
I'm very glad you're changing hotels, Wesley.
The service in this one is terrible.
The switchboard, for example told me
that you were out all morning.
You see I was calling you.
You were?
Yes, I, uh...I located a few more pieces of jewelry
and I, uh, I took them to the appraiser.
Your appraiser, darling. The one you recommended so highly.
Did you see him?
Yes, I did.
It's very odd though, he, uh, he claims he never heard of you.
Well, he probably wasn't sure of you, darling.
What's more, he never heard of me or of my jewelry.
The jewelry you're supposed to have taken to him.
Well, he was obviously, uh, confused.
Hmm, I'd better call him.
While you're at it, Lt. Garrett
why don't you call the Navy too?
And when you do, they'll tell you
there is no Lt. Wesley Garrett on their roster.
Nora, what's gotten into you?
I didn't believe what the appraiser told me.
But I had to be sure, so I...so I called the Navy.
You're a fraud, lieutenant.
You're a phoney, and a fake.
Hey, Nora, baby.
I've been working on a very special intelligence assignment.
I wouldn't be able to talk to you about it
even after I got married.
I've even been trained not to talk in my sleep.
Where's my jewelry?
Stay away from that bag.
- Oh.. - Leave that. Give me..
Nora, why do you have to cause trouble?
That's all of this adds up to, isn't it?
That's all you ever wanted.
I'll go and get the police.
[dramatic music]
[theme music]
[Marvin Miller] "The FBI."
A Quinn Martin production.
Starring Efrem Zimbalist Jr.
Also starring, Philip Abbott..
William Reynolds.
With guest stars Stuart Whitman..
Phyllis Kirk..
Marj Dusay.
And special guest star, Mariette Hartley.
Tonight's episode, "The Impersonator."
Alerted by Nora Tobin, the Baltimore Police
found pieces of her stolen jewelry
in the suspect's hotel room.
A bracelet and a ring, valued at $36,000 were missing.
Further investigation revealed that the suspect
calling himself Lt. Wesley Garrett
had been masquerading as an officer
in the United States Navy.
And the FBI entered the investigation.
Ziegler never went back to his hotel room.
And he left everything.
Including his uniform, personal papers
and his fingerprints.
The Identification Division matched the latents
found in his room with his fingerprint record.
Wesley W. Ziegler.
Also known as Walter Garrett..
William West, Chester Willoughby.
When was this taken?
Five years ago.
He's served time in Atlanta for passing bad checks.
And he's wanted on various bunco charges
"in Philadelphia, New York, Charlotte, North Carolina
and suspicion of m*rder in Virginia."
- m*rder? - Apparently he's capable of it.
According to his victims, he gets pretty violent
when he's trapped.
I think this is relevant.
In each case, the complaint was filed by a woman.
Well-off, unmarried.
Nora Tobin's a good example.
Yeah, this man is a parasite.
He feeds on their loneliness.
The emotional damage he's caused
can never be written off in these reports.
What did he steal from the Tobin woman?
"An emerald bracelet, and a small diamond ring."
Persuasive parasite.
Well, he convinced her that the jewelry was damaged. Flawed.
So that he'd take it to an appraiser
and the poor woman believed everything he told her
including his proposal of marriage.
You know, if he left everything in the hotel room
he'll have to do something about raising money.
We've sent our flyers to all the jewelry dealers
and appraisers and pawn shops
in case he tries to sell the bracelet and the ring.
Now, we better keep an eye
on the National Fraudulent Check File too.
Just in case he reverts to his old habits.
Well, sooner or later, he'll revert
to his favorite habit, bilking lonely women.
I want him apprehended, Lewis, before it happens again.
[dramatic music]
I'll run over to Baltimore to interview Ms. Tobin.
And work fast.
His next victim might not be as lucky as she was.
[dramatic music]
Good, good.
I want you to try it again.
[knock on glass]
Hi!
Hey, I told you I'd look you up if I ever got down this way.
What are you doing here in Georgia?
I was just passing through, on my way to Palm Beach.
Look, I'll keep on going if you--
No, no, no, no, no. Now, wait a minute.
Don't rush off like that.
I'm just surprised to see you. That's all.
I'm not looking for any hand out.
I just figured we shared the same cell for so long
that I'd look you up if I ever came down this way.
You're not in trouble, are you? Are you running?
If I made a k*lling, I wouldn't be here.
Things been rough for you, huh?
Well, it's a lot tougher staying out of trouble than I thought.
- Yeah. - Mm-hmm.
I figured you'd be back chasing the rich women
uh, the minute you got out.
[chuckling]
Well, I can't say I wasn't tempted.
Well, I see you did it, huh, Kehoe?
You got what you always wanted.
[chuckling]
Yes, and I've never been happier.
No more of those gray walls.
Nothing but the blue sky
and the blue water
and the cry of the birds.
Yeah?
It's a sweet life. That's what you've got.
Uh-huh.
Okay, Wesley, listen.
You come inside, get yourself a shave.
I'll get you something to eat, give you a few bucks
and you'll be on your way again, okay?
You always had a big heart, Sam.
No. Just grew a hard nose.
A man has to do that sometimes to protect what he owns.
[dramatic music]
It's exactly what you'd expect.
It was a lot of walks in the moonlight.
It was many picnics on the beach.
It was endless dinners by candlelight
and it was an incredible number of beautiful lies.
[sighs]
You know... looking back on it now
I think I always knew they were lies.
Alright. I suspected it, really.
You see, I-I-I just..
I couldn't make myself admit it.
I mean.. Well, he could be very very charming.
How did you meet him?
Well, I, uh, moved to Baltimore just a few months ago.
I didn't know a soul, so I joined the tennis club.
And, uh, I took tennis lessons
because that was a marvelous way
of meeting a lot of new people.
And one day, this beautiful man in a dashing Navy uniform
came and offered to help me with my forehand and..
Well, one thing lead to another.
Yes, of course.
Is, um...tennis his big interest?
Actually, he's a marvelous athlete.
He's very good at tennis and swimming
and golf and, uh, sailing.
Sailing is his main interest.
Did he have a boat of his own?
Well, uh...he always rented the boats that we used
but he said that he owned his own boat back home.
And where did he say that was?
He said that that was a Norfolk, Virginia.
He also said that he had won many races there.
The, uh, Norfolk, Regatta
and...lot of other things.
And, uh.. What about friends and relatives?
Anyone he could go to for help?
Uh, no. N-not any that I know of.
God..
I feel like such a fool.
I'm so ashamed of myself.
Oh, I shouldn't be if I were you.
You are not the first woman to be taken in by him.
Matter of fact, the Norfolk Police
want him on suspicion of m*rder.
m*rder?
[exhales]
Well, I guess I ought to count my blessings, oughtn't I?
Expect I'm not feeling very charitable at the moment.
That man used me, inspector.
He used me in the worst possible way
and I'm not going to draw a happy breath
until he's caught.
You are going to catch him, aren't you, inspector?
Yes, Ms. Tobin, we are.
[dramatic music]
[Wesley] 'Well, the ring isn't worth much'
'but I should think that the diamond's worth quite a bit.'
Indeed, yes.
They're excellent stones.
[Wesley] 'Hmm. I'd like a new setting on it.'
Something simple and elegant for my wife.
- Do you know what I mean? - Of course.
Would you like our designer
to prepare some sketches for you?
I would. But how long would that take?
Oh, three, four days.
If you like, we can call you when they're ready.
Huh. That'll be just fine.
That name is Chester. Arthur Chester.
Alright, Mr. Chester, I'll give you a receipt for the ring.
Oh, is that the correct time?
Yes, I believe so.
Hmm. The banks are closed, aren't they?
Hmm.
Wonder if you'd do me a favor.
Of course, Mr. Chester.
Could you cash a check for me?
Well, uh, it isn't really our policy.
No, I suppose not.
And it is a really large sum, $1500.
But, um, you could look into my credit.
And you could use that ring as a collateral.
It should be worth about $5,000 to $6,000.
Well, um..
Well, just a moment. I-I'll speak to the manager.
Mr. Pearson..
[instrumental music]
I am sorry for the delay, Mr. Chester.
We'll be happy to cash your check.
Oh, thank you.
- Uh, may I borrow your pen? - 'Certainly.'
[instrumental music]
[dramatic music]
According to the police
it happened right here, in Downtown Norfolk
about three years ago.
He was using the name Chester Willoughby.
Is that the copy of the police report?
- Yes, sir. - Thank you.
The woman called the police accusing Willoughby or Ziegler
of conning her out of $13,000.
When they went to question her
they found her dead.
The windows shut and the gas on.
Apparently, they weren't convinced it was suicide.
Well, there was a bad bruise on her head.
Might have happened when she collapsed and hit the floor.
Or it might have been the result of foul play.
Well, Ziegler did have a boat.
Twenty foot sail.
But his license on it expired two years ago.
Who owns it now?
The Square Rigger Yacht Club.
But they haven't seen Ziegler in years.
He just left it in a slip and disappeared.
Well, since he has two major interests
sailing and rich women, though not necessarily in that order
chances are he'll go where he can find both.
We better start checking on the yacht clubs.
I want flyers sent to all of them
up and down the coast. And get right on it, Tom.
He may have picked out his next prospect by now.
[instrumental music]
Waiter..
Can you tell me if a Mr. Coldwell is around?
White hair gentleman, over there.
Thank you.
- Excuse me, Mr. Coldwell. - Hmm?
I'm Bill West, Vice Commodore.
Lake Washington YC, in Seattle.
Well..
Nice to have you aboard, Mr. West.
- Oh, thank you, sir. - Sit down. Cool down.
Well, you're a long way from home, young man.
You here on a vacation?
Well, yes and no, sir.
I'm thinking about opening up a branch office
here in Palm Beach.
I wanted to check out the yachting facilities
before making a decision.
[chuckles]
Pleasure before business, eh?
Not many of us can afford that luxury.
What business are you in?
A brokerage firm.
Stocks and bonds.
Eh, you must be very talented.
Do you make investments, sir?
- I've taken a bath or two. - Daddy.
- Jessica. - Hi.
Mr. West, my daughter, Jessica Bowling.
How do you do?
Very nice meeting you, Mrs. Bowling.
Thank you. Please, sit down.
[Coldwell] 'Jessica, Mr. West has come all the way from Seattle'
'just to look over our facilities.'
- Oh, do you approve, Mr. West? - Very much so.
The name is Bill.
Well, the sunshine here in Florida is quite different
than the fog in Seattle.
I should imagine that you and your husband
are out on the water constantly.
My husband died a year ago.
I'm terribly sorry.
Well, Jessica, why don't you show Mr. West around the club?
Perhaps you can talk him into
staying in Palm Beach permanently.
I'd like that very much.
Well, I'm not much of a tour guide, but I'll try.
Excuse me, father.
Very nice meeting you, Mr. Coldwell.
Thank you. Thank you.
How long are you staying, Mr. West?
Well, that depends.
I'm thinking about opening up a brokerage firm here.
Oh, stocks and bonds.
Heh. That's something I'll never understand.
[Bill laughs]
Well, who does?
My husband did very well at it.
But I'm sure I've made a mess of our portfolio.
I know I shouldn't ask
but what do you think of amalgamated metal?
I just bought a 1,000 shares.
Madam, I'd say that you were exploiting me.
[chuckles] Forgive me.
I know, I'm a shameless woman.
Shameless enough to have a drink with me?
You know something..
... I think I am.
Lead the way in.
[instrumental music]
[intercom buzzing]
Yes?
It's assistant director Ward, inspector.
Morning, Arthur.
Well, you were right, Lewis.
Our friend, Ziegler, has reverted to his old habits.
Bad checks?
[Arthur] 'Just one so far for $1500 using the alias Arthur Chester.'
He cashed it at a jewelry shop in Sea Island, Georgia
using Nora Tobin's ring as collateral.
Any word on the bracelet?
Nothing yet.
He was clever. The way he cashed in on that ring.
He's obviously avoiding pawn shops.
Yeah, and he's far from Sea Island now of course.
Does he have any friends there we know of?
Just one, a man named Sam Kehoe.
Runs a scuba-diving school at the Marina.
He and Ziegler were cellmates in Atlanta.
I better have a talk with him.
That's a good idea, Lewis.
[instrumental music]
You know something, Bill, you're a marvelous sailor.
A skipper's only as good as his crew.
You've been sailing long?
All my life, I was raised on the water.
When I get to know you a little bit better
I'll even show you my webbed feet.
[laughs]
I knew there was something distinctive about you.
[Bill] 'Well, not distinctive enough to stay out of the Navy though.'
- Oh, you were overseas? - Two years.
In and around Vietnam.
The fact is, I'm still in the reserves.
Word is that my unit might become reactivated.
Oh..
Would that change your plans?
I mean, you know, about staying here in Palm Beach?
Would it make a difference to you?
Well..
We always need good sailors.
- Especially ones with webbed.. - Jessie.
...feet.
- Bill, don't. - I'm sorry.
I didn't mean to do that.
Bill.
I know exactly what you're going through.
I went through the same nightmares when my wife died.
- Your wife? - Yes, I was married.
When Carol died..
I knew I'd never look at another woman again.
The thought alone would make me feel guilty.
Oh, I know.
I know that feeling.
I'm past all that, Bill.
We're never passed all that.
Be honest with yourself, Jessie.
When you think you have those memories tucked
nicely, neatly away, while you run across
an old letter at the bottom of a drawer
somebody walks by using the same perfume.
No, we're not meant to..
...forget old memories.
Bill..
I don't think your wife
or my husband
would want us to stop living just because they're gone.
Jessie, if I believe you really felt like that..
[Jessica] Of course, I do but..
But we both know how quickly life can be snatched away.
Bill..
Well, I got to hand it to the guy.
He could sell a snorkel to a halibut.
What'd he sell you?
[Sam] He sold me on how broke he was.
'Well, he didn't complain or say anything'
but somehow I wound up giving him a bed
a couple of meals and a..
[chuckles]
...was a $50 loan.
That's how he operates.
And that isn't all.
He walked out of here with my brand new blazer
and an $18 pair of deck shoes.
How long did he stay with you?
Just overnight.
You know something, I, uh, I actually think he resents you.
If you're nice to him.
You do him a favor and wham!
He steals you blind.
And you didn't know he was wanted?
Well, no. But I should've suspected it.
Last time I saw him was when he walked out of prison.
Now, would you believe it
even then he had a girl waiting for him.
- Any idea who she was? - I don't know.
Uh, Harriet. Henrietta..
Something like that. I don't know.
Did he give any idea of his plans when he was here?
Ziegler has only one plan.
Find a wealthy woman and take her for every dime she's got
in my blazer and my deck shoes.
Where would he look?
'In any high rent district. Uh, resort town probably.'
Miami, Palm Beach, Biloxi.
Hey, Palm Beach.
He said, he was just passing through
on his way to Palm Beach.
Thanks very much.
Listen, you plan on doing any sh**ting
make sure he isn't wearing my blue blazer.
[Jessica] 'It really frightens me, father.'
'I think it's getting serious.'
[Coldwell] 'Oh, you don't look too frightened.'
But, aren't you rushing things a bit?
You two have only known each other a short time.
What do you think of him, father?
Well, those stocks he told you to buy.
- How're they doing? - Up two and half points.
Excellent sailor too.
I think I love him, father. I really do.
Well, for what it's worth, young lady
'I've never seen you quite this happy.'
- Hello, darling. - Hi.
I'm sorry I'm late.
- I've got some bad news. - What's wrong?
I just got a wire from the Navy department.
They're recalling me for active duty.
Oh, no.
Well, that is bad news.
But can't you get out of it?
I've been on the phone the past hour. No luck.
I have to report in two weeks.
Excuse me.
- Jessica, wait. - I'm sorry, Bill, I..
I want you to marry me now. Right now.
I know I sound like an impulsive teenager.
But there's so little time, and I love you so much.
It might be the biggest mistake we'll ever make, but..
Mr. Coldwell, would you please tell your daughter to
quit staring at me and say something.
I don't know what to say.
I can't tell her what to say, Bill
but there's nothing wrong with being an impulsive teenager.
They seem to have the most fun these days.
Look, we can fly to Alabama, be married in ten minutes.
No delays, no red tape
and spend the next two weeks on our honeymoon.
Oh, Bill.
Oh, do you expect me to say no?
Well, I didn't know what you would think..
[both laughing]
Waiter, champagne, please.
You know, I'm almost grateful to the Navy.
Now, wait a second.
We're not gonna talk about the Navy or think about it
for two whole weeks, right? Alright.
Now, tomorrow, I'm gonna call 'em make reservations
for the first plane leaving in the morning.
Wedding in Alabama, honeymoon in Bermuda.
Oh! There's so little time.
I've got so much to do.
I have to do my hair and get to my safe deposit box.
Now, wait a minute. Safe deposit box?
I want you to be proud of me, darling.
'Cause if there was ever a time to the wear the Coldwell jewels
it's on my honeymoon.
Hey, look, I know a little steak place.
- Let's try it tonight, huh? - Good idea.
Good.
Harriet.
Someone you know?
My husband.
Husband, ah..
[laughs]
You are joking, aren't you?
[giggles] Of course.
- Very bad joke. - Yeah.
Look, Fred, is it alright if I meet you in the car in a minute?
Of course.
What're you looking at?
That woman.
Is she staring at us, or is it my imagination?
[Jessica] 'Who is she, Bill? Do you know her?'
She's an old friend of mine.
I should say hello to her.
Look, I'll just be a moment.
Harriet.
Operator, I'd like the police, please.
Unh-unh.
Now you made me lose my dime.
That makes $9000 and ten cents.
Harriet, you've got to listen to me.
Let's see. That's $6000 for the mink coat.
Three thousand dollars in checks I never signed.
Alright. Here you are. Here's a dime. Call the police.
I deserve it.
I'm disappointed.
No sad tales woven over elaborate excuses, Wesley?
Well, you're not gonna believe anything I'd tell you anyway.
- Are you? - Not anymore.
I have something to say to you, and you've got to believe me.
Now, I don't know what you've been doing
with yourself, Harriet, but you look absolutely beautiful.
I know.
You see, when you walked out of our little
rose-covered penthouse
I had a couple of very bad weeks
and I said to myself..
"Get a hold of yourself.
Someone has to care about me."
And I said, it might as well be me.
Hmm.
And it's done wonders for me.
Oh, then you would say that you owe me something, huh?
Oh, and I'm not likely to forget that.
Now, suppose, you trot over there
and let her know that you're still a married man, Wesley.
I would've thought by now you would've had it annulled.
Oh, I just couldn't let you off that easily.
Harriet.
You're not serious.
You still feel enough to forgive me now, don't you?
Well, it's either that, or let the law put you away.
And I think that would be a terrible waste.
Look, I'm staying at the Neptune Garden Hotel--
I got lonely.
Well.. Jessica.
I'd like to introduce you to, um, Mrs. Harriet Ziegler.
- This is Jessica Bowling. - How do you do?
Hello.
Well, I was just telling Harriet how nice it would be
if we could all spend some time together.
You see, we're such old friends
and we have so much to talk about.
Oh, I believe, you said
you were staying at the Neptune Garden Hotel?
That's right. And you're staying at the, ah..
- The Bay Shore Apartments. - Bay Shore Apartments.
- We'll call you tomorrow. - Hm.
- Mrs. Ziegler.. - Yes.
The parking lot attendant just called.
- Your friends are waiting. - Thank you.
Nice to meet you, Ms. Bowling.
Take care, love.
She's very attractive, Bill.
Oh, well..
Well, I think, we ought to, ah..
We ought to got to get a move on, hmm.
You've got a lot of packing to do
and we have big day in store for us tomorrow, don't we?
[instrumental music]
- Good evening, inspector. - Glen.
- We got your teletype. - You know Tom Colby.
Sure, Glen and I worked together on the Callahan case.
- Hi, Tom. - No leads yet?
Not yet.
Flyers were sent out to the local yacht clubs last night.
Well, then, that's where we'll start.
[keys clank]
Going somewhere, Wesley?
Harriet.
- Who let you in here? - Oh, well, it was simple.
I just told the porter that I was your wife.
And for $20, he'd believe anything, even the truth.
Well, I was on my way down to see you, you see.
Well, it's just that, once you finally found me, I..
I just didn't want to risk you losing me again.
- Hmm. - Make me a drink.
Alright.
[Harriet] 'You know, you really don't have to keep on running.'
'I could easily be persuaded to forgive you.'
- I don't deserve that. - You're right. You don't.
Then why bother?
You mean you really don't know.
Money, hmm?
Listen, why don't you give me a day or two
to get it all together for you.
Plus interest.
- From Jessica what's-her-name? - No.
That's just a daughter of a man I have a deal with.
Well, I've already just written it off as a bad debt.
And if you pay me back
it'll just foul up my book keeping system.
Then it isn't the money you want?
If you'd just hung around a little while longer
you'd have realized that all you took from me was chicken feed.
Then what is it you want, revenge?
Tsk, if that's what I wanted
the police would have been here to meet you instead of me.
Alright, Harriet.
You win.
That easily?
Tsk, spoiling all my fun.
Um, well, I'm tired of playing games with you.
You want me as your husband because you love me, right?
Well, here I am.
Now, get your things, move in, tomorrow.
You used to be much more romantic.
Then of course you were lying.
No more lying, Harriet, no more lying.
Then we understand each other.
Uh, maybe too well.
You make one wrong move and I'll hand you
right over to the police.
Your own husband?
[chuckles]
It really would be such a terrible waste.
[instrumental music]
Can I help you, gentlemen?
FBI. We'd like to talk to you.
Certainly.
Uh, does this man look familiar to you?
Yes, it's Mr. West.
Is he a club member?
No, he's a guest. From Seattle I believe.
You know where we can reach him?
He's usually here in the evenings.
Mr. Coldwell, our commodore, would probably know.
And where can we find Mr. Coldwell?
He's judging a race down the course.
Left on the committee boat about an hour ago.
Won't be back till sundown.
Is there anyone else who might know this man?
Well, he was talking to Mrs. Ziegler last night.
Mrs. Ziegler, you say?
'One of our new members.'
Is there a Mr. Ziegler?
No, I think she's a widow. Or divorced.
Hold on, we probably have her address in the office.
Mrs. Ziegler.
It's gotta be more than a coincidence.
[instrumental music]
[telephone ringing]
Hello?
'Good morning, Mrs. West.'
Oh, good morning to you, Mr. West.
I just wanted to let you know that we're going to catch
the 11:45 plane.
Now you've got an hour to change your mind.
[chuckles] Not a chance, you're stuck with me.
Good.
- Are you packed yet? - Almost.
I just got back from the bank, I've got all the jewels.
Fine.
I'll pick you up at 11 o'clock.
I'll be ready.
And, Bill, I really do love you darling.
I love you too, Jess.
- I'll see you soon. - Bye-bye.
[instrumental music]
[doorbell ringing]
[music continues]
Hello, Jessica.
Well, Mrs. Ziegler, how nice of you to come.
- May I come in? - Yes.
I don't want to sound rude, but I'm just getting ready
to go out.
- Something important? - Yes.
Bill and I are getting married.
Oh. Well, my dear, that is important.
I-I won't keep you any longer than it's absolutely necessary.
[instrumental music]
Jessica, wait. Wait a minute.
- Where are you going? - To see Bill.
Look, I told you his name is not Bill West
it's Ziegler, Wesley Ziegler.
I don't believe it. I don't believe a word you've told me.
Listen, look at this ring.
It's a wedding ring he bought me just about a year ago.
You're lying.
Look, he has no intention of marrying you.
He's only after the money.
Anything, jewelry, furs worth stealing.
If he's that kind of a man, why are you still married to him?
Look, I know what he is, and who he is and I'm in love with him.
Oh, of course, you're the only one who qualifies.
But, I'm tougher than you and I know, I know I can handle him.
Don't you, I don't wanna hurt you, Jessi..
[dramatic music]
Well, she's not out here.
No, she's on her way up from the parking lot.
[Erskine] Mrs. Ziegler?
Yes.
Inspector Erskine, FBI.
This is special agent Colby.
Is something wrong?
We'd like to talk to you.
About what?
Wesley W. Ziegler.
This man.
Uh, he's my husband.
Can you tell us where we can find him?
Oh, I-I haven't seen him in over a year.
On the contrary, I believe you were talking with him
last night at the North Bay Yacht Club.
Oh, what do you want with him?
He's charged with impersonating a Naval officer.
And interstate transportation of stolen property.
The state of Virginia wants to talk to him about a m*rder.
A m*rder?
But that's nonsense to me.
Wesley would never m*rder anyone.
You can help us by telling us where he is.
Look, I told you, I-I have no idea where he is.
I hope you're not trying to protect him.
I have no reason to protect him.
I'm glad. Neither have any of his other victims I assure you.
Meaning what?
Meaning you're not the only one.
He's left behind a whole trail of women
who trusted him like you.
They found that trust used as a weapon against him.
One of them was either a suicide or was m*rder*d.
'She felt exactly as you do about him.'
If you want us, we'll be at this number.
Inspector Erskine.
[dramatic music]
[knock at door]
- Oh, Jessie. - Bill.
What are you doin' here?
What's wrong?
I had a visitor a few minutes ago.
Harriet Ziegler.
Oh, well.
That was friendly of her, wasn't it?
[Jessica] 'She said that, that you were married.'
'That you're her husband.'
Oh, no.
[chuckles]
That woman is in worse shape than I thought.
[chuckles]
Uh, Jessie, I should have warned you about her.
You see many years ago before she was married
we used to see each other.
Oh, nothing serious.
Just an occasional date from time to time.
But she wanted to make much more of it than it was.
So I had to level with her.
And I told her
that I didn't think that she could be
anything more to me than just a good friend.
But she never forgave me for that.
I knew she was bitter.
But not to this extreme.
I-is that the truth, Bill, are you telling me the truth?
Yes.
[sighs]
The things she said about you, Bill, they were terrible.
[Wesley] 'Well, she had no right to upset you.'
You see that's the sad part about it.
The way people hurt other people.
Well, come on, darling, we've got to get moving, don't we?
Hm?
Did you bring your things?
No. I-I ran out without them.
Well, we'll have time enough to back to your place
and then to the airport, huh?
Or we can take a later plane, Bill.
What's the matter with you, Jessie?
Come on, you want to sabotage our honeymoon?
We'll never make it.
Why don't I forget about the bags?
I can always pick up something in Bermuda.
What's come over you?
It sounds like insanity.
You mean, just leave your jewels lying around for anyone.
Now, come on.
It's the jewels you want.
Isn't it?
Jessie, what's come over you?
It's true, isn't it?
[dialing]
Operator, give me the police.
Jessie, you give me that phone.
Now, listen, if you love me, really love me
you wouldn't think about the police or Harriet
or anything else that anybody ever told you
about me, would you?
She was right!
Everything she told me was true.
- Jessie. - I'm going to the police.
- Jessie. - You can't stop me.
Jessie, you come back here.
Jessie, you come back here!
[intense music]
Jessie!
[music continues]
Jessie!
'Jessie!'
[tires screeching]
[music continues]
Jessie.
Why did you have to make trouble, huh?
Don't think it's so easy.
FBI, hold it.
[music continues]
[g*nf*re]
Hold it.
[dramatic music]
Grab the wall.
Step back.
Right.
[dramatic music]
[instrumental music]
[car door closes]
What will happen to him now, inspector?
He'll be returned to Virginia first
to face m*rder charges.
Oh, no. m*rder?
You're a very lucky woman, Mrs. Bowling.
He never turned violent until I threatened to call the police.
I wasn't really going to do it, I..
...just wanted desperately for him to make me believe
that what I'd heard wasn't true.
Even when he drew a g*n it was like a bad dream.
Guess I-I suppose I am very lucky.
We'll be happy to see you home if you like.
No, I'll be fine. Thank you, really.
Thank you.
[Marvin Miller] Wesley W. Ziegler was tried and convicted
in state court of m*rder.
He was later found guilty in federal court
of assaulting a federal officer
impersonating a naval lieutenant.
and interstate transportation of stolen property.
[dramatic music]
[theme music]
[music continues]
