[instrumental music]
Good morning.
[music continues]
All the bills, please.
Alright, all of you get right over there!
Come on, right over there. You too.
Come on, hurry up, let's go!
Come on!
Alright, let me have it. Come on.
Alright, now, everybody's gonna stay right there.
About ten minutes, you hear me?
You understand what I say?
[music continues]
[tires screeching]
[birds chirping]
[tires screeching]
Are you going anywhere near San Francisco?
I'm going all the way, just gotta make
a fast stop at Flagstaff.
Great.
Hey, man, what's the chance of me jumping in the backseat?
Well, I ain't goin' to Phoenix, I'm going to Flagstaff.
Out of sight, I can grab a ride down.
I got sickness in the family, I gotta get home.
- Okay, get in the back. - Far out.
[instrumental music]
Where you from, Mary Anne?
Um, Omaha, originally.
But about the last...eight months
I've been just about everywhere.
What place you like best?
Mm, don't think I've found it yet.
Maybe it's just down the highway, huh.
Maybe it's just the highway itself.
[police siren blaring]
Boy...they got something going.
[blaring continues]
Now, you just let me do the talkin'.
And you just nod your heads to whatever I say.
Okay, Chuck?
Mary Anne?
- Morning, soldier. - Hi.
Would you and your passengers mind
identifying yourselves?
Oh, yeah, sure thing.
I'm on pass and Fort Harris.
This is my sister, Mary Anne, and her boyfriend, Chuck.
We're going to Phoenix.
Alright, Williams.
Your name, Davis?
Yes, sir.
Well, what happened?
Bank robbery.
Farmers and Merchants in Albuquerque.
Got hit just before they opened up.
Any idea who did it?
A lone g*nman is all we know.
Would you move on, please?
[intense music]
I can see why you wanted more people in the car.
[theme music]

Tonight's episode, "The Hitchhiker."
[dramatic music]
On the morning of December 9th
the Farmers and Merchants Bank of Albuquerque
was robbed by a lone young g*nman
who was described as calm and deadly.
By the time Inspector Lewis Erskine
arrived at the scene, the suspect had been identified
as US Army Private, Jerome Williams.
Absent without leave for 22 days
from Fort Harris, Colorado.
Ordered one of the tellers to put all the bills in a bag.
Then he made all the employees
and the patrons in the bank line up.
- Did he get in the vault? - No.
That's what's odd, inspector.
He only went to one teller.
It was almost as if he wanted an audience.
How were you able to identify him so quickly?
Mr. Edgars, the bank loan officer
recognized Williams this morning.
Apparently, Williams came in here two days ago
trying to get a car loan.
Edgars went over the application but had to turn it down
and he pulled the application before I came here.
'Williams claimed to be on leave'
'but I called the Denver office and I found out he was'
'AWOL from Fort Harris.'
They came up with his photo right away.
Hmm, better get this out in the flyer
along with a description of the car he was driving.
Yes, sir.
Was he, um, was he alone the first time he came in here?
Yes, and he was in uniform then.
This morning, he was, uh, wearing slacks, a brown shirt
and carrying a blue jacket.
It wasn't until the loan application was pulled
that we realized he was a soldier.
Were you able to determine the route that Williams
took after he left the bank?
Pretty much, the bank was hit about 10:07.
He was stopped by the roadblock at 10:35
which means he probably drove directly
through the Albuquerque central district
'and then swung on to Highway 40.'
And he had two other people with him?
Yes, and they weren't with him
when he drove away from the bank.
So he must have picked them up somewhere
between here and the roadblock.
[dramatic music]
Afternoon.
We're with the FBI.
Any of you recognize this man?
What'd he do?
He's a suspect in a bank robbery that took place a few hours ago.
He's armed and we think he has two other people with him.
Well, he did pick up Marry Anne
and some kind of lonesome cowboy-type this morning.
Do you know Mary Anne's last name or where she's from?
I'm pretty sure it's Collins.
And I know she comes from Omaha.
[Lewis] 'And the man?'
Just a traveler.
- Could you describe him? - 'Inspector?'
He's big and tall and blonde.
Long blonde hair and a leather hat.
Agents have interviewed Williams'
commanding officer at Fort Harris.
They're sending a teletype summary of Williams' 201 file.
What did his, uh, CO have to say about him?
No court marshals, no record of violence
but, um, he seems to have been kind of a misfit.
[Williams] We can hitch a ride in one of those rigs.
Well, most of those don't pick up riders.
Well, then we'll sneak on it.
Now, come on, let's quit worrying, huh?
Let's get out of here.
Say, I've never ridden this stuff before.
You're going with him?
Well, I don't know if we have much of a choice.
But, uh, why not?
What're you gonna do with the car?
I think I'm gonna leave it.
Probably broadcast the descriptions of it already.
Well, Farmers and Merchants of Albuquerque
didn't seem fit to loan anything on it.
And that's why you robbed them?
Because they wouldn't give you a loan?
Yeah.
Well, then they must know who you are.
[chuckles] They know alright.
I made sure of that.
Man, you should've seen their faces.
What're you trying to do, make a name for yourself?
Been nothing all my life.
Joined the army, you know, I thought
I'd figure out something, I was wrong.
But they ain't seen nothing yet.
'Does that, uh, surprise you?'
No.
No, not really, um..
...some of my best friends break the rules.
Hey, man, we helped you get through the roadblock.
How about lettin' us cut out now?
Okay, but I want you here to stay with me.
Now, why don't you come on? What..
- Uh, what're you gonna do? - Come on, let's go.
Hey, you're not gonna hurt him, are you?
No, alright, turn around, take your belts off.
No, no way, man.
Look, will you turn around and you just put your hands
behind your back and you'll be free in a couple of hours.
- Listen, don't tie me up-- - Man, will you turn around?
[g*nsh*t]
It was an accident, Mary Anne.
I didn't mean to sh**t him.
He's alive.
Alright, come on.
- Come on. - But we've gotta help him.
Alright, we can't do anything here. We'll get help.
Come on. Didn't mean to do it!
I was only trying to tie up his hands, Mary.
[instrumental music]
Your conference broke up early.
I gotta call you to identify the parents.
We're flying out to talk to them.
So I'll get back to Washington a couple of hours later.
No, we're filling in the picture on Williams
up to the time he went AWOL.
That's it.
I hope wherever Mary Anne is now
that's what she ran away from.
[dramatic music]
I'm going to have to ask you to excuse my wife, gentlemen
at least for the time being.
Of course, Mr. Collins.
Do you have a, uh, recent photograph of Mary Anne?
Yes, I think so.
- Here you are. - Thank you.
We'll, uh, need a physical description of her as well.
Well, let's see, she's, uh, nearly 20
Her hair's rather light.
Does she have any relatives in the Southwest
we could speak to?
No.
I don't think that I could give you one specific reason
why Mary Anne left this house.
We didn't have any...real trouble with her.
It was just that she always seemed to see things
exactly opposite from the way the rest of us did.
Whom do you mean by "The rest?"
Margaret, our son James.
I don't mean to sound like a stereotype parental apologist
but we did what we could, we...changed her schools.
'We finally found a school that was supposed to be very good'
at handling children with the..
Well, those who lack acceptable motivations.
[Margaret] 'I hate words like that.'
"Acceptable motivations."
Why don't they just say, some kind of pride and courage?
I'm-I'm sorry, gentlemen.
Oh, it's alright, honey, I..
...I just thought it would be easier for you up in your room.
Why did you think it would be easier for me sitting in a room
staring at four walls, with Mary Anne out there someplace?
Margaret, this is assistant director, Arthur Ward of the FBI
'and Inspector Lewis Erskine.'
Mary Anne does not come from a bad, broken home.
She comes from a good, loving one.
If she has a chance, Mrs. Collins..
...do you think she'll contact you?
I don't know.
I honestly don't know.
It-it doesn't matter, about my feelings anymore.
Get her back for us, please.
We'll do everything we can.
[phone ringing]
Hello.
Just a moment, please.
Inspector Erskine.
Thank you.
Erskine.
'Yes, Tom.'
You think it was Williams who called?
Where were they taking him?
And the Collins girl?
Alright, I'll be on the next flight out.
Found the young man, Williams picked up a few hundred yards
from the secondary highway, outside Gallop.
And? Tell me, inspector.
We still haven't found Mary Anne.
Oh, no.
[instrumental music]
What are you doing?
It just looked like you're freezing
I wanted to keep you warm.
Thank you.
Are we still getting off on Flagstaff?
Why?
Well, I was thinking before you know, your picture
and your name and everything's probably on television.
They may even know about me.
Sure wish I had time to see it.
Boy, you really dig it, don't you?
You really need that attention.
You know you said, um..
...you said something before about, uh, the army.
'You trying to prove how much you hate it?'
I loved it. Couldn't wait to get in.
Well, what happened?
Hey, if you're in the news too..
...you got folks that are going to worry?
[sighs] Yeah.
Listen, I-I don't suppose, maybe I could call 'em?
Why'd you split?
- 'From home?' - Yeah.
I...I couldn't breath there.
I don't know, I..
...I really feel kind of sorry for 'em.
They're so uptight.
You know, I don't think..
...that I can ever remember my folks laughing.
[scoffs] Isn't that weird?
Do you love them?
Oh, yeah, I..
Yeah, I guess I re...really do but..
...it sure hurts sometimes when I think about 'em.
'They're just..'
[sighs] '...I don't know, passing through it.'
Nothing really ever touches them or moves them.
Oh, I used to get so mad at them sometimes
I just wanted to scream.
Somehow I just know that..
...there's more to life than a trip to the dentist.
Hey, what about you?
You have family?
Just my brother, Joe.
Is that who we're going to see in Flagstaff?
Maybe.
[instrumental music]
Is Davis still in surgery?
It's been over two hours.
Well, I put in together what we got from the army and, uh
the report from the resident agent in Durham.
We have a pretty, complete picture of Williams.
He was born and raised in Durham and lived there
until he volunteered for the army.
Parents died in a fire, he was about two years old.
He has an older brother, Joseph.
Do we have a current address on him?
No, not since he was separated from the service in 1968.
Uh, military service records couldn't be more different.
Joseph Williams was considered
to be a resourceful, aggressive soldier.
Won several b*ttlefield promotions and commendations.
Is there an address on the brother in Williams' army file?
No and Jerry, well, his file has been sad.
He was at the bottom of his class in the training company.
Lacked initiative, company punishments
for minor retractions and finally, AWOL.
I'm sure young Davis is going to make it, inspector
his condition is much better.
But I'm carrying him as critical for the time being.
He's in recovery room now.
Now, I've left instructions to notify you as soon as
he's conscious and able to talk.
Thank you, doctor.
Well, so far at least Williams isn't guilty of m*rder.
[door closes]
[telephone rings]
Hello.
Why, yes..
Yes, operator, I'll accept the charges.
Hello, daddy?
Mary Anne.
Oh, thank God.
Are you alright?
Yes, I'm fine, I..
I thought you might be worried, so I wanted to call.
'Where are you?'
Well, I can't tell you that, I just wanted you to know
that I'm alright. Is mothered there?
[intense music]
Hello, darling.
'Hello?'
Hello?
- Mary Anne. - Who's this speaking, please?
This is Mrs. Fred Collin of Omaha.
Who is this?
'Officer John Brill, Flagstaff Police Department.'
Flagstaff Police Department.
[intense music]
[instrumental music]
We think the may be in this general area, right here.
Excuse me.
FBI.
Oh, yes.
Fred Collins, inspector.
Thank you.
Yes, Mr. Collins.
Inspector, we just wanted to tell you that
we're leaving for Flagstaff in a few minutes.
We'll be arriving there about 2:00 p.m., your time.
Well, you, uh..
You have the right to do as you please, of course, Mr. Collins
but, uh, I must point out to you that we can't involve you
in our investigation.
Oh, we understand that, but..
If we could just come to your office and-and wait or..
Or if we...well, we could just wait in our hotel room
until you call us with some news..
We'll do that.
Well, I can certainly understand how you feel.
You see, inspector
my wife and I have been talking and..
Well, I-I may have been too easy going
she may have been too strict
but there's one thing we do know
Mary Anne is out there some place.
And regardless of who's fault it is, uh
we want her back alive, inspector.
We want to see our little girl again.
[dramatic music]
[doorbell rings]
Hi, John.
Hello, kid.
Well, you really got yourself into something this time
didn't you?
Sounds like worse than it is.
That's what I wanna talk to you about.
Come on, come on in.
Oh, Mary Anne, I want you to meet my brother Joe.
- Hi. - Joe, this is Mary Anne.
I know.
Hey, I hear I got a new little niece.
Where's Helen?
Oh, she took the baby to the doctor's
for a check up.
Hey, I was just makin' some sandwiches.
- You kids hungry? - Starved!
Mary Anne, why don't you do it?
Oh, sure. Umm..
- Where's that, here? - It's, yeah.
You holdin' her against here will?
Na, no, not really.
You're lucky.
That kid you shot didn't die.
He's gonna be alright.
I'm glad.
Really glad.
So what are you gonna do now, Jerry?
Well, I got about 300 bucks.
And I thought if you'd lend me a couple 100 more
I'll get to Mexico, maybe even further.
You'll never make it.
The FBI and every cop between here and the borders
are lookin' for you.
What are you tryin' to do, tell me to turn myself in?
I'll get you the best lawyer we can afford.
I'll use every cent I've got.
Oh, man, I thought I could count on you!
I figured you're on my side.
I am..
Back in the County home, we were kids
you were always fighting for me.
And I'll keep on fightin' for you.
But I can't fight if you run.
I'm sorry, Joe.
- We're gonna be goin'. - What is this, huh?
This is isn't like you.
What started all this?
Couldn't cut it in the army.
- The army? - Yeah.
- You wanted to join. - Oh, I know.
I know, I wanted to be like you.
What happened?
You remember the grenade range?
One trainee throws then coaches the next, yeah.
Right.
Well, the trainee in front of me threw his..
...it exploded.
Got mine of the cartridge belt, pulled the pin..
...and I froze.
'I couldn't throw it.'
Couldn't let it go either.
Must have been about 50 men there.
And the guy right next to me..
It slipped, I would have been hit.
I couldn't even move.
Well, I got real quiet then.
And the range officer, he came down along the line.
And eased out the guy right next to me.
And then he, he pried my fingers, loosened the grenade
and he threw it.
He ordered me to leave the range.
Then I had to walk past all those GIs.
And everyone one of them lookin' at me like..
...like I was nothin'.
Took off that night.
I couldn't face 'em again.
So, you held up a bank.
You picked up two kids, you nearly k*lled one.
Did that make you fell big, important?
That make you a man?
Look don't you understand that I had to to somethin'?
All my life, everybody's always lookin' at me like
I couldn't measure up.
Like I wasn't good enough.
Hey, I, uh, I found some sodas
but I couldn't get the ice cube tray out.
- I'll get it. - Okay.
Don't worry, Jerry.
I'll help you.
[chuckles]
Thanks.
[telephone ringing]
FBI.
You sure?
It's Joe Williams, the fugitive's brother.
Inspector Erskine.
Inspector..
...my brother's here now.
'I'll keep him here till you come.'
What's your address there, Mr. Williams?
Apartment seven.
I'll try and get his g*n.
I don't want anything to happen to him.
Okay?
[intense music]
Handin' me over.
You're all I ever had in my life.
And you're just handin' me over.
[g*n c*ck]
[instrumental music]
[tires screech]
[muffled shouting]
Oh.
They can't have been gone more than 10 minutes.
What kind of a car do you drive?
Tan Mercury.
Arizona license KHQ-642.
They say where they were going?
Mexico!
Frank, call border patrol.
I had about 400 in cash
over time checks I cashed last night.
He took it all.
During the time they were here, did the Collins girl
seem to be hostage?
No, she was...quiet.
She seemed kinda shy.
But she did what he told her.
Seems like she...just kinda went along with what he said.
[instrumental music]
Well, miss
I've been gone three days
driven thousands of miles across three stats but
'you got to be the prettiest sight I've seen so far.'
Are you going anywhere near Phoenix?
[chuckles] If I don't, the boss gets a new man in the morning.
Hop in.
Stay right there.
Now you do what I say.
[engine revving]
You just keep it about 40.
What you got in these boxes?
Novelty items. Custom Jewelry.
[instrumental music]
Why don't just pull off the road
just past those railroad tracks?
[music continues]
Get out! Just bring the key with you.
Jerry, what are you gonna do?
You're they couple they've been talkin' about on the radio.
That's right, now you open the trunk, huh?
They've got road blocks setup all over..
All over the state.
Jerry, let's go.
This stuff looks awful good, Mary Anne.
- Is it? - Yes.
Yeah, well, how much is it worth?
It's insured for 20,000, take it.
Take it but just leave me alone.
Mary Anne, you can take one of these bracelets
we can sell the rest in Nogales.
I don't want anything, please let's just get outta here.
Alright, alright.
Alright.
[intense music]
Mister, we're gonna take a walk.
Oh, wait a minute..
Please, I got a wife and three kids.
Hey, you stop bargaining and start going, man!
- No, Jerry, don't! - Let go off me, will you?
[intense music]
[screams]
[grunting]
[music continues]
- Did you k*ll him? - No, I didn't k*ll him.
[sobbing]
You hurt him though, didn't you?
Why did you hurt him?
Don't push me, please!
All you do is hurt people and then run.
Will you lay off me, Mary Anne?
Jerry, I'm not going with you anymore.
I don't care if you k*ll me.
- Mary Anne-- - No!
Look, I didn't want it to happen.
I didn't want any of it, honestly.
Oh, no?
Well, you could have stopped it anywhere along the line
but you didn't, you just kept coping out.
Now who're you to talk about a cop out, huh?
You never stuck around for anything either.
You had everything goin' for you.
You had a family..
...and a home.
You had parents that loved you.
'You just gave up.'
Just dropped out.
So don't you go judgin' me.
[instrumental music]
Come on, let's go.
[music continues]
Have you alerted the border?
Yes, sir. We've covered everything.
Airline terminals. Bus and railroad stations.
The border patrol is set and waiting at
a half dozen cross link points.
[man on radio] 'DX-7.'
Seven.
'We have report just passed on by the Phoenix PD.'
'A motorist on Highway 17 saw a young couple'
'closely resembling Williams and the Collins girl'
'get into a car driven by a lone driver.'
Uh, this is Inspector Erskine.
Anything on the report on the circumstances?
'The girl was apparently out on the road, inspector.'
'The car was pulling over, she then waited while the man'
'who may be Williams came from off the road.'
'By the time the motorers passed them'
'both were in the car.'
Uh, it looks like the girl set the victim up this time.
[dramatic music]
[music continues]
[music continues]
Oh, well, where you going in such a rush, honey?
Listen, that phone doesn't work
is there one around here that does?
Well, sure, there's one right over there.
No, I can't go that way. He's there.
Well, who's he?
Well, you're in a little trouble, aren't you?
Listen, there's a man out on Highway 17
that's been hurt, maybe even k*lled.
What happened?
It's a jewelry salesman that, that picked us up
on the road and, and Jerry robbed him.
I tried to help the guy, but I couldn't.
[intense music]
Well, look. I'll take you down to the substation myself.
Now, I don't want you to worry about a thing, you hear?
[sobbing] Thank you.
[motorcycle engine revving]
[intense music]
[instrumental music]
Mr. Potter
I'm Inspector Erskine with the FBI.
'Is this the man who attacked you?'
Yes, sir.
Did you get any idea where he and the girl were going?
No. Wait, uh..
Uh, the kid said that they were going to
sell my samples in New Galas.
One thing more, did she help rob you?
No, she tried to help me.
She was as afraid of him as I was.
Thanks, Mr. Potter.
[instrumental music]
[Miles] 'Now, Mary Anne'
'your boyfriend has two cases of jewelry with a lot of money.'
I told you, he's not my boyfriend.
You're off the problem again, baby!
I don't seem to get through to you too well.
Please, couldn't you just let me go?
Now, the US customs department, they ain't about ready
to give your boyfriend a passport.
So that must mean he's got some other way
to get that jewelry into Mexico.
'For the last time, Mary Anne. Where?'
[sighs] I don't know, he had a map
and he said something about taking the Via..
The Via Marquez cut off, maybe?
Let's get started.
Well, you don't need me.
Oh, sure we do.
Your boyfriend's going to be missing you about now.
[instrumental music]
Inspector, this is John Camlin.
- How do you do? - Says that Williams was here.
Got some gas and then go about in a hurry.
What about the girl?
She left a message on a mirror in the ladies room
'asking for help and she gave us'
'Potter's license number of his car.'
She was with Williams when he left?
I'm not sure, sir, he took off so fast.
I don't think she was in the front.
'but she could have been in the back'
'or in the trunk, I guess.'
Is it possible she could have gotten out of here
without you seeing her?
Yes, sir, there is a small window in the back.
You know after he took off, I did see
sort of a pretty blonde girl around.
But I don't think it's the girl you're looking for.
Why not?
Oh, she was with some cycle jockey.
She rode off with him.
Two of his buddies were right behind him.
Thanks, Mr. Camlin.
[intense music]
[music continues]
[helicopter whirring]
[music continues]
[helicopter whirring]
[man on radio] 'Unit 7.'
Go ahead.
'Inspector, Arizona highway patrol helicopter 8A'
'reports no sign of subject vehicle'
'on state highway 84.'
'However, have recently observed three males accompanied'
'by one female at intersection'
'off 84 and Via Marquez cut off.'
'Female generally fit in the description'
'of Mary Anne Collins.'
How are they travelling?
'By motorcycles, sir.'
We're moving on the intersection indicated.
Converge.
According to the map, now that, that intersection
has been closed for months.
Not Williams' map obviously.
[instrumental music]
[motorcycle engine revving]
Spread out!
[g*nshots]
[music continues]
[g*nshots]
[music continues]
[music continues]
[g*nsh*t]
Hold it.
[Lewis] 'FBI.'
Get rid of the g*n.
Put your hands on your head.
Are you alright?
[instrumental music]
[instrumental music]
I, uh..
I guess, I really kind of made a mess out of things, didn't I?
I'm sorry.
You must be very tired.
Yeah, I don't think I've ever been so tired.
Would you like to come home?
[male narrator] Jerome Williams was tried and convicted
in Federal Court of bank robbery.
He was turned over to New Mexico authorities
and found guilty of attempted m*rder.
He was subsequently tried in an Arizona court
for aggravated as*ault and robbery.
Miles and his confederates were found guilty
of assaulting federal officers.
