[engine rumbling]

[music on stereo]

[humming]

[whistling]

Hey, give me a hand.

Yeah.

Hey, don't sh**t.

Wait, here's my wallet, take it. Take my truck.

[g*n c*ck]

Please, I'll give you more money. Please.

You don't know who I am. Jimmy Faron, Faron Ranch.

My father will give you anything.

'Anything. You name it.'

Get up.

That hurt much?

It just greased, but...I'm bleedin'.

Get in that thing and drive.

[engine starts]

[instrumental music]

On July 6th, an abandoned pickup truck

with New Mexico license plates was found near Skyler, Arizona.

A check with the New Mexico Department of Motor Vehicles

revealed that the owner was James Faron

son of Mark Faron, millionaire owner of one of the largest

ranches in the southwest.

When young Faron was discovered missing

and ransom demand was telephoned to his father

special agents of the FBI under the direction

of Inspector Lewis Erskine entered the case.

[Erskine] 'What time did you receive the call, Mr. Faron?'

[Mark] 'I'd say, about 4 o'clock.'

Oh, gentleman, this is, uh, Al Tanner.

Our head informant. It was a man's voice.

Said he had Jimmy, and for me to get 200,000.

He'd call back.

Where was your son going yesterday morning?

He was hunting out past Larrabee.

It's about a 50 mile drive.

He would've taken secondary Route 40.

You know, I'd like to ask you a question, alright.

Is it possible, I mean, can we..

Could we negotiate with the kidnappers alone?

If you wish.

I'd like to know what you have in mind?

Well, it's, uh..

I mean, all due respect to you

it's just that I-I think for Jimmy's safety

it'd be better if we handled the pay off ourselves.

You're out of line, Drake.

We need these men.

We're talkin' about Jimmy's life.

We're talking about our family, dad.

Now, we've handled everything by ourselves before.

You mean, I have. Now, you follow my orders.

Dad, you're not in any shape to give orders, that's the point.

Now, I'll go find Jimmy and I'll bring him back for you.

But we don't need any help from outsiders.

You don't..

[groaning]

- Dad, you alright? - Get away.

I just..

Tanner, when you get him in his room, call the doctor, will you?

He's awful sick.

Inspector, I guess I better take charge.

Now, what can I do for you?

I'd like to leave a couple of agents here

in case the kidnappers call again.

Alright.

Anything else?

[Tom] 'Inspector.'

One of the units reported finding a pickup truck

just off the road on 40.

There were a number of large boulders

blocking the road at that point.

They ran the license through DMV.

It had been reported stolen.

Excuse us.

He's restin' easy.

- He'll be alright. - But we won't.

Now, what happened?

I, uh..

I don't know.

I haven't been able to reach Cleary yet.

Well, you better reach him, and I mean fast.

- Do you hear me? - Just take it easy.

This could be a bluff.

I think Jimmy's dead already.

Dead or alive, we've been double-crossed.

And we're in big trouble, boy.

[instrumental music]

[music continues]

Drink.

'Don't think about it.'

'You are no match for me.'

Sit down!

Better eat.

Might be a long time before you get another chance.

- I've been thinkin'.. - No law against that.

About the way you robbed me.

'Strange way to hold somebody up.'

You're right. I was paid to k*ll you.

'And make it look like robbery.'

Paid?

By who?

There's nobody that hates me that much.

- Who was it? - I don't ask questions.

The middleman pays me, that's all I care about.

Contacted my father?

He agreed to pay for you.

[chuckles] Well, it's all settled then?

Maybe not. It's easy to ask for a ransom.

Maybe not so easy to collect it.

My father wouldn't do anything to put me in danger.

I heard about old Mark Faron. Real prideful.

He's a type who'd take more pleasure in gettin' me

than saving you.

Maybe I ought to wind things up right now

and...move out.

You're right. We're a proud family. k*ll me.

They'll find you if it takes the rest of their lives.

My father can't, he's sick, but my brother will.

Drake will find you.

You're showin' nerve.

Guess I should too.

I always wanted to know what it'd be like to be rich.

I'm gonna give the old man another call.

Will you let me go if you get the money?

Depends upon my mood.

I can never tell about my moods.

[instrumental music]

Mr. Ward on the radio, Lou.

Yes, Art.

What have you got, Lewis?

Well, pickup was stolen three days ago

from a parking lot in Larrabee.

We're still processing for latents.

Have you found anything?

A glove and a cigarette bud.

The same kind we found in Jimmy Faron's bronco.

I see from your teletype that the gasoline tank

in the victim's vehicle was nearly full.

That's right.

We're checking with all nearby service stations.

Any further word from the kidnappers?

'Not yet, Art.'

Alright, Lewis, uh

notify me as soon as you have any further developments.

[intense music]

Another cigarette, same brand.

Oh, let's hope he didn't use a lighter.

He didn't, inspector.

'S-E-N-S.'

Would be helpful if we had a couple of more letters.

Now, do the best you can, Tom.

[instrumental music]

[dramatic music]

Drake, I talked to Tanner. He told me what happened.

Sit.

Did you double-cross me, Cleary?

Oh, no, now, Drake, I swear, I--

I paid you five grand to hire a g*n, what happened?

- The g*n crossed me. - Who crossed you?

Well, his name's Lee Chard. He's a border dr*fter.

Look, I've tried, but I haven't been able to locate him

but I'm working on it.

Cleary, you know what I think happened?

I think maybe you guys just got your heads together

and decided to milk this thing for all the mileage, huh?

Not, that, that'd be, that'd be stupid.

Uh-huh, that would be stupid.

Now listen, Cleary, you better find this guy, and I mean fast.

Because if the FBI uncovers Jimmy and your g*n, and he talks

'I guarantee that you'll go out of business before I do.'

[instrumental music]

Get me reservations, please.

[telephone ringing]

Hello.

Faron?

'This is Drake Faron.'

I want to speak to the old man.

Uh, he's pretty sick.

Is this, uh, about the ransom?

You got it?

'Yeah.'

You'll need an air plane.

'Fly direct route from Larrabee to Benson.'

'Start out at 8 a.m. tomorrow.'

Benson, Arizona, is that where I make the drop?

No.

I will flash a mirror signal

about ten minutes after you cross the state border.

'Drop the money when you see it.'

Wait a minute, now, what, what if I can't pick up that signal?

You will. Put an X under a wing.

Everything clear?

Yeah, listen, is my brother alright?

He's fine.

If you want to see him again, don't bring the law in to this.

Stay away from the radio.

Just follow instructions.

Well, you heard him.

- What are your plans? - I'm gonna do what he said.

- I'll just use our plane. - The one outside?

Yeah.

[instrumental music]

Maybe you ought to get a twin engine. What do you think?

Don't ask me, I don't know anything about air planes.

Mr. Faron is asking for you.

See if you can find that aeronautical chart

of New Mexico, okay?

Yeah.

Yeah, you want to see me?

Any new on Jimmy?

Yeah, we just got another call.

I'm flyin' out tomorrow to make the ransom drop.

Oh. Where?

Well, I don't know for sure. Some place over Arizona.

They're gonna..

...signal me from the ground.

Is the FBI going along?

No, they're not. I'm going by myself.

Kidnapper say how Jimmy was?

Yeah, he says he's alright.

Hmm, that's good.

You know, I've been layin' here thinkin' about him.

You remember when he was ten years old

and he cut out that roan all by himself?

Yeah.

[chuckles]

That horse had spooked anybody else, but not Jimmy.

'Took him on like a..'

'...thirty year wrangler.'

Yeah, well, I got a lot to do.

I think I ought to head downstairs.

'Oh, Drake.'

- Yeah? - Bring him back safe. Please.

Sure.

Mr. Driscoll, this is Inspector Erskine.

Would you mind telling him what you told me?

Well, I might have seen the man you're after.

Would you, um..

Would you take a look at these?

Now, that's him, I'm certain.

And he was in the bronco?

Yeah, he was drivin'.

Looked kind of scared.

'The other fella did the talkin.'

Can you describe the other man?

'Kind of lean, narrow face.'

Maybe 35.

Dressed like a rancher.

Real nasty.

Told me to fill it up, then yapped at me

when I tried to check under the hood.

'Told the other fella to drive off.'

Mr. Driscoll, I'd like you to work with one of our artists

on the likeness of that man. Would you mind doing that?

No, I'll be glad to.

I didn't get a long enough to look at him

but I'll do all I can.

Thank you.

Well, fortunately, Larrabee isn't that big a town.

Good work, Tom.

Now, Michelosen's managed by a man named Sal Cleary.

He was out of town on business.

So I interviewed the bartender who was very cooperative.

He said that all the employees were accounted for, and, uh

except Mr. Cleary.

Was Jimmy Faron a customer there?

Yes, frequently.

According to the bartender he had a reputation

as a heavy drinker who made a lot of enemies

usually over women.

Does this Cleary have an arrest record?

Not locally.

Let's see what we can find out about him.

[instrumental music]

Drake, Cleary skipped town.

- But where? - Nobody's talkin'.

But the FBI was at Michelosen's, asking questions.

Give him about five minutes, he'll spill everything he knows.

Yes, I better ask around some more.

He must've told somebody.

What if I locate him?

I don't think he better come back, do you?

Uh, how do I arrange that?

I don't care how you arrange it.

You told me that accidents happen every day.

Isn't that what you said?

Yeah.

I located Cleary.

- Where is he? - Albuquerque.

What's he doin' in Albuquerque?

He's sellin' off all his property.

'Then he's gonna try to get out of the country.'

Well, you better get up there, Al.

I'm leavin' now.

[sighs]

- Drake. - Yeah.

You sure you got the stomach to go through with this?

I mean, it was easy enough to arrange

to have somebody else k*lled Jimmy, but, uh..

...if you have to do it yourself.

You just take care of Cleary, I'll handle Jimmy.

[instrumental music]

Go ahead, use it.

Before I k*ll you.

Why, Drake? Why?

You don't know why, do you?

What do you want, a list?

'You want me to show you the scars on my back?'

You want me to tell you about the 18 hour days

I put in for you since I could walk?

Look at me, I'm pushing 40, what have I got?

I got no wife, I got no kids.

Now, you scared every woman away from here.

They never looked at me twice with all that talk

about disinheritance.

You were so afraid somebody might separate me from the land

might steal your sl*ve away.

'All I ever had was you.'

Till your precious baby boy came along.

Go ahead, tell me how proud you are of him.

Let me hear that old story about

what a little man he was, how he separated that roan

when he was only ten years old. Let me hear that again.

- That's enough. - No, it's not enough.

I worked my back off for you, Jimmy never worked for you.

Jimmy was too good for work.

He shouldn't get his hands dirty.

No, just give Jimmy a free ride on your bank account

buy him a new car every time he gets tired of the color.

Well, now you're gonna die.

And who gets control of the ranch?

That's right, little Jimmy boy.

Little.. Little Jimmy boy!

You go on grubbing for him just so I grub for you.

Oh, you paid somebody to k*ll your own brother.

He belongs to you, not to me.

I saw the violence in you a long time ago, Drake.

The craziness that I couldn't tame.

Maybe my ways were hard, but it's all I knew.

'I couldn't let you have the land'

I couldn't trust in your hands.

Not something I worked all my life to carve out.

A man wants to know that what he's built will go on.

And Jimmy understood that, but..

But not you.

There was always a wall between us.

A wall I couldn't break through.

Why didn't you try?

Why didn't you, just once, try to talk to me?

Why didn't you before you did this?

[dramatic music]

Dad, put it down. Put it down.

[music continues]

Yeah, this is the Faron Ranch.

Get me an ambulance right away, will you?

[Erskine] 'Do you recognize this man?'

No, I don't.

I'm sure he's never been in here.

Where can we find Sal Cleary?

Well, I don't know.

Well, why should I?

I mean, I'm just an employee here.

He doesn't notify me every time he takes a trip.

You're not just his employee, you've been dating him recently.

Well, what of it?

That still doesn't mean he tells me everything.

Hey, look, would you excuse me? I got customers.

A man's life is at stake, and Cleary may be involved.

That's why we have to find him.

Will Sal be implicated?

His name is Lee Chard.

Don't ask me to spell it.

I only heard Sal mention it while they were talking.

Here?

Yes.

Chard came in a couple of times to see Sal.

'I never heard what they were talking about.'

- Where's Cleary now? - Albuquerque.

He owns a house there, but I don't know the address.

You sure there's nothing else?

Well, yes.

Alright, thank you very much.

Mr. Faron just suffered a severe stoke.

They rushed him to the city hospital.

His son, Drake, is with him now.

Call the Albuquerque office and bring 'em up to date

and ask the bureau for a check on the name Lee Chard.

[dramatic music]

[instrumental music]

He's unable to speak.

'He wrote this shortly after he was admitted.'

Seems he wants to tell you something.

Is he well enough for me to talk to him?

Go ahead.

Mr. Faron.

See if you can write down what it is you want us to know.

[groaning]

[mumbling]

We'd better let him rest now.

I'll notify if there's any improvement.

Hold on, sir.

Lou.

Mr. Ward.

Have some agents at the field when he takes off.

Yes, Art.

Lewis, I have the results for the name check on Lee chard.

His true name is Lee Everett Chard.

He has an identification record of armed robbery and as*ault.

'New latents found in the pickup truck and the station wagon'

'match his fingerprint record.'

Is there a current address on him?

No, but we're having El Paso check

with his former parole officer for one now.

I'll get back to you as soon as I have anything.

Fine, Art, I'm leaving for Albuquerque.

You can reach me there.

'Good luck, Lewis.'

[instrumental music]

[door opens]

[door closes]

Tanner?

What are you doin' here?

Little bird doggin'.

You, uh, clearing up?

Headin' back to Larrabee.

Are you now?

Is that why you got two big suitcases in your car upfront?

[chuckles] Hey, look at that?

You know, that's the first time I've seen Larrabee

spell M-E-X.. I-C-O.

[chuckles]

Alright, I want out.

- 'You blame me?' - I guess not.

You know, if you're smart, you'll get out too.

I don't know.

I got a lot of time invested in that.

Five thousand dollars make it worth your while?

[chuckles]

Thank you.

[chuckles]

Now I'm gonna have to see about killin' you.

[dramatic music]

Tanner, please.

Hey, now, why don't you, uh, have another little drink there?

All of it. It kind of helps settle the nerves.

I can't drink all that.

Oh...try.

[laughing]

Hey, now, that's very good.

Let's try a little more.

[music continues]

Aah!

[chuckles]

Now, we've located Cleary's address

through the city records.

It's at 4022 Rio Road.

- How far is that? - About 20 minutes from here.

[intense music]

[Cleary groaning]

[music continues]

Drop the g*n, this is the FBI!

[tires screeching]

[intense music]

[coughing]

[music continues]

[music continues]

[music continues]

Drop it!

Over against the rig.

Feet apart.

Tom!

[coughing]

[coughing continues]

[music continues]

And anything you do say may be used against you.

You can call a lawyer if you wish.

What do you want to know?

We want to know where Lee Chard is.

I never saw that man before.

Why did Tanner tried to k*ll you then?

He robbed me and he tried to get rid of me.

Cleary, I don't have to tell you that if Jimmy Faron dies..

'...it could make a big difference to you.'

Drake Faron payed me to hire Chard.

- What for? - To k*ll his brother.

[telephone buzzing]

Drake found out that his father was going

to change the will and leave everything to the kid.

Chard pulled a double-cross with that kidnapping.

I never heard from him again.

Drake Faron took off a few minutes ago as scheduled.

[intense music]

[grunts]

[plane whirring]

[intense music]

[helicopter whirring]

[woman on radio] 'County unit 1.'

Go ahead.

'What is your location?'

We're just passing over a heeler cliff monument.

'The additional helicopter unit you requested'

'is in the air now.'

'You can contact them on channel 3.'

[intense music]

[music continues]

[intense music]

[music continues]

[music continues]

[music continues]

[music continues]

[helicopter whirring]

[man on radio] 'Unit 2 to unit 1.'

One, go ahead.

'We've spotted a live shack in grid E2.'

'Vehicle parked near by, we're landing to investigate.'

[intense music]

Hold it, right there!

I'm gonna end it up right now. Sorry.

[Drake] 'Over here, Jimmy.'

Drake!

Pick up that r*fle and finish him.

It's alright, Chard, we're in this together.

I'm the one that hired you.

[helicopter whirring]

Finish him!

And then you finish me.

[Chard] 'Self-defense trying to rescue your brother!'

You got one second to do as I tell you!

Go on!

Go on!

[g*nsh*t]

[intense music]

[music continues]

Get help out here for him.

[music continues]

[indistinct]

Please don't try anything, Drake.

I'm begging you.

[g*n fire]

[Erskine] 'FBI, Faron!'

[g*nsh*t]

[intense music]

Looks like it's all yours, Jimmy.

I never wanted it, Drake. I would've given it back to you.

You're the only guy I ever looked up to.

Why'd you turn on me?

Any word on my father?

Yeah, we just heard from the hospital.

He's doing fine.

Come on, let's get you home.

[male narrator] Drake Faron and Lee Everett Chard

recovered form their wounds.

Chard was tried and convicted in federal court of kidnapping.

Faron and Albert Tanner were found guilty

of assaulting federal officers.

Faron, Albert Tanner and Sal Cleary were convicted

in state court for conspiracy and attempted m*rder.

[theme music]
