[male narrator] On the morning of April 19th, two armed bandits walked into

the Transworld Bank of Norfolk, Virginia

shot a guard, and escaped with $27,000.

By the time FBI inspector, Lewis Erskine

arrived to take charge of the investigation

an inventory of the bank's vault

had been completed

and normal business had resumed.

The inventory revealed that the bulk of the robbery

consisted of newly-minted $50 and $100 notes

which had just been issued by the Federal Reserve Bank.

And it's yet to be put into circulation.

So, the original sequence is undisturbed.

Bills are identifiable.

You've entered the nominations and serial numbers in the NCIC?

Yes, inspector.

The information is also being distributed

to law enforcement agencies, banks

and other financial institutions along the Atlantic seaboard.

How is the guard who was shot?

The hospital says he should make a complete recovery.

Good. Has the film from the bank cameras been developed yet?

They're doing it now, sir.

In the meantime, from interviews of witnesses

we know that both suspects

are in their early 20s, clean shaven.

One who did the sh**ting is about six feet tall.

The other one was called Bernie.

Inspector. Uh, we found the getaway car.

It was abandoned about a mile down the road.

It's, uh, stolen.

I'll have it processed right away.

Coincidentally, an informant says that they sound like

a pair who have been hitting liquor stores

here in the Newport News the last few weeks.

Both of them wore caps and dark glasses.

Big guy in a blue denim jacket.

- Short guy in a pea coat. - How short?

Hm, no more than five feet five or six.

I get the impression it might be a boy.

Did the witnesses report

anything unusual about these boys?

No, the big one is always the spokesman

short one never says a word.

said that the, uh, suspects in the bank camera picture looked

very much like the pair that robbed him just two weeks ago.

While you were gone, an informant identified

the taller one as Todd Rawson.

Bureau is checking for an identification record.

Inspector? It's Mr. Ward.

Uh, put it on the speaker, would you, Marvin?

- Yes, Art. - 'Lewis.'

'Todd Rawson's fingerprint record with the latents found'

He completed his sentence less than a year ago.

The person he listed to be notified in case of emergency

is his wife. Name, Bernice.

He called his partner Bernie. Is there record on her?

Yes, but it wasn't very productive.

The Rawsons avoided the usual sort of neighborly contact.

With one exception, next door neighbor, Mrs. Eberly.

Landlady says, that's Mr. Eberly there.

and definitely creepy.

He claimed he was in the lumber business

Some of the missing bills turned up in a women's shop there.

The couple who passed them fits the description of the Rawsons.

No, three witnesses positively identified

Todd Rawson's picture and stated he was accompanied by a woman

who matches the description of Bernice Rawson.

Also, some of the other bills turned up through the NCIC.

Agents there say the money was deposited in a bank

by a used car dealer.

The salesman who sold the car

positively identified Todd Rawson

as the one who passed the bills.

He also said Rawson had a woman with him

who matches Bernice Rawson's description.

There's Rudolph Colin Stowe who served time

in the same prison with Todd Rawson in 1966.

'Last known address we have is Athens, Georgia.'

I called a resident agent there

and they are out trying to get a line on him now.

of receiving bank robbery money.

of being an accessory after the fact.

In addition, the Rawsons and Dupre were convicted

in State Court of armed robbery and conspiracy.
