[knocking on door]

[music continues]

[male #1] 'Trask.'

- Hey. - Hey.

This is Doug Waters, George Barrister.

- Bozo Trask. - Hi.

Are you ready to go to work again?

If it's big enough.

How about a quarter of a million?

- Kulhane. - Hm?

[dramatic music]

Let's get out of here.

[man on radio] 'NCIC reports vehicle your description stolen'

'Seattle, Washington, April 5th.'

'Last identified as the second getaway car used in robbery'

'of Citizens Bank of Seattle, same date.'

'Car six and twenty four are being dispatched to assist you.'

'Over.'

[music continues]

Hold it!

[g*nsh*t]

[music continues]

Oh!

Hold it. Hold, hold it.

Get out of here.

[g*nsh*t]

Out!

Tonight's episode, "The Set-Up."

[instrumental music]

The as*ault of two Nebraska police officers

by three men sought for bank robbery

immediately brought special agents of the FBI to the scene.

As the second getaway car used by the gunmen was examined

along with the hotel room they occupied

Inspector Lewis Erskine assumed on the scene supervision

of the case.

[music continues]

How are the officers?

Well, they are in serious condition.

What has the hotel staff been able to tell you?

Well there were three men in the room

but only one of them signed the register.

Now the clerk described him as about 25

brownish blonde hair, medium height.

'He must have admitted his friends in'

'through the rear entrance.'

They evidently didn't wanna be seen together.

[man on radio] 'Unit two to unit one.'

One, go ahead.

We've got some good latent prints

from the car, inspector.

There's some, uh, clothing in the trunk

'and a portable typewriter.'

Ten-four.

[intense music]

Rex, pack the evidence up soon as you can.

I wanna get it back to Washington right away.

[Rex] 'Alright, sir.'

Ah, it's just a crease.

It could be worse than you think.

Nah.

Any trouble?

[chuckles] It's easy.

The owner won't be reporting it for a while either.

Well, we're driving in to Wichita and then split up.

We can't travel together any further. It's too conspicuous.

Uh, who's the mark we're gonna hit?

[Larry] 'Ever hear of her?'

No.

Lives in South Carolina, right outside Charleston.

She's got 200 grand in cash in her house.

[whistles]

Whoa, what kind of safe?

We don't know, maybe none.

We want you for insurance.

Now with that kind of dough in the house

she can't be living alone.

Who's the protection?

No private security, just a maid and a chauffeur

and an area protected patrol that covers the neighborhood.

Well, that doesn't sound tough.

Don't be so sure.

Mrs. Nolan's got a reputation for being

a tough shrewd old bird.

Finding out where that money is stashed might not be so easy.

It won't be. All the stories about her are true.

She doesn't scare. I've talked to people who know.

Now, there's a key to everybody.

Yeah, that's right.

We've got all the angles covered.

[instrumental music]

[music continues]

Lawrence Albert Kulhane.

Convicted of armed robbery and attempted m*rder.

Latents found in the hotel room match his fingerprint record.

- Did you trace the typewriter? - Yes, sir.

It was part of some merchandise stolen in a Seattle warehouse

six months ago.

Uh, this is all we could get from the imprints

left in the typewriter ribbon.

Hm.

"So Cohen feels I would.."

We couldn't make out the next few words.

"And cover the mark from the inside.

"I got a few thousand miles to cover yet.

"Today Kulhane stated not just robbery nor witnesses.

"It is to be a m*rder party.

"I don't like it.

But I'm powerless too."

Did you get an address?

No, sir.

What about the other evidence left behind in the room?

Well, the red case was rather unique.

There's an inscription inside

"To Doug, with love Donna."

The Seattle office is working on that.

[phone buzzes]

Yes.

[woman on phone] 'Mr. Douglas calling from Kansas City.'

Put him on.

Larry.

Mr. Ward, we located the car the subject stole

in Kearney, Nebraska. We're processing it now.

Uh, Lewis Erskine, Larry. Any further sign of them?

Yes, sir, a man fitting the description of the subject

who registered at the hotel in Kearney

stole a car Wichita this morning.

He assaulted the owner and left him locked

in an abandoned building in the downtown area.

'We've entered the description and license number in the NCIC.'

Good, Larry. Let me know of any developments.

[Larry] 'Right.'

You'd better get started on Kulhane's

known associates right away.

Whoever their intended victim is, there may not be much time.

[instrumental music]

You're George Lester?

Yes, ma'am.

The agency phoned me you'd be coming.

'Can I see your references?'

My butler died two months ago.

He'd been with the family for whole 30 years.

I've not altogether decided whether or not

I want to replace him.

[intense music]

Would you stand over there please?

Thank you.

Your son, ma'am?

Yes.

And my husband and daughter-in-law.

All three were lost in a sailing accident

a number of years ago.

I'm very sorry.

It was so tragically ironic.

My husband and I loved the sea..

Well, I'm digressing. You're not here to listen to my rambling.

You're an attractive, young man.

Why do you want to isolate yourself here

working for an old lady?

To be of help, if I may.

I warn you, I'm quite an eccentric.

One of your duties will be to read to me.

I don't see very well and I have dreadful headaches at times.

Being read to seems to help.

'Do you think you could do that?'

I think I could.

What happened to your hand?

An accident.

That is a terrible bandage.

[chuckles]

Here, let me see it.

There.

That should do it.

Thank you.

When can you start work?

You mean I'm hired?

You don't sound very happy about it.

Well, no, it's just..

Y-you haven't even taken the time to confirm my references.

That won't be necessary, I pride myself

on being able to read people.

I can sense responsibility

and honesty.

[intense music]

You have a remarkable gift.

[instrumental music]

[male #2] 'Come in.'

Inspector, is that you?

- Hello, Davy. - Sit down.

- How are you? - Oh..

Fine. What can I do for you?

You can tell me where I can find Larry Kulhane.

I'm sorry. I-I can't do that. I can't do that.

[coughs] It's been a long time

since that last arrest.

'Huh, inspector?'

I, I can re-remember going for that...g*n.

I grabbed at it.

[coughs] I was gonna go out like a..

...like a real squirt, shootin'.

Why didn't you k*ll me?

'Cause I had a chance not to.

I always wanted to thank you for that.

Dav..

...you don't owe me anything.

But you owe Larry Kulhane even less.

We have reason to believe he's planning a m*rder.

A k*ll?

No. No, no.

[coughs]

No!

[sighs]

[gasping]

Kulhane needed a safe cr*cker for a job.

I told him..

...I, I was too sick to cut it.

'Besides, I retired a long time ago.'

What's the job?

A woman...w-with a lot of cash.

He didn't give me any, no details.

'H-he didn't say where, where or when.'

Did he talk about finding another safe man?

No.

[panting]

He did, he did mention a wheelman.

Barrister.

'George Barrister.'

Inspector, one other thing.

He-he said..

...they've got a good lever

to use on the woman.

'He said she has a granddaughter somewhere.'

[instrumental music]

[music continues]

[church bell dinging]

[music continues]

[cat meowing]

[music continues]

Can you help me?

Please.

[cat meowing]

Oh.

Can you reach him? I heard him meowing when I passed.

He must have gotten separated from his mother.

[cat meowing]

[gasps]

Poor thing.

You must be hungry.

Look there's a snack bar over there.

Maybe we can get some milk?

Uh, look, uh..

- 'I gotta be going.' - Where?

All you've been doing for the past two days is following me.

[chuckles]

Okay, uh...guilty.

I...saw you a couple of days ago and, uh..

[chuckles] ...it's like a building fell on me.

Well, why didn't you just come over and say hello?

I, I mean that's the easiest way to get acquainted.

Are you new at Clermont?

Uh, yeah, I, uh..

[laughs] I'm in graduate school

You have got to be the shyest person I've ever met.

Would a cup of coffee loosen you up?

We could go and get that over at the snack bar too.

You always, uh, meet people this easily?

Oh, that's my thing.

Always dragging in stray cats and lonely people.

[music continues]

[phone ringing]

This is Nolan's residence.

[Larry] 'Barrister?'

Kulhane, where are you?

We just got in. How do we stand?

She's got a safe on the second floor with a combination lock.

'What's the situation that you're in?'

Not so good. We may need another box man.

- Trask hasn't shown up. - Well, maybe he was grabbed.

I don't think so. There's been nothing in the papers.

Maybe the action back in Nebraska scared him off.

Do we call it off?

'What, after all this work? I'll look for a local talent.'

I wanna hit that house as soon as possible. Now give me a time.

I'm not sure.

What is this, you're not sure?

That's why you were planted in the house.

Now give me a time.

Alright, tomorrow, the maid and the chauffeur are married

'and they're taking the day off together.'

Okay, good.

Now Waters is in position

in Wisconsin with the granddaughter.

Kulhane, is it necessary to hit the old woman?

You know the answer to that.

- Yes. - Barrister, are you alright?

- 'Yes.' - Okay, keep close.

I'll be in touch.

Who was that?

It was just a telephone solicitor.

Oh.

[instrumental music]

What is it, George? Is something wrong?

No, ma'am. Nothing.

Well, you looked troubled.

Is there anything I can do?

You're very kind. There's nothing to be done.

Miss Archer, I'm Inspector Erskine. FBI.

This is Special Agent Colby.

Okay.

I surrender, what have I done?

Before we go any further, Miss Archer

I want to advise you of your rights.

You have the right to remain silent.

Whatever you do say maybe used against you.

You can call a lawyer if you wish.

[chuckles] This is a joke.

Alright, what is it?

Do you recognize any of these men?

No, I don't.

We believe one of those men was involved in the robbery

of this bank last week.

He could have been one of the men?

I was too frightened to remember the faces.

That's hard to believe, Miss Archer.

You've been seen with him.

[chuckles] Well, that's..

That's ridiculous.

And we have a cigarette case with your name engraved inside.

Why don't you tell us about it?

[sobbing] Oh, please.

I'm only 20 years old.

I don't wanna go to prison.

He wanted me to help him.

And all I had to do is leave the side exit door open

after closing.

[sighs]

Didn't...take much persuasion.

I would have done anything for him.

Who?

Doug Waters.

'I bought that case for him.'

But he was the one who introduced me to Barrister.

And that other man..

They call him...Kulhane.

How did you meet Waters?

[sighs] At a little restaurant down the street

a couple of weeks ago.

'I was eating alone.'

So was he. We started dating the next night.

And where is he now?

I don't know.

I never heard from him or..

...any of the others after the robbery.

I want you to come with me please, Miss Archer.

[instrumental music]

[woman on phone] 'FBI headquarters.'

Uh, this is Inspector Erskine--

'Inspector, Mr. Ward's calling.'

Oh, would you put him through please.

- 'Lewis.' - Yes, Arthur.

Uh, Lewis, an informant in Omaha has

come up with some information on a safeman Kulhane contacted

in Kearney, Nebraska.

A Walter Trususky, alias Bozo Trask.

Trask, is he out of Atlanta?

That's right, informant says that's where he was headed

when he saw him.

He has a g*nsh*t wound and he's laying low.

'How soon can you leave, Lewis?'

Right away.

I've got the name of another member of Kulhane's g*ng.

[instrumental music]

[sighs]

Let me see.

Ah..

You have a very strong fate line.

And...I think that you're musically inclined.

Oh, I am. I am. I was a night club singer, you know.

Yeah, but, uh, I had to give it up because of an illness.

I made the audiences sick.

[laughs]

Funny. Let me see.

No, no, no. Now, it's your turn.

Who are you really?

Well, there's not much else to say, you know.

I was orphaned when I was six.

And my grandmother raised me.

She brought me up. She-she gave me the world.

I see, uh, sounds like quite a gal.

Oh, she is the world.

I'm, I'm going home next week.

I'm going away for Easter vacation.

Will you miss me?

[chuckles]

Oh, uh, I'll give you a thought or two.

[chuckles]

What's the matter? Do you have to go someplace?

No.

No.

[instrumental music]

[tires screeching]

Which is Trask's room?

The corner one on the third floor.

The informant was sure he was heavily armed.

That's the last of the tenants.

'We've moved them to an evacuation area up the street.'

There are only three families.

The building's soon to be torn down.

Alright, we're going in.

[intense music]

FBI, Trask.

[music continues]

[g*nsh*t]

[music continues]

Help me, please!

[music continues]

[clock chiming]

"And life is a narrow veil between the cold

"and barren peaks to eternities.

'"We strive in vain to look beyond the heights.'

[engine revving]

"We cry aloud.

"But the only answer is the echo of our cry.

"But in every night of death, hope sees a star..

...and listening love can hear the rustle of a wing."

Thank you, George.

[thuds] That was..

[dramatic music]

Who's that?

Will you see who that is?

Who are you? What do you want?

[music continues]

George!

I came here to rob you. These men are my accomplices.

If you co-operate, you will not be harmed

if not, we will use any device to get the money.

[intense music]

You don't have to say anything

and you may call a lawyer if you wish.

Oh, why shouldn't I talk?

I got nothing to hide.

What was Kulhane planning?

Well, how should I know?

I ran into him in Nebraska.

We, uh, we said hello.

Next thing, I'm in the middle of a gunfight.

He didn't tell me anything.

[Tom] 'Found this in Trask's room.'

What were you gonna do in Charleston?

Oh, take a vacation.

But I changed my mind.

Because you don't like murders?

Uh, it's probably already happened, inspector.

Telling you about it now is not gonna help me or you

or her.

It's just possible that it isn't too late.

And if it isn't, it could make a big difference to you, Trask.

[instrumental music]

- Thank you. - Welcome.

What's wrong?

My watch has stopped.

What time do you have?

Oh, I gotta get back to my place.

Uh, I'm expecting a call, so, uh..

Why don't you come back with me

and then we'll take in that movie?

- Sure. - Okay.

[music continues]

[music continues]

Open it.

I've no intention of opening it.

You're wasting your time.

And would you mind telling that creature

to remove his hat in the house.

Hey, looks like a tough one, Mr. Kulhane.

I don't know whether I can swing it or not.

[George] 'Can't reach Waters.'

Move aside.

[intense music]

Kulhane, don't lean on her.

At her age, she can't take much and we may need her.

I don't require your protection.

Try calling Waters one more time.

[intense music]

Hi, Bob.

We believe we've identified the safecracker

Kulhane's using in place of Trask.

His name's Art Stafford.

His wife came in voluntarily.

Mrs. Stafford, Inspector Erskine.

I tried to stop Art.

I told him not to get mixed up with Kulhane again.

What did Kulhane want?

I couldn't hear it all.

They talked in another room about..

...holding somebody up.

Do you know who it was?

Uh, I only heard Kulhane say

who put them on to it.

His name was, uh..

...Charles Kelly.

No, wait, uh...Skelly.

That was it. Skelly.

Oh, please..

...find him before he does anything, please.

Would you come with me, please?

Stafford has a local arrest record, inspector.

Two convictions for burglary. Expert on safes.

The bureau just forwarded Doug Waters

identification record.

He served, uh, one term for armed robbery

but basically he's a confidence operator preying on women.

[sighs]

Waters and Barrister.

Whereabouts unknown.

Kulhane and Stafford last seen in Charleston

And now our fifth name, Charles Skelly.

[dramatic music]

Still can't reach Waters.

Blow it.

Right you are, Mr. Kulhane.

Let me talk to her alone for a minute.

Okay. Come on.

[music continues]

Mrs. Nolan, use your head.

'Tell them the combination.'

'If they can't get the safe open'

I won't be able to protect you.

They plan to k*ll me after they obtain the money.

'Don't they?'

I'll stay alive only as long as they don't find it.

Let them do what they want to me, I'll fight for my life.

It won't be pleasant.

I don't expect it to be.

If you're so worried, why don't you help me?

Because..

Because you're afraid of them?

[instrumental music]

Charles Skelly?

Yes?

I'm Lewis Erskine, FBI.

This is Special Agent Colby.

Well, what is it?

Believe you were the brokerage house here in Charleston.

That's right. What do you wat?

First, we want you to know you don't have to say anything.

Anything you say can be held against you.

And you have the right to an attorney.

Where's Kulhane?

I'm sorry but I'm afraid I don't even know him.

I-I think you better take another look at this man.

You grew up together.

Oh, uh, yeah, yeah, that's Larry, alright.

Uh, listen, I'm sorry I didn't recognize him.

- It's been a long time. - It certainly has.

About two months.

Kulhane's at Bowford.

'He's going to pull a robbery.'

Where?

Mrs. Ardyth Nolan.

I think you better start at the beginning.

Mrs. Nolan liquidated some holding she had for some time

and she's been keeping the cash in the house.

My company had been trying to help her

'with a suitable investment for the money.'

So you called Kulhane.

[chuckles]

I thought about robbing her

but, uh, I don't have that kinda nerve.

I..

I sold the plan to Kulhane for a share of the profit.

Just a moment.

Units have been dispatched to the Nolan home

and the police have been notified.

[dramatic music]

[music continues]

Nothing there.

Of course not.

Why didn't you ask me?

It's too bad, old girl.

You had your chance.

[instrumental music]

[birds chirping]

Last chance, old girl, are you gonna talk?

I wouldn't condescend to talk to you under any circumstances.

'You're a common little hoodlum.'

Of course you won't do anything.

You're a criminal.

But I thought you had some, some breeding

some sense of decency.

[phone ringing]

Waters. Everything alright?

- It's all set. - Put her on.

Somebody wants to speak to you.

To me?

Who is it?

Hello? Who is this?

Bridy?

Grandmother, what..

Mrs. Nolan, I have your granddaughter c*ptive.

And I'll k*ll her anytime I'm ordered.

Keep the girl. I'll get back to you.

The money is downstairs in the library.

I'll show you.

[intense music]

I know you're going to k*ll me afterward.

Won't you mercy on Bridy?

'She's so young.'

If the money is there, she'll be okay.

[man on radio] 'Control to unit two.'

Go ahead.

'Unit five is in route to the Bowford address.'

Tell him we'll meet them there in a few minutes.

[man on radio] 'Roger out.'

Get it all out. Come on.

My grandmother..

...can't you do anything?

No.

How does someone like you live with yourself?

[sobbing] This is a nightmare, I can't believe

that you're the same person.

I liked you.

Yeah.

I liked you too.

Two hundred and five thousand.

[g*nsh*t]

[dramatic music]

No. Not fair.

Alright, contact Waters.

Tell him to get rid of that girl and get out of there.

But you promised you wouldn't. Not Bridy, please!

[dramatic music]

[tires screeching]

Mrs. Nolan, please turn around.

No!

[g*nsh*t]

[music continues]

[music continues]

Through there.

Mrs. Nolan, Kulhane's after her with a g*n.

Call an ambulance.

[music continues]

Barrister.

Where's Doug Waters?

Across Wisconsin. I can give you his address there.

[music continues]

Aah!

[music continues]

FBI, drop the g*n.

Hands behind your head.

[music continues]

Something soured.

[tires screeching]

Look, if I let you go

will you promise to forget everything?

That you ever even saw me?

Sorry.

[intense music]

[instrumental music]

Here's someone I think you want to speak to, Mrs. Nolan.

Bridy.

Oh, grandmother.

[sniffles] Are you alright?

Yes.

Why aren't you more careful, young lady?

I can say the same thing for you.

You're right.

I suppose one's, one's never too old to be gotten.

[Mrs. Nolan chuckles] 'Is that the right word?'

Taken.

It doesn't matter now, it's all over. We're safe.

[male narrator] Lawrence Kulhane, George Barrister

and Douglas Waters were tried and convicted

in federal court of bank robbery.

They were then tried in Nebraska state court

with Walter Trususky for the attempted m*rder

of police officers.

In addition, Kulhane and Trususki were convicted of

assaulting federal officers and Donna Archer pleaded guilty

in the Seattle bank robbery.

In the plot to rob Mrs. Ardyth Nolan

Arthur Stafford and Charles Skelly

as well as Kulhane, Waters and Barrister

were also convicted.

[theme music]

[music continues]
