07x26 - Escape to Nowhere

Post by bunniefuu »

[instrumental music]

I think you'll be needing this before the night's out, Grady.

I'll come in later and tuck around your shoulders.

You don't have to. I'll pull it up if I need it.

[chuckling] Oh, will you?

Or you'll just lie there and shiver.

I'll help you.

Wait, wait, I've almost got it.

[intense music]

Mom, what's the matter?

Shh!

Is somebody out there?

No, just be quite.

[footsteps approaching]

Hello.

Hello?

Hello!

[door knob rattling]

[glass shatters]

Ah!

[Grady] 'Mom!'

Alright, who else is in the house?

It's only my little boy and me.

- Where's your husband? - He's dead.

[dramatic music]

Alright, burn these!

We're gonna stay for a while.

I said burn 'em!

Tonight's episode

"Escape to Nowhere."

[instrumental music]

[male narrator] On September 7th, inmates Michael Durgom

and Raymond Everett Lockhart

escaped from a Massachusetts state prison.

After commandeering a car

the escapees managed to break through

a hastily erected road block

and sped across state lines.

The car was later found abandoned

near Sanford, Maine.

[woman over radio] 'Control to Unit 6.'

- This is Unit 6. - 'Stand by for Mr. Ward.'

Uh, Lewis, the owner of the stolen car

has been found near Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

He's suffered a concussion.

We found traces of blood in the car.

'Well, he wasn't hurt that badly.'

One of the subjects must have been wounded

when they broke through the road block.

We've alerted authorities on the Canadian border

in case they try crossing over.

Has, uh, Nelson Leyland made any moves yet?

Lewis, there's been a postponement of Leyland's trail

since Durgom agreed to be a chief witness.

So Leyland will be trying to find him, and fast.

[instrumental music]

Who did you contact?

Jerry C. He's got his best men on it.

They're covering everybody that Durgom ever knew.

What about the con that Durgom broke out with? Uh, Lockhart?

A dead-end. In stir too long and a loner.

No family or friends.

Hax, do you know how long I've slept since

Durgom agreed to give testimony?

You could count the hours on both hands.

You shouldn't have had Durgom hit that guy.

I needed the property.

And the owner wouldn't sell.

Besides, I didn't tell Durgom to k*ll him.

Just to scare him.

That was a mistake.

The biggest mistake was that Durgom got caught

and sent up.

Hax, do you know what I'm worth?

[chuckles] I can't figure that out.

It's all riding on a two bit hood.

And nothing..

...who could finish me in one minute before a federal jury.

Now we can reach him, if we move fast enough.

No problem.

Maybe there wouldn't be a problem

if we were the only one's looking for him.

[dramatic music]

Get me something to eat.

Go on!

[music continues]

That's a b*llet wound, isn't it?

Go stand back where you were.

Don't you ever say please?

You weren't brought up very well.

[Joan] 'Grady.'

[whispering] I don't want you talking to those men.

- I'm not afraid. - Then be afraid.

They're not normal, they're..

They're twisted.

T-they're frightened and desperate.

'Anything could provoke them into--'

k*lling us?

But I don't wanna be afraid.

Why don't we do something instead of just standing here?

Can't we make up..

[whispering] Can't we make up a plan to get away?

You two cut out that whispering.

[car horn honking]

Lady, come in here.

Who is that?

That's Ted Krane, a teacher.

He tutors Grady everyday. I forgot.

Doesn't he go to school?

No, he can't. His brace..

Get rid of him.

And don't try anything.

[knocking on door]

- Hi, Joan. - I'm sorry.

We'll have to skip the lesson today.

'Grady seems to have picked up a virus.'

Hmm.

Anything I can do?

No.

'I-I wouldn't want you to be exposed.'

I'll call you, Ted..

...when Grady is ready to get started again.

Okay, Joan.

Well, tell him to get well fast, huh?

[dramatic music]

[groaning]

You're still here.

I didn't figure you'd stick.

You helped me bust out.

I owed it to you.

You sure that slug is not still in there?

It never was.

Went clean through.

Feels like it's on fire.

It probably is. It could get infected.

You got any antibiotics in the house?

No.

That's empty.

I can see that. What was it?

I'm not sure. I had an ear infection.

[chuckles]

Well, we got to do something.

We'll get this refilled.

You're going for a ride, the two of you.

Get your coats.

Come on.

Find me one, too.

[dramatic music]

Hey, Ray?

I'm gonna find a phone that works.

'We'll be right back.'

Hang easy, huh?

Yeah.

Thank you.

Miss Moyer?

The name is Sunny.

And I don't recall being booked for this hour.

Inspector Erskine, FBI.

I'd like to talk to you about Michael Durgom.

I had a feeling this would happen.

But I don't think I could help you, inspector.

I haven't heard from Mike since I left Philly.

I beg to differ.

'You wrote to him while he was in prison.'

Alright, I did.

But I haven't had a word from him since he escaped.

Do you know many of his friends?

That's funny.

It never hit me till you mentioned it.

I never even met one.

Of course, I wasn't a stylist then.

Just a kid doing nails.

Maybe he was ashamed of me, you think?

He probably didn't trust me.

There weren't many people he did.

Were they any?

Yeah, a guy he grew up with in Newark.

They were like brothers, I guess.

Though they weren't really.

'I never met him, but Mike used to talk about him.'

What was his name?

Gee, inspector..

I mean, I'm not hung up on Mike anymore.

Wouldn't defend what he's done but--

But you don't wanna get involved.

I don't know if it's his last name, first name

nickname, whatever.

All I know is that Mike called him Buck.

Thank you.

[telephone ringing]

Hello.

Yeah.

Durg! Is it you for real?

Easy, Buck, let's keep it to ourselves.

Anybody been around to see you?

No, no, everything is cool.

But how can I help?

You say it, you got it.

Well, you know the fix I'm in.

I need money.

'Enough to get to Canada and grab a ship.'

I'll give you whatever I got.

Forget it, the kind of money I need..

...comes in banks.

Remember the job we planned before they nailed me?

Yeah, sure.

The bank.

Well, that's our play.

It's still there, waiting.

It is.

But where are you?

You don't need me, Buck.

You can do this one on your own.

Solo? Come on.

I need help, a wheelman, anyway.

I got a way it could work.

Hold it.

Yeah, okay.

Yeah.

That might work.

And it'll be one time I wouldn't have to pay off a wheelman.

You gotta finish the job by tomorrow morning.

Tomorrow?

That doesn't give me much time.

There isn't any time, Buck.

It's fourth down and long yardage.

You gotta connect with the big one, Buck

or I'm dead.

I don't know. I'd be sticking my neck way out trying this.

Don't forget I saved that neck of yours once.

You owe me.

Alright.

Where do I reach you after?

Right where you are.

I'll call you at noon tomorrow.

Right.

[dramatic music]

Go, mom! Go now!

Quick!

Why didn't you go, mommy? I told you to.

I told you.

She wouldn't go anywhere without you.

Come on.

Let's go.

[music continues]

Yeah, Doug, I think Durgom just gave him the call.

[instrumental music]

[woman on radio] 'Unit 3.'

Three, go ahead.

'Stand by, the bureau is calling.'

'Assistant Director Ward for Inspector Erskine.'

Lewis, the Newark office has come up

with some background information

on the name you sent in.

According to acquaintances of Durgom

Buck is the nickname of Jack Buckfield

an old friend of his.

They lived near each other, attended all the same schools.

They played football together in high school.

They built up quite a reputation

as a passing combination.

'Durgom was the quarterback, Buckfield was the end.'

Any word on Lockhart?

The Albany office reports there's been no sign of him

at his old hangouts.

And informants say no one has heard from him

since he and Durgom escaped.

Do you have an address on this Buckfield?

Agents are trying to locate him now.

I'll alert the Newark office that you're on the way.

Alright, Art.

[instrumental music]

Oh, Jody, hi!

How are you?

How's Grady?

He's better actually, thanks.

Oh, good.

Yeah, kids bounce back so fast these days

you couldn't keep him safe if you wanted to.

You're scared, aren't you?

There's nothing to be scared about.

Your mother is too smart to try to pull anything.

I could've got that for you. Why didn't you call me?

- I-I, I don't know, I.. - Why not?

I guess it just didn't occurred to me.

Oh, you should've done it. I'd have been glad to do it.

What?

Look, I'm trying to talk to you.

I-I'm sorry, Ted. Grady is alone. I'd better start back.

Hey, listen, why do you always

take off every time anybody gets close to you?

What are you afraid of?

Afraid?

Yeah.

Why do you put these big walls around yourself?

I don't have to justify myself to you, Ted.

That's right.

But someday, you're gonna have to

justify yourself to Grady.

He's the one who's gonna pay for it.

You're out of bounds, Ted.

[dramatic music]

Took a long time. What did he want?

He was worried about Grady.

He was only trying to be helpful.

How'd you handle it?

I told him we didn't need his help.

That was wise, lady, real wise.

[music continues]

We have the address of Buckfield's apartment

and his hangout, a pool hall.

- Both are under surveillance. - No sign of him?

Not yet, inspector.

But we're sure he's still in the city.

Informant told us he spent last night shopping around town

for a Colt g*n.

[instrumental music]

Let the meter run.

I want you to wait for me.

You've already got seven bucks on the meter.

Now, will you wait for me?

Oh, sure thing.

See what he's doing.

[music continues]

Come on, hurry up. Over there, over there!

Out from behind the..

He's pulling a job in there.

Move!

[intense music]

Alright, nobody moves.

Stop!

Drop it!

[g*nshots]

Drive this thing.

Now, drive this thing.

[music continues]

[instrumental music]

NK-1, go ahead.

[man over radio] 'The New York office reports'

'the Canal Street's Savings Bank in Manhattan'

'was just held up by a g*nman'

'whose description matches Jack Buckfield.'

This is Inspector Erskine. Was he alone?

'Witnesses report he arrived alone in a Newark taxi.'

'But during the robbery, two men slugged the taxi driver'

'and pushed him into the street.'

'They were waiting in the cab for the robber'

'when he came out of the bank.'

'They also apparently abandoned the vehicle'

'they'd been driving.'

'New Jersey DMV reports it as stolen.'

'Agents are processing it now.'

[knocking on door]

Mr. Rennit?

I'm Inspector Erskine, FBI.

This is Special Agent Colby.

I wish I'd have met you guys an hour ago.

Would you look at these please, Mr. Rennit?

Uh, yeah, sure.

This is the guy, this is the guy that went into the bank.

Tell us what happened.

Well, I-I got a call to pick him up

on Highsmith and 6th.

A well dressed guy with a briefcase.

I-I kinda figured him being an executive or something.

You know, late for a meeting.

So, I-I didn't give it a thought

when he asked me to drive him to Manhattan.

Where in Manhattan?

The Union Trade Building.

Uh, he said he wanted to stop over the bank

to pick up some papers.

Could you identify the men who attacked you?

N-no, I didn't see them.

All of a sudden, whap!

I got sucker punched from behind.

Well, they must've used a sap because..

Well, I-I didn't wake up for about ten minutes.

Hey, uh, any word of my hack?

It was found just outside Newark.

Oh, that's a smart hack.

Thanks very much for your help.

Yeah, yeah, anytime.

[Adams] 'Inspector.'

Witnesses in the bank made a positive identification

of Buckfield's photograph.

And the cab driver, too.

See if the US Attorney will authorize a warrant.

Yes, sir.

[instrumental music]

[whirring]

You've been scrubbing that floor for an hour.

Take a break.

I can't.

I've got to keep occupied.

I said take a break. You're getting on my nerves.

[music continues]

Since your husband's been dead for over a year..

...what are you hanging on to his things for?

For reasons you wouldn't understand.

I understand, alright. You just won't let go.

How'd your husband die?

He was spelunking.

He was what?

Exploring caves..

...with Grady and some of Grady's friends.

Grady slipped and fell about 20 feet.

Sledge got wedged and d*ck was trying to get to him.

[scoffs]

d*ck was always doing something dangerous.

He never could just be normal.

You sound like you're mad at him 'cause he died.

- That's my dad's favorite-- - 'Grady!'

Let go of it or I'll..

Or you'll what?

Get into a beef with me?

Hey, that's not a bad idea.

A little roughhousing might relax us all.

Here, hold this.

Alright, kid.

You've got two free swings.

'You ready?'

[grunts]

Alright, now, set yourself up.

Now, really, right here. Come on, come on.

- Ow! - Stop it!

'Oh, come on, lady.'

I'm not gonna hurt..

That's quite a kid.

Just don't you pull anything like that again.

You don't scare easily, do you?

Suppose I take you along with me.

I'd run away.

Don't you wanna get out of the house?

Mom says I can go back to school soon..

...with other kids.

Why won't she let you go now?

She's afraid they'll laugh at my leg.

'But I don't care. I wanna go.'

You're right, you know.

No one likes to be in a prison.

That's enough.

We're doing just fine without you--

Have you?

- Go on, get dressed. - Come on, I'll help you.

Can't you let him do anything by himself?

What right do you have to interfere with us?

Go on.

Show your mother you can get dressed by yourself.

[instrumental music]

- What? - 'You alright?'

Yeah, yeah, I'm feeling a lot better.

You well enough to look after the woman?

Sure.

I'm taking the kid along for insurance.

You're not leaving here alone with Grady.

Now you shut up!

That's what I said and I mean it!

[music continues]

[door closes]

[instrumental music]

[tires screeching]

NK-1 to all units.

[music continues]

He's ten minutes late.

You sure he said 12 o'clock?

Yeah.

I don't know how much longer I can hold up.

[telephone ringing]

You better sound good and healthy, huh?

- Hello. - Buck, is that you?

- Yeah. - Tell me what I wanna hear.

It went beautiful.

'How much?'

I counted 36 grand.

You ready to roll?

All I need is an address.

[instrumental music]

[tires screeching]

Anyone else inside?

Just the proprietor and one of our agents.

The US Attorney has authorized Buckfield's arrest.

Buckfield and his two friends are at the phone.

The exits are covered. All units are in position.

Tom, you and Adams join the units in front.

Let me know when you're ready.

[music continues]

[Sherock over phone] 'It's the, uh, last house on Shore Road and Smallpoint Main.'

Follow Route 1 to Bath

then swing south on 209 all the way to Lion's Inn.

Okay, well, did Buckfield tell him how soon he'd be there?

'Said it'd take a few hours by the time he got a plane.'

Okay, we'll take it from here.

You just stay where you are till I get back to you.

There's no contract on this one, Hax.

It's all yours.

This one is for all the marbles.

I want the best man I could get.

Alright.

Buckfield said that Durgom was holding hostages.

A woman and a little boy.

I don't think it'd be prudent to leave anybody.

Fine.

[intense music]

[Colby] 'FBI!'

Hold it right there!

[g*nsh*t]

[g*nshots]

[music continues]

Alright, stand up.

Alright, let's go.

Inspector, Buckfield's unconscious.

I don't think he'll tell us anything for a while.

I'll call an ambulance.

[instrumental music]

Alright.

Hey.

- You're up. - Yep.

- How are you feeling? - Fine.

You know, I don't know what was in those pills

but they really did the trick.

Mm-hmm.

When is that friend of yours gonna get here?

Pretty soon.

Who are you waiting for?

A friend.

When will you be leaving?

You'd like that, wouldn't you?

[scoffs] Well, it's not over yet.

A lot of things could still go wrong.

But one way or the other, I'm getting out.

I might just decide to take your car

'and head for the border.'

Do you really think they'd let you cross the border?

Oh, yeah.

Especially if I took a couple of hostages along.

What's the matter? You're not so talkative.

[dramatic music]

Yes?

Oh, good, put him on.

Art, Buckfield just came out of surgery.

But it'll be a while before we can interview him.

What about the other two? Sherock and Orkut?

They refuse to talk.

Thank you.

Oh, Lewis, the Philadelphia office surveillance reports

that Walter Haxby, one of Leyland's lieutenants

just purchased an airline ticket for Portland, Maine.

Portland is only a short distance from the place

where Durgom and Lockhart abandoned their car.

[groans]

You getting itchy?

Yeah, I guess I am.

This friend of yours is coming? Buck?

He wouldn't double-cross us, would he?

No way.

I keep thinking about what you told me

back in the stirrer.

You know, about the prize Leyland put on your head.

A hundred G's.

'That's enough to change a man's thinking.'

A lot of guys maybe.

But not Buck.

You know, it's funny.

I don't think I ever had a friend like that.

I mean..

...someone who would really lay it on the line for you.

I did.

Yeah, that's right. You did.

[instrumental music]

Inspector.

- Tom. - Scott.

Haxby just got in.

He's in the process of renting a car now.

We have him under surveillance.

Here's his photograph.

[dramatic music]

[music continues]

[music continues]

You can't just tie us up and leave us.

'It could be days before anyone finds us.'

Alright, come on, little fella.

No!

[Durgom] 'Lockhart, move her off me.'

[Joan] 'No.'

[dramatic music]

Lockhart..

Wait!

I should've known.

You're going for the prize Leyland put on me.

I should've known.

A hundred grand's a lot of money.

Why did you wait till now?

It was too risky.

I couldn't collect the money in jail.

'It'd only work if we were both out.'

[Durgom] 'I should've dumped you at the roadblock.'

[Lockhart] 'That would've been the smartest thing you could've done.'

Get back!

[intense music]

[groans]

[glass shatters]

[music continues]

[grunts]

[music continues]

[dramatic music]

[groaning]

We should've gone to the road.

No. That's the first place they'd look for us.

Come on. There's a million places to hide.

[music continues]

[car approaching]

[music continues]

[music continues]

[twig snaps]

[music continues]

[Lewis] 'FBI.'

Drop the g*n.

Hands behind your head.

[g*nsh*t]

[Colby] 'Alright, that's far enough.'

Put your hands behind your neck.

[intense music]

The ambulance should be here any minute.

Where's Durgom?

There was a woman and kid.

They took off in that direction.

Durgom was after 'em.

[instrumental music]

[music continues]

He's gone.

[intense music]

Durgom, this is the FBI. Throw down your g*n.

[g*nshots]

[music continues]

[instrumental music]

I don't need it.

Oh.

I see.

I see I'm going to have to learn to stop

treating you like a little boy.

Just one more hug.

[music continues]

- It's really over, isn't it? - Yes, it is.

Goodbye, Mrs. Forrestal.

[male narrator] Michael Durgom and Raymond Lockhart

were found guilty of kidnapping

and were returned to prison to serve

the remainder of their sentences.

They were also tried and convicted

in federal court of interstate car theft.

Jack Buckfield was convicted

in federal court of bank robbery.

Durgom, Walter Haxby and Douglas Sherock

were found guilty of assaulting federal officers.

Victor Orkut and Douglas Sherock

were convicted of kidnapping.

Nelson Leyland and Walter Haxby

were also convicted in federal court

for conspiracy to obstruct justice.

[theme music]

[music continues]
