08x11 - Canyon of No Return

Post by bunniefuu »

Let's get going. Where's your car?

It's up there behind the trees.

Give me the keys.

Oh, wait a minute.

There may be a better way.

Car might just run into a road block.

Where does this river go?

Oh, it goes through a lot of canyons and, uh

beyond that, to the coast.

Hey, you hear that, Taggot? We're gonna float out.

They won't be looking for us on the river.

But in case they do, why, uh..

...we got us a good pair of hostages.

Inspector Erskine, Air-1.

[man on radio] 'Go ahead, inspector.'

We're starting out now. What's the location of the raft?

[man on radio] 'They're beached about 25 miles down stream from your position.'

Keep me advised of their progress.

And all units prepare to intercept at Wilson Creek.

[man on radio] 'Roger.'

Just relax, mister.

- How many guests? - Seventy.

Show me the register.

'Come on!'

Where's the safe?

Inside.

Back!

Easy. Just stand up.

Sit down there.

Hands behind your back.

[music continues]

There! Open it!

Alright, back up! Get down!

Hands behind your back.

[music continues]

Where is my mail?

Hey, you!

[music continues]

Get me the sheriff's office.

They're here now, sheriff.

They've got the employees all tied up

and they're robbing the safe. They've got..

Guy got away from me.

- He called the law. - We better split.

No, there's thousands of diamonds in there.

- But the cops.. - Go get 'em.

[dramatic music]

[music continues]

[sirens blaring]

[dramatic music]

They got away, sheriff.

They hit me and they got away.

[engine rumbling]

[laughing]

Show off the goodie!

[all laughing]

- Yeah. - Look at it.

Hey!

[theme music]

[male narrator] The report of a daring robbery

of over $200,000 in jewelry and currency

from the safety deposit boxes

of a Northern California resort hotel

and the description of the aircraft

used by the criminals in their getaway

were immediately radioed to authorities

in the area and surrounding states.

When it was learned the aircraft

had been spotted in Oregon

the FBI entered the case and Inspector Erskine

who was preparing to fly to Washington from Portland

changed his plans in order to spearhead the investigation.

Any further word on the plane?

Uh, no, sir. It passed over Almo about an hour ago.

No one's spotted it since.

'We've alerted all the ranger stations'

'and the civil air patrol is assisting.'

An hour ago, huh?

Alright, we'll concentrate the search in here.

[phone buzzes]

Excuse me.

Greevy.

Mr. Ward, sir.

Arthur.

What other evidence do you have, Lewis?

Well, aside from the r*fle safe deposit box

we have a suspect.

A safe cr*cker by the name of Clifton Taggot.

He was seen in the general area by an informant

and uh, one of the eye witnesses

who got a look at him without the mask identified his picture.

Have you traced the car the suspects used?

It was stolen from a garage in Reno three days ago.

You have any other evidence on the subject's aeroplane?

Not since the ranger spotted it.

Well, intensify the search around Cooke's Pass.

'Use all the men you need.'

Hold this.

Now what is it? What's the matter?

When I find out, I'll tell you.

- Look, Keene-- - Taggot, take it easy, buddy.

Keene, we can't stay here.

That sky's gonna be lousy with search planes.

We better start walking out now!

I think I can get this thing running again.

- Are you sure? - No, but--

Well, then we walk.

Not me.

Do you know where we are?

Right in the middle of nowhere.

If that's the way you want it..

Keene.

Call your split.

Okay.

Fair?

Fair.

Wait a minute.

You're, uh, city boys. Let me give you some advice.

Head West for the coast, Horizon beach.

You can grab a car there, maybe a plane at the airport.

Don't forget the canteens.

- See ya. - See ya.

Al.

- k*ll him, first chance. - Huh?

sh**t him, drown him, push him off a cliff, anything.

But get rid of him.

Why?

You've never worked with Taggot before but I have.

Too much pressure and he cracks.

He'll get you both k*lled.

I'll take my chances, huh?

Suit yourself.

You know, you're cool.

Got a lot of nerve.

Still can't understand why Hewitt put you two together.

Unless he felt maybe he needed him as a box man.

Anyway, you know something?

You and me, we'd be a good team.

If we ever get out of this.

Yeah.

Take care.

You, too.

[dramatic music]

Taggot.

[chopper whirring]

[Tom on radio] '4 to 1.'

Go ahead, Tom.

[Tom] 'Lou, we've spotted downed aircraft in grid E3.'

'Request permission to land and investigate.'

We'll join you.

[Tom] '10-4.'

[dramatic music]

[music continues]

[music continues]

Uh, looks like, uh, three sets of foot prints, Lou.

Uh, two other men...headed West.

And the other one stayed around a little while longer

camouflaged the plane and then took off in that direction.

Tom, uh, get that number back to the FAA.

I want to know who owns this thing.

- Ah! - Keep moving.

Why?

What for? We're lost?

We don't even know where we're headed.

I said move!

Okay.

I said okay.

What's the matter?

[airplane droning]

It could be nothing.

It could be they're looking for us.

That's the second one in less than an hour.

Come on.

[instrumental music]

Changing locations?

- No, going home. - Oh?

Thought you were planning to sail on Sunday.

'Weather should clear out pretty soon.'

It's not the weather. These..

...vacation things sometimes just don't work out.

Can I, uh, can I help you with the raft?

No, I can manage.

Hey.

Thanks for everything.

Well, if you change your mind

I'll be camped just a quarter mile away.

Thanks.

[music continues]

[music continues]

Jim.

Well, we tried.

May be we just..

...didn't go far enough away.

'Why don't we try some place else?'

Why?

'All we're gonna find is ourselves.'

What are we gonna do?

I don't know.

Hardest thing is gonna be telling the kids.

Let's just finish this up and get out of here.

Hello.

Car broke down. Been hiking it for miles.

We, uh, sure are glad to see somebody.

[dramatic music]

I see.

- You alone? - Uh, no.

There's a, uh, uh, a group of men

camping over there behind the rocks.

Oh, yeah?

They're awful quiet.

You have a pretty wife.

[dramatic music]

Look, we'd like to help you, but we got to leave now.

Yeah, let's just do that.

Pack this, too, while you're at it.

Look, I don't know what you guys want.

Just do what I say. Okay?

Now, let's get going. Where's your car?

It's up there behind the trees.

Give me the keys.

Oh, wait a minute.

There may be a better way.

Car might just run into a road block.

Where does this river go?

Oh, it goes through a lot of canyons

and, uh, beyond that, to the coast.

Hey. You hear that, Taggot?

'We're gonna float out.'

They won't be looking for us on the river.

In case they do, why, uh..

...we got us a good pair of hostages.

'And you are gonna be our skipper.'

Oh, look, I'm just fishin' here. I don't..

I can't handle those rapids. It's suicide.

Please, uh..

Take the raft o-or anything. Just, just leave us alone.

You're gonna have to try, mister.

'We're not leaving anyone behind.'

And if we make it, then what happens?

Why don't we just wait and see?

[instrumental music]

[instrumental music]

[music continues]

[airplane droning]

[music continues]

'Yep, this is where they were camped.'

Their station wagon's still parked back up there.

Looks like the food supply is missing and..

...some of the camping gear.

Anything else?

Yeah. Yeah, they had a raft with them.

There you are.

Looks like they had visitors, alright.

Let's request an immediate air surveillance of the river.

And we better alert inspector Erskine of the possibility

that our fugitives now have hostages.

We'll continue our search along the river

in case they double back.

[dramatic music]

What have you got, Graham?

The FAA has traced the registration of the plane

to a Carl Hewitt.

'He has a record for armed robbery.'

'But informants say that lately he's been'

'operating as an architect.'

Setting up jobs for others.

[music continues]

[engine cranks]

FBI, Hewitt.

[dramatic music]

[engine revving]

[tire screeching]

[tire screeching]

[dramatic music]

[tire screeching]

[engine revving]

[music continues]

[music continues]

[machinery whirring]

[instrumental music]

[music continues]

[machinery whirring]

[intense music]

[music continues]

[instrumental music]

Hold on!

[music continues]

- Stop this thing. - I can't.

You heard me. You're trying to get us k*lled.

I can't control it.

[dramatic music]

You don't have to say anything.

You may call a lawyer if you wish.

Did you get Taggot and Lozano?

Al wouldn't talk.

I figure Clift probably told you

I was the architect on the Santa Rosa job.

Who else was in on it?

The pilot.

Fey Keene.

I waited as long as I could.

I figured they'd been grabbed and finked on me.

That's why I was headin' out.

Trackers in the vicinity of Cooke's Pass

are getting close to one of the subjects.

He seems to be heading toward the main highway.

Alright, ask the US attorney for warrants

on Taggot, Lozano and Fey Keene.

The bureau traced the couple's station wagon

through California DMV.

It's registered to a James Lee Gregson.

[instrumental music]

[water splashing]

[music continues]

[water splashing]

[music continues]

[instrumental music]

[sighs]

Give me a hand with this thing.

[music continues]

I tried to warn you, but you wouldn't listen.

Nobody got hurt, did they?

What's the big problem?

Don't you understand we could've drowned out there?

So? We took a chance.

That's what it's all about, isn't it?

'What's the matter, Gregson? Don't you ever take a chance?'

Of course, every day in business.

'I just can't risk everything.'

A man's gotta protect what he has.

Maybe.

But maybe he looses what he's got..

'...because he's so busy protectin' it.'

The raft looks alright.

We'll dry off for a while and then get started.

No! I'm not going back on that river!

You'll go.

It's the only way out now.

I'm warnin' ya.

Make your move, Taggot. Now.

Or forget it.

Lozano, please, don't make me go back on that raft.

[scoffs]

[laughs]

What's the matter? What's so funny?

I don't see anything funny about this situation.

I know your type.

College boy, rich father.

I saw your kind at the Correctional Board

when I was a kid.

No, no, don't spring 'em yet.

Throw 'em back into the can for another year or two.

Come on, rich boy, let's fix it up.

- Please. - Alright, Taggot.

You scared him.

Now, sit down.

[instrumental music]

Thanks for helping me in the water.

Yeah.

You don't, uh..

You don't seem like your partner. I..

I feel I can talk to you.

Talk?

About what?

About letting us go when this is over with.

Look, we have two small children

and my husband and I love them very much.

But not each other, huh?

I didn't know it was that apparent.

Yeah.

My wife and I split up.

It's about eight years ago.

[inhales sharply] I guess once you've been through it

it's not too hard to spot.

Well..

Then you can understand we'd like another chance.

Nobody gets a second chance, lady.

You're wrong.

I'm a lot like my partner.

I'm fighting for my life.

And nothing and no one is getting in my way.

Is that clear?

Yes.

And I feel very sorry for you.

[instrumental music]

Road.

[helicopter whirring]

[dramatic music]

Go away!

Go away!

[helicopter whirring]

How..

How did you find me?

[instrumental music]

[instrumental music]

[water splashing]

[music continues]

[aircraft droning]

Are you sure no one was with them?

Positive.

Seemed like they wanted to be alone.

None of my affair, but I'd say

they were using this trip to, uh

work out some family problems.

Like I told Mr. Colby here

they must've had visitors after I left.

- I didn't see anyone. - Where's the raft now?

The last report, it was, uh

just nearing Lonebark Canyon.

[helicopter whirring]

Thanks, Mr. Johnson.

[water gushing]

[sighs]

You better eat something.

- You better check the map. - Why?

I asked you why.

We'll be approaching the Widow-maker

in a couple of hours.

What's that?

It's a waterfall.

It's suicide to go over that.

- You hear that, Taggot? - Yeah.

- Believe him? - I don't know.

No.

No, I don't think he is telling the truth.

I'm telling the truth. I know it's there.

We'll have to beach the raft

about a mile above the falls and drag it around.

You're good.

Our Mr. Gregson's real clever.

Sure, drag the raft a mile.

Maybe run into some law on the way.

We stay on the water.

I'm tellin' you the truth.

'Hello.'

Hello!

- Take it easy. - You folks alright?

Sure thing. Why, uh..

Just testin' the river with our raft.

I don't see many rafts down this far.

Oh..

In fact, I don't see anybody.

I guess we're just braver than most.

You camped around here?

No, I was just, uh, passin' through.

Well, uh, good luck.

Same to you.

Taggot?

You think he smelled anything?

If he did, he would get the law.

Go.

[dramatic music]

No!

[instrumental music]

Be still!

[grunts]

Ah!

[instrumental music]

Let me go.

[instrumental music]

- The kid. - Forget it.

He's probably a mile away by now.

[Gregson] 'My eyes, my eyes. I can't see.'

- You okay, Gregson? - I can't see.

You'll live. Come on, let's get going.

You'll have to let him rest. He can't see.

You fix him up and quick, lady!

Or we'll try the raft alone.

I'm sorry.

[instrumental music]

Inspector Erskine to Air-1.

[man on radio] 'Go ahead, inspector.'

We're starting out now. What's the location of the raft?

[man on radio] 'They're beached about 25 miles down the stream'

'from your position.'

Keep me advised with their progress.

And all units prepare to intercept at Wilson Creek.

[instrumental music]

[music continues]

When we get in the raft, you think of some some excuse

and go back for something you forgot.

- What are you planning to do? - Shut up.

Just do what I tell you.

You gonna leave me alone, aren't you?

Catch up with that kid.

- Maybe we can get some help. - They'll k*ll you.

They'll k*ll us both later or we'll drown in the falls.

One of us has gotta get out of this alive.

Jim, I'm sorry about everything.

I love you.

If we're lucky enough to come through this

I'd like to try a second chance.

Me, too.

Hey, next time, you don't have to be so brave.

You don't have to risk your life for me.

Sooner or later, you'll have to take that chance.

I couldn't stand by and let them k*ll an innocent kid.

I'm so scared.

Will you come on? Let's get going?

[instrumental music]

Oh, I forgot my lifejacket.

Hold it!

You get in the raft, lady.

I'll get your life preserver.

[instrumental music]

[intense music]

[music continues]

Yeah, these were the men.

[Tom] 'Hmm.'

I became suspicious when I first talked to 'em

but I acted as though they were just tourists.

Did it seem to you that, uh

they were about to abandon the raft at that point?

No, they were talking as if they were gonna continue.

But, well, I'm sure they'll beach it again

before they reach the Widow-maker.

[intense music]

[music continues]

[man on radio] 'Air-1 to Inspector Erskine.'

Inspector Erskine. Go ahead.

[man on radio] 'The raft is being launched again about ten miles'

'from you present position.'

'If it continues on course'

'it'll head straight into the Widow-maker falls.'

[man on radio] 'Ten-four.'

[instrumental music]

This is Inspector Erskine to all units at Wilson Creek.

[man on radio] 'Go ahead, inspector.'

You heard the last transmission.

[man on radio] 'Yes, sir, loud and clear.'

Move up river and stand by

to put interception plan into effect.

[man on radio] 'Roger.'

Let me know when you're in position.

[man on radio] 'Ten-four.'

"Raft now approaching Lights in Canyon Pass

"Where we have personnel standing by

"to make arrest if raft beaches to avoid waterfall .

Will continue surveillance and keep bureau advised."

You know that area, don't you, Al?

I sure do. I was raised right near there.

Yeah, Lights in Canyon Pass.

Party gets rough after that.

Chances are, they may not even make the Widow-maker.

[dramatic music]

[dramatic music]

[music continues]

[music continues]

[music continues]

[music continues]

[music continues]

[music continues]

Stop this thing!

No! Sit down!

Sit down, Taggot. Sit down!

[intense music]

[helicopter whirring]

[music continues]

- Alright, beach it! - I can't!

You wanna k*ll us all? Do what I tell you.

Talk to him! Make him do something!

What's the matter? You lost your nerve?

- Alright, lady. He's had it. - No, stop!

Don't! Stop this!

Sit down! No!

Help!

[intense music]

[helicopter droning]

[intense music]

Air-1. Go ahead.

[music continues]

[music continues]

[instrumental music]

We're ready to take you back now.

Okay.

How do you think we did?

I think we did very well.

And we're gonna make it.

Who knows? We might even get lucky.

[male narrator] Albert Lozano, Clifton Taggot, Fay Keene and Carl Hewitt

were found guilty in federal court

of interstate transportation

of stolen property and conspiracy.

Hewitt was also convicted of assaulting federal officers.

[instrumental music]
