08x13 - The Jug Marker

Post by bunniefuu »

[instrumental music]

Murzie's nuts. He thinks everybody's out to get him.

I'm not putting out any news here.

Now, we all know we're working for a psycho.

It's just that nobody's had the nerve to quit.

Couple of guys once did.

Even hid out real good.

Murzie found them.

He dies.

- Is that agreed? - When?

When I'm ready.

Inspector, I told you I never saw him before.

Then what was he doing in your office this morning?

You'd better tell me about it.

He wanted information

'about a diamond shipment arriving here.'

- When? - Tonight.

Face it, will you, Murzie?

You're not the thinker.

That's not your realm.

Without me you wouldn't know

what to do or where to go.

I wanna k*ll you so bad.

Yeah. I know.

Freeze! Drop the g*n.

Put your hands against the wall. Move!

Spread those legs.

[music continues]

[shutter opening]

k*ll the radio.

You two, pick up the money, put it in the van.

Come on, inside, move.

- Tabor? - 'Yeah, go ahead.'

- How is it? - Looks good.

- Are you alright? - Yeah, sure.

Fourth and Columbia are both clear.

There's not a police cruiser in sight. How's the money?

[man on radio] 'Looks like about half a million.'

[Tabor on radio] 'Did you have any trouble with the guards?'

[man on radio] 'They're alright. Stand by. We're coming out.'

[siren wailing]

[sighs]

[engine revving]

[tires screeching]

[tires screeching]

You've been lushing it, haven't you, Tabor?

Yeah, sure.

I told you to lay off that stuff on this job.

Murzie, that's enough!

[dramatic music]

- Keep going. - We can't just leave him there.

Can't we?

[siren wailing]

[Marvin Miller] On July 3rd, the Crescent City National Bank of New Orleans

was robbed of receipts

totaling nearly $1,50,000.

Since the subjects resembled a g*ng

which had been terrorizing a number of states

with large scale hold-ups

agents of the FBI intensified their investigation

to locate them.

New Orleans, Atlanta..

...and Jacksonville.

One day a bank, the next time a racetrack.

They seem to know where the money is

and just when to hit.

Sounds as if they had an advance man.

Witnesses in at least three other robberies

have identified a man using different identities.

Apparently, to gain information.

Well, if the same man is laying out all these jobs

he's gotta be one of the best.

[intercom buzzing]

Ward.

Alright, put him on.

Yes, Tim?

Mm-hmm.

I'll get back to you.

Now, the subject captured near the scene of the robbery

has regained consciousness.

'The police have interviewed him.'

Anything?

He gave his name as Hank Tabor

but no other information.

I'll check in with the Identification Division

and Bureau Files.

I'd like to talk to him, Arthur.

I'll let New Orleans know you're on the way.

[instrumental music]

[grunting]

[grunting]

[groaning]

Alright, that's it for today.

'Practice. See you on Thursday.'

[sighs]

How did you get in?

Through the back door.

'I wouldn't wanna interrupt anyone'

who seemed to be having as good a time as you were.

Peppermint? Bavarian imports.

Those things will make you look like a fish's belly.

I despise you, too, Murzie.

Unfortunately, we need each other.

Now, I planned this job rather carefully.

Who told you to go to, uh..

walkie-talkies?

I didn't think about them being monitored.

Mm-hmm. And all the fireworks?

Nobody got hurt.

What about Tabor?

Why were you picking on him?

He had bad breath.

Well, now he still has bad breath..

...but the cops have him now.

He won't talk. He's afraid of me.

You like to have people afraid of you, don't you, Murzie?

It's the best form of control.

Tabor had some friends in the group.

Won't that cause dissension?

Nothing I can't handle.

What's the next job?

[laughs]

You are a continuous source of amazement to me, Murzie.

[laughs]

Hey, you've just finished cutting up $1,50,000.

It's not the money.

It's the action.

I know.

That's the trouble with my job.

Dealing with psychopaths like you.

I should k*ll you for that.

But you won't.

Alright, I need you now.

Maybe some day I won't.

That coin has two sides.

It'll be interesting to see which one of us walks out first.

Alright, now..

This is a secondary road leading into Mobile.

There'll be a truck full of industrial diamonds

on its way to the city, worth about, uh, $1,00,000.

A road job? When?

Soon.

I'll let you know.

[clears throat]

[dramatic music]

[instrumental music]

[Erskine] 'Who are they, Tabor?'

Why don't you wanna tell me?

Because I'm no informer.

Now, look, you told me my rights.

So you're gonna protect the man that did this to you?

- No, but-- - 'Alright.'

Who's behind the robberies?

- Who plans them? - The Jug-Marker.

- Who's that? - I don't know.

I don't know anything at all.

You just forget what I told ya.

Okay. Thank you.

Uh, Tabor has an arrest record for armed robbery.

We're checking on his known associates.

He spent quite a bit of time in Memphis

during the six last six months.

The office there is concentrating on it.

This business card was found in the lining of his jacket.

"Public Relations. Patterson, New Jersey."

Elias Devon.

[instrumental music]

[engine revving]

[music continues]

Terry?

[laughs]

Oh, darling.

[chuckles] Hm..

How are you, Terry?

I'm getting well by the carload.

[chuckles] That's the way the new psychiatrist calls it.

Have you spoken to him?

Yes. Mm-hmm.

I won't be going home?

- I'm not well enough yet? - No, no, not yet.

I guess I had hoped that this time I..

[laughs]

You know, I just keep thinking

about being with you and Jimmy.

Is he alright? Have you seen him?

Jimmy? Oh, he's fine.

The headmaster tells me we have a, um..

a genius on our hands.

Like you, Elias?

You could never stop.

Could you, Elias?

Until they had to bring me here.

Oh.

I'm sorry. I, I didn't mean that. I..

No, no, go ahead. Finish what you were going to say.

I forced you into a life you hate.

I badgered you

about your lack of sophistication

to enhance my career.

This is not the way it should have ended.

But don't you see? It hasn't ended.

I am getting well, for you.

We will be together again.

But it, it didn't have to happen at all.

If only you'd had a little bit more strength.

[sobbing] You're not really sorry at all, are you?

These visits

these gifts you send me

they're just a way of salving your conscience.

Terry.

[sobbing]

Forgive me.

[sobbing]

This dream I have of our being together

please, don't take it away from me.

It's the only thing

that stands between me and the blackness.

Please.

Don't open up the void again.

- Terry. Terry. - Please.

It's going to be alright now, hm?

[sobbing] Wait.

Please, couldn't you stay just..

...a little bit longer?

[dramatic music]

Take it easy. The truck could be another couple of hours.

What's the matter, Bibbs?

[scoffs]

I was just thinking about Tabor.

[instrumental music]

[Colby] 'You don't have to say anything.'

And anything you do say can be used against you.

And you have the right to a lawyer.

How may I help you?

Do you know a man by the name of Elias Devon?

Has he done something?

We think he planned the robbery.

Does that mean you suspect I'm involved?

You gave him information about the armored car delivery

didn't you?

Who, me? I'm in the Escrow Department.

We know that just before the robbery

you were asking a lot of questions around the office

that had nothing at all to do with your department.

I think I'd better speak to a lawyer.

Go right ahead.

I must've been such an easy victim for him.

He said no one would suspect me.

And after 20 years' experience in the bank

I could get information he wanted.

Where'd you meet him?

At a flower show in Baton Rouge.

He seemed to know what I was all about.

A girl who's missed connections

'and was beginning to count the lines on her face.'

- What was his offer? - A full share.

[sighs] A full share.

And I believed it..

...'cause I wanted to.

Where's he now?

I don't know.

Ms. Harnolds, you're going to have to come with us.

Inspector..

We just heard from the resident agent in Patterson, New Jersey.

Agents looked into Devon, Public Relations.

- It's a phony. - That's hardly surprising.

His receptionist overheard Devon on the phone

talking to a Lavery Incorporated, Mobile

about a large shipment of industrial diamonds.

Well, call the Mobile office.

Have them see if Lavery confirms the shipment.

Okay.

[revving]

[dramatic music]

[tires screeching]

Murzie, look out!

Murzie!

Let's get out of here.

[engine starts]

[tires screeching]

[revving]

[revving]

[instrumental music]

The shipment is missing.

The driver said the g*ng switched the diamonds

to another truck they had planted here.

'They couldn't give a description of the vehicle'

because they were blindfolded

but they could hear the transfer.

And what about the g*ng members?

They were disguised

but their general descriptions tie in with the group

we've been looking for.

We're processing the truck for latents.

[man on radio] 'Control to Unit One.'

[sighs]

This is One. Go ahead.

Uh, Lewis, I received a report from Mobile

on the truck hijacking.

Did you uncover anything further?

Well, we just got here, Arthur, but it looks the same people

who held up the Crescent City National Bank.

Uh, we have more background information on Devon.

No arrest record, but he came close to becoming involved

in a security swindle just after leaving college.

He always used a public-relations title

as a cover for several get-rich-quick enterprises.

His wife suffered a nervous breakdown.

'Friends close to Devon said he felt very guilty about it.'

[engine revving]

- 'NK Four to One.' - One. Go ahead.

Uh, subject, uh, matching description of Devon

now leaving building, walking north on Jacunda.

Carrying an attache case

and what looks like a number of file folders.

Turning in the corner, heading east on, uh, Hayber.

Now entering a, uh, black over green Monterey

New Jersey license plate LSX-645.

No one else in the car.

Pulling away now. Continuing east on Hayber.

Thank you, Four. We'll take over from here.

[instrumental music]

[engine revving]

Yes, Dan?

Mr. Ward, Devon purchased a ticket to Baltimore

making connections to Atlanta.

Inspector Erskine boarded the plane with Agent Colby.

Alright, we'll call Baltimore.

So far he's our best link to the others.

Sooner or later he's going to make contact.

Thank you, Dan.

[instrumental music]

I almost got my head blown off.

[thuds]

That plan was a trap.

- The Jug-Marker sold us out. - Why would he do that?

Why do you think? To get us off his back.

That just doesn't make any sense, man.

He's got it made, he keeps his hands clean

he stays out of danger and he gets rich.

'He's not gonna blow a sweet setup like that.'

Yeah, real sweet.

He wants to keep it that way with his own operation.

If he wanted to get rid of us, he'd have picked the better way.

You backing him?

'Huh?'

All of you've got your heads together with him?

You figuring to drop me?

Go ahead, try it on.

Ah, there, easy.

We just got off a job.

'Our nerves are in knots.'

Maybe you're right.

But all of you better know that what I said still goes.

[exhales sharply]

So?

So we k*ll him, before he gets all of us.

Nah. His beef is with The Jug-Marker.

And he's got good reason.

'The Marker is too smart.'

Yeah, and a few days ago his beef was with Tabor.

You trying to tell me Tabor was some kind of a threat?

Come on, man, he was terrific. He's one of the best we've had.

Murzie didn't seem to think so. What do you make of that?

The same thing you do.

Murzie's nuts. He thinks everybody's out to get him.

I'm not putting out any news here.

Now, we all know we're working for a psycho.

It's just that nobody's had the nerve to quit.

Couple of guys once did.

Even hid out real good.

Murzie found them.

He dies.

Is that agreed?

When?

When I'm ready.

[engine revving]

[laughs] Guess the drinks are on me.

Certainly a surprise. I didn't think I'd see you again.

Well, we had such a nice time at that invitational tournament

I thought I'd look you up again.

Besides..

...maybe we can, uh..

...do some business.

Oh, you're interested in diamonds?

Indeed, I am.

As a matter of fact, I'd like to know, among other things

a great deal more about this company.

Value and displacement of inventory, for instance.

'Any news you may have of impending shipments.'

- 'Things like that.' - Are you serious?

Yes, and I'm afraid I don't have much time.

You're planning a robbery.

- Now you've got it. - I'm dumbfounded.

What makes you think I'd co-operate

with anything like this?

These photo stats of your IOUs.

The originals are still in the hands of the owners.

These gentlemen are quite impatient.

I understand they've given you another week.

But can you really raise $30,000 in that time?

You introduced me to them, and set up the game.

That's right.

And if I can make this a big enough operation

why, you'll have plenty of money to pay off these hoodlums.

And still..

...a sizable little bonus for yourself.

I-I've never done anything like this in my life.

Ah, well, we all have to begin someplace.

I-I-I wouldn't know anything about what you want.

Good, then you won't be under suspicion

and you can find out exactly what I want to know, subtly.

Now, shall we get down to business?

Let me outline a few of the things I'll need to know.

Uh.. Oh.

Peppermint?

'Bavarian import.'

'Alright.'

[dramatic music]

[instrumental music]

Jimmy.

[chuckles]

Hello, son.

[chuckles] I get it.

You're too old for hugging now, aren't you? Alright.

Put it there, Jim. How are you?

Okay.

How are they treating you? Alright?

You pay 'em enough. They should.

Yeah. Here, sit down.

Ah. Here, I want you to open this one first.

This is important.

Here, I'll give you a hand.

How about that, huh?

Notice the, uh..

[clears throat] ...the autograph on the strap.

[sighs] Thank you.

I've got a lot of homework to do. May I go now?

No, you may not go now.

And what's bothering you?

I've driven all these miles up here to see you--

And you spend half an hour and then you leave.

Why can't I go with you?

Son, I, I'm a busy man. I travel all the time.

And you're only fourteen.

Well, then hire private teachers.

I'll help you pay for 'em.

I haven't spent any of the money you've sent me.

Jimmy, it isn't that. It's--

Just give me a year with you. I'll make it up.

Dad, you aren't ashamed of me, are you?

Here. I think I better run along.

[exhales sharply]

Please?

Now, Jimmy, I don't like a whiner.

[clatter]

[sighs]

[car engine starts]

[engine revving]

[instrumental music]

Inspector, I told you, I never saw him before.

Then what was he doing in your office this morning?

You better tell me about it.

H-he wanted information

'about a diamond shipment arriving here.'

When?

Tonight.

[intense music]

[engine revving]

[music continues]

I thought we weren't gonna use

anymore of The Jug-Marker's plans.

We'll see what he has to say.

Then we'll know what to do, right?

What's the matter with you, Vic?

'You've been uptight about something all day.'

You've even got sweat on your nose.

Ah, you know how your, your nerves get just before a job.

Sure.

[intense music]

[music continues]

[engine revving]

Wait for me in that drugstore.

I'll be back in about an hour.

I'll drive, I know the city.

[g*nsh*t]

[dramatic music]

[g*nsh*t]

Vic!

Let's get out of here.

[man on radio] 'Control to 18-25.'

This is 25. Go ahead.

'The police report a sh**ting at 6th and Main.'

'A few blocks from your position.'

'The victim was one of a group of men who abandoned him.'

'He's in serious condition, and asking to talk to the FBI.'

This is Inspector Erskine.

The volume is on the special.

I'm en route to the location. Maintain your positions.

[Colby] 'You have the right to remain silent.'

'Anything you say can be used against you.'

You have the right to a lawyer. Do you understand?

Yeah. I better tell you now, man.

I'm never gonna make it to the hospital.

You realize that not one of those clowns tried to help me?

- You're ready for that? - Who are they?

The head honcho is a nutcase named Murzie.

Art Murzie.

And there's Leonard Cooney, and San Andriola

'and Victor Stark.'

What about the advance man?

You mean The Jug-Marker?

I don't know. I've never seen him.

Murzie does though. He needs him, he..

He uses him.

- Where can we find him? - I don't know.

They'll find each other, though. You can be sure of that.

See, the old..

The old Jug-Marker

draws up such pretty plans.

[dramatic music]

[Ward] Good work. Thank you very much.

Bibbs has recovered sufficiently

to give us a signed statement.

Tom, call New Orleans and Mobile.

Have them contact the US attorney

about authorizing warrants.

Yes, sir.

Arthur, Memphis just called

in response to the flyers we sent out.

An informant there thinks he spotted Stark and Andriola.

Nothing yet on Murzie.

[Ward] Murzie.

First arrest at 18 for attempted m*rder.

Served time in prisons and a mental institution.

Escaped eight months ago.

'Described as paranoid, armed and dangerous.'

Where does surveillance put Devon now?

Well, he arrived in Miami this morning at 9:10.

He went to the North Beach Marina

where he boarded a cabin cruiser named The Thresher.

It was registered under the name Ellis Martin.

'He left early this afternoon'

'for the Eighth County country club'

where he became very friendly with the operations manager

of the Miami Security Savings Bank.

- 'Ted Wilks.' - Has he been interviewed?

Yes, Devon talked to Wilks about opening an account

at Miami Security's main branch.

Undoubtedly, to establish a source of information.

It's apparent why Devon chose Miami Security.

They're planning to close two of their branches

move their assets to the main office.

That'll involve the transfer of substantial amounts of cash.

Only, no date has been set yet.

'That's undoubtedly what Devon wants to know.'

Maybe we can help him.

[dramatic music]

[instrumental music]

[telephone ringing]

- Hauser? - Yes?

Edward Sterns, Consolidated Fixtures.

Oh, yes. Uh, Mr. Wilks filled me in.

You're, uh, opening a new plant.

Yes. Can you handle our account?

Uh, I understand from Mr. Wilks

you carry a sizable weekly payroll.

- It'll take some time. - Why?

It would involve the transferring

of sufficient funds.

Can you meet my payroll by Friday or do I go elsewhere?

- I think it can be arranged. - Good.

I'll notify my controller.

[dramatic music]

[dramatic music]

[crickets chirping]

Do a good job, doc, and I'll even pay ya.

[groans]

That's the best I can do under these circumstances.

My, uh, friend will take you back to the city.

[crickets chirping]

[engine starts]

This way, doctor.

[music continues]

[groans]

[g*nshots]

[music continues]

[engine starts]

[leaves rustling]

[leaves rustling]

[instrumental music]

[seagulls squawking]

After I finished, they talked freely.

It was then I knew they were going to k*ll me.

Is this the man you treated?

Yes. He had a b*llet wound in his side.

Excuse me.

US attorney authorized Devon's arrest

for the attempt to robbery.

Inspector, this man, Murzie

he said he couldn't wait for some money to be moved

because his wound was too bad.

He said they were gonna commit a robbery today.

Did he mention any details?

No.

[dramatic music]

Police officers. That's far enough.

[intense music]

[tires screeching]

Drop them.

[instrumental music]

[engine revving]

- MM boat one. - Go ahead.

We have a man answering to the description of Arthur Murzie

under surveillance here at the marina.

He's heading toward Devon's boat right now.

Maintain surveillance. We'll join you there.

Going someplace?

[chuckles]

I thought we weren't going to, uh, meet again.

It's the last time.

I think the job went sour.

I haven't heard from any of my men.

Oh?

Well, maybe they, uh..

...maybe they ran out on ya.

Unh-unh.

The cops got 'em.

Your plan didn't work, did it?

They didn't get me.

Go on, tell me you didn't pull a double cross.

How could I?

You weren't supposed to hit the bank

until tomorrow, remember?

They must have staked out that bank the minute I hit town.

You tipped them.

Now beg.

Tell me you didn't set me up.

Alright. I didn't set you up.

Beg.

You're not gonna hurt me, Murzie.

You can't fight something you don't understand.

And you don't understand why I'm not afraid.

Without fear you can't act.

Besides, you're alone. Everybody's gone.

Stark, Andriola..

'Tabor, Bibbs, Cooney.'

The FBI can spend all their time

just looking for you.

And that doesn't give you too many alternatives.

Maybe you can find some rat hole to rot in

or maybe, just maybe, you can let me help you.

Quit talking, Devon.

Face it, will you, Murzie?

You're not the thinker.

That's not your realm.

Without me you wouldn't know what to do or where to go.

I wanna k*ll you so bad.

Yeah. I know.

Did anybody follow you here?

No.

Can you move this thing?

I think we better find a faster route.

[dramatic music]

This is One. Go ahead.

Murzie and Devon are leaving the boat now, inspector.

Right. We're just pulling into the marina.

[engine revving]

[tires screeching]

[tires screeching]

[tires screeching]

FBI.

[g*nsh*t]

[g*nsh*t]

[g*nshots]

[g*nshots]

Wait! Wait, I-I give up!

Look, here's my g*n!

Don't, don't sh**t!

Alright, put your hands behind your head.

Turn around.

Now back up.

[music continues]

Drop it.

Give me the keys to your car.

[grunting]

[grunting]

[grunting]

[groaning]

[groaning]

[groaning]

[groaning]

[music continues]

[instrumental music]

Are these really necessary? I-I'm not a violent person.

[Marvin Miller] Elias Devon, Arthur Murzie

along with their associates, Martin Bibb, Victor Stark

Henry Tabor, Leonard Cooney and Dorothy Harnolds

were convicted in federal court of bank robbery.

Devon, Murzie, Stark, Bibbs and San Andriola

were also convicted of theft from interstate shipment.

Devon and Murzie were found guilty

of assaulting federal officers.

Murzie was convicted in State Court

of attempted m*rder.

[instrumental music]

[theme music]

[music continues]
