[male narrator] On the afternoon of August 9th

James Thomas Finley, a driver employed

by the Mid-Eastern Trucking Lines

was found in critical condition

a short distance off a New Jersey Highway.

His truck, loaded with $125,000 worth of whisky

had been hijacked.

Early the following morning

the empty truck was found abandoned in Pennsylvania.

Since merchandise traveling in interstate commerce was stolen

the FBI entered the case under provisions

of the "Theft from interstate shipment" statute.

Are you the man who saw the truck drive off?

Yeah, yeah, I saw it.

Would you wait here a moment, please?

Inspector, I interviewed that truck driver this morning.

Doctor said he's doing fine.

He, uh, he said a hitchhiker pulled a g*n on him

in front of this diner and forced him to drive

to a spot where some other men were waiting.

Could he describe any of them?

Well, he did the best he could on the hitchhiker.

Said he was wearing non-descript clothes

long hair, dark glasses, uh..

He guessed the man to be around 30.

The busboy saw him, too.

Well, let's talk to him.

Mr. Sanderson, this is Inspector Erskine

and Special Agent Colby.

- Hi. - How do you do?

I understand you saw the hitchhiker, Mr. Sanderson.

Yeah, yeah, he, uh, he was sittin' right over there.

I was surprised that this truck driver gave him a lift.

What sort of a man was he?

One of these hippie guys. They all look alike.

Do you remember the color of his hair

or anything about his clothes?

Yeah, he had a lot of hair, dark color.

And I think he was wearing some kind of..

Kind of jeans.

What else do you remember about him?

Nothing much.

He-he was carryin' a sign, like a lot of 'em do.

One of those highway destination signs?

Hah. I guess so. I didn't read it.

He dropped it when he got in the truck.

I picked it up and threw it away.

The heat's on the hijack and you know that.

Nearly k*lling that driver didn't help.

Well, the next job will go smooth as silk.

based on the laboratory examination

and the truck driver's identification.

'An informant reported seeing Prentiss there this morning.'

in federal court of theft from interstate shipment.

Anthony Hendricks pled guilty to bank robbery.

Prentiss, White, and Willmar, were also convicted

of assaulting federal officers.

Through testimony supplied by Prentiss

Jules Harmon and members of his organization were tried

in federal court on hijacking conspiracy charges

and were sentenced to terms in federal penitentiaries.

Hendricks, Prentiss, and their confederates

were convicted of armed robbery in state court.

Vince Hanley was charged with receiving stolen goods.
