[helicopter whirring]
Me?
You think I have something to do with that?
You think I'll be sacking out in this crummy joint?
I'll be in my yacht some place.
Like the Riviera.
Our records show you were separated
from the National Guard two years ago.
For the good of the service.
Crummy outfit. Bunch of jerks.
The armory was broken into the night before last.
A case of hand grenades
and a box of plastic expl*sives were stolen.
Your record shows you are familiar with the use of both.
Hey, man, this is Ernie Cahn you are speaking to.
Yeah, Ernie Cahn!
I wouldn't dirty my hands by going near that
boy scout headquarters.
Why don't you two just bug off?
I'm behind on my shut-eye.
Yeah, now, look, there's nothing to worry about.
I never worry about anything, Sidney.
I pay people to handle things so I don't have to worry.
She was right about one thing. Ernie Cahn has gotta go.
She was right about two things.
She said you'd never have to worry about her again.
Ever.
You heard her say that, didn't you?

During the late hours of June 17th
the Michigan National Guard armory at Detroit
was broken into
and a quantity of expl*sives was reported stolen.
Only hours later, while investigating the armory theft
the FBI was notified that an armored truck
had been robbed in nearby Washtenaw County.
The FBI launched an immediate investigation
of the armored car as*ault under the bank robbery statue
when it appeared that the two crimes only a few hours apart
were connected.
[Lewis] Inspector Erskine, Special Agent Daniels.
Sergeant Gorm, state police.
- How are the guards? - Both serious.
One of them got out with grenade fragments.
- Hm. - Excuse me.
Were they able to tell you anything?
The driver. Elmo Sykes, 46.
Stayed conscious just long enough to say
that they were four of them
wearing stocking mask.
No other description.
What did they get?
Oh, I just got on the radio.
A box.
Seven hundred thousand negotiable securities.
On its way from a bank in Saline to a bank in Ann Arbor.
Looks like they've used high expl*sives
to blast these doors open. Probably plastics.
Grenade fragments are all over the place.
Oh, and they dropped one.
I've got it in the car.
We'll have some agents help you go over the terrain.
Appreciate it, inspector.
At least we know, whoever did this
not only knew where to get high expl*sives
but how to use 'em.
And they knew exactly what this truck would be carrying
and when it would be here.
[instrumental music]
[sighing]
[music continues]
[music continues]
[phone ringing]
- Yeah. - Sid! Ernie Cahn.
What are you using for brains? I told you not to call me.
[Ernie on phone] 'Everything's cool, man!'
'I just wanted to let you know'
'I counted the money and got it delivered'
'and it's all there.'
Well, I'm pleased to learn you can trust us.
Now, you just lay back
and leave off the phone. Okay?
Uh, Sid, I just wanted to let you know
anything big in the wind?
I'm ready to go.
Well, I'm glad we can count on you.
Right. You name it, Sid. Ernie Cahn's you boy.
See you around.
[chuckles]
[instrumental music]
[clearing throat]
[music continues]
Remember, inspector
the doctor said five minutes at the most. Okay?
Mr. Sykes.
Can you hear me?
We're from the FBI.
Can you tell us anything about the men
who attacked your truck?
Men?
Kids.
All playing games.
Came out of nowhere.
Is there anything you can tell us to help us identify 'em?
So fast.
They all had these stockings over their faces.
Did you hear any of them call by name?
All.. All I heard was..
Like the f-front of the truck blew up.
J-Jim.
- Is Jim okay? - He's gonna be alright.
So fast.
I didn't have time to warn him.
Tell me something.
What makes you think they were young?
The way they.. The way they moved!
Fast.
Not stuck with a farmer.
No. Had to be kids.
Well, thanks very much.
We'll be back when you start giving the nurses
a hard time. Okay?
Yeah.
I, I wasn't much help.
- Sorry. - You were great.
Thank you.
Seven hundred thousand dollars in negotiable security
doesn't sound like something stringed up
by some punk kids, does it?
You know my guess is they were hired hands.
See if the bureau has come up with that list.
I wanna cross check with the police
on burglars with a National Guard background.
It's already done, agents are on their way
to see Detroit police with the names, right now.
Good, this character still has a lot of unused grenades
and C4 in their possession.
Let's nail 'em before they decide
to go into business with themselves.
[dramatic music]
Hey!
You gotta be kidding.
When I' kidding, I'll tell you. Come on.
Go on, doll. Get in.
[music continues]
What'd you do? Strike oil.
Oil wells dry up, doll.
The business I'm in never dries up.
What kind of business, Ernie?
You never even held a job.
Job are for diploma freaks, doll.
I wished you'd quit calling me "Doll."
I really don't like it.
Yeah?
Well, get used to it because I like it.
You and me, we are gonna be a thing, we're going places.
[chuckles] In what? A rented car?
Who're you trying to impress?
Yourself, me or the driver?
Sid Alpert.
What?
I've gone into business with Sid Alpert.
[laughing] Excuse me.
Do you like laughing?
Huh? You like laughing?
Laugh.
I, uh, I suppose that Alpert
refers to you as "The Godfather."
[laughing]
Laugh.
Laugh.
'I was there'
You're kidding.
Look, doll, I told you before when I'm kidding I'll tell you.
Come on, stop it. You're hurting me.
I said, don't, Ernie!
Oh, tiger doll, huh?
[grunting]
Look. Do me a favor. Just take me home.
I don't feel like going any place tonight.
All the stores are closed.
Nothing you can rip off.
Just take me home.
Sure, like I always do, huh?
Well, nuts to that.
I'm tired of you hustling a dinner out of me
whenever you've got nothing better else to do.
And I'm tired of goodnight, get lost at the door.
You wanted money?
Hmm?
Well..
...I got money.
Big money. I'm gonna have more.
All you're gonna have is a slab in the morgue.
- Cut it out. - What? You're g*n shy? Huh?
You'll get over that.
I got over that a long time ago.
With you will never.
I wanna have all the chicks I know in my head
real careful like. Ticking them off.
Bing, bing, bing.
And you're it, doll.
You just let that sink in. Do you hear me?
I don't want any faces out of you.
Lots of chicks would like to be sitting where you are
right now but you're the lucky one.
Now if you've got any boyfriends hanging around
you can tell 'em to get lost.
Anybody messing around with Ernie Cahn's girl
could get himself hurt.
Do you hear me?
Hurt real bad.
[dramatic music]
[instrumental music]
Well, keep canvassing the farms in the area
and let me know if you turn up anything.
Alright. Thanks.
That's a complete list of stolen securities.
They're not gonna have any trouble passing any of them.
Get this to the NCIC.
Inspector, Detroit police have come up with three candidates.
They're all burglars, they're all capable of this kind of job
and they all have National Guard experience behind them.
Well, that sounds promising.
Well, it's not that promising.
Um, Norman Hickle is doing a three to ten
at the Southern Michigan Prison.
And William Stor, he's been in a hospital for two weeks
as a result of a motorcycle accident at Royal Oak.
So it leaves us with Ernie Cahn.
- Right. - Thank you.
[knocking on door]
Yeah.
- Who is it? - FBI, Cahn.
We'd like to talk to you.
Give me a second. I ain't got any clothes on.
Come on, Cahn. Open up!
I'm coming, I'm coming.
Give me a second.
[sighing]
Inspector Erskine, Special Agent Daniels.
What do the feds want with me?
You're Ernest Cahn?
Yeah.
Ernie Cahn.
We'd like to talk with you. You have the right to remain silent.
Anything you say can be used against you.
And you have the right to an attorney.
Yeah, Yeah. I know all that jazz.
Who wants a mouth piece?
Ernie Cahn does his own speaking for himself.
Now get to it. I go things to do.
Where were you two nights ago between 8 p.m. and midnight?
Who knows? I don't keep a diary.
[Daniels] 'Come on. Try hard. Think back, huh? Two nights.'
Oh, yeah.
Um, me and some of the guys were up in Pontiac.
Drinking beer, sh**ting pool.
Who were you with?
Umm...Lauren Shram, Art Lawman..
We were at the Sunset Buddies Beer Bar.
We closed the joint.
- Check it. - Yeah.
Oh, wait a minute.
Wait a minute, uh..
...no, we left earlier.
Art knows these chicks up in, uh, Flint.
We drove up to Flint.
Uh, yeah. We kept the party going 2, 3, 4 o'clock. I guess.
What were the names of the girls?
Who cares? Koni somebody..
I don't know, Art Lawman knows 'em. I don't.
Where were you yesterday morning?
Right there.
I mean, I had too much.
Are you sure you weren't slightly west of there
in the Washington R. road?
Hey, come on. You know, my ears are getting tired.
[Lewis] 'An armored truck was blown up and robbed.'
Me?
You think I have something to do with that.
You think I'd be sacking out in this crummy joint?
I'd be in my yacht someplace.
Like the Riviera.
Our records show you were separated
from the National Guard two years ago.
For the good of the service.
Crummy outfit. Bunch of jerks.
No doubt.
The armory was broken into the night before last.
A case of hand grenades
and a box of plastic expl*sives were stolen.
Your record shows you are familiar with the use of both.
Hey, man. This is Ernie Cahn you are speaking to.
Yeah, Ernie Cahn!
I wouldn't dirty my hands by going near that
boy scout headquarters.
Why don't you two just bug off?
I'm behind on my shut-eye.
Check with everyone who knows him.
So the FBI talked to you.
You want me to stand on one foot and clap?
You don't read me, doll, we've gotta get out of the country
till the heat's off.
Sure! Sure.
As soon as I'm done with my sandwich.
You know, you're crazy?
You are absolutely one hundred and one percent crazy.
[gasps]
Hey, your purse.
Relax, will you? You don't understand.
I'm telling you that we have to
leave the country.
'I want you with me!'
'It'll be like a vacation. You'll enjoy it.'
Just stay away from me.
Do me a favor and get out of here.
I'll call the police.
Oh, you do that.
You just do that.
I'll wait right here for them.
And maybe you tell them what happened
to all those electric type-writers
that disappeared when they moved your company's offices.
'Huh?'
They're dying to know, you know!
Now, you look little funny standin' there on one foot.
That's more like it.
Feds will have a hard time finding
what Sunday school you teach in.
You and me.
Yeah!
All the way, baby. Till death do us part.
Do you hear me, huh?
We talked to Cahn yesterday, Arthur.
Chris is running down his alibi.
And an informant tells us he has a girlfriend.
Judith Grinnell.
We're checking her address.
And the lab reports of the grenade you found
and the fragments are definitely army ordinance.
Same ship to National Guard units.
We're interviewing army personnel now.
But I'd still guess it was an outside job
using inside information.
Both men in charge that night are highly respected NCOs
with good records.
Um-hm.
Lewis, it's possible the stolen securities
will be sent out of the country for laundering.
We've alerted all informants.
I'll let you know as soon as something breaks.
Pull!
[g*nsh*t]
Well?
Not bad.
[laughing] Not bad?
The only trouble about being perfect though, Sid
the only place to go is down.
[laughing]
Alright.
Have a shot of perfection.
Mr. Alpert?
Do we know each other?
I know you from your pictures.
I think you're mistaken.
You're up, Mr. W.
Your office said I'd find you here.
My office told you nothing.
Now, this is a private club.
Now, you said your hello.
Now find your way out of here.
If I leave, you're in big trouble.
I came to talk to you about Ernie Cahn.
I don't know any Ernie Cahn.
Well, that's tough because he knows you.
'He told me all about the National Guard job.'
'And about the robbery of the armored truck.'
You can buy yourself a lot of pain
talking that way, lady.
That's just what I'm looking to get rid of.
For me and for you.
And if you hired Ernie Cahn like he said you did
going to business with, then you're not too smart.
'Ernie's crazy. He's flipped out.'
Go on.
He wants me to skip the country with him.
Says, you'll foot the bills.
Look, I don't, I don't wanna walk down the street
with Ernie Cahn but I'm afraid.
He says he'll k*ll me if I don't go with him.
For somebody who's afraid to be k*lled
you picked a rather strange place to come to.
No. No, you don't have to worry about me ever.
It's Ernie who's gonna make trouble for you.
If I were you I wouldn't let him live 10 minutes.
[giggles]
She's got a good head on her shoulders.
Umm...I'm sorry I snapped at you a minute ago.
Eh, listen, I wanna thank you.
I mean for driving all the way out here.
That's very thoughtful.
Now, you just leave everything to me. Okay?
You go home and you just relax.
And I want you to remember Sid Alpert
never forgets a favor.
Not ever.
Do us both a favor.
Get rid of him.
I thought you told me you checked Cahn out.
I didn't check his psychiatrist out.
Well, maybe I oughta check yours out.
Hey, now, look, there's nothing to worry about.
I never worry about anything, Sidney.
I pay people to handle things
so I don't have to worry.
Well, she was right about one thing
Ernie Cahn has gotta go.
She was right about two things.
She said you'd never have to worry about her again.
Ever.
You heard her say that, didn't you?
[dramatic music]
Yes, sir. I heard.
Pull!
[g*nsh*t]
[instrumental music]
- Do you smell that? - You smell that?
It's gas.
[intense music]
Ms. Grinnell.
Ms. Grinnell.
[glass shattering]
Operator, this is an emergency.
[siren wailing]
[gasps]
Take it easy.
No. Stay away from me.
We're gonna have a doctor look at you.
No. No, they'll find me!
Who'll find you?
Who are you?
My name's Erskine. I'm with the FBI.
Please.
Please, just help me get out of here.
What can you tell me about Ernie Cahn?
[siren wailing]
Somebody tried to k*ll you.
Tell me who it was.
[sobbing]
It was two men.
Oh, I don't.. I don't know who they were.
It all happened so fast. I never saw their faces.
I hope you get them.
I hope you get both of them.
[instrumental music]
Here, pop.
Take it.
I may not be around for a while, so take it, huh.
You're going away?
Or you're running away?
I'll be back.
Bigger than ever, pop.
As soon as things cool off a little.
Things will never cool off for you, Ernie.
Not the way you operate.
Hey, don't knock it, pop.
Someday Little Ernie is going to be Big Ernie, you'll see.
Big Ernie is a name for a hoodlum.
I don't want to know any hoodlums.
Hey, come on. Will you?
I suppose you'll be happy to see me leaning over some hot mangle
pressing somebody else's pants the rest of my life.
Do me a favor.
Put this back in your pocket.
It's dirty.
I don't want you should feel any cleaner
by giving any of it to me.
What do they feed you in this crummy joint?
What are they feeding you out there?
Don't..
Don't come to see me anymore.
You would do that?
I got a little scraps of pride left.
But every time you come
you steal some away.
Let me read about Big Ernie Cahn in the newspapers.
That way I can pretend it's somebody else.
[phone ringing]
- Hello. - 'Sir, it's Ernie Cahn.'
Ernie..
Where have you been?
I've been trying to get a hold of you.
Uh, that's why I called, I'm moving around.
Well, that's a smart idea.
Now, listen, Sid, I'm gonna need a round trip ticket
out of the country and a couple of bucks to go along with it.
Those five bills you gave me didn't go very far, you know.
Well, I can see great minds run in the same channels..
[laughing] ...Ernie.
You know, you called at just the right time.
We've got a very important business matter
we'd like you to help us out.
Oh, yeah?
Well, look, Sid, I just want you to know
I ain't gonna knock over any more elephants
for the bag of peanuts.
I'm not like my stupid friends who'll sell it
for a couple of bucks and headed for, uh, New Mexico.
[chuckles] I was right.
I told Mr. Wilcox you wouldn't do it unless
you got a percentage and I got a percentage for you, hmm.
Now, listen, I'll tell you where I want you to meet me.
Yeah.
I'll come out in the sticks.
Oh.
Sure, okay.
Um, I'll let you know if I like the setup when you lay it up.
Chao, baby.
[dramatic music]
[music continues]
[music continues]
[g*nshots]
[music continues]
[g*nsh*t]
[g*nshots]
[g*nshots]
[music continues]
[gasping]
Who sent you, huh?
Did Alpert or Wilcox order my hit?
You're a dead man.
Wilcox will never leave you alive.
One more day, you're dead.
You're wrong, crum.
It's Alpert and Wilcox who won't be alive tomorrow.
[gasping]
[dramatic music]
Dying in the country is healthier.
[engine revving]
We already know you work for Wilcox and Alpert.
I'm unemployed.
Our information is you were hired to get rid of Ernie Cahn.
I don't know any Ernie Cahn.
I told you, I picked up this hitchhiker.
He shot me and took my car.
You had nearly a thousand dollars on you.
And that's not unemployment.
How come the guy who took your car didn't take your money?
Who knows? Look, you got no right.
Can't you see I'm in bad shape? What's with you people?
Who shot you?
I picked up this hitchhiker. He shot me and took my car.
Inspector, listen, Ernie Cahn's alibi checks out
all the way up to the chicks and the flat.
They, uh, they covered for him at first
but when they began to realize what it was all about
they changed their minds.
They were not with Cahn and company the night
the armory was burglarized.
What about Sid Alpert, any word on his movements yet?
Well, only that Sid Alpert doesn't make any moves
without checking with Ted Wilcox first.
[phone ringing]
Hold on.
Listen, I got, I gotta answer the phone, you..
...brush your ...brush your hair.
Go on.
Um-hm.
Hello, oh, Mr. W, I was just about to call you.
You should've done that, Sid.
I don't like to hear about foul-ups second hand.
The whole street knows by now about the girl and Cahn.
Oh, I-I've already taken care of that. It won't happen again.
And you're sorry. I don't want any more excuses, Sid.
I want you out of the country tonight.
And if you're still around by morning, I assure you
that your elimination will be handled promptly
and without any foul-ups.
Listen, Mr. W, let's, let's be reasonable.
Ernie.. Hey, what's going on?
You set me up.
Look, I-I drove my car out there
I saw the other car, see..
They're only gonna need a small box for you.
You really think I tried to cross you.
No, I think you love me, Sidney.
Alright...I'll tell you what to do.
You think I crossed you? I got Mr. W. on the phone.
We were talking about the deal just now.
H-he's on the phone right now.
You think I'm crossing you, you talk to him.
Go ahead, talk to him for yourself, come on.
[dramatic music]
[g*nsh*t]
[Wilcox on phone] 'Sid! Sid, what's going on there? Sid.'
I'll tell you what's going on, Mr. W.
I just put a slug in your friend, Sid Alpert.
What did you that for, Ernie?
Mr. C, to you.
He fingered me and you put him up to it.
I'm saving the next slug for you, old man.
You've got it all wrong.
I just heard five minutes ago
what Sid tried to pull, it was stupid.
Hey, don't con me.
You both thought I was stupid
and you both are wrong, dead wrong.
Well, I got one of you laying here on the floor to prove it.
You did me a big favor, Mr. C.
I just now ordered Sid out of the country.
You saved him the trip.
I don't order so easy.
No orders, Mr. C.
I told Sid I wanted to make you a percentage deal.
I guess he didn't like the competition.
Yeah, well, he just dropped out of the competition.
Then I guess we should meet, like I originally planned.
Yeah, I think we'd better...alone.
I wouldn't advise you to bring any competition.
[dramatic music]
[instrumental music]
- Who's the girl? - Beverly Holmes.
She didn't actually see Alpert shot.
She claims she saw this guy running into the room
with a g*n, she ran.
She was babbling down at this bar and started talkin' about it
that's when we got the word.
Had to wait till this morning before we could get her
to focus on the mug shots. In here.
Anything?
Ms. Homes, this is Inspector Erskine
and Special Agent Daniels from the FBI.
They'd like to show you some pictures.
- Oh, no, not more pictures. - Just these.
Look carefully, please.
Yeah, that's him.
You're certain?
Hey, don't put my name in the paper, he'll k*ll me.
Don't worry, we'll keep this confidential.
Get her statement.
Ms. Holmes, now you go along with Detective Frye, huh?
Please, I don't want my name on the paper.
You have his address handy?
I've got it but I don't think it's gonna do you any good.
We've had his place under surveillance.
I'll put out an APB.
If you got a lead, lieutenant, let us know.
We have a warrant out on him based on
uh, prints we lifted from a grenade.
Is Alpert still unconscious?
As of a half hour ago. I've got a man down there.
But Alpert doesn't do much talking even when he's awake.
When he comes to, let us know.
Will do.
'Inspector.'
Maybe Alpert's car can do some talking for us.
What about his car?
Well, it's missing from its apartment space.
New Mark IV.
We thought his girl may have driven it out but she says no.
You may have something there, lieutenant.
Cahn has a thing about expensive cars.
[instrumental music]
[music continues]
- Hey, buddy. - Yes.
Give me one with the best batteries, will you?
I'm sorry, sir. They're all reserved right now.
Yeah, well, I'm reserved one. I'm a guest of Mr. Wilcox.
Oh, yes sir, take your pick. Anyone you want.
[music continues]
[music continues]
Uh, verifying a want or a warrant on 74 Continental.
Michigan licence A-O-U-7-8-5.
[man on radio] 'Standby.'
- '5L20.' - 5L20, go ahead.
[man] 'Affirmative on that vehicle. What's your location?'
Uh, we caught a glimpse of it north on Sutton Road.
Uh, vehicle is now unoccupied in the parking lot of
the Fall Creek Country Club.
[man] 'Roger 5L20, man believed to be driving the vehicle is'
'wanted by DPD, felony warrant.'
'FBI also interested.'
Alright, Code 6, Baker.
We'll have a look around. 5L20 clear.
[birds chirping]
[dramatic music]
[music continues]
[music continues]
Mr. W, Ernie Cahn.
Well, well, it's a pleasure to meet the man
that handled the armored truck job for us.
A male about 25, answering subject's description
just picked up a golf cart and, uh, asked for a Mr. Wilcox.
He could be anywhere on the course now.
- 'DE24.' - Go ahead.
The subject is now believed to be at the Fall Creek Golf Club
somewhere out on the course.
That's a big place, inspector and it's a rural area.
The Wayne County sheriff's officers are on the scene.
Request available units of Stayton County Police
to seal off all roads leading out.
Right, you've got a few hundred acres of
escape routes out there, inspector.
We're about three minutes from town.
Ask DPD to have a helicopter standing by.
But do you think that was a wise thing to do, Ernie?
I mean, I like men who work for me to use their heads.
Yeah, he tried to butt me off and leave me to rot out
in the sticks with the rabbits.
Sid Alpert, he's the one who didn't use his head.
Well, that just may be.
I'm taking over for Sid Alpert.
You're moving kind of fast, aren't you?
Fast is my middle name, Mr. W.
You better get used to the speed
'cause you're gonna be seeing a lot of it.
- How's that again? - You heard me.
For openers, I'm taking over Sid's piece of the action
but I got some bigger plans in mind.
You might have to move over a bit.
In fact, I could ask you to step down right now.
[chuckles]
You think that's funny.
The only place you're gonna go is to the bottom.
A six-foot hole in the ground, that's what you're gonna get.
[laughing]
Hey, you better listen up here.
Get him out of here!
[dramatic music]
Drop it.
Let's go.
[music continues]
[helicopter whirring]
This is the FBI. Drop your g*ns. Hands over your heads.
[g*nshots]
[music continues]
[music continues]
[police siren blaring]
[music continues]
[music continues]
[music continues]
Cahn! Let him go!
No way.
- Get back or he gets it. - Take it easy, kid.
- Drop him. - I'm taking him with me.
Right there, Cahn!
[music continues]
[g*nsh*t]
[g*nsh*t]
This is the last time.
Throw it down.
Why don't you sh**t?
Big man. Go ahead, sh**t me.
