a rebellion.

Well, he's [bleep] lost it
this time.

with two operations down...

struggles to recover.

Kind of feel like throwing up.
[ Coughs ]

every body you can in a truck

And do whatever
you can to keep up.

Narrator: and parker schnabel's
search for gold...

I'm trying to keep
that [bleep] wash plant running.

...pushes his crew
to the limit.

one giant roller-coast ride.

I know there's big gold here
at duncan creek.

And I've spent hundreds
of thousands of dollars

Trying to find it.

his operation dialed in.

Rick: everybody's committed
to finishing this season strong.

You know, morale is good.
The ground's holding up.

The weather's holding up
for now.

So it's time to just push
right on through

Till we get froze out.

Narrator:
with 5 weeks left in the season,

Rick's got just


He's determined to hit
his 500-ounce break-even point

And put some money in the bank
for him and his crew.

Kruse: the most important thing
right now

Is that we get something out of
this ground to get to our goal.

The last thing any of us
wants to do

Is go home without a bonus,

And the last thing I want to do
is see rick lose his a*s.

Narrator: monster red
is running up to 300 yards

Of potentially gold-rich pay
every hour.

We've been up and running
pretty smoothly

The last couple of days.

Oh, boy.
We're getting there.

All hands on deck.

Just trying to, you know,
pound this dirt through.

You got to be kidding me.

There's a rock pileup.

Shut her down.

[ Machine powers down ]

I assume
this isn't good.

What happened?

Not much left.

I'm just gonna get in there
and take a look-see.

Rick:
the hopper for this conveyor

Is just lodged
in the tail wheel of our belt

And caused it to [bleep]
stall out and load up on us.

And it's just worn-out [bleep]
and it's a problem.

Narrator: after washing
all the gold-rich material

Off the rocks,

Monster red sends them out onto
the conveyor through a hopper.

The heavy duncan creek rocks
have destroyed

The sides of the hopper,

Allowing them to build up
under the conveyor belt,

Stopping the belt
and jamming the hopper.

This conveyor is not built
for this ground.

We just --
seems like it's running

Too big of rocks through
and stuff, right?

[Bleep]
I don't know, carl.

It's like,
it's so [bleep]

Wait. Is that other hopper
over there?

Let's just take that other
hopper off, like, this thing

Right here off the other one,
and put it in here.

Well, let's just go see
what kind of shape it's in.

I'm coming.

Narrator:
when rick bought monster red,

It came with
a spare tailings hopper.

So, if you armor this up here...
Yeah.

...and it doesn't have a chance
to pound through it...

Yeah.
...then it should be okay.

Yeah.

Yeah, realistically,
I'm down to try that.

To prevent the replacement
breaking in the same way,

They'll reinforce it
using impact wear plates.

First up, rick and zee
remove the damaged hopper.

Let's go.

Every hour monster red is down,

Rick's chances of breaking
even slip away.

We got it.

Rick: wow.
Boy, that is beat to [bleep]

That's pretty much a metaphor
for what these boulders

And this ground
have done to my season

And to this whole wash plant --

Beat the [bleep] out of it.

We're just k*lling it this year,
and now that we've sluicifer

And big red set up down there
side by side,

They're gonna chew through
that ground like crazy.

Narrator:


Has turbocharged his operation
in a desperate bid

To mine the rest of his ground.

Parker: we've got about 5 weeks
left in the season,

And we've still got a lot
of ground to get through.

Probably -- I don't know --


We spent a lot of money
in the crater cut.

Hopefully it pays off.

Narrator:
he's set up two wash plants
to run the crater cut pay dirt.

Parker: we've never had
two wash plants in a cut before,

And I'm sure there's gonna be
some growing pains,

But it's pretty bad-a*s.

♪

Narrator: half a mile away,
in the crater cut,

Co-foreman brennan ruault loads
rock trucks with gold-rich pay.

Brennan:
definitely is pretty bad-a*s

Seeing both those plants
running side by side.

It's definitely something
we don't see every day.

Just as long as we keep this pay
going down to that plant,

Then everything
should be golden.

Narrator: three rock trucks haul
the pay to the stockpile,

Where loader operator
bree harrison feeds

Big red and sluicifer.

We're really making it
through this dirt,

And things are looking good.

Narrator:
but running both plants 24/7
is creating a new challenge.

With both these plants going,
this tiny little stockpile

Ain't gonna do the job for us.

Hey, mitch.
How's it going?

What are these plants
doing for yardage?

You know, when we crank them up
and get them maxed out,

We'll be at 500 yards
an hour.

This stockpile ain't even
gonna get us close.

I don't know how we're gonna
hold out night shifts.

Narrator: their rock trucks
only run 12 hours a day,

So to keep the plants
fed overnight,

They need to haul 1,000 yards
of pay dirt an hour.

The trucks haul
about 27 yards a load.

That's just a little
over 400 loads in a day,

And that means we got to truck


Right.

So brennan's gonna have to
just drop everything and truck



It's gonna be tough.
Yeah.

It's gonna take everything
we got to keep up

With these two plants.

You've just got to put
every body you can in a truck

And do whatever
you can to keep up.

All right, man.
Yeah, no problem.

Hopefully we can make
a mountain here.

Brennan: parker just radioed me
and said I have to make sure

I haul enough pay down
to both those wash plants

To run for 24 hours straight
'cause we only load for 12.

It's go, go, go, go, go to try
and keep these plants running.

Narrator:
to move 400 loads in 12 hours,

Co-foreman brennan faces
a tough challenge --

Fill each rock truck
in the crater cut,

Have it haul the pay
half a mile to the pay pile,

And come back to the cut
ready to load in just 5 minutes.

Aaron:
oh, we're having a tough time.

Brennan's goal is 400 truckloads
a day, and we're hauling a*s.

[Bleep] hard to keep up.

Dennis: it's gonna be a long end
of the season

To get all this pay dirt out,

But obviously
parker's calculator

Works different
than everybody else's.

So he's doing the paying,
so he'll do the saying, I guess.

Brennan: the rock trucks are
going flat-out all day long.

You know, they're passing
each other,

Doing 100 miles an hour.

[ Horn honks ]

Look at the [bleep] do that.

Narrator: racing to build
a massive pile of pay dirt

To keep both wash plants fed
has backfired on parker's crew.

I try to keep up
with brennan in the 750.

He throws the loads in
so quick.

So we kind of get
ahead of ourselves

And try to drive
as fast as we can,

But obviously just
a little bit too fast, so...

I know he needs to get
his 400 loads a day down here,

But you guys can't be
driving this quick.

Yeah.

Every hour dennis' truck
is out of action means


On the stockpile.

When we roll it back over,
the truck rolled that way,

So we have to bring it
back this way.

If this thing starts twisting
too much or we lose it,

We're gonna snap
those hydraulic lines off.

Dennis: okay.

Dennis' rock truck
is articulated.

Okay, I'm in place, mitch.

So when the payload flipped,
the cab stayed upright.

Mitch: you guys watch out.

When this thing hammers down,
[bleep] might go flying.

Here she comes.

Man, that's a really good
feeling to see it back

On its wheels and tires.

Dennis having that rollover
in the truck,

It's really screwed
my day over.

It's gonna drop my numbers
pretty significant here.

Ohh!

Narrator: with one rock truck
out of action all day,

By the end of the shift, brennan
has only managed 250 loads.

Well, did you get
your 400 loads out today?

No, I definitely didn't hit


[Bleep] dennis rolled
his truck, and...

Mitch: you know, he just was
coming down too fast.

Is he all right?

Yeah, no, he seems, you know --
he's fine.

So, what are we gonna do
about the plants?

Well, there's definitely
not enough dirt

To get through tonight.

Yeah.
So do we shut one down?

I mean, we're either gonna --
you're gonna shut

One down now,
or you're gonna shut them

Both down in the middle
of the night.

Right.
All right.

Well, let's do that, then,

And we'll go ahead
and shut big red down.

Probably cost us 15
or 20 ounces of gold.

Narrator:
sluicifer is now the only plant

Running on night shift.

No dirt, no washing rocks.

Rick: the hopper, it's all
[bleep] blown apart inside,

So we lost almost


Because we shut down early.

Narrator:
monster red is shut down.

Coarse rocks have destroyed
the tailing's hopper.

Rick has no gold coming in.

His chances of making a profit

And paying his guys
a bonus are slipping away.

Zee: it's just, this ground's
really rough on equipment.

Everything's kind of on
borrowed time here right now.

Narrator: at the lay-down yard,
the pressure

Is on mechanic carl rosk
to modify a spare hopper

To withstand the impact
of the claim's big boulders.

What do you think, buddy?
How long is it gonna take?

I got way too much work
to do.

Nothing's happening
anytime quick, right?

They could been up there
welding the whole time, right?

Yeah.
[Bleep] right off.

Watch one guy work
like normal, right?

We've got a lot of work
inside here, right?

If I work on this tonight
and inside here,

Is carl laying down,
fixing stuff?

He's got a lot to do,

be welding plates on and stuff.

I'd be surprised if we even

Narrator: as carl reinforces
the hopper...

It's a pretty big deal to get
done at the end of the day

of his crew call it a day.

he'd definitely lose an eye.

[ Man laughs ]

Zee:
"oh, how do you do this?"

after everyone else quit early,

Carl and operator mark

Worked into the night to
strengthen the tailing's hopper.

Everybody knew we were down.
Everyone knew we had problems.

Did anybody stay late
last night? Me and mark did.

I worked till 10:00
last night to get as much done.

And I got here early.
Got everything going, right?

Everyone's, like,
pressuring, like, "we
got to go get this in."

It's like, "yeah, we
can get that in there,

We've got [bleep] 3 or 4 hours'
worth of welding to do," right?

[Bleep] drives me nuts.

the ness crew is falling apart.

After an argument
with rick, carl has quit.

I kind of get
his point of view.

to just settle down right now.

It's pretty disorganized.

not pull their weight

could be helping out.

my gold bonus

There kind of

He's the most important
part of this crew.

Narrator: after being forced
out of indian river,

Tony beets' best hope
of turning a profit

Was to run three operations
out of his paradise hill base.

Kevin's shaker was shut down
after producing just 50 ounces,

And monica has been
frozen out of the honker cut.

Mike's trommel has been
running 300 yards an hour,

But despite a deep pay layer,

The ground at the mega-cut
has been patchy.

If my plant wasn't running
this year,

We wouldn't be making no gold
for a majority of it,

Which would have made it
a very skimpy year this year.

Narrator:
now, $1.1 million short
of where he was last season,

Tony's counting on a big payday
from mike's operation.

Monica: who are
you gonna put on nights?

running mike's trommel 24/7
should help the family catch up.

So, tony kind of sprang
this night shift on mike

And I at the trommel

Because it's really the most
reliable thing we have for gold.

Narrator:
while monica feeds the plant...

They've got such a good cut
open here at the trommel that,

You know,
we really got to just push it.

Narrator: ...mike loads
rock trucks in the cut.

Mike: on night shift,
it's very simple always

To basically double
our sluicing time,

Double the amount of dirt
we have sending through.

The more we can keep going,
the more gold we got.

Monica: [ groans ]

I am not feeling overly great
right now,

And I kind of feel
like throwing up,

But I don't want to be
the reason we stop sluicing.

[ Groans ]

eldest son kevin beets

And mechanic juan ibarra arrive
at the trommel to investigate.

There's a massive crack
right on the frame.

What?

Right here.

Narrator:
mike's trommel is tony's
only means of catching gold.

Every hour it's down
costs $2,500.

The gearbox frame has cracked,

So the drive gear is rammed hard
against the cog on the trommel.

Tony's plan -- weld the cracked
beam at the base,

Then adjust the gearbox unit

To align the two gears
perfectly.

Juan: this is the ideal
welding conditions --

Surrounded by grease
and in a corner.

Watch out.

Narrator:
kevin grinds off the welds

Attaching the gearbox
to the frame.

We're trying to push this
whole gearbox over a little bit

To get a little more
clearance on those gears.

All right. Ready, kev?

Yeah. Let's go.

Narrator: kevin and juan crank
the gearbox back into position.

After a fix costing $7,500
in lost gold,

Tony needs to keep
running the night shift

To make up for lost time.

Well, with dennis rolling
the rock truck yesterday,

I never made that


So hopefully we can
make up for it now.

Narrator: co-foreman brennan
failed to haul enough pay dirt

To build a stockpile and keep
the two plants running 24/7.

After dennis' truck flipped,

Parker sends a grader
to repair the road.

How's it going?
Oh, not too bad.

So, we've got to get

We've got to have a lot
of pay stacked up.

brennan sends rock trucks

To the plants loaded
with gold-rich pay.

It's pretty crazy here today.

Brennan's trying to hit
his 400 loads a day,

And we're just
driving like crazy out here,

Trying to keep up with him.

on shift change right now,

And I'm just not as far
as I thought I'd be.

Pretty disappointing.

Narrator: after working flat-out
to hit the target,

The day shift is over.

Hey, brennan.
So, how'd we do there today?

Well, buddy,

We didn't get
our 400 loads a day.

Oh, you got to be [bleep]
kidding me!

We gave it
everything we had!

Oh, for sure.

Money mountain's looking more
like a molehill down there.

What happened?

We were giving her hell
all day long.

I know aaron and those boys
are pretty tired.

I'm trying to keep
that [bleep] wash plant running.

I already sent the boys home.

I'll go get a truck.

roped into this,

But we've got a pay mountain

So I'm driving truck.

Parker decided,

that we can get

To keep
both those plants running.

Narrator: mine boss and foreman
build up the stockpile

While both wash plants
run through the night.

About an hour into the night,
getting [bleep] done,

And I know
when he's on a mission

And I'm on a mission,
we can make a lot happen.

Parker:
now that we've got sluicifer

And big red
set up down there

Side by side, they're gonna
do 400 or 500 yards an hour,

And we have to be
able to keep up.

And so any pay mountain
we can build right now

Is gonna help us
try to maintain that feed rate.

now we're getting somewhere.

We've got to keep pushing.

And then just quit
working completely.

Mechanic carl,

Karla has persuaded rick
and carl to sit down and talk.

Carl: absolute [bleep] joke

wants to work, right?

I got a lot of respect for him
and what he's done.

And installs the hopper

The argument between
rick and carl kind of,

I'm sure,
sparked some motivation,

So we got to try and, you know,
push for this last homestretch.

Carl: rick's doing everything
he told me he'd do,

And, man,
that makes me happy, right?

Like, so it wasn't in one ear,
out the other ear.

He took it to heart,
and hopefully everybody

Is gonna
pull their weight now.

Carl's back in action.

You know, sometimes it takes
a quick brawl,

Get some words out, and I think
we're back to normal.
