Is over a third of the way
into the short season.

But he's making up for lost time
with a hot start.

We're definitely trying to take
a new approach this year

With moving the plants
more often

And trucking a lot less pay.

So sluicer was just
finishing up.

We're about to start
a plant move.

I'm just looking forward to

Narrator: Parker's new strategy
is working.

The team's been getting


Than last season.

You always start a cleanup
with a cigar.

Narrator:
After running for just 10 days

At the current location,

Sluicifer's ready
to be cleaned and moved.

Chris: I'm hoping there's
good gold in there.

quite shortly here.

Chris: Are you here to help

spraying me with water.

I've been holding off.

[ laughing ]

Narrator: Rookie plant boss
tyson lee loads the first tank

Of concentrate.

Want to make sure
that that's level in there.

Parker: It doesn't need
to be leveling that.

Well, I mean, so it's not
spilling out that side.

He just means so it's not
spilling out, nick!

Yeah, yeah, yeah,
it's good.

We ain't
making a painting.

We're only moving gold
instead.

Dozer, in the back.

Narrator:
Four miles away in the last cut,

Co-foremen mitch blaschke
and brennan ruault

Are running wash plant big red.

How's it going?

Oh, not too bad.

We're ready to move
the wash plant again.

You guys have a plant move
coming up tomorrow, then, huh?

-Yeah, for sure.
-[bleep]

'cause that's the same time

The other plant's
planning on moving.

Mitch: And what's our game plan
for tomorrow?

I mean, if we're trying to move
both plants at the same time,

That's gonna be
a handful.

Okay, thing is, we're gonna
both need the rigging.

Rigging -- yeah,
that's gonna be a problem.

There's gonna be a few things
that have to get juggled,

But it should be
just the usual [bleep]

-[ laughs ]
-perfect.

[ laughter ]

Brennan: Let's do it.

Narrator:
To get ready for the move,

Brennan builds a wash-plant pad.

Brennan: You know, the [bleep]
part of all this is,

We've never had two plants
ready to move

At the exact same time.

You know,
we're already stretched thin

With people not being here.

And if anything is to [bleep]
go wrong at either plant move,

You know, it's really
gonna set us behind.

Narrator:
Mitch starts the teardown.

-Hey, chris, you got a copy?
-Yeah, mitch, what up?

Everything's done sluicing,

And we just need to
clean this up

So we can move these runs.

Chris: Dude, I can't.

We're cleaning up sluicifer,
full box.

You're still --
you're at sluicifer?

I got my whole crew.
I can't move them now.

We're gonna be
waiting on you.

Sorry, bud.

All right, well, just get here
as soon as you can,

We'll figure something out.

the morning this way,

the rest of the day is going.

Narrator: Next morning
in the laydown yard,

Mechanic shane smith arrives

In search of equipment
for the sluicifer move.

We're a little short
on rigging here.

I'm trying to beat
mitch and brennan to the punch

'cause I think we're gonna
be ready to move

Sluicifer
from where they are.

So I'm just grabbing the rigging
before they come and get it.

Then we'll have no choice.
We get to move first.

Well, we got a big day, then.
Both wash plant same time.

We've never had to
do this before.

So, I mean, you guys
got the 750,

So you got some horsepower down
there for dragging sluicifer.

We got 480
is the only thing.

Tyson: It's gonna be
a challenge for sure.

Who's gonna be up first?

Yeah, I bet you
it's gonna be us there.

Oh, yeah?

Well, we'll see.

Shane:
Well, we got the rigging.

They're gonna have to
fight us for it.

-Yeah. [ laughs ]
-all right.

Well, see at
the end of the day

Which one's shaking first.

-Good luck, guys.

Narrator: On paradise hill,
klondike legend tony beets

Is making up for a late start.

James, do you copy?

At the mega cut, which tony
believes could get him



Son mike is chewing through


Hey, james,
how's it going up there?

James:
My day is going great.

That's good, james.
Keep it going, eh?

Mike: Another nice day
of sluicing,

Which is good since it's
the only [bleep] thing

Sluicing right now is
the trommel.

Narrator:
To cash in on high gold prices,

Tony's also been searching for
other quick scores on the hill.

Half a mile away
from mike's trommel,

Tony spotted a pile of rocks
and gravel

That he believes are tailings
left over by old-timers,

Lying below the remains
of an old sluice run.

Yeah, what's up?

♪♪

Kevin: Oh, yeah.

-Yeah.
-Yeah.

-Nope.
-No.

Now, did you recently
get told...

♪♪

They probably
started around

When the [bleep]
gold rush happened.

Narrator: The remains of
the old mine workings

Date from the 1940s.

Old-timers used hoses
to wash valuable pay dirt

From the hillside
into the sluice runs.

Their basic technology
only caught half the gold,

But the ground was so rich,

They still pulled in
thousands of ounces.

Now tony wants to find out
what they left behind

In their discarded
tailings piles.

Monica: Yeah.

Kevin: No, not at
the current prices.

At least check it out,
see what's in there.

Might as well.

Yep.

-Oh, yeah.
-Yeah.

-Oh, yeah.
-Yeah.

Narrator: Tony's located
the old-timers' tailings pile

Halfway down the hill.

Now he must dig up a sample

To find out
if it contains lost gold.

Monica: He's not the one that
has to lift them into the --

Narrator:
Monica runs the tailings
through the test trommel

To send up to the gold room

Where tony pans the concentrate.

Minnie: Yes, I do.

Be right up.

That's a lot of gold
in there.

Oh, you're all excited now?

Oh, my gosh.

Misfits,
are we ready to rumble?

Let's get ready to rumble!

Narrator:
In oregon's elkhorn mountains,

Rookie mine boss fred lewis
has gambled his last $20,000

Setting up a gold mine

With a greenhorn crew
of combat veterans.

We've been here four weeks,

And only 1/2 ounce of gold
to show.

Problem after problem keeps
plaguing us here on the claim.

If we don't get it moving today,

The rest of the season's
gonna be a washout,

And we're gonna
go home with nothing.

Standby, standby,
standby,

Narrator:
Fred's foreman, kendell madden,

Is the only member of the team
with any mining experience.

Are you ready?
Are you ready?

He's in charge of firing up
the wash plant, colonel nugget,

For their first full week
of sluicing.

-Water's coming.
-Water's coming!

Digger's coming on.

Fire it up, stuart!

Water flow's looking good.

Our discharge is looking good.

You know,
we're actually giving it

Paydirt right now,
so it's a victory!

Narrator: This crew of veterans
arrived three weeks ago

On a mission
to turn their lives around.

You know, there's gold means
a lot to all of us.

Just another disabled vet
who kind of, you know,

Come on rough times
and been out of work

For a year and a half.

Narrator: Special operations
sergeant kyle pletzke

Feeds the plant.

We're here to dig.
We're here to find gold,

Prove to ourselves,
prove to the world that, hey,

Find yourself down on your luck,
it doesn't matter.

Pick yourself up, go again.

Go for the gold, baby.

Fred: I truly feel like
I'm blessed

With this group of veterans

Because we can trust
each other so much,

We can rely on each other
in some pretty significant ways.

And I'm expecting these guys
to come out like rock stars.

Khara:
Fred and I were both at

The special operations
language school

At fort bragg, north carolina,

Less than two months later,
we got married in vegas.

Narrator:
Fred's wife, khara,

Army psychological operations
specialist,

Has come in to manage the claim.

Fred might be the mine boss,
but I am the mine manager.

He's gonna have to deal with me

Telling him
when things need to get done.

I have never managed
a mine before.

I've never actually
mined before.

So it's definitely
a hands-on learning experience.

But I've been ordering
the books that we need.

We need our surface mine
daily inspection book.

We need our checklists
for the vehicles.

Our msha certificates arrived

'cause we just got done
doing our msha training.

Msha is the mine safety
and health administration.

They give us what we need to be
to be compliant for our safety.

And if we aren't compliant,
if we don't follow the rules,

Msha will come out here,

And they will tag us
with massive fines.

There's a lot of stuff
I'm seeing

That I'm really nervous
we might not be compliant with.

We'd get hit with a fine,
big time,

If those inspectors came
right now.

We'd be in a lot of trouble.

I knew that we were gonna
financially struggle

Just trying to get by.

Fred came up with this.

I honestly didn't think
he could pull it together,

But he has.

However, we actually
personally know the crew,

And these aren't
just his friends.

They're kind of our family.

And you don't want to
let family down.

If this collapses,
if this doesn't work out,

We're screwed.
They're screwed, too.

So there's a lot on the line.
It's a lot of pressure.

Fred:
Try and go a little faster.

Now we're running pay,
we're catching gold.

That's why we're here.

Yep, yep, that's perfect.
Just like that.

Water flow's pretty good.

Our feed rate's
pretty consistent.

Just got to keep doing it
thousands of times over.

Okay.

So right now, I'm gonna climb up
in the colonel

And see if I can push some
of that stuff

That's not feeding.

Khara: Fred!

Hey!
Shut it down!

Shut it down.

♪♪

You were just standing up there
with no harness, nothing,

Any little thing
could have happened.

We just have to stop to get
everything msha-ready.

We are not ready
to be running at all.

We have a lot to do.

All right, listen,
I've got this list in the truck.

[bleep]
I love you, babe.

I know.
You better take this serious.

I'm taking it serious.

If an inspector shows up,
we are gonna get hit with

At least $100,000
worth of fines.

We're gonna get shut down.

Kendell: There are certain
things I'm really glad

To have fred around in.

One of them is
getting yelled at right now.

Kyle: I mean, what does
she really want, though?

We got hard hats, right?
What else do we need?

We have to get a protective cage
around the belt.

We need rails
on the catwalk.

We need weatherproof
power box

Between the generator
and the plant.

Fred: So, you sure we have
to do all the stuff?

I'm 100% certain,

But if you don't want to
take my word for it

And you want them to come
and shut us down

And send all these guys home
with nothing,

'cause that's on you.

It's not gonna be on me.

Narrator: At indian river,
for the first time ever,

Parker's crew is moving
two wash plants on the same day.

Both crews need to complete
their move in a single shift.

Parker: Right now, we've kind of
got things going on

That are all not the most
enjoyable parts of the process.

Big red's moving.
Sluicifer's moving.

And hopefully
we can get it sorted out.

It's just catching up on us
a little bit

'cause we're short-handed.

-Do you wanna yank that over?
-Sounds good.

I'll walk on over.

Narrator:
On the promised land...

We might have to go
this way.

...Rookie plant boss tyson
will move sluicifer

With parker's biggest excavator,
the 750...

Tyson: We got the cables
all hooked up to sluicifer,

And just gonna
drag her over there.

Narrator:
...While at the last cut...

Whoo! All right!
Yeah! Plant move!

...Parker's trusted co-foreman
brennan

Must make do moving
big red 140 yards

With the smaller 480.

Dude, we want to show
those boys up, right?

-Yeah, yeah.
-Big red. Let's do this.

Nice and easy!

Mitch: Should have
a whole crew out here.

That's how we've done it
in the past.

It's how we do it quickly.

I mean, right now we're trying
to do all this with two people.

It's pretty ridiculous.

We're doing everything
we can here to just keep going.

Hopefully brennan gets us
over there without,

Well, screwing anything up.

You've got to be kidding me.

is hauling sluicifer



He uses the 750 to pull
the 45-ton plant to its new pad.

It's gonna be
a one-shot deal.

Parker: What are you
concerned about?

It's pretty soft.

If he sinks it in,
we're just screwed.

Gotcha.

Parker: Everybody here
knows what they're doing.

Hopefully we can get it
sorted out, you know,

Just the best we can.

Time for the uphill.

Shane: Yeah, I hope tyson can
get this up the hill okay.

Moving it with the 750 --
it's the biggest machine we got,

So it's the right one
for the job.

He doesn't usually pull
the sluicifer that often,

So hopefully he'll get it right
the first time.

We made the ramp out of
coarse tailings.

It's pretty soft.

-Whoa!
-Whoa, whoa, whoa!

Holy [bleep]

Shane: Oh, hold it, hold it,
hold it! Stop right there.

Holy [bleep]

One mistake,
and then we got to pull it down

And redo the whole ramp again.

Come on, you [bleep] thing.

This wash plant
weighs 90,000 pounds,

And it's just pulling me down.

Tyson:

At the promised land,

Rookie plant boss tyson lee
is working against the clock,

Struggling to drag sluicifer
up a soft pad.

Tyson: Whoa!

Man, this wash plant's
[bleep] heavy.

Shane: Tyson! Come out
and go get back and flat,

Sit in there, and then just
curl your bucket out.

It'll get going,
and you just got to keep

Doing it
till you get up the hill.

There you go.

Come on, you [bleep],
come on.

Come on, let's go.
Get up this hill.

Hey, shane!
How's it look?

You just got to keep doing it
inch by inch.

Whoo!

How we looking, shane?

We're gonna make it.

Can start coming
pretty good now.

-Somebody watch my back end.
-Off track.

You're gonna go over the edge.

Take it slow.

Man: You're really hurrying it.

Think you got her now.

Yeah! There we go.

Shane: Nice job, dude.
She's sitting pretty.

-Perfect.
-She happy?

-Yeah, I'm happy.
-We're gonna win this one.

That's good.

Narrator: Back at the last cut,
six hours into the move,

Brennan has already got
big red onto its pad.

-How'd that go?
-Call me winch cat.

-I only see one problem.
-What?

It's going the wrong way.

It's backwards.

[bleep] sakes.

Brennan:
We can spin it up here --

Mitch: Oh, that's gonna
tear things up.

You can already see how bad
it's digging in.

I think the easiest thing is
to pull it back down the hill,

Bring it back up, and have it
right where it needs to be.

Sounds like a plan.

It's all right, you know.

We're just trying to
win a race here

And show the other guys up,
and we'll just do things twice.

It's pretty cool.

[ laughs ]
get the [bleep] out.

"hey, brennan, you want to
put that wash plant up there?"

"yeah, sure, buddy.
Hey, I got it up there."

"it's going the wrong way."
"well, [bleep]"

You're so funny.

Mitch: He's been around big red
for, what, six years now?

And he still doesn't even know
which end we feed it.

Do it better the second time,
brennan.

Narrator: After half a day
dragging the plant onto the pad,

Brennan now has to spend another
two hours turning it around.

Well...

Now we wait.

♪♪

We want to be up and running
before big red is.

Sluicifer's all set up.

We got the feeder in,
the super stacker in,

Water pumps in, pipelines in,
ready to fire her up.

[ motor starts ]

Well, we fired it up.
I hope we won.

Hey, brenda,
you got a copy?

What's going on, tyson?

We're up and running, man.

Think you might have
beat us.

We kicked your a*s!

[ laughs ]

Mitch: [bleep], man, like,
if you would have

Brought the plant in
the right way,

We would have beat them,

Even though they had 750
and more help.

-Whatever.
-Come on, man.

Yeah, well, whatever.

Tyson:
We're back sluicing!

Shane: A lot better than
the other guys

Who were up there backwards
this morning.

Little bit of brain fart
going on.

[ both laugh ]

Whoo!

Oh. [ laughs ]

We beat big red!

Oh, [bleep] yeah, man!

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!

Narrator: On paradise hill,
tony beets has discovered gold

In a monster pile
of old-timers' tailings.

Wayne: Copy that.

The gold-rich tailings
are lying right on the surface,

So tony can run them
straight away.

With gold prices up

And the costs of running
the tailings so low...

Monica: Let's go!

...These tailings could give
tony a massive extra payday.

Fire it up!

Monica feeds the kiwi plant

With 100 yards
of paydirt an hour

While rookie loader operator
desiree leikam...

Hey, desiree.

...Clears fine tailings from
the end of the sluice run.

Looks pretty nice
down there.

Yep, everything's good.

Tony is extra pumped about
what we can get

From this old-timer cut,

Because right now
it's just the trommel going.

♪♪

Monica:
Hey, desiree?

Desiree?

[ clanging ]

Look out!

[ banging ]

Shut off the plant,
shut off the plant.

Holy [bleep]

♪♪

Monica: Desiree?

Look out!

[ banging ]

Desiree:
Monica, monica?

Shut off the plant,
shut off the plant.

Narrator: On paradise hill,
monica beets' loader operator,

Has run into the wash plant.

Shut it off!

Holy [bleep]
what happened?

I don't know.
I hit the cable and tray fell.

Monica:
Kevin, do you copy, kevin?

The sluice run is off.

Narrator:
Every hour the plant is down

Costs tony up to $2,000
in lost gold.

Kevin: Yep.
[bleep] [bleep]

How is that welded on that side?
One sec.

Okay. [bleep]

Our hull operator hooked
the cable there

With the bucket
when they were pulling out,

And that pulled
this beam forward,

And that caused this run
to get pulled forward,

And that twisted
or beam over here.

Fun, fun, fun.

What we're gonna have to do
is bend that bar back straight,

Weld the [bleep] piece back on
relatively straight,

And then reset the angle
on the run.

Narrator: Welder cody hunter
removes the sluice run

To get to the broken beam.

So just pull that back there,

Put a couple little tacks on it,

Split this, we'll be done.

Narrator: He cuts a slot
so he can bend it...

Cody: Yeah, we'll just
pull that back there.

That's hot.

Narrator: ...And then welds it
back together.

Cody: Kevin.

Kevin: Beams all straightened
back out now?

It's all welded up
and ready for the next time.

-Beautiful.
-You like that?

[bleep]

Kevin:
Gonna put this run back on,

Reset the box.

That's the current plan.

We'll see what blows up
between now and the end of that.

Steady now.

Another one bites the dust.

Narrator: The fix has cost them
eight hours.

Kevin: Let's do this!

[ motor starts ]

Fire it up!

Kevin: It is kind of nifty
that the old-timers,

They did a bunch of sluicing,
but they lost so much,

So it'll be very interesting
to see

What we're gonna pull out of
what all they missed.

It did look good
in the mini trommel.

As for what we're gonna
get out, hopefully a lot more.

We'll find out
when we put it on the table.

Fred: You know, since we've
been here,

We've had to shut down
multiple times.

I know the guys
are getting antsy,

And I know they're biting
at the bit to get going.

And this is just another letdown
for them.

Narrator: In oregon,
special forces medic

Turned gold miner fred lewis
is at a standstill.

Khara: Just doing what I have to
do to keep us running.

Narrator:
Wife and mine manager khara

Has pulled the plug until they
can meet safety standards.

Khara: I'm the one who is making
sure that we are msha compliant

And that we are following
all the rules

And doing everything
that the state of oregon

Needs us to do in order
for our mine to be safe,

For our mine to be legal.

We can't afford any problems.

Narrator: Msha is the authority
in charge of mining.

If they find violation
of safety rules,

They can shut down the mine...

[bleep] damn
these big-a*s rocks.

...And fine the operator

Hundreds of thousands
of dollars.

You know, all I wanted to do
is come out here,

Get a little bit of gold
while the world is going crazy.

Yeah.

This msha [bleep] is a lot more
stringent than I expected,

But this [bleep]
is crazy dangerous.

So we got to stay extra safe
because we want to make sure

Everyone comes out
with all their fingers and toes.

To meet compliance,
foreman kendell

Needs to move the generator
onto stable ground.

We got the generator
all cleaned up, ready to go.

We took the hood off
so we can move her down

Into its permanent position.

You just got to remember,
if you do -- if you slip up,

This thing full of oil and gas,
all spills into our water

And essentially ruins
our season.

So no pressure
or anything, but...

-Oh, no, none whatsoever.
-You know?

Narrator: Three weeks ago,

Master sergeant
stefan generally's

Only experience of heavy
equipment was in the military.

Stefan: For my first 10 years
in the army,

I commanded
a bradley fighting vehicle.

Fred: She's almost up
off the ground.

Driving mechanized vehicles
in the army --

A lot different.

Now swing out.

All right. Whoa, whoa, whoa,
whoa, whoa.

Right there.

Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa,
whoa, whoa, whoa.

Nice and slow.
There you go.

We only have one generator.

Treating this with kid gloves,

Baby movements, feather hands,
feather fingers.

Whoa, whoa, whoa.
Hold onto it. Stay there.

All right, we're gonna
chalk this generator.

Hopefully she never
has to move again.

Next step --
we're gonna level

This bad boy,
get her set and ready.

Whoo! That was a ride
I did not want to take, brother.

The damn thing tilted up.
[bleep]

Not only is the generator
going into the pond,

But we're going with it.

That just about scared
the [bleep] out of me.

I could actually feel
my heart going

Just a little bit above normal.

$10,000 worth of equipment
could have been in that water.

That could have
ruined us right there.

So hopefully this works.

Fred just told us
