03x15 - Monster Christmas Float

Post by bunniefuu »

- [Voiceover] Yes, Virginia.

There is a monster garage.

- On the first day of Christmas

My true love game to me.

- [Voiceover] But you may not hear tons of Christmas cheer.

- Ahhhhhhh,

- [Voiceover] Everyone knows Jesse doesn't like whiners.

You better not cry.

I'm telling you why.

- [Voiceover] Tis the season of transformation.

- Five Gear heads out there.

Now I gotta turn 'em into Art Geeks.

- [Voiceover] Not an easy challenge on Monster Garage.

So line up the lawn chairs

'cause the creatures are stirring.

- Oh I just hooked a dude.

This is my version of hell.

- [Voiceover] Monster Garage is heading to town.

- This is the craziest thing I ever *bleep heard of.

- [Voiceover] Join us now as Jesse

and his g*ng of Maverick Mechanics rip grind

and burn, transforming ordinary street vehicles into monster

machines in the Monster garage.

- [Voiceover] This week's mission turned this

dressed up like a 91 Testarossa into the fiercest

and wildest parade float ever seen.

The rules:

The team can spend no more than 5,000 bucks.

Jesse and his crew has seven days and nights.

On the first day they design,

for the next five day build.

And on the seventh day they parade, if successful.

They walk away with a $3,400 set of Mac tools

and the clock chimes now.

Jesse drives the beast

through the,

Wait.

Who is this driving into the Monster Garage?

- Oh, that's great.

Came all the way down

the 4 0 5 dies now.

- [Voiceover] For this holiday special.

We brought in a ringer to help spread some Christmas fear.

Discovery's popular on-air decorator.

Christopher Lowell.

- Talk to the hand.

- [Voiceover] And he's already spreading some Feng Shui Ying

into the Monster Garage's Ying.

- I could take care of this.

You know these guys,

they didn't know what they're doing.

You know it's really, really loud.

You could stuff a couple of throw pillows in here

and that kind of muffle the sound

and add a kind of a decorative element to it.

What do you think?

you know?

Perfect space right there.

Be nice.

- [Voiceover] But his card has given up the ghost

of Christmas, past, present, and future.

So Chris Kringle Lowell gets a little push

into the monster garage.

- Okay,

here we go

- [Voiceover] Where he meets the art director

from his hit show, Jocelyn Boris

and the rest of the design team

and then the jolly old man himself.

- Hey Jess, how are ya?

- What's up Chris?

- [Voiceover] To honor the holiday season,

Jesse James doesn't wanna watch the festivities.

He wants to be part of them.

- So we're gonna build a parade float.

- Say you take like the ghost

of Christmas present from Charles Dickens, Scrooge

with a sickle and the whole thing

and he's actually dragging the tree through a graveyard.

- You like to scare him.

What about something that scares people?

A big scorpion or a snake or

- Any germ of an idea here, Jess,

that we can go from?

- My first thing was a wheelie float.

We'll do a float that does wheelies,

but then I thought with me driving at a parade,

it would have to like teeter

and go super slow so we wouldn't run over any kids.

- Yeah, parade speed is two and a half miles an hour.

- Yes.

- It's not very exciting.

- No.

- How about evil Santa?

I mean evil snowman

that spits flames of course

- You want everybody to love it

or do we want everybody to hate it?

- Yeah,

- I do a room and they hate it.

I'm out of business like big time

- Man what's your budget, Jess?

- Like five grand.

- Alright, well I'm outta here.

- There's a good idea out there somewhere.

It just hasn't, hasn't hit me.

- [Voiceover] It took a little time,

but Jesse just got a monster idea.

Go evil.

- Well, maybe we should try to scare the hell out of them

- Mommy is Santa dead?

Yes, I think so.

- Man, you should hear the thoughts going

on in my head right now.

- [Voiceover] It looks like a big stocking,

full of fear will come from Jesse James this year.

Before he lets Christopher's whimsy get out of hand,

Jesse talks garage with the float expert.

- Now how's this stuff made like that?

Is that just all tubing and chicken wire and

- This is all steel rod quartering, steel rod shaped

and then covered with window screen, then sprayed

with a cocooning material,

plastic material.

- [Voiceover] For this design.

Jesse couldn't have picked a better float expert than

d*ck Gillespie.

- Yeah, I've been working on floats since the mid 60s

and as my sons grew up, they got involved in the business.

So there's three generations there and it runs in the family

- To keep the tradition alive,

His family legacy will be joining the monster holiday build,

calling on demons from Christmas dreams past.

Jesse comes up with a plan.

- We need to do one like this where it's either a snowman

or like a scary skull face Santa.

- Yeah.

- So do you want him to start that way

or do you want him to surprise you that as it

as this thing begins to animate, it turns into

- I think it's got a surprise.

It's gotta look like

Santa's passed out drunk

and then all of a sudden he raaaah,

He wakes up pissed

and starts raining candy out of his hands.

Then they'll know Santa's real.

Santa's real pissed.

- [Voiceover] Here's how they'll make a fake Ferrari float.

Strip it down to its bare bones to prepare it

for its bsd to the bone,

Monster sized Santa.

The flick of a switch will raise their whole forward

to power line threatening height,

an added touch candy cannons

in each arm will blast

sweetness into the cheering crowd.

- See, I knew there was a good idea.

It just took me a second to click

[Fun music plays]

[Rock music plays]

- [Voiceover] To see that Santa has the right helpers.

Jesse's assembled a team

that has float making in their family tree.

Mike Gillespie Sr.

A float builder and son of d*ck Gillespie.

The Rose Parade's ultimate float guru.

Mike Gillespie Jr.

A general automotives guy who's dabbled in the family float

business.

Ian Johnson,

A car engine and mechanical expert

coming all the way from the 51st State Canada.

Jeff Covey, custom fabricator

and race car builder from Middleville, Michigan.

Garth McCrohan,

a pro welder and monster Garage phonetic,

and expert float sculptor.

Gary Twemlow from Duarte, California.

Jesse introduces himself to the team

then to this week's challenge.

- So we're gonna make the world's coolest parade float.

I think it might scare a lot of people,

but that'll be cool.

Basically we wanna have this thing going down the street

like Santa's dead.

It'll look like, you know, real clean,

nice Santa on the top

and then when it stands up,

it's gonna have a total skull face

and I want it to rain candy over the crowd.

Either out of like air tubes in his hands

where it dumps it into like a chamber and shoots it

- Unfazed by Jesse's wicked Christmas vision.

The team starts to chew on the task

- Motor and step off exposed when he goes up?

- Yeah, I don't care.

We could shorten the whole chassis.

I mean we could shorten it

and then make that whole engine

and everything and couple it right to the rear end.

This looks like he's got it bending at the knees.

That would probably put his knees right

about at the door jam.

So this here forward would all,

huh?

Like that.

- Okay.

- Which might actually be kind of cool.

Yeah, actually if we shorten it up as short as we can,

you know with the front wheels is then we can do like 360s

with it.

Raaaah

[laughs]

Yeah to the kids

[laughs]

- The next year when they ask the kids, you know?

What do you want Santa to get you this year?

Nothing.

[laughs]

- His face back.

- [Voiceover] But what kind of producers

would we be if there was no monster gift

for the Master Garage or on a Christmas bill?

- Is there present in here that can

- It is Body G.

- What's he doing here?

[laughs]

- [Voiceover] Past Monster Garage or Body Drop.

Who showed his skills on the RV Skate Ramp Show

wants in on the holiday fun.

- You wanna help us?

- Sure.

- All right.

- [Voiceover] Now that the Christmas niceties

are out of the way,

it's time to tear open their present.

[Rock music plays]

- There you go.

- [Voiceover] The tear out is going along without a hitch,

but is the Christmas helper one of Santa's elves

or Scrooge's assistant?

- Body drop unplugged my cord.

[rock music continues]

- [Man 1] You can do it.

- I always want to do that on purpose.

- [Voiceover] Now that they've kicked the kit

out of their car,

the team can start working on other challenges.

- Why don't we start it up and see

what's wrong with that, if anything?

- Well, if you wanna check the firing wire,

you've got one, you've got 2, 5, 6,

no Frangars, right.

- Really?

- Yeah. 2 8 2 4 3's are like that.

- [Voiceover] Ian Johnson is a perfect team member

for this build

because he lives a lot closer to the North Pole.

- [Ian] I'm from Smith Falls, Ontario, Canada.

I'm a high school auto shop teacher.

- [Voiceover] He uses Monster Garage as a teaching aide

- Monster Garage as a shop teacher,

it almost makes my job easier in a way.

We'll talk about Monster Garage for 20 minutes

before class starts and they just wanna know

about everything that happened.

How did they cut that piece of metal?

What was that piece of machinery that you used?

I found it's really got the kids interested in shopping at

different level than they used to be.

- [Voiceover] Wait until they see their teacher in action.

- Watch your eyes.

Yeah, it's got lots of fuel pressure man.

It's not the fuel pump, it's not the fuel pump relay.

It's something more serious than that.

- Yeah right

- [Voiceover] Now that the team has had a chance to see

what they're up against,

they take a breather

and float some concerns.

- Well like the biggest concern right now

is the car won't run.

When you roll it over,

Like it's not the oil pressure's low

on crank like you can hear the rod knock it.

- Well what do we do if we look at a used motor

from a junkyard motor, trans combination.

Something they pull out that we can use.

- I'll spend another hour

or so on getting the motor running.

- Okay,

- Then we'll plan a motor,

a motor swap. Sound good?

- Wait, don't run off yet.

All we gotta do is need to work.

- We need to

okay, Santa's gotta bend over at the knees.

- What do we need for that,

linear actuator?

You wanna do it hydraulically?

- Linear.

- It's like you guys are the float guys.

That's your world.

So I think it's best if you guys do that.

Like I don't, I don't know anything about

making Santa Bend at the knees.

- Tell us if you need us to weld,

put something together, whatever.

We'll do that.

- The team will divide into two groups.

One group will get the car shortened and running smoothly

while the others will be building Santa.

Artsy fabricators:

Mike and Gary have made a career at Phoenix Decorating

building Power parade floats.

- I've always been artistic.

So when I got on they,

they shooted me right into the art department.

I did a lot of the screening,

cocooning, painting, that sort of thing.

- I do their mechanical end of things.

In other words, I'll take a chassis

and fix whatever needs to be fixed.

They don't gimme any miles on 'em,

but they're pushing a lot of weight

and they get a lot of wear and tear on 'em

- To keep the family legacy afloat.

Mike Junior has followed in his father's

and grandfather's footsteps.

- Floats have been a part of my life ever since I grew up.

I'm really interested in what my father was doing

and my grandfather.

- The floats these men build are super sized, super powered

and can be super expensive, reaching as much as $300,000

for one monster machine.

But after eight months of building,

what do these float aficionados do with them?

- It's over so fast

and then next thing you know it's in the yard

and you're taking bolt cutters to it

and throwing it in a dumpster.

That took a little while to get used to.

- On the first build day,

Gary's showing his true colors.

He's serious and he's nervous about the

monster task at hand.

- I mean it is a float.

So it's going down.

It's gonna be in a parade.

So width is a consideration.

Visually, he's gotta be able to drive it.

He's gotta be able to see whatever we decide

to put in his knees to get him up and down.

You know that's gonna be a pretty big job too so

- The mechanical knees that will raise Santa's body

is no small task,

but right away the team

may have scavenged some scrap in the

monster junkyard that may solve the problem.

- What is that? Four feet?

- 42 Yeah.

- Oh man, that's three.

- The level length is 9 inches on

a 12 inch - 12 inch cylinder.

- cylinder.

That'll do 90. That'll do a 90.

- Perfect.

- I don't know if we can use these.

They said we could

use anything in the yard though, huh?

- [Voiceover] But these arms have an evil history.

They were part of the very first monster garage failure.

Cursed construction parts are not.

The team breathes new life into the dead beast.

[Rock music plays]

- That's nice.

Structurally sound strong.

That's what we'll do.

We'll power it up

and then gravity it down

using a Tailgate pump.

- It would probably save a good day, day

and a half of steel fabrication.

- [Voiceover] As promised Ian works

over the original Firebird engine

and brings it back to life.

- [Man 1] It's alive.

Check it out man.

- Cut it off right now let's run it up

in the air and cut it off.

- We're gonna cut the car off right behind the seat.

'cause Jesse would like a real short wheel base so

that he can attempt to spin the car around.

So what we're gonna do is take the rear end housing

and move it all the way up here

and make about a 10 foot long car out of it

- [Voiceover] And the boys get fired up.

[upbeat music plays]

- [Voiceover] The car team's torching, grinding, sawing

and good old fashioned banging this car apart.

- [Man] Here she is

- [Voiceover] And the Pontiac's unibody frame is now in two.

- [Man] That is,

that is the fun way.

Half a car

- [Voiceover] As a final order of business

on their first build day,

Garth cuts out the only thing they'll need from the back

half of the car,

the rear axle.

[Rock music plays]

- [Voiceover] And saves it for their new shortened car.

- Oh yeah.

- [Voiceover] After just one build day,

the team has put quite a dent in their car

and figured a way to raise Santa.

But Gary's got plenty of work ahead of him

and he has only four days til Christmas.

Munster Garage factoid.

The Macy's Thanksgiving day parade is second only

to the United States government as the largest consumer

of helium in America.

But experts say by the year 2010.

There may be no helium left on earth.

- [Voiceover 2] Oh no.

Heavy.

♪ Monster, Monster Garage

- [Voiceover] On the third day of Monster Christmas,

the car has been separated and so has the team.

Mike Sr. finds out how much weight

his scrap metal arms will have to lift.

- What do you think Santa is gonna weigh?

- You mean total complete done?

I'm, I'll probably use the 200 pounds

of rod maybe to get it done.

- What's the candy?

- Screen Candy.

Whatever we throw inside.

Yeah Four, 400 pounds

- [Voiceover] To help this monster get off the ground,

the father son team spend a little bit of the budget.

- What we did was we swapped out the reservoir

to a larger one so we get more

fluid running through the system.

- I'm laying out skeleton Santa Claus.

I got a one foot grid here

and I'm transferring a three eight scale drawing

of the figure that we're trying to do.

To get it full size, I just transfer the grid

to a one foot grid, so every three-eighths

of an inch here equals one foot on my grid.

- [Voiceover] Inside, the team's other half starts building

their minicars seat.

- Right, Tomorrow we're gonna build able to roll cage,

off rom here we're gonna build

our own aluminum top fuel type seat

inside of it for Jesse to sit in.

The Santa's gonna lay out over the front of the car

and it's going to pick up with the hydraulics

and stand up in the air from there

so it'll actually stand in front of him.

- [Voiceover] Jeff Covey takes his clients' dreams

and turns them into custom race car realities.

- Most of the guys that come to us come with a idea of a car

that they want to build out of the ordinary.

We've done a lot of things like wheelie cars.

We've built a lot of the strange stuff that's out there.

- [Voiceover] His own racing career began with a bit

of illicit borrowing,

even if it was all in the family.

- By the time I turned 16,

I was swiping my mother's Buick out

of the garage on Saturday night when she wasn't around

and was going to the race track

and racing it in the F stock clock category

back in the early seventies.

She always wondered why that car used

so many tires as it did

- [Voiceover] Back outside,

Gary's making progress

by placing pencil thin steel rod over his drawing.

- Basically what you do,

you do a front view of it,

then you do a side view of it,

and then you stand the two up

and you put the two together

and then you just lace it up with some rings.

The silhouettes take some time.

- [Voiceover] The car's starting to take some shape,

so the lead elf himself comes in to check things out

and immediately finds a fault in the plan.

- We try to stand him up.

It's gonna have this big hole in his stomach.

- [Voiceover] The plan was for Santa

to completely cover the car,

but when he's raised,

he'll reveal an engine sized hole in his chest.

- We could make his torso come up over here

and then his arms go right past here.

- [Voiceover] Jesse wants the team to spin Santa

so his boots will hide the engine compartment

to match the body with the bigger boots.

The 12 foot Santa Gary already started will have to increase

to nearly 25 feet long and 10 feet wide.

- I think the whole thing with him going down the street

where it just looks like Santa's floating down the

street face down.

It's cool.

- Okay, cool.

Fat Santa.

Yeah, it's feasible, sure.

In four days,I don't know man.

That's the only thing

that would keep us from doing it

now is the time.

- [Voiceover] And time has been wasted.

As Gary starts all over, the rest

of the team gets fuel injected.

- Wow.

[electric guitar]

- Are these going in soon or what?

- Yep.

- Okay alright

Because I can't put my fuel cell in.

- Okay.

- You know what I mean?

Like we're dead

until this goes in the car pretty much.

- Okay.

- All right.

- We're reaching

where we gotta stop until the hydraulics go in.

- [Voiceover] The hydraulic lifts aren't holding up Santa.

They're holding up the team

so the father and son get cracking up.

- Up

We got one going a little fast, don't we?

- We're gonna tie 'em both together.

That'll work.

- [Voiceover] Jeff finishes shortening the drive shaft

for their mini car.

- This one we need.

Drive shaft

- [Voiceover] And body drop tries

to spread some holiday cheer in the garage.

- Hey, those are some pretty good welds.

is that all you?

- Pretty ugly actually,

but they're big and fat and strong.

- [Voiceover] Garth McCrohan is a custom fabricator

and welder who practices old school techniques unknown

to most modern welders.

- I've always been fascinated by it.

Despite his down to earth approach,

His crafted components

that have shot into space on the shuttle.

He figures his special skills will put him

on the map someday.

- Everything's become computer driven.

When anarchy takes over and nobody knows how

to do anything by hand anymore,

I figured that's where I'm gonna become famous.

- [Voiceover] The hydraulic arms are completed

and brought to their final resting place.

Gary's all by his lonesome to deal with building Santa.

- Yeah, because Santa is so much bigger now.

I'm probably gonna have to lay him out in two pieces.

Maybe even three.

Legs, boots, torso, head

went from an easy one to a a little tougher one now

- [Voiceover] Just when Gary's feeling

as alone as the ninth reindeer

that didn't make Santa's gut.

He's got the team backing him up.

- Try to speed things along,

now that Santa has grown in extra 10 beats

and take probably double the time now.

- Cool dude,

I'm glad you came out here and gimme a hand.

That's gonna help a lot

- No problem, bro.

- He got a lot bigger.

- Good.

- Look at that man.

He's freaking huge now.

- Hey is this actual size or is this

- No this that's the the, the bozo one.

This is the size right here

- And man,

- You stick welding?

- Yeah.

- Right on.

- Yeah.

- That's the first time anybody's ever stick

welding in monster garage.

- [Voiceover] As hours pass,

Gary makes progress on his new

and improved Santa

Inside, the car team can almost make their car run again.

- Drive shafts together.

Welded drive, shaft works.

We're all set there.

We got that back in.

So the car should move under its own power

as soon as we get the fuel cell.

- Yeah.

- Does Carl live longer than Jesse does?

- [Voiceover] The second build day is finally through.

So the team sneaks a peak at the bigger and better Santa.

Still working on it.

- This would work if the shaft was coming out

this way.

Just weld the gear on this shaft here and then have it

and then have it sh**ting back the other way

for the to work

- Yep.

- For as much as we're gonna be turning,

The forklift steering column

with its counter-rotating gearbox is attached

to a series of pulleys.

Then to a chef running back into the Firebirds original

rack and pinion steering.

It'll drive like a forklift,

but since the gearbox reverses all directions,

the wheels will steer the opposite way their turn.

- Yeah right.

There's cool then.

So if you wanna make a little plate quarter inch,

we'll just run tubing straight up off of the air.

to make some progress on Santa

Ian starts to weld his super cylinders

and Jeff is putting the scavenge throttle cable to use.

- Since we're in a parade, we decided

to rig up a hand throttle

using our favorite little skulls and crossbones deal.

Now we're gonna mount this linked through a cable back

to the throttle so that he can actually just set the speed

by hand and it'll maintain a steady speed that way

- [Voiceover] The further Ian gets into his cannons,

the more difficult they're becoming.

- Yeah, it's a little more work than I thought,

but I've never built one before.

So we're just gonna build sort of a backup cylinder

so when the air comes up,

it'll be sitting in a smaller cylinder here.

There'll be a like a quick valve right there

and when the valve fires all the air that's in there,

I'll just fire out the end.

Harder, sometimes more fun

- [Voiceover] Like the little kitties do on the 24th,

The team is setting their sights on the next morning.

- Tomorrow we still gotta get a seat build in here.

- Yeah.

- I gotta finish the throttle.

- We gotta get stirring mounted.

It rolls out the door.

That's the way we'll have to do it.

By 10 o'clock at the latest it goes out.

And then we're working around you

- [Voiceover] A lot for only two days left

and it looks like Santa himself may be this team's

Grinch who stole Christmas.

- [Voiceover] Jesse's not asking for too much this year.

- I just wanna scare a kid tomorrow.

- [Voiceover] But the team struggles

to find their inner route up

and make the float fly.

- I didn't come here to freak in,

put out a piece of crap.

- [Voiceover] Can Christmas really

bring out the gentle Jesse?

- It's my goal in life

to have everybody like me.

- That ain't gonna work.

♪ Monster, Monster Garage

- [Voiceover] There's only two shopping days left

on this build.

- Pressure's on to get this thing out of 10 o'clock

so we can get the body mounted.

So time's getting short.

- I expect it out of here about 11:30, 12:00

- You know what, we can go outside with it if we

Let's do it.

- Okay.

- Watch out there.

- [Voiceover] Surprising their built team counterparts.

The car crew met their deadline and moves outside.

[Rock music playing]

- Woo-hoo.

- It steers really well.

- [Voiceover] Now that Ian's delivered the car part

of the float ahead

of Gary's pessimistic predictions.

He turns his attention to sh**ting off some holiday treats.

- That's a candy cannon my friend.

Simple as can be.

Air in, open the solenoids,

all the air out candy everywhere.

- [Man] So all you gotta do is fill it up.

- You'll just have to fill it up,

pack it in a little bit and boom.

This is the nitrogen cylinder

that's gonna power this air cannon

right here.

Good to go.

[laughs]

- That's perfect.

- That's awesome.

Thanks to us,

there'll be new float rules.

All spectators must wear helmets.

- [Voiceover] Now the only thing

that could sink this build is the float.

- I still gotta sculpt the head, boots,

Santa's gotta have a hat.

Still quite a bit of work to do.

- [Voiceover] Jesse comes outside to see

how this skeletal Santa will get its skin.

- Covered with

windows, windows, windows, windows.

Gary didn't think would be necessary

to collect his tools

by the end of the week.

- You don't think we can do it if all of us?

what my main concern is is

that I want it to be a nice figure, man.

- [Voiceover] The fourth build day is nearly over

as the sun sets in the monster junkyard.
