A team of five people with mechanical, fabricating, or modifying expertise was assembled to modify a vehicle into a "monster machine."

Post by bunniefuu »

- [Narrator] Okay, monster steam heads,

there's a car pulling into the garage that wants

to be a train, Jesse's training to be a conductor,

and there's a kid who's trying to be Jesse.

- Oh, monster head rock.

- [Host] This week's challenge, take the coolest Dodge

to hold a Hemi, a 2005 340 horsepower Magnum RT

[train honks] and make it a super sleek

super train. [engine revs]

The rules, [upbeat rock music]

the car must appear to be stock.

The team can spend no more than $5,000 for parts.

[train horn blares]

Jesse and his crew have seven days and nights.

On the first day, they design, for the next five,

they build, and on the seventh day, they hit the rails.

[train horn blows]

If successful, they walk away with a $3,400 set

of Mac tools, and the clock starts now.

[tires squeal] [metal clatters]

[upbeat jazz music]

For this week's design, Jesse called on train expert,

Joe Nemmer, who knows more than just steam engines,

Tony Settelmeyer, a hydraulics guru

that can make anything move, and Kenny Youngblood,

one of the hottest automotive artists in the world.

- So we've been wanting to do something

with trains for a while.

You know, I'm like a total train guy.

I just dig trains.

I dig the whole mechanical metal aspect of it.

There's a lot of trucks like pickup trucks

that have like the little outriggers that could go on tracks

and stuff like that, but I wanna make a cool car

that could go on a train track against a locomotive.

[harp strums] [chimes ring]

- [Host] Since the early days of car racing,

a big race against these mechanical monstrosities

has been a dream, and Jesse's no exception.

- Well, when The forties and fifties,

they had some luxury cars that were set up to ride

on the rails to get the railroad officials out there,

and those were pretty classy operations.

- [Jesse] Really?

- Yeah, nothing's gonna beat this one.

[upbeat rock music]

What do I do?

I'm a state employee at the Rail Town State Park,

which to be a state employee

and play with trains is unbelievable.

My specific job there is track foreman.

We have 105-year-old steam railroad

that's been basically continuous operations since 1897.

Everybody needs to find their place in life.

I enjoy it a lot.

- [Host] With an expert like Joe Nemmer,

the design has endless possibilities.

- I mean, I'd kind of like to do the train wheels coming

out kind of slick so everything's pretty concealed.

- The width of the wheel is what's gonna determine

if you can hide it.

- What's the width of the standard set of rails?

- Well, four foot eight and a half inch side.

- Let me go measure it right now,

'cause that kind of will be a sticking point.

[intense rock music]

- [Host] Since America's railroad tracks

are an exact four foot eight and a half inches wide,

Jesse checks to see how the Magnum's highway wheels

will line up.

- It's way too wide.

I can already see right now, maybe.

Ooh, my dial caliper eyes are wrong.

We're good.

- [Host] The Magnum's tires are the perfect width

to drive directly on the tracks, and behind them,

there's plenty of space to hide mini train wheels

that will guide the car on the rails.

Now how to make the hidden wheels move?

- You wanna lift those wheels all the way

off the track, right?

- Yeah, hydraulic or like a actuator.

- No, hydraulic.

- Yeah, I'd rather be hydraulic than it's more power,

you know? - Those actuators are weak.

- The hardest thing about this build

is getting the rail wheels concealed.

- How about putting a cow catcher on?

- You could do and bring it around where it would cover

up your wheels.

- Let's just keep it all dark and black and train-looking.

- [Host] This design is ready to pull out of the station.

All aboard!

[Jesse imitates train horn]

[marker squeaks] [upbeat country music]

[train horn blows] - The magnum will stay

completely stock except for a monstered-out cow catcher.

Underneath will be hidden axles

with small size train wheels,

and when lowered by hydraulic rams,

will act as a guide for the Magnum.

Finally, it'll go from cherry to charcoal

and even Jesse's g*n-coating wild west ancestor

won't be able to keep up.

[train chugs]

Day two, let's meet the train technicians.

[dramatic rock music] [track bell rings]

Returning for the build is Tony Settelmeyer,

hydraulics expert from Corona, California,

[tools ratchet] [Ryan slaps his butt]

Ryan Doty, Dodge engine performance specialist

from Montclair, California,

[tools ratchet]

from Houston, Texas comes Welder Fabricator,

Alton E. Burkhalter.

[Alton kicks wall] [tools ratchet]

Robert W. Morris III from Santa Rosa, California

is a mechanical engineer and total train expert,

[tools ratchet]

and Joe Nemmer is returning for the build

as train expert numero uno.

- So basically we're gonna make this thing going

on train tracks.

Who's the Dodge guy?

- Right here. - You?

- You gotta be careful with the wiring.

They got some new stuff on there.

It's just out of hand.

If we start disconnecting stuff with the battery connected,

it's going throw up check engine lights.

- We're gonna do a cow catcher in front

that'll come out wider for the track

with its four foot eight inches on inside-to-inside

of the train rails.

Let's get after it and see what happens.

- [Host] Before the tear out begins,

Jesse wants to get a look under the hood

of the coolest Dodge to hold the legendary Hemi engine.

- [Jesse] Take that off.

I wanna see it.

- [Ryan] Other areas to get you home by adding fuel.

[chime rings]

- [Host] Jesse leads the team

on a delicate monster tear out.

- If I only had a brain.

We're gonna move it forward,

'cause all this is gonna be wheel stuff

to come down on the train tracks.

- [Host] And Train Expert Joe has got secretary duty

to track down smaller sized train wheels,

not something you can just buy off the shelf.

- I'm looking for a set of four cast wheels, 10 inch,

High rail wheels, probably 10 or 12 inch.

I'm trying to get some, you know, a little heads up.

We're doing some measurements.

[tool whirs]

- [Tony] As far as tear outs go that I've seen,

this is delicate. [laughs]

- Very dainty, lots of plastic.

- Yeah, baby, yeah. [throws car part]

The plastic parts are just not satisfying

to throw 'em across the shop.

They don't land with a nice clunk.

- Well, this one's gonna leak.

- It actually has metal on it.

That's weird.

What is this material that a new car's made out of us?

Wow.

- Now the car's a bit lighter, [inquisitive rock music]

but how does the team start fabricating

when they ain't got no wheels?

- No good news yet.

A lot of the yards close, already, for the day.

I think the largest wheel we're gonna come up

with is 14 inch in diameter.

The bigger the wheel, the more likely you're gonna stay

on that track.

- Yeah, if we can just find out what size they are,

we can do the mockup in cardboard.

- Do we know what size the axle's going to be?

- Without specific dimensions, [clunky electronic music]

it's difficult to accurately move forward.

- We got somewhere where we can get those wheels from

or should we make 'em or? [intimidating rock music]

- Machine 'em out, man, make 'em out of solid.

- I got a CNC lathe.

- [Robert] Huh.

- It's a thought.

- Yeah, I mean, turning wheels out of blanks

is not a real big deal.

It's just, that is a good eight hours to 10 hours worth

of hardcore machining.

- [Host] Machining wheels from scratch could take days.

So the two train experts continue their quest for wheels

while work on the hydraulics begins on paper.

- I'm putting a hydraulic circuit on paper.

I don't want to be the one everybody's pointing at

at the last minute.

It's like, well, all this other stuff works.

What happened to the hydraulic guy?

[mysterious hip hop music] I'm a hydraulic guy.

The boat industry's kind of where I'm trying to focus.

The America's Cup experience, well,

I was thinking it's a sailboat.

What the hell kind of hydraulics they have on there?

But it's a pretty elaborate system they have on there.

So what we did is we put a package together,

and we actually won the America's Cup.

I don't refer to myself as an expert.

I think that's a label for someone who's, I don't know.

That's not me.

I'm a hydraulic guy.

The only thing that's really up in the air is we have

to work out our wheel size so we can know

how far the cylinder has to travel.

- While others plan, [intense rock music]

one builder is ready to see sparks in the monster garage.

- We're getting antsy.

We're standing at idle right now,

and we need to get something done.

[tools bang]

- [Host] To keep moving, Ryan cuts out the front bumper

to make room for Tony's hydraulic ram.

- We won't throw this, 'cause it might go back on the car.

- [Host] And train tracker, Joe, has an update after hours

of searching for wheels.

- I did locate four wheels in St. Louis,

and the guy's willing to get 'em to the airport first thing

in the morning, but that means we won't get 'em

till the following morning.

He gave me absolute dimensions of the thing,

and so we could start working.

We know what's coming the next morning.

Day two, first thing in the morning,

we should have the dimensions, and we can start fabing up.

[upbeat rock music] - After one day,

the team has not yet built up any steam,

but they have managed to reduce the value

of this cherried out ride.

The world's fastest conventional train is in France,

cruising at 325 miles an hour.

To run the entire globe, this speed train would have

to roll nonstop for 91 straight days.

♪ Monster, Monster Garage

[dramatic western music] Day three begins.

[train crashes]

Joe puts in the order for rail wheels

and tries to get their precise dimensions.

- [Tony] No wheels, no train.

- No wheels, no train.

We need that right now.

- Is it possible to get some measurements off of those?

- Trying to fabricate 'em from solid pieces,

that would really tax our schedule and our time.

- He's guaranteed tomorrow morning on those wheels.

[door bell rings]

- [Host] The wheels are on route,

but the train expert has hydraulic concerns.

[upbeat rock music]

Commercial freightliner wheels have a protruding lip

or a flange to keep them inside the rails.

Also, their massive weight stabilizes the system

against the track, but for this lightweight build,

Tony's hydraulic downward force will have

to hold the rail wheels to the track

and the system will have to flex in case the car rocks back

and forth, and Joe's skeptical.

- I can't tell you how imperative it is

to keep those flanges down.

- The whole system is attached to the car by three points.

Three points cause a system to pivot and move.

It will flex.

It will. - Flex?

- It will flex.

- [Tony] All in favor.

- [Ryan] Go ahead and do it.

- I'm not gonna cry and go home,

but I need to state my opinion.

- I understand.

- Okay. [baby cries]

Seems to be working well together.

I'm probably the most abrasive one here.

[intense rock music] - With dimensions

for the incoming wheels in hand,

the team starts building the pivoting arms

that will mount from the car's frame to the axle.

- We're trying to get a rubber-mounted bushing

to give it a little flex, and right now,

I'm having a hard time finding that.

Lemme see what I can come up with real quick.

[dramatic rock music]

- [Host] When improvising on a build,

there's no better place to start than the monster junkyard.

- I think we're gonna use this portion here

of this pipe and we just gotta take 'em off.

- [Host] While Ryan and Joe pillage,

the welder Texan beefs up the bumper

to mount the front hydraulic cylinder.

[solder hisses]

- This will be the cutout for the cylinder.

There'll be a cylinder that's gonna run right in here in

between the bumper and the radiator.

[pipe clatters]

- [Host] Ryan's done stealing parts from the junky yard

- Freebies, zip, zero, nada.

- [Host] and quickly hacks out the salvaged bushings.

- With the parts we took off the other car,

I used the bushings in the center,

and I made a new bushing for it,

and this is gonna be our mount for the front wheels will be

out here on an axle, and this will be able to rotate up.

[intense rock music] [solder hisses]

[tool hitch]

Something like that.

I'm a Viper tech for Dodge.

I've been working for the same dealership for 10 years now.

I've been a Viper tech for nine of those years.

Horsepower to rate ratio in that Viper is just incredible.

[car engine revs]

Everything I have is yellow.

Yellow's my favorite color.

I have a yellow boat, a yellow dune buggy.

My toolbox is yellow.

I'm lucky enough to have some toys.

[kart engine revs]

It'll never work.

[solder hisses]

- [Host] Jesse rolls into the garage.

After inspecting the team's progress, he's impressed.

- I think we've got enough knowledge just

by the brief time I've talked to him

that I think we can make it work.

We can definitely do this.

It's doable.

- [Host] Then he gets a delivery sure to wake the neighbors.

[train horn blares] [dramatic rock music]

- [Ryan Voice Over] Freebie, zip, zero, nada.

- The hydraulics are here.

Ah, these are the hydraulic cylinders

that are gonna lift and lower the axles.

This is the one for the back,

and this is the one for the front.

This is what our directional valves

and our control circuit's gonna mount on that.

Good directional valve, crossover relief valves,

little teeny power unit.

Look at that, 1900 bucks, and that's with my discounts.

[Tony chuckles] [intense rock music]

- [Host] Hydraulics that will force

out nearly a thousand pounds of pressure can't be mounted

without brackets, strong brackets.

- We need a bracket to mount the cylinder in the front.

All we have here is half inch material,

which wasn't heavy enough for that portion of the bracket

or to hold that much force.

So that I haven't finished cleaning it up yet,

but it's all welded together, and when it's cleaned up,

it'll be a solid piece of more than one inch material.

[upbeat rock music]

- [Host] Alton impresses everyone in the shop with some

of the strongest welds ever done on a time crunch build.

- That's a vertical up-weld.

When I'm going up, I have complete control on my heat.

It's not going anywhere.

Put a little monster weld on there.

to work steady every day and think about stuff instead

of relentlessly cutting it.

- All right, man. - Let's get outta here.

- Yeah, man.

[intense rock music] - At the end of day three,

the builders leave hoping for an early morning delivery

of rail wheels.

[train horn blares]

Day number four finds these men relaxed

and full of confidence.

- I think today should be pretty productive.

We've got wheels coming

- Hopefully. - in hopefully about 10:30.

- Definitely want to spend a lot of time on the cowcatcher,

'cause that's gonna be like one of the feature changes.

Other than that, the car's pretty much gonna look stock,

which is a cool look anyway.

- [Host] The cow catcher may be this build's beauty,

but Tony's hydraulic system is the brawn.

[groovy rock music] [bobcat roars]

- Kind of scoping out where I want

to put these accumulators.

An accumulator's a method of storing hydraulic energy

where it also works as a shock absorber

or a dampening system for a hydraulic system.

If the car moves up, then there's hydraulic pressure

- [Host] The morning is bearing down the tracks,

but where are the wheels?

- I'm not gonna be a hundred percent confident

until I actually see FedEx pull up and drop off wheels.

It's 11 o'clock. [dramatic western music]

- [Host] and then runs hydraulic hoses to the front
