- [Narrator] This week's challenge,
an all-girl built team turns a 1975 Chevy Camaro
into the mother of all dirt track race cars.
The rules, the vehicle must appear to be super stock.
The team has 5,000 bucks for parts.
Jesse and his crew have seven days and nights.
On the first day, they design.
For the next five, they build.
And on the seventh day, they dirt race.
If successful, they'll walk away with a $4,000 set
of Mac's hottest tools.
And the clock starts now.
[dirt splats]
This smoking Camaro might be red,
but at almost 30 years old, it's far from cherry.
Jesse's not exactly running on all cylinders either.
He's still recovering from a NASCAR crash
that has him hobbling on crutches.
[energetic music]
These designing women hope
to give the monster that feminine touch.

- [Jesse] Hello. How you doing?
- So, you kind of got a bad taste in your mouth
about this whole thing then, right?
- No, it's gonna be just fine. [group chuckles]
All-girl teams rule.
- [Narrator] If the all-girl theme seems a little familiar,
that's because it is.
Jesse's been down that dirt road before,
and the experience has muddied his vision.
- Well, you better get outta my face then.
- Why don't you get me the [bell dings]
outta your face then?
- [Narrator] After wasting most of their week,
our first all-girl build team scrambled
to get their engine running in the final hours
of the build.
- Something's off, way off.
- [Jesse] The Demolition Derby car would've been better
if they'd never touched it.
It would've worked better. [group chuckles]
- And just left it? - Yeah.
Well, this should be a good build.
Figuring out what we have to do.
I mean, just basically take this
and make it into a race car,
which is pretty straightforward.
You know, motor and trans swap,
full NASCAR roll cage, side impact, you know,
with cross bracing with a dash bar.
Do a collapsible steering column in it.
We'll gut it.
Get rid of all the crap we don't need.
- Right. - We should probably
pull up some rules - Yeah.
- And build it so it'll fit
- Yeah. - right in one class.
- They have the Street Stock class, which is pretty stock,
or they have like the Super Street class, which would be,
we can do a little bit more to the car than just,
you know, the stock.
Well. - Let's run Super Street.
- Okay. - That sounds
like the coolest.
- [Kathy] I think that Pikes Peak when you hit the dirt,
and you felt the thing just doing the sliding.
- Oh yeah. - That's what it's like
all the time. - Yeah.
[car revving]
- Are you guys staying around for the build?
- Yeah, I am, she's not. - I'm not.
- All right, good.
Then you'll probably end up
driving it. - Yeah.
- [Kathy] Oh God.
- Fun.
- [Jesse] I think that's it.
I mean, it's not, this is all tried and true stuff
that we've done a bunch of times on "Monster Garage."
It's just gonna be a lot of labor, you know,
doing everything in five days and being all girls.
- [Kathy] Yeah, what's your point about that?
- Yeah, we're a little confused.
- Where are we going?
- I'm just worried. - Yeah, what's the point?
Don't be worried.
Everything will be fine. - Good.
- [Sherri] We're gonna change your attitude
about women building things.
- All right. - You're not gonna have
a bad attitude about it.
- I'm not, I don't have a bad attitude.
I'm just class, I'm just- - You're just thinking
we're stupid here. - I've been conditioned
to feel the way I feel.
- Well, we're gonna un-condition you.
- Yeah.
- [Narrator] They'll start the unconditioning
by gutting the car to lighten the load.
Then clear room for the racing gear,
a seat, steering column, and fire suppression.
They'll relocate the battery and add a roll cage.
It's out with the old and in with the new,
as the Camaro will get a fuel cell, four new wheels,
and a rebuilt 350 horsepower V8 under the hood
that'll give them all the go they need come race day.
[energetic rock music]
[truck rumbles]
Day two.
From out of the fog, our sirens emerge.
Monster Garage's second all-girl built team.

- Hello.
So we're just gonna build a dirt track race car.
I mean first things first.
We'll gut this thing and make it light.
Get rid of all the interior, motor trans out.
I got a motor coming.
Gonna have to do a full roll cage.
All the glass has gotta come out.
Clearance it for the tires.
It's just a lot of work.
As a good goal today is get everything apart
and get it up on jack stands with the motor and trans out.
- Nice. - Are we gonna make this
more towards the rules or no?
- I think we should. - Because the rules
are real strict.
- [Jesse] Let's make it so we can actually race it,
and see how, see how good you are.
- Yeah. [laughs] - Yeah.
- Let's get with it, with it, with it.
[energetic music]
- [Narrator] They waste no time getting started
by trimming away at the car.
And Jesse's already feeling punchy.
- You sure you know what you're doing?
Aren't you guys supposed to be wearing miniskirts and stuff?
[Tiffany laughs]
They're all working.
They're not scratching each other's eyes out. [snarls]
[energetic music]
- It's gonna be awesome when we're done with it.
- [Narrator] There's no glass ceiling
in the Monster Garage,
and as far as this race car's concerned,
[Emily grunts]
there's no glass windshield either.
- Watch the ankles. [chuckles]
[hammer tapping]
For the record, I don't do glass for a living.
- Me neither.
- [Narrator] She may not do glass for a living,
but for Tiffany, this is still familiar territory.
- I work full-time at Four Wheel Parts, nights,
and then during the days, whenever they need me,
I work at Monster Garage.
I run parts, I clean, whatever they need done.
- [Narrator] But make no mistake about it,
Tiffany's here for the same reason as everybody else,
the tools.
- It's hard to buy tools
because there's not much space at my parents' house.
I live with my parents.
I don't wanna say that.
[car revs] [tires squeal]
[upbeat music]
- [Narrator] Is that a new builder in the garage,
here to help her fellow feminine wrenchers?
No, wait, it's Bodydrop dressed for a date with a monster.
[upbeat music] [group laughing]

- [Narrator] With the interior outed,
it's time to butcher the belly of the beast.
- Let's get the zoo, zoo, zoo, zoo.
[tool buzzing]
- Nice. Good job.

- [Narrator] For this car to compete,
it'll need some help under the hood.
- Oh, this motor's definitely seen a lot better days
than this one.
- [Narrator] They pull the Chevy stock motor and tr*nny
to make room for more muscle.
[energetic music]
- [Team Member] Hold on a second.
We're good.
They're not connected.
- Pick it up.
[energetic music]
- [Narrator] The engine is history and so is day two.
The girls really cleaned house today,
and they've got the gutted Camaro to prove it,
but there's a long unpaved road ahead,
and this build is far from in the can.
Monster Garage factoid.
General Motors factory spit out 145,770 Camaros in 1975
with 16 choices of color.
Pink was not one of them.

- [Narrator] Day three.
While the girls are waiting
to dress up this race car with a new engine and tr*nny,
they decide they'll work with what they've got
and accessorize.
- We can do the fuel cell, we can do the battery.
- Back glass. - We can do
the fire extinguishers.
We can get everything mounted on the inside,
get the back glass out.
Okay, exhaust.
- This seems like the big obstacle today is getting
this fuel cell together. - Level and strapped down
and then figuring out the fuel lines
and the battery. - Fuel lines. Yep.
But we need to add- - Waiting on parts
forces the girls to focus.
Trouble is they're all focusing on the same thing.
- So our idea back here is we're gonna put,
we need to add one of those square tubes right here
to bring this up.
Put one more here to reinforce it.
- Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
Start over. What are you gonna do now?
- We need to level this to put our fuel cell in.
tell you - What we should do,
which would be a lot easier,
just take whatever, half inch or whatever,
and just make two straps,
and let it sit right in the middle
so it's level all the way across.
- That's what we're planning to do,
but we need to put a steel bar here to level this out.
- [Narrator] This is usually the time for Jesse
to light a fire under the build team.
But this week, even Jesse's flame is burning low.
- Sick.
- Don't be sick.
- Oh, I feel like-
Could my life get any more difficult?
Like sick, I can't walk.
- And you have girls working.
- Yeah, in an all-girl build.
[Tiffany laughs] God hates me.
- God dang.
- It's from doing this
every day. [thunder booms]
- [Narrator] With the rest of the team forging ahead,
Carolyn doubles back and fesses up for messing up yesterday.
- I was so excited yesterday to get to work
that I just disconnected everything from the engine,
not paying attention to where it was coming from.
So, while it's still fresh in my memory,
I thought I would go through and identify
which wires are which.
This is gonna be perfect.
When it comes in, it's just gonna be smooth sailing.
[graphic booms]
- [Narrator] You can't really blame Carolyn
for being anxious.
Spending a week in the Monster Garage
is harder than it looks.
- [Carolyn] It's a multidimensional experience.
It's not just the project.
It's coming to Los Angeles or Long Beach.
It's meeting Jesse James.
It's the amount of introspection
that goes on when you're working on a car
versus when you're working on a car with a camera,
you know, a foot away from your face.
It's a totally different world.
I mean it's, yeah, you're totally self-conscious.
[upbeat music]
- [Narrator] The Camaro's curved glass
is worth a pretty penny.
Candice wants to remove it
and sell it to build on their budget.
[glass clinks] - Yep.
- [Narrator] Or not.
- So much for saving that one. [chuckles]

- [Narrator] Emily starts on the platform
that will level their fuel cell.
Working with women is a welcome change
for this former marine and forklift mechanic.
- This is pretty much like that except for it's all girls,
because I was usually the only girl in the shop.
This is actually kind of nice, you know?
It's, I mean it's cleaner.
Guys are pigs.
- [Narrator] She's a fan of working with other women,
but Emily's not exactly what you'd call a fan
of "Monster Garage."
- I really don't like the show.
It's not very technical.
It really isn't.
It's nothing but a bunch of stupid drama.
It's just another reality show.
It's the Survivor, Barnum and Bailey's,
American Idol combination.
You people are just a couple average joes doing your job
on this stupid reality show.
This is what you're supposed to do.
You're paid to be [bell dings].
Everyone's gotta be something.
Some people are [bell dings], some people are schizo,
some people are weird.
Whatever.
I don't even watch the show. I don't care.
Do you want me to do that over?
I'm melting holes in this.
- [Narrator] As Emily struggles welding
in the fuel cell platform, Candice helps Sherri in
with the groceries, their battery, power cable,
and two fire extinguishers.
[energetic music] [hammer banging]
Then goes to work on a battery box
to secure the transplanted power supply.
[energetic music] [tool sizzling]
- Okay.
[energetic music] [tool buzzing]
- [Narrator] What better to help the girls try
to pull this monster together than the intangible force
of Monster Magnet?
- When I worked for Boyd, I drove the truck to Sturgis
all the way there and all the way back with only one CD.

- [Narrator] Monster Magnet has the girls rocking.
Sherri runs fuel and power lines
while Carolyn gently removes the steering column.
[energetic music]
And Candice and Emily start cutting bars
that will form the roof of their roll cage.
- Okay, now we got this one.
[energetic music]
- [Narrator] The race car's roll cage will literally need
to shoulder the weight of this build.
If the car should flip or crash,
it's the only thing protecting the driver,
and it's thoroughly inspected
before each race to make sure it's ready to roll.
[energetic music]
Tiffany pounds a few corners into a strip of metal
that'll secure their fuel cell.
[energetic music]
They bolt in the straps before giving it the final test.
Let's see if it'll close still.
- It'll shut.
- A perfect fit. - Yeah.
- [Narrator] They've struck a blow for women everywhere
and successfully hidden a lot of junk
in this monster's trunk.
The finish line is still a long way off,
but the girls end the day walking tall.
They've got three more days before this build is lights out.
[upbeat music]
Day four.
[energetic music]
The girls enter the garage and pick up where they left off,
with lots to do.
- Yeah.
[energetic music]
- The radiator. - Support.
- We need to put the fire extinguishers in.
- Right. - Right.
- And the tr*nny. - And tr*nny tomorrow morning?
- [Sherri] If we're going to, we need to probably do today
is reinforce the front rear bumper.
- [Carolyn] Okay.
- That's us. - Yeah, they can do
some of that. Yeah, if you guys
just cut it for us, we can do all that.
The whole steering column issue that we gotta address.
- [Team Member] Have we got any steering column yet?
- No, we're gonna get it today.
- We can cut it. - We gotta mount
tires and wheels.
Gotta mount the tires on the wheels.
- Right. - So basically,
the entire car - Yeah.
- is what I'm seeing on this board right here.
We should keep together on this
'cause I don't wanna waste any time today.
- Yeah. - They've got a plan,
and they know what to do.
Now all they need to do is get it done.

- [Narrator] Candice helps Emily brace the roof
of their roll cage in place.
Sort of. - If you want.
- Let me just get this. - Yeah,
'cause it'll hold it nice.

- That's okay, I always wanted a concussion.
- I thought you guys were holding it.
- Well, apparently I wasn't holding it good enough.

- [Narrator] They're bending the tubing
that will anchor their roof to the Camaro's subframe.
It's coming together quite well,
considering it's the first one either of them have built.
- I'm a first timer for this.
I've done fabrication to 'em where you have
to link your tubes and stuff like that.
Never a full, from scrap.
There's a lot of guys you can buy a full roll cage
for these race cars, and then you just bolt them in.
But it's a lot more fun to make it yourself.
- [Narrator] As a body technician,
Candice spends her days ironing the wrinkles
out of crashed-up cars.
- I am currently working at Abbott Street Autobody
as a body technician.
I've been there for about four years now.
Is I can take this car that's coming smashed up,
and when it leaves it looks brand new again, and I did it.
It's just like, whoa.
You know, it's an awesome feeling.
We're getting closer.
- [Narrator] The Camaro's cage is well underway,
but things are looking a little rough around the edges.
[hammer clanking]
- There's one laying on top of his car.
- You want a hand with it? - There you go,
right behind you.
- [Narrator] Bodydrop steps in to deliver some bad news.
Jesse's called in sick today.
- Hey!
Can I have your attention?
- What's up?
- Jesse's not gonna be here today.
He's not feeling good.
So, just to let you guys all know.
- I don't want him here.
I don't want him
- We don't wanna be sick. - coughing all over us.
I don't want any germs.
I don't care who they're from.
- I just wanted
to let you guys know. - But Sherri was hoping
he'd be delivering something else.
- Where are my parts?
- [Narrator] They're off on their own for the day.
But will they miss Jesse?
That depends on who you ask.
- It's just hard 'cause he's responsible
for getting the engine, the transmission,
and so a lot of those large parts are totally in his hands,
and we don't have a lot of information on them.
- No, I'm, you know, we've got the rules written down.
You know what I mean?
He can, what does he come in here to do anyway?
Be famous?
He can do that anywhere, okay?
We've got [bell dings] to do.
- [Narrator] Bodydrop wheels in the wheels,
but there's just no pleasing some builders.
- Cool. Did you bring any other parts?
Or no?
- [Narrator] With their racing rims from Circle in hand,
they start adjusting the Camaro's axle.
To fix the wheels onto the old Chevy axle,
they'll need to pound out the studs and drill bigger holes
that'll match their racing studs and wheels.
- The rules are that you gotta run
at least five eighths studs.
This is the actual size that we need
to run is five eighths studs.
This is what was in it.
- Seven sixteenths. - Yeah.
- [Narrator] While Carolyn bores larger holes
into the drums, Sherri unwraps the fire extinguishers.
She wants to make sure if this monster crashes
it ain't gonna burn.
- [Sherri] They have to be a minimum of five pounds.
But it's pretty good for safety I guess.
I am a CEO of an auto parts business
in the outskirts of Chicago.
And then I just recently purchased a racetrack in Kentucky,
and I drive a race car.
[cars revving]
- [Narrator] Sherri not only runs the track
and races her car, she wrenches on it as well.
- [Sherri] I do primarily 90% of all the work
on my race car.
I think that women need to show men
that, hey, we can do this.
[cars revving]
- [Narrator] Sherri adds the rule-specific trunk pins
to their monster in the making.
[hammer banging]

- [Narrator] And Emily puts the finishing touches
on the first roll cage she and Candice have ever built.
With the engine, transmission, and Jesse all scheduled
to arrive in the morning, the girls are hoping
by this time tomorrow, they'll be seeing the Camaro
in a whole new light.
Monster Garage factoid.
More than 300,000 tons of dirt finds its way
onto public roads in the United States every day.
It takes 4,000 tons to build a dirt racing track.
That means there's enough dirt on US roads
to construct 75 new tracks every day.

They skip the coffee talk today and get right to work.
The rules say the roll cage has to be strong,
but luckily for Emily,
they don't say anything about it needing to look good.

They're filling up nice.
[energetic music]
- [Narrator] Tiffany tries to get ahead of the game
by using their old engine as a mockup.
But some of her teammates
don't think the effort is worthwhile.
- It's useless work.
- What is? - To go out there
and take the engine apart and use it as a mockup.
We're saying forget even doing that
while we're waiting on the engine
to get it done the right way.
- Yeah. - Why do work twice?
What's the point of doing all that work?
That's a lot of work.
- [Narrator] After scrapping her engine plans,
Tiffany retrieves a race car essential.
- Hey girls!
Got our steering column.
- [Narrator] Should the car crash,
this collapsible steering column from Townsin Racing
is sure to be forgiving.
- This is a pretty piece of machinery like that.
So it collapses if you were to get impacted.
- [Narrator] After a day and a half,
Jesse's back from his battle with the flu.
- Hey, the motor show up yet?
- No. - Today, for sure.
- New one they say. - Hopefully.
- Okay. - It'll get here.
- We're just kind of, you know, out there until we get it,
so we know what we're dealing with.
- [Narrator] It's not just the engine
that has Jesse worried.
- I'm gonna have to go over these welds on the cage.
I don't think it'll pass tech.
[tense music]
I just, I'm sitting here thinking what I need to do to it
to make it so it passes tech so it's safe.
- Rip it out? - That one
I think is gonna be cut out.
- [Narrator] His initial reaction is
to fix the clumpy welds and replace a few bars.
After a closer look, he realizes it'll be better
and easier to rebuild the cage than to repair it.
Now for the hard part, breaking the news.
- You think she's gonna be mad
if I tell her we have to cut this out?
- I think they'll be more disappointed in themselves.
- Well. - Thinking they didn't
do it right. - I just, I don't think,
I don't think it'll pass tech.
- I hear you.
- I didn't do the big fat ugly ones. No.
- You didn't?
- I keep telling her to use a higher heat on it
and a lot of wire, but she's scared
'cause she's burning through.
- Just for safety wise,
because if you put it on its lid,
and that's a shearing point where it'll break,
and a bar come and hit you in the head.
- So what do you suggest?
- I think we should cut it out and do it all over again.
You guys get the seat mounted today.
Get everything else done,
and we'll build the roll cage around it.
We can have all the fun we want and everything,
but if she goes out and gets hit and gets-
- Yeah and hit.
- Then it's not good.
- Yeah, that's why I was worried
about some of the welds too.

- [Jesse] I'm afraid it's not gonna pass tech,
being butted together like this,
and I'm afraid it's not safe.
I wouldn't drive it.

if you put it on your lid or something like that,
and it breaks, and this comes down into you,
you know?
You want something where the tubing's solid,
and it's gonna accept the whole load of a 3000 pound car.
- [Candice] Oh boy.
- [Narrator] These roll cage virgins try
to sport a brave face.
- Yeah, no, I'm not worried about it.
I mean, but what else are we gonna do?
Just start from ground zero,
but just cut it out and redo it.
I'm not real worried about it.
- You know what? I don't know.
I don't build roll cages for a living.
I don't intend to.
I just weld.
- [Narrator] But it's hard to hide the frustration
in tearing away almost two days of misguided work.

- I think they're all pissed off, that they think
it's like a setup, that we like, you know,
sabotaged their build by-

while Tiffany and Sherri start to square off.
- Oh, you didn't get it off?
- Not yet, but. - Are you grinding it off?
- Yeah, no, I'm gonna finish it,
but I wanna take the rest of these things out too first.

Just finish cutting it off. - But I don't want these
to break. - I know.
You won't, but if you finish cutting it off,
then it'll just slide out.

Okay, well, let's finish cutting that out,
and then we'd be done. - I'm going to dear.

She quickly severs the bolt holding the grill brace.
But cutting through the tension proves
to be a tougher task.
- Okay, well, it's out now.
- Sherri was pissed during the design.
She already had like a little bit of a tude going.
So don't kid yourself.
She's, she's already mad.
- Think today, before the end of the day,
somebody's gonna get into a confrontation.
- What's that?
- I'm sorry.
- No, don't be sorry.
Just everything I do you wanna get in the middle of it,
so if you know how to do it, then just do it.
I don't have to waste my time.
- Cool.
- No, it's you started and you stopped
and went to something else.
- Well, you start and stop things all the time.

I wasn't like gonna start. [tool buzzing]
I mean, I just stopped for two seconds,
and I was looking at something.

of her newfound aggression on a sheet of steel
that will become the rear firewall.

Candice adds fuel to the fire,
pounding the stubborn lip into submission
before Tiffany wraps the compartment up tight.
- They're all crooked.
- [Narrator] And Carolyn gets her moment in the sun
when the boys from Wayne's wheel in
the team's long-awaited 350 small block.
Sherri's got just the thing to make their motor sing,
a shiny new pair of pipes,

- [Narrator] While Carolyn tries to assemble their engine,
Sherri gets busy in the corner
with the studs, hammering the beefier ones into the axle

- [Narrator] Jesse's putting the finishing touches
on some new bars for the improved cage,
but he's starting to get the feeling
that all this effort might be for a losing cause.
- This is called pride football.
It's like when you're in a football game,
and there's only two minutes left,
and you're down by 40 points,
but you keep playing as hard as you possibly can
'cause you know you have pride.
This car isn't gonna make it.
But I still make a nice roll cage.
- [Narrator] At the end of the night,
Jesse's left doing the dirty work,
but it's the girls that are getting muddy.
They'll need their beauty sleep tonight.
Tomorrow's gonna be an ugly day.
- Go ahead, gimme some crank.
- [Big Schwag] Four days down,
and a whole lot of race car to go.
Can the garage gals fire it up,
or will they suffer a huge meltdown?

[motor rumbling]
- [Narrator] Day six, the last build day.
They know it's now or never,
so they get right to work.
To claim victory, they'll need to get the motor in
and finish the roll cage.
Wheels, seat, harness, clutch, throttle,
steering, and drive shaft, all before midnight.
[energetic music]
Candice and Sherri anchor down the seat
while Tiffany fabricates motor mounts.
[energetic music]
- [Tiffany] Fitting up the motor mount.
I'm getting less nervous.
- Hey Tiffany.
You guys gonna put the motor in today?
Or you wait 'til tomorrow?
- Tomorrow, huh?
No, today.
Yeah.
- What's up with the roll cage?
- I'm working on it.
- [Candice] You want any help with anything or?
- Yes.
As soon as I get this loop bent.
- [Candice] Okay, just let me know.
- And then you can probably do the down bars,
and then it should be ready to put your sidebars in.
- [Narrator] Emily has a transmission tip.
- I wasn't gonna smash it into that.
Oh my god.

- Ah.
- [Narrator] To get this race car off the starting line,
they marry the V8 to the tr*nny.
- That's good. - You sure?
- Yeah. Let's do it.
- [Narrator] Candice helps Jesse weld the new cage.
[energetic music]
- Looks a little bit better, yeah.
Mark it a half inch in on each side,
and then only go in that deep with the cutter.
- [Narrator] The new cage is looking great,
but this is no time for gawking.
[energetic music]
- True test.
- [Narrator] With a need for speed,
they lower in the engine
and muscle the drive shaft into position.
Once they've made the hookup, they seal the deal.
- That's better.
Weld it.
[energetic music]
- Only thing I can guarantee you at this point
is that we will be finished.
- My guess is we're gonna have it buttoned up,
and it's gonna be looking pretty good.
- [Narrator] It's hard to tell
whether the girls are confident, confused,
or just plain crazy.
- I don't wanna scratch 'em up.
I don't need you to, I want you to stand on top of 'em.
Yeah, I don't want 'em like totally jig 'em up.
- Have you took a good look at this car?
Let's just get the done.
Who cares if they're scratched?
- Can I help you?
[upbeat music]
- Go ahead.
What? - Nothing.
- [Narrator] Carolyn tries to mount the carburetor
and discovers that size matters,
and this carburetor is coming up short.
- And we can make it be late and just cut a hole.
- That's what I was thinking.
- [Narrator] With time running out,
Jesse tries his own brand of motivation.
- Hurry up.
Hurry up, hurry up, hurry up.
Did that work? [chuckles]
Hurry up.
[upbeat music]
- Jungle juice is vodka, pineapple,
well, really it's what you-
- See us, it's whatever alcohol-
- It's whatever you got in stock that night.
Makes you feel a little jungly after about an hour.
- [Narrator] If the party's down below,
it's all business up top, as Carolyn tries
to breathe some life into their carburetor.
[energetic music]
The carburetor's on, and the gas is in.
They're almost ready to go.
But some of them are more ready than others.
- I'm ready. I'm ready. I'm ready.

- [Narrator] Candice tries to get the shifter in gear.
It's not that exciting
but she's attracting quite an audience.
- Who's not doing anything right now?
- All of us. - What do you need?
- It ain't gonna make it.
Well, there's no clutch or shifter or running.
They're partying though, man.
They're having a great old time.
They think it's just like maybe they think it's like TV.
We're just gonna like magically put a month's worth
of work in it after midnight tonight
and then like cut to like, oh, ta-da.
Show them what they've won.
[buzzer beeps] Nothing.
- [Narrator] His hopes aren't high,
but Jesse's never been one to give up without a fight.
He cruises over to his shop looking for the answer
to their clutch problem.
His luck is finally starting to change.
He finds the master cylinder he's looking for.
And back at the garage, he quickly customizes brackets
to secure it to the pedal and transmission.
[energetic music]
- Right now we're trying to get the starter wire on.
We're having a problem with the bolt.
We can't find the right bolt.
Soon as we get that done,
we're gonna make sure we got power everywhere,
make sure we got fluid and everything, and start her up.
[tense music]
- [Narrator] With little more than an hour to go
before the stroke of midnight,
things in the garage ain't looking pretty.
[tense music]
- Okay, we're gonna crank it for a minute.
Let's see.
Let's see how this guy reacts.
- Lemme get these cranking. - Move.
- Okay. Let me get these.
- Screw it.
- Go for it. - You feel me?
- Do it. - Go.
- Put some brake on. - Let it keep cranking.
[starter squeaking]
- [Sherri] I got gas right over there for you.
- Stop. - Wait.
- [Narrator] It has plenty of crank
but their engine still isn't up to speed.
- Okay, let's give it a couple.
Crank it a little.
You can turn the ignition up.
[starter cranking]
- You wanna sit in front of it, you guys?
- [Narrator] Their motor is thirsting for some gas,
but the ladies are at a loss as to why.
- We're not getting gas in the back at all.
We're getting no fuel
at all. - I know.
- I mean that. - It's gotta come
outta that line and go directly into the carburetor.
- The fitting on the fuel cell,
we hooked a line to it, ran it under underneath,
put it to the fuel pump.
I mean, are we missing something?
- This fuel line is absolutely bone dry.
Gimme a crank.
Gimme a couple cranks.
[starter cranking] Yeah.
It's pumping. It's pumping.
Okay, that's fine. You can stop.
- You gotta give 'em credit though.
They're pretty upbeat.
They think they're gonna make it.
Think all of 'em are waiting for someone else to do stuff.
- You feel anything? - We're not getting anything.
You know? - I'm trying
to hear anything.
- You hear anything? - I don't.
Just keep going.
I hear it.
I dunno if I feel it.
- Can you feel it, Tiff? - I smell gas.
- What is the purpose of her feeling it?
- I don't know. - I mean, what is the point?
- Drama. Drama. Can you feel it?
- No, I mean. - Can you hear it?
- I can feel it. - Can you feel that,
where my finger is?
- I hear it. - Ah.
- Hey, I got an idea.
Let's hook it back up to the fuel pump
and try starting it again.
[firecracker sizzling]
- [Narrator] Jesse tries to light their way,
but this week even the expl*sives are duds.
- Pretty much sums up this build.
All fuse, no fireworks.
- [Narrator] Half an hour to go,
and Candice phones a friend.
- I called my brother.
He builds motors for race cars all day long,
and I asked him for a suggestion to see what to do,
and he told me to fill the carburetor with gas.
Get the motor running off the gas we put in the carburetor,
and it should suck it out of the fuel cell.
- Is that gonna be enough? - That should do it.
We just want to get it running off the carburetor first.
- Just make sure that-
- How do I?
- [Carolyn] Yeah. Good. Okay, go.
[starter cranking]
- Give it a while, so it.
- Give it a second.
[starter squeaking]
- [Candice] Is that ignition switch on?
Is the ignition switch on? - Yes, it's on.
[starter cranking]
- See, now it sounds like we got more power.
- Yeah, the problem is power.
We don't have power. - Okay, cut it for a sec.
Would you? - Cut it.
Cut it for a sec.
I mean, go ahead, gimme some crank.
- You ready? - Yeah.
- [Sherri] Hand square?
[starter cranking]
- Are you close enough? - There we go.
- You got it? You got a spark?
- [Carolyn] I got one there.
All right. I only wanna see one of 'em.
[energetic music]
- [Sherri] Battery.
- Look, it's your call.
[engine squealing]
- Come on. Come on. - Pour it in there.
Pour it. Pour it. - I don't know.
Honestly, I don't know.
- Come on, you son of a, come on.
[hand banging]
- Right there.
No, in that, right in that hole.
You see it?
Right there. A little bit more.
- Burns right off. - We're either,
we're either starting a fire.

- Pour it in there. - In that pour thing.

[team yelling]
[engine rumbling]
[fire ball booms]

- That's good. - That was gas.
[engine squealing]
- Add more gas.
Not so much. - Not done.
[engine cranking]
- What? - You can stop now.
- 20 seconds. - Oh man.
- Go! - Go!
- So they can pull it right there.
[buzzer beeps]
- We're gonna burn out this starter.
- Hey, even if it started, it ain't gonna,
this car ain't gonna go anywhere.
We got no way to drive it.
Good job guys.
- [Emily] That was the voice of reality right there.
Reality, reality reality, reality.
[somber music]
- To go to the bars. - Oh man, what a shame.
All that work.
Ugh. - What?
I wanna know what we're gonna do with this car.
- We tried.
We really did try. - Yeah, I know
that you guys did try. - Definitely.
I'm really disappointed.
- Closure? That wasn't closure? [laughs]
How much more closure do you want?
- No, I haven't. - 12 o'clock,
and it ain't running.

Watching the remnants of the doomed monster make its way
into the plant is none other
than the master fabricator himself,

Before the beast is hoisted skyward,
Jesse stabs the tires so they don't blow the place up.

This four wheel failure takes its final ride
and flies high above the factory floor.
[energetic music]
This 115 ton furnace reaches temperatures of 3000 degrees.
[energetic music]
You gotta be kidding me. That's hot.
[energetic music]

The electric arc burners sparks to life
with up to 90 megawatts of power.
Arc brought temperatures top 7,000 degrees.
That's as hot as the surface of the sun.
This monster's demise is a done deal.
[energetic rock music]
From messed up monster to molten metal.
Then solid steel.
Then rebar.
This team didn't win any medals,
but the metal in their monster will live on.
Well folks, Jesse's on his way back to the LBC.
Because he's got no time for lava that don't flow,
race cars that don't go,
and hanging around all chained up,
he's got metal to burn, sparks to fly.
