- [Narrator] This week's challenge.
Turn this cherry red street slick 1974 Camaro
into a mud slinging dirt track racer,
and it's going to be made by an all female team of builders.
That's right, built by women.
The rules, when built,
the vehicle must appear to be street stock
and the team has only five grand for parts.
Jesse and his lady builders have seven days and nights.
On the first day they design,
for the next five they build,
and on the seventh day,
the mud gets thrown and the Camaro races.
If successful, they'll walk away with a $4,000 set
of Mac's hottest tools
and a combo kit of Milwaukee's 28 volt
Lithium ion electric tools,
and the clock starts now.
[mud squelching]
[tires screeching]
[upbeat music]
Jesse drives the newly purchased Camaro
through the streets of Long Beach
like a perfect gentleman.
[upbeat music]
It's familiar territory for the master fabricator.
This isn't the first time he's built a race car with women.
- [Together] Go team.
- [Narrator] First there was the demolition derby build
and it was marginal at best,
but it was the second all female build
that took a crack at a dirt track Camaro
and it became one of the garage's most notorious failures.
- [beep] I think today, before the end of the day,
somebody's gonna get into a confrontation.
Why don't you finish it then?
Go ahead, go ahead, finish it.
- [Narrator] The team clashed, Jesse was unimpressed.
- Pretty much sums up this build,
all fuse, no fireworks.
- [Narrator] And it ended in a vat of molten metal.
[fire roaring]
The designers rolled in with a new outlook
and lay out the plan.

Jesse greets the girls
and gets ready for round two with a Camaro.
- Hi Jesse. - How you doing?
- Good, so we're building a street stock?
- Yeah, we're gonna try to do the same thing again.
- Okay. Is it gonna be a super street or street stock?
- Why don't we try to get the street class done?
- Okay. - And once this one makes it
and we're successful, then we'll go-
- To modify it- - To the next, yeah,
we'll go up a notch.
I mean this is a good chunk of work
and depending on how the team is,
I mean I'm not a little-
- Have faith in us, Jesse.
Faith in us, Jesse.
[upbeat music]
- So, I mean last time we did a motor and trans swap
and all that stuff,
which I think we're not gonna do that this time.
- Okay.
- We'll just focus on the stuff we need to do.
You know, right now the motor seems pretty good.
Full throttle, it works just fine.
- [Kathy] Okay.
- You know, we'll tighten up the carburetor
and see if we can tune it and new plugs
and points and all that stuff.
You know, we'll just tighten it up
and try to gain our power through a better trans
and a better gear ratio, and-
- Wanna do a four speed or stay automatic?
- Stay automatic. - Okay.
- You know, we'll just gear it right,
we should, you know, we gotta do a roll cage in it.
- Driver cage or full car?
- I think we just do like a six point.
- Okay. - You know, do a halo
then some, you know, a loop. - Loop down front.
- Loop and some kickers out the back.
- We can cover up the light buckets and stuff like that.
- Yeah, we can cover those up,
but you know, all the glass has to be taken out.
Best thing to do is try to get as much weight
out of it as we can.
You know, trunk, inner fender wells, glass.
Probably drop it down,
we'll put some lowering blocks on the back.
- Yep.
- Who's gonna drive it?
- Kathy?
- I'll drive it. - All right.
You guys can paint flowers and stuff on the side?
- Sure, daisies.
- More like flames and chomping teeth.
- Doilies on the dash.
I think that's about it, you know,
just build a race car.

- [Narrator] To get this Camaro street stock approved
and dirt track ready,
they'll clear out all the weight they can
before adding a fuel cell, firewall, roll cage,
and other safety gear.
And then they'll pump up the power by altering their gears
and adding a new transmission.

Day two.

The garage's third all girl crew
enters ready to build a race car
and prove once and for all that women can succeed
in the "Monster Garage."

Women have proof their individual worth in the past,
but can they band together as a team and hope to succeed?

Do you guys know what to do
or you want me to tell you?
- Start tearing stuff down. - Yeah.
- Go ahead. - I think today like just,
I mean we're gonna have to probably put a new trans in it
and then roll cage, seat.
Basically build a race car.
So focus on the stuff we have to do, no [engine revs].
You guys look pretty serious,
all the other girl teams
have really wanted to be on TV bad, so.
- We got this. - Yeah.
- We got this, yeah.
- Being on TV and being a loser is not a good combination.
- No. - But you know,
having something where she,
when we're done,
can take it out and haul a*s and win with it,
then it's something cool, so,
and then I gotta race Saturday night,
so we gotta get done before then.
- I know, I wanna go watch.
- All right, you guys can watch if we finish, so.

- [Narrator] First order of business,
lighten the load and ditch over a thousand pounds
of factory installed extras a race car doesn't need.
- No thank you.
- We don't need a guy to help us with this build.

- Chuck her.
[window clattering]

- [Narrator] To strip away every ounce of fat
from this muscle car,
the girls put its body on the Long Beach diet.
- That's the top skin. - Yeah.
- All right, right here is together.
I just wanna cut through the hood.
- The thing you gotta make sure is that when we're cutting,
it doesn't go all the way through both surfaces.
[upbeat music] [tools whirring]

- [Narrator] As Jesse starts forming
the first bars of their cage,
he pauses to reflect on that age old question,
how many builders does it take to skin a hood?
[upbeat music]
[parts clattering]
- I think we're getting that handled
'cause, you know, it won't work without it.
[upbeat music]
- Oh, it's twisted.
We can straighten it though.
Waiting for that vice to go, ka pow.
[upbeat music]
[vice clattering]
Yeah.
Yeah, that almost hit my head.
That was rad [laughs].
Bend's good now.

- [Narrator] The last piece they ripped from the Chevy
is its original transmission.
[upbeat music] [tools whirring]

- We got a transmission coming,
and then we'll plug her back in.
- [Narrator] When it comes to racing on dirt tracks,
Kathy Pearson has been plugged in for more than 25 years.
- Dirt's awesome.
I mean you're just outta control,
hanging it out there all the time.
It's just just fun
and the people in the dirt racing
are just my kind of people.
[upbeat music]
- [Narrator] And she's no stranger
to the "Monster Garage" either.
- Oh, I came for the first build for this car
and was on the design team
and kind of hung out and watched
for the first probably three, four hours.
It was horrible.
Well, I'm glad I get to come and do the whole build,
I was kind of bummed I had to go home last time.
- [Narrator] Late on day two,
this crew is rolling through the tear out.
[upbeat music] [tools whirring]
[parts clattering]
After a long day thrashing the Camaro
and trashing the garage,
Jesse and the gals call in a night and hit the pavement.
Tomorrow they start to rebuild it for the dirt.
"Monster Garage" factoid.
According to a study
by the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration,
women are statistically better drivers than men.
The study failed to cite, however,
the impact made by these women
who constantly stopped to ask for directions.

- [Narrator] Day three.
They took the old Camaro apart yesterday,
so today they begin building a down and dirty race car.
- Today I think our goal's just gonna be
getting the wheel studs done,
getting everything sealed up,
get ready for the fuel cell.
[upbeat music]
- [Narrator] Mandy and Kathy go to beef up the engine
while staying inside the guidelines
of the street stock rules.
[upbeat music]
- The only thing that was holding the motor in the car
was a distributor up against the firewall.
So this will just kind of secure it.
[upbeat music]
- I just want to set the intake straight down.
- Down. - Okay, you're looking good.
- Awesome.
[upbeat music]
Going from a four barrel down to a two barrel carburetor,
so we're gonna be producing a little less horse power
than we would be if we were with a four barrel intake.
So, but to their rules,
they keep it in a budget
and this is to make their budget requirements.
- [Narrator] Whether she's rebuilding an engine
or passing traffic on her Harley,
Mandy Gordon has always had a head for racing.
- Growing up in a family business that was motor sports,
my brothers, my father racing dirt tracks
and I just kind of naturally fell into the drag racing
'cause I like the speed.
- [Narrator] She may be taking charge under the hood,
but don't let her catch you calling her a mechanic.
- Well, I'm not really a mechanic,
I consider myself more a technician.
Being able to diagnose and actually get in
and do that kind of work
instead of just getting my hands dirty all the time.
- [Narrator] In the garage,
Kathy coaches Tammy through the metalwork.
- We're gonna make plates to cover this
and then they're gonna bend with the contour of this.
- Right.
- Probably have some real nice, probably aluminum.
- Okay. - Like.
[upbeat music]
- [Narrator] The rule for this racer says,
headlights and taillights must go
to prevent cars from getting hooked on each other
in close quarters.
[upbeat music]
[upbeat music continues]
After helping Tammy cover the headlights,
Mary Jo cuts out a template for their firewall.
[upbeat music]
- Trying to figure out the sheet metal pieces
to go cover up the holes in the firewall.
So if there is a fire,
the fire won't come into the cab with the driver.
[upbeat music]
- Good.
Okay, we got you something to weld whenever you're ready.
- [Narrator] After removing all that weight yesterday,
the girls start gaining it back
by welding in a blast proof sheet of heavy duty steel.
[upbeat music]
When Jesse comes in,
he gets right to work on the roll cage.
He learned a valuable lesson
from the last group of garage gals,
if you want it done right, do it yourself.
The last dirt track Camaro was rough from the get go
and the rookie roll cage was no exception.
[upbeat music]
- I don't think it'll pass test.
- I hear you.
- Because if you put it on its lid
and that's a shearing point where it'll break
and a bar come and hit you in the head.
- So what do you suggest?
- I think we should cut it out and do it all over again.
- [Narrator] This was the beginning of the end
for that build.
He won't make the same mistake twice.
[upbeat music]
- Perfect.
- [Narrator] The first bars of the roll cage
are ready to go,
but they aren't going anywhere
until Wanda finishes welding inside the car.
- [Jesse] Are you gonna be done soon?
- Uh-huh, I've already fixed the side for you
while you were talking to someone.
- Well I wanna put the roll cage in
so let me know when you're done
so I can start putting the tubes in.
[upbeat music]
- [Narrator] Wanda and Mary Jo
go to finish off the firewall,
but the super thick steel is slowing their pace.
- [Jesse] Sure that metal's thick enough
for that firewall and stuff?
- That is one eighth inch steel.
What you looking at me so crazy for?
- It's pretty thick.
You could have just used duct tape or that metal tape
to cover up the holes.
- [Mandy] Wait, we're down with weight anyhow.
[hammer banging]
- Hey Kathy.
[hammer banging]
- What's going on Jesse?
- How come you let them use eighth inch to plug those holes?
- I didn't even see that. - Come on, man.
[hammer banging]
- It's kind of heavy stuff. [hammer banging]
- [Narrator] Instead of waiting for the women,
Jesse, heads off for the day.
- I'm going to my shop.
[upbeat music] [engine roaring]
- [Narrator] Mandy isn't wasting any time
handling the power boosting gear adjustment.
- What we're gonna do is I'm gonna remove this unit here,
which is the ring and pinion and we'll take it out,
we'll weld it up so it's positrack.
And then we're gonna put a new set of rings and gear in
which has lower gear,
which means there's more teeth per gear,
that gives us our ratio.
- [Narrator] When it comes to gear ratio,
more teeth equals more power.
By adding a smaller pinion and larger ring
with twice the gear teeth,
they'll maximize the amount of torque delivered
to the rear wheels.
Then the side gears are welded to the pinion gears,
forcing the axles to rotate at the same speed
for better handling through the corners.
Mary Jo does her part welding the gears
to positrack the rear wheel drive.
Just don't ask her why.
- I'm welding these gears together to lock up,
I'm not exactly sure why,
but per Mandy's request.
- For me to fabricate it,
I don't have to know what it does.
- [Narrator] Why?
Because this fabricator works for the government
on a need to know basis.
- I work for the Navy Research Lab
and we build prototype sonars for the Navy.
They bring us prints like a any other fabrication shop
and then we build it according to their prints.
- [Narrator] She might not understand what she's welding,
but with over 30 years behind the torch,
you can bet she'll weld it right.
- I started welding and the same year as that car, in '74.
- [Narrator] Mandy and Wanda tailor the axle.
- We're bringing this axle from here to here,
putting us up into the fender well and that's what we want.
We want to go up in the fender well more
so the car is lower to the ground
and the rules say we can't change these
and we don't want to change 'em anyhow.
So the only way we can actually do it
is by changing the integrity and the location of the spring.
[upbeat music]
- This is what I'm talking about [cheers].

- How many do you want, we need larger?
- I think we'll be fine there, go ahead and-

- Jesse's working on that.

as the list gets shorter,

Not until the year 2000 did two women qualify
for the same Indy 500 race.
However, neither veteran Lynn St. James
nor 19-year-old Sarah Fisher made it across the finish line.
They both were knocked outta of the race
after crashing into each other.

- We're gonna go to the machine shop
and do the axles and stuff. - All right.

Mandy and Kathy are back with their newly drilled axles
and Jesse's right on their tail
with a morning batch of freebies from Jegs.

- Got our fuel cell.
- Isn't, oh there it is, there is another box.
- I'll take this over towards the back of the car.

- [Narrator] The crew gets a cell for the Camaro's fuel
and something racy to fuel the fire.
- Look, we got little teeny bikini underwears.
- Awesome.

- [Narrator] The new party gifts aren't enough
to derail Kathy.
She's still focused on their wheels.
- These wheel studs out and put these ones per the rules.
Rule is you gotta have five eighth wheel stud.
So we had to drill out the rotors
or the drums,
drill out the rotors and drill out the rear axles
to get these to fit,
and they press fit in.
[tools banging]
- [Mary Jo] Does it sit in there?
[upbeat music]
- We did it,
now we get the axles in,
get the ring and pinion in,
get the tires on and go from there.
[upbeat music]
- [Narrator] Mandy flies through the rear regear,
assembling the less of the power boosting pieces.

- Mary Jo's working on the fuel cell mount frame,
so we're gonna work on that and get that done.

- The straps are what's gonna hold
this fuel cell up and down.
So we just need room to get the straps in there.
With a bend in it and put a bolt through it.

- We're just kind of getting it up there
to see if all your our measurements are right,

but what happened is I pinched the cage in a little bit
so it has like a real tight fit
and it made this just a little bit too tight,

this dirt track Camaro is becoming a reality
and Kathy's already dreaming of race day.

- [Narrator] Tammy has no problem carving out
a mud blocking grill for the Camaro.
But when it comes to her own race car,
she prefers to leave the work to her own personal pit boss.
- I don't care when I screw it up and wreck it,
I don't care.
My husband fixes it.
So it's all matters [laughs].

- [Narrator] There's always plenty of race car to fix
after one of Tammy's Hornet class events.
- Car's not supposed to be valued at more than 250 bucks.
So if you tear it up, you tear it up.
It's fun, I have a lot of fun.
- [Narrator] But she doesn't let all that roughhousing
pull her away from her nine to five.
- I am a structural steel fabricator welder.
We build the bones of the building, yeah,
that's what we do.
It always interested me and I just came home one day
and told my husband I went and registered for school
to be a welder,
so, and he's like, "Okay."
- [Narrator] Tammy has the grill good to go
and a late afternoon delivery
keeps the build rolling forward.
- Our rims and tires, finally,
now we can get the car off the stands.
- [Jesse] What do they do?
What do they do?
- They spin really fast and go fast and go fast.
[upbeat music]

- [Narrator] At the end of day four,
the girls have hustled together a ton of this monster,
but they won't be sitting pretty
until they get the beast to growl.

Day five.
The girls have a lot of ground to cover
before midnight tomorrow,
but no matter what the job,
there's always enough time to have fun with the boss.
- Oh, we got curtains, doilies.
- Should we have 'em come through a curtain right there?
Put a curtain form. - Yes, yes.
- [Narrator] They had a feminine touch
to Jesse's own personal workspace.

- What's doing it? - Wait a second.
- Smells better in here than it did before.

- [Narrator] Jesse arrives early and has no idea
what he's in for.

they'll just need to make it work.

when we're putting the fittings back in,
B&M machined this one down for some reason
and it should be flat like this.
- Oh dammit. - So.
- Well let's split, you guys failed.

- [Narrator] Unphased, Jesse taps new threads.

Then bores out the crooked line
so they can customize a fitting.
- [Jesse] Any bit fixes everything.
[tool whirring]

You know what, let's drill it out three eights
for that three eights MPT.

- [Narrator] Mandy finishes drilling the inlet
and pieces together a fitting
that'll allow the fluid to flow.
- It's not right, but this is "Monster Garage"
so we gotta get it done.
- [Narrator] She ain't pretty in pink, but she'll do.
So Kathy and Mandy wheel it over and lock her into place.
[upbeat music]
With the tr*nny loaded,
they bolt in the drive shaft linking their power plant
to the re-geared rear end.
The garage is running at full throttle.
[upbeat music]
Jesse tacks together the less of the roll cage,
and Wanda trails him finishing off the welds.
[upbeat music]
But before she's done,
a "Monster Garage" producer breaks her away
for her profile interview.
- Maybe half hour.
Pull you out, knock your interview out, totally done.
- Okay. - With interviews.
- Okay.
- [Narrator] If there's one thing Wanda knows, it's metal.
- I can make, take,
I can do stick welding,
I can do gas welding,
plasma cutting, braising, soldering.
- [Narrator] While Wanda is being interviewed,
the team doesn't want the welding to wait
so Tammy and Mary Jo jump in to finish up.
- Don't even worry about them,
just put a bunch of small tacks about an inch wide
all the way down. - All right.
[upbeat music] [blow torch blazing]
- [Narrator] When Wanda returns,
she isn't happy to find out a job she started
was finished by a teammate.
- All right, what's gotta be done?
- What was the problem over there?
- Oh she was just mad
'cause she didn't get to finish her job.
I go, "We got three welders here and we need get done."
- That's exactly right.
She needs to talk to me then 'cause I made the call.
- Well that's the whole thing.
I go, we got three welders,
we wanna get that done
so we can get the seat in and the battery box.
- Because I still need to start the car,
I need to make sure the transmission works
and above anything else,
that's more important than the welding.
- Did she say something I didn't hear?
When I start one project,
I expect you to finish that project.
- Okay.
- But you were gone for half an hour,
so we just cut it.
- On this project, everybody jumps in and works.
- It's fine, don't even waste your time talking about it.
It's stupid, it's done.

Trying to get too much done at one time.
- [Narrator] So Wanda decides to re-weld the driver's door,
which has already been torched by a teammate.
- I'm gonna have to take those wheels off there?

by teaming up on the support for the seat.
- Around nine - Nine inches.
Make that and then I'll heli arch it.

- Then we'll we'll kind of eyeball it
and we'll make four tabs. - Okay.

but Mary Jo is earning it one beat at a time.

but the seat isn't the only thing in the garage
that needs his attention.

is the monster.

The last team of women left their engine work
for the last day.
- Let it keep cranking.
- [Narrator] And as they struggled to get it started,
the clock caught up with them and their time ran out.
- Even if it started,
this car ain't gonna go anywhere.
We got no way to drive it.
- [Narrator] This crew paid attention
to the previous failure,
they're testing the motor a day early.
- Ready? - Go, fire.
[engine roaring]
- Hold on, go ahead.
[engine roaring]
[people clapping and cheering]
[upbeat music]
Sounds pretty good. - Yeah.
- Shut her off a second.
- It's looking like a race car.
- It is.
This is a good picture right here.
It's a motley looking crew.

- [Narrator] Five days in and this crew
has worked circles around the Camaro.
They'll be back in the morning to finish it off
and hopefully deliver a happy ending.

- [Narrator] Day six.
The out of this world crew arrives
ready to wrap up this build
in time to check out Jesse's race tonight.
- So here we are.
What do we got going?
- Just minor things,
wrapping up the windshield, bumper,
welding the door shut,
kinda in that order.
- Going racing. - Going racing.
- Yeah. [people cheering]
- [Kathy] Is that good with you alien?
[people laughing]

- [Narrator] Tammy and Mary Jo start off
riveting in a mud shield.
And improve the view with a visor and a coat of flat black.
- Silver, and chrome is very reflective
and if you leave it that way,
then you have a problem seeing
and if you paint it black,
you can actually see better.
[upbeat music]
- [Narrator] Then Mandy and Kathy carry in the spoils
of an auto store shopping spree,
as Jesse arrives nipping at their heels.
- We have goodies.
We've got some stuff that it's a in the dirt car.
Fuzzy dice, a must in a race car.
Tire flies, they'll light up on the rims.
[upbeat music]
- [Narrator] When it comes to accessorizing,
Jesse has his own ideas.
- No don't. [bat banging]
- Dammit, it's a race car.
- I can't believe he just did that.
It's not arts and crafts.
[laughs] They're bitchin'.
- [Narrator] But this crew isn't about to take
what the boss is dishing.
[foam thudding]
[Jesse laughing]
- Hey.

Totally messing up my hair.
- Oh my God. [people laughing]
[upbeat music]
- [Narrator] Now the ladies put the Louisville Slugger
to good use,
rolling back the fenders for more clearance.
[upbeat music]
But there's only so much a baseball bat can hack.
Sometimes you gotta play with fire.

Mary Jo swoops in to finish off the fender,
and Kathy has an announcement
that's rarely heard before sundown on the last build day.
- Half a day early and we're done.
It's done.
High five everybody.
[people cheering]
- [Jesse] Don't get pulled over.
[upbeat music]
There, now it looks like it's fair.
- Stop it.
[Jesse laughing]
- Straight up.
- On the roof.
- No, yeah.
- It's dead.
[engine roaring]
Talk about your pieces of crap.
- Put the car on first.
- [Narrator] With the car complete,
the only thing left to do is take it for a test drive.
- [Jesse] Stupid girls.
[upbeat music]
- Yeah [laughs].

I knew Kathy could drive,
I can just tell.

- [Narrator] The build day may be over,
but the racing's just getting started.
Now the king of the shop can proudly hail a victory
for these queens of the Camaro.
- Mandy, Kathy, Wanda.
- Yeah.
- Mary Jo, Tammy.
You guys made it.
[people cheering and clapping]
- Yes.
- It's not that good,
you didn't do it all by yourself, I helped.
[people laughing]

- That's it, we're done?
[people cheering and clapping]
- [Narrator] A night at the track is a just reward
for this hardworking group of gals.
- Gimme a J,

gimme an S.
- Oh wait, we have to be cheerleader.
[engine roaring]
- [Narrator] They're going to support Jesse
in his own race against the clock,
figure eight style.
- [Kathy] Come on Jesse, win it.
- [Narrator] In a figure eight race,
the driver's complete 20 laps on a track
shaped like a sideways number eight.
[engines roaring]
And when it comes to passing through the intersection,
timing is everything.
[upbeat music]
[engine roaring]
Jesse finishes the race unscathed
and because he didn't win,
he tracks down the winner
and gives him something to remember him by.
- Oh my God that was awesome. - That was cool.
- [Kathy] There was a couple of times I closed my eyes,
was like, "Oh my God."
- Now you know why I was going to do that.
- That was awesome. - Yeah.
- Thank you.

their pink lady,
and the locals seem friendly enough.

- Well I think being a woman racer with these guys,
you always feel like you got that extra pressure
because these guys don't wanna get beat by a girls
so they're gonna beat you up a little bit more
than they would just a normal guy, so.

and Kathy's ready to get wild on a test run.
[upbeat music]

- Car runs really good.
