10x04 - New Engine, New Headache

Post by bunniefuu »

[Danny] On your mark,

get set,

go!

-[car engine revs]
-[Kevin] Hold on.

-[Danny] You're doing great!
-It was in park.

-[chuckles]
-Take two.

[Tim] It's gonna be
a fun little ripper,

especially with the 6-speed
automatic, uh, stick.

[Justin] Bring it over.
We're cutting it.

Just like that.

[man] Drain the fluid
out of it and that way
you don't end up

with fluid
draining everywhere.

I hate fluid everywhere.

[Justin] Need a bucket. Hurry!

Stellar. Wonderful.

[upbeat music playing]

Dude, if you go off the track,

you're disqualified.

[rock music playing]

[Dave] When I look
at a blank canvas,

I see endless possibilities.

As the ideas come to mind,

the lines start
to fall into place.

And before you know it,
we have a bitchin' ride.

[tires screeching]

[Dave] A bitchin' ride
has intense color.

-[man 1] This is gorgeous!
-[Dave] Performance.

[man 2] It's fantastic.

[Dave] Stance. Wheels.

Sound.

There's one thing
that makes our cars stand out.

Ours are bitchin' rides.

[man 3]
Well, it never gets old.

[man 4 laughs]

So, uh, we're taking, uh,
this out

and we're putting
in a bigger, better...

Dimensionally, it's bigger,
but it's still a 5-liter.

-But it's way cooler.
-But it's got a supercharger?

[Justin] Coyote.

With a 6-speed.

-With a 6-speed?
-[Justin] Yeah.

Pretty nice.

[dramatic music playing]

[Dave] When our buddy, Roy,
called us

and wanted us to work
on his '88 Fox Body Mustang

and wanted to make it faster
and funner and cooler,

and faster,
did I mention faster?

Well, I said, "Ship it, buddy.
Let's get it done."

[Dave] Let's, uh,
pull the engine out.

If you want to drain

the fluid out of it,
that's fine.

-[Justin] Okay.
-[Dave] And that way,

you don't end up with fluid
draining everywhere.

I hate fluid everywhere.

Rumor is, that some
of the fluids in this car

are actually original,

so we're hoping
not to spill anything

because I don't wanna have
to call hazmat.

[Justin] I'm kind of jealous
of whoever's

gonna drive this car.

[man] I don't think
he's gonna let you.

[Justin] I know.

[man] But you might get
to drive it to the dyno,

and make sure it works.

So you'll get
to drive it before him.

Agreed.

[dramatic music playing]

[man speaking]

[dramatic music playing]

This exhaust has been on here
for a while

and it had a U-bolt clamp
on it,

so it's pretty stuck
where it's at.

Pretty tight.

I don't think
it's even moving.

No.

[Justin] Bring it over.
We're cutting it.

Just like that.

That was fun.

[dramatic music playing]

I got the guys turning
this Mustang down,

but I wanna get on the phone

with my main man Roy
to get the game plan.

Hey, what's up, buddy?

Hey, what's up, Kevin?
How you've been?

Hey, dude.

So your car showed up,
and the only thing

that I've been walking around
the shop

thinking about
is "Ice Ice Baby".

Vanilla Ice? [laughs]

You know, it was
a high school dream of mine,

but it's just not
fast enough, so...

Well,
it was fast when it was made.

It's an '88, isn't it?

Yeah. '88, Fox Body.

But now, things are just
a lot faster, right?

We just need to amp it up,
man. Maybe, uh,

Coyote swap,

maybe a ROUSH motor
with a blower?

We can do that.

What are you thinking about
for transmission?

Like a 6-speed.

We'll make it manual,
that'll be cool.

With all that power,
you know though,

you're gonna need something
to stop you better

and probably something
to handle

because I think the suspension
of that thing

could probably only handle

the 300 whopping horsepower
that it has.

So if we put
this ROUSH motor in

with the blower,

what kind of horsepower
do you think it'll pull?

I think you're gonna
probably see six plus.

-Really?
-[Kevin] At the wheel, yeah.

All right.
And the car weighs what?

I don't know.
Um, let me call...

Hold on, let me call
Vanilla Ice real quick.

[Roy laughs]

Do you really think

[Kevin] Yeah, easy.

I bet that engine,
you're probably

seeing 680, 690 at the crank,

and you're running
a manual transmission,

so there's not a lot
of loss there.

Well, what about seatbelts?

Hmm, not really worried
about it.

Can we upgrade
the seatbelts?

No, the seatbelts
will be fine.

That's a lot
of horsepower, Kevin.

Like, I'm worried about
my safety at this point.

Dude, have you ever driven
a fast car before?

Yeah.

I'm not so sure he has,

and I have some
other concerns as well.

And let me ask you this.

I never knew that
you could get like a 5.0,

like a GT with four-lug.

Yeah, that's how they come.
I don't know.

Are you sure it wasn't like
a ladies edition

or something?

Like, four-lug ladies edition?

[laughs]

Well, maybe we
can amp that up,

switch over to five-lug.

And then the carpet looked
pretty tore up.

Yeah.

We're gonna have
to take that apart anyway,

so let's just--

Borla exhaust.

We'll do Borla exhaust
on it.

And rims and tires.

I want this to be
your little project.

Okay.

I want you to treat this car
like it's yours.

I think I know
what you're looking for.

Like, this is probably one
of your cars

that you always dreamed
about having

when you were a kid,

and now you've gone one
and it's not as awesome

as you thought
it would be to drive,

-so now we need
to make it awesome...
-Right.

...for you to drive
and enjoy, right?

I know it's crazy,
it's just a '88 Mustang,

but it means
the world to me...

-[Kevin] Okay.
-...so I just want you

to do your thing.

I will hook you up,
and like I said,

I want you to be able
to pull up to a light

and just smoke
whatever's there.

Period.

Period.

Done deal, dude. Done deal.

All right. Thanks, Kevin.
Tell Dave I said hi...

-Who?
-...and I appreciate...

-Dave.
-Who?

Tell him I said...

-[laughs]
-I got it.

Okay, buddy. Take it easy.

All right. Thank you.

[Kevin] We got
the plan in place,

the car's coming apart.

What could go wrong now?

[man] Kenny.

[Kenny] Need a bucket.

Hurry!

Not that one.

Why did you pull it out?

You knew it was gonna do that.

[Kenny]
I got the dry one.

I thought you drained
the trans.

[laughs]

We should move this bucket.

[Kenny] Go ahead.

-Here, I'll hold it for you.
-[Justin] Thanks.

Stellar. Wonderful.

[Justin]
Now, we're to the point

where we can pull out
the engine.

Now we just need
to figure out where

to throw some chains on it

and lift this thing out.

[dramatic music playing]

[Justin] Try to hook up
to some of these

exhaust manifold bolts

and put that spreader bar
on there

and lift it up,
trying to get it balanced out.

[Kenny] Oh. It's moving.

We gotta tilt the spreader bar

so it comes up at an angle

and clears everything

with the transmission
stuck to it still.

Hold up.

Oh, we're hanging on
the fuel line.

Start coming forward.

[Kenny] You wanna try
and level it out some, or...

[Justin] Uh...

I mean, if we can get it out,

let's just get it out
before we level it out.

[man] Got the back?

-[Justin] Yeah.
-[Kenny] Yeah.

We're clear.

See, good thing I drained

some of that
transmission fluid out

so we're not leaking
so much out.

I was thinking ahead.

He's knocked me out
with a gallon of milk,

a freezer door,

kicked me out
of the tree like twice.

Yeah. [laughs]

[Dave] Not only did Justin
and Kenny

just pull the engine out
of this Mustang,

but they're also brothers.

And I think there might be
a little bit of, uh,

brotherly love involved
in this one?

[producer speaking]

Nothing.

He stabbed me.

Well, that was after
he burned me, though.

I mean...

[dramatic music playing]

Well, there it is.

Now that this is done,

all we gotta do
is everything else.

Now we need to get somebody
over here

to clean all this up.

-It's you.
-[Justin laughs]

[Dave] Getting the engine
out of this car

was only the first
of a long list of things to do

on this Mustang.

[Justin] New K-member,
suspension, brake,
fuel system, wiring.

Pretty much everything.

[tool whirring]

[Justin] My end goal
is to get this whole K-member

out of the car's
steering component,

suspension component,
stock brakes.

We've got it under

these shocks
out of these towers,

that's pretty much

what the weight
is resting on right now,

so we'll get these unbolted,

get everything
sitting on the ground,

then we'll go up with the car
and see

if it starts to come out.

Okay. Let it down.

[man] A big hole, huh?

[Justin] Yeah.

[upbeat music playing]

It's like Christmas
but opening up parts.

Diff cover, springs.

[Dave] Of all
of the new components

going in the front
of this Mustang,

this new K-member
is gonna be one vital piece

to hold it all together.

[Justin] It opens up a lot
more room in the engine bay.

It's stiffer,

so it'll brace up the front
of the car a little better,

keep it from trying to twist.

It's gonna be
a fun little ripper.

Did I say I was excited
about this K-member?

I have to take that back.

It must be the excitement
for these coilover shocks.

So camber
will be how much this tilts

towards inside the car,

and then caster
is how much forward

and back the strut is.

[Justin]
Kind of like that, huh?

Kind of like that.

[Justin] I like the fact
that these plates

have so much adjustment

and that you could hit
the race track,

pop the hood on it,

and throw your caster,
camber adjustment in there

and then be able
to corner on the track,

and have it right
where it needs to be.

[upbeat music playing]

Right now, we're about
to put the engine in.

So I'm mounting
the adjustable

motor mounts we have here.

[Dave] Okay.

I was probably a little wrong
on that one, too.

The coilovers
are certainly cool,

the K-member, rad,

but by far, the coolest thing
going up front

is this Coyote ROUSH 5.0
supercharged engine.

It's time to get it on.

[Tim]
It's gonna be a fun swap,

especially with the 6-speed
automatic to a stick.

I prefer a stick over
a automatic any day.

This is, like,

It'll be a fun street car,
definitely.

-[producer speaking]
-[Justin] Keep coming.

Come down a little bit more.

-[Kevin] Down?
-[Tim] Yup.

Right there.

The engine fit nicely,
but that's half the battle.

Okay.

I'm gonna get the transmission
stuffed up in

and on the cross member,

and then we can level
the motor off

and get it positioned
where it needs to be

-in the engine bay.
-[Kevin] I prefer
a short one.

Maybe you should jack

because you're not tall enough
to hold it.

Dude. Man.
You wanna get all personal.

-[Kevin] Never mind.
-[laughter]

[upbeat music playing]

Installing the transmission
to the engine sounds easy,

but we all know

easy is not
how it always goes.

[Kevin] And we're still
hooked right here, dude.

[Justin speaking]

I had to cut the ear off

the transmission
that was sticking out

because it was contacting
the transmission tunnel,

kind of flattened it out
a little bit,

hopefully it gave us
enough clearance

that this thing
will actually go in there.

[dramatic music playing]

[Justin speaking]

[Tim] Hey. See that?

And she's in, finally.

[Tim] Oh,
I'm pretty happy with that,

I'm pretty stoked
now that we know it fits.

Here, we'll do
high fives together.

[Justin] Lunch time.

-Lunch time.
-[Justin] Yeah.

[upbeat music playing]

[Dave] The reason
we're gonna put the engine in

is to ensure
not only it fits in the car

but also we have room
for all the components

such as the headers,
the steering,

the exhaust system,

all of the wiring needs
to be changed.

So there's a lot of things
to make room for,

and the only way
to figure that out

is to get the b*llet
in the chamber.

You're two inches below
the transmission bell housing.

And the transmission's
already close to the tunnel?

[man] Yeah.

Reworking these $1,200 headers
is not worth it.

[Dave] Not gonna spend
$8,000 on top of $1,200

to revamp the headers.

Might as well just build them
from scratch.

Put a skid plate on it.

-[laughs]
-[man] Yeah.

[dramatic music playing]

You guys connect
that exhaust back up

and get it back up
into the body

going back further, right?

Plus, we got to take
into consideration

the roller wheels
that are on here right now

are super, super low.

Getting the engine
in the engine bay

seems to have been
the easiest part

of this project so far.

Now, we got to figure out
what to do with these headers

that don't fit
inside the engine bay.

They have no ground clearance,
and also,

where the rest of the exhaust
is gonna go.

This is only 22 inches
overall height,

we're gonna
be 24 and a half, 25.

Plus, you're gonna level
the control arm

so it's got good alignment.

You're gonna put it
a five and a half,

which is about a new Corvette.

So, maybe it just looks worse
than it is.

I vote that we stick
with this, guys, honestly.

I mean, these headers
were built for it in this car.

[man] Yeah.

[Dave] But let's not
second guess it.

If that's where it has to go,
that's where it has to go.

Yup. It works for me.

Let them eat cake.

There's the cake.

Just finish putting
the frosting on it.

I'm good at analogies here.

I'm gonna take
the rest of the afternoon.

[laughs]

[dramatic music playing]

[Tim] Right now, this primary

is rubbing up against
this bell housing.

So we're gonna do
a little clearances
right here,

so we can get it to go in.

[man] We got to go more.

-[Tim] More?
-[man] Yes, sir.

[upbeat music playing]

[Dave] You know
it's not gonna be easy,

but in our industry,
nothing is.

We're gonna go ahead and make
a couple of small changes

to get it sitting
just perfectly in this car.

-[man 1] Good?
-[man 2] Woo-hoo!

[man] Got it in there.
All clearanced out.

So all we got to do now
is just plumb

the rest of the exhaust,
fuel lines, brake lines,

wire it up,

get it ready for fire.

[upbeat music playing]

[Dave] While the guys
continue to work

on Roy's Fox Body Mustang,

Kevin and I
have a special assignment.

We got to go do some research
down in Chandler, Arizona.

[car engine revving]

[Kevin] There's no better way

to do field research

than to go to Radford
and take the driving school.

That might not be
totally true,

but it's gonna be fun.

[Danny] Welcome to the Radford
Racing School, guys.

You know,
this is the premier place

to learn how to be
a better driver,

whether it's on the street
or on the track.

And, I say we just get started
right away.

-Right--
-I'm all about it.

-Let's do it. I am ready.
-I am in. Let's do it.

I'm here to take in

-all of the racing
information you have.
-Perfect.

The sooner we go
in the classroom,

the sooner we can get
in cars, right?

-That's right.
-Let's go to the classroom.

Let's do it.
Classroom number one
on your left.

-Right here?
Okay. Perfect.
-[Kevin] Sounds good.

[dramatic music playing]

[Danny] First thing I wanted
to let you know

is that we've got
a few really cool challenges.

You two are gonna be pitted
against each other

in these driving drills to see

who comes out
as the better driver.

This is really cool,
because it's, like,

an advanced training,
and I get to really look good

compared to my competition,
Kev dog.

[Danny] I've got three
cool driving jobs.

The first one is gonna be
the skid car.

I'm gonna see which one of you
is better at driving a car

when it gets to a skid.

Next thing we're gonna do
is we're gonna put you

through our autocross course.

Yes?

On the skid car,

it's not about who can do
the best skid?

Sorry. This is my first time.

You're thinking
about drifting?

-Yeah.
-[Danny] Yeah.

We're gonna be
just sliding the car.

I'm gonna be making
the car skid,

and it's gonna be up to you
as the driver to fix it.

I like it.

I've never done
an official racing school.

This is awesome.

They have all of these things

that I've only seen
on television

that I'm excited
to be a part of.

[Danny] So the other thing
we're gonna do with you guys

is we're gonna put you
on the autocross

and the object
is get through that course,

as quick as possible,

without knocking
any of the cones down.

So that's the catch.

-I--
-[Danny] Something tells me

you're gonna be hitting
some cones.

I beat Dave last time
at autocrossing.

-Oh, you did?
-[Kevin] Yeah.

Oh, very interesting.

There is no proof.

So this sounds like
it might be a grudge match.

-[Dave] Mmm-hmm.
-No, we love each other.

[Danny] Oh, I don't know.

My experience
and his lack of experience

could ruffle the feathers
a little bit.

So I gotta be cautious
and be kind.

Now, the last thing
we're gonna do with you guys

is we're gonna put you out

on the Radford Road course

and apply all
the different techniques

that we do with you guys.

So actually, this trip
down here is bifold,

Uh, we're actually down here
to do some "research."

You catch our drift.

Hmm. Okay.

We need to probably
talk to you a little bit

-about engines--
-And longevity.

Well, I think you've come
to the right place.

You know, here
at the Radford Racing School.

We've got a whole fleet

of Dodge SRT vehicles
at our disposal

that we use
for class every day.

[upbeat music playing]

[Danny] The Hellcat,
Challenger, and Charger

has a 6.2-liter
supercharged engine

that puts out anywhere
between 717 horsepower

and 797 horsepower.

And then you look
at the Dodge Demon

has 808 horsepower.

And I think
we're gonna have a chance

to get behind the wheel
of one of Dodge's

latest creations,
the Dodge Demon 170.

-And that thing--
-Is the 170 here?

-Oh, yeah, with a little
over 1,000 horsepower.
-[Kevin] Oh, okay.

I think that much pretty much
covers our research.

What a great research project
this has been.

[Danny]
Are there any questions?

Yes?

So Dave's a better driver
at me at this point, barely.

So do you think
that Radford could make me

a better driver than Dave?

Absolutely. Yes.

Is there a limit
to how many stupid questions

you can ask before we can get
on the track?

[laughter]

Just asking for a friend.

[tense music playing]

-Well...
-[Kevin] Well, look at this.

Yeah. So you guys said, uh,

you were here
to do some research.

So, I thought this might be
like the baddest thing

to do some engine research on.

This is the 2023 Demon 170.

[Kevin] What? What--

[man] Now, we're gonna
put your helmet on

and walk you through actually
doing a burnout.

[Kevin] Let's do it.

-[car engine revving]
-[Kevin] Wow!

[dramatic music playing]

When Dodge came out
with a Demon in 2018,

the premise of that car

was the fastest drag race
production car ever built.

[Dave] We're here
in Chandler, Arizona

at our good friends,
Radford Racing School,

and we are doing "research"

and possibly a little bit
of hands-on research.

[Danny] So what Dodge did
for this year,

I think their idea was

"We're gonna take it
to the next level."

And they've completely
re-engineered this car.

[Kevin] This car is insane.

I haven't even
seen one of these

and now, here, I'm getting
ready to get in one.

This is a 170 Demon.

I'm speechless.

[Danny] We are fortunate
enough to have

one of the first ones out.

[Chuck]
Everything's been upgraded.

Is that the three liter
blower?

[Chuck] Correct. They've
increased the blower size,

the intake size,
the injector size,

the fuel pump,
the fuel pressure.

Any person could jump
in this car

after you put it on a program.

Mash the gas.
If they get a good light,

they're gonna turn
a really good time?

Exactly.

That car has everything
set up,

all modern,

to drag race
and go home in it.

It's just crazy.

Chuck, you think we could, uh,

get these guys in this car

and maybe,
uh, do a couple runs?

[Chuck] Yeah, absolutely.

We'll start out, going through
some of the features

with doing a burnout.

-Talk about that a little bit.
-I love burnouts.

Showing you how you do that.

-And burnouts are fine.
-I call them peely outs.

Yeah. You know,
there's a difference between

doing a proper burnout
and why you're doing a burnout

versus just looking cool
and wasting tires.

-A peely out.
-So...

-Yeah, a peely out.
-A peely out.

Okay. There you go.
I think that's fair.

A peely out
is just wasting tires.

A peely out is wasting tires
and looking cool.

Yeah. But the burnout
is actually for purpose.

-It's for a purpose.
-To get the tires hot
and sticky.

-Yeah.
-A peely out
does have its place.

It does, but not really here.

-Yeah.
-[Kevin] Okay. Okay.

-Well, let's do burnouts then.
-Then.

[upbeat music playing]

[engine revving]

I'm first up,
and I fully intend

on showing Kev dog
how it's done.

[man speaking]

-[engine revving]
-[tires squealing]

[Dave] Oh, like that?

-[man speaking]
-[Dave] Okay.

Okay. That was a bit rough,

but the second time
is the charm.

I'm just getting warmed up.

-[engine revving]
-[tires squealing]

[tires screeching]

-Good job, Dave.
-[Dave]
That felt a lot better.

[Danny speaking]

[laughs]

Yeah, but it looked cool
doing it.

[Kevin] Okay.
Let me... Let me try.

It's not your turn anymore.

[suspenseful music playing]

I'm gonna mix
what they call a burnout

and what I like to do
a peely out,

and we're gonna
come somewhere.

It's gonna be like a hybrid.

It's gonna be the best
of both worlds.

I'm gonna get chicks
and be fast.

[engine revving]

[tires squealing]

-[tire screeching]
-[man] Heck, yeah.

-[Dave] That was a peely out.
-[laughs]

That one was for me.

Now, I'm really gonna
hunker down and focus.

All right, so now, we're gonna
use another saying.

-Okay.
-[Danny] Less is more.

That was a peely out.

-[Kevin] Okay.
-[Danny] That was more than

we need for the type of tire
that's on the car.

Okay. I'll try again.

-[engine revving]
-[tires squealing]

[tires screeching]

[Dave] Nice!

-That was gnarly.
-[Kevin] That was awesome.

I mean, you struggle a little
bit with the difference

between a burnout
and a peely out.

-[Kevin] Yeah. Yes, sir.
-[Chuck] I think we've

kinda got
a happy medium there.

[Kevin] Well, I think there's
only one thing left to do.

You're already in the car.
Let's, uh...

-[Kevin] I'm in.
-Kevin first.

Sweet.

[rock music playing]

[Chuck]
First step is stage light.

Second is hard brake.

Third is mash it to the floor.

-Fourth is go.
-Okay.

[engine revving]

Wow!

The driving experience
was awesome.

If this thing gets any faster,
it might pull a retina out.

It just rips. It's straight.

It's awesome.

[upbeat music playing]

[engine revving]

[Kevin] Awesome.

With the short amount
of "research"

and "instruction" that I got,

I really sucked out there,
like, bad.

But I had a lot of fun,
and that's all that matters.

Today, I would say
grading with licensing.

We have one pass

and we have one that still
needs a little work.

Got it. Totally acceptable.

This isn't the end.

Remember we got some
more training to do

on the other side.

[Dave] So I'm really excited
for that,

'cause I love
the straight line stuff.

Don't get me wrong, fellas.

-[Kevin] This is my...
-I'm so much
more of a curvy dude.

This is my jam.

-I love getting around.
-It's your jam.

-And you did great at it, too.
-Yeah.

So, now,
we're gonna turn the tables

a little bit
and do some turning.

[Kevin] But let's go get
your second place trophy.

-It's in the ladies room.
-Hey. Again, thank you.

[Chuck] All right.
Thanks, guys.

-[laughter]
-Oh, okay.

See you, guys.

It's no surprise
that Kevin won that one,

but a lot of these other
technical driving skills

are driving, like,
skillful, like, me.

[Danny] So our first
drill here is a skid car.

[Kevin] Okay.
And it's not the best skid.

[Danny]
Not about the best skid,

it's about the best
recovery from skid.

-[Kevin] Okay.
-[Danny] So you're not trying
to drift the car,

you're just trying
to recover from it.

So as you guys are driving,

you're playing with these
buttons, making the car skid.

[Dave] There's basically
a frame underneath the car

with hydraulics that'll lift
the wheels up off the ground.

And it's gonna be up to you
control that car.

-Okay.
-Okay?

All right? First off,
make sure you keep your eyes

looking where you want
the car to go.

When you're, uh, turning,
if the car starts to skid

to a certain direction,

this one's getting to the
right turn the front wheels

to the right
to counteract that.

[Kevin] To catch the front
end up to the back?

Yeah, but that's what
we're gonna work on.

Let's see who can manage
the car the best.

-I'm excited.
-Go skid.

So it should look like
this here.

Nice and smooth.
Straighten out the wheel.

Very fluent movement
of the car.

That's what
you're looking for.

You're very smooth
with this car.

What are you doing later?

Are you asking me out?

You're supposed
to look this way.

-[laughter]
-Yeah.

[Kevin] You've done this

[Danny] Who's ready
to be the first one up?

-Kev dog.
-I'll give it a shot.

Kev, come on up.

Ten and two, Kev. Ten and two.

How fast should I be going?

About 15 miles an hour
is fine.

-Nice.
-[Dave] Beautiful.

[Danny] As the car is pointed
right towards that green cone,

'cause your eyes were on it.

That's how well
our A works towards.

Turn first.

You got it.
Keep looking there.

Keep looking. Keep looking.

Keep looking.

-Yeah!
-Nice.

[rock music playing]

[Kevin] Not sure I'd even
want to be Dave right now.

You got to compete
against all this?

[Danny]
That's what you wanna do
right there.

Eyes on the prize.

Make sure you keep
your eyes looking

where you want that car to go.

You got it. You got it.
You got it.

-Keep going. Keep going.
-[Kevin laughs]

-[Danny] Yes!
-[Kevin] Woo-hoo!

[Danny]
Man, you're doing awesome.

Keep looking way out there.
Way out there.

[Dave] Nice sauce.

-That was awesome.
-Yeah, you got it, man.

-Great job.
-Thank you.

Way to go. That's good.

It shows how vital
the vision is.

If you're looking
at the right spot...

-Oh, 100%.
-...the car is gonna get--

[Kevin] That was awesome.

-[Danny] Guess who's next?
-[Dave] Oh, yeah.

I've had professional training

and I've had years
of experience,

so I don't wanna
make Kevin feel bad.

I'm gonna take it easy on him.

So Kev did awesome, man.

He really applied
the techniques

-we were talking about and--
-[Dave] Blah, blah, blah.

-[Kevin] He's a dirty [bleep].
-[laughter]

[Danny]
All right, so as you're coming
out the corner,

your eyes are on the cone,
before you get there,

hit the brakes.

It does help if you know
how to drive to start with.

-That was awesome.
-Let's try that one again.

-Let's try that again.
-That was awesome.

-Is there a cone under me?
-[Danny] Oh, no,

you just barely missed it.

[Kevin] Just barely missed it.

[Danny] All right.
Look at the cones.

We'll try it again.
Same thing.

-Way out there.
-[Kevin] Uh, oh, it's way--

[Danny] Hit the brakes. Oop!

Just a little too much, right?

-Yup.
-All right. Okay,

look in your corner.

Look at the sign,
that's all it is.

Way out there, way out there,
way out there.

Hit... Yeah, yeah.

You got it, dude.

Keep your eyes in the corner,

now look way out there
and gas,

gas, gas, gas, gas, gas,
gas, gas.

Ah, hit the brakes.

Ah, gas, gas, gas, ah.

Maybe we should try it without

the hydraulics
from down there.

[Kevin] I get it, I get it.

So we'll just...
Let me see what we can do.

I mean, I'm working
just as hard as you.

I'm down here doing research.
It's important.

I'll talk to Dave.

Have...
He's in a meeting right now.

Okay. Bye-bye.

We're in the middle
of race school

and I just received
a devastating phone call.

I don't know how I'm gonna
break the news to Dave.

Who was that?

So that was the shop.

So what's up
with Roy's Mustang?

So the body shop's
bottlenecked.

Obviously, we need to paint
the engine bay,

so I think the best thing
to do at this moment

is put it on hold
for a second.

-Hmm.
-Let's get through
a couple other things.

Okay.

And let's just
get back to racing.

You know,
this might extend our, uh,

research time, actually.

I think we could learn a lot.

I mean, really,
at the end of the day,

we've already picked
the engine,

the engine's already
in the car.

At this point,
we ought to just
really brush up

on all of the research
questions

that we've ever had since
we've been in business.

Seeing as how we don't have
a Fox Body yet to get back to.

I think we're just
gonna stay here
and do some more research.

-I mean, we're already here.
-Yeah.

-Let's save the gas money.
-Let's go.

Let's do it. [laughs]

[Danny] And gas, gas, gas,
gas, gas, gas, gas, gas.

Ah, hit the brakes.

Ah, gas, gas, gas, gas.

Ah. Hit the brakes.

[Kevin] We're here
at Radford Racing School.

Dave seems a little rusty.

He's done it before.
I don't understand why...

I thought he would be better.

[Danny laughs]

All right.

Let's try it
one more time.

Way out there.

Eyes on the prize.

[Kevin] Oh, yeah.

[Danny] There you go,
yes, yes, yes.

You did it.

-Good job.
-Yay.

There is one thing that's kind
of a little bit of a problem.

I know that Kevin and Danny
are in cahoots against me,

and that's okay.

It's really difficult
to remember

to watch where I wanna be,
like, where I'm going.

It's like that's like...

-I think that's the key
to the whole thing.
-Right.

[Danny] Look way out there,

you go hand over hand
if you need to.

But just keep those hands
on the wheel
as much as possible.

Eyes in the corner,

eyes way out
to the outside edge,

there's a bigger one.

[Kevin] You got it, Dave,
you got it.

[Danny] You got it,
you got this, you got this.

[Kevin] Nice job, buddy.

Nice job.

[Danny] Nice job,
that was awesome.

Eyes on your corner.

[Kevin] Nice job.

All right.
Come to a stop right here.

Woo-hoo.

Good job, buddy.

[Dave] I was getting
pretty discouraged

when I kept spinning
the car around.

And when you started
making sure

I was looking
where I wanted to go next.

And all of a sudden it
was like real natural,

it's like almost every single
time I think I was hitting it.

You can gain a lot more sense
of control over the vehicle

by just telling yourself,
"I gotta look further ahead"

and look where you want
the car to go.

It just made it natural.

All of a sudden, you know,

you're in this problem
here in the skid,

but you just look out
where you want the car to go
and it was easy.

It's the same thing in driving
as it is in life.

Look where you wanna go.

Well, you ready
for the next challenge?

-[Kevin] Let's do it.
-All right.

Now, Kev, you've won
some challenges.

Dave, you've hit some cones.

Kev, you haven't.

I'm a cone lover.

He's a cone k*ller.

Did you say
he's never hit a cone?

Even in truck driving school,
I never hit a cone.

[Danny] So what we'll do
is I'll just show you

the autocross where to go.

We're gonna do some timed runs

and see who can
come out of this better.

[Dave] Awesome.

[Danny] I'll tell when you go.

No, I'll tell you when to go.

All right. Tell me
when to go.

Go.

[upbeat music playing]

[car engine roars]

That was all right.

Sometimes
when your Durango shifts,

it sounds like it farts.

[laughter]

I'm a little nervous
to get back in these demons,

but I think
I got the skills now.

[Danny] All right.
Let's do it.

[car engine roars]

[rock music playing]

[Danny] Kev, let's see
how Dave does here.

A little aggressive
there in that corner.

Uh, once you start to do that,

the back
it wants to slide out.

[car engine roars]

[rock music playing]

All right.

You're good here.

This corner right here...

Oh, he got into traction.

-Right, so...
-[Dave] Nothing surprise me.

-[Danny] He definitely took
a little bit of time off.
-[Dave] Yeah.

This is gonna put a little
pressure on you, so...

-Okay.
-...make it smooth.

Smooth, smoother's faster.

-Let's do it.
Go for it.
-All right.

[tires screech]

[car engine roars]

[rock music playing]

Dave, Kev swore he's gonna
catch up to you here.

I'm rooting for him.

I like that guy.

Whatever you did, do it again.

[Kevin] Yeah.

[Danny] Oh, he...

Man, you guys
are so close right now.

[Kevin] Okay, buddy.

[Danny] There's something
stuck in your door.

-[Dave] Oh, there is?
-[Danny] Yeah.

It's your skirt.

[laughs]

It was a really,
really close run.

Very close.

But, Kev...

-Hey. You got it. Nice.
-Huh!

Nice shot.

It must've been barely.

Yeah, I'm gonna get to work
so much faster now,
it's crazy.

Well, overall,
it was a productive
day, right?

Yeah. Oh, yeah Absolutely.

-Great time.
-But here's the deal.

So get a good night's sleep

because tomorrow
we're gonna combine

all the different things
that we've learned today.

-I'm ready.
-Winner take all?

-Winner take all.
-Cool.

Just like rock, paper,
scissors.

No, you always cheat
at that.

[laughs] Shut up.

Let's go get your trophy.

It's in the women's room.

[dramatic music playing]

[Dave] It's the final day
and the final challenge,

and the winner takes all.

I'm not sure I was

but things are
about to change, kids.

[Danny] All right, gentlemen.

What we've got set up for you
is a little time trial event.

It's gonna be your best time
on our track against

your best time on the track.

So it's gonna be--

my best time's probably
gonna be better.

Oh, we'll have to see
about that, huh?

-I guess we will.
-All right.

[laughter]

I have a small
confession to make.

I may have gotten together

with the guys
here at the track,

and semi-rigged this race
for Dave to lose to me.

[Danny] Here's the deal,

I'll be standing
right in front of one car,

I'll wave the checkered flag,

that's when
the timing starts.

Timing stops when you do
a whole full lap,

come around and go buzzing
by the start-finish line,

I'll hit stop on the watches,

you do a pull off lap,
pull in the pit lane,

we'll get the next driver out.

[Kevin] Anybody knows anything
about Mopars,

there's two key fobs.

One is a little
dialed back.

The other one

is all the ponies
you can handle.

[Danny] Your weapons of choice
are right here.

-Let's do it.
-Put your key in your pocket,

that's yours.

-Thank you.
-This one's yours.

Dave has no clue like always
what's coming at him.

[Danny] Are we ready for this?

-[Kevin] Yup.
-[Dave] Yup.

-[Kevin] Sounds good.
-You're going first.

-[Kevin] Okay.
-Dave let's take your car

off line,
and we'll get ready to roll.

-Okay.
-Let's do it.

[Dave] Good luck, Kev.

[Kevin] Yeah, good luck, Dave.

[suspenseful music playing]

[seatbelt clicks]

Kev, are you ready?

I'm ready.

[Danny] All right.
When I drop this green flag,

-it means go.
-[Kevin] Okay.

You gotta go past
the start-finish line

to finish the time.

Okay.

[Danny] On your mark,
get set, go!

-[Kevin] Hold on.
-[Danny] You're doing great.

Uh, it was in...
It was in park.

[laughter]

It was in park.

Take two.

Okay.

That's should really
actually count.

All right, Kevin,
are you ready to go?

Yes, I'm ready.

On your mark, get set, go!

[car engine roars]

[dramatic music playing]

[tires screech]

[Danny]
He's coming around turn 11,

into the last corner
on this freeway,

we're about to stop this time.

-[Danny] All right.
-All right.

[Dave] The beauty of this
competition is simply this,

we each get two rounds
around the track,

to see what kind of great time
we can come up with.

So if you don't get a perfect
score the first time,

you got a second chance.

So good luck, Kevin.

That was awesome.

Kevin did a great job
out there on the track

for his lap.

So now we're gonna see
what Dave's lap looks like,

and see if he can make
a better time than that.

Hope this doesn't mess
my hair up too bad.

[laughs]

[suspenseful music playing]

I feel like I did okay.

I feel like I might've been
able to do

a little bit faster,
but it was good.

It was smooth.

Kevin just went around
for his first run

and I'm impressed.

He looked really good
out there.

But I think I can beat him.

[Kevin] Dave.

Don't choke, dog.

Hey, if you go off the track,

you're disqualified.

[Danny laughs]

[Danny] All right.
Are you ready for this?

Yup.

On your mark,
get set, go!

[car engine roars]

[upbeat music playing]

[Danny] Goes through
turn one pretty nice.

Turn two...
that's not too bad,
not too bad over the hill

into turn three.

Oh, looks like he got
some good speed there.

Good momentum
through turn 10.

A little late
braking for turn 11.

Onto the front stretch
he goes.

[Kevin] Good job, Dave.

Hey, my hair's
still standing up.

Awesome.

Yeah!

That felt good.

One more race for each of us.

Winner takes all,

and I'm feeling pretty good
right now.

[Danny] All right. You ready?

Second try.

On your mark, get set, go!

[car engine roars]

[dramatic music playing]

[Dave] It's the second
and final round

for Kevin and I,

and I'm pretty sure
I've got this,

but we won't know

until it's all done.

[Danny] All right. Good speed.
Coming over the back hill.

Turn seven.

Over the hump at eight.

Go, go, go, get on the gas,
go, go.

I'm glad Dave's feeling
so confident.

It's gonna make this win
feel so much better.

[Danny] Nice.

A little speed through 11.

All right.

Good run, good run.

[chuckles] That didn't look
that fast to me.

[Danny] On your mark,
get set, go!

[car engine roars]

[dramatic music playing]

[Dave] Win, lose, or tie,

it doesn't really matter
how the numbers stack up,

we still had a great time.

[Danny] All right.
Let's see how he does

coming over the back side
of the hill.

Oh, good speed
coming over six.

[Dave] The best part
of all of this, really,

is the "research"
that we got to do.

[Danny] All right,
coming around 11

onto the front straights.

All right, guys, come on out.

[sighs]

What a blast.

[Dave] I'm telling you.

I don't even know
if I can do anything

for the rest of the day.

I don't think I'm going to.

[laughter]

-Nice.
-[Dave] Holy cow.

Well, first off,
thank you very much.

-Thank you.
-Congratulations.

Thank you.

-Thank you very much.
-You both did

-a stellar job out there.
-Thank you.

Well, we got some final
tallies here to go over, too.

And we gave you each
two tries at it, right?

Yeah.

So...

[Kevin] So before
he says that,

let's just, win or lose,
it doesn't really matter,

we had a great time.

Win or lose, we both won.

We had... We're not
at work.

We're not at the shop,

there's no loser
in that score,

but I'm definitely dying
to find out

if I was faster, though.

No offense.

Here's what we got.

So, Kevin, you went first.

Yeah.

Your first flyer lap
was a 1:09.7 seconds.

-1:09.69, to be exact.
-1:09?

Yup.

-Doesn't sound epic.
-And then your second one,

you got a little faster,

you got down
to a 1:08.59 seconds.

Still okay.

So pretty good.

I mean you got
improvement there, right?

-Sure, yeah, mmm-hmm.
-It's all about improvement.

Dave, you did
a good job out there.

I gotta tell you,

your first run
was a 1:08.06 seconds.

-Good job.
-Thank you.

But then your second run,

you blew the doors off.

-[laughs]
-Right on.

Good job.

-Woo.
-Right on.

-Now.
-Hey, if this whole

drawing cars and building them
doesn't work out,

I think I might
take up racing.

Now we gotta tell you,
there was a little twist here

that was kind of thrown in
at the last moment.

And, uh,

just to let you guys know,

we kinda tricked you, Dave.

Yeah, you only had

-You only had 500 horsepower.
-For real?

I had... Yeah,
I had all the horsepower.

And I still won?

[Kevin] Yeah.

[laughs]

-Oh, what a great day this is.
-Yeah.

-Oh.
-I think I'm gonna...

Uh, yeah... You know,

I really thought
there was gonna be

-some good sportsmanship here.
-Uno-ocho, I love you.

[Kevin] Yeah, this is...
This is what happens
every time.

I don't know how to say 18
in Spanish.

This is what happens
every time.

Well, oh, I was I gloating?

-Yes.
-I'm sorry.

Oh, oh, come on, hey, come on.

Oh, you're right,
good job. Good job.

-All right.
-Good job.

-Hey, great job, man.
-Oh, man, thanks.

I don't why I keep losing
on television.

You know, all in all,
I'm a little bummed out

we weren't able to put
the Mustang on the road

and finish her up,

but, uh, our research
actually went really well.

So with that,
we gotta get on the road,

but you know, I think
we might have enough time

for, uh, just, uh, maybe 18
holes of miniature golf?

[Kevin] I'm not playing you
on anything else.

-I keep--
-What are you talking about?

-I keep losing.
-What about bobsleighing?

-Keep doing this.
-You ever thought about luge?

Pointless.

[Dave] I don't know
if you can really

-cheat at that, can you?
-I think you can.

You just like
put some weight in the front.

[laughs]
