is just one of those.

It's a Mercury Comet,


What makes that is so special?

I've never seen one.

I think I've seen
the front end of these,
but I've never noticed--

The front end
looks very familiar to me.

But this, like,
double body line
here with this trim...

And look at the look
how slender the top is.
The C-pillar is just so small.

And there's just, like,
odd trim everywhere.

-Like there and there.
That is cool.
-So this was a cyclone.

Oh, okay, so that
would be the difference.

A cyclone-styled Comet
is a very rare car as well.

This one in particular,
I've had one of these
before in the shop,

and this one is beautiful.

So the Ford has the Fairlane,
and the Galaxies,
and so forth.

Mercury had the Cyclones
and Mercury Comet.

Oh, so this is Mercury,
not a Ford.

-Yes, exactly.
-I see.

It's a Mercury,
but it has a lot
of the same body lines,

a lot of same styling,
but this is just cool.

I've never seen
this body style.

Mercury's always had
cooler trim
and stuff like that.

A lot of times, you know,
just less common.

-Look at the tail lights
on it.

I've been to so many shows,
I've seen thousands of cars,
but this is a first.

You know, you think
being in the industry

for as long
as we've been in the industry

and you've been
to all the car shows

and all the places
that we've been in...

This would be, like,
something we've seen, right?

But still you come across
something that you never seen.

Almost every single time
we're at a car show,

we come across something else
we've never seen before.

And I think
that that's super cool.

I mean, this is cool.

As old as I am,
and, you know, you...

Inside, there's a display
that we have to check out
before we leave.

So at the Syracuse Nationals,
they have this cool award
that Gene Winfield puts off.

[Dave] Oh, okay.

[Kevin] And
look at these cars.

It's like Gene...

-It's like Gene's touch.
-It's like Gene's here.

Gene Winfield
is an iconic car builder.

He built some
of the craziest customs
for his time.

[Dave] 'Cause
this is truly his style.

You know, the 50s customs,
chopped, sectioned, channeled,
suicide doors,

-pancaked hoods,
curved corners.
-[Kevin] Yeah.

[Dave] I mean, there's some
pretty radical stuff.

I think we've seen
this one before.

[Kevin] We saw this
in Norwalk, Ohio,
a couple years ago.

[Dave] That's right,
it had the '62 Corvette
headlight rings--

[Kevin] And that's what
really caught our eye.

Right from the front,
it had a Corvette look to it,
which was really cool.

[Dave] Yeah, and then
the bed was really cool.
I remember seeing it, too.

I remember that.
That was a nice ride.

This is really beautiful.
Is this '53? '54?

Doesn't look like
it's been sectioned,

but it certainly
has been chopped.

-That looks good too.
-Yeah.

The headlights,
I think these
are Lincoln headlights.

[Kevin] Okay.

[Dave] That is really cool.

They pulled the bumpers in
nice and tight.
Shaved the door handles.

What's up with the show board?

I know. I think that's why
they don't do a show board
on these.

I think they're trying
to make it

to where you
have to kind of guess
what's been done, you know?

[Kevin] Right.

A lot of his style
is crazy customs,

chopping tops,
sectioning cars,
crazy tail lights,

different bumpers.

This guy is just an icon,
and these are the kind of cars
that he built in his time.

'49 to '51 Ford.

-[Kevin] Yep,
I can tell by the hood.
-And it's a business coupe.

So see how long
the trunk lid is?

I like
the color combination, though.
I love the huge lights.

[Kevin] What do you call that?

[Dave] I would call that
a fry sauce or a salmon.

What would you call it?

Don't say pink.

I would say,
like fuchsia-ish.

-Fuchsia?
-Yeah.

Fuchsia is yellow.

I thought fuchsia is pink.

I was just testing.

Oh, this guy.

Look at the work on the hood
that they've done here.

Well, they've done
quite a bit of work. That's...

So the rounded hoods...
That's the same as this one.

-It is.
-So that's a custom thing,
right?

That's a custom thing,
not at the bottom.

That is custom,
and that is also custom.

That's one of the tricks.

Yeah, because normally,
the fender would actually
remove.

This front clips all one part.

And actually, it looks
like it's been grafted
into the rocker.

So they've one-pieced
the whole body.

I kind of feel
like the stuff that we do,

like with the chops
that we've done
and the cool things we do,

like, I see these
and it's like the technology
wasn't there yet.

It's still really cool,
the workmanship is amazing,

but it's like,
I look at the window...

Like, they have to use
stock glass.

[Dave] Yeah.

[Kevin] 'Cause it's curved,
and you can't cut that.

So you have to figure out
a way to manipulate the top

to make it look proportional
and right,

-and still use
a stock piece of glass.
-[Dave] Exactly.

Now, look at these.
These are my jam here.

Sedanettes.

-[Dave] Boom baby. A b*mb.
-[Kevin] Both of them.

[Dave] That thing
has been hammered.

-[Kevin] So this one's
been sectioned a ton, right?
-[Dave] Yep.

And chopped, sectioned,
and it looks like it's also
been channeled.

See the floors up
way higher than the rocker.

It's got a crazy cool stance.

Look how long
this thing looks.

In comparison
to the salmon cars,
how long this actually looks.

[Dave] Mm-hmm.
I think every time what it is

is you lose
the scale of the car when you
chop it and section it.

[Kevin] No, this is cool.

[Dave] It is really awesome.

[Kevin] This one has, like,
a badass attitude.

[Dave] Mm-hmm.
This is very much
an '80s, '90s build.

-[Kevin] It's cool.
-[Dave] Mm-hmm. Super cool.

Now, this one looks
like it's been sectioned,

but just not as much.

[Dave] This looks
like a wedge section.

So they've actually taken
more out of the back
than they have in the front,

which gives it
that kind of look.

And this has a really classic
'50s-looking that...

What do they call it?

Dago, where it looks
like it's a boat taking off.

-[Kevin] Yeah, like a little
taller in the front.
-[Dave] Exactly.

Without looking at that,
what year do you think
this car is?

I'm thinking '51, '52.

I'm thinking '49.

'49?

Well, sadly,
it doesn't tell you
what year the car is.

It's a '63.

It says right
on the license plate.

Look at this gold paint.

It's a 1463,
as a matter of fact.

There's one gold tooth
in the grill.

That's pimp.

[Kevin] Just like a guy
you meet on the wrong side
of the tracks.

Yeah, I'll show you
the train tracks.

Got his little gold teeth
right here. Same.

You know, I gotta see
the back of this thing.

It was very much a b*mb
of like '49 to '51 Chevy.
Maybe '52.

'cause it has to be
in that era.

So I would guess--

Yeah, I think this is really,
truly the beginning era
of massive customizing.

we can obviously speculate

about what's been done
to these cars,

but it's like
one of those things
that you just don't know

exactly what they've done
to the cars.

-And I think that that's
the cool part about it.

The judges are gonna have
their work cut out for 'em
on this stuff.
