[crashing]
Sid's, been in a car accident.
Is he dead?
[machine whirring]
My God!
What condition is he in now?
Critical but stable. But he's paralyzed.
[instrumental music]
- I just want to see him. - I don't want you to.
I can't leave this place now.
I'm afraid if I do, the spell will be broken
and Sid...will never wake up.
- What's the matter? - 'Sid?'
- What's wrong? - 'Sid?'
[theme music]

[male narrator] Previously on "Knots Landing"
Gary Ewing bought an inventory of stolen
auto parts for Knots Landing Motors.
After Gary's boss Sid Fairgate discovered the crime
he and Gary agreed to cooperate with authorities
and the men who sold Gary the parts were arrested.
In exchange for this cooperation
the government provided Sid, Gary
and their families with protection
from mob intimidation or retribution.
[instrumental music]
Hey, what's the hurry? Slow down!
The brakes are gone.
[tires screeching]
I grew up like short down here. I'll try to spin it around.
[horn honking]
[tires screeching]
[crashing]
Oh, my God!
[groaning] Oh, no!
[shushing] Darling.
Go to sleep now. Go on, go to sleep.
Oh!
We'll get your babies back for you.
Come on.
Just sleep.
Good girl, good girl.
[dog barks in the distance]
Look at that fence.
Oh, my God.
[dramatic music]
Don't get too close to the edge.
Hey! Hey, stop!
Whoa!
[tries screeching]
- That thing got a radio in it? - Yeah, what happened?
I don't know. Can she work out.. Forget it. Come on, let's go.
There's an entrance back down over there.
You think that thing's gonna blow up?
I have no idea.
It might.
Let's go.
Now, just stay right where you are, okay?
Okay.
[intense music]
[Jeff] 'I feel I would be neglecting my duty as a parent'
'to allow them to continue living under your care.'
'I am not referring to your social life'
'although I admit that was a contributing factor.'
'It was Olivia who told me about your neighbor, Mr. Averell.'
- Avery. - 'In short.'
[Jeff] 'And in conclusion, I believe'
'I am more capable than you of providing our children'
'with the stable environment they need'
'during their formative years.'
'I say our children, because I feel I have no intention'
'of depriving you of their company forever.'
'Only until I feel the time is right.'
Creep.
[sighs]
Think he really means to keep 'em?
Ah, if he does, he's got his hands full.
[dog barking at distant]
They're in school most of the day.
What's he gonna do when they're not?
Maybe he's got a girlfriend.
I think if he did, he wouldn't have taken the kids.
[chuckles] I sometimes forget how smart you are.
[scoffs] Oh, yeah.
Sure, I'm real smart when it comes to other people's lives.
Isn't everybody?
'Oh, come on, Val, lighten up.'
The worst is over.
Truth well out. Gary fessed up. All is forgiven.
No, it won't be over until the grand jury hearing.
[sighs]
[intense music]
[engine rumbling]
It's all so frightening.
I mean, there's..
'...there's FBI agents all over the place'
watching your kids, opening your mail.
Checking the cars for bombs.
Well, I've got Sid to thank for that.
He's the one who insisted on playing junior G-Man.
Gary tried to talk him out of it.
Yeah, but see, what I-I don't understand
is why did Gary do it in the first place?
We came here with nothing. We had no job, no friends.
'Sid trusted him, completely.'
'Hired him on blind faith.'
'Even made him vice president and how does Gary repay him.'
Behind his back
he starts selling stolen parts.
What happened to Sid?
Abby?
I wanna see Sid.
[Karen] He's on his way over, honey.
- Shouldn't she be asleep? - I think she is asleep.
- Come on, darling. - I don't know..
No, no, no, come on. Come on. It's gonna be okay.
Come on.
[engine rumbling]
[male #1] 'Hey, down there, can you hear us?'
- Salmaggio. - 'I'm coming, hang on.'
[male #1] 'It's on it's way, right now, the ambulance. Hang on.'
[tires screeching]
- There's two of them. - Yeah. Get that door.
Oh, forget it, forget it. Try the other side.
[intense music]
There, let's try this one right here. Ready, one, two, three.
- Go! - Come on, try it again.
- 'Go!' - Come on, again.
- Come on. - It's no good.
While we're doing, you better turn off the engine.
Hey, I think this guy's awake.
Listen to me. The doors are jammed.
If I help you, do you think you can move out the window?
[siren wailing in distance]
I can't move.
What did he say?
I think he said he couldn't move.
[siren wailing]
Okay, just take it easy. The paramedics are here.
[tires screeching]
[indistinct chatter on radio]
A half hour, 45 minutes ago.
- Why, not there yet? - No.
Well, they took that old wreck that Tom was working on.
Maybe, it broke down somewhere.
You got any plate numbers?
[Gary] 'Uh, yeah. Let me get the work order here.'
[paper rustling]
[indistinct chatter on radio]
Don't move. We're gonna get you out of here.
Do you have any pain?
[muffled] Just on the head and face.
- Can you feel anything? - Just my head.
[indistinct chatter on radio]
- Okay. Does your neck hurt? - No.
Try not to move.
I don't think I can move.
This one's dead.
Get the jaws out here and cut this man out.
He's got a neck injury.
I want to move him as little as possible.
[male #2] 'Okay, over there.'
Ready.
Give me a start.
[machine whirring]
Free the line.
[tires screeching]
Officer, what happened?
[indistinct chatter]
One moment, sir. Well, go right through.
[siren wailing]
[male #3] 'Check out that perimeter over there.'
Did you know that when Thomas Carlyle
wrote the "French Revolution," his housekeeper accidentally
threw out the entire manuscript?
Yeah, threw the whole thing right in the fire
when she was cleaning up.
So, Thomas Carlyle sat down and wrote
the entire book all over again from scratch.
I hope he fired his housekeeper first.
[chuckles] Oh.
It's only a ten minute drive.
I don't know what's taking him so long.
Well, maybe he hasn't left yet.
[telephone dial]
[phone beeping]
Busy.
How bad is he hurt?
Paramedic says he's lucky to be alive.
[machine whirring]
I don't know what he means by that exactly.
'Looks to me like a broken neck.'
Uh, wh-where are they taking him?
Beach view.
Careful with that top. Watch those edges.
Alright, bend it back here.
- How's that? - That's it.
[indistinct chatter]
[Gary] 'Did you talk to Karen, yet?'
No, I thought you'd wanna do that.
Right. Uh, how's Salmaggio?
He's dead. I'll see you later.
Take it easy. Small.
- Get his head here. - Careful.
Watch-watch his back.
You got to strap him into there.
[indistinct chatter]
There cut it. Strap him in.
- Strap. - Okay.
- I got the back. - Alright.
[indistinct announcement]
There's been an accident. We're going home.
- I'm parked right over here. - Okay.
- Better let me check it out. - The car's been here all day.
[metal rattling]
[engine revving]
[instrumental music]
[instrumental music]
- I'll just be a minute. - No, no, no, don't worry.
You have plenty of homework, so, you just take your time.
[car horn honking]
[instrumental music]
What's the matter?
Sid's been in a car accident.
What?
Is he dead?
Just let me know if he's dead.
He's not dead.
'Look, uh, the car went over the side of the beach road.'
Bonners called me from there.
Salmaggio was k*lled, but Sid is alive.
In fact, he was conscious when they got to him.
'They've taken him to Beach view.'
What shape is he in?
Come on, Gary. How bad is he?
Uh, Bonner said he thought that his neck was injured.
- Injured or broken. - He didn't know.
Look, they're on the way to the hospital with him right now.
'Come on. I'll drive you there.'
Do you want me to drive you?
No, someone has to be with the kids.
Diana will be home any minute and, uh
Eric has practice until 4:30.
But one of the agents has to pick up Michael.
[Gary] 'Gilpatrick's here.'
I don't want the kids at the hospital, Val.
No, we'll keep 'em here at the house.
Gary, you stay with Abby until she wakes up.
Karen, w-wouldn't you rather I drive you?
No. Sid wouldn't want her to be alone.
I'll call you from the hospital.
[Val] Call.
[intense music]
[tires screeching]
Could you check it again, please?
I don't seem to have a Fairgate.
I don't believe it.
Are you sure you've got the right spelling?
He's my husband, for God's sake.
Of course, I've got the right spelling.
- Are you sure? - Yes, I am sure.
- Mrs. Fairgate. - Where is he?
With me, please. He's not on the records.
We don't want people know he's here.
Can't be too careful.
That wasn't fair, I apologize.
You're entitled We blew it.
I'm sorry about your partner.
Where is he?
They're still working on him in emergency.
Now, they said we could stay down--
Hi, I'm Mrs. Fairgate. Where's my husband?
Well, he's still in emergency, but they should be taking him--
- I got to see him. - Mrs. Fairgate.
You can't go in there, Mrs. Fairgate
you can't see him now. That's..
Watch it, lady.
Hospital regulations. Mrs. Fairgate.
Lady, you can't come in here.
Please, Mrs. Fairgate.
[machine whirring]
Oh, my God!
Oh!
[panting]
[Karen] 'What's that thing attached to his skull?'
Uh, the tongs.
He's in traction there to keep
his neck stabilized and reduce the fracture.
Won't he feel them when the anesthetic wears off?
Mm-mm. There are no nerves in the skull.
So, as bad as they look, they don't cause him pain.
Your husband has suffered a fracture
dislocation of the cervical spine.
Now, from the cuts on the top of his head
he must have struck the windshield on impact
severely compressing the vertebrae here at C5 and 6.
Now, these tiny white flecks are-are bone splinters from C6.
This one may be compressing the dura.
Now, that's the casing around the cord.
- Are you alright? - Fine. I'm fine.
If I'm getting too technical..
What condition is he in now?
Critical but stable.
But there are a couple of fractured ribs
and a collapsed lung.
We put a chest tube in to re-expand the lung.
Now, we'll be monitoring very closely for the next 72 hours
but I wouldn't expect any significant
return within the next few days.
Return?
Well, he's paralyzed.
Oh, my God, I'm sorry.
- 'I thought you knew.' - No.
There's a chance that it's temporary.
But you don't know.
At this point, there's no way of assessing
how much damage has been done to the cord.
Can I see him now?
Yeah, he's right down the hall.
'If there's any more questions I can answer--'
Thank you.
[door close]
[indistinct chatter]
Sid Fairgate, please.
Dr. Akura said he was down the hall.
- Mom? Where's dad? - We wanna see him?
Wha-what, did the car go off the cliff?
- Kids. - Is he gonna be okay?
- Is he awake or what? - Kids!
- Is Sal on the hospital too? - Oh, boy.
Mike, will you shut up and just let her talk?
- You shut up. - Alright, now.
- Karen, look, I am sorry. - I know.
It's not her fault.
We could have made it here by ourselves.
- It's-it's okay. - If she didn't take us.
It's okay. Now, listen.
I want you all to go home.
- Come on. - You mean we can't see him?
I haven't seen him myself. He's asleep.
Is he okay?
He's going to be fine.
- He was very lucky. - How lucky?
How's Sal?
I'll be home in a little while
and then I'll explain it all to you then.
Well, is Sal in the same room as dad?
Cool it, Michael. She can't talk right now.
I want you to listen to Val. She's in charge, okay?
Yeah, I-I thought I'd take 'em to dinner.
Oh, thanks. I'll give you some money.
Oh, come on now, Karen, don't be silly.
Are you okay?
Hey, mom, when are you gonna be home?
Soon.
I'm Mrs. Fairgate.
I'm sure you are, but would you mind
showing me some identification?
- Driver's license okay? - Sure.
[phone rings]
I'm sure sorry about this. Go right in, Mrs. Fairgate.
Thanks.
[nurse #1] 'I think he should rest easier now with the bed.'
[machine beeping]
- You got it? - Yes. Okay.
Gentle.
Hey. God, you look like you went over a cliff in a car.
Well, come on and kiss me. I won't break.
[machine beeping]
How do you feel?
I feel high as a kite.
How do I look?
[chuckles] Like, Frankenstein.
Did Dr. Akure explain about all this stuff then?
Yeah.
Looks so medieval.
- It really doesn't hurt you? - Oh, no.
Only when I tap dance.
[chuckles] Oh.
Hey, he says you're stable.
Oh, that's very nice, isn't it?
[chuckles]
Do the kids know?
They were just here, I sent them home with Val.
Good, I don't think they really ought to see me like this.
No.
So...how are you?
- Me? - Yeah, you.
[chuckles] I'm at my best in a crisis.
And this isn't even a crisis.
No.
Karen.
You know, I..
I can't feel anything from my neck down.
Dr. Akura said we shouldn't even expect
any return during the next few days.
What else did he tell you?
I didn't...ask him very much.
Yeah, well I did.
Look, I, I think that we've just better come right out
and say what's on our minds, okay.
Okay.
Okay, here's the deal.
If the spinal cord is just partially damaged
or just swollen, maybe
well, paralysis will go away in four or five days.
Everything's gonna be cool.
But..
..if the cord is severed all the way through..
Well, you know, it's-it's not exactly like a phone line.
You can't just run in there and...tie it up and repair it.
Do you understand?
Well..
...we have to take this one step at a time, that's all.
I just want you to understand what might be ahead.
We don't know what's ahead.
[exhale]
I love you very much.
Me too.
[Abby] 'Look, I don't care what your orders are.'
'I'm his sister, and I wanna see him.'
[officer #1] 'Look, miss, nobody, and I mean nobody.'
- 'I'm not nobody.' - You want to see her?
[Abby] 'I'm his blood relative.'
I wouldn't wanna try to stop her.
[Abby] 'My only brother, who..'
[officer #1] 'Lady, I'm warning you.'
Karen, will you please tell this overgrown--
The man is just trying to do his job, calm down.
I'm just doing my job.
- Alright, fine. Can I see him? - Yes, you can.
Officer, it's okay. She's his sister.
[sighs]
- Go ahead in. - Thank you.
- Hey. - Hey.
- Hi. - How you doing?
Well, I think I ought to be careful, so..
...a kiss for you.
Thanks.
Sid, I know you like music
but don't you think they could have gotten
you a better headset?
[chuckles]
Do you have any new word from the kids?
No. Nothing yet. Just that stupid tape.
[chuckles]
What's so funny?
[chuckles] That tape.
I listened to it again because I-I wanted to try
and catch Jeff in some kind of slip or something.
You know him, he's much too meticulous for that.
That's what makes him such a great accountant
[chuckles] and such a lousy husband.
Suddenly, I got this mental picture of Brian
with his toy trumpet and his worm collection
and it just made me laugh.
Well, Olivia's the one I wouldn't mess with.
I give him about a week with her.
Oh, I don't know, he's pretty stubborn, I'd say two.
No, one week. You wanna bet?
- Five bucks? - Right.
[chuckles] Hey, you're on.
How are we doing?
Oh, hello, I'm Dr. Akura.
Hello, Dr. Akura. I'm Abby Cunningham, Sid's sister.
How is he?
Your brother's got a fracture of the cervical spine.
'We're trying to reduce it.'
If you got a cramp in your neck, let me know.
Then I can give you another shot.
Okay.
What is that thing on his head?
Would you like us to wait outside?
Just for a few minutes.
Is this what's usually done
with this kind of injury?
Abby.
- Nurse. - I'll be back, Sid.
Thanks for coming, sis.
Thanks.
[woman on PA] 'Dr. Silver, telephone.'
'Dr. Silver, telephone.'
- You want a cup of coffee? - He's paralyzed.
Well, Dr. Akura said it may be temporary.
Gary didn't tell me that.
Gary doesn't know. Nobody knows.
[indistinct announcements]
Karen, who's that Dr. Akura?
- What do you mean? - He's awfully young, isn't he?
Yeah. So?
What do you know about him? What are his qualifications?
Abby, Sid was just brought in here six hours ago, I-I hardly--
I think you ought to bring another doctor.
Well, how do you know Dr. Akura isn't a very good--
I don't. Neither do you.
That's why I think we should get the best neurologist available
and-and get him in here to confirm the diagnosis.
Yeah, well, I-I am gonna do that, Abby but..
...I saw the X-rays and-and believe me--
Karen, you're not a doctor.
To tell you the truth, I'm surprised
you let him bring him here.
I didn't choose this hospital, Abby.
The ambulance just brought him here.
Then you should have him transferred.
- He shouldn't be moved. - Says who, that Dr. Akura?
Why would Dr. Akura lie about something like--
I'm not saying, he's lying, Karen.
But he's-he's young and he's inexperienced.
- And another doctor-- - I don't want another doctor.
Maybe another doctor wouldn't
agree with the way he's handling--
Abby, you saw the way he's rigged up in there.
Do you think they can get him in and out of an ambulance?
They got him in here, didn't they?
This is a small community hospital.
It-it's not even a teaching hospital.
- They don't have the staff-- - Abby, he cannot be moved!
[sobbing]
Karen, I just wanna make sure he's got the best care.

She's here now. Hold on, Mr. Ewing.
Mrs. Fairgate.
She can't come to the phone right now, Mr. Ewing.

Mrs. Fairgate. Mrs. Fairgate.
Mrs. Fairgate, why don't you give yourself a break?
Go home for a while. Take a nap and get some breakfast.
I'm gonna wait to-wait to see Dr. Akura.
The doctor's in surgery. He won't be here till after lunch.
I just need a cup of coffee.
There is nothing you can do here, Mrs. Fairgate.
Now, you're going to make yourself sick, if you--
Look, I'm not going home, alright?
[door open]
[Richard] 'You're not really gonna drink that, are you?'
'After spending nine hours'

I don't believe it.

Oh, Richard, these are incredible.
I, I don't know what to say.

[laughs]
Go on, eat your croissant.
'I did some checking for you.'
You lucked out with this Dr. Akura.
Johns Hopkins fellow, UCLA residency.
From what I hear, if he weren't so young
he'd be running the whole department.
Oh, Richard, I'm so glad
and I really like him.
You look like you could use about two pints of blood.
'You wouldn't wanna go home for a while, would you?'
[woman on PA] 'Report to OR floor.'
[Richard] 'That's what I thought.'
Why don't you let me handle the paperwork
and the insurance stuff and maybe find you a housekeeper?
So, you know, the kids are being picked up and fed.
If you could just handle the insurance.
How are you fixed for money?
You know, between Laura's real estate
and my new job, we're rolling in it.
Offers always open.
Thanks.
Bet you'd feel about 200% better with a hot shower
and a clean set of clothes.
Don't tell me you have a dress in there.
Okay. Ten pants, got it.
Long sleeve cotton pullover.
Yeah, second drawer on the right, okay.
Yes, Richard, of course I'm writing all this down.
Okay, let me see.
Uh, I'm gonna check in on the kids
and then I'm gonna drop the boys off at school
so, that ought to put me there about, um, say, 9:30, okay?
No, of course I won't forget the underwear.
Okay, bye-bye.
What's Richard doing there?
[chuckles] Would you believe it?
He just brought Karen breakfast.
Now, he's hunting her up a shower.
Wants me to bring her some clean clothes.
She been there all night?
Yeah.
Richard says she looks like she's about ready to come apart.
Gary, what are you looking for?
Where do you keep the shopping bags?
Right over there by the fridge.
What do you want a shopping bag for?
Let me bring you the clothes, okay?
Sure.
[paper rustling]
- Gary? - Huh?
You're being too hard on yourself.
Gary, you are.
You are not responsible for this accident.
Accident?
Look, there is no way of knowing
if somebody messed with that car or not.
Listen, it was old. It was being repaired.
Now, maybe those brakes just...went out.
Yeah, maybe.
And if it wasn't an accident
Sid knew what he was getting into.
He knew the risks.
- It was his choice. - Choi..?
That's like saying a bull has a choice
when you wave a red flag in its face.
I could give you a million reasons
and you'd still feel the same way, wouldn't you?
Yeah, I guess I would.
[sighs]
Darling, it just tears me apart
to see you doing this to yourself.
It can't be helped.
I know, but it doesn't do any good.

I just want to see him, and then I'll go.

Ah, doctor said that nobody should--
I'm not gonna wake him up. I just want to see him.

[Karen] 'He's in a coma.'

Same.
They have any idea?
Oh, they've got lots of ideas.
Possibilities.
Hi potassium is lower, that could cause it.
'Or, uh, a spasm in the vertebral'
arteries or a cerebral contusion
unrelated to the spinal injury.
Learning an awful lot about medicine.
Uh, can you translate that.
[woman on PA] 'Dr. Mondonio report to intensive care.'
They don't know what's wrong.
'They're giving him drugs'
'to reduce the swelling of the brain'
'and the spinal cord.'
And some potassium, too.
If that doesn't work, they'll do a...CAT Scan.
X-ray, the brain.
Can I see him?
Not much to see unless you can read an electrocardiogram.
But...if you want, I'll, uh, I'll talk to the nurse.
No, no, no. That-that's alright.
Karen, is there anything I can do?
For me? No.
No, I mean, do the shopping, go to the bank--
Gary, I cannot deal with you right now. Don't you understand?
I can't even face my own kids.
[Karen sobbing]
Karen, I..
- I don't want-- - Yes, you do.
You wanna be blamed or forgiven
and I don't have the time or the energy for either.
I am not a religious person, so this may sound crazy
and mystical coming from someone like me..
...but I can't...leave this place now.
I'm afraid if I do, the spell will be broken and Sid..
...will never wake up.
Your coming here is a distraction
it keeps me from doing what I have to do.
The one thing, the only thing that you can do for me right now
is leave me alone.
'I'm sorry.'
Oh, I understand how you feel.
I wish I did.
[woman on PA] 'Dr. Fennerman, report to radiology.'
'Dr. Fennerman, report to radiology.'
I got some Roquefort the fridge.
You wanna add that to the dressing?
- Great. - I hate Roquefort.
You hate salads. So, what do you care what we put on it?
No, I just hate tomatoes.
Michael, the fork goes on the left.
- Onions.. - 'Well, no, Eric.'
He's, uh, not at the house.
Uh, he's not at Kenny and Ginger's or the Avery's
or with Abby. I called the hospital.
Oh, you didn't talk to Karen, did you?
No, the nurse. Nobody's seen him.
Well, he wasn't in school, either.
Yeah, but I took him to school.
Oh, he went, he just didn't stay.
You think he might have gone to a friend's?
He probably went somewhere where he could be alone.
But he'll be back. Really, don't worry about it.
But where do you think he might have gone?
The beach, the stadium.
I'm not sure.
Do you think we ought to call the police?
Um, no. Not yet.
[instrumental music]
- 'Isn't he married?' - 'Yeah, but he's so cute.'
Don't you think he's cute?
I used to know his wife when we worked at All Angels.
[nurse #3] 'No kidding. What's she like?'
- Sweet. Kind of shy. - I know what she'd look like.
Wait a minute. Now, didn't he show you a picture--
Did Dr. Akura call?
I haven't heard from him yet.
Well, he said he'd be here at 7:30, it's ten after 9:00.
Maybe he had an emergency.
You mean he's in the emergency room?
I don't know where he is, Mrs. Fairgate.
- Well, can't you find him? - 'If he's in the hospital.'
Well, please see if he is in the hospital, alright?
[indistinct chatter]
[music on pinball machine]
[clanking]
You winning?
Oh, I won a couple.
- How many games you played? - Tonight, 12.
When I was in high school, we used to hang out
at a place called Dwight's
that had a pinball machine I could never beat.
Drove me crazy, I must've played 200 games on that thing.
Then one night, I was studying for this big final exam.
I took a break. Dropped by Dwight's for a hamburger.
Naturally, I played the machine and I won.
And I won again.
I tell you, there must've been something wrong with it.
'Cause I played 16 games on that thing.
And test or no test, I had to play them out.
[laughs] And when they closed up the place, I had eight games left.
I, uh, flunked the exam and never beat that machine again.
[indistinct chatter]
My mom sent you to look for me?
No, she's still at the hospital.
Well, you're not gonna tell her?
No reason to.
Why don't you tell us what's going on?
I guess she doesn't wanna frighten you.
Is my dad gonna die?
He's been in a coma since yesterday.
'If he doesn't come out of it soon, he might die, yes.'
She didn't tell us that.
I shouldn't have either.
But I don't think there's anything worse
than what you don't know.
Well, I won't say anything.
[Gary] 'Okay.'
You wanna go home now?
No, let's play one game and then we'll go, okay.
- Alright. - Alright.
- It's been a while. - Alright.
[machine beeping]
I'm sorry I blew my top.
But I've been waiting since 7:30.
Nineteen year old kid, drunk
dives into an empty swimming pool.
Happens all the time. Broken neck.
Concussion. Couldn't get to a phone.
I'm sorry.
Why don't you get out of here, Mrs. Fairgate and get some rest?
You're not doing your husband any good by being here.
If you keep this up, you won't be any good
to your children, much less yourself.
When will he come out of it?
Well, we've been giving him drugs to reduce
the swelling on the brain and spinal cord
which might have caused the blackout but..
...there may be a brain injury totally unrelated
to the fracture dislocation.
All the tests that have come back so far are negative.
I know all that!
I've ordered a CAT scan for as soon as possible.
Can you do it tonight?
Let me drive you home, Mrs. Fairgate.
Can't you do the CAT scan right now?
Because we don't have the apparatus.
'The mobile unit is on its way.'
What do you mean, it's on its way?
It's an expensive piece of equipment.
We don't have one in this hospital.
'A couple of hours isn't gonna make much difference.'
Every minute that Sid is not awake makes a difference.
I know about comas.
It's not like in the movies where people wake up
after days and days looking rosy cheeked and-and rested.
They wake up half alive vegetables.
Mindless. Brainless.
[Dr. Akura] 'Now, that's not true.'
That is true.
Something must be done.
I want answers now. Tonight.
And if you can't give them to me
I'm gonna take him to another hospital.
You do that, and there's a good chance
he'll die in the ambulance. Is that what you want?
I want..
I..
[sobbing] ...want..
Alright, okay. Come on, let's sit down.
You'll be okay. You'll be alright.
Sit down.
[sobbing]
Alright, now.
I'm gonna give you a sedative.
I'm gonna give you a sedative and then
I'll drive you home, alright?
[sobbing]Mm.
[Sid] 'Oh.'
I had my tonsils out yet, mommy?
Sid!
[instrumental music]
Are you crying, Karen?
No, I'm better now.
My throat feels so dry.
Did they operate yet?
You were asleep.
I don't feel very rested.
But you're awake now.
Am I gonna be alright now?
Oh!
Yes, sweetheart.
You're gonna be fine.
[chuckles]
[theme music]
