01x13 - Major Disagreement

Major Disharmony

Gentlemen, please pay attention.

The concert is on this afternoon,
so do all you can.

Please keep up the tempo.
-Sorry, Mr. Lully.

-The rhythm, sir!

Resume.

-The music de M. Lully is a delight.

-Yes, it is.

I regret that Lupin isn't with us
to hear it too.

-I've already told you no! No.

-But, Mr. Lully, please.
-No!

-You're right, Belfort,
it's a joy to share

the things we love
with your best friends.

Right, Gazette?

-What the...

-Stop everything!

Enough is enough!

-Ariane, are you all right?

Oh, what have I done?
Oh, no. Gazette.

-Angry cats out there!

[font color="#00ff00"]"Hurry, hurry!"
Let's get on with it.

Enough wasted time.
-Everything alright?

-What the hell was she thinking
to throw herself at me?

She could have hurt me.
-I was no idea.

I'm sure she didn't do it on purpose.

Ariane is a cat,
but she is also your best friend.

-I thought she was.
But look how she shredded this cushion.

It's in pieces!
I don't know if I'll ever trust her again.

I was so scared!
-Oh, Gazette.

Would you be so kind to snivel
in silence? You're preventing me

from listening to the music.

-Well, the cat looks depressed.

-If you'd seen what happened,
it was absolutely dreadful!

Ariane attacked Gazette.
-What?

-Gazette almost got hurt.

-What?
-It's true.

I just don't understand what's
happening to me right now.

Since this morning, I've destroyed

and even the work of my Master Vauban.

I'm very worried
-Oh dear.

-It's okay, don't panic.

You're a cat, it's normal for
you to do weird cat things.

Yeah. Weird stuff,
cats know all about it.

-This time, it's different,
something's not right.

You saw it Belfort, I could have hurt
my best friend!

Now she's afraid of me.

-Don't worry, Lupin and I are
going help you make up with her.

-I doubt the cat accepts our help,
it's not her style.

-Normally, I don't
need your help.

but here, I'm in danger
of losing my best friend.

-All right, cat, if you
insist, we'll lend a hand.

-It's the protocol of good relations
between good people...

-Ugh... the protocol of blah, blah blah.

It's not her fault, her alley cat
instincts are coming out.

She needs to be taught
to control herself.

-It's not good enough, she has to ask for...
-Enough!

Belfort, teach me this
protocol you're talking about.

And Lupin, teach me
how to control my instincts,

I want to put every

chance on my side.
Thank you very much.

-Well, it's easy as pie.
Repeat after me.

"My dear Gazette,
please forgive me."

-Do you want me to say
all those words in order?

-If you want to make up with Gazette, yes.

-No, I've never asked forgiveness
from anyone.

-Does that surprise anyone here?

-Ariane, you're going to
have to make an effort.

-Sorry.

-So-rr-y.

Your turn, Ariane.

-Sor...

-Sorry, I think I didn't hear you.

Is there something you want to tell me?
-No, I'm sorry.

-Sorry.

Well, are you happy?

-Progress!

-Ah! Butterfly!

-There's still work to be done. If
you don't mind, admire the expert.

-You're right, Ariane needs
to learn to control herself.

-It's not easy to resist the
urge to claw at the cushions...

or on your friends.
But you have to keep control.

You don't have to be in
control all the time,

just when there's a risk of
getting out of hand. We breathe.

It helps keep me calm.

Such self-control,
my dearest Lupin.

I really admire you.

-Yeah, you can.
Years of practice.

OK, cat, I've prepared
a little test for you.

You're going to walk straight
ahead, and I need you to stay calm.

-Okay, got it.

-Ready to go?
Go for it.

Test number 1, no
touching the light.

-Light test, perfect.
Keep it up, cat!

Test number 2, don't knock off
objects on purpose.

-Don't knock off stuff from
the shelves, OK.

That's a weird reflex.

-Don't shred the cushions, perfect.

-Hi there!
-Hi!

-There you are.

-Don't shred your
buddies, 20 out of 20.

-Oh, bravo, Ariane!

-Perfect!
-I am... ready!

Thank you, both of you. I hope
Gazette can forgive me.

-Everything's going
to be fine, I'm sure.

-No! No! No!
This is Versailles,

not a circus!

Basir, you and
your fife, get out!

-Oh, please, Mr. Lully.

-For the 100th time since
this morning, I say no!

No fife
in my baroque orchestra.

-They'll never give me a chance.
-Let's start again.

Here we go with your glossy wood!

-Gazette, are you there?

Did you pass the word around to prevent
me from listening to Mr. Lully's music?

These youngsters.

-Fear not, M. Chevalier,
we won't be long.

And I promise you
we'll be discreet.

-Dear Gazette, I beg you
to forgive me.

I'm... I'm so sorry.

-Oh, Ariane!

-Good heavens
-Oh no.

-I already said to you no!

-What's happening to me?
It's happened again.

-I don't know, Ariane,

it's beyond comprehension.
-We've hit a snag.

There's something
wrong with her, but what?

-Let's ask some other animals,

maybe some suffer from the same thing,
and could help us.

Like you and your allergy
to the word... "moon".

-Yeah,
I know what you mean.

It's a good idea.
-So, shall we go?

I'm waiting for you.

-Weird behavior?
Can you elaborate?

-Don't you ever lose it?

-Yes, it does.

It happens all the time.

-Whatever, forget it. They
really have birdbrains.

-Think, Mrs Rosa,

this is important.
Strange behavior, or something strange.

-Let me think about it. Oh, I'm
sometimes subject to sleepwalking.

-Is there anything else
more unusual?

Like a major tantrum,

that would happen for no reason.
-What a lack of respect!

Who do you think she is?
-Mme Rosa is a socialite, a noble pachyderm,

not a wild beast!

-I confess, I sometimes spit, I
mean, it happens all the time.

I can't help it. But
hey, it's okay, relax!

-Oh, sorry, [font color="#00ff00"]"friends"!

Oh, come on, open your eyes,

it's as plain as day,

your friend Ariane has rabies.

-Yes, she looks strange.

-Ariane isn't
as usual these days.

-What are they keeping from us?

-I've always said Ariane
had a raging temper.

-Yes, rabid.

-Additionally, rabies is a
highly contagious disease.

-No wonder,

with kitties.

-I officially decree that Ariane
is banned from the menagerie.

Immediate sanction.

-Banned?

-[font color="#00ff00"]"Calm down friends".
We have no proof that

the pussycat has rabies.

-Whatever, we don't want her, out!
-Well said, out!

-Come on, cat, we're leaving.
They're just a bunch of snobs.

-Clyster, bloodletting,
bubonic plague".

Alas, still nothing on rabies.
There must be something.

Well.

-Does it itch or tickle?

She looks normal, for a cat.

-Oh no, Ariane!

-Remember the training!
Breath!

-Ariane, calm down! Ariane!

-No, I did it again!

I've definitely got rabies.

I... I've become a monster!
Ariane, you'll be all right.

Don't give up. It'll be fine.
-There's gotta be a way.

-Yeah, we just need to
figure out what it is.

-Enough, by staying here, I'm
putting all my friends in danger.

I'm going to live the
rest of my days alone.

Deep in the forest,
like a wild beast.

-She's gone to live in the forest?
For good?

-Good riddance.
-Mr. Chevalier,

I won't allow you to say
mean things about my best friend!

How dare you!

-Quiet! I can't hear the music.

Oh, that horrible fife again!
Why?

There aren't any, usually,
in M. Lully's music.

It ruffles my feathers,
with its high notes.

It's unbearable.

-A fife that's usually
not part of the music,

playing horribly high tones?

-Could it be that noise,
that makes the cat go crazy?

-Yes! The fife was
playing high notes...

-...each time she was losing her marbles.

-If this instrument isn't part of
the orchestra, where does it come from?

-How many times do I have to say it?

-M. Lully, I beg you,
please let me play.

I've been rehearsing for
months your sublime music.

I would so much like to be able
to play at least once in my life!

My mother admires you so much.

-Basir, are you deaf?
For the thousandth time, no!

It's unheard of, there's no stopping you.
You're annoying my musicians.

Well, I suppose I have
no choice but to say yes.

-Hooray!

-But I warn you, one
false note and you're fired.

-What?

-So the cat doesn't have rabies.

-Ariane is allergic to
high notes of Basir's fife.

-She didn't attack me on
purpose to attack me, I knew it!

I'm so relieved!

-To prevent the cat from doing it
again, we've got to stop Basir...

-...from playing his fife.

-I'll take care of it.

-Thank you Gazette.
Meanwhile, we're going to look for Ariane.

-We're going to make it, my friends.
Onward!

-That's it, good riddance. Get lost!

-My fife attracts rats!

I'll never touch a fife
again in my life, I promise.

-Mission accomplished.

-Le chat!
-Ariane!

-Kitty, kitty!

-47 minutes.

-Ariane!

-Show your face!

Ariane!

-No! Don't come any closer!

-We need to talk to you.

Will you stop?

-Ariane, you don't have rabies.

I promise.

-Yeah.

-Maestro Lully's page turner,
it's Father who'll be proud of me.

-Dear friends,
all's well that ends well.

-Hush, there are some
who want listen to the music.

-Please excuse me.

-I was so afraid that
you'd never forgive me.

-When I think of what that
nasty fife has done to you... to us.

I beg your forgiveness,
Ariane, for doubting you.

You are my best friend
for the rest of my life.

-In the time of the Sun King,
electronic musical instruments didn't yet exist.

In Versailles, music was played by
the violin, the harpsichord,

the flute and the oboe. These instruments together
forming the baroque orchestra.

In those days, the conductor would tap
the floor with a stick to mark the rhythm.

One day, the great composer Jean-Baptiste Lully
injured his toe with his baton.

The infected wound led to his death.

As a patron of the arts, King Louis XIV founded the Royal Academy of Music,

a place of excellence, designed to welcome great musicians.

Famous composers of the time were
J.-B. Lully and M.-A. Charpentier,

specialists in Baroque music.

They composed
tunes that can still be heard at Versailles

and even as the opening song of the Eurovision Song Contest.
