06x03 - Hanging Fire

Post by bunniefuu »

I had to do it. He was holding a g*n on Mrs. Ewing

and he was gonna k*ll her.

-Is that what happened? -Mm-hmm.

The only person who knows what happened on that yacht,

other than Gregory Sumner, is Abby Ewing.

-Ask her. -I will.

-I thought I knew you. -Valene, what's gotten into you?

All along you've had another family.

I'm gonna do business my way, fairly and honestly.

I want you to meet our new partner.

[soft music playing]

[theme music playing]

[tense music playing]

[gurney rattling]

[sirens blaring]

[Abby] Gary.

[gasps]

[Gary sighs]

[both sigh]

[indistinct chatter]

[officer] Mark St. Clair.

And could you see that the night nurse

-gets one of them, too? -I certainly will.

It's not as though we need the bed.

Thank you very much, Mrs. McKenzie.

-Good luck to you. -[Karen] Thank you.

All I'm saying is that...

Is that you want me to gamble with my life.

...is that there is no reason for you

to leave the hospital so soon.

I can recuperate at home.

[Dr. Garner] You know, your husband...

-You promised me... -I haven't told him...

but I wish you would.

You haven't told anyone, have you?

Dr. Garner, my head is clear, I'm thinking fine.

I know what I'm doing. I don't need to talk about it.

When you finally get the kind of symptoms

that do impress you, then you will.

I can't afford your odds.

[keys jingling]

I can't believe it.

What? Wait a minute, don't tell me, don't tell me.

Let me see, he has a relative

who uh, who needs the job more than you do.

No, I'll be singing there four nights a week.

-You haven't heard? -[Laura] Heard what?

It's all over the news.

Greg Sumner just k*lled Mark St. Clair.

[tense music playing]

[siren wails]

What happened?

[indistinct chatter]

I had to do it.

I was the first officer at the site.

He had a g*n on Mrs. Ewing and he was gonna k*ll her.

Nothing in there says otherwise.

-Is that what happened?

Mm-hmm.

-Whose g*n did he use? -Mark St. Clair's.

[sighs]

-Where'd he get the g*n? -Mack, back off.

-Not now, Mack. -When?

Huh? When?

-[Gary] Can we go? -All right.

If I need a statement from you, where do I find you?

At the ranch.

[dishes rattles]

Ooh, there's nothing worse than coming home to a messy house.

I didn't know where you'd gone.

I've been looking all over for you.

Karen's gonna be home any minute.

Michael and Eric went together.

I know that.

Mama, are we gonna talk about what happened last night?

If you're gonna be in my way, you might as well lend a hand.

Mama, would you stop

what you were doing and listen to me?

-I can hear you. -What did that woman do to you?

-What woman? -Joshua's mother.

Your sister.

How long has it been since she died?

Years.

She must have done something terrible

if you still feel so strongly about it.

What was it?

I said I didn't want to talk about her.

Mama, you didn't see Joshua after you went downstairs.

You didn't see what you did to him.

I can't help it if the truth hurts.

[Valene] Yes, you can.

He came all this distance

just to find out something about a mother he never knew.

Now that's not a bad thing for him to do.

Why are you being so cruel to him?

I didn't mean to be cruel.

But mama, you were, and that just isn't like you.

Now what is going on?

Mama?

Greg, how did it happen?

St. Clair had a g*n pointed at me ...

he was holding Mrs. Ewing and she panicked.

-Why'd she panic? -What kind of question is that?

Guy's holding you with one hand,

he's got a g*n in the other, you panic.

How'd you know where St. Clair was?

He called me.

I guess, he thought I'd help him.

Why do you think that?

Oh, we've been through this before, right?

Do you feel like a hero, now?

I don't know how the hell I feel.

I never shot a man before,

but if you guys are thinking making me a hero, forget it.

I was cornered, Mrs. Ewing panicked,

there was a scuffle, I reacted.

That's instinct, not heroism.

That's all I want to say.

Greg, how do you think

this will affect your campaign strategy?

I don't know.

Did you care to make a stand on g*n control, right now?

Oh no, please. Please, please!

-How're you feeling? -Great.

Oh, it is so good to see you back on your feet again.

Mom, Marcia called this morning.

All the information is right there on the list.

Did the roofers ever come to fix the leak?

I made some lasagna for supper, tonight.

-Oh, thank... -It's in the refrigerator.

Just shove it in the oven.

Now, you've got to take it easier from now on.

You want something to drink, maybe some juice?

Juice would be fine.

We're gonna take your bags upstairs.

-Anybody else want anything? -All right.

Oh!

We were all praying for you.

[mellow music playing]

-Mom! You're here. -Mom!

I never thought I'd see this place again.

-[Brian] Mom! -[Olivia] Mom!

My children! My babies!

Oh, God!

Oh! Aw!

[sighs]

[sniffles] It's all right.

It's all right. Everything's gonna be all right, now.

-Mom. -I know. I know, honey. I know.

[somber music playing]

[sighs]

[keyboard clacking]

Hey, Ben.

It doesn't make any sense.

St. Clair doesn't use a g*n,

he hires people to use g*ns for him.

What did it look like when you went in there?

Was there any sign of a struggle.

[Mack chuckles] I'd be guessing.

You've been at those crime scenes

when the cops are doing their job,

it looks like it was bombed.

-Whose g*n was it? -St. Clair's.

And Sumner took it away from him?

Hey, I wasn't there.

Did you fire point blank?

Come on, Ben, it's over. Forget it.

I'm convinced that Sumner went there to k*ll St. Clair.

You just said St. Clair wouldn't use a g*n, right?

What makes you think Sumner would?

Use your head.

My head doesn't buy Sumner's story, do you?

I don't know. You want answers? Don't ask me, huh?

[thuds]

[sighs]

The only person who knows what happened on that yacht,

other than Gregory Sumner, is Abby Ewing.

Ask her.

I will.

-Wow! -Do you really like it?

Oh, I think it's terrific.

Well, it's just a little bit different.

I, I didn't have the courage to cut it all off.

Oh, it does something wonderful to your face.

-No, no, the. The face. -The...

See, Vittorio never says "your".

We will design the hair to lift the eyes away

from the tummy to the face.

[laughs]

-[gasps] Oh. Oh. -Ah.

-They're kicking. [gasps] -Oh. They sure are. [sighs]

-Ah. -[sighs]

[chuckles]

Wait till you see the new outfits I got.

It cost a little bit, but, uh...

see, I-I wanted to look chic for the book tour.

-What cities? -I don't really know, yet.

I just decided on my own that I want to do it,

so, I, I called my editor,

and we're going to have a meeting, tomorrow.

-[gasps] -Oh, oh.

-[chuckles] -Aiyyaaiyaai!

[sighs]

I didn't want to look like some housewife.

Oh.

After all, I'm a best-selling author, right?

Absolutely.

It's a whole new me, a new tour,

a new book, a new life.

You're going to have a great time.

Yeah.

It's a new life for both of us.

I'm not going to fret over that.

I'm going to keep busy and useful.

It's all for the best, isn't it?

[soft music playing]

It is.

[mellow music]

[phone rings]

-Hello. -[Mack] Hi. It's me.

How you doing?

Oh, I'm fine.

It feels real good to get home.

Oh, I'll bet.

I'm sorry I wasn't there for the homecoming.

You know, Karen, it's the damndest thing.

You know, my Wolf Bridge investigation got me nowhere.

But the publicity I'm getting, you wouldn't believe

the job offers that had come in.

Oh, Mack, that's... that's... that's nice.

-You deserve it. -Yeah.

Thanks. From all over the country.

You're not moving, are you?

I don't know. What do you think?

Well, that's your decision.

Doesn't have to be.

Listen, why don't I come over, tomorrow night

and... you know, just the two of us.

I'll cook, all right?

-And we can talk. -No, Mack.

[melancholy music playing]

-What is it? -We've gone over it and over it.

I know, but it's different, now. You're different.

Nothing's different. The marriage is over.

Look, Mack, I can't talk anymore.

[music continues]

[sobs]

[music fades]

[fire crackling]

[groans]

[panting] No! No!

[groaning]

-Abby, Abby, Abby! Abby! -[gasping]

Abby. Abby. Abby, come on, come on.

-[whispering] Come on. -[Abby whimpering]

It's just a dream.

-[Abby gasps] -Hey, it's okay.

It's okay.

Ah! It seems so real.

[Gary] Yeah. I know. I know. It's okay.

[sobs]

I can't get it out of my head.

I'm right here.

[Abby sobs]

I saw the g*n went off and his body...

Hey.

I'm here as long as you need me. It's okay.

[sighs] What am I doing here?

[chuckles] You're at the ranch.

Oh, I know. I know.

[sighs] You threw me out.

You hated me. You thought I wanted you dead.

Abby, we can talk about this later.

I'm confused.

I don't know what you're thinking.

Not tonight, all right?

[sighs] You can tell me.

Abby, I've got to sort out my thoughts

before I can tell you what they are.

I just need to know

that the two of us weren't a mistake.

[soft music playing]

[both breathe deeply]

[Valene] I'd like to go to Minneapolis, too,

if, if that's possible.

The Minneapolis paper

gave Nashville Junction a lovely review.

Yeah, I know. See, that's, uh...

that's one of the reasons that I'd like to go there.

Well, I was thinking that perhaps

because of that,

we don't have to cover Minneapolis.

Oh!

Okay, well, it's not important. I just thought that you might--

How are you feeling?

Is this a good time for you to travel?

[Valene] Oh, it's a very good time.

[woman] Perhaps you should wait until after the twins.

Oh, no, no, no, I feel great and I want to do it, now.

[clicks tongue]

Do you remember

when we first proposed Nashville Junction to Harvey?

You were the one that got me through that meeting.

Do you remember he was concerned

that the book would be too special?

Yeah, but then he loved it when he read it.

I mean, I-I can't tell you what that meant to me,

how that made me feel. I mean... [sighs]

Yes, he was a challenge.

[sighs]

He doesn't want to send you on any more tours

for Nashville Junction.

What do you mean?

[woman] He's not convinced

that the expense of personal appearance tours is worth it.

[Valene] Yeah, but on Capricorn Crude,

-I... -[woman] You were,

You were an unknown then.

Val, the truth is,

he doesn't want to throw good money after bad.

I-I don't know what you're saying.

-You know that I love the book. -Yeah?

It got nice reviews, and the bookstores ordered it

-and displayed it... -Uh-huh.

...and expected big things from it.

Val, no one's buying it.

Nashville Junction is the disappointment of the season.

No, I can start as soon as the governor wants me to.

So, do I. I think it's a great opportunity.

Listen, make sure the governor knows

that I've had dozens of offers from the private sector,

but I've taken his offer over all of them.

I'm sure he does, but tell him anyway.

[chuckles] Thanks.

Sounds good.

That too. Listen, why don't we get together,

and we'll go over the list, work out the details.

Great. Looking forward to it. Okay.

Ah!

[sighs]

Whoopee.

[Gary] This is Lotus Point.

-Oh, but there's so much to it. -Right.

Yeah, I know.

You don't think it'll be cost-effective,

but I project a break-even point in ten years.

But where's the hotel?

Replaced by individual cabins, powered by solar energy.

Oh. [chuckles]

Well, you know, they already started work, Gary.

-I, I don't-- -Yeah, it's been redirected.

-Oh. -[clears throat]

[sighs]

Why have you sold off all the acquisitions

I made for Gary Ewing Enterprises?

-Not all. -Almost all.

We're still making money.

Um, Pacific West Publications,

that magazine loses more money every month.

Yeah, I know.

But their subsidiaries earn money.

They own a cable TV news service that's promising.

-You might enjoy that. -I enjoyed Lotus Point.

[Gary] You'll still be part of that.

[sighs] Abby, look, it was real easy for me

to blame you for all our problems.

I mean, I sat up here at the ranch

and doled out my responsibilities,

and then, I got angry at you

because you ran the business your way,

which wasn't my way.

Well, from now on, I'm going to try things my way.

I want to control my own company.

You know, um, can I be a partner?

[chuckles]

-Maybe. Eventually. -Oh.

Oh, Abby, I love you.

You're exciting, unpredictable, the perfect lover.

[chuckles]

Like I tell you, as a businesswoman,

you represent everything I loathe.

Come on, Gary, don't hold back. Tell me how you feel.

I'm sorry, but that's the truth.

[sighs]

So, now, I'm going to do business my way,

fairly and honestly, watching the bottom line,

but still able to do some good.

I promised Karen I'd do right by her with Lotus Point.

I have.

Honey, I want you to meet our new partner.

[soft music playing]

[Gary] She owns half of it.

-Your uncle, remember? -Oh, I know, I know.

Half to me, half to Sid's estate.

Then she has the right to be involved with Lotus Point.

[Abby] I don't care anymore, Gary.

Abby, talk to me, dammit.

You don't want me to talk, you want me to listen.

-We're in this together. -Oh, are we?

Yes, you said you wanted a partnership.

Partners discuss.

[sighs] Okay.

[sighing]

You're taking away everything I care about.

I'm taking over my own company.

Why didn't you ask me about Karen?

Ask you what?

Why didn't you at least tell me beforehand?

You're the one who said you wanted this marriage to work.

-Is this how? -There was nothing to discuss.

Why did you take me back?

Do you, do you want to punish me?

Do you want to rub my nose in it and then gloat?

'Cause if that's the kinda marriage you want...

-No. -...you can divorce me.

[Gary] Is that what you want?

[panting]

No.

[sighs]

You're right. I should have told you about Karen.

[sighs]

[sighs]

I can't stay in this marriage without your trust.

Trust? What, are you nuts?

I love you, I don't trust you. Why should I?

This whole past year has been nothing but lies

and deceptions and violations of everything I believe in.

-That's all changed, now. -[laughs]

-Abby, Abby. -What?

I mean, after all that's happened,

if I trusted you, wouldn't I deserve what I got?

Wouldn't I deserve your contempt?

Come on.

I'm a little naive, I'm not stupid.

[scoffs]

-What a love affair. -[scoffs]

But I do love you.

-God help me. -[chuckles]

[mellow music playing]

[crickets chirping]

Joshua?

Oh, I'm sorry, uh, I-I didn't mean to startle you.

This is a wonderful book, isn't it?

Yes, it is.

Uh...

Joshua, I wasn't, I wasn't very fair to you the other day.

To you or your mother.

Uh, old grudges die hard,

and somehow you-you hold on to them harder

when it's your own sister, I don't know why.

Maybe it's because you feel guilty about them.

Anyway, uh, there were lots of things to, uh,

admire about her.

She really loved people.

Too much.

She, uh, she trusted them too much,

and she got hurt a lot.

[inhales]

And, uh, she was a beautiful dancer.

[chuckles] Graceful as a leaf on the wind.

Did your papa ever tell you about that?

No.

You know, from here...

you look just like, Orabel Patrick.

Your grandmother, m-m-my mother.

Well, she's in Val's book. She ran a beauty parlor, right?

Oh, well, Val just used the name.

It's not the same Orabel.

Well, I'm up to the part where,

where Orabel tells Verna

that if she runs off with the USO show,

she's, she's dead as far as she's concerned.

[chuckles] Val has a wonderful imagination, doesn't she?

Makes you feel like you're right in the middle of it.

The way that Val describes Verna,

she sounds a lot like you.

Me?

And... and I read the dedication.

"To my mother,

"whose courage and spirit and love

guided me through the pages of this book."

[soft music playing]

Are you Verna?

Oh.

Authors mix up details willy-nilly.

They just make up whatever they please.

That book has nothing to do with me.

I don't know why she wrote that.

I'm sorry.

I guess, I'm just looking for things

that... that aren't there.

[sighs]

[music fades]

[sighs]

[man on TV] And it's right down the middle.

[Ben] In the wake of violence,

too many compelling questions remain unanswered.

Questions which ought to be answered

before we go to the polls.

This is not to imply that Gregory Sumner's action

was necessarily wrong or self-serving,

or even that it was necessarily ill-advised.

What we are suggesting

is that a sh**ting is not necessarily heroic,

and the instant canonization of Assemblyman Sumner ,

may prove a bit premature.

Why did Sumner wait so long before releasing

Mack McKenzie's Wolfbridge file?

If Mark St. Clair had lived, what could he have told us

about Gregory Sumner's connection

with the Wolfbridge group?

We urge that the candidate come forward

and discuss all aspects of these questions.

And until he does,

it is our duty as citizens to keep asking them.

[man on TV] You have just heard from Ben Gibson,

the General Manager of Pacific World Cable News.

[crickets chirping]

[loon music playing]

You sound like a duck.

[both chuckle]

-Uh, it's a loon. -A loon? [chuckles]

-Hi, I'm Cathy Geary. -Hi, I'm, I'm Joshua Rush.

-It's nice to meet you. -It's nice to meet you, too.

-You're staying here? -Yeah, I'm staying here.

-Oh, you mind if I sit down? -No, no, go ahead.

How come you walked here?

I, I didn't think that anybody walks in California.

Well, I'm, I'm actually from Texas

by way of Arkansas, and, um, I like to walk.

We were practically neighbors. I'm from Tennessee.

Oh, yeah?

You live right next door, don't you?

Well, actually, I'm staying with a friend

for a little while.

So am I. I'm staying here for a while.

-Lilimae is my aunt. -Oh.

How'd you make that duck noise?

Oh.

Look, you...

You have to hold your hand like this.

-Pull that like that. -Yeah.

And you have to blow it like this.

[loon music playing]

Not accusations, questions.

But the same questions as Ben Gibson asked

in his editorial, last night.

Those guys were for Caulfield before it happened.

Greg, look, it's not just the papers.

Some of the morning news shows have also picked this up.

I'm worried about a trend.

We can't overreact.

We've got nothing to hide.

Okay, let's fight fire with fire.

All right.

Get Mrs. Ewing to make a statement

about how you saved her life.

Leave Mrs. Ewing alone. That's not a bad idea.

-I mean, you saved her life. -Just leave her out of it.

Greg, you can't. Now, she can bail us--

Case closed. Forget it.

Leave her out of it. Think of something else.

-[Greg sighs] -Okay.

[Karen] Dr. Garner recommended mild exercise at first.

You know, walking and swimming, that sort of thing.

So, you're on the way to recovery.

Hey, I, I saw your editorial, last night.

-What did you think? -I've not seen you on the air.

The general manager doesn't usually do that,

does he?

No. Uh, this was important.

-I like what you said, Ben. -I'm glad.

For years, Gregory Sumner was a hero to me.

I know. And to Mack, too.

I mean, you have no idea how this is eating him up.

I live with the guy, and I see it.

He knows he was wrong,

and it's making him, uh, pretty miserable.

Well, chasing after Wolfbridge was his life for a year.

Now, it's over.

Exactly. Now, it is over. Now, Wolfbridge is over.

Mack is sorry.

-Ben. -You're recuperating.

Everything that came between you guys is in the past.

This really doesn't concern you.

Honey, I love you, guys. Of course, it concerns me.

Ben, it doesn't!

[somber music playing]

I'm sorry.

-I know you mean well. -I do.

All I'm saying, is just talk to the guy, okay?

I mean, i-if the marriage problems

are more basic than that, if it's something else,

something that he doesn't understand,

just tell him.

[music continues]

[cheerful music playing]

[sighs]

[music fades]

How long you been here?

Just a little while.

I just wanted to see how you're doing.

I'm glad you came out.

I saw Revolver. He looks great.

[chuckles] Yeah, he is.

I, I heard about Abby on the news.

Is she all right?

[sighs]

She just moved back on the ranch.

[sighs]

[sighs] Kathy, I love her.

[sighs]

I've had a lot of time to think.

God knows a lot to think about.

I promised myself

that if she ever got out of this thing alive,

I'd do whatever I had to do to make it work.

Well, I hope it does work.

[gloomy music playing]

What was I to you?

[sighs]

What you still are, I hope.

A good friend.

I mean, whatever else we had, we had a good friendship.

Yeah, we did.

[music continues]

I got a new job.

-You did? [chuckles] -[Cathy] Yeah.

-Doing what? -Singing.

[chuckles] That's great.

[music fades]

Because of the confusion surrounding the marina incident

and the rumors that have begun circulating in its wake,

Assemblyman Sumner has asked you here, today

so that he can answer all of your questions.

You told me you weren't going to

have anything to do with Mark St. Clair.

When he and Abby were still missing,

you didn't tell the police that he telephoned you.

I tell Mack, you get furious. Then, you go to the police.

And it's because you want to look like you're cooperating.

Then you end up at St. Clair's yacht

with a g*n in your hand.

Do you think I planned it? Do you think I had any choice?

[Laura] I don't know. I, I really don't know.

I must be missing something.

There must be some piece of logic

-that makes sense of all this. -[Gregory] There's no logic.

I don't know what's happening.

I just don't know what's happening.

I-I'm afraid to say anything to anybody.

I'm afraid that I might say the wrong thing.

[phone rings]

You don't say anything.

You know, I, I don't know what I mean to you.

You never tell me.

Do you want me to stick around? Does it, does it matter to you?

Just give me a reason to stay. Give me one good reason.

-I want you to stay. -[man] Greg, we're ready.

[phone rings]

[Gregory] But if I were you, I wouldn't.

Assemblyman Sumner, you have said

that Mark St. Clair held Mrs. Ewing at gunpoint.

And in the scuffle, you shot and k*lled St. Clair.

-Is that true? -It's basically correct.

However, the captain of the yacht claims

there were no weapons in the stateroom

before you entered it.

Well, there was a g*n in the drawer.

Maybe the captain didn't know about it.

Didn't St. Clair have a bodyguard?

-Yes, he did. -Was the bodyguard

in the stateroom at the time of the sh**ting?

No. St. Clair dismissed the bodyguard

immediately after I entered.

Where did the g*n come from?

-Why did you go to the yacht? -Where did the g*n come from?

I told you, the g*n was in a drawer.

[Ben] And Mark St. Clair removed it?

[Gregory] No.

Mrs. Ewing removed the g*n from the drawer.

And then Mark St. Clair tried to grab her,

and that's when I jumped in.

If Mark St. Clair had an armed bodyguard there,

why did he go for the g*n?

This is not working.

I told you that the, uh, armed bodyguard was dismissed.

-Um, no more questions. -What is your--

No more questions, please. Thank you.

[indistinct]...you don't need Mrs. Ewing, huh?

[mellow music playing]

What're you doing?

I'm, uh... I'm planning a nursery.

I-I could use a second opinion, though.

All right.

There's an awful lot to choose from.

Yeah.

All the books say you need bright things around the baby.

It's important to keep him stimulated, they say.

How-how about this one?

Yeah.

I-I finished reading Nashville Junction

this afternoon.

I, uh, I liked it very much.

-You did? -Yeah.

Especially the part when she joins the fire department.

[both laugh]

-I thought that was very funny. -Oh.

And then all of a sudden at the end,

when she leaves to join Alfonso the Great,

I started to cry.

You-you know, it went from funny to sad,

just like that.

[sighs]

I'm glad you're here, cousin.

[sighs]

Papa told me... [clears throat]

-when I was born... -Yeah?

that mama had a superstition about cribs.

So, the first year of my life,

I slept in a sink full of pillows.

[laughs]

You wouldn't want that for your kids, would you?

Your mama did that?

I've never heard of anybody else believe in that.

-Have you? -No, I haven't.

[phone rings]

How things going, Mr. Gibson?

Hi, Paul. Anything interesting today?

A few things from Washington, official looking,

and, uh, something from Hong Kong.

Okay, thank you, sir. Just put it right there.

So what do you think?

Is the station going to get better funding?

What do you mean?

Well, now if this rich guy's bought the station,

he'll probably pump millions into it.

-Who's that? -Haven't you heard?

Gary Ewing's bought the station.

[phone rings]

Susan, get your butt in here.

[Valene] I've been working on, um, plans for the nursery.

-[Lilimae] Oh! -[Valene] Yeah.

Picked out the wallpaper.

Oh.

Thought I'd call Joseph

and uh, see if he could do it for us.

Good. What color did you choose?

Oh, it's pattern.

-Oh. -Yeah.

Yellow and, uh, dark blue, mostly.

Oh, that sounds pretty.

Would you like a cup of tea?

I thought I'd start looking at some uh, bassinets

and some cribs, tomorrow.

[sighs]

Well, you know I'm not going to tell you

how to raise your children.

[chuckles] Of course not, mama.

And I know you're going to say it's just foolish superstition.

What is?

Well, you can laugh at me if you want,

but it's my firm belief that cribs bring bad luck.

[soft music playing]

Valene, why are you looking at me like that?

Oh, I know you think it's just my silly foolishness.

Is that a family superstition, mama?

Family?

No, I...

[sighs]

I learned it from experience.

I thought I knew you.

Well, you do, sweet pea.

-Better than anyone. -No, I don't.

Valene, what's gotten into you?

All along, you've had another family.

I feel like the way it used to be.

What do you mean?

Joshua told me

about his mother's superstition.

I don't understand what you're saying.

You know exactly what I'm saying.

No, I don't.

And I forbid you to talk to me like that.

Whatever else I am, I'm still your mother.

And Joshua's.

No.

-Who put that idea in your head? -[Valene] He did.

When were you ever going to tell him, mama?

Were you ever going to tell me?

Are you believing him instead of me?

Mama, you turned your back on me once.

I'll never forget it.

But you made it up to me.

Now, why are you doing it again?

Why are you doing it to him?

He's your son.

I never meant to.

Well, then, mama, why are you doing it?

I never married, Jonathan J. Rush.

We fell in love.

I settled down.

I-I even joined his congregation.

After Joshua was born, I...

I tried to be a good mother.

Jonathan J. told everybody we were married.

For a year after Joshua was born,

I-I stayed with him and protected his lie.

[sighs]

He kept after me, telling me how much he loved me

and begging me to...

[sighs]

Finally, I said, yes.

When Teddy Keener passed through and asked me to join his act...

I didn't even have the courage to tell Jonathan J. to his face.

Uh...

[music continues]

I left him a note.

And I never saw either of them again.

How can I tell him, now?

How can I tell him? [sobs]

You won't tell him, will you?

-[sobs] -[shushing softly]

[music fades]

[Gregory] Mr. Ewing, what is it now?

[Gary] How do you thank a man for saving your wife's life?

Whatever else happened, that's the bottom line.

I'll always be grateful.

You're welcome.

I'd like to do something for you to help you campaign.

Thanks. I'd, uh... prefer not to exploit this.

[inhales]

Well, I appreciate that,

but, uh, if there's anything I can do,

if you need anything...

I'll let you know.

Well...

Greg.

[Carl] Greg, we need Mrs. Ewing.

No.

The answer is still no.

[mellow music playing]

-I wasn't sure you'd be here. -How could I resist?

Good to see you.

I don't get this.

Why couldn't we have met at your office?

I have a favor to ask.

A favor?

In return for the one I did for you.

I'm not sure I know what you mean by that.

On the yacht.

You don't think, I think you did that

as a favor to me, do you?

I saved your life.

You saved your campaign.

All I'm asking is that you make a public statement on my behalf.

Why? From what I hear, you're a hero.

Today I'm a hero, tomorrow I could disappear.

Ben Gibson and some of the others

are asking a lot of questions,

the kind of questions that need to be answered,

otherwise, I could be in trouble.

-Well, answer them. -I can't. You can.

Why should I?

Because you want to see me in Washington.

I did.

But that was when I had business interests to protect.

Right now, I'm, uh, kind of in the doghouse.

So how long is that going to last? A month or two?

By the time I'm inaugurated, you'll be running things again.

Come on, Abby, do it for me.

Do it for us.

[theme music playing]
