[narrator] In Knots Landing...
Your condition is progressive.
In a short while, you will be confined to a wheelchair.
When did you become a southpaw?
[narrator] Karen continued to deceive Mack
about her symptoms.
I did a silly thing today.
-Well, I sprained my hand. -Silly.
We might even have to spend the whole night here.
Do you think we could get that lucky?
[narrator] Joshua no longer felt guilty about loving Kathy.
[sighs] This horse is worth a fortune.
I won't take no for an answer.
[narrator] A powerful man,
Paul Galveston was buying Gary's friendship.
Gary, I like you.
You remind me a lot of myself when I was starting out.
-[horse neighing] -Take the horse.
Honey, nobody took the babies away.
[birds chirping]
It was a premature birth.
-They were complications. -That's what they say.
[narrator] Val was clinging desperately to her suspicions.
Her delusions were indicating signs of a breakdown.
I'm sorry, Mrs. Ewing.
I have to take the babies away now.
-No! -I think she needs help.
It's God's will, Val.
The hospital wouldn't make a mistake like that, sweet pea.
She's had a terrible shock. A terrible disappointment.
[screams]
[narrator] And in the night,
she quietly ran away from Knott's Landing.
Val's doctor was the only one who knew where the babies were.
It's only a matter of time
before the whole thing is going to come out.
You think about that.
[narrator] He was on the hook, and Abby knew it.
And now...
[theme music playing]
Ever since she came home from the hospital,
she was having nightmares.
She seemed to be reviewing her life
and all the mistakes she'd made.
At first, that seemed like a good sign,
because she had made some mistakes.
She didn't make any mistakes.
We made mistakes.
I know I made a lot.
She had been under a lot of pressure
even before she lost the babies.
The pregnancy had been emotionally stressful
in a number of ways.
But she was happy being pregnant.
She wanted those babies so much.
Joshua and I were the last ones to see her.
She'd had another one of her nightmares
and she woke us up screaming.
Oh, the way she was behaving.
Frightened me as bad as I've ever been frightened.
She was...
didn't know what she was saying.
She packed her suitcase, but she didn't take her car.
You checked all the local hotels?
We're in the process of doing that now,
and most likely, this is not as serious
or as dangerous as it appears to you.
I mean, most likely, she's in the immediate vicinity.
Now, the first thing we'll do
is we'll broadcast to alert units
to be on the lookout for Mrs. Ewing.
Then we'll send teletypes
to adjoining law enforcement agencies.
[Karen] How adjoining?
[man] Neighboring counties.
[Karen] You're not going to let the information
of her disappearance get out, are you?
The publicity would be worse for her.
[Mack] Karen, we can't hedge our bets.
-[Karen] But Mack-- -[Mack] We have to get out
as much information as possible, right?
[Lilimae] The state of mind she's in,
there's no telling what will happen to her.
If she's carrying identification and she is hurt
and has to go to a hospital, then obviously,
the hospital would contact you here.
Well, maybe she can't get to a hospital.
What-what-what if she's passed out somewhere.
Or worse, maybe she doesn't want to go to a doctor for help.
And we've-we've got to find her right away.
Lilimae, there's no reason to believe
anything will happen to her.
[soft music playing]
[Karen] You know, when her marriage broke up,
she disappeared then, too.
She stayed in a motel at the beach.
[Lilimae] But she called me and let me know where she was.
[knocking]
Have you contacted the airports
and the train stations and the bus depots?
-Not yet. -What are you waiting for?
Come on, Mack. In 90% of these cases,
-they're within five minutes-- -You come on.
This is not 90% of the cases. This is one case.
You're going to do everything you can to find her.
-Mrs. Ewing. -Yeah.
Where about you from?
Tennessee, originally.
[Harlan] Oh, that's beautiful country around there.
-Yeah. -Friendly people, too.
Grace and I took a vacation a few years back.
Went to see the Grand Ole Opry.
-We were hoping to see... -You ever been?
...Barbara Mandrell,
but she was out in Hollywood making her TV show. [chuckles]
I'm Harlan McManus. This is my wife, Grace.
If we can do anything for you while you're here,
you just be sure and let us know.
How long are you planning on staying?
I'm not really sure.
Well, now, there's instant coffee packets
and tea bags in the room. And a hot plate.
We had those put in not long ago.
Oh, and the nicest little coffee shop,
just two doors down, makes mighty fine breakfast.
Will you be putting this on your credit card, Mrs. Ewing?
No, I was thinking about paying in cash.
Oh, well, we'll need one night's payment in advance,
then that'll be $36.
Oh, sure. I've got that right here.
-36? -Mm-hmm.
Sure.
Mrs. Ewing, uh, pardon me for asking but...
you're not the author, are you?
What?
Valene Ewing.
-No, I'm not. -[Grace chuckles]
I guess you must get asked that a lot.
Mrs. Ewing, here's your key.
You'll be in seven.
-Let me show you to your room. -Thank you.
I think that's a very good idea.
We'll talk some more about it in a few days.
Have you gotten any word yet from Valene?
Do you think you could come to my house
and speak with my mother?
I think that she could use your help.
Of course. I've been looking forward to meeting her.
I wish that there was something that I could do...
to bring Val back home or just to get through to her.
She's lost all faith and all hope.
But I know that if I could speak with her
just for a little while,
brother to sister, I could get through to her.
Why don't you?
Perhaps she watches my program.
Or perhaps she'll see it wherever she is.
Why don't you do my next program?
I'm not a preacher.
[Kathrun] Not to preach.
To make an appeal to your sister.
I can't think of a better use for the airwaves.
Don't you think that Mrs. Ewing would object?
Why should she?
Well, I mean, I already have a job.
And it's you that they tune in to see.
I think Mrs. Ewing would applaud the choice.
She's spoken very highly of you.
[tranquil music playing]
[Paul] I've been watching your cable television station.
It's good.
-But you were too late. -[Gary] Too late?
[Paul chuckles]
If you'd started ten years ago, you'd be a pioneer.
[Gary chuckles]
I didn't have the money to invest ten years ago.
[Paul] When I started out, I had a hundred dollars.
Everything came from that.
[Gary chuckles] I'm not like you.
[Paul] Ah, but you're getting there.
There's a fire in your eyes,
you've got passion, you're not afraid to take risks.
[Gary laughs]
[Gary] Up until now, that's been applied
to areas other than business.
[Paul] You mark my words. When it's all over
and the score is being tallied,
you'll be the Ewing they remember,
-not J.R., not Bobby. -[Gary chuckles] Yeah.
Yeah, maybe.
[Paul] I wouldn't make you this offer
-if I didn't believe that. -[Gary] What offer?
[Paul] To go into business with me.
[Gary] Doing what?
[Paul] Putting up communication satellites.
-[Gary] What? -[Paul] Yeah.
I've already got two of them up, and they're making me a fortune.
Now I'm planning a third.
I've never taken in a partner before.
But as I said, uh, I like you.
Um... [chuckles]
I'm going to have to think about this.
You know, I own a lot of the land
adjoining Lotus Point.
Yes, sir. I know that.
Prime land when you want to expand.
As a gesture of good faith...
I'll offer it to you for $50,000 an acre.
That's way below market value.
Why are you doing that?
Don't you trust me?
[laughs]
Okay, Mommy's going to stop for a second.
Okay?
[babies babbling]
[chuckles]
They're just beautiful.
Thank you.
This is Isaac, and this is Erica.
Hey, Erica.
Look over here.
-Ah! -Ah, yes, aren't you adorable?
And so are you, you sweet...
Oh, my gosh.
-They're twins, right? -[woman] Yes.
I have twins at home, too.
Yeah. Look at you. Aren't you adorable?
Yes, I know. And your brother's cute, too.
Could I hold her?
-[Valene] Oh. -Sure.
Come here, darling. Come on.
Oh! Oh, little sweet...
[ominous music playing]
Sweet darling, baby.
I'll never let you out of my sight.
[soft music playing]
Ma'am.
Ma'am.
We have to go now.
Sure.
Come on here.
-[babbles] -Yes.
Yes.
You have two very beautiful children.
-[sobs] -[woman] Thank you.
[mellow music playing]
[keys jingling]
[breathing heavily]
[gasps]
How could anybody love you?
How could anybody want you? Look at you.
You look like a man.
You're flat as a board.
No, no, you look like an old lady.
Your arms are so skinny and scrawny.
Long sad face, and those eyes.
You're always trying to be so sweet.
So good. Sweet Valene.
Sweet pea.
You're always trying to please everybody.
[sobs] Always trying to make everybody love you.
Well, you got what you deserve.
Why did you stop being so, so stupid?
You deserve this.
Stupid little sweet Valene!
-[Abby] As partners? -[Gary] Yeah.
[chuckles] Ab, come on. What is it? What's the matter?
Uh...
Well, first of all, he, uh, he gives you a horse.
-Yeah. -Well, I just don't know
if it's such a good idea to accept favors
from someone you hardly know.
I mean, particularly someone that powerful.
Gary, that was a very hard lesson
for me to learn, you know?
Abby, what are you getting at?
I know you two hit it off.
I-I know that you're impressed with him.
Come on, I know these guys.
My father was one of these guys.
[chuckles]
Let me tell you something.
He gave me a vision of myself I've never had before.
-And you know something? -What?
I liked it.
[chuckles]
[tranquil music playing]
Then you should do it.
I think I will.
[chuckles] I guess, I'm just a little overcautious
after what happened with Mark St. Clair.
Ah, please, it's not anything like that.
I know that. I know, but I...
I'm only going on hearsay anyway.
You know, I've-I've never even met the man, have I?
Well, you should. You'd like him.
Well, why don't you introduce me to him?
-Maybe tomorrow? -You bet.
All right.
[melancholy music playing]
[door knocks]
[door knocks]
-[door knocks] -Who is it?
[woman] It's the maid. I've come to clean your room.
No, I don't want you in here.
-[door knocks] -Go, I don't want you in here!
Get out of here!
[Mack] Yes, my name is Mack Mackenzie,
special invest--
Yes, that Mack Mackenzie.
Thank you.
I hope you can. A woman has disappeared.
We don't know if she's alive or dead or whatever.
I'm trying to do everything I can to track her down.
Her name is Valene Ewing,
and I need a list of phone calls that she may have made
-in the last three days. -[door knocks and opens]
Sure, I'll hold. Thank you.
-How'd it go with Baker? -Oh, great.
Except a couple g*ons got there before he did, worked me over.
-Baker double-crossed us? -No, no, I'm sure he didn't.
Except the police were the only ones
who could have known about the meeting.
They really don't want us to investigate, Mack.
If Baker, yes.
Fire away.
-You all right? -Yeah.
[Karen] I understand Valene Ewing called your company
last night for a taxi.
Could you please tell me where she took the taxi to?
That's when she called. 1:13. Yes.
The dispatch record. I'll wait.
Thank you. [sighs]
[soft music playing]
Hello.
The bus terminal.
Yes, I see. Could you give me the name of the driver?
Uh-huh.
I'm-I'm sorry.
Could you, uh, hold for a second?
Could you repeat that name, please?
Uh-huh.
Yes.
Thank you.
[sighs]
[door knocks]
[Harlan] Mrs. Ewing...
This is Harlan McManus. Are you all right?
Yes.
[Harlan] May I come in?
Why?
[Harlan] Irene was concerned
that you might not be feeling well.
I just wanted to make sure you were all right.
I'm fine. I...
I, uh...
I'm okay.
I-I just didn't want anybody to see me looking this way.
What way?
I don't know. Just so uh...
ugly.
Miss Ewing, you're far from ugly.
Well, I'll bet any of the men in town had jumped at the chance
-to get to know you. -Uh...
Well, I'm just glad you're feeling fine now,
and I'll tell Irene to come back tomorrow, okay?
Okay.
[mellow music playing]
[Lilimae] When you went over to get Val on Thanksgiving,
what was she talking about?
Well, anything you can remember might help.
A lot of things. It was all a jumble.
Mostly the two of us, our marriage.
Ben said she'd been talking to him about Lucy.
Lucy?
About how she lost her, too.
Could you call Lucy?
Maybe Val's going to see her.
-I don't think so. -Well, it's her only child.
Valene did never go back to Dallas,
not after everything that happened to her there.
JR taking Lucy away from her and running her out of state,
she just wouldn't do it.
Well... [sighs]
I've run out of possibilities.
Lilimae, I'll do anything I can to help.
[Lilimae] I can't bear to be at home tonight.
It's a terrible empty space, a...
part that's missing.
I've done everything I could think of.
I've gone over everything I could remember.
The worst thoughts keep going through my mind about,
about why Val might have left...
about what she might be intending to do...
or what she might have done already.
Lilimae, Valene would never do anything like that.
You know that.
I don't know anything anymore.
[sobs]
-Oh, God... -What's the matter?
Eh, Valene's disappeared.
[Lilimae sobs]
Oh, no. How awful.
-When did it happen? -Last night.
I suppose the police have been notified.
[Gary] Yeah.
Lilimae, I'm sorry.
Valene was so distraught over losing those babies.
Do you think it might help to hire a private detective?
-[Lilimae sniffles] -It's not a bad idea.
Let me handle it.
Why would you want Valene back?
Lilimae...
You never took any interest in her well-being before.
Lilimae...
I've never wanted to hurt Valene.
Honestly, I don't care what you think about me,
but I wouldn't want any harm to come to her.
People that I love very much care a great deal about her.
Now that's reason enough for me to wanna help.
Lilimae, we've gotta do everything we can.
[sobs]
[tense music playing]
You are beautiful.
And there isn't a man in town
who wouldn't want you...
just the way you are.
Hey there, good boy.
I went to the bus terminal.
I gave them a description of Val.
They had nothing to tell me either.
[inhales]
This is beautiful.
I've got a whole damn news service here
who can't find one person!
Ben.
Do you know I spent the entire day today
talking to every motel, every hotel,
every hostelry in the county.
-She's not in the county. -[scoffs]
I've gone over every conversation,
every moment I've had with the woman.
I mean, what else should I have done differently?
Everything.
-[Karen sighs] -What?
[sighs]
No, no, no. Wha-wha-wha... Come on.
-What? -You left her,
you hurt her, and now you expect to come in
in one night and make everything all right?
-We were working things out. -Well, obviously, not too well.
You know so much, Mrs. McKenzie, then you obviously know--
Look, if you want to do something, do it.
And stop complaining about it.
And you stop taking your frustrations out on me!
[melancholy music playing]
What are you going to write about?
Pardon me?
Your sermon.
Um, it's not a sermon.
It's based on a passage from Revelation,
chapter 21, verse 4.
What's that?
Um, it's impossible for us to always know
why God works the way he does.
Sometimes terrible things happen to very good people.
We know that from people that we love.
But if you have faith, if you trust in God's goodness,
that He has a purpose that's beyond our comprehension,
then you can bear these sorrows rather than be crushed by them.
Sometimes it's hard to accept that.
[chuckles]
It's harder when you reject it.
I just hope that, maybe, wherever Val is,
that she'll see me and she'll hear that.
[upbeat music playing]
[men laughing]
-Why did you call him Dad? -I don't know.
It's just a name we had for him when I was growing up.
Hey, how about another drink, Valene?
Sure. Why not? Yeah, okay.
Hey, bartender, another drink for this lady here.
You know, my sister used to call this a Wheel of Fortune.
-Why is that? -Because every time she had one,
she couldn't stop spinning.
[men laughing]
Hey, and where are you staying
while you're in town here, Valene?
That's for me to know and you to find out.
[man] Well, I bet you're from Neptune.
Yeah, how'd you know?
[laughing]
I hear they got a lot of pretty rooms over there, Valene.
-[Valene] Yeah. -Are the rooms pretty?
Yeah. They're pretty. In the dark.
In the dark!
[men laugh]
[man] All right!
[indistinct hollering]
I'll be right back.
[mellow music playing]
-Hi. -[chuckles] Uh...
Mind if I join you?
[chuckles] Well, my wife just went to the ladies' room.
She'll be right back.
Oh, wives don't bother me.
Ah, no, no. This one will if she finds you here.
Well, let's get right down to it.
-Do you want me to stay? -[chuckles] No, uh...
-But I'd like to see you. -When?
Uh, I'll be taking my wife home soon.
I could come by after.
Sounds good.
[Valene] She must be pretty stupid
to let you out of her sight
-even for a second. -[chuckles]
How come I haven't seen you in here before?
Because I haven't been here before.
[man] What's your name?
Valene.
What's yours?
[Gwen] Gwen.
What's going on here?
Uh, uh... she thought she knew me.
She thought I looked like someone she knew.
I'm real sorry, but I was mistaken.
You sure as hell were mistaken.
Try it with my husband.
I could have your husband anytime I want, sweetheart.
-[Gwen] Oh, you think so? -[Valene] I know so.
Yes. Len here is man enough to handle--
-Honey... -No! You let go of me!
-No. -Cheap little tr*mp.
I've seen you work on every man in this place,
but my husband is out of bounds. You got that?
-[whimpers] -Nobody's gonna rip my marriage.
If I ever see you around here again,
I'm gonna break your arm.
-[whimpers] -Now get the hell out of here.
Get lost!
[Valene cries]
I, uh, grew up in the land just east of Lotus Point,
the land I'm selling you.
Used to be able to ride a horse all day and, uh,
never see another person or, uh,
run into any semblance of civilization.
In a way, I-I like what you're doing with Lotus Point.
It, uh, it protects my memories, you know?
There there's no point in growing old if you, uh,
if you can't have memories that make young people say,
"Was it, really like that?"
[chuckles]
Gary, what is it with you?
I'm sorry.
I guess, I've got a few things on my mind.
Well, is there anything I can help you with?
No. I don't think so.
You're not underestimating me, are you?
[scoffs]
It's, uh, my ex-wife.
I mean, she, um, just lost her baby.
She was pregnant with twins, and now she's disappeared.
Oh, I'm-I'm sorry to hear that.
Um, do you still have a good relationship with her?
[Gary] Yes.
And, uh, you're uh, sure there's nothing I can do?
No. Nothing that isn't already being done,
but I appreciate it. Thank you.
Well, the, offer still stands if you need it.
[soft music playing]
[Jane] There are a lot of things about this place
I'm gonna miss, though.
Well, sure.
I mean, I know you're gonna find this hard to believe,
but there is a lot of things in Sacramento
that I'm gonna miss.
Actually, I find it hard to believe.
I'm especially sorry that I'm not gonna
actively participate in Lotus Point.
After it caused you so much grief?
[Jane] Oh, it must be so much fun now, you know?
I don't know, maybe it's not gonna be so fun.
You know that man I met in Santa Barbara?
He offered them a terrific deal.
They didn't pay any attention.
They got their mind set on someone named Scott Easton.
It was a great deal, too.
I... you know, I don't understand.
Is he working for Lotus Point?
Oh, he's helping them with the water shortage,
which is pretty funny
considering they're on the ocean.
[Greg] What do you know about Scott Easton?
Just that he's negotiating with Paul Galveston
over the water rights.
Abby working with Paul Galveston?
Well, she will be if the negotiations work out.
Why are you so interested in Scott Easton?
I'm not.
Well, then why are you asking me so many questions?
[Greg] You brought the subject up.
I'm just trying to keep the conversation moving along.
You know what I mean? Hey.
[snaps finger] Salad.
[thuds]
Hey! [laughing]
[Lilimae] I was sleeping, doctor,
and then she let out a terrible scream.
It woke us both up, and we ran into her room.
Well, she's had another one of her nightmares.
Joshua tried to turn on the lamp,
but Val wouldn't let him.
I tried to comfort her.
"It's-it's just a dream," I told her. It's over now.
But she screamed at me to leave her alone.
Well, I didn't wanna leave her like that,
but she kept screaming, "Get out. Leave me alone."
So we both left...
and then she was gone.
Mrs. Clements, I'm not sure why you've come to see me.
[Lilimae] I wanna know why Val left.
I wanna know what she was looking for.
I wanna know if--
If you think maybe she left to k*ll herself.
Well, I'd like to be able to help you, Mrs. Clements,
but I'm afraid I can't.
I'd have to talk to Val herself.
I see. [sighs]
It sounds as if you and your daughter
have a very good relationship.
Well, I did everything I could for her,
everything I could think of.
But maybe it wasn't enough.
Perhaps there was nothing more you could have done.
[Lilimae] Well, of course, there was!
I'm her mother.
She should have been able to come to me.
[sighs] I let her down before when this happened.
She probably thought I'd let her down again.
When did this happen before?
What?
You said this had happened before.
Mrs. Clements, perhaps you'd like to use this time
to talk a little about your own feelings.
My feelings?
I'm not the reason Val ran away.
[melancholy music playing]
-[Paul] You're a lucky woman. -[Abby] I know.
And he said some very nice things about you.
[Paul] Although I can't imagine it would be pleasant
to see your husband, uh, so, uh, emotionally involved
with his ex-wife.
What makes you think a thing like that would bother me?
Mm, human nature, I suppose.
You don't think I'd do anything to, uh...
discourage his feelings, do you?
I don't know.
That would be foolish of me, don't you think?
Many women would.
Well, it wouldn't do me any good.
But I'll bet you could give it a hell of a good try.
You're a beautiful and a charming woman.
And I must tell you,
everything Scott Easton told me about you is true.
[birds chirping]
[ominous music playing]
[water running]
[suspenseful music playing]
What'd you do?
What did you do?
What?
What?
You... dirty, filthy tr*mp.
You... you... you...
dirty, filthy, dirty,
dirty, dirty, filthy tr*mp.
[grunting]
[gasping]
[soft music playing]
[sighs]
There's just no question about it, Verna.
You are just gonna have to go out
and get yourself some new clothes.
Yeah, because you're gonna get yourself another job real soon.
You'll see.
Meantime, you can't go around looking like some--
Some poor little White Tr*sh.
[chuckles]
You know what I think, Verna?
I think...
that you owe it to yourself to go on a shopping spree.
Buy yourself some pretty new dresses.
Because you... are goin' home.
And if you're going home...
you gotta make yourself look real,
real pretty.
Yeah.
[giggles]
The taxi driver left Val at the bus terminal
at approximately 2:30 in the morning.
My husband talked to a janitor who came on duty at 6:30,
and he was positive that-that Val wasn't there.
So we-we talked to a dispatcher
who said there were four buses that left the terminal...
between 2:30 and 6:30.
So we-we assume that-that Val was on one of them.
The-the destinations were Vancouver, Salt Lake City,
Albuquerque, and San Diego,
so she could be anywhere at this point of time.
And that's the last we know where she might have gone.
That does give us a wide range of possibilities.
-Mister Freilich... -Please, call me Peter.
Peter, is it a hopeless search?
If she's alive, I'll find her.
-I can't guarantee yet that-- -[Gary] And if she's not alive?
Then it'll take us a shorter time.
Can I be blunt?
What are your qualifications?
Don't be fooled by my appearance.
I spent three years in the military
doing high level security work.
For six years after that, I was a detective for the LAPD.
If you don't mind my asking--
[Peter] I got shot in the line of duty.
Nothing serious but enough to fail the physical.
It was a medical discharge.
I've had my own business ever since.
You're hired.
Thank you.
Can you start right away?
As far as I'm concerned, I started
as soon as I walked into this room.
[sighs]
Thank you.
-We'll keep in touch? -Absolutely.
[tranquil music playing]
Hi.
I just stopped by to pay my bill.
[Harlan] Why are you leaving us so soon?
-Oh... -What's that you got there?
Looks like you've been shopping.
Oh, yeah.
Uh, what's the name of that little dress store,
the one right next to the bus depot?
-Oh, Charlotte. Yeah. -Charlotte. That's right.
Well, she had so many beautiful dresses,
I had a hard time choosing, but as you can see,
I didn't choose. I, I just went right in and bought.
Well, that's awful pretty.
-Look at that. -Yeah. What do you think?
-Isn't that looking nice on her? -Very pretty.
-Thank you. -Goodie on--
-Yeah, it's real pretty color. -Yeah, it's your color, honey.
Thank you.
So, uh, what do I owe you?
Oh, we're all square.
Oh.
Well, you two have been, uh, very sweet to me.
-Thank you. -But it's, uh, it's time
that I move on. I'm going home.
Well, you have a safe trip.
Thank you very much. I-I'm sure I will.
-[Grace] We're gonna miss her... -Get my--
-...aren't we, Harlan? -[chuckles]
Thank you. Appreciate everything.
-Bye bye. -Bye.
-[Harlan] Bye. -Take care now.
Okay.
I knew a family in Archwood, Missouri
when my father and I spent a year there.
Pearsalls.
They were a poor family with 6 children.
A strong, loving family.
Uh, and I consider them my friends.
Then a series of terrible things happened to them,
one right after the other.
Mr. Pearsall lost his job at the factory...
and they were too poor to have saved any money.
A few weeks later, Mrs. Pearsall discovered a lump
in her breast, and she had to have it removed.
And then there was a fire in their house
in the middle of the night,
and it seemed as if what little they had
was being taken away from them.
And I saw this strong, loving family fall apart,
and it was a painful thing to see.
But things got better little by little.
Uh, their friends in the community got together
and came to their aid.
Carpenters and electricians and other workers
built a new house for them.
Production at the factory resumed,
and mister Pearsall got his job back.
And today, Mrs. Pearsall is alive and healthy.
Valene, I think what I'm trying to say
is that things get better.
We outlive the hard times.
We must have faith to endure
and accept the love of others to help us endure.
Valene, if you can hear me,
call me wherever you are.
Your mother and I and all of your friends
love you...
and want to help you.
Please let us.
[Valene chuckles]
This is my first time traveling cross country.
Looks good right here.
Why don't you come sit with me?
[girl] Okay.
Let me get my bags down. Wait a minute here.
Okey-doke. There you go.
-Where are you going to? -I'm going back home.
-Where's that? -Tennessee.
T-e-n-n-e-s-s-e-e.
Hey! That is great. You're really good.
I got a candy bar here in my purse.
-Wanna share some of it? -Okay.
Here we go. Half for you and half for me.
[laughs]
Does your whole family live in Tennessee?
I don't have any family.
-What about your husband? -My husband?
You said you were going back home.
I don't have a husband, darling. I've never been married.
[chuckles]
Wanna hear something funny?
Sure.
Abby actually agreed with me.
That's gotta be a first.
I got the feeling she didn't like Paul Galveston either.
She met him for the first time today.
You know, this is the second time today
that the name Galveston came up.
-Really? -Yeah.
Secretary from Galveston Industries
was one of the Tidal Basin m*rder victims.
-One of the copycats? -Yeah.
But Jezik was to meet with a police informer today,
but before he got there, a couple of g*ons jumped
and did a number on him pretty bad.
-You're kidding me. -Yeah, and he thinks that
they're from the police department.
I just thought you should know.
You don't have to say that.
Mack...
I'm really worried about Val.
Where'd she be?
She'll be all right.
-What's this? -[chuckles]
It's a stupid thing.
Today at work, I-I burned it on a coffee machine.
-What time do you wanna get up? -Bad?
-Huh? -Did it blister?
-No, it's okay. It's... -Take the Band Aid off.
Let the air get it.
It's nothing.
You know, you sprain your wrist at work,
then you tripped and bruised yourself.
-Now you've burned your finger. -I'm a klutz.
What's going on, Karen?
Hey, are you worried about me?
You know, you're not the only one with a dangerous job.
[scoffs]
If there was something going on, you'd tell me, wouldn't you?
-[Karen] Yes. -Huh?
You know I love you. You know you can talk to me.
You know you can be honest with me.
It's nothing.
Good night.
In Minnesota.
A brunette, but she looks just like Valene Ewing.
[phone rings]
No, she doesn't speak Spanish,
but we appreciate your information.
Pacific World Cable.
Uh, yes, she is. One moment, please.
Mrs. Ewing, there's a call for you.
Oh, thanks.
Hello?
[Peter] Mrs. Ewing, this is Peter Freilich.
We've got some good news for you.
I think we've made some real progress.
Well, where are you calling from?
Enoch, Nevada.
Where?
Enoch, Nevada. It's a small town.
I picked up Val's trail.
She took the Salt Lake City bus.
She got off at Enoch.
You haven't found her yet, have you?
No, no. I talked to the guy here who runs the bus depot.
He sold her a ticket yesterday.
She left on a bus for Tennessee.
Well, then I guess you better go to Tennessee.
I assume you don't want me
to tell anyone else this information.
You assume right.
We'll keep in touch.
[melancholy music playing]
[Valene] Thank you.
Honey, would you check this against those, uh,
those, uh, bills on the counter there?
See if I got it done.
Excuse me, sir.
-You the manager here? -Yeah. I sure am.
I saw your sign in the window there.
I'm looking for a job.
-You ever wait on tables before? -Oh, yes, sir. I have.
Need a little money to pay your bills, huh?
[chuckles] No, actually, I need a little money to feed myself.
Well, I don't see why we can't try you out.
What's your name?
-Verna Ehlers. -[man] Verna?
Well, Verna, you come on in here 10:30 tomorrow morning.
In your uniform, ready for work, and, uh,
we'll we'll see how you do on the lunch shift.
Thank you, sir.
I'll do that. Thank you much.
