06x18 - Fly Away Home

Post by bunniefuu »

Val. Come here.

-Stop. -Let go of my wife.

-Stop. -You don't even know her.

I know I love her for who she is right now.

I don't care who she used to be or any of that stuff.

You're hiding something, Galveston.

Something big, I think. And I'm gonna keep on looking.

Give Val a chance to get you out of her system.

A clean break, Gary, and do it now, or we're through.

I don't know who Galveston is.

What I do know is we're involved with him,

and somehow, he's involved with m*rder.

[theme music playing]

[theme music continues]

[man 1] Now, if any man can show just cause why they may not

lawfully be joined together,

let him speak now,

or hereafter, forever hold his peace.

Val. You remember me. I know you do. Val.

I don't know you, and I've told you that.

Can we just continue with this, please?

Just walk out of here with me right now.

You don't have to do a thing. I'll take care of everything.

How long are we gonna listen to this fool?

Let's just go on. All right?

-Uh... -Valene.

[dramatic music playing]

Aah!

[Gary] Valene! Val! Come here.

-Damn it. -Stop.

-Let go of my wife. -Stop!

-She's not your wife. -Let go.

-She will be in just a minute. -You don't even know her.

I know I love her for who she is right now.

I don't care who she used to be

or how many books she wrote or any of that stuff.

You knew who she was?

Yeah. Well, maybe I did.

I didn't wanna lose you.

And you've been happy, haven't you?

So who was I hurting?

You were hurting her. She needed help.

Buddy, I told you, back off!

-Hey, you hold that. -No, Gary. No!

[grunts]

I'm sorry I didn't help you before.

It's okay.

You okay?

Ugh!

She wants to go. Let her go.

Let's go home, Valene.

[soft music playing]

[Abby] Yes. Gary Ewing.

He is still registered.

Yeah. Please, would you ring his room?

Ah, yeah, oh.

All right, can I leave a message then?

You ask him to call his wife, tell him it's urgent.

Thanks.

I'm surprised.

I didn't think you'd want to reach Gary right now.

Why not?

Well, now that you've established

a relationship with Paul Galveston.

If you're talking about that strange encounter

that you barged in on the other day,

I'm as much in the dark about what he wanted as you are.

Well, somebody better turn on a light.

Because two of Galveston's top executives

just confessed to the Tidal Basin murders.

You're kidding.

And Mack thinks Galveston

is linked with the murders,

and we're doing business with Mr. Galveston.

No, we're not doing business, Karen.

Gary is, and he won't tell us anything, remember?

Well, if we asked him, he wouldn't lie though.

What does that mean? I would?

-[sighs] -Oh, of course.

If there's backstabbing and double dealing going on,

Abby's got to be involved somehow, right?

Well, there's been plenty of...

Karen, get off it!

I'm in no mood to spar with you right now.

I told you, I don't know what's going on with Galveston.

That's the truth.

If you don't want to believe it, it's too damn bad.

Abby! Listen to me.

Mack is closing in on Galveston and that scares me.

It scares me for Mack, and it scares me for us.

Because I don't know who Galveston is,

or how powerful he really is, or what he wants from us.

What I do know is we're involved with him,

and somehow he is involved with m*rder.

And that ought to scare you too.

Where are they? Don't you clown.

Oh, Mack, give him a break.

He only set him up a couple hours ago.

All they had to do was pick up a couple of suspects.

How long could that take?

-Mack. -You lost them.

I don't believe it. You lost them?

We never found them.

We went to pick them up, and they were gone.

Beautiful. Really beautiful.

I've got two signed confessions.

Galveston must have gotten to them,

gotten them out of the country or something.

Now what are we going to do?

Back to square one.

Not for him.

[sobs]

Thank you.

[sniffles]

I don't-I don't even know what I'm crying for.

I'm not crying for Parker.

I don't think he meant you any harm.

Yeah, but he-he lied to me, knew the truth about me

and who I was.

And I... I needed to know it,

and he-he hid it from me.

Well, he loved you, Valene. He didn't want you to go away.

[sobs]

[sniffles]

You know, just then when you...

You called me Valene.

I knew you meant me.

Me. Valene, we're here.

And I know who you are.

Gary.

You know, ever since you showed up,

it's been so strange.

It's been like I've been Verna and Valene,

but never at the same time.

More like tuning in and out,

you know, like late at night with the radio on.

Only in between stations.

I think I'm happy.

Why do I feel so lonely?

Oh.

[soft music playing]

[sighs]

Maybe, uh...

Maybe Verna's gone away, and you know you'll miss her.

She got you through a pretty rough time.

Yeah.

I just wish I could remember better.

This feels right, though.

Something...

familiar.

Warm.

I feel safe with you.

Guess that means I trust you.

Shh.

Oh.

We've always loved each other, haven't we?

[music continues]

-We had some good times. -Yeah.

How is she?

Oh? What time?

Oh, Gary. That's wonderful news.

Thank you. Bye-bye.

-[laughs] -What they say?

They're coming home tomorrow.

Gary said she's better, but...

but not to expect her to be perfect.

Well, what does that mean? I mean...

I don't know what to think.

Well, Val's coming home, Mother. That's all that matters.

Oh.

Where's Cathy? Isn't she coming?

We stopped seeing each other.

Oh, Joshua.

Things just weren't working out.

Oh. But she's such a sweet girl, and you seemed so happy.

I was.

But she was, uh, turning down singing jobs

so that she could stay here with me.

I felt like I was holding her back.

And I don't like her singing in bars, either.

That's not good for my image.

Oh, honey, you sound so old-fashioned.

I mean, in this day and age,

it seems like you two had the perfect arrangement.

Young, talented, and both with your careers about to take off.

Well, I can pursue my dream here. She can't.

Show business is another world.

Oh. It's become a part of your world, too.

I mean, look at the response you've been getting

from your TV appearances.

It's not the same.

She's an entertainer. And I'm a communicator.

And look what happens to people in show business

when they make it big.

They go away.

They leave the people who love them.

And I don't want that to happen to me.

[soft music playing]

Again.

[crickets chirping]

[knock on door]

[horse neighs]

What's going on, Galveston?

Excuse me, MacKenzie, but this is my home.

And I'm old-fashioned enough

to think that I ought to be able to shut the door

in the face of anybody

who comes making demands in a tone that offends me.

You want me to go outside and come in again?

I guess I don't understand.

I've been cooperating with you.

My people have been cooperating with you.

And from what I hear, all that cooperating

has got you what you wanted.

Yet you, uh, don't seem to be happy.

I've got two signed confessions by two men that disappeared.

That's not cooperation. That's a diversionary tactic.

What are you diverting me from?

You're hiding something, Galveston.

Son, I'm old, I'm sanguine,

and I don't worry about Social Security cuts.

And there's nothing interesting enough in my life to hide.

If there were, I wouldn't bother.

I don't have enough time left to make the effort.

A man that talks about his own mortality,

that's pretty impressive,

but I don't buy it any more than you believe it.

You think you're gonna live forever.

You're hiding something, Galveston.

Something big, I think.

And I'm gonna keep on looking.

By the book from now on, MacKenzie.

You want to come to my home or office, get a warrant.

Where am I gonna get a warrant?

Don't play games.

I hear Senator Sumner

gets them for you by the gross.

-Where are you going? -I'm going home.

I'm going to go home.

-Don't start. -Don't start with me, okay?

I'm gonna see Val. I'm gonna see my kids.

How is that woman, huh?

I don't know. Karen says

that Gary's bringing her home.

I'll hustle him out, Senator.

It's a little late for that, isn't it, Fred?

I'll call you if I need you.

Every man has his limits, laddie,

and I've reached mine.

You and your friends are too fond of games.

You're interfering with my business.

We're... Wait a minute. We're interfering with your business?

It's your cronies in Washington

who blocked my appointment

to the Land Management Committee.

If you'll excuse us, Ms. Avery...

She can stay. It's your pals who are trying to corrupt me.

We're not interfering with you.

-I need you with me. -No. You got that? No.

I'll have Laura's kids spell it out for you.

Okay.

You want to help MacKenzie get warrants?

Fine. Let him get his warrants.

He won't find anything.

I'm not partial to putting anything important

down in writing.

Then let MacKenzie's investigation run its course.

No, it'll never run its course.

Guys like MacKenzie never let up.

Now, to me, MacKenzie is just a pain in the butt,

but I'm doing business with some pretty nervous people.

It could be very damaging, very bad for business,

and maybe bad for MacKenzie, too.

Now, you, you help me out on this, Greg.

You call him off, and I'll see you get your appointment.

I'll see what I can do.

Say hello to your kids, Ms. Avery.

[airplane droning]

[tires screeches]

-You nervous? -Yeah.

No.

I don't know.

-I guess I should be, huh? -[sighs]

No. You don't have to be.

Come on, will you? It's all legal. Everything's there.

-Mr. Galveston? -It's okay, Earl.

Let him through. Man's got a job to do.

I'm going home. I got the damnedest headache.

-Sorry to hear that. -My people are expecting you.

They've been told to give you anything you want.

-Good hunting, laddie. -Thank you.

-Excuse me. -Hope you feel better.

All right, let's go.

Maybe they missed their flight.

No, no, they would have called if they had.

Oh. Of course they would.

I'm sure they're on their way

over from the airport right now.

Lilimae, you can't expect

too much right away, you know.

I know she's been sick, I know.

Well, we're all gonna do our best

to help her get better.

-[doorbell rings] -Oh, I'll get it.

Oh, Laura. Uh...

You thought I was gonna be Valene. I'm sorry. Sorry.

Come on in.

-I feel bad. -No.

I thought they would be here already.

This is really bad timing.

You won't remember this, Joshua.

You were just a baby.

I had an aunt in Roanoke who died,

and I had to go there for a few days.

It was the first time I left you since you were born,

and when I came home,

your daddy had you on his shoulders,

standing at the old Union Station.

And when you saw me step off the train,

you started to shout, "She's back! She's back!"

[laughs]

I don't know what made me think of that just now,

why it seemed appropriate to tell.

Mom?

[soft music playing]

Oh, dear God. [sobs]

Oh!

Oh!

You look like you haven't been gone at all. [laughs]

You look just like my little sweet pea.

Oh, but I'm being selfish, aren't I? Uh...

You remember your brother Joshua?

Uh-huh.

And Karen.

-Karen. -Oh, welcome home.

[sighs]

And Laura.

Hi, Valene.

Hello.

-Ben. -Hi, Ben.

We have to give her time, that's all.

I think as soon as Gary and I

get our life back together again,

then everything's gonna all come back to me.

I'm glad you're home.

You're looking tired, honey.

Oh, come on, sweet pea, I'll get you to bed.

You gonna come with me, Gary?

Oh, well, you go ahead.

Gary, you didn't see a doctor in Tennessee?

No, and I don't want a third degree right now, okay?

Well, I'm gonna go upstairs

and say good night, and I...

I'm gonna go home.

I think we should all go home.

So, Gary, what, uh... what happens now?

I don't know.

It's gonna take time.

I just don't know.

[fire crackling]

-Hi. -You back?

Yeah, I just dropped Valene off at her house.

-How is she? -Confused.

We've got to get her to a good doctor.

You eaten?

I'm not hungry.

Look, Abby, I know how crazy all this has been

and how tough it's been on you.

You've been terrific.

More understanding than anybody

has a right to expect.

Ah, you're right.

It has been tough and crazy,

and God knows, I've been terrific,

but don't make the mistake of thinking

-that I'm understanding. -What?

Why should I be understanding, Gary?

I'm your wife. Valene isn't.

She was in trouble. She still is, for that matter.

Oh, well, then let me make something

very clear to you, all right?

Your relationship with Valene has to end.

You've got to cut her loose, Gary.

As soon as she starts to recover...

-No. -...I will.

Now.

I can't live like this anymore, Gary.

I won't live like this.

My concern for Valene

doesn't interfere with our marriage.

Gary, how can it not interfere?

You run to her every time you think she needs you,

every time she thinks she needs you.

That's interference, isn't it?

I'm your wife. I need you.

My children are so confused,

they don't even ask questions anymore.

I can't very well turn my back on her while she is in this...

Yes, you can. Just do it. Walk away.

Uh, Gary, it'll keep me happy.

It'll keep us whole,

and believe me, in the long run,

it's the very best thing you could do for Valene.

[sighs]

Hasn't it ever occurred to you that maybe without you around,

she and-and-and Ben Gibson might have patched up

their differences and gotten back together again?

I don't think she can depend on Ben at the moment.

How do you know she can't depend on him?

She's never had to. She's always had you.

All right, fine. That's in the past.

From now on, though, Ben Gibson takes over.

Let Ben make emergency house calls.

Let Ben rescue Lilimae

when she locks her keys in the car.

Let Ben go to Tennessee. He's dying to do it.

Give him a chance, Gary, and give Val a chance

to get you out of her system.

A clean break, Gary, and do it now.

Right away. A clean break, or we're through.

[soft music playing]

Tomorrow I'm going to get on the phone

and find her a good doctor.

Well, if we let her rest for a few days,

maybe she'll come back to herself.

Rest? Absolutely.

But doesn't this scare you?

I think the woman needs medical help.

Oh, Ben, I know it's been a terrible shock.

-Where's Gary? -Oh, darling.

Uh... Well, he'll, he'll be back.

I couldn't sleep.

-Everything is... -Oh.

Well, look at the pretty flowers.

They're beautiful. They're pretty.

Yes.

Hi.

You-you don't remember who I am either, do you?

I mean, not really.

Well, I know that you're my brother.

I-I know that I should know you.

Well, I just came into your life a little while ago,

-but I... -How did that happen?

God. He works in mysterious ways.

Absolutely right, Ben.

In fact, I think that we should all kneel down

and say a silent prayer to thank God

that Val's come home safely.

-Oh, that's a lovely idea. -Right now.

Oh. Uh, Ben,

you take Valene's hand.

Close your eyes, Valene.

[soft music playing]

I don't know what he's up to.

I wish I did.

So would you help me with Galveston in the first place?

Look, Mack, there are some things

I don't want to tell you.

Personal things. You just have to trust me on this one.

Trust you? I'm not that crazy. Come on, will you?

I'm not even sure you're not setting me up.

Nobody's setting anybody up.

Look, let me give you a little advice.

You got to learn when to pick your fights.

Can't be pushing all the time.

Sometimes, uh, in order to achieve your objective,

it helps to lay back.

Yeah? So? What are you telling me?

I can tell you that Galveston's a heavy hitter.

Guy's smart. And he could be dangerous.

Let me ask you a question.

What did you think you were going to find

in those files at Galveston's?

I don't know. You look around, you see,

you put some things together,

figure it out, make a connection.

You're a lawyer. You know how it works.

Those girls who worked

for Galveston, the secretaries,

you don't think that he had them k*lled, do you?

I've got two guys that signed confessions.

Two guys who work for Galveston,

not Galveston.

Well, maybe he gave them the order.

-Why? -I don't know.

You figure it out. What do you think? Sex.

Have you ever found one shred of evidence,

even hearsay, that Galveston's a weirdo?

No.

Well, maybe the girls had found out

something about the organization they shouldn't have.

-Why? -What?

Right. That's what I want to know.

You got the guy in the defensive.

Relax.

Let up on the guy.

Wait till he relaxes.

[Kelly] Actually, I've given up on you.

[man ] I'm glad.

Oh, you are glad, aren't you?

-Of course. -But not completely glad.

Because even though you weren't ready for me,

you liked the way I kept coming on to you.

It's great for my ego.

Ah. And devastating to mine.

I'm very sorry.

They're very nice legs, Kelly.

Your loss.

-[tire bursts] -[tires screeching]

[sighs] What can I do?

Time me.

I have a black belt in tire changing.

Three minutes.

Da da da dun. Dun dun dun dun. Da da dun tara

[metal rattles]

It's broken.

I guess not even a black belt

can do it with a broken jack.

Huh.

I'm very popular these days.

Lots of visitors.

Must be because I'm so handsome.

Thanks...

Well, of course that's true.

But I... I understand

Mack MacKenzie wants to see you in jail.

[chuckles]

Jail doesn't scare me. MacKenzie doesn't scare me.

And you used to amuse me.

But nothing amuses me today,

like granddaddy of all headaches.

I'm sorry to hear that.

Uh, I don't want your sympathy.

I want you to come to the point.

All right.

Mack has search warrants, right?

And he's going to go through your papers.

Even as we speak.

And you have certain papers that concern me.

Quite a few, I imagine.

Look, don't play games with me, all right?

You've been holding the scepter of papers

and... and Easton's notebook over my head for weeks now.

I want to know, is Mack going to find them or not?

Ah, yes.

The adoption papers and the notebook

that incriminate you in the theft of Valene Ewing's--

I had nothing to do with that.

So you've said.

Well, if you're innocent,

what difference does it make?

Please, just tell me.

They are Gary's babies, aren't they?

That's not too hard to figure out.

Why else would you be so desperate?

Well, I think he has a right to know.

I... I think he'll be delighted.

I'm not going to let you do this to me.

Well, if I don't, MacKenzie will.

And I'd rather be the one

that gets Gary to his heirs.

I like getting credit for happy endings.

We might as well just start walking.

-[vehicle approaching] -[sighs]

Oh, no, yes! Yes, indeed!

Ha, ha, ha! Salvation!

I love it! I love you guys!

Hey! We... we...

[horn honks]

[man whistles]

[man] Ah, thanks for stopping, guys.

-I needed jack. -I'll get it.

Oh, thanks.

We've got a hydraulic. No problem.

Good. We'd been sitting out

here having lunch.

Been out here for I don't know how long.

-You sure know how to suffer. -Oh, well, yeah.

Oh, well, yeah, it's only fun when you...

Anyhow, I appreciate you guys stopping like this for us.

We'll change the tire, pal.

Oh, that's okay. I can, uh...

Hey, buddy, would you give me a hand?

Yeah. Sorry, yeah.

-Hi. -Hi.

[grunts]

Oh. There's a T-bar back there too, friend.

Would you want to get it?

[metal rattles]

Should be shoved in behind the toolbox.

-Yeah. -Oh.

Yeah, I see it. Thanks.

Here you go.

Thanks.

-I'll get the spare. -Thank you.

Valene, Cathy asked you a question.

-Oh, I'm sorry. -It's all right.

You know, I can come back later if you want to rest.

No, no, no, no. Please... please stay.

I just wonder why Gary hasn't come home yet.

Well, I told you, Valene,

he has some business to take care of.

Very important.

Yeah.

Would you send him up as soon as he gets here?

-Yeah, sure. -Okay.

Is she worse than you thought?

Oh, she'll be all right. She just needs some time.

She didn't even recognize you.

Maybe it runs in the family. Neither does Joshua.

Oh, I've been just sick at heart that you two have

stopped seeing each other.

Yeah. Well, it wasn't my idea.

Joshua?

Well, you... you're just in time for tea.

How is Val?

Well, I was just going to check.

Now, I'll be right back.

You don't move from here.

You don't have to keep me company.

It's okay.

It's great Valene's home. She seems tired.

Have you stopped singing at Isadora's?

-No. -I see.

You see things in black and white.

Things aren't that simple.

Yes, they are.

Good and evil. It's that simple.

Singing at Isadora's does not make me evil.

I love you.

Why is that evil?

You sure you don't want to come with us?

Of course I want to. Who wouldn't?

But he's my boss.

Doesn't mean I'm not grateful, guys.

Thank you very much.

No problem. Let's go.

Thanks.

[sighs]

-Okay, what? -What? What?

Your mind is working a mile a minute.

What did you see?

Miniature component radio receivers.

Very powerful and super high tech.

There were hundreds of them in the truck.

What are they for?

They're for monitoring satellites.

They're like those dish antennas.

Only these are much, much more sensitive.

They're used in clusters.

And each one of these is... is tuned to a separate band.

And the whole cluster focuses on

one particular part of the sky.

I mean, these are more sophisticated than anything

I've ever seen, and I've never seen so many of them.

Thief. What's so special about them?

Why do you have that look on your face?

Where are they going with them?

Wherever this road goes.

No. No, this road doesn't go anywhere.

This is a maintenance road for Empire Valley.

It's for bringing in materials and equipment.

It doesn't go anywhere.

But then...

-What? -Yeah.

What?

[suspenseful music playing]

[soft music playing]

Gary?

Lilimae just called.

And, um, well, Val's been asking where you are.

Lilimae wants to know what to say to her.

[scoffs]

You going to go over there tonight?

No, I don't think so.

Well, it seems like a funny time to quit on her.

Quit?

You know, one of these days,

I'll tell you what she was like in Tennessee

and what it took for me to get her back here,

-don't tell me I quit on her. -Uh-uh. All right.

I can't keep hanging around with her.

My wife resents the hell out of it.

It's no good for Val.

As long as I make her need me,

she's never going to get on with her life.

Oh, who knows?

Maybe with me out of the picture,

things will work out between her and Ben.

But is this the right time?

I can't choose the day and hour.

Well, you better.

She still thinks she's married to you.

Somebody has to tell her she's not.

Who's it going to be? Me? Lilimae? The shrink?

All right. I'll tell her.

Karen.

You can't tell her.

I'll tell her tomorrow morning.

[scoffs]

What did Gary say when he called?

Well, I didn't have much of a chance to talk to him

because Val was right there.

Gary's been so patient with Valene.

-I just don't want to... -[footsteps approaching]

I'm sure he's on his way.

Yeah, I just can't imagine where he was all night.

I guess he had a lot of work to take care of now

-that we're back. -Mm-hmm.

-Well, how do I look? -Oh, beautiful, sweet pea.

Yeah, thank you.

Don't think anything's happened to him, do you?

No.

Did he say why he was coming over?

Well, this is his house.

Why would he have to say anything?

Gary. Oh, I've been so worried about you.

Where have you been? Hmm?

-Hi. -Hi.

Lilimae, Joshua.

What's the matter? Is something wrong?

I thought we'd go for a drive.

Oh, that sounds wonderful. I'd like that.

Oh, sweet pea, take my shawl.

It's cool out.

-Come on. -Thank you.

We won't be gone long.

[soft music playing]

Ugh.

[sighs]

Do you remember the first time you ever saw the ocean?

[wave splashes]

Yeah.

It's when we first moved here.

-I was so scared. -Of the ocean? Why?

No, not of the ocean.

Just the fact of finally seeing it.

All my life, I'd wanted to.

Even when I was little, I knew that the ocean

would probably be the biggest

and the most beautiful

and the most powerful thing I'd ever see.

I thought just by being close to it,

it'd just make me better.

Make me think clearer and feel deeper

and just know me more.

When we moved here,

I knew that the ocean was practically

next door.

[chuckles]

I got shy about going.

-Why? -I don't know.

I guess I was just afraid

that it wouldn't live up to my dreams.

I'd be disappointed.

So that's why I went alone the first time.

How was it?

Everything I expected it would be.

I still get the same feeling just being close to it.

Val...

What?

You and I aren't married anymore.

If you dig down way deep and if you think about it,

you'll remember and you'll know.

We were divorced, Val.

It didn't work for us.

We tried, but we just couldn't make it.

Listen to me.

There are people all around you who love you

and want to see you through this.

Are you going away?

No, but I got to get out of your way.

-No. -I'm the past, Val.

Our trouble is that we always lived in our past

when you were 15 and I was 17.

It was so good then that we tried to recapture it

and... and we just couldn't.

No. [sobs]

[soft music playing]

Val.

I'm sorry.

I really am.

Come on.

Come on. Come on.

Let me take you home. Come on.

You're going to get wet.

[door closes]

[Greg] What are you doing here?

[Abby] Look, I'm in big trouble.

-Paul Galveston... -That's big trouble.

Well, he knows certain things about me and if...

if that comes out, I'll be ruined.

I don't want to hear about it.

I already know 100% more about you

than I want to know.

Uh, Greg, please just talk to him, will you?

I hardly know the man.

That's not true. I know you're connected with him.

Let's go. I've got an appointment.

Greg, I know you know him. I've seen you with him.

But if the truth came out...

What truth?

The truth about you and Galveston.

If I told everything, I know you'd be ruined.

Don't threaten me, Abby.

I will tell everything I know, Greg.

It's time for you to go home.

I'll tell everything I know about you...

-Let's go. -...and Galveston

and everything. I'm not bluffing.

Come on.

Greg, I know you can fix it for me.

I want you out of here.

I'm not going to lose everything now. I'm not.

I know you can fix it.

Please. I'll do anything.

Anything.

But if these receivers are so secret, then...

No, no, no. These themselves aren't classified.

But they're more advanced than anything

used in commercial broadcasting, right?

Absolutely.

And they are used by the military

as components in some devices which are classified.

I haven't been able to find out which ones yet.

Well, what is your theory then?

I'd like to know where they're taken.

I know you have some ideas.

Empire Valley's being used as a cover.

Oh...

-[doorbell rings] -...great.

And I'm smack dab in the middle of it.

Oh, Karen, could you come, please?

It's Val.

[Karen] Val?

Careful of that step. I just did it. It's still wet.

What are you doing?

Valene?

Did you look upstairs? Might be upstairs.

Maybe that's a good idea.

Look upstairs, huh?

You know, you can almost see yourself on this floor, Val.

Yeah. That's 'cause it's still wet.

And y'all haven't even waxed it yet.

-Yeah? -Yeah.

-You could've fooled me. -Oh, God.

It's hard work, but it sure makes you feel good.

-Yeah, it keeps you busy. -Yeah.

-And safe. -Yeah.

-Like Verna. -Yeah.

[sighs]

Did I say something funny?

No, you're funny. [laughs]

You're trying to play tricks on me.

Don't talk to me like that.

I wouldn't trick you. We're friends.

Tell me, does Verna have a better life than Valene, huh?

-It's good life. -That's not what I heard.

You're talking about Parker. Parker was...

Parker was a louse.

There are louses everywhere,

but there are good guys, too.

You know, good... good like you,

good like me, like your mother, Karen, Ben.

-You're good, Val. -No.

You don't mind if I stick around for a minute to see Val.

-We want to see Val. -She's not here.

She's not here. She's not here.

-She is. She is. -No.

-She is. -She's not.

We need you, Val.

[soft music playing]

[sobbing] Mack, what's...

-What's wrong with me? -Okay, Val.

-What's wrong with me? -All right, Val.

-[sobs] -All right, Val.

Yes, sir, good to talk to you, too.

Okay, I'll see you tomorrow. Right.

Who was that?

Galveston. He wants to see me tomorrow.

-What about? -I don't know.

Empire Valley, I guess.

We got kind of behind when I was in Tennessee.

Abby, I saw Valene this morning.

She wasn't in good shape.

She thought she and I were still married.

Oh, God.

I told her we weren't.

That's why I saw her.

You were right about making a clean break.

I thought you should know.

It's all right. [sighs]

It's only right that you should tell her, um...

I'm glad you did.

Gary...

make love to me.

[soft music playing]

I pushed Gary to tell Val

they weren't married anymore.

Maybe I pushed too soon.

No, she had to be told.

Gary tried to let her down

as easy as he could.

I'm about to make some coffee. Would any...

would anybody like some?

I'll take care of the coffee.

You take a load off your feet.

Somebody better say something funny

or I'm going to cry.

Hi.

[suspenseful music playing]

You're in trouble, Cookie.

Look, I want those papers and that notebook.

-What are you doing? -I've had enough.

I can't live this way anymore.

I've got to get on with my life.

Take your hand away. I can't deal with you now.

I'll make you a deal.

You give me the papers and I'll help you fend off Mack.

[grunts]

Uh, I've got a terrible headache.

-Mr. Galveston. -Go home.

I'm not going to let you beat me.

Ugh.

It's okay, Cookie. You can keep the notebook.

I don't need it.

Ugh. Uh, it's some headache.

Mrs. Ewing, would you...

would you call my doctor?

-His name is... -Are you kidding?

Call him yourself, Cookie.

[grunts]

[theme music playing]
