[theme music playing]

[music continues]

[music continues]

[music continues]

Don't do anything foolish, will you?

Come on, this is her day. It's a special day for her.

Don't you think I know that? I know that.

[tranquil music playing]

[birds chirping]

Val, I just...

You look beautiful.

Thank you, Gary.

Can I talk to you for a minute?

In private?

I didn't plan on being here.

I'm glad I came, but I didn't...

[chuckles] I brought Olivia.

Thank you.

[Gary] She was real glad you asked.

You really do look beautiful.

Well, it's expected of the bride on her wedding day.

Yeah, I remember.

Why don't weddings ever go smoothly?

It's a law of nature.

Weddings and volcanoes never erupt smoothly.

-Gary, I-- -Val.

You happy?

What?

Are you happy?

Yes.

No doubts?

No doubts.

It's important to me.

No.

Can I kiss the bride?

[laughs]

Gary, I'm...

I'm afraid that would cause a terrible scandal.

[birds chirping]

[clicks tongue] I hope you're happier with Ben...

than you've ever been in your life.

[sobbing]

[crying]

-How are you? -Oh, Karen.

Am I supposed to feel like...

like my whole body is coming apart?

[laughing]

Well, as I recall... Yeah.

Okay, then I'm just... I'm- I'm doing fine.

Valene.

You're doing the right thing.

I know, I am.

And you're holding up pretty well.

[chuckles]

You don't have to lie to me.

[chuckles]

Ben.

-I wanted to wish you the best. -Thank you.

Hey, Betsy.

Bobby.

[sighs]

Take good care of your mama, huh?

[Elliot] Your insurance company's making you do this.

They'll cancel our group policy

if every member of the construction crew

doesn't get a complete physical.

And it has to be on a Monday?

We're in no position to quarrel

with our insurance company's requirements,

no matter how much it might inconvenience us.

Don't you think it's time you told me what's going on?

You're too suspicious, Elliot.

Ah, you've taught me well.

[Abby] Look, just think about the health

and welfare of your crew

and get them to the medical center

by 8 a.m. Monday morning.

Then, give them the rest of the day off.

And you have a checkup, too, you know?

You strike me as a prime candidate

for high blood pressure.

Thanks for your concern.

[exhales]

[sighs]

Cathy.

Get out of here.

Why do you think anything you say, Joshua,

will make a difference, you're a liar.

I don't know who you've been talking to,

but I don't know why you would choose to believe them over me.

[Cathy] You used your own mother to try to keep me in the house

when you knew I wanted to move out.

You have no conscience at all.

[Joshua] Lilimae told me that she was dying.

[Cathy] Would you stop? Don't make it any worse.

[Joshua] Why would she lie to me?

Why would she tell me she were dying if she weren't?

["Bridal Chorus" playing]

Sorry I'm late.

-Where are the babies? -Shh, they're sleeping.

You guys better get started.

Thanks, Marsha.

Valene, will you have this man to be your husband?

To live together in the covenant of marriage.

Will you love him, comfort him,

honor and keep him in sickness and in health,

and forsaking all others,

be faithful to him as long as you both shall live?

I will.

Benjamin, will you have this woman to be your wife?

To live together in the covenant of marriage.

Will you love her, comfort her, honor her

and keep her in sickness and in health,

and forsaking all others,

be faithful to her as long as you both shall live?

I will.

[woman] Oh, gracious and ever-living God,

look upon this man and this woman

who come to you seeking your grace,

that with true fidelity and steadfast love

they may honor and keep the vows

and promises that they make.

Ewing residence.

[Elliot] Mr. Ewing, please.

[woman 1] Mr. Ewing's not here right now.

Would you like to leave a message?

Ah, can I say who's calling?

Mrs. Ewing, I'm out at your broadcast center.

I don't know what's going on out here,

but I sure as hell am going to find out.

[Abby] Elliot, don't get hysterical.

You've got more at stake here than just a job, you know.

Well, sometimes there are things more important

than my son's career.

I will not be part of this anymore.

[sighs]

-You ready to leave? -Yeah.

Then, let's get the hell out of here.

Amen to that.

I, Benjamin, take you, Valene, to be my wife,

to have and to hold from this day forward,

for better, for worse, for richer,

for poorer, in sickness and in health,

to love and to cherish

until we are parted by death.

I promise to try and be a good husband to you.

This is my solemn vow.

I, Valene,

take you, Benjamin, to be my husband,

to have and to hold from this day forward,

for better, for worse,

for richer, for poorer,

in sickness and in health,

to love and to cherish

until we are parted by death.

I promise to try to be a good wife to you.

And this is my solemn vow.

[woman] Now that Valene and Benjamin have given themselves

to each other in solemn vows,

I pronounce that they are husband and wife.

Those whom God has joined together,

let no one put asunder.

["Wedding March" playing]

[all applauding and whistling]

[all cheering]

[exhales]

-Let's go! -Stop it.

[Joshua] You are coming with me.

[Cathy] I'm not going any--

[Joshua] I'm not going to hurt you. You and I are going

to go get your things right now, and we're gonna leave.

-Do you understand that? -Forget it.

I'm not going anywhere with you.

What do you think you're doing?

What! Wait a minute. That's enough.

[Joshua] This is none of your business.

-[Laura] You're wrong. -Mind your own business, huh?

I'm not going to live without you.

And you certainly are not going to live without me!

You got it?

-You alright? -Yeah. I'm alright.

[Cathy] I know, you know.

Oh, my gosh.

What is this?

I don't know.

I can't believe this.

[foreboding music playing]

[phone ringing]

[phone ringing]

"From your loving husband."

[phone ringing]

[Joshua] Did you get the flowers?

How did you get in here?

-I love you, Cathy. -Stay away from me, Joshua.

That's no way to talk to your husband.

[exhales]

You like chicken, I hope?

Well, if you made it, I'm sure that it's...

It's delicious. Oh, hey. Come on. You sit down.

You're the one that's been on your feet all day. Sit.

I, uh... I should be serving you.

Ta-da.

Oh.

This looks good.

I've never known a man like you, Joshua.

You act like I'm something special.

Always seem to know what I'm thinking.

You're so kind.

[sighs]

And there's no way he can be reached?

No, I can't leave my number.

Just tell Mr. Sumner that...

Never mind. Um...

I'll, uh... I... I'll try him again later.

Thanks.

[suspenseful music playing]

Ah, don't sit. Don't sit.

Is that an invitation to dance?

Yeah, I need the exercise.

Besides, I've been so lonely.

What do women do in the powder room all that time?

They powder. I thought you knew.

[chuckles]

Oh, boy, I'm glad we finally got away.

I could have left a day sooner for my money.

What are you talking about?

Gary, I haven't had my bath yet.

-Um, right. -Right.

So, um... how was the wedding?

Wedding? What wedding?

Was there a wedding? Today?

Did Valene look pretty?

-Can't say as I noticed. -[chuckles]

Why are you teasing me, Gary?

Because you're so beautiful when you're teased.

-Oh, yeah? -Okay. Okay. Ask.

Did you talk to Valene?

Who?

Where's your sense of humor?

Yes. I talked to Valene.

What did you say?

I wished her well.

-That's all? -I'm sorry.

Was there a message you wanted me to give her?

Just that I hope she's as happy with Ben as I am with you.

[chuckles]

I know.

[sighs]

[water pattering]

[suspenseful music playing]

[metal thuds]

[suspenseful music playing]

[alarm buzzing]

[knock on door]

-[scoffs] Is Linda inside? -No.

I remember you.

You're the guy that was at the diner that night,

-the preacher man. -Yeah.

And you're the guy that Linda doesn't want around anymore.

I think I'd like to hear that from Linda.

Well, she said that without saying it,

my literal-minded friend.

You know everything, don't you, preacher man?

Well, I know that if a woman didn't want me around,

I would be man enough to face that.

[laughs]

[Karen] And I'm so grateful, you could come on Sunday.

[Laura] Don't get any ideas, okay?

This is not a regular thing.

The weekends are for the guys.

I do my extra work between midnight and 6 a.m...

Do I- do I look it?

I hate you.

You look great. You need more work.

Listen, you shouldn't have come in if you had other plans.

No, no, really. It's- it's okay.

Daniel's going to spend the day with his grandmother.

Well, Jason has a game this afternoon,

but we'll be finished in plenty of time.

How does it feel having a live-in babysitter again?

A what?

-Cathy. -Oh, you mean, uh,

why did she move back in with me?

Yeah.

Because Joshua poses a physical threat.

What?

Has he hit her?

Mm-hmm.

Often enough so she knows it's not the exception.

Oh, my God.

Poor Cathy. I had no idea.

I saw that bruise on her face.

She just said... Oh, I should have known.

Does Val know?

I don't know. I just found out.

-[Karen] Lilimae? -I don't know.

They live in the same house.

I... I should have- I should have done...

Well, what are we going to do?

Well, why are you taking this so damn calm?

Well, because the hardest thing

and the most important thing has already been done.

She left him.

Now all we can do is just offer moral support

and a safe place for her to be.

Hey, thanks.

Listen, don't tell my mom

I was hitting the wall, okay?

-Okay. Is your mom home? -No, she went to the office.

But she's coming to my game.

We're playing the Hannibal Plumbing Aces.

-Want to come? -No.

-I'll come to the next game. -No, don't.

We're playing the Santa Barbara Hawks.

And we're going to get creamed.

Got to run.

-Uh, is Cathy in there? -No.

-When will she be back? -I don't know.

Well, you don't mind if I wait inside

till they come home, do you?

No. But if you leave, lock the door.

Mom says, always lock the door when she's not home, okay?

Bye.

[suspenseful music playing]

[tense music playing]

[clock ticking]

Would you like to have a cup of tea?

I can't live without you, Cathy.

And I won't.

It's over, Joshua.

You cannot abandon me.

I can't help you.

I said, I can't and I won't live without you.

I've already left you.

You're not listening to me.

I said, I will do whatever it takes,

whatever it takes to keep you.

Open the door.

Listen to me. Listen.

You are my wife.

I will have you understand that.

Please don't hurt me.

Do you think that I want to hurt you?

Am I so terrible just because I want you to listen to me?

I just want you to listen to me.

If you're not threatening me,

then would you just at least unlock the door?

[clock ticking]

Now will you listen to me?

[Laura] Honey, winning is not everything.

[Jason] You always say that, mom.

[Laura] Well, repetition doesn't make it any less true.

[Jason] It just makes it more boring.

Touché.

Well, you had fun playing, right?

-Yeah, sure. -So I rest my case.

I'm always right, you know.

I'm your mother. Mothers are always right.

[clock ticking]

You hurt me.

I hurt you?

Does that surprise you?

Joshua, I never meant to hurt you.

I never even tried.

[Joshua] Well, maybe that's why you're so good at it,

because you don't even have to try.

[clock ticking]

That show was all I had.

I came to Knots Landing with nothing.

Maybe you forgot that.

I came from a place that it would be hard

for you to imagine.

The things you presumed on growing up, I never had.

Sometimes I never heard of them.

Look at me.

I had nothing, Cathy.

I came here with nothing.

There are a lot of things that you can do.

But I only know the ministry.

[Laura] Okay. Tell your poison.

-Apple banana. -Apple banana.

Can we have two apple banana, please?

Thanks a lot.

Why don't we sit over here?

Okay. Tell you what I'm going to do.

You can have whatever you want for dinner tonight.

-Hot dogs. -Hot dogs. Oof.

Okay. Spaghetti.

Spaghetti. Fine.

Just promise me one day that you'll surprise me

and order something like liver, spinach.

You know, something healthy.

-Hamburgers? -Forget it.

-Mom? -Mm-hm?

Is Joshua staying for dinner tonight?

[tranquil music playing]

[Val] Would you stop?

[Val laughs]

Valene insisted that I call and find out how the babies are...

I did not. Oh, come on.

-Let me have the phone. -No.

Let go off the phone. You're going to have to.

Alright. Now I want to tell her that you're a liar.

Ben, are you there?

I'm here.

[Lilimae] Your babies don't even know you're gone.

And they are thrilled to be spending time alone

with their grandma.

How are you two doing?

We're, uh, tired.

Stop. Don't talk to her like that.

Yeah, just get the door.

No, I mean, tired, like,

you know, from social activities,

from museums, restaurants, cultural events.

Stuffin' nonsense.

[Ben] Valene, your mom says stuffin' nonsense.

Thank her for the flowers.

-What? -Thank her for the flowers.

Thank you for the flowers. They're beautiful.

Is my daughter coaching you?

What? I- I happen to like flowers.

They're beautiful. Thank you.

[Lilimae] Alright. Well, you're welcome.

And, Ben, uh, all jokin' aside,

I want things to work out when you get back.

All I want for my family, my whole family,

is for them to be happy.

And I want you and Valene to have the happiest marriage

there ever was.

You hear me?

Yeah. Okay. Thanks, mom.

-Come here. Give it to me. -Bye.

Give my love to Valene.

-My pleasure. -Come on.

[chuckles]

You silly. You need energy. Alright.

I can see this being a son-in-law

is going to be difficult.

What do you mean?

It's a good thing it has its compensations.

What?

Something your mom just said to me.

What did she say?

Give my love to Valene.

[screaming and laughing]

Stop.

[screaming and laughing]

Joshua. Hey, you staying for dinner?

Mom's making spaghetti.

No, no. Joshua's got an errand to run.

Why don't you go upstairs and get cleaned up,

or there's not going to be any dinner, okay?

I want you to get out.

Eric? Michael?

Try not to do to our marriage what you did to your own.

I want you to stay out of my house,

and I want you to stay away from Cathy.

Why don't you go to hell?

Oh, that's the best you can do, huh? That's it.

What, are you afraid to hit me the way you hit Cathy

because we're outside now?

Well, at least I'm willing to admit that I was wrong,

whereas Richard didn't have the chance

because you drove him away.

You have no right to talk to Laura like that, Joshua.

Boy, does she give you more chances than you deserved.

[Joshua] And you were the final--

-[Laura] I am her friend. -And I'm her husband,

you pathetic, broken-down witch!

I suppose you won't be happy

till she's as unhappy as you are.

Get in the house. Would you please set the table now?

Cathy, are you gonna let Laura make this decision for you?

No, it's my decision. I want you to leave.

-It's over, Joshua. -Cathy.

Just leave her alone.

-You okay? -Yeah. Yeah.

I'm fine. I'm fine.

-It was an accident. -Oh, right like hell it was.

Calm down. The man said it was an accident.

Let's take his word for it.

Why don't you apologize to the lady?

I'm sorry, Laura, that you tripped.

Come on. Michael, Eric, take Laura and Cathy inside.

Never again, fella.

Not anywhere, I hope.

I guarantee not in this neighborhood.

You understand?

No.

I'm going to file a formal complaint against you.

And with the five witnesses I have that saw everything

that you did, the police will have your number.

But more important than that, preacher man,

I've got your number.

And if he ever show your face in this neighborhood again,

I'll find so many complaints against you,

it'll make some defense attorney rich.

Why do you believe them?

I saw it with my own eyes.

I don't have to take anyone's word for it.

No, no, no. I- I'm not talking about this incident.

I lost my temper. I was wrong.

But what surprises me is with all your training

that you assume that there's only one wrong party,

that you don't want to be troubled

with hearing my side of the story.

Get out of here.

[Joshua] You don't want to know why I hit Cathy.

I hit her... more than once.

I hit her harder than I thought

I was capable of hitting anybody.

Because I wanted to keep her from using the drugs

that she's dependent on.

My wife is a drug addict.

So I am guilty.

Mr. Self-righteous prosecutor.

Just caring for my wife.

So now you understand.

[Lilimae] You've had enough?

[Joshua] Yes, thank you.

Joshua, why is Cathy living over at Laura's house?

Huh?

Better accommodations would be my guess, mama.

Joshua, I love you so...

You know...

There is help for whatever problem you have.

There- there are places.

You think that I need help, do you, mama?

Well, I...

I think you're troubled, Joshua.

I think I'm tired.

Honey, there's no shame in admitting you need help.

I mean, we all need help now and then.

Don't you see any irony

in a mother telling her son to go somewhere else?

To go to someone else for help?

Well, I will do whatever I can.

Tell me, what can I do?

Nothing, I guess.

Nothing.

Just like you did nothing when I was a boy.

Joshua, I'm so sorry.

You know, I would...

I would give my life to make that up to you.

Well, don't think that I was deprived

by your absence, mother.

-I always had father. -Joshua, don't.

I always had him to talk to.

I need to talk to you, father.

Talk to the Almighty, Joshua.

Pray.

But I'm sure he loved you, Joshua.

I was his son.

His son.

I didn't need his spiritual love.

I needed him to be a real father.

But he had no idea how to do that.

He didn't know that it's a parent's job to say,

"Way to go," or, "Nice job."

Or, "I'm proud of you, Joshua."

Or, "I love you, Joshua."

He didn't know.

He didn't know that you're...

You're not supposed to hit a child.

And hit and hit and hit and hit.

And my mother wasn't there to tell him.

Or to stop him.

But don't you worry, mama.

Everything's gonna be okay.

[crying]

[phone ringing]

[sighs] Yeah.

Frank Elliott's dead.

They found his body at the broadcast center.

[sighs]

[tense music playing]

[man] Well, if they're not packed up down there,

I should have the autopsy report for you tomorrow afternoon,

Wednesday morning at the latest.

But I expect confirmation of our preliminary findings.

Which is?

I'm Gary Ewing. How did this happen?

Well, he was electrocuted.

He overlooked the warning sign, apparently, Mr. Ewing.

-The cable was-- -Overlooked?

Frank Elliott knew this place like the back of his hand.

[Detective] What can I say, Mr. Ewing? It happens.

I'm sorry.

[Cathy] At the beginning of the song,

I want to do a little four, five line introduction.

You know, just to set it up.

Cathy, is there time for that?

Yeah, don't worry. I've talked to John.

He's gonna cut the guitar solo in half, I think.

-[sighs] -Don't worry about it.

-I promise, it's gonna work. -Okay, fine.

I mean, heck, it's only my job that's on the line, right?

-[Cathy] Don't worry. -12 minutes, everybody.

John, don't forget about the guitar solo, okay?

'Cause I want to do that little intro at the top.

Thanks.

Hi. I didn't know you were here.

You left these at home.

I- I thought you might be needing them.

Oh, my.

-Don't you look pretty. -Thank you.

Come on in.

-How are you? -Oh, you know me.

I'll get by.

I... I invited Joshua to dinner last night.

I thought maybe I could talk to him.

But I was too late, Cathy, honey.

Too late for him. Too late for me.

And too late to stop him from hurting you all these months.

I came to tell you that--

Lilimae, let's not talk about this, please.

[Lilimae] Humor me, darlin'. Just this once.

I came to tell you I'm sorry.

I'm sorry for all you've been through.

And I'm sorry for my part in it.

You have nothing to be sorry for.

Oh, I wish that was so.

See, I knew something was wrong.

I think a part of us always knows if we just admit it.

But I didn't know what to do about it, was the thing.

There was just so much mixed up in my mind.

Like wondering if...

if I had stayed with Joshua's father.

Could we have made a marriage of it?

And not wanting you and Joshua to be like me and Jonathan.

And hoping...

hoping that things weren't as bad as I...

I sort of knew they were.

Forgive me.

Forgive me.

You're taking this pretty lightly.

How am I supposed to react?

They're k*lling people out there.

They? Who are they and what can we do?

-[Gary] That's your job. -[Mack] There is no job.

There's no case.

My wife's life could be in danger.

-The whole operation-- -If it was m*rder,

you might be right. Come on, Gary.

If it was m*rder, the guy who did it

is probably sunning himself in Rio right now.

He doesn't even know why Frank Elliott was k*lled.

When did you become so cynical?

Realistic.

The people who hired the guy in Rio,

they're the ones who got away with m*rder.

-If it was m*rder-- -And that doesn't bother you?

Yeah, it bothers me.

It also bothers me that I spent years investigating

the Wolfbridge Group and Galveston Industries.

And no one goes to jail for it.

All I get is some two-bit baby stealing lawyer,

penny-ante stuff.

You put Wolfbridge out of operation.

I put Wolfbridge out of operation here.

They're c*ck. They avoid the light.

But you can bet your bottom dollar

they're in operation somewhere else,

somewhere where the people are less informed,

less powerful.

You're telling me you're not going to look

into Frank Elliott's death.

All I'm saying to you, my friend,

is that you give me a case I can win and I'll take it on.

Night, John. I'll see you later.

[Joshua] How'd my show go?

Come here.

[fan 1] Here she is.

Could I have your autograph, please, Ms. Rush?

One for me too, please? I think your singing is great.

-Oh, thank you. -[fan 2] We all do.

[fan 1] Could you write to my friend, Alan?

-Sure. -Two Ls.

-Sure. -[fan 3] Thanks.

-There you go. -Oh, great. Thank you.

Yeah, sure.

-Thanks. -[fan 3] Thank you.

Bye.

[tense music playing]

You're acting awfully mysterious.

I came out here because we have to talk.

And I figure your office is bugged now.

Are we being a little paranoid?

Don't we have reason to be?

Not a microphone, a cigar.

Don't you think some explanation is in order?

Yeah, the understatement of the week.

What do your PR people tell you to say at a time like this?

Same as yours.

Accidental death.

Damn it, Greg.

Elliot didn't have to die.

And the next line is, but somehow these things

just get out of hand.

Look, what I'm trying to tell you that I don't want--

[Greg] You don't have to tell me anything.

I'm not your confessor or your shrink.

I don't care what kind of bizarre explanation you have

for all of this.

Am I somehow getting the blame for his death?

I don't agree with your decision,

but it was well ex*cuted.

The police think it was an accident, so you'll walk.

You think I k*lled him?

[sighs]

I was sure you'd k*lled him.

You're probably right.

The office is bugged.

Turn it up. I like her voice.

How come you don't do that show anymore, Joshua?

[laughing]

Good question.

What?

It's not... my kind of show anymore.

How should I feel about you being married

to a TV personality?

I wouldn't worry about that if I were you.

It won't last.

[Linda] I think she's going to be a big star.

It's the married part that bothers me,

not her being a TV star.

That won't last either.

You mean it?

I guarantee that Cathy won't be in our way much longer.

Cathy was very troubled.

She was a burden to me.

I don't know how much longer I'd be expected

to carry that burden.

For as long as I could, I kept her from dying.

You mean suicide?

A kind of suicide.

[Linda] That's awful.

You poor thing.

[Joshua] Well, it's the life that she's chosen,

a life that leads to spiritual death.

She chooses death.

And the next time that she tries to k*ll herself,

I won't be able to stop her.

[theme music playing]

[music continues]
