07x19 - The Key to a Woman's Heart

[theme music continues]

[mellow music playing]

Good morning.

Is it?

I guess not.

[slamming]

Excuse me.

Are we gonna talk about this or what?

If you don't like the cereal, get another.

[cutlery clanking]

I wasn't talking about the damn cereal and you know it.

-Don't yell at me. -I wasn't yelling.

-Could have fooled me. -I wasn't yelling.

-What do you call that? -That's yelling.

That wasn't yelling before.

-Listen to us. -I'm not yelling.

You're upset. Whenever you're upset, I get upset.

So we're both a little upset.

It's my fault that you're upset?

I didn't say that.

I said I get upset whenever you're upset.

You don't think I have any reason to be upset?

I don't know what else to say. She gave me the key.

I didn't ask for the key. I didn't use the key.

But you kept it.

So what?

I told the truth about it.

Other guys get more sympathy

lying to their wives than I get for telling the truth.

Oh, yes, the truth.

Carrying around Jill's room key in your pocket

made you feel younger.

Well, I wouldn't worry too much

about your lost youth, Mack.

There's plenty of adolescence left in you yet.

-Morning, kids. -Morning.

Morning.

How's breakfast?

Yeah.

Cold, I gotta get to the office.

Oh, Mack,

tell Jill I said hi, would you?

[Eric] She's too old for you, man.

Now me, uh, I'm mature. Don't you think so?

-[Michael] Oh, yeah, right. -[laughing]

[Michael] Hey, I'm hungry. How about some pancakes?

-[Olivia] Oh, nice try, Michael. -[Eric] We think so.

[mellow music playing]

Alright, mom, almost ready.

You can bring 'em down in a couple of minutes.

Kids sent me down to find out what's for breakfast.

Okay.

Rice cereal?

-Mm-hmm. -And Monterey Jack?

No, tofu.

-Tofu. -Mm-hmm, thought I'd try it.

Well, you won't mind if I clog my veins

with some eggs this mornin' then.

No, you clog away.

After all, it's the grownup's responsibility

to monitor his own health.

I'm responsible. I'm as responsible as the next guy.

You don't think I'm responsible? Look at this.

You like it?

Mnm-mnm.

[laughing]

Go ahead and have your eggs.

Silly.

Tried Cathy yet?

No, I was gonna wait for a decent hour.

I mean, only Sgt. Rock and our twins

like getting up at dawn.

[Valene] Ben?

If Cathy already told Sonny the truth, what can you do?

I mean, you can't stop him from printing it, can you?

No.

There's no answer. I'm gonna have to go to work.

See, I would eat mine if you made it look

-like that in the morning. -Oh, would you stop it?

Get outta here.

-Bye. -Bye.

I'm already late for school.

Hey, I can remember a time when you wanted to be late.

One time ain't gonna hurt. Okay, I tell you what,

I'll drive and we can talk on the way.

I already got a ride Aunt Karen's bringing me.

[Gary] I just thought we could talk, that's all.

[Olivia] We already talked.

[Gary] Yeah, but you haven't told me why you won't come home.

I don't want to, okay?

You don't wanna tell me or you don't wanna come home?

Neither. I mean-I mean, both.

Aunt Karen.

Olivia, your mother loves you.

She misses you.

[Olivia] Well, I don't miss her and I don't love her.

I love you.

If you really love me, then why, why then--

Why what? What did I do?

Look, if I have done something, we can work it out.

Just leave me alone.

I don't wanna be around her

and I don't wanna be around you.

I'm not going home, ever.

Gary, come on.

I'm sorry.

Yeah, what the hell?

She's probably better off with you and Mack anyway.

At least this way she'll get a chance

to see a marriage that works.

[instrumental music]

-Hi. -Hi, Cathy.

Ben's been looking all over for you.

Oh, I'll check in with him in a minute.

-Watch out. He seems upset. -Cathy.

Hey, Ben. Listen, I'm really sorry I missed work

but I'm fine now. My voice is back to normal.

Good. Is Sonny around?

No, he's at a rehearsal.

He's playing tonight. I just came in for a fitting.

You know, Sonny's been really wonderful lately.

He bought me all these home remedies for my throat.

He's not wonderful. He's not wonderful.

He's not a professional musician.

He is a reporter.

It was Sonny who wrote all those stories

about you in "World Secrets."

How do you know?

He dictates his stories on tape. I heard one of the tapes.

Oh, God, Ben.

I-I told him everything last night.

I told him that Joshua fell off the roof

while he was trying to k*ll me.

Well, at least it's over now.

Oh, God.

I sure can pick them, can't I?

[frame glass shattering]

[shattering]

[sobbing]

[crying]

-[knocking on door] -[Ben] It's me.

-[sobbing] Oh, God. -Are you okay?

[sobbing]

Oh, man, I know Sonny believed me last night.

But he knew it was really important to me

to keep it a secret.

Maybe he won't print it. Maybe he won't.

[sobbing]

Ms. Avery's here.

Oh, and by the way, I have a lunch date

this afternoon, if that's okay.

No problem.

Why is that guy still here?

I hate training new help.

Besides, he knows the filing system.

Craig, he's after your money.

I mean, you're making it so easy for him.

He's gonna know this place inside out.

He already does.

Why are you acting like such a patsy?

Peter!

Yes, sir?

I just thought you should know that Mrs. Avery does not think

that you're my brother.

Mrs. Avery, I was a little surprised, too,

when my mother first told me.

I'm sure you were.

I bet it threw you for a loop to find out

that you had a billionaire for a father.

That's all. I just wanted you to realize

the kind of skepticism you're facing around here.

I've always known that.

He's not such a bad kid.

I am so sick of this long-lost brother routine.

You know, your jokes are really wearing thin,

and I'm tired of being the straight man.

You know, you ignored me for a long time and acted like,

like my help and my feelings were not important.

Well, I know you well enough to know

that you would not buy into this kind of con game.

You tell me what's going on or I'm out of here.

I have a brother.

I do have a brother.

Galveston's kept a file on the kid's mother.

He was sending her, you know, support payments.

Are you saying that Peter is really your brother?

No, he's saying that.

And you're gonna take his word for it?

Who does it hurt if he thinks I believe him?

Besides, it'd be nice to have a brother around.

I got a lot of work to do. I need the help.

Besides, it gets lonely here in this office.

Is that enough truth and honesty for one day?

Did that hurt a lot?

It was a strain.

That's enough.

[Peter] Mrs. Ewing, what made you change your mind?

-Abby. -[Peter] Abby.

[Abby] Changed my mind about what?

About seeing me.

I didn't change my mind.

I always intended to see you.

I was just waiting for the right time.

And the right time is when you find out I'm a Galveston.

The right time is now.

So how is Greg taking all this?

He's being very nice about it.

Nice? Greg? [scoffs]

I'm not naive, I know I'll probably have to go

to court to prove my claim.

That could take a long time.

It costs a lot of money.

And you probably think I should support your claim against Greg.

You know he's a close business associate of mine.

I handle a lot of Mr. Sumner's business.

I did the research on the planning commission.

I think we might find a few areas of mutual interest.

[instrumental music]

[Jill] Come in.

Well, you're knocking before entering.

Now that's progress.

Have a seat.

Thank you. [clears throat]

I thought you'd like to know that the governor backed you up.

Good. On what?

He said he never authorized reopening the Wesphall case.

Then he's telling the truth.

[Mack] Or he's covering for you both.

And why would he do that?

That's my question.

Why would he send you down here in the first place

if not to keep an eye on me and do things behind my back?

Now aren't we sounding paranoid?

Well, you know what they say, just because you're paranoid

-doesn't mean that... -Someone's not out to get you.

I know.

I am not out to get you.

I'm reassured.

Well...

You can have the key back.

Karen found it and she's very upset.

Do you want me to phone her and tell that nothing happened?

No. Thank you for offering.

I'm sorry that this didn't or couldn't work out.

You're very attractive. And I'm flattered.

But you're married.

I'm married.

-In other circumstances... -It might have worked out.

I know. It didn't work out so it didn't work out.

It's not the end of the world, Mack.

I mean, we'll survive. We're both grown-ups.

And this grown-up has mountains to climb

and places to go and people to meet.

That busy, huh?

And so do you.

[ominous music playing]

[sighing]

Well, to hell with you, Mack MacKenzie.

Karen, I've put up with about

as much of this as I'm gonna put up with.

-What are you doing here? -Olivia is my daughter.

We both agreed. She'd be staying with me until she calmed down.

Her principal called me and told me

she's trying to transfer to Michael's school.

-Now, I will not allow that. -Well, you're right.

I will go to court first and get her back.

Transferring in the middle of the year

-would disrupt everything. -Well, she shouldn't transfer.

And she has been doing so well at this school.

[Karen] Well, will you listen to me?

I wanna help Olivia, not hurt her.

I view this living arrangement as only temporary.

I want you and Olivia to work things out.

This is as hard on her as it is on you.

And I don't like any of it.

Well, why didn't you tell me about the transfer then?

Because...

I didn't know.

Olivia didn't tell me.

Well, I would have expected you to keep a closer watch

on her than this.

Oh, Abby, for God's sake.

For once, we're agreeing with each other.

Let's just try to straighten this out.

Excuse me, do you have a copy of "World Secrets"?

Thank you.

What is she doing here?

Your mom wants to talk to you.

-No. -Olivia, no matter...

what's happened, your mom only wants the best for you.

[Olivia] Sure.

And if you're going to be staying with us,

I think we better get a few ground rules established.

-Mm-mm? -Hi, honey.

Oh, where'd you get the eyeshadow?

From Denise.

You know I don't like you running around with Denise.

Um, Olivia, your principal says you want to transfer.

Well, I don't see why I have to come here.

Michael's school is so close to you,

and no one would have to drive me.

Well, I-I don't mind driving you.

It's silly for me to come all the way out here,

and I want to be a part of your family.

Olivia, it's really hard to adjust to a new school,

and you've been doing so well here.

I mean, you have a lot of friends.

[Olivia] All that you don't approve of.

And your teachers say that you enjoy the work.

I just don't think this is the right time to change.

Besides, I could pick you up in the morning and drive you.

No.

Well, there's no problem.

Michael can drive her.

Okay, fine.

Oh, it's fine with everyone but me.

Olivia.

Get out here. Out here.

Now, I don't care how angry you are at me

or Karen or anyone else.

I don't want you behaving like that.

Do you understand me?

[dramatic music playing]

She'll be alright.

[instrumental music]

[music fades]

[ominous music playing]

Damn it.

[Peter] Will these help?

This one is to my desk and the gold one

is to my file cabinet.

You don't keep anything here.

I want you to believe me.

I'd love to show you every scrap of evidence I have.

But my attorney says that--

Don't tip your hand, I know.

[chuckles] Yeah, I guess that's what that legal jargon means.

You don't seem to have any plans this evening.

[scoffs] That's cute.

Why don't you come home with me to dinner?

-What? -To my mom's.

Come on, I promise you we won't try to convince you of anything.

It'll just be a little getting to know you time.

And I can guarantee you she's a terrific cook.

If nothing else, I can prove that to you.

Relax.

[upbeat jazz music playing]

[audience applauding]

I'm sorry. I had to do it.

I mean, you're being destroyed by those articles.

I had to let people know the truth about how Joshua died.

[dramatic music]

Cathy, he was a monster, okay?

Don't you understand? I did it for you!

[Sylvia] My mother said she was doing it for me,

but I would never have been a dancer

if my mother hadn't approached me.

I think the happiest night of her life was when I played

the old Lyric Theater in Baltimore.

She brought the whole neighborhood.

Oh, please, that's cold. I'll get you fresh.

You're a great cook, you know?

[Sylvia] Yep, I'm a great cook,

and I can sew like nobody's business,

and I keep a spotless house.

I would have made one terrific wife, but I screwed up.

Never give a man what he wants until you get that ring.

My mother used to say the same thing.

Well, you should take advantage of our experience.

Especially mine.

I know these Galveston men.

Now, I'm not saying that Greg Sumner is like his father,

but you got to play your cards carefully.

-Mom. -Well, it's the truth.

Now, while Peter here, I brought him up differently

to be respectful.

Now, he's made me very proud.

All moms are alike, aren't they?

Now, I'm not one bit like your grandma,

-not for a minute. -[Peter laughs]

You know, my mother pushed me because she wanted to be a star.

I'm doing this for Peter, not for me.

I just as soon forget that Paul Galveston ever existed.

But...

my kid deserves what's his.

-I agree. -You mean that?

Yes, I just don't think that you and I agree

on what it is you deserve.

Well, that's enough, you two.

Here, eat it before it melts.

[footsteps clacking]

You're welcome.

The flowers are nice.

I make a peace offering and all I get is nice.

-Well? -That's nice.

What did you expect?

"All is forgiven, oh, beloved husband"?

Well, if I had a choice between that and nice, hmm.

Well, you think you can joke your way out of this.

Of course, you do.

You think you can joke your way out of everything.

You think it's cute,

just like your flirting with women is cute.

[sighs]

I'll stick these in water.

Oh, that's right.

When it hits too close to home,

let's change the subject, let's run away.

You know, I don't know how the world knew

what it was doing until you came along.

I was just getting water for the flowers

and now thanks to you that I realize that

I'm actually running from the truth.

You think you can treat me like you treat the rest of the world

with the subtlety of a steamroller.

Give in or get run over by Mack MacKenzie.

No doubt you've convinced yourself that

steamrolling also is cute and keep your voice down

or you'll upset Olivia and the boys.

I would love it if you treated me

like you treat the rest of the world.

Then I'd stand a chance and maybe we should fight

in front of the kids. Teach 'em a thing or two.

Teach 'em that one stubborn person

can drive another person insane just by her stubbornness.

Teach 'em that the right way to fight is for one person

to give in and the other person hold out.

No quarter, no compromise.

That's the way to make a marriage work.

Oh, very mature, like flirting.

So what if I was flirting? So what? Big deal.

Wasn't unfaithful.

I did not sleep with another woman. Did not.

N-O-T, did not.

But I'm married to the standard bearer.

Ms. Self-Righteous Make the World a Better Place.

Ms. Hate Injustice. Ms. Concern.

Everybody else can have compromise

but not Karen Fairgate MacKenzie.

No, not her. Not Queen Karen.

How about a little concern for me, huh, Queenie?

Are you saving that up for the rest of the world?

You know how I feel about your idealism, huh?

You wanna know? Do you wanna know?

Are you gonna turn out the light?

Yeah, I'll get the light, sure.

It's out!

[knocks on door]

What?

What happened?

I dropped the lamp.

-You okay? -She's fine.

I'm fine, you're fine, everybody's fine.

Night, Mom.

Night.

Night, Mack.

Right.

[door slams]

[door slams]

[sobbing]

[Abby] Why did you go to see her?

Because I love her and because I wanted to find out

why she ran away.

Did you?

No.

Well, then maybe it was your badgering

that made her wanna change schools today.

I did not badger her.

Gary, I think maybe we oughta just,

leave her alone for a while.

Something's going on here that you don't want me

to find out about, isn't there?

Olivia did not run away out of the clear blue.

I'm not gonna let her suffer because of you.

Don't you ever accuse me of hurting my own child, Gary.

Abby, Abby, Abby, what happened between you two?

Nothing.

Let me tell you something. Olivia's an honest kid.

Whatever it is, you're gonna have to face it head on

or you're gonna lose her.

Well, that was an education.

You didn't know we could go wrong

six ways to Sunday, did you?

Better now than later.

I want our development to comply

with environmental law to the last detail.

No problems with density or runoff,

no problems with any state agency.

Especially the planning commission.

Especially the state planning commission.

Isn't that Jill Bennett?

Jill? Hi, it's Laura.

-Avery, how are you? -Of course.

-Nice to see you, Laura. -You know Karen.

Karen.

Listen, I don't have to be at lunch for a while.

Why don't we have a little coffee?

We'll toast the next appointee

to the state planning commission.

-I can't. -I've gotta run.

-Rain check? -Sure.

Yeah, the coffee was just an excuse for me

to have a big fat donut anyway. You saved me from myself.

But really, the three of us ought to get together sometime.

Great.

I'm sorry.

[dramatic music playing]

Now you know, your mother can drive me crazy

in less than 30 seconds.

I thought it was more like 10 seconds.

But Peter's mother is, is, she's just so sweet, you know?

-Thank you. -She is that.

If she were your mother, I could, I could just run up

and give her a big hug and say it's gonna be okay.

Oh, she brings out the mommy in the relation?

I really like her.

-But? -I don't trust her.

[chuckles]

My lawyer tells me that old Sylvia and young Peter

are weighing in with some pretty hard evidence in their favor.

Yeah, well, let me tell you, there's some sort of scam

going on with Peter.

How would you feel if he was telling the truth?

-He did not. -But what if he were?

-I don't think about it. -Think about it.

Even if I thought about it, he's lying.

You wanna know what I think about it?

He is or he isn't.

[sighs] The wisdom of Solomon.

If he's lying and we catch him, it's over.

If he's lying and we don't,

I think he deserves whatever he can get.

A little Zen, a little Darwinism.

And if he happens to be telling the truth,

I wouldn't mind that either.

[gentle music playing]

You know, I really believe that you wouldn't mind.

And while we're waiting to find out.

-What? -What do you say...

we have a little dessert?

One of each.

-Sport. -One of each.

One of each.

When I'm behind the wheel, I can't worry about anything

but the car and the road. Everything else just vanishes.

Seems like an awful lot of risk just for a little relaxation.

Ah, life's risky.

This kinda driving is just a little more obviously risky.

Thanks for coming tonight. I really needed company.

Don't thank me.

I wanted company too.

Gary, I'm sorry about Olivia. Maybe it's just a phase.

Yeah, maybe.

So, what's bothering you?

I've made a real mess of my life lately.

[laughs]

How?

By acting foolishly.

What?

Why don't things ever turn out the way you planned them?

Oh, hell, if everything turned out the way we planned,

we'd lose the element of surprise.

Like I didn't plan on being here tonight.

[romantic music playing]

[piano music]

Don't we look serious tonight?

Don't we look lovely?

Thank you.

What would you like?

To drink?

Yes, to drink.

Just some mineral water. I came for the company.

I'm glad.

One mineral water.

You know, I don't want to jeopardize Mr. Sumner.

-After all, he is my... -I know, your brother.

But there are some things I think you'd like to hear

that wouldn't hurt him in the least.

Like what?

The planning commission is meeting next week.

I know Mr. Sumner wants you to vote

in favor of the water reclamation project.

Do you understand the full implications of that project?

Well, it's a 400-page report.

I haven't read the whole thing yet.

Well, the report doesn't say so in so many words,

but one effect of reclaiming the water for the lower

San Javier Valley is that water is diverted

from the Empire Valley area.

In time, Empire Valley would become dry, as dry as a bone.

And that would make my husband's land worthless,

wouldn't it?

Yes.

No, please, this is my treat.

Do you remember that family problem you talked about?

Yes.

Well, this is an estate lawyer that I think can help.

My treat.

Thank you.

Olivia's putting on nail polish.

Is she allowed?

She says Abby lets her.

Isn't that just like Abby?

You know, the Governor says

that he's not going to reopen the Wesphall investigation.

Oh?

No, I figured he was, because...

Because?

I just figured he was.

Good night.

[sighs]

I want you to know how I feel.

I know how you feel.

How do I feel?

[clears throat] You feel angry.

And you don't understand that.

I understand it,

I just want to know how long I've to suffer for it, you know.

I've had enough of this.

I didn't do anything.

I wasn't unfaithful to you.

Not literally.

Well, that's the point, isn't it?

Is it?

Actions speak louder than words, Mack.

You said it with your actions.

You led that woman on.

And you try to justify it to me by saying you feel bad

because you're growing old.

I've got news for you, Mack.

Everybody's growing old.

The difference between you and me...

is that you talk as if your life is over.

I think my life is just beginning.

I thought our marriage was just beginning.

You've blown this all out of proportion.

[Karen] Have I? What about the next time?

Would I be blowing it all out of proportion the next time?

-Karen. -No, tell me.

I want to know, I want to be prepared.

Will you use some woman's key the next time it's offered

or if... if you feel that life's passing you by,

will you decide to make the first move...

and rent the room yourself?

You don't mean that.

Please, Mack. I can't.

[somber music playing]

Karen.

[mellow music playing]

Goodnight, Gary.

Well, I'd agree with that assessment so far.

Gary, I really like you

and I'm in just the sort of mood

to do something that I might regret.

Why do I get the feeling that "but" is gonna be the next word

out of your mouth?

But I'm not thinking clearly right now.

And?

And you're married.

Only on paper.

There's a reason for that paper.

It protects people.

It didn't protect me

and right now it's getting in my way.

[mellow music continues]

-But it is. -Is what?

In the way.

Can't be the real reason.

I don't want to make another mistake.

Goodnight, Gary.

[sighs]

[instrumental music]

[Valene] I don't know. Sounds to me like you want revenge.

[Karen] That's not what I would call it.

Okay, then what would you call it?

I don't know. I want reassurance.

I just, Val, wait a minute.

You're-you're making me feel like the guilty party.

Well, you're making Mack sound like

-he's the guilty party. -He is.

-Of what? -Of... Val.

-Of what? -Of keeping the key.

And not using it, okay?

Val, stop it.

Karen, come on.

I'm not trying to hurt you. Really, I'm not.

I just want you to see, I want you to see for yourself

what you want out of this.

I want my pride back.

Oh. At the expense of your marriage?

Why does it have to be either or?

I want both. I want my pride and I want my marriage.

[sighs]

-Oh, Val. -Oh, baby.

What are my choices?

Well, you can either keep worrying yourself sick

and finally decide that you don't trust Mack anymore,

that you can't possibly stay married to him,

or you can take a deep breath and swallow your pride

and forget about that key, which he never used, Karen.

I'm telling you, he never used,

and get on with your marriage and your life.

Why is it all up to me?

Oh!

Karen, it's not all up to you.

Mack is gonna have to do his share too.

I wish, I just wish I could get rid of this anger.

But I feel betrayed.

He hurt me so much.

[car engine revving]

[Peter] Why are you making this easy for me?

-[Greg] Why not? -I expected a fight.

Life's too short, kid.

Besides, brothers shouldn't fight.

Leave that up to the lawyers, that's what they get paid for.

Then you don't believe me.

I didn't say that.

I am the son of a lousy father.

You strike me as the kind of kid

who could also be the son of a lousy father.

The question is whether it's the same lousy father.

Or maybe it doesn't matter.

Of course, it matters.

If I don't deserve what I...

Believe me, kid,

you're gonna get exactly what you deserve.

[Peter chuckling] Mrs. Avery said the same thing.

Getting what I deserve is beginning to sound more

like a threat than a promise.

I am your brother.

I believe you, kid.

I choose to believe you.

In any case, you're no threat to Galveston Industries.

I have no intention of threatening...

You gotta learn to button your lip, kid.

You're no threat to Galveston Industries

because you want your share of it. You're smart.

So you're gonna see that nothing happens to it

until you do get your share of it.

I believe in family, kid.

If you're family, you deserve your fair share

of your father's estate.

Right down to the last paper clip.

If you're family, you're gonna get it.

And if you're family, you can prove it...

by helping your brother recover what Gary Ewing stole.

Empire Valley.

And if in the process,

if we were to bring down Gary and Abby Ewing,

well, I guess that would be their family problem.
