[Mack] Karen, what is it?

That was Paige's grandfather.

Yeah, well, what?

You're not gonna believe this.

I'm not going to believe what?

-I don't know how to tell you. -Try words, Karen.

Your real daughter, Paige, is dead.

-What? -Russell Winston

just said his granddaughter is dead.

Why would he say that?

Because maybe she is.

Come on, Karen, we both know that Paige is here with us.

I mean, that's not what he meant.

He meant that he disowned her. That's--

That he's a vicious old son of a--

He has disowned her only because she's my daughter.

That's not what he meant, Mack.

I know. Wait a minute. Let's not get crazy here.

We both know that Paige is alive.

She came from out of nowhere.

We don't know anything about her. She could be anybody.

-And that man said his granddaughter was dead. -Paige is a carbon copy of Anne.

-There's no way you can convince me that Anne isn't her mother. -People look alike, Mack.

Not-- not that much alike. Not that similar.

[doorbell rings]

[doorbell rings]

[doorbell rings]

-[Valene] Mack. -Yeah.

Karen, there's been an accident, Mom and Olivia.

-[Karen] Oh, my God. -Yeah, Olivia was driving and Mom was in the car.

-Are they all right? -Well, we don't know yet.

That's why we're on our way to the hospital.

-Could you keep an eye on the kids? -Absolutely.

-Okay. -Okay.

-I will call you from the hospital. -All right.

-As soon as we know anything. -As soon as you know.

[Valene] Oh, wait, wait, wait.

Here's her Popples and the "suck",

and everything for them to play with.

-Can you take it? -All right. I've got it.

Don't worry about them. We got them.

[♪]

[hospital din]

Olivia.

[Abby sniffles]

Oh, my baby.

[Abby sniffles]

-Are you all right? -Yeah, I'm fine.

-[sighs] You sure? -Yeah.

[sighs] You weren't speeding, were you?

-It wasn't my fault. -All right.

Tell me what happened.

There was this truck. I'm-- It swerved into my lane.

It was getting dark. He ran me off the road.

Did you get his license number?

No.

Did Lilimae get it?

I-- Lilimae didn't even see the truck, I don't think.

She was talking to me.

[sighs] Thank God you're all right.

How is Lilimae?

She's still in the emergency room.

You could see where her arm was broken.

Shh, shh. It's all right.

Not your fault.

Olivia, darling.

Oh, I'm so glad to see that you're okay.

-How's Mama? Yeah. -Where's Mama?

She's still in the emergency room.

Val, I'm really sorry.

I'm sorry, too. I am.

It-- it wasn't my fault.

This car swerved into my lane.

And it was going so fast, I didn't have time to get out of the way.

[Valene] Just as long as you're all right.

[woman speaking on PA]

There it is.

Mama, are you all right?

I've been worried sick about you.

Don't fuss. It's just a broken bone.

Oh, are you in pain?

Well, they gave me something to take away the pain.

I-- I don't feel a thing.

I just feel a little lightheaded.

Who's taking care of my grandchildren?

Mack and Karen. How long do you have to be here?

Overnight, I don't see why, but that's what they say.

Mama, if that's what they say,

then that's what you're gonna do.

Well, I already told the doctor I don't sleep well in hospitals.

I won't get a bit of rest.

[Mack] What would she gain by pretending that she's my daughter?

[Karen] I don't know.

-And how would she know so much about Anne and me? -I don't know.

And the locket. How do you explain the locket?

I can't. Now, be quiet. Their kids are gonna wake up.

I'll explain it to you.

Anne gave her that locket

because Paige is Anne's daughter,

and my daughter.

Do you really believe that,

or do you just want to believe that?

-Mack, all I want-- -Karen--

-[door clicks] -[Paige] Hi!

Oh, my feet.

The crowds were awful.

I went Christmas shopping for everybody.

Oh, good.

Good. Which one's for me? The big one, I hope.

Uh, actually, I-- I couldn't decide

what to buy for anyone,

so I ended up buying all sorts of things for myself.

-Can you believe that? -[Mack chuckles] I sure can.

Yes, I can.

But I don't believe you're Paige Matheson.

-Oh, come on, Karen. -Why?

Because she's dead.

-What? -Who are you, really?

[Paige] I'm Paige Matheson.

-I said, who are you? -I am Paige Matheson. Mack.

Then why did Mr. Winston say Paige is dead?

Well, maybe he doesn't think that.

-Maybe he just said that. -Why would he say it?

-I don't know. -I don't believe you.

If I said I don't, I don't.

What is this? Are you calling me a liar?

She's calling me a liar, Mack!

[melancholy music playing]

[knocking on door]

[♪]

Paige.

This isn't the way to handle it, Paige.

Don't go.

[moans] That's good.

-You feeling better? -Mm-hmm.

A little lower?

[sighs] How much lower?

-Oh, that's nice. -[Gary chuckles]

You know, sex therapists say that 80% of all sexual pleasure

is between your ears.

Well, I don't know. Maybe it was 90%.

Maybe we should do some research.

I think you're right.

[woman speaking on PA]

Whoa, Jill.

Gee, it's nice to see you feeling better.

[sighs] What are you doing here?

Olivia was in a car accident.

She's all right.

But Lilimae was with her, and she got her arm broken.

She's here in this hospital. I just thought you should know.

Yeah, right. Where are they?

Right outside.

[woman speaking on PA]

Honey? You okay?

[sighs] It was awful.

Abby, Lilimae would like to speak to you.

Okay.

-Uh, can I see her? -Sure, why not?

I'll be right back.

[woman speaking on PA]

[Ben] Come on in and see how badly she's feeling.

Oh, now stop that. I'm fine.

I-- I feel fine.

-I never doubted it for a second. -Oh.

She looks fragile, but she's tough as nails.

[Valene chuckles]

Are you feeling better, Lilimae?

Yes, I'm okay. How's Olivia?

She's real sorry about the accident.

Well, you tell her to-- to come visit me at home.

-You hear? -I will.

Speaking of home, I'm going to go check

on how the twins are doing with Karen, bye.

-Yeah, I got to go, too. Take care, honey. -Oh, bye, Gary.

Oh, Valene, why don't you go with Ben?

You probably want to know if the kids are okay.

-It's all right, Mama. He's going to check. -No, look.

I-- I want to speak to Abby alone.

Oh, trying to get rid of me, huh?

Oh, no, no. [chuckles]

-H-- hand me my purse, would you please? -Sure.

Lilimae, look...

I don't want you to worry one bit

about the hospital bills, okay?

That's the last thing I'm worried about.

When I got in Olivia's car...

I spotted this on the floor.

And I stuck it in my bag.

You know, she was driving far too fast.

I don't know why I hid it.

That was probably the wrong thing to do.

If she was my daughter...

I don't know.

[whispers] I don't know.

I don't know.

[♪]

[Olivia] Why won't you believe me?

You believe her? Why not me?

You are just presuming that I'm guilty.

Am I supposed to believe that Lilimae is lying?

She never said she saw me doing coke.

She just found some in my car.

-It wasn't mine. -Then whose was it?

I don't know. It's probably one of my friends'.

[Abby sighs]

Yeah, that's what you said

when we found your grass in Michael's car.

And you were lying then.

I cannot believe how unfair you're being.

And I can't be--

Olivia...

you're my baby girl.

How can you want to hurt yourself like this?

I don't see why you're accusing me.

I don't do drugs.

[♪]

[door slams shut]

[knocking on door]

Yes.

Hi, Paige.

If you knew what my grandparents were like,

you would understand that dying

was the better alternative to living with them.

[Paige sighs]

Last year, I picked up a hitchhiker...

a young woman my age.

We had a wreck.

I was thrown clear, but the-- but the car burned.

And when I came to...

it was all over.

I don't know what made me think of it then.

And I don't know if I'd do it again.

But she was already dead.

There was nothing I could do to help her.

I hid.

I just hid and waited.

The next day, the police said that I died in the fire.

It was my car, and I was last seen driving it.

And so they naturally assumed that-- that I was dead.

I let them believe I was dead.

I didn't plan it.

I just took advantage of what happened.

No dental reports?

What?

Oh, to ID the body?

I guess it was too badly burned.

So you didn't mind your grandparents

thinking you were dead?

My grandparents have always hated me.

After Mother died, it just got worse.

They treated me like dirt.

They don't deserve to have a granddaughter.

And your father?

If you knew what he did to me, you wouldn't ask.

-What did he do to you? -Never mind.

Paige, look.

You don't have to live with them.

You don't have to see them.

But you should call them and tell them that you're alive.

[Paige] What, call them on the phone and say,

-"Hi, folks, this is Paige?" -Yeah.

Mack, you of all people should never ask me to do that.

You knew my grandparents. You know what they're like.

If anything, you should congratulate me

on figuring out, uh, how to get away from them.

[door clicks close]

[solemn music playing]

[Mack] I'm in law school.

My third year.

I'll be taking the bar exam this year.

I've been, uh, clerking at the Deputy District Attorney's office.

I've, uh-- I--

I got a good shot at the DA's office when I get out.

Uh, listen...

what I wanted to say, Mrs. Winston, Mr. Winston...

was, uh...

I love your daughter.

I love Anne.

And I want to marry her.

[♪]

[Karen] You've got to do it, Mack.

We have a moral obligation to let them know she's alive.

After the way they treated me.

Right.

After what they did to Paige and to Anne.

I've got no obligation to them whatsoever.

-Mack. -Karen!

As far as I'm concerned, the Winstons can go to hell.

[tense music playing]

[door shuts close]

[indistinct conversation]

It's okay. [chuckles]

Those are my friends. Why can't I talk to them?

You can talk to them inside school.

Don't you think you're overdoing this, Mother?

[scoffs] I can't believe you're doing this.

Olivia.

I'm not doing this to punish you.

I'm doing it to help you.

You could've fooled me.

[♪]

[knocking on door]

-When are they releasing you? -Tomorrow morning.

Oh, I cannot wait to get you out of here.

-Gonna miss your bedside manner. -Not a chance.

There is something you can do for me.

-Ah. -Would you go by my apartment?

People have been bringing me robes and nighties, but--

What's, uh-- what's wrong with nighties?

I don't have a single pair of shoes.

That's because your feet weren't meant to touch the ground.

-Oh, please. -And because bare feet are so sexy.

-Just bring me these shoes. -What do you get me?

[Gary laughs]

[doorbell rings]

-[Valene] Mama. -Hmm?

What are you doing? Come here. Let me get that.

I'm not helpless, Val.

I can still do my work around here.

I know you can, Mama.

I just came to tell you that you have a visitor.

-A visitor? Who? -Come here, sweetie.

Olivia. Oh, am I glad to see you.

-How are you? -[Lilimae laughs]

-How are you, Lilimae? -I'm fine.

-Better for seeing you. -I'm going to let you two chat.

I have some work I want to do on my script.

Mm. Good to see you, sweetie.

[laughs] Come on. Sit down.

I wanted to come sooner, but I couldn't get away.

Oh, I understand. School comes first.

-Yeah. -[Lilimae chuckles]

I--

I'm really sorry about the accident.

I know you are.

Olivia.

I know what you're going to say.

And I just want to tell you

whatever you found in my car didn't belong to me.

I didn't even know it was there, honest.

Honey...

I understand a lot about people and their problems.

[scoffs] God knows, uh, I've had enough problems of my own.

And if you ever need someone to talk to...

you know I'll be here to listen.

I mean that.

I know.

And you know that I know what I know.

Lilimae...

I'm sorry about everything.

The accident, everything.

Me too.

If there's anything in that backpack of yours...

that you would like to leave here with me,

I won't say a word.

Just leave it here with me, please.

Just leave it here.

[Olivia sighs]

Lilimae, I haven't got anything.

[somber music plays]

I've got to go.

Okay.

Just tell me if there's anything I can do for you.

You do the same, you hear me?

[♪]

[♪]

Olivia, did you leave your shoes

and your sweater lying on the kitchen floor?

-Yeah. -Well, you better go pick them up.

-Right now? -Yes, right now.

-[Olivia sighs] -[Abby sighs]

[Abby sighs]

What are you doing?

What do you mean, what am I doing? I'm not doing anything.

You were. You were looking through my things.

No, I wasn't looking through your things, Olivia.

I thought about it, but I didn't do it.

Don't you think I deserve any privacy?

Why are you getting so upset? Do you have something to hide?

No! How do you think I feel?

You go through my things.

You-- you think I lie.

[sighs] I hate it here.

You treat me like I'm a criminal.

[Abby sighs]

I mean, it's 120 pages long.

It wouldn't even take an hour to read it.

Do you think they could at least find an hour?

I don't care where they read it. They could read it in the johns.

Just as long as they would read it.

Why don't you call what's- his-name, your-- your agent?

No, forget it, forget it. I'm-- I'm just--

I'm not going to talk about it anymore.

I'm not going to think about it. I'm not going to--

You should call Paige's grandparents.

We're talking about your script.

No, we're not talking about that anymore.

You should call her grandparents.

-I told you I couldn't, Val. -Karen, you have to.

If she is Paige, then they have to know that she's alive.

And if she's not, they have to know

that someone's trying to impersonate their granddaughter.

Mack believes she's his daughter.

And never having seen this Anne,

I can't judge this "uncanny resemblance."

I don't know what to do. The whole thing's a nightmare.

Let's just complain about your script.

We're not talking about the script anymore.

We're not.

You really believe she's an imposter?

I think that you do.

Well, her story is so far-fetched,

it could almost be true.

Oh, come on, Karen. It doesn't sound true.

-Mack believes it. -Do you really think he does?

Well, he acts as if he does.

And-- and if he-- as long as he does, I--

I guess I'm just gonna have to live with it.

I mean, I can't keep checking up on her.

I can't monitor her calls. I can't open her mail.

I can't hire a-- a private detective.

[Karen sighs]

I'm just gonna have to...

live with it.

[somber music playing]

[suspenseful music playing]

[♪]

[♪]

[Abby sighs]

[Gary chuckles]

So...

you glad to be home?

Glad to be out the hospital.

But I hate this place.

I have been here a year, and it doesn't feel like home.

Oh, you want a house

with a white picket fence and a porch swing?

I want a home.

As in, um, be it ever so humble, "There's no place like,"

and "Show me the way to go,"

and "Home is where the heart is?"

Don't tease me. I do want a home.

I don't care if it has a porch swing

or a white picket fence.

And I want you in it.

Gary, let's get married.

Marry me.

Um...

you think we're ready for that?

I am.

Sure know how to make someone feel wanted.

You think we know each other well enough?

Yes, I do.

You don't have any questions you want to ask me?

No, why?

I mean, you think you know

everything there is to know about me?

I know that I love you.

[romantic music playing]

And that's enough.

[Gary sighs] Well...

I know I love you.

-[Olivia] You don't believe me. -It's not the issue.

If you trusted me, you'd give me my allowance.

Not this week.

What do you expect me to do without money?

I can-- I can't even buy a hamburger.

-Or a pair of socks. -Or drugs.

Is that what you think I do with my allowance?

[sighs] Maybe.

Oh, I see.

I guess I can understand why you don't trust me.

Because you don't trust anybody.

You think everybody is just like you.

Lying, cheating, and mean.

Whatever I am, I learned it from you.

Oh, no, young lady. Oh, no.

You're not going to blame this on me.

Whatever you're doing, you're doing to yourself.

And I'm not going to give you money

to contribute to your problem.

Mother, I can walk away from my problem anytime I want to.

Because my problem is you.

I have a doctor's appointment for my amniocentesis.

You want to come along? You are the expectant father.

If I look expectant, look closer.

Sorry, I asked.

Don't you think we should have talked about this

before you became pregnant?

-I didn't plan it. -Uh-huh.

So you were as surprised to hear about it as I was.

Yes, I was.

Weren't we, uh...

taking precautions?

You know as well as I do that we were.

It was an accident, and...

I might add a happy one.

-I'm not happy about it. -Well, that's your problem.

No, it's not. It's our problem. We did this together.

We have to be responsible for this accident.

So what do you want me to do? You want me to have an ab*rtion?

I'm not so sure that the world

is ready for another Greg Sumner.

Cheer up.

Maybe the test will show I'm expecting another me.

[door clicks close]

[Mack] "This will never work out."

That's what I told your mother when we first met.

Because we were so different.

That's what I thought when we first met.

Why?

Well, because we were like strangers.

We had no history.

You know, being related is one thing,

but father and daughter...

that's different.

And now that you've known me, what do you think?

Well, I know I want to be a parent to you,

and I want to make up for all the years that I--

I wasn't around for you.

Let me put it to you this way.

When your mother and I first started dating...

she was so soft-spoken and prim and proper, and--

and I knew how to yell a lot better than I knew how to talk.

The problem was the more I yelled...

the less I heard.

And then she'd start to cry.

But we cared enough about each other

to keep working at it.

-And you know what happened? -No.

Your mother learned how to yell,

and I learned how to talk.

And things got a lot better between us.

The point is...

Paige, there's got to be honest communication.

However you do it, there's got to be honest communication.

You get my drift?

Mack, I swear, everything I've told you is the truth.

Paige, wait a minute now.

All I'm saying...

is that...

I want to be a parent to you,

and I want to make up for all the years

I wasn't around for you.

Families, real families, are built on trust.

So why don't we start by being honest with each other?

Okay.

Okay.

[♪]

Here are the editions of the Times you're asking for.

How do I find a specific section of the paper?

-What are you looking for? -The obituaries.

Thank you.

[♪]

-Gary. -Hey.

You've been waiting to see me, huh?

-Anything urgent? -Uh, no, no.

I just need some advice.

Oh, and you came to see me, huh?

Well, I do admire your judgment.

sh**t.

I know something I shouldn't know,

and I don't know what to do about it.

That's it? Well, that makes it perfectly clear.

All right.

-Has a crime been committed? -No.

Well, I don't think so.

Well, that gives you plenty of leeway.

Well, I don't know.

Um, maybe it is ill*gal.

You don't want any leeway.

I want to know what to do

when someone has been dishonest about who they are.

Oh, someone you love.

Someone.

You want my advice.

Well, my advice, well...

if it's someone that you don't know and...

don't care about, either confront them with it

or forget it.

But if it's someone that you love...

well, maybe you need to give them a chance.

Trust them?

[somber music playing]

How can I do that when they've already been dishonest?

I don't know how to answer that.

[♪]

You shouldn't work so hard. Too young to be so serious.

Is this interesting to you, Paige,

to see what people do in real life?

My life is real, Michael,

even though your mother doesn't think so.

None of you know what I have been through.

Yeah, well, she doesn't know that you stayed up all night

transferring funds all around the world.

Michael, I know you're angry with me,

but I couldn't tell you what happened.

The truth is...

you're the only happiness I've had.

I really loved you, Michael.

[school bell rings]

[♪]

[♪]

[mouthing words]

[tense music playing]

Paige tells us her grandparents believe

that she died in an automobile accident,

and the newspapers say she drowned

in the Mediterranean.

Karen, "was presumed drowned."

Obviously.

But she, Paige, whoever she is--

I'll ask her about it.

You'll ask her about it.

Mack, ordinary, normal young women don't-- don't...

solve their problems by pretending they're dead.

Certainly not dead two or three different ways.

I mean, it was--

it was bad enough to think that

she used the accident to make her--

her family believe she was dead, but...

that's the most angry, hurtful thing

anyone can do to her family.

Karen, you don't know that family.

Oh.

They weren't nice people, huh?

I guess that justifies what she did.

No, it doesn't.

I'm just saying we may not have all the reasons.

Well, here are two possible explanations.

Either she is Paige...

and Paige is a pathological liar,

or she's an imposter, and she doesn't know the way

that the real Paige died.

In either case...

she's a liar.

It's the Winstons' number.

[somber music playing]

[butler] Hello, Mr. Sumner.

Hi, I'm here to see Miss Winston.

-One moment, please, Mr. Sumner. -Thank you.

Well, hello there, Greg. How are you?

-Fine. -[Anne] Hello.

Now, where are you and Anne off to this evening?

Uh, bowling, sir.

I thought we'd head over to the Beaumont Lanes.

I see, uh, you're meeting friends there, huh?

[Greg] No, sir. It'll just be the two of us.

-Bye, Daddy. -Now, don't be in such a hurry to get rid of me, young lady.

[Russell chuckles]

I want to find out how Greg's mother's faring.

[Greg] Oh, she's fine, Mr. Winston, fine.

She's, uh-- And don't worry about Anne.

-She won't be out late. -She's not going out at all.

[Anne] Daddy, don't! Daddy!

That's exactly the kind of cheap trick

I expected of you, MacKenzie.

I expected better of you, Sumner.

I love Anne, Mr. Winston! And she loves me!

You get off my property before I have you arrested.

Mack! Oh, Daddy, please!

Oh, Daddy, please, I'm sorry!

[♪]

[door clicks open]

[door clicks closed]

[indistinct conversations]

-[Greg] Hi. -[Jean] Hi.

[Greg] Did you settle all your claims, uh, at the club?

When you said you wanted to get together,

you didn't say where.

I would have been just as happy to mail this.

Well, when it comes to serious dough,

I like to stay on top of things.

Oh, you don't trust me.

-You're a woman, right? -[laughs]

Just kidding.

-That beer looks good. -Have some.

It's great to see classy women

hanging around classy clubs drinking beer.

And seeking fun and adventure, right?

-Mm-hmm. -Single, I presume?

Maybe.

-And you? -I'm married.

What do you do in your spare time?

Now, don't start feeling guilty

before we've done anything to feel guilty about.

-That's a good point. -Want me to give you a reason?

You think this bartender knows how to make a zombie?

Bartender.

Two double zombies.

[mysterious music playing]

Damn them.

[♪]

Give me your purse.

-Did you follow me? -Give me your purse!

Leave me alone! I didn't do anything!

Give it to me, Olivia!

Did you think I didn't know?

Did you?

I'm not going to let this happen, Olivia.

I'm not going to let it happen to you.

[♪]

[Mack sighs]

[phone ringing]

Hello.

Mr. Winston, please.

This is he. Who's calling?

Mr. Winston, this is Patrick MacKenzie.

I'm calling from California.

-I used to-- -MacKenzie?

Oh, yes. I remember you.

You do? Good.

I told Anne that your wife called the other day.

She didn't understand it any more than I do.

I'm sorry. Anne?

Are you so bitter that you want to hurt Anne, Mr. MacKenzie?

Because that's what these phone calls are doing.
