08x26 - Our Secret

Post by bunniefuu »

I'll call her now.

No answer. She probably forgot about a breakfast date.

I don't want my daughter falling in love with you.

Can I help it if I'm charming?

Around my daughter, yes.

Now, nobody can know about this.

It'll be our secret.

-Anne! -[glass shattering]

[theme music playing]

[instruemntal music playing]

If you're breaking a breakfast date, you've got to call.

It wasn't a date. It was an appointment that I broke.

And I didn't-- I didn't--

It wasn't no date.

I hope you didn't break it because of me.

No. No, I didn't...

I didn't break it because of you. No.

No.

So you're gonna call.

I-- I'll call. Yeah, I'll call. I'll call later.

I'll call in a few minutes.

I'll call her.

I'll call her now.

[phone pad clicking]

[phone ringing]

[Mack] No answer.

She probably forgot about our breakfast date...

[chuckling]...anyway.

[orchestral waltz playing]

[music fades]

-You have all your homework? -Yeah.

Are you doing anything special this weekend?

Um... I might go to the movies with Aaron.

I've been thinking, You haven't invited any of your friends over

since we moved here.

Yeah, well...

You haven't invited any of your friends over either.

I don't have any friends.

[both chuckling]

But if you invite some of your friends over,

I'll get myself some friends.

Come on. We can have a party.

-I don't know. -Why not?

[sighs] Because the friends I used to have still do drugs.

Surely not all your friends do drugs.

Well, no.

But the ones that don't know I used to.

So they keep their distance.

I kind of have to start all over.

Well, maybe...

maybe Aaron could find you a date.

-Mom. -Well, there must be a special young man...

-Mom. -...out there somewhere for my little girl.

Isn't there anyone?

Olivia.

There is someone, isn't there?

Come on.

Well, there is a guy I like.

Well, good. Invite him over.

No.

He doesn't even know I'm alive.

Good. You're alive.

[Peter grunting]

How come you let me sleep so long?

Oh, I didn't have the heart to wake you.

You had the prettiest smile on your face.

It was angelic.

You must have been dreaming about Olivia.

Oh, come off it.

You know all I want from her is that letter.

Ah.

The precious letter.

What's in it, anyway?

I don't know. That's...

That's the problem.

Olivia is in love with you, Peter.

She'd do anything for you.

I don't think it's quite that simple.

Oh, it's not simple at all.

It's hard.

It's like playing the violin.

The melody's in there.

But it takes... skillful stroking...

to get it out.

[both chuckling]

You can't explain until you're blue in the face, Ben.

But I'm just not mechanically minded enough to work this thing.

And that's the beauty of this system.

You don't have to be mechanically minded.

You just have to learn to turn it on and off.

Okay, wait a minute, wait a minute.

Let me just see if I've got it right, okay?

-You watching, Mama? -Mm-hmm.

Now, when we come down the stairs at night

we turn off the electronic eye on the bottom step right here,

with this switch right there.

That's it. That's all there is to it.

And this will keep you from attacking me in the middle of the night?

-[Valene sighs] -I said I was sorry.

Mama, Ben thought you were an intruder, that's all.

In my bathrobe?

You tripped the security system.

Yes, I did, but I wouldn't have if you hadn't put it there.

I felt safer around here before you put that thing in the house.

Okay, but you will use it at night, right?

I'll just have to learn to not come down the stairs, I guess.

Not just at night. We have to use it during the daytime as well.

We do?

Just because it's daylight out

doesn't mean that there's no danger.

Oh, well, that does it, Ben Gibson.

I'm not listening to any more of this foolishness.

-Now, Lilimae, now listen-- -No.

Alright, alright, fine. Then don't listen to me.

I'll let you see it in operation.

See for yourselves.

-[phone ringing] -Ha! Speak of the devil.

-Hello? -Mack, yeah. Bud, I could use your help over here.

Hey, Benjamin Gibson!

What do you know? What do you say? What do you need?

A... burglar.

[Mack] A what?

A burglar. I just installed an alarm system in the house

and I want to show Val and Lilimae how well it works.

Oh. Oh.

That's what you need?

Let me check out the jail and see what they can spare.

Well, I actually thought maybe you could do it.

[Mack] Me?

[Ben] Yeah, well, uh,

your name just came to mind.

Ben, let me get you a pro.

Uh, no, actually, uh, you know,

one of the guys that you get might be a little bit too, uh...

Crazy.

How do you want me to do it?

You're the burglar.

[quirky music playing]

[doorbell ringing]

[doorbell ringing]

[doorbell ringing]

[dial tone ringing]

[elegant waltz playing]

[Lilimae] Tell me this is not crazy, Val.

We're waiting for our neighbor to break into our house?

Mama, it's just a demonstration, okay?

-Yeah. -Yeah.

Don't humor him, Val. Tell him it's crazy.

Okay, kids, now, we're gonna play a game.

In a few minutes, Mack is gonna come to the front door

and we're gonna hear this loud, loud noise.

It's gonna sound like...

-Beep, beep, beep, beep, beep. -[shushing]

Quiet.

Hmm.

What's Daddy doing?

What's Daddy doing?

Well, Daddy's playing a game.

[intense music playing]

[child chattering]

[whimsical instrumental]

A-ha! Get 'em up! Hey!

-There's Mack! -[all laugh]

[alarm beeping]

There! You hear it?

It works perfectly! Perfectly.

-Hey, come on, man-- -You owe me this one.

[laughing]

Could you please turn that off now that we know it works?

-Turn it off. -Alright!

-[alarm stops] -I gotta to use the phone.

-Good kids! -[phone ringing]

Gibsons.

Yeah, that was a false alarm.

Uh, my code word is "circus".

Thank you.

Mack, you've got to talk to Ben.

We're gonna be thrown out of this neighborhood.

Oh, right, Lilimae, right.

[dial tone ringing]

Busy.

Okay, bye-bye.

-Bye-bye. -Bye-bye!

-Bye! -You think you could look at the bedroom for me?

I mean, we have the ladder in the garage.

I should have my head examined for doing this one.

Thank you.

[kids chattering]

-[doorbell ringing] -[dial tone ringing]

[doorbell ringing]

[elegant waltz playing]

Anne? Anne!

Anne! Anne!

Anne!

[echoing] Anne! Anne! Anne!

[echoing] Anne! Anne! Anne!

[music continues]

[glass smashing]

Anne!

Come on, Anne.

I didn't realize how desperate she was.

[Mack clears his throat]

You know, I just said--

You know, I told her I didn't love her,

and that I wasn't gonna leave you.

[Karen sighs]

Don't.

Don't? Don't what?

Huh? Don't what? Don't blame myself?

[Mack sighs]

[indistinct announcements over PA]

Karen...

Don't blame myself?

The note says, "My dearest Mack."

It doesn't say "My dearest Karen," does it?

It says, "My dearest Mack."

[sighs]

[romantic instrumental]

Don't you like your dessert, honey?

Can I have hers if she doesn't want it?

Oh, Brian.

-[Abby chuckles] -[Olivia] No, he can have it.

I don't want dessert tonight, anyway.

You know, you didn't eat much of your dinner, either,

and you're looking kind of flushed.

-Do you feel alright? -Mother.

She feels okay to me.

She looks pretty good, too.

I think it's time for the two of you to go to bed.

But it's early.

Why do I have to go to bed? She's the one who's sick.

I'm not sick.

Enough, enough to bed, both of you.

Go on.

Brian, say good night to Senator Hollister.

Yeah, good night.

So long, champ.

Good night, Olivia.

Good night, Peter.

[music continues]

You've done real well by Olivia.

-I have? -Mm-hmm.

Helping me to get her on the Youth Advisory Council,

it gave her a focus, gave her something to concentrate on

while she was getting her act together.

I'm glad I could help.

I think she's got a little crush on you, though.

-No. -[Abby scoffs]

-Really? -I think so.

[Peter laughing]

[sighs]

Brian.

Brian!

Come here.

-Yeah? -How do I look?

That's Mom's robe.

[Olivia sighs] Does it make me look older?

-Older than what? -Why do I talk to you?

You're so immature.

Well?

-Well what? -How do I look, dummy?

Like my sister, stupid.

-Really, huh? -[Brian laughs]

Wait, stop!

Stop! Mercy! [laughing]

-Mercy! -[both laughing]

-Stop! -What's going on in here?

She started it.

She was trying on your stuff, and I said that she--

Oh, I can imagine what you said, and I don't think I wanna hear it.

Weren't you two supposed to be in bed a long time ago?

-Huh? -Uh-uh.

-[Brian mumbling] -Mumble, mumble.

[Abby mumbling and laughing]

I was going to go tell Peter good night.

He's already left, honey.

-Oh. -Turn around.

Oh, that looks so pretty on you.

You can keep it if you like.

-Thanks. -[Abby chuckles]

-Good night, honey. -Good night.

Someone better be in bed by the time I get there.

[instrumental music playing]

Mrs. Olivia Hollister.

Paige, where have you been? I've been leaving messages all over town.

Oh, I was running errands. Look, don't worry, Mack.

Mother will pull through.

She's much stronger than you think.

Mack said your mother was very upset last night.

I didn't see her. I spent the night with Olivia.

Mother was all for it. She, uh, wanted to be alone.

You see? She's sending out signals to everyone,

all over the place, and nobody picked up on it.

Nobody noticed.

I'm gonna find a doctor.

Oh. [Paige sighs]

Look, I'm really tired.

Would you tell Mack I went home?

Oh, alright.

I'll-- I'll call you.

Paige.

Don't blame yourself.

Blame?

Oh, Karen, please.

Mother is a pro at exhibitions like this.

Really.

You don't think she intended to die, do you?

Is there a phone around here?

[indistinct announcement over PA]

Listen, I'll, uh, I'll call you later.

[announcer] Dr. George Ungar to the delivery room, stat.

Dr. George Ungar to delivery, stat.

Are we on for tonight?

I'm sorry, I can't make it tonight.

Some-- some business has come up.

Peter, I've been through emotional hell today.

I can imagine.

I know how close you are to your mother.

Almost as close as you are to yours.

Speaking of which, have you got the letter yet?

I'm working on it.

Is that the business that came up? Olivia?

Or-- or is it her mother?

Business is business.

I'll call you tomorrow.

[music continues]

[indistinct announcement over PA]

[music continues]

[Karen] Have you known Anne long?

[Ben] Well, enough to feel partly responsible.

I was running late this morning.

-If I would have been on time-- -On time?

We were going shopping for ski clothes.

We were going on a vacation for a couple of weeks.

Then...

she was expecting you.

I was supposed to be there about 9:00.

[Mack] Doc?

-How is she? -Her prognosis is good.

I want to watch her for 24 hours

and, uh, she'll be right out.

They're taking her to her private room now.

Oh, good. Can I talk to her?

Sure, Mack, but she's weak.

Right.

[door creaking]

Anne?

Anne, it's Mack.

You're gonna be okay.

I promise.

[announcer over PA] Dr. Petersen, OR II.

Dr. Petersen, OR II.

[instrumental music playing]

Oh.

-[alarm system beeps] -[switch clicks]

He turns getting a cup of tea into an adventure.

[gasps] What a guy.

[soft knocking]

[music fades]

Don't tell me.

She rallied and will survive.

Good for her.

Paige.

Your mother tried to k*ll herself.

She almost died, maybe, from carelessness.

But k*ll herself?

I don't think so.

You haven't given her a chance since she got here.

[sighs deeply]

You've tried to hurt her every way you can.

-She may not be the perfect mother-- -Amen.

She may not be the perfect mother,

but she's been trying

ever since she found out that you've been here, alive.

She's been here by your side-- by your side to patch things up.

By my side? Get serious.

Whose name was on that suicide note?

And don't tell me she hadn't made plans with you today.

A lunch or something.

Breakfast.

Oh, you were supposed to have breakfast with her.

Well, I was supposed to go by the house to drop off a jacket,

which she had to have this morning.

Well, don't you understand? I was your backup.

If you didn't show up, I would have.

This is ridiculous.

Your mother didn't take two pills to relax.

She took a whole bottle full.

And no one says they're gonna point a g*n to their head

and pull the trigger and miss their brain.

Oh, don't be so shocked.

How do you think I ever came up with the idea

of faking my own death?

[tense music playing]

Oh. Where is my mind?

[instrumental music playing]

What is it gonna take?

Somebody tell me

what it's gonna take for you people to take me seriously?

Does somebody have to come in here in the middle of the night

and slit your throats or kidnap our children?

Do I have to stay awake all night to keep you people alive?

-Ben, you're scaring me. -[shouting] I hope so!

God, I hope so!

[music continues playing]

Right.

Room 213.

Right.

Dozen yellow roses, thank you.

[Mack sighs deeply]

Oh, come on. It's just flowers.

-I didn't say anything. -What am I supposed to do?

-I didn't say anything. -The woman's in the hospital.

She almost died.

And no one can prove that she arranged to be saved, Karen.

And isn't it better that she was, huh?

Because otherwise, Anne would be dead.

Karen, look.

What if she did stage it all just to get my attention?

That's just as crazy as doing it. It's a cry for help.

And if I ignore it, the next time could be worse.

But if I don't ignore it and try to help her...

then I could be making matters worse by leading her on.

Don't say anything.

[Mack sighs] You're right.

It's a no-win situation.

[heels clacking]

[indistinct announcement over PA]

Near death becomes you, Mother.

Paige.

It's so sweet of you to come visit me in the hospital.

Oh, we always went backstage to tell the performers

how well they did.

And, Mother...

this is your best performance.

Congratulations.

Oh. Thank you.

Have you seen Mack?

I saw Karen.

And she knows that you also asked me to stop by the house.

You don't really expect to get away with this, do you?

Oh, look, flowers.

The envelope, please.

Oh, look.

They're for Mack.

[elegant waltz playing]

Wasn't that sweet of him?

[street din]

[Michael] Olivia!

-Hi. -Hi.

Hey, you look great.

About that, um, the youth council meeting...

You don't have to come.

I only sent an invitation to be polite.

Oh, no, I think this is terrific,

what you're doing with the anti-drug council.

You really don't have to come.

Yeah, well, it's just that well, you know,

I don't really do drugs.

Michael, if you go to that meeting,

I'll throw you out.

I don't want you to go.

You'd cramp my style.

Oh. [chuckles] What's that supposed to mean?

Nothing.

Ah, okay.

So who's the guy?

-No one. -No, come on.

What, is he on the council?

No, he's not on the council.

Uh, I work with him.

Peter Hollister?

Don't tell one person.

Olivia!

He-- [chuckles softly]

He's pretty old for you.

He doesn't think so.

You mean he knows how you feel?

No.

I've only told you and Paige.

Paige?

But Paige has... has been seeing Peter Hollister.

-That's not true. -Are you sure?

Well, of course.

She would tell me.

She's my best friend.

[instrumental music playing]

I'm not moving until you say yes.

I can't have you sitting here all day. I'm swamped.

I've got my own work,

and I've got Max to take care of, too.

Peggy!

Just say you'll go with me on a honeymoon, that's all.

-I'll go. -See? Peggy will go.

Oh, great. So now I'm in competition with Peggy.

And, uh, Abby and Val

and Olivia and Betsy and Bobby and...

Have I left anyone out?

Look... those are the people that are in my life,

and there's not a damn thing I can do about it,

but they're not going with us.

Now, we need this time together.

-[knocks] -Come in.

-Hi.

Oh, hi. You're early.

Yeah, well, you said we were going to dinner at the club,

whenever food is involved...

Well, Mack isn't here yet,

and I haven't seen Paige.

She's probably at the hospital with her mother.

No, I doubt that, unless Peter Hollister's there.

Peter Hollister?

Yeah, you didn't know?

They've been seeing each other.

I guess he likes younger women.

She's not that young, honey.

Well, maybe not, but Olivia's even younger,

and she really likes him.

What do you mean, "she really likes him?"

Well, I guess she loves him.

And she says he likes her, too.

Why would she say that?

I don't know.

But I wouldn't put much past him.

[suspenseful music playing]

[over phone] Hi, Peter. It's Olivia.

I-- I was wondering if you'd heard from your mother.

You said you were worried, so I was wondering, you know.

Um, you can call me at home anytime.

-Bye. -Anytime.

[laughs] Oh, Abby would love that.

-[Paige laughing] -Hey.

[answering machine beeps]

Hi. It's Olivia again.

[Paige] And again and again and again.

Well, there's an anti-drug commission meeting next week,

and the youth council members are supposed to be there.

I was thinking maybe we could go together.

[Peter giggling]

So let me know. Call anytime.

Bye.

Oh, my dear.

She is ready and tuned.

-[Peter laughs] -All you have to do is pluck.

-Ouch! -[phone ringing]

[automated voice] This is Peter Hollister. I'm not here right now,

so please leave a message at the tone.

[Greg] Listen, if I were you, I'd get back to me

quicker than as soon as you can.

I got some bad news for you.

Or it could be good news, depending on how you look at it.

Your mother died today.

I'm here. What happened?

The doctors say she hit her head.

She drowned in a bathtub.

[Peter] An accident?

I don't know, you tell me.

Very funny.

The body's arriving at the airport by private plane.

You have to pick it up.

Can you keep this out of the papers for a couple of days?

I don't like the sound of this, Peter.

I promised her I'd do a few things for her

if this ever happened.

If she fell in a bathtub?

If she died suddenly.

Okay, you do what you have to do.

By the way, you have my condolences.

What happened?

I've got to get that letter.

Now.

Time for your performance, maestro.

-[knocking on door] -[door latch clicks]

-Abby? -Karen.

Isn't it enough that I agree to do the promotion?

I don't have to like it, do I?

-No. -Good.

-You don't. Abby? -[Abby sighs deeply]

Olivia's doing real well, isn't she?

Yeah, I'm real proud of her.

Yeah. Me too.

I was very impressed with the way you handled everything.

-Thank you. -Um.

You know, she's still recovering

and it's really very tough for her.

Karen, cut to the chase, okay?

I think Olivia has...

strong feelings for Peter Hollister.

That's what this is all about?

Teenager has crush on older man.

Call the police.

Look, ordinarily it wouldn't be so important.

But Olivia is still recovering.

Peter has helped Olivia a lot, Karen.

I mean, I can't believe you.

-[Abby scoffs] -Abby.

You know how close Diana and I once were.

You watch your little girl growing up

and you always see the little girl,

never the woman developing inside until...

one day you turn around and you feel something changing.

Or I should say that...

it's already changed behind your back.

It's really frightening.

Mothers and daughters...

keep going at each other the way mothers and daughters do.

But it's all out of whack because

while you're fighting mother to daughter,

she's fighting woman to woman.

Which is really what the fight is all about. Not...

Not the issue that started it.

Abby, I'm a good mother too.

But I made the classic mistake

of underestimating

the woman in Diana

and her feelings.

I'm not sure we completely fixed the damage that was done.

You and Olivia have gone so far, you're so close.

It would be a...

shame to throw away...

Well, I mean, if you underestimate her feelings.

Look, I ma-- I may be out of line,

but I'm making too much of this,

but I'm really worried about Olivia.

-She's so vulnerable. -Karen.

You're right. [chuckles softly]

But...

you are out of line.

[door click close]

[birds chirping]

[Gary] Thank you.

Why don't you get the luggage and we'll meet you around front.

-Yes, sir. -Charter Terminal?

Yeah. I hired a plane.

I told you we'd be alone.

You know, you make it real hard not to love you.

Well, it comes naturally.

[both chuckling]

It'll be a few more minutes, Senator.

Alright. Thanks.

-Hello. -Hi.

You going somewhere?

No, just...

picking up a few things.

What about you?

We're taking a pre-wedding trip.

-Set the date? -No.

Well, I wish you all the very best.

Senator Hollister,

if you could just sign here, sir.

They're bringing the remains to the front of the terminal.

Thank you very much.

I'm very sorry about your mother, sir.

[Peter] Thank you.

Your mother, I'm-- I'm sorry.

I'm sorry.

Thank you.

Good luck.

[tense music playing]

Let's go, okay?

Jill, your mother's died.

Look, Gary, let's just get on the plane, alright?

-Peter needs you. -Peter doesn't need anybody.

-Trust me. -It's your family.

Gary, you're all the family I want or need.

Let's just get on the plane, okay?

We can't. Your mother's just died.

I-- you can't just pretend like nothing's happened.

[instrumental music playing]

[Peter] It can't be that serious.

If I say it's serious, Peter, it's serious.

[chuckles] I don't want my daughter falling in love with you.

Can I help it if I'm charming?

Around my daughter, yes, you can.

What about around her mother?

Peter, just watch what you say and do

around Olivia, alright?

You want me to drop her from the youth council?

No, just don't--

Just don't encourage her.

Well, I'll do my best to be a bear.

It's not a joke, Peter.

It's really not. Is this--

Is this some kind of ego thing with you?

What?

You're not just stringing her along

because you're flattered by a schoolgirl crush.

-Come on. -Because if you are--

Abby, I swear to you, I never noticed Olivia's crush.

And I assure you, I won't do anything to encourage her.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got to make a meeting.

I'm really glad you called. What's wrong?

I haven't heard from my mom yet.

I'm starting to worry.

You still haven't heard anything?

No.

I'm beginning to think something might be the matter.

I just wish she'd call and write a letter explaining everything.

Um, I have something for you.

You do?

[Olivia sighs]

It's not much.

Oh.

Oh.

You shouldn't have done this.

I wanted to.

Hey. I have something for you, too.

[chuckles]

Look on the inside.

[music continues]

"To O.C. from P.H.

With love."

Now, nobody can know about this.

Not Paige, not your mom, nobody.

No one.

It'll be our secret.

[elegant waltz playing]

[music continues]

[music fades]

[elegant waltz playing]
