-Hello. -Abby?

- Yes. -I spoke to Harold.

He's leaving town tonight.

-Good. - Sorry. This got out of hand.

Just so long it's over.

It's not over.

You can't leave.

Manny said I got to go, so I gotta go.

Stay here. You can get another job.

I can't. You heard what he said.

Your uncle doesn't even care.

It's my mother who's making him do this.

-I'll talk to her. -No.

I can get her to change her mind.

No.

If your mother talks to my uncle...

I'm a dead man.

If you leave...

I might as well be dead.

[somber music]

[sighs] I gotta go.

[door opens and closes]

Phew! What a shot.

Mom, can we go to a Lakers game?

Hmm?

Lakers? Sure.

Brian, I, uh...

I need to talk to your sister alone.

Would you go upstairs?

-Why? -Just do it, Brian. Please.

[sighs]

-[indistinct] -[keys jangling]

Olivia...

I, uh...

-I spoke to Harold's uncle. -You did?

He told me that Harold had taken a job in another city.

I'm sorry.

I think I'm gonna go upstairs and lie down.

Are you alright?

[sighs] Yeah.

Thanks. Thanks a lot for all your help.

Good, boy. What amazing helper, yeah.

Alright, put the animal cr*cker down.

Nothing till after dinner.

Go on upstairs, both of you.

I want you to get all washed up

and I'll have your dinner ready

faster than you can say Jackie Robinson.

Would you folks like a drink before dinner?

Um, yes, please. I'll have a mineral water.

Offering a drink to an alcoholic,

it's like offering a cigarette

to somebody who's got lung cancer.

I'm sorry. I realize how childish that--

And manipulative.

And manipulative.

I'm sorry. I said I'm sorry.

I don't know what else to say.

Do you wanna give us another chance?

Yeah. Yeah, I do.

I also apologized to Val.

I tried to make peace. You know, a truce,

Yeah, I know. She told me.

She also told me she got another letter from Ben.

Uh, it just doesn't make sense.

All these months she hasn't heard from him

and then all of a sudden she gets two letters...

Maybe we should just be happy for her.

Well, I am.

Good.

What I don't understand is she gets two letters

out of the blue without any explanation of

where he's been, what's happened

or when he's comin' back.

-Maybe he can't say. -What?

Are you trying to tell me he can't find a phone that works?

Can we order?

Gary, this is the first time in a long time

that we've been out together.

And I would rather talk about the weather

than the perils of Valene.

The temperature's about 62 degrees out.

Wind's out on the north-west.

Uh, you didn't eat much.

You know, I thought you're saving room for dessert. Here.

You eat it.

And you can tell mom that I'm fine.

She doesn't have to send you up to check on me.

Uh, she didn't send me up here. It was my idea.

Oh, come on. She's always checking up on me.

She doesn't follow you around.

She doesn't watch every move you make.

She probably still thinks I'm on drugs.

Well, she doesn't.

She's only doing what she thinks a mom's supposed to do.

You're only siding with her because she leaves you alone.

You can get away form her.

I never will.

Never.

I think you're just making yourself crazy.

is gone.

-Mind if I join you? -Please.

How's the job hunting going?

I'm now becoming an expert at filling out job applications.

Yeah.

You know, come to think of it, I can use some help.

-Like freelance. -Freelance?

Yeah. Doing a little investigation.

-I'm not an investigator. -I didn't say you were.

There's this guy I'm a little suspicious about.

I just wanna check it out.

Is this some kind of joke?

Well, I could be wrong,

but this guy is squeaky clean.

Too clean to be clean, you know what I'm sayin'?

You know, he wears these million-dollar suits.

Oh, he's got money!

Yeah, but where does it come from?

I just wanna see if he is who he says he is, you know?

Where he's lived before, what business he's been,

who his friends are,

what he's had for breakfast, are there raisins in his cereal,

-does he wear dirty socks-- -Mack...

I'm not a detective!

I am not a cop!

Fine, fine. I know. Fine.

I just need someone who...thinks like a cop.

-I got a job! -[Patricia laughs]

Oh, honey!

That's great. That's good.

-What kinda job? -Well...

it's the kinda job I can do with my eyes closed.

What kinda job?

I don't know. if it's caution to tell.

-I will k*ll you. -[chuckles]

Mack hired me to check out something for him.

Something?

Someone.

Job. My kinda job. [laughs]

[doorbell rings]

-Hello. -May I come in?

Sure.

Olivia came to see me this evening.

She did?

She wanted me to give Harold a letter.

Did you read it?

Thought I'd let you make that choice.

[sighs]

[intense music]

[Olivia] Dear Harold.

I've never loved anyone like I loved you.

I thought we would be together forever.

I realized that's impossible.

But I want you know that I am thinking of you at the end.

Thank you for loving me.

Olivia.

Oh, God.

-Next on Knots Landing... -Kid sent you a suicide note.

-What? -You know what she'd do ?

Where she is, anything?

I think she's too smart to go through with it.

Do you?

Very funny, very cute!

Business at Lotus Point finally

is turning around a little bit,

and you want to arrest the guy

who's responsible for it!

I just wanna find out what his business really is!

His people deal in enough cash

to go into branch, Mack.

It's all a front.

Coke.

[sighs]

[theme music playing]
