Rick Hawkins wasn't at his office.
He wasn't at home. Something has happened to him.
I know it has.
What do you think Grandpa Greg is going to say

have been doing behind his back?
He better not find it out from you.
Why was she fired?
I don't think Abby took kindly the fact
that her husband's mistress was on the payroll.

because I won't test that sort of thing.
-[yelling] Mack, don't! -I won't.
[yelling] Stop it!
[Paige grunts]
[theme music]
I didn't sleep last night. Do you know what kept me awake?
Something just didn't sit right with me.
Something doesn't ring true about the Murakami situation
and I wanted to see your face while you denied being involved.
Somehow, someway.
I don't know exactly how
but I know as sure as I'm standing here
that you and Greg are involved with Murakami
and Ted Melcher is simply a front.
[scoffs] Ted Melcher?
What does Ted Melcher have to do with this?
You expect me to believe that Ted Melcher owns Murakami
and you never knew it?
Ted Melcher owns Murakami?
[female voice] Yes?
Have Ted Melcher come in here right away.
Yes, Mrs. Sumner.
Mrs. MacKenzie. What's so important?
Mrs. Mackenzie tells me that you own
the Murakami Corporation.
Is that true?
Yes, as a matter of fact, it is.
[scoffs] You mean you bought Lotus Point from us?
-Yes, I did. -Well, Ted.
That's the most duplicitous thing
I've ever heard.
I have never misrepresented myself
or my company.
Everything I've done has been perfectly legal.
[sighs]
Don't think for a minute
I believe one word of this ridiculous charade.
[dramatic music]
I thought we were very convincing.
[knocks on door] Rick?
Rick, have you changed your mind about helping...
Rick Hawkins doesn't work for Murakami anymore.
I fired him.
Perhaps I can help you with something.
You hypocrite.
You pretended not to know Nagata
and then pretended you knew nothing about Murakami
and then you said you did PR work for them.
I did not know who Nagata was before I hired him.
I had no idea what Murakami was before I bought the company.
And yes, I did do publicity for them.
I can't tell you every small detail.
Maybe you don't know it, or maybe you enjoy it
but Abby's got you wrapped around her little finger.
-Jealous, are we? -Oh, please.
The truth hurts.
The truth is that you and Abby are in this together.
And everyone who knows you too, knows it.
It must be a great burden being so sure of yourself.
"I want Abby," you said.
You didn't have the hots for Abby.
You had the hots for her money.
It all makes sense to me now.
Now? Now that you've been fired?
Now that Grandpa Greg has left you out in the cold?
What do you think Grandpa Greg is gonna say
when he finds out what you and Abby
have been doing behind his back?
He better not find it out from you.
Oh, is that another threat?
Call it advice.

I didn't want you to be embarrassed.
-Embarrassed? -Not you.
Not the administration.
You're gonna tell me your husband
used to be a communist?
I'm going to tell you that Greg has been imprudent.
And I wanted you to know before the media
or the FBI got wind of it.
I'm all ears.
[Abby] You won't tell him I called?
You keep me guessing like this, and I surely will.
I found out that Greg's top publicist
a man by the name of Ted Melcher
owns a company called Murakami.
A company that wants to--
To drill for oil in a sensitive ecological zone.
[chuckles] You know, some people consider
the whole damn state of California to be sensitive.
Well...
Greg will want to distance himself from Ted.
Yes.
If, of course, it's not too late.
Just what I needed to tie
to some little weasel drilling for oil
and pretending to be a Japanese company.
That ought to go down great on both sides of the Pacific.
I'm sorry, honey.
I just thought you should be the first to know.
I don't feel like the first to know.
[Abby] I know, I was as shocked as you are.
But I wanted you to be ready
in case the media got a hold of it.
-We'll have to fire him. -[Abby] I'll take care of that.
Is there any good news?
Tell me you'll be home for Olivia's party on Saturday.
I'll be home for Olivia's party on Saturday.
That's good news.
You know, this Ted Melcher thing,
this could blow us right out of the water.
Why?
Well, if I deny I knew what was going on,
it looked like I was duped, which I was.
If I pretend I did know
it's gonna look like I was an accomplice.
Don't worry. We'll survive this.
[instrumental music]

I'm really grateful to you for letting me stay here.
Well, no one's using Paige's room anyway.
Which reminds me
you shouldn't have written off Paige so quickly.
-I didn't write her off. -You wrote off her suspicions.
Mack, Murakami is a shady company.
Of the three people we know connected with it
one is missing and one is dead.
It is odd.
You know, you people are concocting
this incredible plot because you hate this company.
Large corporations are not inherently evil.
People do take vacations.
People do die in car accidents, unfortunately.
I don't believe it.
The Mack MacKenzie I married would be suspicious
of anything involving Abby.
Since when is Abby involved in this?
Ted Melcher works for her.
I can't tell you how sad I am to accept your resignation.
-We all are. -I'm gonna miss you guys too.
Are you sure I can't talk you into staying?
Try a large raise. It always works with me.
[Bob laughs]
Ted, just remember.
If you ever change your mind, the door is always open here.
Working for you has been one of the most extraordinary
rewarding experiences of my professional career.
Thank you.
You're welcome. I'll keep in touch.
Don't be a stranger.
So, Ted, do you know who's gonna get your office?
In any large company
even in the government where you reside
the head honcho doesn't always know
what the little honchos are up to.
Sometimes, that's for the sake of deniability.
You'd bet.
But sometimes it's because nobody bothers
to tell the head honcho what's going on.
Are you alluding to recent government scandals
or do you have one of your own...
Well, not a scandal but the appearance
of a conflict of interest.
Someone in my company owns a company
that is involved in a controversial
oil exploration project.
Murakami?
Well, if you know the company
then you know why I fired the employee.
I want you to know
that I had no prior knowledge of his involvement.
That the Sumner Group is in no way
shape or form involved with Murakami.
Is this plausible deniability?
You'd bet. Honest ignorance is what it is.
At least if you are appointed
you know what to say, if ever you need to say it.
I wanted you to have a new dress for the party.
I have a new one.
Well, why don't you try these on?
You might like them better.
Mother, I wanna wear this dress.
Olivia, that dress looks like--

That slime bucket you work for. Was he sneaking in the back?
Mr. MacKenzie, please.
[telephone ringing]
-You better go home now. -Do you believe me?
-Listen, go home. -[yelling] No.
Yes.
Lord, this house is crazy.
What do you want me to tell Abby?
You're out here with her husband.
I'm sorry. That's no--
[yelling] I don't care what you tell her.
Come on.
Mack, don't!
[shouting] No! Stop it!
I hate you.
I hate you both.
[dramatic music]
I should have taken a later flight.
-Let's go. -Paige just ran by.
-Yeah, let's go. -Mrs. MacKenzie?
There's a phone call for you, Mrs. MacKenzie.
Well, take a message.
-Who is this? -It's a reporter.
-Take a message. -Another moment won't hurt.
[groans]
[music continues]
Do you believe it? Do you believe...
-Olivia got married. -To who? The criminal?
Yes, and she didn't even tell me.
Well, the apple never falls far from the tree.
What's that supposed to mean?
That means that the apple never falls far from the tree.
What about Melcher? How did he take being fired?
Who cares? What happened to you?
This is Karen MacKenzie.
Yeah, this is Marjorie Stahl at The Chronicle.
I was wondering if you had any comment on the allegations
that one of your former business partners
defrauded you.
What allegations?
Well, our sources indicate that an Abby Sumner
back then Abby Ewing, is in fact the owner
of the Murakami Corporation which bought out Lotus Point.
Do you have any comment?
[dramatic music]
I knew it. I knew it.
-What? -You own Murakami.
-Ted Melcher owns Murakami. -Abby owns Murakami.
She has all along.
She defrauded me, she defrauded Gary
and she is going to jail.
[music continues]
[narrator] Next on Knots Landing...
We didn't get married. We made a business deal.
Fine. We made a business deal.
Now, our business deals are off.
If we could get the land back, then we could stop the drilling.
It's criminal fraud, Karen. She's facing five to ten years.
I don't have much of a career after all that's happened.
I feel like there's not much to lose
which means I could be dangerous.
Let's not get overly sentimental, shall we?
[eerie music]
I would have done anything for you.
[theme music]
