because you don't want to end up with your design

[Jay] People are gonna start getting more

I don't understand why Kara Saun had to see that.

Austin could have done a better job with leadership.

Eight of you are left.

One designer will be cut

every week until three remain.

Those three will show their line

at Olympus Fashion Week.

Then one winner will be chosen.

The winner will receive a spread in Elle magazine,

a mentorship with Banana Republic design team,

and a hundred thousand dollars to start their own line.

[upbeat music playing]

-Nora. -Yeah.

If she went shopping,

she could probably find this dress.

You're in, Austin.

That means, Nora, you're out.

This is a search for the next big fashion designer.

[Jay] This is cutthroat business.

[Kara] The competition was fierce.

[Heidi] Twelve contestants, three finalists,

and one winner.

Three designers will make their runway debut

at Olympus Fashion Week.

[Alexandra] I plan to make it to fashion week.

[Robert] I think I'll be number one.

And the winner of Project Runway

will receive everything they need to start their own label.

[woman] I think I deserve to win.

People are gonna start getting pretty bitchy.

Oh, my.

For these 12 contestants,

Project Runway is a chance of a lifetime.

[upbeat music playing]

[Kevin] I was sad to see Nora go home.

She's a great designer

and I hated to have a spat with her

in front of everybody.

[Nora] If you had to make that garment

by yourself yesterday and--

I could have done it faster without you.

-Oh. That's how it is. -[Kevin] Yeah.

Nora is extremely talented.

And I think by Nora leaving,

a lot of people are now like,

"Okay. This is-- this is possible.

This is obtainable."

Welcome back to the runway.

You have lost five

and there are now only seven of you left.

Let's call this week's challenge,

Making a Splash.

No.

[Heidi] You will design a swimsuit,

sleek and glamorous enough

to navigate the waters

of an exclusive fashion industry party.

You only have five hours to complete your swimsuits.

So be daring

and use your time wisely.

Let's bring out the models.

[intense music playing]

Models, it is just as important

for you guys as it is for the designers

for you to stay on this competition.

There's an exclusive fashion spread in Elle magazine

on the line for the final model.

There are now seven designers

and eight models on the runway.

You know that choosing the right model

is crucial to surviving on the show.

I will draw your names out of this bag

and you will select in this order.

The last model on the runway will be out.

Kara Saun, you won the last challenge.

You get to choose first.

Jenny, thank you so much.

You did a wonderful job.

And since this is a bikini competition,

I think I'm gonna have you again.

Morgan still scares me a little,

but it's worth it, and, um,

it's worth a gamble, I think.

There are two models left on the stage,

Julia and Joy.

The model that you choose will be in,

[Jay] I've never worked with Joy before,

but, um, I like Julia's spunk,

so we're gonna go with her.

[Julia] I wish I'd stop crying.

-[Heidi] That means you're out. -Okay.

I really wanted to stay because I've really

made some good friends.

I kind of felt like I was leaving summer camp.

[Tim] All right, everyone. Here we are at Mood.

You have 30 minutes and $75 each

to create a swimsuit

that can double as evening wear.

[upbeat music playing]

I have one that caught my eye

-so much, that I haven't-- -Where is it?

It was kind of like a Missoni-ish look.

[Tim] Oh, yeah.

That's Missoni, all right.

Okay. So let's get four yards, please.

I love all the old like Esther Williams movies.

That sort of just, like, glamor, bathing,

beauty, ideal,

I think will be sort of echoed in my design.

I am really flying blind here.

I don't know anything

about bathing suit construction,

but I understand that I gotta have a clue

'cause it's gotta be done by 5:00.

Are they me?

[man] Oh, boy.

Here we go to making a bathing suit,

in minus four...

[men] Three, two, one.

[Kara] There's never a lot of time for these challenges,

but this particular one,

there's no time to complete this challenge.

And I just--you know, I'm wondering

how everybody's gonna make out.

[Robert] It's time to make the bathing suit.

[Jay] I just wanted to make something strappy.

I remember something from somewhere

that had straps on it.

So I kind of wanted like a lot of them.

So I got these little rings to hold the top together.

[funky music playing]

[Kara] This is a swimsuit for a society girl.

It's like a cream color.

It has two pieces to it.

The coverup, you know, you can just wear there.

And then the bathing suit you,

can wear in the water if you want to.

It's very sexy, very elegant, very rich.

I think the three strongest designers at this point

in the competition are me,

Austin, and Kara Saun.

Since I'm from Miami,

bikinis and bathing suits,

it's like a big thing over there.

So this should be a fun project for me.

I'm doing kind of like a Missoni-inspired

meets like Celine, you know, how Michael Kors did that

bathing suit with all the gold.

That's like my inspiration.

How is everyone?

Uh, we don't have enough time for sure, but--

You don't have enough time?

But we can probably do whatever we can.

[Tim] You need to make it work by 5:00 tonight.

[Kara] On this one, we were given no time,

and so I think people were kind of going a little crazy,

screaming at the sewing machines, it's not gonna help.

[screams]

Ugh. My--I was having such trauma

at the machines...

And I was cursing at them.

You know, you're a fat [bleep].

-[Kevin] Jay. -What?

[Kevin] Cool. Just chill. We have time.

-[Jay] No, it's not cool. -Come on.

[Jay] Yeah, I'm 10 hours behind

and it [bleep] looks like a g*y man's S&M costume.

I went to, like, five machines and they all sucked a*s.

You fat [bleep]!

I swear to God, these machines.

Uh, today's not the day

for these things had to... be happening to me.

Please, please, please, please.

Please work for me, please.

I just don't know how everybody else

seems to have the perfect [bleep] machine

and my thread keeps breaking.

I just felt like I could not get it done

and there was such a time constraint.

So then I was like, "Oh, no, I'm starting to freak out."

And then the time ticking,

I really thought, "Okay, I'm out,

I'm out of this show."

[Heidi] Coming up on Project Runway.

I think something's gonna happen at 5:00.

You're going to a party

and an additional challenge that you had.

[Robert] There's always a twist.

Somehow there's always a twist to these challenges.

[upbeat music playing]

[Austin] For the sixth challenge,

the key word is a little outfit

to "Make a Splash" at a fashion party.

So, obviously, you know, bathing suit.

We all went into this knowing it would be a challenge.

There's just so many types of bathing suits,

but I definitely wanted something

that was a little bit evening wear,

but still I really thought it was important

that it ought to be a functioning bathing suit.

[Wendy] This is the shortest amount of time

we have had to execute a challenge.

[Kevin] The design is Avant-garde classic.

It's got like a tuxedo, one-piece swimsuit

with, like, um, kinda, scuba-esque miniskirt

covering their bottom.

The key is to, like, just keep telling yourself

that it's gonna be incredible.

As long as you keep your head--

keep having your voice saying that you're gonna kick a*s,

then you'll be able to pull it off with no mistakes.

[Jay] I went out and had a cigarette and I was like,

"By the end of my cigarette and coming back

in the elevator, I knew exactly what I had to do."

So, yeah, my cigarette's my savior.

They should call them a pack of "Saviors."

[upbeat music playing]

-Austin. -[Austin] Yes.

-[Tim] Wendy, Alexandra, Kevin. -[Kevin] Yes.

Fifteen minutes.

Then I'll be back and we'll have to stop.

[upbeat music playing]

[Kara] I was gonna dye it.

But something's telling me, "Do not dye this piece."

I'm serious.

I think something's gonna happen at 5:00.

We knew something else was coming,

'cause we knew we had to be finished by 5:00.

So we're like, "Oh, my God, what is it?

Are we going to a pool party?" We didn't know.

[Robert] There's always a twist.

Somehow there's always a twist to these challenges.

[Tim] Okay, everybody.

Stop what you're doing.

This challenge was to design a swimsuit,

glamorous enough, sleek and sexy enough

to navigate a fashion industry party.

And as many of you may have already guessed,

you're going to a party at Hiro c*ck Lounge

at the Maritime Hotel hosted by Elle magazine.

Very exciting.

Wow.That'll work.

An important part about being a fashion designer

is getting your name in the press.

Richard Johnson who is the editor of Page Six

of the New York Post is going to be

in attendance at tonight's event.

And an additional challenge that you have

is to get his attention.

[woman chuckles]

[Kevin] At first, when I heard it was Richard Johnson,

I was kinda excited, because I know

everybody reads Page Six, like, the column to read

for celebrity and urban gossip.

So he is going to be evaluating your performance

in a social setting.

And the winner will be the designer

who gets his or her name printed in Richard Johnson's column.

That person will have immunity next week.

The rest of you will be judged on the runway.

So make certain that you and your models

are the celebrities tonight.

Your models are going to be in momentarily,

and need to go to the L'Oreal Paris hair and makeup rooms

to get prepped.

-[Kevin] There. -Hey, mama.

-[Kevin] Look, look. Go look. -Okay, okay.

[sighs] Oh, my God, it fits!

I was so happy that I had her,

'cause she's--I think she's a great designer.

-[model purring] -It's so... And I like the top.

Luckily, I chose Melissa who--um, you know,

who's very comfortable with her body,

and she's also a very, you know,

effervescent personality that would be well-suited

to, uh, you know, sort of working a party.

[speaking foreign language]

[Robert] Press is extremely important to a designer.

It's like a free advertisement for a designer

to get his name out.

[Austin] If your name's out there,

it's gonna cause attention.

People will want a piece of that.

[Wendy] Martinique is my model.

I looked at her and I saw her as this kind of

like Bird of Paradise.

And so I wanted to give her these really bright colors.

It's a sheered one-piece suit.

Now, sweetie. Please, don't be irritated with me.

I've never made a thong in my life.

I don't even know how to make a thong.

So just bear with me, will you?

I don't even know what I'm doing.

[Martinique]

My model said, "Oh, she'd rather wear her own thong."

[Alexandra] Okay, turn around.

It's so small. Is it...

I fitted the bathing suit on Erin

and it was a bit too small.

Her behind was showing a little bit.

Look in the mirror.

-The a*s is-- -Have you ever worn a bikini

-that small or no? -Uh-uh.

-No? Oh. -No.

I was a bit concerned, and it was tiny,

and she seemed a little bit uncomfortable

when she put on the bathing suit.

So I was getting a little bit nervous,

you know, about the party.

It's gonna be pretty rigged on your body,

so just be prepared.

[Julia] I'm glad I shaved my bikini line.

Jay's?

My tushie is coming out.

Okay. Here's your skirt.

Here, take it and then, uh, don't lose it.

What would you do if I lost it?

[upbeat music playing]

I didn't really get Kevin's bathing suit idea.

I mean, it looked like-- I don't know,

not like a bathing suit.

If she has a skirt on,

it looks just like a button-down and a skirt.

Also Wendy's, I don't think it's really a swimsuit at all.

Sort of like a mini dress.

I don't think she has what it takes.

More often than not, she ends up making a mess.

-[burps] -Oh, no.

Morgan, she's my trump card.

As long as she doesn't get drunk and, like,

falls on the floor or something.

Or maybe that will make the press.

[Heidi] Coming up on Project Runway.

[Jay] Model from hell,

Morgan conquers and kills the world.

Melissa, was like, trying to give the man an erection.

[upbeat music playing]

[Wendy] The little twist to our challenge

was that we had to get the attention

of Richard Johnson, the columnist for New York Post

and wrangle a mention in his column.

[upbeat music playing]

[rapid drumming]

[indistinct chatter]

You look good. How are you?

Richard Johnson works for Page Six, New York Post,

which is actually almost like-- uh, to some New Yorkers,

it's like almost like a daily bible.

Jenny and I were the first people to talk to Richard.

-[] Do you have a card? -[man] No!

Hi, Jenny.

-Hi. -I'm Richard.

Jenny just went over and introduced herself,

and they started talking about the outfit.

She really knows how to work a room.

[man] Ready to wear.

-My, oh! This is-- -Hi, uh...

-This is my designer. I love her. -I'm Kara Saun.

How are you?

You designed this package there?

-[Kara] Yes, I did. -It's very pretty.

I didn't stay and talk to him long.

I just wanted to sort of make an appearance

and let him see my work.

Pleasure to meeting you guys both.

-Bye. -[Jenny] Enjoy your night.

[cameras clicking]

-I'm Richard. -Richard? Nice to meet you.

[Richard] This is great.

So do you have an overriding

or is there a look at what you do?

Yeah. It's kind of classic and little Avant-garde.

it was a party and Morgan,

uh, she has great energy.

And I got lucky with Morgan.

He didn't get lucky like that.

and were our natural selves.

and fake... and I was pretty grossed out.

-[Austin] Yes. -Yes.

I went up and introduced myself,

and I think I talked a little bit about my design.

Are you showing the goods?

[Wendy] But I couldn't think of anything else

to say to him other than,

what just--what makes you mention someone in your column?

I knew when I was saying it that it's like

this is the most boring thing

you could ever ask him, but I'm interested.

What do you have to do to get in this stupid column?

We basically write about people who deserve to be read about,

you know, write the positive things.

[Wendy] I didn't have a plan

and it showed, I'm sure, to him.

And you're really selling that suit.

-Am I really? -[Richard] Yeah.

So hopefully, I'll sell it,

and then I'll be on the front page.

[laughter]

[upbeat music playing]

[Jay] Let's talk to this guy. Let's get it over with.

So I finally find this guy with lights all over him.

So I go, "That's my guy."

I'm Jesus.

-All right. -This is Julia, by the way.

Shake the man's hand.

I was just being Jay.

I was dressed as Jesus,

and it worked out much better

than the 30 Vandam thing.

It was pretty jovial.

I kept it lighthearted and casual

and fun and funny,

which is the way I like to do things.

-Ready, Richard? -[Richard] All right.

-Nice. I like it. -[Jay] Looks like S&M.

Well, I didn't mean it to be, you know?

I didn't, I design it that way,

but it just [bleep] turned out that way.

Everyone was just actually having a good time.

It was nice to see everybody actually, you know, dancing,

[Alexandra] Austin's model, Melissa

was, like, really flirty with Richard Johnson.

And she, like, went by herself

and she started talking with him.

[Jay] Melissa just kind of looked like

hired help for the night.

She was just sitting there with her legs crossed

and doing this, like, giggling.

[chuckles]

She just knows how to work it.

She is 16 going on 35.

[Robert] Right when I saw Melissa talking to, uh, Richard,

I told Olga, "You know what?

Just go and chill out with Melissa, get in there."

And she strolled herself over there and started--

you know, sort of sat down there, and I'm like,

"Yeah," I said, "Get your girl, you know, Jenny."

And Jenny went over there, too.

-[Richard] How do you do? -[Jenny] It's Jenny.

Tim basically said, you know,

we had to do whatever it takes to, uh,

get his attention and uh,

he's sort of, you know, a man's man.

He likes the beautiful, young ladies.

And so I just let her do what, uh, she does best

and, uh, let nature take its course.

[Richard] Fabulous!

[Jay] And Melissa was probably, like,

trying to give the man an erection.

-[woman] Yeah. -[laughter]

[Wendy] It's obvious to me that Melissa knows

exactly what she's doing.

Make a little--

Are you pissed off to her,

when she becomes the star of this, and you don't?

-That won't happen. -[laughs]

[Kevin] We're in the club

and, um, it was time to go,

and Morgan said that she's going to a club.

I said, "Well, I don't know

if it's good to wear my outfit there."

She said that she was gonna change

and she would take it with her.

I trust her. I believe in her.

[Kara] I don't think I would have taken that chance.

How about if something splits

or if she loses the top?

Do you have time to sit down

and make another top?

You probably won't.

They probably won't allow you to.

[Wendy] I'm really hoping Morgan

shows up in the outfit and it's not in 52 pieces.

[Kevin] We're fine.

[Robert] Today is the runway show

and one of--one of us is gonna get eliminated.

Uh, this is spicy.

I think Kevin could be going today maybe.

Hers just kind of looks like a dress.

I'd be concerned if I was Kevin about Morgan.

Hopefully, she's still in New York.

Uh, she's probably in Miami right now with--

and she's like, "I have a bathing suit on.

Let's go to the beach."

I went out to have a cigarette and Morgan's there.

-What happened? -It ripped.

Morgan, I swear to God,

she was planted by, like, demons in this show.

You know, just like the [bleep] model from hell.

I went to Marquee last night.

Very late.

Okay, I couldn't go back here.

So I had to wear Kevin's clothes out

and I ripped them.

Oops! [chuckles]

and I took a gamble, and picked her for this.

This week's challenge was to design a bathing suit,

take your model to a fashion industry party

and make a splash.

as they come down the runway.

You will be judged on the innovation of your design

and your ability to make a name for yourself in the press.

And the winner of this challenge

will have a guaranteed in for the next challenge

and cannot be eliminated.

And one of you will be out.

Now, let's meet the judges.

Constance White, fashion journalist

and style director of eBay.

Anne Slowey, Fashion News Director of Elle magazine.

And Richard Johnson,

head of New York Post's famous Page Six.

Let's start the show.

[upbeat music playing]

[Austin] I definitely wanted something that was,

you know, a little bit dressy,

but could certainly be worn in the pool.

I was certainly very happy with the way it came out.

[Kevin] Morgan tore it a little bit,

but it looked great up there.

She made it look great.

And when she's on stage, she's--it's her show.

[upbeat music playing]

[Robert] I did that one-piece bathing suit

not just for these like, size 2, 4 women,

but like also the size 12, 14 women

could also feel comfortable in a bathing suit

that I designed-- because, you know,

not everyone's like a toothpick.

[upbeat music playing]

[Wendy] It's essentially tarted up

for the purposes of this challenge.

But I believe that what you cover says more about you

than what you reveal.

[upbeat music playing]

[rapper] ♪ Not just physically Conquer mentally ♪

[upbeat music playing]

[Kara] They liked my bathing suit with my top,

and the fringe.

And when we went to the party,

it seemed like everybody loved it.

[upbeat music playing]

[rapper] ♪ Now physically, Conquer mentally ♪

[uptempo drums playing]

[Alexandra] It was just a simple bathing suit,

but I added the gold, you know, to make it more

of a party outfit, dress it up a bit.

It's very, very tiny.

But I'm used to the tiny bathing suits.

Those are the bathing suits I wear.

[upbeat music playing]

[Jay] I just kind of made two black Band-A*DS

with dental floss wrapped around it

with two little rings,

which ended up looking like an S&M outfit.

But it all came together somehow

and I--I'm pleased with it.

[upbeat music playing]

[intense music playing]

[Heidi] We've tallied your scores.

I want to ask all the designers

to please step onto the runway.

Kara Saun, please step forward.

You haven't won, but you have a guaranteed in,

because you won last week's challenge.

Robert, I was wondering if you could explain to me again

the similarity between fast cars and fashion models.

[Robert] I mean, it's just my personal belief,

but I believe a woman and a classic sports car

-are very much alike. -What?

[Robert] Meaning-- in my--you know, I got involved,

and you always notice most car collectors

always name their cars after women.

But just because it happens, doesn't mean it's right.

[chuckles]

[Heidi] Jay, tell us about your design.

[Jay] Kind of, like, sporty, gypsy, future something.

It's kind of how I usually always work.

Techno-Bohemian is what I do--

is pretty much how I go. So techno-Bohemian.

Now, Jay, uh, you're a very flamboyant character.

Hmm. Sometimes.

And fashion is a business.

And I'm trying to picture you in, like,

Four Seasons, at lunch

at a very serious business meeting.

Do you have what it takes to do the business end of it?

Hmm, you're k*lling me here.

Uh, tell me a bit about

what you were thinking when you did it.

I was influenced a lot by Missoni fabrics.

It has kind of like a Missoni feeling.

And also actually,

you know the bikini that Michael Kors did

for Celine, with the chains, with the gold?

That inspired me a lot.

So I was thinking, you know, that kind of look.

Could have been a little more creative than what you did.

-Austin. -[Austin] Yes.

And can you tell me a bit about

-your creation, please? -[Austin] Sure.

Sort of the first sort of imagery that came to my mind

was sort of the water nymph,

like a Venus, sort of ascending from the wave.

So I've sort of swathed her in winds and waters.

And, um, it was also very important for me

that it actually be a wearable,

workable bathing suit.

-Very Esther Williams. -[Austin] Thank you.

Again, glamorous, but entirely swimmable.

[Heidi] Kevin, is yours entirely swimmable?

Yeah, it's, um, it's made for swimming.

It's stretch--

it stretch--a swimsuit.

Because it doesn't really look like a bathing suit to me.

It doesn't look it, because it has the sleeves.

But the sleeves can be rolled up.

It's a full-body suit [indistinct]

and this is a scuba, uh, neoprene skirt.

[Richard] And do you think you made a good impression

last night or is there something you would have done different?

I'm--I think I was good.

-Maybe-- -You were good.

I was good.

I was good, I think.

[Anne] Wendy, can you tell me a little bit

about your suit and your design?

[Wendy] I tried to make a sort of colorful top

and have a system where if, you know,

she wanted to hide her upper thighs, she could.

The only thing I have a question about,

is it more of a dress than a suit?

And once this fabric gets wet,

how flattering is that going to be?

[Heidi] And what does happen underneath?

Is there a bottom that is, like--that you made as well?

Like, a bikini bottom or...

She is wearing a thong,

because I, um, had made a,

um, a thong for her.

But the elastic that I used,

what--we couldn't adjust it in time,

so we used a thong that she had,

just so that she could make it to the party.

Richard, I want to know who is the most news worthiest?

I think, uh, Austin made a very good presentation.

He's very sort of, uh, outgoing,

and, um, very talkative, very extroverted.

And, um, well, Jay is a--is a tremendous character as well.

But I think the two of them were pretty much

neck and neck in my opinion.

My favorite suit was Jay's suit.

[Anne] Yeah, it was very GUCCI-esque.

You know, I thought that was great.

But you also liked, uh, Robert as well, hmm?

Yeah. Robert, I thought was very sort of self-confident.

He was, um, relaxed.

He talked about himself very easily. And, um...

I wasn't, um, really keen on his suit at all.

[Robert]

[Kevin]

Wendy didn't really, uh, make much of an impression.

I think somebody mentioned to me that there was, like,

a mom from Virginia that was part of it.

It would have worked better for her

-if she had told that story. -And I had a problem

technically with her bathing suit

because it was missing the under part,

the actual bathing girdle, you know,

with the... [chuckles]

I didn't think, uh, Alexandra's suit was very interesting.

You know what I mean?

[Heidi] Also, how original was it?

She explained to us exactly who she copied.

No creativity.

What do you guys think about Kevin?

I ask him a couple of questions and he had a chance to,

you know, sort of defend himself

and talk about how great he is.

And he sort of muffed it, I thought.

At first I thought that is not a bathing suit,

because I thought it was just cotton and

you know, it was kind of like, loosey-goosey with the skirt.

I couldn't figure it out.

I mean, this time, it's really rough.

Okay. Let's bring out the designers.

[dramatic music playing]

[Heidi] This was a particularly difficult one across the board.

As you know, the winner of this challenge is the person

who designed the best swimsuit

and made the best impression on Richard Johnson.

And two of you made a very strong impact.

Jay and Austin,

to find your inspiration,

and it lacks originality.

Kevin, your design didn't look enough like a swimsuit.

-Kevin? -Yes.

and not turn to other designers for inspiration.
