to start your own line.

[Santino] Let's get it on.

The search for the next big fashion designer.

[designer] This is a dream come true.

I'm gonna do whatever it takes to win.

Sixteen designers.

Everyone here is crazy.

Drama has to happen.

Yes, I'm a competitive person.

[Heidi] Three finalists will make it

to Olympus Fashion Week.

You will see me at Fashion Week.

[Heidi] But only one can be the winner.

Heck yeah, I'm gonna win this.

For these 16 designers,

Project Runway is a chance of a lifetime.

[Chloe] I'm sad because Daniel Franco left.

And, you know, I thought he would be saved.

And I thought Santino would go.

You know, he was being very honorable,

and I thought he was a really good person.

I'm gonna all tear up again!

[Nick] You know, I think probably

the right designer went home.

Even though it looked-- it looked hazy

with Santino being so defensive with the judges.

[Santino] They can come for me again and again and again,

and every time, I can be on the chopping block.

But I won't ever apologize for what I've done.

[upbeat music playing]

[designers] Hello.

Are you guys ready for your next challenge?

[designers] Yes.

You will be designing a party dress

for one of America's hottest young socialites

to wear for a night on the town.

[designers] Ooh.

Tim will give you the details in a little bit.

But first,

let's bring out the winning and losing designers' models.

[tense music playing]

Models, this also is a competition for you as well.

The model paired with the winner of Project Runway

will get a fashion spread in ELLE magazine.

Daniel, you were the winner of the last challenge.

Your model was Rebecca.

If you decide to stay with her, Claudia will be out.

If you decide not to choose either of these two,

I will bring out all the models for you to pick from.

Daniel, what do you want to do?

Um, this is really difficult.

But I'll stay with Rebecca.

Rebecca, you're in.

Claudia, that means you're out.

So Heidi gave you the highlights of this challenge.

You are designing a party dress for a socialite.

These people are very, very important

to your careers

and to your future.

Consider that.

Daniel, would you come up and join me here?

I have a dossier for each of you

profiling your socialite.

And I want Daniel to open it and read it.

Okay. Here goes.

Oh, my gosh.

Say who it is.

Nicky Hilton.

[all oohing and aahing]

Nicky Hilton is an amazing muse for making beautiful things.

"Dear designers,

You have quite a challenge in front of you:

making me a party dress.

To make it fun,

tomorrow evening I'm hosting a party

for you and your models,

and I will be checking out your dresses

to determine the winner of this challenge."

[designer] I knew it.

My standards are high.

And my taste is exquisite.

So bring your best work and a good attitude.

See you then, Nicky."

All right? Are you excited?

[designers] Yeah!

[Tim] You have until midnight tonight

and then a to-be-determined amount of time tomorrow.

We're going shopping.

You have a budget of $150.

And I am giving you 30 minutes to design.

And then we'll be off.

[upbeat music playing]

[Chloe] Based on the book that we got,

we only got two pictures of her wearing...

One was really flashy,

the other one's a little bit more sophisticated.

And I thought this should look

sexy and sophisticated at the same time.

And so I made something really low-cut.

And I like back details

and just keeping something a little bit interesting.

[Marla] I did some ideas before we knew

it was Nicky Hilton.

The sketches that I came up with

were maybe more things that I would wear.

And then when I knew it was for Nicky,

it just kind of took me in a different direction.

But, uh, I can't say

that I make many party dresses these days.

[Kara J.] My sketch was very fresh, very girlie.

I did, of course, consider Nicky,

because this is your client.

You've got to really always make your client happy.

How's everyone doing?

[designers] Good, great. All right.

All right? You ready to go shopping?

-[designers] Yes. -Great.

[Tim] All right, everyone,

we have 30 minutes here at Mood.

Okay? Use your time well.

[speaking Spanish]

Okay, yeah, I'm gonna do black and white.

[Daniel V.] Going into the fabric store,

without a clear idea as to what you're gonna do

it's instant death, especially when you're on a time schedule.

[Santino] This is great.

I've been designing for rich girls all my life.

So I can turn $150

and make it look like $150,000.

Guys, please can I swap?

[designer] Thank you, Mood.

[upbeat music playing]

[Zulema] Nicky is definitely gonna notice my dress,

because I'm doing black leather with cream georgette.

Everyone's doing pink, blue, full black.

I have to set myself apart.

[Daniel V.] I purchased this beautiful,

geometric print, uh, silk satin.

And then I also bought, um,

what I thought was, uh, stretch black satin.

Against my better judgment,

I didn't take my fabric to the window

to see what it looked like in the sunlight.

And my "black" fabric turned out to be chocolate brown.

So you didn't know you bought brown?

Well, that's the thing is, like, there was lights in the back--

Yeah, okay.

And with the time schedule,

there's not always time.

-'Cause... -Yeah, okay.

Plan B was to try to scrounge up,

um, some extra black fabric.

And Kara and Marla both, uh, were using the fabric

that I had originally wanted.

[Daniel V.] I mean, this is definitely,

-like, exactly what I need. -Okay, I probably can do it.

Okay, let me know.

-You let me know. -Yeah.

Thank you.

I don't want you to rely on me.

When--If you can hold out,

I'll definitely give you whatever I've got.

Okay.

[Zulema] Did anyone remove a dress form from this area?

-Yes. -They need to return it.

I agree, 'cause mine's gone as well.

They need to return it right now.

We were getting ready to work,

and Zulema started flipping out,

'cause her mannequin's gone.

Whoever took a form, return it, please.

As the group gets smaller,

things are getting more intense.

That's how it feels to me.

Your form's gone now?

I had my mannequin sitting right at my desk.

I went out,

I come back in, my mannequin's gone.

Because someone took

the style tape off of it.

I need that form back.

That's not it, okay?

Did you just take this from over there?

I took a form.

[all speaking at once]

[designer] Where the hell is my chiffon?

[Heidi] Coming up on Project Runway.

[Tim] I don't want you to be a copycat.

I don't think that Santino can win this thing over me.

This ain't my first time at the rodeo.

[all speaking at once]

Did you just take this from over there?

[Marla] In the workroom,

things are getting more intense.

I took a form.

[both speaking at once]

I'm just looking-- No, it's okay.

I don't know-- I'm just trying to find...

[indistinct chatter]

[Marla] I retrieved my mannequin.

It's like you gotta kinda, like, bolt things down sometimes.

Phew, that was risk-- That was scary.

I think it is getting more competitive.

It's not even so much the competition with each other.

It's like a competition with yourself.

I want to prove to myself

that I am really creative and talented

and have the ability to make some great clothes.

Should just do it.

[Guadalupe] My dress is Japanese-inspired.

It's clean, um, but at the same time,

it's fun and feminine.

I added some detachable parts to draw the eyes

around the body.

Because a lot of my philosophy is based on

adding and subtracting, um, elements

based on your personal need.

[upbeat music playing]

[Santino] The judges raked me across the coals

the last challenge.

So if it calls for me making something beautiful,

I'll make the most beautiful thing.

Santino was very,

very defensive towards the judges.

And if he keeps it up, he's gone.

[designer] Tim.

[designer] Hey, Tim!

How is this progressing?

Uh, it's going well.

I'm getting ready to sew this up,

-which-- -What is it?

Looks like an octopus.

And then here is, um, the drape over here.

It'll look like this when it's sewn together

on the bottom part.

Okay.

Here's my design.

All right.

All right, well, I'm anxious to see how this develops.

-Okay. -Okay?

-How are you doing? -I'm doing pretty good.

I'm just doing the back,

and then I'm gonna start cutting.

-Great. -I'm getting better

-with my time now. -Okay, great.

I cut out the flowers.

How many of these are you using?

Just a couple, just a few.

Oh, I don't know.

[Guadalupe] Tim thought I was taking things

a little bit too far

with the trims and the embellishments.

But that's pretty much what I like to do.

I like to show them something

that maybe is a little bit out there

to test the boundaries.

So be careful, that's all.

-Okay. -All right?

Okay, so--

Can I tell you my first impression?

Yes.

This looks so much like the dress in the dossier.

Well, it's possibly true.

Wow.

'Cause it doesn't look like your sketch.

It looks like this.

And it's not-- I mean, to be honest,

that isn't particularly pretty.

I just want you to be Marla.

I think, from a creative standpoint,

I have been working at making a living

more than most of the other designers.

And so they've been able to maybe play more.

Yeah, listen to your own voice.

As a designer, I don't trust my own creative voice.

[Nick] Today is Nicky Hilton day.

I basically finished most of the dress.

So I feel confident with it.

[Daniel V.] Last night I didn't have enough fabric

to complete my design.

So I have to rethink the whole thing.

Diana, that looks like Stevie Nicks.

What's Stevie Nick?

[designer] Oh, my God.

-[Santino impersonating] Daniel. -What, Tim?

You don't even have fabric to finish the sides of your dress.

No, I don't.

I'm [bleep] myself.

You can sit there and complain about it or try to be creative

and think of another solution

So I just let the design process evolve around this great print

instead of just filling the black with another color.

-Good morning, everybody. -[designers] Good morning, Tim.

[Tim] Chloe, what do you think?

I'm happy with it.

-It's cute. -Yeah. It's me, it's simple.

But a little twist, and it's sexy.

-But, you know... -You pulled it off.

-Thank you. -You pulled it off.

I know I'm not a model body type, but I put it on,

and it just didn't feel right to me.

Something was wrong with it.

Yeah, I thought it looked like crap.

-I'm not gonna debate that. -Yeah, it looked like crap.

[Guadalupe] I was concerned.

'Cause again, I just never really know

how people are going to see the garment.

I am having some trouble with the fabric puckering.

[Tim] It's puckering, but I mean it's--

well, I'll be blunt.

It's that it's not well sewn.

I will just say you've got a lot of work to do.

[Diana] I'm a little bit concerned

about my inexperience design-wise.

And I think I need to make

my designs just more conventional

and more appealing towards everyone

instead of the conceptual ideas that I usually use.

Diana, this is "make it work" time for you.

Okay.

I'm gonna fray the edges and cut away

so that you can see more of it.

[Tim] And this is new?

-Yeah. -Perfect.

Maybe, like, you know. Like, yeah?

-Whoo. -Yeah.

[Nick] I think he's talented.

But I don't think that Santino can win this thing over me.

[Tim] Seeing how this has developed

it's more sophisticated than I remembered.

that definitely make it clear that it's not a copy.

[Daniel V.] Tonight for Nicky, you just want to look

polished as possible.

[Santino] I'm wearing five-inch stiletto pumps

that I thought would be memorable.

[Heidi] Coming up on Project Runway.

They gave us some pictures of like you with a Chloe dress on.

Yeah. I saw a dress that looked like my Chloe dress,

the black one?

[designer] We all decided to a walk off.

[cheering]

[upbeat music playing]

[Nick] We were invited to go

to a Nicky Hilton party at Marquee.

And we went there with our models

dressed in our designs

to show Nicky Hilton.

[designers] Hi.

Hello, everybody.

[designers] Hi, Heidi.

-Hi. -I want to introduce to you

our guest of honor.

This is Nicky Hilton.

Hi, guys.

[designer] Hi, Nicky.

I'm so excited to be here.

I love fashion.

I know you guys love fashion,

and I'm just so psyched to see

what all of you guys have designed today.

[Heidi] I also don't want you to forget

that this is your client.

Make yourself memorable.

And sell that dress to her.

Let's pop some bottles.

[Daniel V.] Rebecca and I were the first ones

to approach Nicky.

Just kind of wanted to make that first--

that great first impression.

-I love that. -And, um, in this, um,

silk satin, it's a brand-new print.

-Uh, just arrived from Italy, so -It's pretty, right?

[Daniel V.] I had a lot of people say,

"Who's the designer? We love this dress."

So I'm hoping that Nicky also liked it as well.

'Cause in the end, that's the most important.

This is my model Tarah, and this is my dress.

[Nicky] Hi.

It's one of my favorite colors.

I sort of guessed that.

Yeah, I did a bias cut.

I love that.

And then I draped it in the back with a--

Oh, that's pretty.

You know, so when you, like, hit the red carpet,

you know, you show the back, and you're like, "Hello."

[laughter]

[Nick] My interaction was good.

I just felt like, you know, a little Mexican kid in Tijuana.

Like, buy my gum, buy my chicle.

It's, like, it's sort of pathetic,

so I just said, you know, this is my gown,

and I hope you like it.

[Andrae] So it's a dress that will travel well.

Mm-hmm.

'Cause it's all completely made of jersey,

so you can throw it into a suitcase--

-See, that's what I love. -Thanks.

[upbeat music playing]

-I love that. -I just--

I just think this is just stunning for you.

It's empire. I know that for you--

I know us small girls.

This is definitely one of my favorites so far.

This is pretty.

And we added an extra flowy skirt,

so that if, you know, you're dancing,

you'll attract more attention than other people will.

Turn around so that, you know,

just a little, sexy, versatile dress.

I don't want to impose my opinion on someone

who I don't know.

I just like this sort of a silhouette.

It's sort of like a tough,

nice girl sort of thing that I sort of do.

[Nicky] I love the braiding on it.

I'm actually starting

a holiday dress line, and I did a lot of braiding,

like, under the bustline and strap.

I was channeling you, honey, I was channeling you.

My name's Lupe, and, uh,

I designed you a beautiful garment today.

It's basically a basic black, you know.

If you just wanted to go out and, like, do whatever.

I basically tried to present something

that would show my whole style.

They gave us something to kind of, like, inspire us.

Like some pictures of, like, you at certain events, uh,

with a Chloe dress on, and to show us,

-to give us an idea-- -Yeah, I saw a dress

that looked like my Chloe dress I wore, the black one?

Yeah.

"I don't know what happened."

that I could be eliminated

for making a dress that looks too

reminiscent of the one she wore.

So of course I'm worried.

will shake her [bleep] like all the rest of us.

So she's now "Dirty Diana."

[Andrae] We all got together and decided to do

a walk-off a la Zoolander.

[Zulema] So we pulled everyone together,

went to the back, and we had a designer walk-off.

It was so much fun, because each designer

had their own personality.

Guadalupe did a whole, um, caterpillar.

[Andrae] Of course, Santino and Nick

are the best walkers.

We have two hours for you

to refit your models,

to take them to the TRESemmé hair salon,

to go to the L'Oréal Paris makeup room,

distinguish it from the dress in the picture.

You know, I had maybe skin showing

that I'm covering up.

Actually, I like that updo Diana's doing.

But I don't want to do that, 'cause she's doing that.

But maybe, I mean, if you can do a variation.

When I looked around the room and saw

everybody else's things, and then I looked at mine,

I was a little scared, you know,

about what was gonna happen.

I don't want to be eliminated.

I find it a little bit unflattering.

It's just too much.

I think that just took it too far.

Welcome to the runway.

As you know, in fashion, one day you're in,

and the next day you might be out.

There are 11 of you right now.

And at the end of tonight,

there will be only 10 left.

Your challenge was to design a party dress

for Nicky Hilton.

We gave you $150 and two days

to put it together.

You had the chance to meet Nicky last night

and show her your dress.

Let's meet the judges.

Fashion designer, Michael Kors.

Nina Garcia, fashion director of ELLE magazine.

And your client, Nicky Hilton,

who has her own line, Chick.

We will be scoring your designs

as they come down the runway.

Nicky will pick the winner.

And one of you will be out.

Let's start the show.

[Santino] I kind of knew what she wanted.

And the fabrics that I selected,

I selected them because they look

like her natural blue eye color.

[upbeat music playing]

[Chloe] Just thought I would do something strong and sexy.

And I think she's strong and sexy.

I see her as a celebrity.

And I thought for a celebrity, you need color

to stand out.

[upbeat music playing]

[Andrae] I tried so hard

to really wrap my brain around

what it's like to be Nicky Hilton.

And I wanted to create something

that was just really beautiful

and that was easy to wear.

[Emmett] I'm a menswear designer.

So it took a lot of effort for me

to make something delicate and feminine.

But I liked my look when it came down the runway.

[upbeat music playing]

[Zulema] My dress may be a little tough for Nicky.

If she feels like being a little naughty for the night,

yes, she'll wear my dress.

[Diana] I think the personality of the designer

is just as important as the clothing,

because you're kind of selling the idea

of you or a style

when you're selling your clothing.

[Nick] I felt really confident,

and I thought she looked hot.

She looked exactly what I wanted her to look like.

[Guadalupe] I don't think Nicky will hate my garment,

but I don't know if she'll like it.

I just never really know

how people are going to see the garment.

[upbeat music playing]

[Kara J.] At the club, Nicky had said

that it was one of her favorite dresses.

So I felt very confident.

[Marla] I can't say that my design wasn't influenced

by the Chloe dress.

But I put some more personal touches into it,

so I'll see what they decide.

[Daniel V.] Yesterday when I was still

having those fabric issues,

it was just very frustrating.

But I thought it looked gorgeous

when it came down the runway.

[Heidi] We've tallied your scores.

I want to ask the designers

to please come onto the runway.

[tense music playing]

Santino,

do you want to tell us a little bit about

your party dress for Nicky?

The first thing that I ever noticed about you

was your eye color.

I wanted to, uh,

design around a color,

um, to express something

that's already inherently a part of you.

I think it's a k*ller, k*ller dress.

I mean, I think you have the attitude

to succeed in this business.

Nick, do you want to tell us a little bit about

your party dress?

I wanted to take her, Nicky,

and make her into a 2005 version

of the Hollywood screen goddesses.

It's really beautiful, and it's got

a beautiful back.

Fits well, the back is beautiful,

so you'll get a great shot there.

I think it's very, very pretty.

Thank you. [chuckles]

Guadalupe.

So what I did was I took black and, um,

texture, um, which is almost like very Japanese.

A lot of the things that I like to do too is, um, add

detachable things, which these aren't detachable at this point,

but if you wanted more flowers,

or if you felt like

you wanted to just take away things,

you could do that as well.

I like the idea, but I think

that you just took it too far.

There's a lot going on.

[Nina] I agree with Nicky.

I think there's too much of everything.

Too much of ruffles, too much of trim.

It's just too much.

The tabloid press are vicious.

They are vicious.

So, like, if she wore that dress,

they could say, "Are there green socks on her dress?"

Like, what is that?

They don't know what it is.

Chloe, you want to talk about your party dress?

The reason I did silk charmeuse is

you're used to expensive clothing.

And this should look

sexy and sophisticated at the same time.

And silk charmeuse done right is expensive-looking.

Just to me, was my idea of you.

Well, blue and black are my favorite colors to wear.

And I think the presentation's great.

I mean... I like it.

Thank you.

Okay, Diana.

I created a black dress for you.

And since I was using all black,

I tried to create different patterns

by changing the texture of the fabric.

I also added the belt,

so that it could have, like, an elegant touch to it.

[Nicky] I think the belt's very chic.

But the bottom, it's just

not that flattering.

Kind of makes a girl

look like she'd have, like, a big butt or something.

[Michael] It's like, you know, like, you don't want anyone

to, like, look at the picture and go,

to a Chloe dress I had worn, um, a month ago.

because it is so pouffy on the bottom

and so short on top.

I really liked Chloe's piece.

But if you wore Guadalupe's dress,
