I'd rather have my own space.

But if I can't, you know, it's okay.

I lived with people before.

I don't think it's gonna get any more competitive.

I thought it was already competitive from day one!

-Zulema? -[Zulema] Yes.

I'm here now, they made me move in here.

[Kara J.] Oh wow, you moved in. Welcome.

tomorrow's challenge will concern

designing for an airline.

[Kara J.] I didn't know what the challenge was,

because we didn't know what to expect.

I've got a special delivery for you guys.

The doorbell rang,

and it was Rob from last season with a package.

And he was dressed as a U.S. postman.

I have to say, I was a little surprised

I had no idea what it was.

"Designers, part one of your challenge

requires each of you to outfit yourselves."

-Ahh! -Ahh!

[Nick] "Please get dressed

with these clothes?

[screams and laughter]

[Chloe] This is not my color.

Once we realized that we actually have to wear this,

I thought it was a blast.

I don't know what it is, but, um, I have no problem

dressing like a fool.

This is ballroom dancing.

Mine's like a unitard.

[Santino] I didn't know if it

was, like, a waiter's outfit,

or some type of dance costume.

Why are you--oh my God!

Imagine what Emmett's going to look like!

Oh! Emmett!

I mean, it's just out of control.

[laughter]

[Nick] Oh, my goodness, Emmett.

He was wearing a neon pink blouson top.

Without the V-neck, with a mock turtleneck.

It was like International Male gone...

[Santino] I wasn't quite sure where we were headed.

I've stopped guessing.

[Nick] What the--ice-skating?

Lickety-split we ended up at an ice skating rink.

Now, I went triple crazy because all of a sudden,

it dawned on me, we're gonna design ice-skating costumes.

[gasp] Oh, my God!

[Nick] Hi! Oh wow.

We got into the ice-skating rink,

and there she was.

The Sasha Cohen.

I-I-I was literally speechless.

[Nick] Oh, wow, bravo!

[applause]

[Tim] Welcome to Ice House.

I am thrilled to introduce you to World Silver medalist,

and 2002 Olympian, Sasha Cohen.

[cheers and applause]

[Nick] I'm, oh, my God, I'm standing

ten feet away from Sasha Cohen

in this tacky costume.

And Sasha's going to introduce your next challenge.

Your next challenge

is to make a figure-skating

costume for me!

Oh, yes, yes!

Can I ask you Sasha, what's most important

to you in your costume?

[Sasha] It's really important for the outfit to stretch

really well using lycras.

Elastic so the panties stay on,

and the tops stays up.

And it's important for them to not be too heavy,

so that we can still jump and spin in them.

[Andrae] It's not just a pretty dress.

It is a functional garment

that has to perform tricks basically.

So why don't you guys all go get

your skates on and come out here,

and I'll give you guys a lesson.

[Zulema] I was a little hesitant.

I've only ice-skated once before in my life.

Yay!

I-I've just died and went to heaven.

I was just like, oh, Lord.

I need help.

-[screaming] -All right.

[laughter]

[Santino] Ahh!

[Andrae] Hold on, we're playing tag.

[Chloe] Don't anyone touch me.

No, no, no, don't go fast!

[Chloe] Santino, be careful!

[Nick] I always get into it when I watch the shows,

Look at Sasha, I love Sasha!

[Sasha] Tim you doing okay?

I'm--I'm--I can't set myself in motion,

[Emmett] It was draw who was the most awkward.

It was definitely between Tim Gunn and Kara.

And they both looked like

they were petrified of the ice.

Forward.

Nice and slow, nice and slow.

[laughter]

[Sasha] It's called sh**t the Duck, it's a--the dip.

-sh**t the-- -Oh, hell no.

[Nick] Oh that's hot.

[Santino] Man, I love ice-skating.

Wind, and then go.

[Santino] There's definitely a healthy amount

of competition in the workroom,

but it felt like we were kind of bonding

a little bit.

Too much competition is a little much.

[Sasha] All right,

let's all do a choo-choo around the rink

and, uh...

let's try to do it maybe, you know,

in ascending order by height.

[designers] Okay.

So, we'll be in the front.

-Okay. -All right.

Choo!

[Tim] This is fast.

[Zulema] Yeah, it is.

-I'm fine. -Keep your knees bent.

[Zulema] Don't worry about me, Tim.

[Sasha] I'm gonna make it a little bit more curvy.

[Emmett] Curve, curve, curve.

[Zulema] Curve, curve.

This challenge is to design

an ice-skating costume for Sasha Cohen.

Okay, everybody.

You have 30 minutes to sketch.

And you have $150 budget.

And there's one other thing.

Counting today,

you have two days for this challenge.

Sasha, she's a very petite little girl.

You just don't want to put her in something that's too heavy,

too heavy-looking, uh, too bold.

[Andrae] Sasha Cohen is really pretty.

I'd like her to be a dark princess

and not quite so smiley-happy,

and certainly still dramatic,

but maybe a little bit menacing.

It's a lot of things to consider,

making this ice-skating dress for her.

This is a tough challenge, I think.

How're you all doing?

[designer] Good, good.

You ready to go shopping?

-[Zulema] Yes. -[Tim] Okay good.

Guess what, everybody? You can't change.

Oh, I knew it!

[Nick] No! I knew it!

[Tim] Off we go.

[Nick] Oh, he's so evil.

[Tim] This is it.

Have you found that four-way fit?

This is more like it.

This fabric is four-way stretch.

It's tough to sew.

I am doing an ice princess sort of theme.

It's about this woman

going from being ugly to this, like, beautiful swan.

Is this just jersey up here?

Two yards of this, please.

[Emmett] I thought about the midnight sky

and the sparkling stars.

Navy makes a very strong statement.

Silver is a nice compliment to that.

So, it'll be very strong from a distance

and very pretty up close.

[Daniel V.] We stopped at Daytona

and picked up some trims.

I think I spent

$50 on all my fabrics and $90 on trims.

I need lots of sequins.

[Zulema] This is a challenge to the extreme for me.

I am not a sequin girl.

I have never used sequin before.

I have never used glitter, beading,

or anything like that.

There's no iron-on in this color?

That's what I need.

-That looks more... -No.

Okay, can I get five inches of this?

Two of this one.

How much are these plumes?

[Chloe] Santino, he likes to be really

theatrical, you know, really ornate, a lot of things

hanging everywhere.

And not everybody can carry that off.

One black, one red.

-Nick. -Yes.

-You have three minutes. -Okay, okay.

-Okay, three. -Okay.

[Tim] Quick, quick, quick, you gotta go, go, go.

[Andrae] All right, let's do it.

My dress for Sasha, it's gonna be made of mainly

silk chiffon cut on the bias.

It's gonna overlap to each other.

So that's weird to figure out how to sew that into a stretch.

-My charmeuse is stretch. -Is stretch?

Yeah, and this is stretch as well.

I kind of like it glittery

though, I mean, it's--

it verges on tacky.

This was a crash course for me,

to work with stretch fabrics.

My whole career has been as a menswear designer.

For me, womenswear is, like,

a completely new way of expressing myself.

I-I don't know how much of a judge I am,

like, a judge on ice skating outfits.

So, you're really--

it's the blind leading the blind here, you know?

I think Emmett is a bit out of his league.

I just don't think technically

and design-wise, he's-- he's at the point

where he needs to be

to have his own womenswear line.

How hard is this stuff to seam together, Kara?

[Kara J.] As long as you keep it flat,

As long as you don't pull at it

while you're sewing...

-You know? -[Emmett] Yeah.

[Kara J.] You've gotta realize that it's got

so much movement, that you got to keep it completely...

I don't know,

I've never done it on a machine like this.

[Kara J.] Nicks, does that look really bad?

I'm not teaching today.

[Santino] I think Kara is constantly

asking way too many questions

from other people,

asking what everybody else thinks.

I could pin that there, and then it just does

-this sort of thing. -I would definitely go for that.

Look, it's so easy.

And you cut this already, therefore.

Yeah, go for it. Trust your instincts.

[Chloe] Santino. [laughing]

I don't know what the hell he's doing.

Is that both sides?

You need to stop.

-N-n-no, I'm just asking. -Right now, Chloe.

[Chloe] You know, there's only eight of us now.

This group is really about

if you have the talent and the skill, you should stay.

Well, you know, nobody asked my opinion.

I would say something.

[Nick] I think Santino--

he's very talented, and he has a great eye.

But for this challenge,

it's a little over-the-top.

[Zulema] The way Santino works

is that he cuts directly on fabric,

he goes to the sewing machine,

and he starts tacking on things.

So I think already you saw--

wait a minute, what the hell is going on?

There is just already too much going on

in the back of his garment.

[upbeat music playing]

[Emmett] I never sew.

I know how to, but I don't.

[sewing machine whirring]

[Andrae] Do you have an overlock at home?

I use my overlockers and my coverstitch machine.

The overlock machines are specifically geared

to sew stretch fabrics.

And without these machines,

it makes it considerably difficult

to sew anything that is supposed to expand or contract.

Sewing without an overlock machine

is like sewing with one hand tied behind your back.

I cannot believe this.

[Santino] What happened, it unthreaded?

It broke!

Oh, I need a screwdriver.

-[gasp] -[laughing]

Oh, no, you didn't.

[Zulema] No, no not on this one, the other one.

-Off with her head! -[Zulema laughs]

[Andrae] I decided that I was going to figure out

how the overlock machines were threaded

while the other designers

are working on their ice-skating outfits.

[Zulema] Andrae was wonderful enough

to not even start his project yet,

to go in the, um, sewing room

and actually fix the overlock machine.

I wouldn't, because I would have never finished.

[tense music playing]

[Nick] Andrae's so dramatic.

[in mocking accent] Oh, it's the end of the world!

Cannot use the overlock!

[Andrae] So I have just finished threading

both of those overlock machines.

They work now.

So if you [bleep] it up,

anybody who [bleep] it up,

you're gonna have to thread it yourself.

[Andrae] I freak out when things aren't perfect.

So I got the overlock machines working.

Then I didn't have enough time to work on my outfit.

[dramatic music playing]

[Heidi] Coming up on Project Runway...

[mocking Michael Kors] "She looks like...

like a baboon's a*s exploded on her backside."

[Nick] Santino's 'cause his just looks ca-razy.

[upbeat music playing]

[Andrae] I'm not against helping people,

but um, I'm not gonna help you

at the expense of my own project.

Everyone was relieved that I fixed

the overlock machines.

If it's broken again,

I'm not gonna try and fix it.

[Daniel V.] I think just the fact that

more designers are leaving, it's obviously becoming

more competitive for all of us.

I hope we can go through this

and just let the best designer win.

[Andrae] And then, there were eight.

[upbeat music playing]

How are you?

I just want to give you

a little "make it work" talk,

uh, primarily about the machines.

I had maintenance look at them,

but they can only do so much.

So just make them work as well as you can.

You may need to do things by hand

that you wouldn't want to do otherwise.

Emmett, how are you doing?

[Emmett] In the front, I have

the open neckline with the mesh.

And I will have the sequins going on top of this

in the Van Gogh pattern

of The Starry Night.

My only concern is this looks so dark.

Well, I'll see it further along.

How's Zulema?

I'm doing okay.

I'm doing, um, Swan Lake.

I'm gonna have her, like, almost iced over.

And I'm taking white sequin,

and I'm doing feather shapes.

And I'm going to put the sequin around with some glitter.

This sounds very ambitious,

but it also sounds really beautiful.

How are you feeling about time?

[laughing] Always rushing to the end.

How's Andrae?

This is Princess Cyclone.

It's going to be all symmetrical and with,

um, movement going diagonally around the body.

Well, I'm anxious to see where this goes.

-Definitely stay tuned. -[Tim] Okay, Andrae.

Can I see you, Kara? And what you're doing?

I've tried to just do--

see what would happen if I put my sparkles on.

What about the placement of this?

I think it's very classical.

With a little--it's a little bit of an edge, you know?

Just be careful that there's enough innovation here

that the judges don't say,

"Haven't we seen this before?"

[Daniel V.] Kara's, um, outfit--

I just know that...

I wouldn't have designed something like that.

It was so basic, but not in a Calvin Klein way.

It was basic in a J.C. Penney way.

How's Santino?

[Santino] Hey, Tim.

Basically, the inspiration for this piece

is a Phoenix rising from the flames.

These are my sketches.

I wanna play with cut like a little bit of cutout

and then feath-- you know, maybe some feathers.

I'm...a little conflicted

about how to talk to you about this.

It's like, it's Santino,

-it's so over-the-top. -Right.

Think about a way of responding to Michael and Nina...

-[Santino] Uh-huh. -That's less [bleep] you.

You have so much, it's aesthetically not pleasing.

I'm sorry.

I'm sorry, Nina.

[Santino] Trying to make, like, the biggest dramatic

statement that I can send down the runway,

that's where I'm at.

I'm not doing something traditional

and not doing something lame.

It's a dramatic statement,

and that... looks like something.

[Tim] Okay everybody,

This is so, like, inordinately dreadful.

[Kara J.] The overlock needle broke.

I didn't do anything out of the ordinary,

and this thing just broke.

[Nick] The overlock needle broke?

Just snapped in half.

[Zulema] Everyone's designs are teetering on those machines.

It's very difficult to do stretch

without an overlock.

[sigh]

[Zulema] All I have to say is grief.

I'm so grief-stricken right now.

[Chloe] I don't think it's anybody's fault,

I think it's the machines.

No, it's not the machines' fault!

The person who touches it is the variable.

No one can finish their garments properly.

And I wouldn't be surprised if there aren't

a few popped seams on the runway tomorrow.

Just start gluing [bleep] on.

[Daniel V.] I can't yet, I can't yet.

[Santino] Just glue it.

It's funny how fast hand sewing goes sometimes.

Now, you're gonna see who's really creative,

to see who can successfully

put this garment together without the seams popping.

[upbeat music playing]

I've got a lot to do.

Oh, it's just dumb.

It's just bad Valley of the Dolls.

I hate that.

[Emmett] If I could hand-tack it like that and call it a day.

to kind of tone down

the seriousness and add some humor.

[Santino] But I said that every time I get up on the runway,

my adrenaline starts pumping like I'm backed in the corner

and I'm ready to get into a fistfight.

The bottom line is I can talk my way out of a situation

or I can eat them.

Like, and if it-- if it comes down

to, like, having to eat somebody,

I'll eat somebody.

[Zulema] I was a little uncertain about the outfit,

only because I had never worked with sequin before.

I'm hoping that when my model comes down the runway,

my vision comes to life.

I have eight little ice-skaters in front of me.

Well as you know, in fashion,

one day you're in, and the next day you're out.

There's eight of you now, eight little ice-skaters...

And at the end of tonight, there will be seven.

Three of you will make it

to Olympus Fashion Week where the winner will be chosen.

Your challenge was to design a figure-skating dress

for Sasha Cohen,

two-time World Silver medalist

and Olympian at the 2002 Winter Games.

We gave you $150 for fabrics and supplies

and two days to put it together.

All right, let's meet the judges.

Fashion designer, Michael Kors,

Anne Slowey, Fashion News Director of ELLE magazine,

and your client, Sasha Cohen.

[designers] Hi, Sasha.

[Heidi] Sasha has agreed to wear the winning design

in an upcoming figure-skating exhibition.

We will be scoring your designs

as they come down the runway.

One of you will be named the winner,

I thought she looked amazing.

The outfit looked-- it looked really nice,

so I was very happy for that.

she really looked naked

with, like, just sequin sectioned all over her body.

I really liked it a lot.

[Kara J.] It's always really great

to see the outfit come down the runway.

It just looked amazing.

I thought it had some razzle dazzle and it--

and that's what I was going for, some cha cha cha.

[Emmett] I was very proud of what

I had put together for the Runway.

It was a very tasteful ensemble.

[upbeat music playing]

[Andrae] I feel like I've done something that's clever

and modern and different,

but still hits all the marks that you need

to do when designing an ice-skating costume.

[upbeat music playing]

[Santino] I felt that what I had made

for Sasha Cohen was a great concept.

And I think that with more time

I could have taken it somewhere.

[upbeat music playing]

[Nick] Going into the runway show for Sasha Cohen,

I was very, very excited.

I was proud of my design. I felt good.

[upbeat music playing]

[Chloe] My skating outfit looked really good on Grace.

And I had a bit of a concern with her wearing it,

'cause she's so tall.

I think it worked out pretty well.

I was pleased with it.

I would like to start with Chloe.

Sasha.

The color is definitely

something that's not used much on the ice.

And it's also very creative.

I've never seen a dress really start

from kind of like skirt

from the top all the way to the bottom.

But I'm not sure with my figure, if it would give me much shape

because I'm pretty straight.

Shape-wise I was concerned that's why I made

smaller one and bigger one down here,

so that you can at least see the shape.

You thought about trying

to make something feminine and different.

And also, it is nice to see a different color

for this world.

I think it's great looking.

I would like to continue with Kara.

[Anne] What was your concept?

Who is this woman, what era is she from?

She's 1920's, she's All That Jazz.

I really, kind of drew inspiration from that.

Typically, with an ice-skater's thighs,

I think the fringe could be quite unflattering.

[Michael] To me it's very Vegas.

I think I could see it, you know,

a Bob Fosse moment, or whatever, but...

if I really think of Sasha, it doesn't...

feel like her to me.

Emmett.

Yes.

[Sasha] Can I ask you to turn around,

so I can look at the back.

I'm not too keen on the style of the skirt,

I would say.

The shortness of the skirt bothers me tremendously.

There's entirely too much tootie being exposed.

It's slightly vulgar in my opinion.

On the mannequin that I fit this on,

it's a different shape than the model.

So it's not supposed to be that short.

The style looks sort of, like how it always has been,

and I feel like

now you want to look for, like,

new shapes in ice-skating.

It's like an old lady ice-skater.

[Heidi] Zulema,

see what Sasha has to say about your dress.

The color is nice.

I think that it was really creative

the swirls that you used around the design.

It's definitely something

that looks like it would work on the ice.

It's a nice creation you have.

It looks very, sort of,

"skate friendly,"

plus, it's sexy without being vulgar.

It's got a-- it's got a chic look to it.

Sasha, how do you like Santino's dress?

Well, I have to say that I definitely like

the ruching on the stomach.

And I think if I remember, the back was pretty big.

Yeah, there is, um...

[Sasha] A lot going on.

Yeah, there's a lot of chiffon

and netting to create the illusion of fire,

a Phoenix rising from the flames.

Once again, I always am trying to push myself

and change the shapes that I know of

and that I've seen before.

And I was trying to create something that

was, um, you know,

conceptual and inspirational, and maybe, you know...

From the waist up, I would agree.

I actually really love the elegance

of the feather detail.

The back is...

It's like Carmen Miranda on acid.

[Santino] You know, I feel like,

yeah, I did take some risks.

And, um, I am pretty happy with what I've created.

It is beyond not flattering.

To me, unless she was opening a Thanksgiving pageant,

and the Indians were chasing the turkey,

I can't even imagine.

You've got a lot of ideas, you...

Very conceptual.

But it's about her!

[Santino] No, totally.

[Michael] It's really about her.

I don't think you're looking at the woman involved

and the project at hand.

[Heidi] We've seen your designs,

we've heard what you had to say,

I am torn.

[Heidi] I can definitely see you in Zulema's dress

and I can see you in Chloe's dress.

How about Chloe?

It was like, it was such a good base.

[Michael] The turquoise was very pretty,

because it wasn't the usual.

She definitely thinks a little bit outside of the box.

She is modern and simple...

And woman-friendly I will say this.

Very clean, clean line.

[Michael] Clean, woman-friendly.

I go for the turquoise.

How did you like, um, Kara's ice-skating dress?

I'm not sure if the--

if the straight dropping tassel skirt

would give much flow or much shape on the ice.

It didn't strike me as so unusual and special.

There wasn't anything in it that sort of made me

think of you.

[Heidi] How did you like Zulema's dress?

I saw it as having potential.

White looks good on me, it looks good on the ice.

And it had a tight-fitting form.

It was different around the bust, and it had a, um,

a real interesting kind of swirl

in here, and...

It looked really elegant.

What did you think of Emmett's?

I thought that--

that he didn't use any creativity.

He picked fabric with something in it,

but there was no design.

There was no imagination, definitely in Emmett's dress.

That outfit looked so dowdy, it looked very vulgar.

It's not easy to be vulgar and dowdy.

You know, he managed to do it.

How about Santino?

It was definitely--could never work for a skating dress

because it had, like, you know,

a storage backpack in the back.

I am ready to give Santino my Auf Wiedersehen today.

He's supposed to design a dress for you.

[Michael] God, doesn't he want to listen.

He never listens.

He doesn't seem to know how to reign it in, you know?

He's just all expression, no editing.
