I'm going to do whatever it takes to win.

[Heidi] Three finalists will make it

to Olympus Fashion Week.

You will see me at Fashion Week.

[Heidi] But only one can be the winner.

Heck, yeah, I'm gonna win this.

For these 16 designers,

Project Runway is a chance of a lifetime.

[Chloe] Nina Garcia asked Santino,

"So what's up with the sleeve?"

[Kara J.] On the runway, he's like,

"Your sleeve, your sleeve, your sleeve, tuck it in."

I'm like, are you crazy?

[Chloe] I didn't think Nick should go.

But, you know, Santino, I think, got lucky again

and survived.

If he makes it to final three,

who's gonna really sew his stuff?

'Cause he hasn't really machine sewed anything for real.

If he couldn't sew that jumpsuit...

That man would k*ll his young to go to the final three, okay?

-Ah! -I swear, he'd k*ll--

If he doesn't, he would walk over anyone,

as far as I'm concerned.

[Daniel V.] Santino, just really pissed me off.

I really don't have

a whole lot to say to him.

Nick is now gone from 35D.

Hopefully it's me and the girls,

uh, for the final three.

[Santino] I think everybody has contempt for me here.

There's just one more person

that needs to Auf Wiedersehen.

I feel really pumped up,

and I feel like, um...

You guys are ready for your next challenge, right?

[Heidi] Because this one is a very important one.

It will determine which three of you will make it

to Olympus Fashion Week,

where the winner of Project Runway

will be chosen.

Okay, here it is:

You will be designing an evening gown.

-[designers muttering] -[Heidi] And that evening gown

must represent...

the collection that you will show

at Olympus Fashion Week.

Yike.

-Oh, my God. -Just like that.

So I hope you all thought about it already

what you're all gonna do.

This is a little sneak preview for us.

Let's bring out the winning and losing designers' models.

Good morning, everybody.

Can I ask you all to gather round?

It's a little, small group, isn't it?

On the topic of Olympus Fashion Week,

it does happen worldwide.

And 7th on Sixth is the organizer of all this.

Fern Mallis is the executive director.

We are going on a brief

field trip to have an audience with Fern.

-Oh, great. -Ah, wow.

[Tim] This is your opportunity

to ask Fern questions about Fashion Week.

So we're going right now.

-Isn't it great? -That is great.

-Yeah. -[Kara J.] It was amazing.

I mean, you know, face-to-face

with a woman of such power

and such, um, esteem in the fashion industry.

[Chloe] She's like a fashion icon in this city,

in my opinion.

She decides who gets to be in the tent,

bottom line.

And you wanna be in the tent.

[Tim] So designers,

how thrilling to have 7th on Sixth executive director

Fern Mallis here,

to have a private audience with you!

-This is really wonderful. -Hi, Fern.

[Mallis] Well, very pleased to do it.

We put on about 70 shows a week in the tents.

And we want to make sure

that we present the best shows, you know,

the people who really have a point of view.

[Santino] Do you believe that

most people in the audience of a runway show

tend to remember the things that they don't like

versus things that they do like?

I think that they've been pretty well trained

to remember the good stuff.

It's those good things that add up in their notebook

that they look at, at the end of a week or a season.

Any beginner mistakes

that you can kind of give to us to avoid?

I can't ever underestimate being nice.

[Daniel V.] When Fern was talking to us

about being nice, I had wanted to just

really quickly glance at Santino

and, you know, and just kind of say,

"Lookit, I told you so."

It doesn't help to be a b*tch and to be nasty and to win

that battle by being the tyrant.

People have no patience for that.

In the long run,

it's about people working with people.

[Santino] You can't be nice all the time.

I wanna win this competition,

Olympus Fashion Week.

Um, it's the Super Bowl of American fashion.

We look forward to seeing... three of you.

So go out there and go knock our socks off.

[Tim] Yes, right.

[instrumental music playing]

[Tim] We're back at Parsons

The New School For Design,

and you have an hour to sketch.

[Chloe] We found out our last challenge would be

to design an evening gown that would reflect

our collection if we make it to Fashion Week.

My collection is 1940s Hollywood Glamour.

So my dress is completely open back.

Slightly sexy, but sophisticated.

Um, definitely clean lines. Nothing messy.

[Daniel V.] When I sat down to sketch,

I had a specific silhouette.

I wanted something very high impact for the runway,

which meant, um, a high slit and flowing fabric,

very body-conscious, which is something

that I'm kind of known for.

[Santino] My theme for my perspective collection-

it's very Hollywood.

It's gonna be very glamorous.

Making the magic happen, creating a really amazing dress.

[Kara J.] Evening wear.

Quite a challenge for me, because, as I say,

it's not something that's familiar.

When I started sketching, it wasn't--

I didn't know what I wanted exactly.

[Tim] Hi, everybody.

-Ready to go shopping? -Mm-hmm.

All right, we have an hour.

And there's one other thing.

Counting today, you have two days for this challenge.

[upbeat music playing]

Color story wise, I'm debating between-

I need a silk charmeuse or a satin.

For this challenge, we had $300 for our budget.

I was looking for very expensive fabrics

that could flutter and give me shine for the runway.

Or gold...gold?

My color palette ended up being chiffon,

embellished chiffon, with the gold paillettes.

I also found crinkle silk chiffon

and some pleated tulle.

This is not the jersey I want. This is the jersey I want.

[Kara J.] Are these the chiffons?

This one was difficult, because I didn't--

I didn't know where to start from.

I hadn't quite really worked out my fabrics.

I'm very simple, my designs are always simple.

I'm with you, I'm with you.

Then that's you.

I just want this trip to be

successful for all of you.

[upbeat music playing]

Your look is sporty, is it not?

-I know. -[Chloe] I don't think

it's too sporty, I'll be honest.

But, I mean, throwing a racer back on an evening gown?

[Daniel V.] I love it.

[Kara J.] You do?

I say stick with it.

You do?

-[Chloe] I say it's up to you. -You like it?

[Kara J.] Evening wear is definitely not my forte.

It's not my niche at all.

This is amazing stuff.

[Santino] Yeah, it's a good find.

When Kara gives me a compliment now,

I just say thank you and I put my head back down.

I just keep working.

It's about our own individual vision,

not about, you know, helping out someone else.

[Kara J.] Sounds like trees rustling.

Although it's a competition

and we all want to get to the end of the race,

we're kind of really helping each other out.

But Santino hasn't said a word to anyone today.

[Chloe] Can you believe it?

After tomorrow, one of us gonna have to go.

Final decision.

Watch, I'm gonna get kicked out.

[Chloe] No!

That's what's the only thing going through my head.

-[Chloe] Really? -Yeah.

[Chloe] So, but why do you say

you gonna be kicked out?

[Daniel V.] Why wouldn't it be me?

[Kara J.] Why would it be you?

[Santino] Well, Auf Wiedersehen.

That's so rude.

[Daniel V.] Santino is very arrogant.

He should have gone home in the last challenge.

I just think that a little more credit

should've been given to Nick.

He was a good designer.

[upbeat music playing]

-I can see it in the fabric. -Good.

I've worked hard to get here, and...

I wanna win.

I wanna show amazing clothes.

[Santino] It's really unfortunate

how fickle Nick became with me.

I heard Nick say, like,

"Well, at least my garment's not taped together,"

or whatever. It's just like, dude, whatever.

And what's happening with her sleeve

over here on her left?

Is this part of the design,

or is it simply falling off?

Everybody's [bleep] garment was [bleep] off.

-[Daniel V.] No, it wasn't. -Yeah, it was.

-[Daniel V.] No, it wasn't. -Yeah, it was.

So what the [bleep], dude?

I thought mine was way better, regardless.

I mean, I---I just think you're really lucky

that they have bad eyesight, that's all.

Dude, I mean, whatever.

[Daniel V.] To say that he's

sending out great quality stuff,

um, when it's falling apart before our eyes,

is just so sad to me.

You're not going to trip over the fact

that you can't send a garment out sewn?

Whatever. It's--it's--

[Heidi] Coming up on Project Runway...

I want it so bad right now.

I'm still questioning if I want it.

[Santino] What?

I have a big surprise.

[Santino] Last night with Daniel,

I'm like, dude, you're not making me feel guilty.

[Daniel V.] Santino, he just seemed

a bit like a one-trick pony.

Hopefully the judges

will look more closely at this final challenge

to see who is going to the top three.

[Santino] Today is the second day of work

on the evening gown challenge.

I just need to do my best.

Hi, everybody.

What's the matter?

[Kara J.] I've been battling with this racer back.

This is the fit thus far.

This back is more expected,

-in some ways. -Well, that's why I thought

the racer back is a nice

sort of twist on an evening gown.

I felt a little nervous,

um, going forward into this challenge.

Because it had a lot of repercussions.

Um, too safe is not good.

In a business like this, you have to be a little risqué.

-So... -Um...

You've-you're working on the halter?

Yes.

It's kind of Marlene Dietrich right now.

Exactly, and I don't want it to look period.

-No. -I don't want it to--

I want it to be modern and sharp.

I want to bring this band around here.

Yes.

I think that's an important design element.

-Agreed. -All right, let's fix it now.

[Daniel V.] I don't want to make Rebecca look too old.

Sophistication can be had for a 20-year-old.

But it also can be had for a 50-year-old.

Okay, Chloe.

What is happening with this skirt?

Is it going to have more body, more volume?

Or am I looking at it?

You're looking at it.

It looks like a bathing suit with kind of

a towel wrapped around it or something.

Mm, that's not good.

Are you responding positively to the seam being here?

I actually had it low before, then I had it higher.

I mean, I'm just gonna be honest with you.

It bothers me. There's something about it

that I just find...

-[Chloe] Odd? -Odd.

-Beautiful. -Thanks.

I do.

I was the only one that didn't have any silk charmeuse.

I used a, like, a stretch silk satin.

It's completely different

from what everyone else is doing.

And different is better.

what you're doing for just a minute

For the last 24 hours,

you have all been designing

an evening gown that represents the collection

you would show on the runway

at Bryant Park for Olympus Fashion Week.

-Yeah. -You will continue to do that.

But I have a big surprise.

It involves

a supermodel among supermodels.

-[Chloe] Wow. -[Tim] It's Iman.

Oh, my God!

[designers gasping and laughing]

Iman will be our guest judge.

[designers] Oh. My. God.

[Tim] She will wear

the winning evening gown on the red carpet

at a big event.

[Kara J.] She's an icon. It's just incredible

to know that one of the garments

can be seen on the red carpet.

I love Iman.

I'm really excited,

and I feel like

the color and the direction that I'm going

is something that Iman would love to wear

on the red carpet.

I can't wait to hear her talk.

I love her voice.

I think all of us would [bleep] a brick if--

if we win this one.

Not only the fact that it would get us

to Olympus Fashion Week,

but someone of Iman's caliber, of--of her beauty,

would be wearing a garment that we made.

All of a sudden, I just got nervous.

[Daniel V.] I want it so bad right now.

Jump-start our careers, start our lives.

that she doesn't want to be as big

as this fame could kind of ultimately catapult her to.

I pretty much moved to New York when I was 20.

I worked really hard.

The one reason I moved back

to Houston, Texas is because

I wanted to have a balanced life.

[Chloe] This whole time I'm thinking, okay,

go to Olympus Week, I'll make it to final three.

But now that I'm so close to it,

it's kinda freaking me out.

Folks, we haven't seen one of these in years.

that on sheer difference and risk-taking,

Santino's was extremely overdesigned.

One thing I know, I know gowns and proportions.

So I'm gonna stick to my instinct.

we go out on strong pieces that we're happy with.

The Beauty of Color.

Iman has agreed to wear the winning dress

to a red carpet event.

We will be scoring your designs as they come down the runway.

One of you will be named the winner,

and one of you...

will be out.

Let's start the show.

[Kara J.] When I saw Eden come down the runway,

I thought she looked very beautiful.

And it would be amazing to see me in the final three.

[upbeat music playing]

[Santino] I thought it looked so different

from everyone else's

that they couldn't deny me

one of the spots in the final three.

[upbeat music playing]

[Chloe] I thought my gown on Grace looks pretty good,

but again I saw all the little puckering.

And the sewing's not as good as it used to be.

I wasn't confident.

[upbeat music playing]

[Daniel V.] When Rebecca came down the runway,

I thought she looked amazing.

She looked gorgeous.

The dress flowed as if it was one piece.

I was proud of myself.

[tense music playing]

[Heidi] We scored your designs.

All right, we're gonna start with Kara.

First, and this is just me,

I would steam it.

So that was very distracting to me.

The other thing is that

it feels like you ran out of fabric.

The length, you know, it's, like, skimpy.

-[Michael] I thought the same. -Yeah, it was too skimpy.

Too narrow.

[Nina] From where I am,

I can see there's a few threads hanging from that hem,

and that hem is not even.

[Michael] You lost the elegance.

Did you make the dress you're wearing?

Yes.

It's a hell of a lot more interesting than that.

It's got energy and attitude.

Well, I love to create my own prints.

[Michael] So why haven't we seen them?

Um, I really wanted to show you my blank canvas.

What would make me think

that you're not going to have a boring show

come New York Fashion Week?

I would just trust me

to really show you, it's just, like,

bam--you'd be like, bam.

But here was your opportunity.

This was it.

Daniel.

[Iman] What was your inspiration?

[Daniel V.] To kind of encompass everything that I am,

as a designer.

Very clean, sophisticated.

I was hoping to see something

that was different.

Do you know what I mean?

[Daniel V.] I don't have a problem

creating a beautiful dress.

I can do that with my eyes closed.

It's creating that one thing

that makes you say wow.

It is beautifully made, yes.

But how do I know that

when you present

in New York Fashion Week

it won't be boring?

Do you consider this boring?

I consider this safe and boring.

Monsieur Santino.

What were you thinking when you designed this?

[Santino] I made up a little story

about a very talented, brilliant designer who

is taken hostage to only produce beautiful gowns

for a very young, talented, ambitious--

Diva.

Diva, yeah.

Out of all these,

this is definitely the most editorial.

However, creativity is fantastic.

But there is a point

where it becomes a joke.

It needs to be elegant. It cannot be--

If it looks elegant and it has a craziness to it,

it still is wearable, because it's elegant.

Listen, I understand the "bad boy" thing.

I got it.

But it's almost like

you're saying to us, "I'm smarter than all of you.

"I know you're all gonna say there's too much [bleep]

all over this dress,

but I'm gonna do it anyway and prove my point."

Chloe, tell us a little bit about your design.

My feel was 1940s, ladylike, but modernize it a little bit.

So your inspiration was 1940s?

Yeah, but more modern, yeah.

I love the old, like--

[Iman] Hollywood glamour, so to speak?

[Chloe] Yeah, but sleek, 'cause I'm petite.

So I kinda like sleek lines.

[Michael] You had a little problem

with the sewing on this.

It's a little puckery.

It's a little less meticulous than usual for you.

I think those darts look very

dress-makery.

You're about wearability.

But that still doesn't give me the handle

on what is the Chloe statement.

Definitive point of view helps.

And that's what makes one designer different than another.

[Michael] Gotta tell you,

it's a little underwhelming.

[Heidi] What I wanna know from you,

Chloe, is if you deserve to go

to Olympus Fashion Week,

who doesn't?

[tense music playing]

[Chloe] Santino, I think he's a genius.

He doesn't seem to sew as well.

Just construction-wise,

-I just don't think-- -Oh, my God.

it's up to par.

[Heidi] Santino?

I would say that

Daniel and Kara...

are both very creative people.

I'm not wowed by

people who are basically, like,

maybe brilliant pattern makers, but not necessarily

brilliant designers.

I would take Kara and Daniel.

[Heidi] Daniel?

I know that Chloe

has an established business.

Um, I just think that

to use Fashion Week as a catalyst would be

a bit more beneficial for us.

I guess that's the only reason why I would say Chloe.

[Heidi] Kara?

There's two very classical

designers to my right.

There's one very extravagant man to my left.

I'd say take Santino with me.

And take Daniel.

So Chloe's the one

you choose to be out?

[quietly] Yeah.

[Heidi] What do you think about that, Chloe?

How much do you wanna be one of the three designers

to go to Olympus Fashion Week?

If I didn't want it, I wouldn't be here.

It was agony.

There was so much to do,

so much work, and no sleep.

So I do want it.

Badly. Otherwise, I wouldn't be here.

All right, we heard what you had to say.

We're gonna have a little chat.

And I'm gonna call you back onto the runway.

On the runway, when everyone was picking me to go home,

I felt back-stabbed.

I'll be honest, it hurt,

especially coming from Kara and Daniel V.

Now, we are, as you always say,

-a little bit underwhelmed, no? -Yeah.

For the final outfit,

it was a bit boring.

When you ask them, here's your moment to shine,

this is the end?

And the dresses turned out to be

what I call sort of "templates".

You know what I mean?

-You'd have to add to... -[Iman] Yes.

...or fix them.

I agree, 'cause that's exactly how I felt.

How about Chloe?

The butt didn't fit at all.

That's why she turned around really quickly.

It was very loosey goosey around the back.

[Nina] Well, Michael said that.

[Michael] Chloe could've done a better job

with the fabric.

She had a hard time

sewing this one today.

As beautiful as it was, it's a Carolina Herrera.

[Michael] I don't think she's

necessarily stepping outside of the box.

Then we have Santino,

who always has one

of the biggest point of views.

Oh, it's definitely not boring.

I mean, this is like an expl*si*n

in a sequin factory.

Belly Dancer Gone Wild.

It was at least the most fun to watch--

Oh, he turns the volume up, like--

-[Iman] Absolutely. -It's very editorial.

It would be a beautiful cover.

There are times that I will choose a designer

that has really such

a great dress that might not

be completely me.

But I--but I think that that's--that's in me.

There's real talent there.

It just has to be corralled but not crushed.

Kara.

Kara always has lots of explanations.

But then somehow the garment is just...

never quite right.

[Nina] They're not memorable--

[Michael] Except for the mistakes.

She described herself as, you know--

she does textile design--

well, I never got that from--

Printing color? We haven't seen anything printed.

We haven't seen any--I don't--

I--why wouldn't I have noticed this?

Is this a hidden Pucci? I had no idea.

I've got a tension headache from hell.

[Heidi] Daniel.

He's very simple. Uh-huh.

But it's a beautiful color, navy.

[Michael] For a simple dress,

it was made well, fit well.

But is the idea of feeling that the whole outfit

is really saying something.

That they should have a point of view

and not be scared of having a point of view.

It didn't tell me a lot about him

-as a designer. -[Heidi] Right.

[tense music playing]

All right.

Let's bring back the designers.

And what we find is a black dress

that is poorly made.

We question if you have the passion
