for Olympus Fashion Week.

and the next few months

to do your collection at home.

a mentorship with the Banana Republic design team,

a year of representation from Designers Management Agency,

a 2007 Saturn Sky Roadster...

[Daniel V.] I don't think it's really, truly spoken to me

how big this opportunity is.

I'm so grateful for- for this chance.

[upbeat music playing]

[Tim] I'm traveling to check on the collections

of our three finalists.

First up, I'm going to visit Santino Rice,

who's been working on his collection in Los Angeles.

[knocks on door]

[laughs]

-Oh. -Santino.

-Tim. -Can you believe this?

-It's good to see ya. -It's good to see you too.

Oh, my God.

It's surreal seeing Tim again.

Right when I came home, I--

There was a period of time where I couldn't believe

that I'd just...done the show.

Right now, I'm renting a house in Hollywood.

And that's where I have my studio set up.

All right, let's look at the clo--at the collection.

Okay.

[Tim] So Santino, what's the theme of the collection?

[Santino] '40s glamour, Hollywood boudoir...

publicity stills.

This piece is almost pretty fully realized.

-[Tim] It's beautiful. -I had it sunburst pleated.

I get a little bit of a rock and roll feel

-in a way from it, you know? -Yeah.

[Tim] Well, you're taking a risk with this too, which I applaud.

-But--yeah. -It's not safe.

This is a work in progress.

So, um, just trying to mix this vintage feel

with something more contemporary as well.

Right. And that's the challenge.

I'm totally disarmed by this dress.

It's still you, but it has a refinement

that, frankly, I didn't see from you in the show.

[laughing] Well, that's good.

No, you took me to another dimension of you.

That's good.

I wish I was further along.

[Tim] You know, I have to tell you,

I'm really pleased with where you are.

I--I'm freaking out, really.

-Yeah, okay. -I mean, I'm--I wish--

You got a lot of work to do, but you know what you're doing.

Right, right.

You know, I've just recently quit my job

designing for my friend's label.

As far as, you know, my finances are concerned,

I'm broke.

It's scary.

I wanted to bring Tim to Venice Beach

because it's a place where I spent a lot of time.

So you were here for two and a half years?

-Yeah. -And you were--

Did you stay in the same place?

Um, no, I moved around quite a bit.

It was difficult to move here from Missouri...

um, all by myself.

I grew up in Saint Charles, a relatively small town.

My mother was a school teacher,

and my father was a disabled veteran.

I grew up with a lot of adversity a lot of people

that didn't understand me.

All my life, I knew I wanted to be a fashion designer.

I sacrificed quite a lot.

You withstood a tremendous amount,

-because you have to do this. -Right.

A few years back, I had designed a line

which fell apart and basically left me

pretty much homeless.

[Tim] So you had this really hard time.

Yeah. [laughing]

That--I definitely, just I was--

I was embarrassed about my situation, you know?

And I, and--

And really, in this-- in this life, you know,

you--you need help.

I come across as arrogant.

But I feel...

major insecurity.

If you think you have something to say about the way I look

or what I do or--

or what I say or what my voice sounds like

or any of that, like, you--

you can't imagine that I've--I've--

I've thought it, and I've thought it, you know,

ten times, you know, more in-depth

than you have, you know?

My friend Tony and his wife, they were worried about me.

And they--they, um,

asked me if--if, uh, I'd like to stay with them,

and--and, you know, be able to save up money.

-That's wonderful. -Be able to, like, you know...

So they understood, and they wanted to help.

Yeah, yeah.

It's a tribute to you, to your character.

And I have to say, it's also a tribute to your good friends.

[Santino] Yeah.

[Tim] Wow, look at that sunset.

[Santino] Another thing I wanted to do was

bring Tim to my friend Tony's house.

[knocking at door]

-[Santino] Hey. -Hi.

-How you doing? -Hey.

-How you doing, dog? -I'm good, man.

[Santino] Tony's my best friend.

He knows me the best.

He's an accomplished model

and accomplished photographer.

Tony's an awesome individual.

These guys are my family.

So you guys, I wanted to, um...

share with you some news.

I made it to the final three designers on Project Runway.

-I'll be doing my own-- -Dude!

What the [bleep], man!

[laughter]

[Tony] Sorry about that.

[Tim] Thrilling though, isn't it?

-It's really exciting. -I can't believe it.

I wouldn't be here, um,

if--if it wasn't for your guys' hospitality, you know?

-And your friendship. -[Tony] Whatever, dude.

you helped me out when I--

I needed it the most, you know?

So...

I don't know if I could ever repay him.

I'm gonna keep living my dream.

for myself and--and for--

for my friends and the people around me.

I see people give up their dreams every day...

and I'm not ever gonna do that.

[Tim] Next up, I'll visit Daniel Vosovic...

who's been working on his collection in New York City.

-Tim! -[Tim] How are ya?

-I'm fine, how are you? -I'm just great, thanks.

I'm glad you made it all the way up here.

-I did indeed. -You didn't get shot

-or anything? -Hey, you look terrific.

Thank you. Got a little haircut.

-Yeah. -Come on in, come on in.

-Thanks for letting me come. -Yeah.

Having as many weeks as I've had

to prepare this collection

that I've had time to sort through the doubts

push away all the--[bleep]

and I'm left with just solid gold.

Everything was spawned between this fusion of

this military influence and Japanese culture.

So, um--

-This is a beautiful detail. -Thank you.

-This is actually -That's wonderful.

reoccurring throughout, um, the collection

in different ways in pants, um...

and everything.

So this is this kind of flop collared jacket.

This is more of what it's going to look like.

-[Tim] That jacket? -[Daniel V.] Yes.

[Tim] All right, I can see it now.

You can see here, um--

God, this is beautiful.

Love it.

-This back is wonderful. -And the fact is, like...

a woman could literally put a blazer on over this...

-Uh-hmm. -...and wear it fine.

[Tim] I guess one of the things I wanna say--

The easy part is steps one through nine out of ten.

-Exactly. -The hardest is what happens

-between nine and ten. -That last--

And buttons and those details--

Those decisions can make it or break it for you.

Exactly, and that's-- that's where I'm at right now.

The biggest challenge that I have right now is that

a lot of those nit-picking details have to be decided.

[Tim] I mean, I think that there's

really something very special

-very unique about this. -Do you?

-Yeah, and I have to say-- -'Cause that's the whole point

-of this. -I think there's an element

of risk in this that I want you to have.

I don't want it to be safe.

-Neither do I. -No.

-[Tim] Push the risk factor. -[Daniel V.] Okay.

Then that answers that.

How do you feel about coming shopping with me?

I would like to pick up a new jacket.

[Tim] Oh, great. Let's go shopping.

-So let's go downtown. -I love the city.

[Daniel V.] Designers don't always look their best.

We put so much into making other people look good.

So I want to take Tim to go shopping

and maybe get a new outfit for the, uh, finale show.

I'd love to find a new fitted-- I need a slim blazer.

I'm extremely excited about Fashion Week.

It's been a long time coming.

I grew up in Michigan in a very, very small town.

And it's hard to--

to be an individual, and I think

every g*y man can feel that--that--the pressure

of being different.

For me personally, to be a designer...

you're labeled a f*g.

Fortunately, I have the best family.

My mother and my father were very supportive and encouraging

about me coming out.

And I finally just said to myself...

when you stop worrying

about all the things that you can't control...

you then can then focus on...

just who you are and what you love to do.

And that's made me a better designer.

See, I like the fit of this.

[Tim] I really have to say

I think this look

is very appropriate for the occasion.

-I'll get this. -[Tim] Okay.

At this point in my life...

I love my life right now, and...

I just think this is the beginning.

Bottom line, I think this is the beginning.

[Tim] And finally, I'll visit Chloe Dao

as she works on her collection in Houston, Texas.

-Hello! -Chloe!

-Hi Tim. -I'm so excited to see you.

-Hello, I'm Tim Gunn. -This is my mom.

Lovely to meet you. Thank you for letting us come.

[Chloe] I was so excited to see Tim.

Honestly, I'm so excited.

I mean, he's such an amazing person.

Can you take me on a little tour?

-Yes, definitely. -Great.

Well, this is, um...

I guess a little painting of my sister and I.

There's all eight of us, eight girls.

-You have seven sisters? -Uh-huh.

I have seven sisters, so there's eight girls.

And that's why my store's called Lot 8.

Are all of you living in the Houston area?

All in Houston, Texas.

-That's great. -Can you believe it?

We wanted to take this picture

when we were all in our 30s.

[Tim] You're gorgeous, all of you.

[Chloe] Thirty nine to thirty, right there.

So...that was, like, last year.

-[Tim] That's great. -This is a baby picture of me

I guess when I was in my-- at the refugee camp.

I was born in Park Laos.

When the whole Vietnam w*r was starting...

I guess my family knew before it actually started

that we needed just get out of there, get out of Laos.

My mom actually hired some people to, like...

take us through the night through the village

and to the beach or something.

But we got caught by the Laos police.

And then so we were in, like, family prison.

We were actually, we were in a family prison

for a few years in Laos.

And we eventually got to United States.

And we flew over and, you know...

stayed with my uncle in Dallas.

We had it so very lucky.

Imagine eight girls and mom and dad--

we all got here all safe.

-Well, that's wonderful. -Yeah. It's amazing.

We had a lot of cavities, but that was it.

[laughter]

Well, should we go to the workroom?

-Sure. Let's go. -Great.

So...

I wanna hear what you've been doing.

I wanna hear about the whole concept of the collection.

I don't know if I have a real concept, I'll be honest.

I've been thinking about it, thinking about it.

But I'm the kind of designer that doesn't, like...

think of a theme.

I kind of think about my customer

-and what they need this season. -[Tim] Okay.

[Chloe] My collection...

I'll be honest, it's, like,

not completely done in my head yet.

But it's the way I work.

I'm still very confident that it's gonna be

one of the best work that I've ever done.

This collection is definitely--

I know--I thought about the visual aspect of it.

And I think once I have the styling and everything together

I think it could be pretty strong.

[Tim] Well, for me, this is about the print.

-[Chloe] It is. -[Tim] All right.

[Chloe] Yeah.

-Mm-hmm. -And do you have sketches--

I don't do sketches. I know.

So how is this developing?

It's just organically, honestly, I'm just going through

feeling if I did this piece, what's next should I do.

[Tim] How about your fabrics?

I'm--They're right here.

This is part of this too.

-[Tim] This is part of it? -Mm-hmm.

All right, what's in your head? I want to know.

What's in my head? I don't know, honestly.

It's just slowly--It has to develop piece by piece.

He was concerned that I didn't have sketches

for him to see the complete

theme or idea of the collection, which I don't blame him.

I would be concerned too in that position.

I want to encourage you to just start

working with these fabrics.

[Chloe] No, no, I'm gonna-- Yeah, actually I'm gonna drape.

-[Tim] Okay. -[Chloe] Then I'll see.

And I have dedicated so much damn time to this collection.

I started as soon as we got our money.

And I'm still sewing. And I'm still not finished.

I find it a little amusing

how I used to sneak into Fashion Week, um...

a few years ago, and then...

now I'm actually showing in the tents.

And hopefully, people will be trying to sneak into my show.

doesn't really, uh, care for me too much.

Part of the time I say, screw you, you don't really know me.

But then it still hurts, you know?

How fast did the time go?

It felt like it took a long time, and then--

Yeah, my first reaction was

[Santino] It's been hard.

If there's a lesson I've definitely learned, it's that

I definitely think twice before I say something...

about someone I don't know.

Everything comes off as, like...

really, like, I'm like a crazy egomaniac.

I mean, you did say, day one, "This is the Santino show".

I'm like, ooh! You know?

I only said that as, like, a friggin' joke.

No, but you said something to me--

you actually said, "You're just a pattern maker."

I'm not wowed by people who are basically, like...

maybe brilliant pattern makers, but not necessarily

brilliant designers.

I said what I said in the moment...

but it looked so mean and bad.

I mean, that's great you're saying that now, but...

during the show I don't think you were coming off that way.

Right, yeah.

[Daniel V.] I know you've gotten the [bleep] end of the deal

well, granted, you made your bed, lie in it, so.

[Chloe] Yeah. Bottom line.

[Daniel V.] I think it's been quite a sobering experience

for Santino whether it's short-term or long-term...

if this will affect him for the rest of his life.

Uh, I guess we'll all have to wait and see.

And I kept thinking to myself, like, don't turn around.

This is a really

simple, you know... but it's totally elegant.

And the fullness of the skirt is really dramatic.

but it's not simple to make.

It's beautifully, beautifully done.

It's incredibly impressive, and you should feel very proud.

And this goes underneath it. It's very simple.

Just a little bit of the gold's gonna show when it wraps over.

This is very pretty though too, all on its own.

I know, it's so simple.

When Tim visited me, I had pretty much nothing.

But I just seriously

didn't leave the garage for, like, two months.

I just worked. I worked and I work.

And I think I, you know, I did a pretty good job.

This is a fairly simple silhouette, but the way

in which you're innovating with the construction

is really brilliant.

with the challenges and all the time that we've spent together

And I was able to explain to him briefly

what I was looking for.

A lot of bounce. Nothing too stiff.

[Chloe] The fabric is actually really strong and structured,

so I want the hair really soft.

My collection, I had a pretty specific idea

of how my hair should be.

Pouf it a little more.

-A young sophistication. -Right.

In regards to the hair...

I wanted to keep it very, very young.

that I'm slightly nervous

about finishing everything on my to-do list.

A lot of my stuff is still raw-edged.

You add all of those little things up.

It can seem a little daunting.

It's just those damn details.

Daniel has a lot of finishing, a lot of hems...

and a lot of sewing linings in, and buttonholes.

That stuff takes time.

'cause all the other designers' models didn't show up.

And I fitted five of them.

but that's just the way it goes.

I can sleep when I'm dead.

I had alterations to do.

In two days, I have to have stuff ready.

The three of you emerged from a very select group

owing to your creativity, your technical skill,

and your ability to improvise.

You are going to need

to draw upon all of those abilities,

because we have one final surprise.

you have one more final look that you have to create.

And that look will have to be shown

on your final runway show.

[Daniel V.] It was a ball of emotions, to say the least.

I really just wanted to punch someone.

what garment can we do that will sort of seamlessly

work itself into the collection.

This is definitely where I want to go.

We gotta do something that

is not gonna take us forever.

Well, I could make another gold.

[Chloe] I really didn't wanna do it

'cause I felt like all my creative juice was gone.

But based on that challenge,

I said I need a baby doll dress.

Because I need another young, happy, easy, flirty dress.

On the waist, I want really high up

and really full, yeah.
