Project runway is the chance of a lifetime.

They saw that you would have a good product.

Whereas, like, had carmen even finished...

It still wasn't good, you know?

[Sweet p] it's really sad carmen left, for sure.

But it's a little more comfortable

With three people in there.

And, um...better her than me.

Project runway should have a perfume.

[Laughs]

And yeah, exactly.

Before we talk about the next challenge,

Let's bring out the winning and losing designers' models.

Because you worked with male models in the last challenge,

We have two losing designers'

Models.

Marion's model, cheron,

And carmen's model, anna lita.

Jack.

You were the winner of the last challenge.

Your model was christina.

If you decide to stay with her,

Cheron and anna lita will be out.

If you decide to swap,

I will bring out all the models for you to choose from.

What do you want to do?

I would like to swap.

[Ricky] I was a little pissed.

I was like, you know,

Okay, up in the workroom, tim is waiting for you.

And he's not alone.

There's a familiar face with him.

And she has brought

Some old friends with her...

To help deliver your challenge.

Immediately, I thought, okay

We're gonna make some clothes for senior citizens.

Okay. I'll see you on the runway.

[Jack] we walk into the workroom, and there's nina.

Standing there next to tim.

[Steven chuckling]

[Chris] on the table, there are 12 photographs

Of really hideous fashion trends.

And we're all wondering what the heck

Was going on.

Designers, I want to welcome a familiar face.

Our very own nina garcia.

[Nina] hi, guys.

Elle magazine has been photographing

The evolution of trends for decades now.

Like heidi would say, some trends are in,

Some trends are out.

And these are definitely out.

[Laughter]

[Jillian] ironically, I was wearing overalls

So I'm like,

Am I completely dated by wearing them?

[Tim] before we tell you about your

Challenge, we want

Each of you to select one of these trends.

All right, let's see who's going first.

First up is...jack.

[Jack] those trends are outdated for a reason.

They're all awful.

I'm gonna take pleather.

So I just picked britney spears on crack.

[Tim] all right, next is victorya.

[Victorya] underwear as outerwear.

Christian.

Okay.

Zoot suit.

[Tim] rami.

I would like poodle skirt.

[Tim] kit.

Fringe.

Now we have elisa.

Jillian.

[Rami laughing]

I would like to bring overalls back.

[Laughter]

-Why? -Look how you're dressed.

[Laughter]

[Tim] and now we have ricky.

I'll take neon.

Kevin.

'70S flare.

John travolta.

Chris.

Joan crawford it is.

-[Laughter] -steve.

There is no way that I can make a baggy sweater work,

So I'm taking dancewear.

Why am I always last?

I'm like, is my button

Just stuck to the bottom of that bag on purpose?

I will pick a baggy sweater.

Fantastic.

[Tim] all right, so let's hear about your challenge.

Nina?

For this challenge,

You will be working in teams of three.

Each team must create a collection of three looks

That incorporates all three outdated trends.

[Christian] we're basically recreating a trend,

Which kind of made me nauseous,

Because all the trends are so exaggerated.

So I was like, oh, my gosh, I'm gonna die.

[Nina] the collection must be cohesive and relevant

For today.

All right?

We're going to let you

Select your teams.

[Kevin] we have to choose our teams of three

And now it gets a little more complicated.

[Tim] when I say go,

You'll have one minute to do that.

All right.

Go.

[Chris] sweet p and steven and I

Were kinda looking at each other,

And we held our pictures out

And looked at 'em, and we went, hmm.

[Victorya] I immediately looked to the group

And knew precisely who I needed to work with,

Based strictly on their trends.

[Kit] I knew I wanted to work with christian and jack

Because they're both so much fun.

And that's why I'm here.

[Rami] jillian was standing next to me,

And we looked at each other.

Instantly we just knew.

And then she said to me, "how about kevin?"

So it was perfect.

[Tim] okay, time's up, all right.

You have your teams.

Each team has a budget of $225

And two days to complete this challenge.

You will have an hour to sketch,

After which we're going shopping.

And during that hour,

I want each team to select a leader.

Nina, thank you so much.

[Nina] oh, thank you, tim.

And designers, I look forward

To seeing you on the runway.

All right, your hour starts now.

We're supposed to pick the team leader.

[Sweet p] I think you should be.

[Chris] sweet p and steven pointed at me

And said, "well, you're obviously gonna be

Our project leader."

And I was like, okay.

[Laughing]

How about...

Each of us draw

Each one of the three things?

[Steven] there was no way to put shoulder pads

With a baggy sweater and dancewear,

So we're doing our own individual looks.

And it's tied together through color

And silhouette.

Okay, that sounds good.

[Rami] you are very '70s to me.

So you have that down.

And you do wear overalls, obviously.

We decided that I would be the team leader.

Our trends that we selected

Are overalls, poodle skirt, and '70s flare.

Maybe the poodle skirt element comes in

At a high, dramatic neck.

We decided to incorporate all three trends

In all three looks.

I don't wanna be leader. I'm done.

I don't care. Ricky, do you feel--

-I'll be the leader. -Okay.

Just, I mean, you're the mediator,

I'll be the leader.

I'll just make sure we're, like, on task.

Our three trends are underwear as outerwear,

Neon, and cut outs.

You'll tell me what you think about your palette,

She'll tell me how she thinks we can do cut outs,

And I'll say how we can do it.

Okay?

I've not worked with victorya much.

She seems a little bossy.

[Elisa] like a bustier over a corsety kind of thing.

Just focus on cut outs.

So I offered to be the leader,

Just because I think if she were the leader,

There would be so much micromanaging,

That we wouldn't get to our destination.

[Kit] I think the pleather and the fringe

-Is an accessory. -Yeah.

The trends that we chose

Were pleather, zoot suit, and fringe.

We decided for me to be the team leader.

To make our collection cohesive,

I think we have to incorporate all three trends

Into each of our outfits.

And that's what we're doing.

Yeah, I do like that,

That our fringe isn't really fringe.

-I like that. -I like that too.

[Tim] design teams, time's up.

We're going shopping.

Let's go.

[Man] get out of the way!

-That's fierce. -Fierce.

[Laughter]

[Christian] our team is pretty fierce.

So I just called everyone team star,

Because team star is, like, hot, like star, like celebrity.

Let's make it fabulous.

That is pretty. It looks very vintage.

It is. That's what I had in mind.

This is good.

For hot colors, duchess satin.

[Ricky] I said, you know what,

We need to do this in duchess satin.

Because the color's gonna look amazing in it,

And it's just gonna look sharp.

And it's gonna look fresh.

That's gorgeous!

I absolutely love that one. Can we get it?

-He doesn't like it. -He doesn't?

Sweet p, answer me!

What?

How much money have you spent?

I don't think we need to worry about it right now.

Everybody, you have to be at the register.

We're going to head back to parsons now.

I'm just gonna do a little cap sleeve.

-[Christian] mm-hmm. -But see, if I do fringe,

It's gonna look like armpit hair.

-Yeah. -[Laughter]

-[Jack] look like what? -Armpit hair!

This is why I had this idea of having just your sweater...

Sweet p is making this fantastic sack dress.

And steven is making one of those kind of, like,

Wrap dresses.

I'm making this kind of short jacket

Over a long dress.

I have an idea about them each having, like,

Three braided ponytails.

A lot of people have me in a pigeonhole.

You know, "there's chris with a 10-foot wig,

"And a big, giant costume

Made out of, like, 200 yards of fabric."

But as the group leader,

I feel like I finally got a chance

To show that I can design anything

Just as good as anybody else in the room.

[Steven] ooh, what you got going on there, twirly girly?

Twirly girly, I've got me a jacket.

With flying arms.

Sweet, merciful crap.

[Steven] chris keeps on telling me,

"Girl, this jacket's gonna be hot.

Don't worry about it."

Okay.

[Elisa] I would like it-- just a real quick breakdown

Of how to make a great shape.

[Victorya] okay.

[Ricky] like, in your language, sculpt the fabric.

Thank you, yeah. Sculpt the fabric to fit.

-Got it. -Mm-hmm.

I'm trying to speak to elisa

In a way that I think that she would understand it.

Always start with my center.

There you go. Put your pin there.

[Blows out] I can understand that.

I was a dancer.

And when you're a modern dancer,

And you have teachers that are, like,

They seem like they're high on pot,

And they speak to you in this--

And it's the same language.

"Feel the crease, and breathe,

And feel your pelvis."

-Like, naturally-- -but like--

You always wanna have your center.

-And what is all my work about? -There you go!

About the center. La la la.

[Ricky] I think I was making sense to her.

[Christian laughing] all right, b*tch, can you just

Make a [bleep] dress?!

[Jillian] I'm working on overalls.

Kevin's look is very high-waisted

Hot shorts.

And rami's look is a denim dress.

-It's gonna be beautiful. -It's awesome.

I worked with rami previously,

And we worked beautifully together.

But I don't know exactly what kevin's capable of.

I'm getting concerned here.

I feel like it needs to be, like, shaped

In--on the form properly.

[Kevin] it was a really complicated pattern

To figure out.

And jillian was worried, like, if we should change everything.

It's just very crucial that you get

A very flat, perfect shape on the body.

I am the team leader.

I am ultimately responsible

For the results of what comes out of this.

So if kevin doesn't move, at, like, the speed of light,

We're gonna be in huge trouble.

[Sweet p] come on, you guys, let's go.

[Heidi] coming up on project runway...

We don't have time to cut it again.

And i, in fact, wanted to ask you

Why you wanted to be team leader.

She didn't have the ba*ls to be the leader.

[Christian humming]

[Kit] we have two days for this challenge.

The goal is for each team to blend

Each of their three trends

Into three looks that are cohesive and modern.

[Chris] look, kit, it's the shoulder pad challenge.

[Laughter]

[Christian] the trends that we chose were so crazy.

We're all toning it down.

But it's hard.

[Steven as tim gunn] designers, I'm afraid

I'm here to tell you that

-You're screwed. -[Laughter]

There is nothing you can do to fix

What you're working on.

-[Laughter] -carry on.

[Laughter]

Do you think I should just do the darts as a line,

Or should I go ahead and do the whole triangle?

-Just the line. -Just the line.

-Yep. -In the little stitch that you like.

-Yep. -Yes.

I don't like to be a bossy cow,

But I have, like, serious ideas about fashion.

My team has the cut out trend,

The neon trend,

And the underwear as outwear trend.

We're all going off this sort of color-blocked idea.

And we wanted to incorporate all three trends

Into each look.

The way that the colors are separated,

To me, it has-- has more of a--

A lingerie feel.

[Ricky] victorya comes over to my table,

Looking at my garment and saying, "you know what?

"Maybe the pleats should be like this,

And maybe it should be like this."

And it kinda threw me back.

I personally would just like it clean,

'Cause then it looks more blocked.

[Ricky] victorya needs to get on task, doing her own thing.

And if she doesn't, we're gonna be in trouble.

[Tim] designers,

In the spirit of wanting to help you succeed,

I'm sending in your models.

You will have 30 minutes with them to fit.

Okay, I'm sending them in now.

It looks so cute.

It looks really good together, I think.

-[Chris] wow! -[Steven] whoa.

We had our models put on as much as we had done.

And had 'em stand together

To look at cohesiveness.

Do you wanna know the only thing really bumming my eye out?

What?

-The color of that charmeuse. -Really?

[Sweet p] I think chris's outfit

And my outfit look really good together.

But steve's garment just is not cohesive,

So I'm like, [bleep], man.

Okay. [Sighs]

All that extra that you added for the pleating

Is just disappearing.

I just don't know how the whole thing

Went, like, from okay to not.

Because she's different measurements

Than what we thought.

Apparently, the model was close to jillian's size,

So we fit it on jillian, we get to the model,

The model's too big for them.

We don't have time to cut it again.

I did exactly what I was supposed to do, so...

So it just started to get frustrating, just in general.

I'll just recut it, extend it out.

This is god-awful.

[Victorya] when jacqueline tried on the garment,

It looked like something

A harlequin would wear to festivale.

I decided, because it looked so blaringly awful,

That the design needed to change.

Everything will be completely different tomorrow, don't worry.

I trust you.

-Okay. -Don't' worry.

[Ricky] how's it going?

I think it's okay. It's coming along.

[Ricky] when victorya's model comes in,

They talk about how they're gonna change the concept

Of her garment without asking me what I think.

The only thing I'm not crazy about

Is the crisscross.

'Cause there's so many lines already.

I don't know, I'm liking the crisscross.

[Ricky] with her doing her own thing

And giving what I say no consideration,

It's really hard to make sure that it's cohesive

And still looking like we're a group.

I kinda feel like we're in trouble.

I think that kevin should be further along than he is.

It makes me nervous.

We have only two hours left,

And I don't even know if we're gonna have any time tomorrow.

Soon as he gets back, this has to be finished.

It just has to.

[Rami] when you're a designer

And there are other people working under you,

You have to push them to finish.

I really didn't want to see miscalculation of time

Kind of ruin the vision of this collection.

[Sewing machine buzzes]

Hi, everybody.

How are you guys?

[Kit] we're good, we think.

-We love it. -Talk to me.

[Kit] so we had pleather, fringe, and zoot suit.

And so this fabric is our zoot suit.

We tried to represent the pinstripe.

And then fringe, we used upholstery fringe.

It looks very modern. Yeah, thank you.

[Christian] thanks, tim. Love ya, bye.

[Sweet p] how do you think they look together?

[Tim] I'm not certain.

Because we're looking for cohesion.

I don't see it.

I'd think again about that jacket

Because you have sleeveless happening here too.

Also, this looks so much more modern without the jacket.

Right.

All right?

[Steven] at this point,

There's not a whole lot that can be done.

I just have to pray that the judges get it.

[Tim] how's team jillian?

-We're doing okay. -Yeah?

Um, I see

-The same person wearing it. -It's jillian.

And you know who it is?

That's why they felt comfortable having me as the team leader.

Because it does feel very much

Like my style.

You have a lot of work to do.

What do you think first?

It's not looking very well finished.

It's not looking very refined.

And that concerns me.

[Victorya] you know, if it were

A perfect world, I think I would've tweaked

The silhouettes a little bit.

Part of the challenge was to do a mini group,

And to have cohesion among the three--

Three designs.

[Ricky] I mean, and I hear what you're saying,

-But I also-- -can I finish?

Yeah, go ahead, sorry.

You know, I had these two designs in mind,

And I think I also convinced

These two to jump on board,

'Cause maybe I was so excited about it.

But still, they're your designs.

Well, yeah.

So it's your concept,

Ricky's the team leader.

-Yeah. -I'm confused.

But I'll leave it to you all to figure out.

Just make sure it's cohesive.

[Ricky] when tim comes to visit,

Victorya is firing these statements,

"These are my concepts,"

And, "in a perfect world, they would be more like this."

And it just threw me for a loop.

I wanna make sure that the cohesion is working.

And today you changed your design.

You weren't sharing with me what you were doing.

Because I felt like it really did have to go

Into a certain direction.

'Cause there were design elements

That were clearly wrong.

-To you. -Yeah!

Sometimes it's better not to fight about it

And to go with it.

You know, I don't believe that.

I will never send something down the runway

That I don't believe wholeheartedly in.

And i, in fact, wanted to ask you

Why you wanted to be team leader.

Well--that's-- no, w-w-w-wait.

If you feel like you've been the team leader the whole time

Why don't you just take team leader thing?

No, because I didn't take it.

I-i liked the fact that someone else

Stepped up to the plate.

But I expected that person

To fulfill those responsibilities.

[Ricky] in general, victorya's very passive aggressive.

I honestly think she wanted to be the leader,

But she didn't have the ba*ls to be the leader.

And say, "when are you gonna be done?

What are you doing now?"

I don't think I should have to breathe down anybody's neck.

We agree to disagree on that one, how is that?

And it's okay.

Jillian just feels differently about leading a team,

And I cannot argue with that.

That's just her opinion.

I don't know how to satisfy everybody at this point,

You know what I mean?

Today I was so disappointed,

Because I felt like every single detail,

You couldn't make a decision on.

I was happy with my decisions.

You were so worried about what I was doing

That you had to do your outfit twice.

[Ricky] this challenge is a disaster.

The collection doesn't look like a cohesive line.

And maybe we're [bleep]ed.

I stand by what I said.

But I'm a little concerned.

I feel like there is a conflict of communication

Between ricky and victorya.

And our collection is not pulling it all together.

And I kind of wish

That chris was more concerned about it.

[Ricky] I approached victorya

As she's fitting her bodice.

And I notice right away that it's just wrong.

I personally like things, I guess, on the runway

To be super flat,

Because I'm used to seeing that

On other runway collections.

Do you-- you don't mind?

[Ricky] I'm a lingerie designer.

And I think she knows this.

So it was really insulting for her to tell me,

"N-n-n-no, I like it this way."

I'm just trying to make it look...

And I don't think that smashing her boobs

Is a polished look.

It feels better, right?

It does? Okay.

I mean, it just feels comfortable right now.

I let him pin it, and then sort of after a couple minutes--

And this always happens to me--

I let that sort of sit in my head,

And I felt, wow, that looks really good.

[Jillian] keep it up and pretty

Just so that it offsets the hugeness of the skirt.

We'd like sleeked all the way back.

Something really amazing looking.

And I was totally grateful to kevin.

[Jillian] our trends that we selected

Are overalls, poodle skirt, and '70s flare.

We decided to incorporate all three trends

Into all three looks.

And I think that

We really made something amazing come together.

[Kevin] you're always concerned about

Certain, like, little gimmicks that you put on the clothing.

I see amanda coming down the runway,

And I'm just like, yeah.

Rock it out. It was, like, awesome.

[Rami] the collection in general was very strong,

Very polished, very clean.

So I was very happy with it. I was very proud.

[Chris] these trends are shoulder pads,

Baggy sweater, and dancewear.

We decided to keep single silhouettes

With our trends.

And I thought that each one of us

Was represented as a designer.

[Sweet p] I am so happy with my dress.

The whole silhouette is exactly what I pictured in my mind.

It was just rad.

[Steven] the whole collection did seem a little fragmented.

It seemed very separated.

[Christian] the trends that we chose

Were pleather, zoot suit, and fringe.

Our collection is very cohesive.

And I think our collection is the strongest.

[Jack] I actually thought it looked great.

Like, we all had our individual sense of style,

But it was cohesive.

[Kit] I got a little bit nervous.

I was concerned that our fabrics

Were a little bit muted

Once they were on the runway.

[Ricky] our three trends are

Underwear as outerwear, neon,

And cut outs.

Tell us a little bit about your collection.

Our, um, outdated trends were

Baggy sweater, dancewear, and shoulder pads.

[Donna] as a designer,

For me it's very important that there is a cohesiveness.

But it's also up to the independence of you two

To work together cohesively.

"We" not "me."

These are three girls from three different fashion shows.

[Heidi] what do you think about steve's outfit?

I don't see movement.

I don't see her liquidity.

I don't see her dancing.

[Nina] I would have never guessed

This was a dance inspiration, to be honest with you.

[Heidi] what about sweet p's?

[Donna] I have to say,

I love your dress.

I think it is wonderful.

I would've liked it a little bit more exaggerated

From my point of view.

But I do love the dress.

[Michael] I totally agree with donna.

I think that it looks modern,

And I think that you interpreted the trend.

Nina, what did you think of chris's outfit?

Your outfit

Still looks a little dated.

Like a new take on shoulder pads.

But in camel.

[Donna] the totality of the garment

Is not holding together.

It's not flowing.

I had an idea for the short jacket that would

Play with the proportion of shoulder pads.

And try to make it updated.

[Nina] these big shoulder pads look awkward.

It just doesn't feel

How could you be a leader

If you can't lead yourself?

[Heidi] ricky, you are the team leader.

Please tell us about your trends.

Our trends were

Underwear as outerwear, neon, and cutouts.

[Nina] I do get your design,

And I do like what you guys came up

Conceptually.

But I have a problem with the way

It's constructed and fitted.

As far as the shift dress

With the diamond cutouts,

I like the concept a lot.

Um, it looks modern.

Victorya,

I think the fit is excellent.

To take a straight fabric and get it to fit

Is not an easy project.

[Victorya] my dress, actually,

I fit it on my model this morning,

And ricky was right there.

And he actually was the one that suggested that

The curve of the hips should go out.

[Nina] ricky, I'm just surprised that

Your outfit looks

Most poorly constructed.

I'm coming from the last challenge,

Where you showed me something

That had pins and needles still on it.

[Ricky] I felt that by helping

My two teammates,

Yeah, my work suffered, but...

In support of ricky, I will say because I am

A sculptor, ricky took time out to show me

How to drape so that the satin would work

Because I've never worked

In a non-stretch fabric.

Who picked this fabric?

I did, and that was my decision,

Because I said, "you know what? Let's go there."

You picked one of the most impossible fabrics.

I think you threw yourself as a team leader

Into a terrible disadvantage.

Victorya, what did you think of ricky's leadership?

Um, I felt that I was assuming

A lot of responsibility.

And completely, the first two looks,

I think I had a very, very heavy hand

In both those looks.

Does that tell you how--

How he was as a leader?

You talk more about yourself right now.

So you overrode his leadership, basically.

Um, the thing is is that I can't help but to say what I think.

But I expect that sort of counterweight

As well, to my opinions.

So he rolled over?

Any respect for me.

I was the most shocked when I saw his outfit.

And that's so interesting,

Because as an intimate designer,

He really does understand the body.

I was particularly disappointed,

Because I was expecting something

To be meticulous, perfect.

[Michael] I don't know, maybe he ended up

Spending so much time on the other two

Helping them, but of course, victorya's saying

That, you know, she was a big part of his garment.

I was surprised with her personality.

It was almost like,

"I was the leader, not ricky."

She should've been a team player.

They had issues, and they

Obviously had issues as a team

Working together.

Let's go to chris's team next.

His collection was...

The two things that we told him was make it relevant

And make it cohesive.

And on those two things, they were out.

From a leadership point of view,

That is where chris went wrong.

That was the one that really didn't relate

At all to the two other ones.

[Donna] the jacket just--

It was almost on a hanger.

Not on a body.

It had no body relationship.

Yeah, I mean, it didn't fit,

It was old fashioned.

The fabric was ugly.

It was very bad pageant, mother of the bride.

Just old fashioned.

That's a big problem.
