Midgets or oompa-loomps.

And they're all pretty short.

Designers, as you can see,

You have new models for this challenge.

These young ladies

Are from st. John vianney high school

In new jersey.

And you will be making...

A prom dress for them.

[Laughter]

[Christian] the other designers actually seemed

To be kind of excited.

But I think prom's horrible and tacky and gross.

These ladies had a chance

To have a little look at your portfolios.

And they have made some decisions

On who they would like to work with.

[Laughter]

I don't know what the poor girl

Who chose me must have been thinking,

Because my portfolio

Is full of crazy stuff.

Where you will have a budget of $250.

And you have all day tomorrow.

No, this is my first time.

And I'm so excited.

[Chris] we all knew that eventually

There would be an evening wear challenge.

I don't think we thought it would be

On 16- and 17-year-old girls.

You have to re-gear your thinking.

Low-cut in front, or low in back?

Both.

So why'd you pick me?

You're very edgy.

We got a chance to look at your portfolio,

And you were very my style.

We have to consider that they are younger,

And I definitely think

The dresses should be more modest.

I like this cutting right there.

You know, it's tight right there.

That'll--that'll make your figure look really good.

I come from new jersey,

So I know that whole jersey high school thing.

And prom in new jersey is, uh, basically

Everyone goes tanning.

[Laughs]

Everyone basically steals booze from their parents.

So it just freaks me out

To see these kids are so young,

And they're, like, about to engage in the prom.

And hope none of the parents are watching this.

But I'm sorry. I will--

I will put a chastity belt inside of my garment.

We have a good start here.

I just wanna get your body type down.

Would you prefer something that is more fitted,

Or drapey?

Um, I can go either.

Most times something fitted.

Bianca does not like things that are too traditional.

Which is perfect.

A fun color, I think, is very important.

So I want to kind of get an understanding

Of, like, why you thought we could work together.

Um, well actually, I got the last choice.

But like, so the low back, kinda like makes it look nice.

I'm kind of scared of that, because...

This is not her wedding day.

Hopefully she's not even gonna lose her virginity.

Um, I've been doing fashion design for two years.

Oh, really? Awesome.

I met my fabulous client, maddie.

First thing she told me was that she's a designer.

What if we did-- this would all be lace.

Hmm...i know this is gonna sound difficult,

But like a little train coming out here.

These are good pleats.

[Christian] you know, she's so cute,

But she has some strong opinions.

She got that pencil right out

And started sketching on my paper.

And I was like, "oh, okay!"

Okay, so what colors do you like?

[Maddie] so light brown

And maybe gold?

For some reason, I wanted lace in the back.

Okay...you don't want to put too much stuff.

-I know you do. -[Maddie laughing]

She wanted so much tacky stuff.

She wanted gold and black and white and lace

And...ugh.

Now once I start, no more changing.

I was very scared.

And I find this beautiful champagney charmeuse.

[Christian] I just think that there's so many things

In this challenge that are important.

We have to make it fit.

Pick fabric that'll go for a prom.

We have to satisfy the customer.

I've never worked with somebody that had that many

Specific requests.

I am not feeling fierce right now.

We're making pretty dresses.

Is it just me,

Or is my hair bigger than usual?

[Christian] pretty tina turner today.

It's a little bigger than usual.

Pretty tina.

I never made a prom dress before.

But I make a lot of dresses.

And I want to make something that's kind of like a mosaic.

The silks that I chose will look like the inside

Of a jewelry box.

I just want her to look really pretty.

The prom queen?

You can be the queen, and I'll be the king.

Queen and kit will be--

I'm the king,

And christian's the queen.

My senior prom was fun.

I was a prom princess.

And funnily enough,

My date was a prom prince.

It was very orange county.

The dress I want to make for brie

Is definitely unconventional.

But I still want it to be pretty.

The night that I'm making this dress,

Most of my thoughts are in the dress.

But I'm also thinking about my mom.

She was a seamstress when we were kids.

She made all my sisters' prom dresses,

And she was self-taught.

By watching her, I learned about

The technique of it.

As a kid, we were poor.

You weren't allowed to be creative.

'Cause it wasn't gainful employment.

You couldn't pay the rent.

If you win something like project runway,

So I changed gears.

I did my interpretation of what she wanted.

And it's very intricate

And very detailed, which is very me.

I'm gonna try my best

To make something that I love,

Even if it's not exactly what she wanted.

My biggest fear is that she walks in

And is like, "blue?

I never asked for blue."

It really looked like something

An italian older divorcee would wear.

I kind of made the executive decision

To change the silhouette.

I felt a bit nervous that she wouldn't like it.

But at the end of the day, I decided

To go with what I wanted.

I just want to cry.

I love the dress.

She looks so pretty.

And I am so happy.

[Victorya] I'm happy with the dress.

It's something that I definitely think

That I would wear.

That I'm happy to see jess in.

She was adorable.

[Chris] I think my prom dress--

It's glamorous, and it's just what my girl wanted.

It's not that crazy out of the box or anything.

But I did it really well.

I loved it.

[Kevin] I kind of took a chance on this one.

I was very daring.

I thought it was great for tizi.

It was a well-made dress.

Yeah, this is exactly what I wanted.

The choice of the color, I think, is really good.

Is really very nice, you know, on her skin.

Overall, I think it's a pretty dress.

It's a little sophisticated

For a 17-year-old.

I guess it's my point of view.

[Nina] yeah, but the fabric is very beautiful.

It's very pretty.

And as far as it being adult,

Well, let's be honest.

I mean, look what hollywood at 18 is.

I-i think overall,

It's really done well, it's very flattering on her.

Tizi walked in, and I saw

That she was, um, she was filipino.

And I wanted to do something

That would complement her skin color.

So I automatically thought of red.

[Nina] I am not crazy about that color at all.

She looks much older than her 17 years.

The dress, to begin with,

Is not really young-looking.

Is adding to the kind of matronliness of it.

And the other thing is, I am distracted

By the hemming.

It looks cheap to me.

I think that it was the girl that she wanted

To project herself to be for prom night.

I think that it's chic

And young at the same time.

She looks like she's gonna have a good time in that.

Tell us about your prom dress.

I will just be honest. It was very hard.

She's very--

She's very opinionated.

I actually like the dress. I like the color.

And I love the work that you've done on it.

Gilles, what do you think?

There's definitely a conflict between both of them

That really reflects already,

You know, in the results.

It definitely is very labored.

Uh, there's a lot of work.

Somehow, definitely,

It doesn't for me totally relate

With the lady who's wearing it.

[Nina] I do agree with gilles.

You have a lot of ruffles and you have a lot of lace.

Which is exactly what she loves.

I wanted, like, a little lace here.

Lace here. Lace there.

And she wanted

This whole front to be

Completely rhinestone and jeweled, the whole thing.

I think maddie

Is right in wanting everything she wants.

But you as a designer need to have

Some kind of finesse

And tact in how to deal with that.

I just don't like

The fact that you're blaming maddie for some

You know, I don't know. I don't like that.

With this dress as a designer?

It's me.

The girl inside me would wear this.

Perfect with your hat.

How do you feel?

I like it. I feel really good in it.

[Gilles] overall I think it's a cute dress.

Execution I have some--

Some issue at the bottom of the dress.

I just think that when it comes to the ruching,

It gets a little sloppy.

It--it doesn't look like it's meant to be that way.

When I saw it for the first time,

I thought it just washed her out completely.

Pretty,

But it's kind of boring, I thought.

[Michael] you needed to just

Take the volume dial

And go, "buzh."

You know what I mean?

The color volume up.

The drapery-- turn it up.

[Heidi] rami.

Tell us about your dress.

When I met bianca,

The first thing she emphasized was comfort

And something that is different.

It's really a draped c*ck dress.

That's what I chose.

The color choice,

It doesn't, to me,

Give me the idea of prom.

[Heidi] it looks too lady at lunch

To me, you know?

The length is like at the knee.

Mostly I think it's maybe

Too sophisticated for her.

May I respond to that?

Yeah.

My work is always sophisticated.

As a designer, this is my belief.

I think the most important thing is that I did not

Really give up too much of my vision.

Well, when I look at that dress,

She's a 35-year-old woman in new york going out to dinner.

Which is usually my customer.

It--it's old-fashioned. It just is.

We really only liked two this week, it seems like.

There was definitely something about the gown

That sweet p made.

First off, I think she finished it meticulously.

It fit her client very, very well.

It's not easy to make a simple dress

Like that--you know, sexy, but sort of elegant.

I liked it a lot.

And then there was victorya.

Really, really cute.

[Heidi] and it was really gutsy of her

To go with something that bright.

[Nina] it just looks like

What a modern prom dress should look like.

[Gilles] I think she looked so adorable,

And the whole package was right.

With the rest of the designers,

We had some problems.

For example,

Rami.

I think that the dress

Was beautifully draped.

But the color was old. You know?

[Heidi] well, also, then, his excuse is

"I don't work with young girls."

You know, the challenge is a prom dress.

He was just designing for rami.

And that's it.

Then you have someone like christian,

Who clearly had a battle with his model.

[Nina] I understand she was difficult.

And she had a personality.

But he cannot blame everything

On maddie.

I didn't appreciate that at all from christian.

I think he was working

Too hard on those details.

I feel the dress is

Way too worked.

I mean, it's just, like, all over the place to me.

Ricky.

I think it was such a non-event, that dress.

You know, the color washed her out totally.

I just think that, in a weird way,

He had all the good intentions.

But at the end, the drape

Was not very good.

It's, like, kind of like close but no cigar.

It's always the same. Every time.

That leaves us with kevin.

Cheap!

It just looked cheap.

I mean, I think she looked like, you know,

$29.95 prom.

You know, the dress didn't look rich, definitely.

And she looked older.

So much older than

Her 17 years.

It was of poor taste.

So we've made our decision?
