All of a sudden, we're going over the brooklyn bridge,

And that was really fabulous.

We're designing cement galoshes.

[Jillian] we end up at this pier

On the east river, overlooking manhattan.

We walk over to this garage,

And there's a woman standing there.

And we don't know who she is.

Designers, I want to introduce caroline calvin.

Senior vice president of design for levi's.

Good morning, designers.

-Good morning. -Good morning.

Behind this door,

You'll find the raw materials

For your challenge.

[Jillian] the garage door was raising pretty slowly,

And I don't even know if I want to know

What's on the other side of that door.

Fabulous, wow.

[Rami] the doors open,

And there are hundreds and hundreds

Of levi's jeans just hanging on clotheslines.

Inside this warehouse,

You'll find more than 500 pairs of 501s

In a variety of styles

And colors, as well as one-yard bolts of white cotton.

These are the raw materials for this challenge.

[Caroline] so designers,

Your challenge today

Is to create an iconic denim look of your choice

That captures the spirit of originality and creativity

That has lived in the heart of the levi's brand.

[Sweet p] I haven't worked with denim in a long time,

So I'm really excited.

[Tim] there are laundry bags inside

For each of you.

When I say go,

You'll have three minutes

To fit as much as you can

Into the laundry bags.

[Jillian] the jeans were hung

So far into the distance,

We were like, oh, [bleep],

Do we really have to run that whole way?

[Tim] all right.

You ready?

Go!

[Squeals]

We have to get our bags.

I lost a shoe.

I'm running super fast, and my shoe falls off.

It's so dirty in that place.

Do you see my foot?

[Rami] my strategy for the three minutes

Is to get all the dark pairs that I want,

Because I'm thinking to go for a dark look.

[Jillian] I grabbed jackets and jeans.

I ended up picking the lightest color that they have.

[Christian] so crazy.

[Chris] we all just started pulling down the jeans,

And the clothes pins were flying everywhere.

Honestly, I went for jackets

And I went for dark denim.

But then I just grabbed everything.

All right, one minute.

[Chris] are these somebody's?

Those are mine.

Um, I think they might be mine,

But yeah, I think they might be mine.

[Victorya] I will not lie.

I'm a pretty competitive person.

When you're grabbing everything you can,

You don't have time to stop and look.

Ooh, they're dirty.

Look at the filth.

Five seconds.

It's not fitting.

I need to get my shoe.

I knew your shoe was gonna come off.

There are a ton of notions from levi's, okay?

Ooh, these look kind of cute.

[Ricky] I think denim's fun to work with.

I make my hats sometimes out of denim.

I thought to myself, it needs to be

Something that no one else here can do.

I knew that no one could fit denim

Like I can fit it.

So I chose a corset,

Which again is an iconic piece.

[Jillian] I'm making a coat

That's kind of futuristic looking.

It has to be dramatic and interesting

And forward.

I used mostly the 501 jeans

And I'm using the labels as an epaulette

On the one shoulder.

It looks like jillian got the most stuff.

[Chris] I think rami got the most stuff.

He just grabbed whatever he wanted.

Greedy b*tch.

Greedy b*tch?

I was the one behind all of you guys.

I know, right?

[Rami] I'm not specifically

An american designer.

I was born in the city of jerusalem,

Living in a politically complicated environment

Where three major religions

Sort of mix and have conflict.

And because of lack of activities,

I gained a love for sketching and design,

And it was the perfect escape

At the age of five or six or seven.

Because I'm not from the united states,

My take is a little bit different.

It's a little bit more fashion forward, more edgy.

The skirt and the shirt that I'm making

Is going to show that levi's can be

A little bit more refined yet hip.

[Sweet p] mine are filthy.

You, like, rolled around on the floor, I think.

I know.

I'll just bang out the dirt.

My jeans are totally dirty that I got today,

'Cause like an idiot, I dropped 'em all on the ground.

[Chris] oh, really?

Is there a good way to get dirt out of this stuff?

I would wait

Until you're done,

And then I would, like,

Damp-cloth it.

[Christian] I wouldn't, I would wipe it

With a dry piece of denim.

[Chris] but then, if you wipe it

With a little bit of a damp cloth--

[Christian] no, lady.

Wipe it dry, or it'll seep into the denim

And you'll never get it out.

I don't know how many times you've been paid as a stylist.

Obviously I know more than you,

Since you're gonna wet denim.

It's so cute to see youth.

[Jillian] I think that christian's very talented,

And there's nothing wrong

With having a high level of confidence,

But I think that christian is very immature.

Deconstruct denim.

Make it your own.

Deconstruct, great.

Somebody needs to give him a bottle

And send him to bed.

[Laughs]

Like, what am I supposed to do with this?

I feel like I'm in first grade.

Please deconstruct.

Wow, I did that when I was in fashion school.

[Rami] christian is like a cartoon character.

There's so much yakking and bitching.

If I had hair on my head, I'd want to tear it out.

Oh, my god, I'm gonna die

Of barfness.

It's so disgusting.

My god, this is not how fashion is.

[Jillian] did you like doing denim?

[Victorya] it's interesting,

But I just couldn't do it every day.

My idea was to do a coat, a very classic trench.

One of the reasons why

I think I'm so into fashion

Is because my mother has always been

A source of inspiration for me.

When I was growing up, she always made

Everything I wanted.

I would sketch things,

And she would sew them up beautifully.

So I'd like to think that she'd be happy

Happy and proud if I make it to the finals.

Jillian's doing a jacket too.

I know, I heard her when she was saying it,

But I wasn't gonna change my concept.

Yeah.

Very true.

[Jillian] I didn't even realize it

Until, like, halfway through, I looked over

And I saw that she was also making a denim coat.

So I was like, wow, that's kind of crazy.

We just worked on the previous challenge together,

And I made that coat, and I didn't even know

She had any interest in coats.

It's just really annoying, actually.

[Heidi] coming up on project runway...

[Crying] I'm bleeding everywhere.

[Jillian] I feel like a mess.

[Groans]

Oh, no.

[Christian] I feel so manly working with denim.

It's like a macy's day parade up in here.

[Laughs]

[Christian] we were given this,

Like, levi's look book,

And inside this book was this denim trucker jacket,

And immediately when I heard the name,

Just like trucker jacket,

I instantly clicked with this edgy biker outfit

For a woman.

[Sweet p] denim's cool because it's easy to sew,

It's easy to cut, so I am making a wedding dress.

The wedding dress I wore was-- I don't want to say casual,

But it's not like a big satin dress

That looks like you're on a wedding cake.

Sage and I got married about a year ago.

For the last two years,

Sage has been supporting me financially.

I think my husband will be really proud

When he sees the dress.

Oh, my god, I like it.

[Christian] it's so quiet with everyone gone.

I know. It's kind of weird.

Everybody's gone.

There's not that many of us left.

I don't like it.

It's hard when some of your favorite people

Are just leaving.

I know, and some annoying people are still left,

God.

Blah.

The fact that ricky's here, I think is a joke,

Because I think he should have gone home instead of kit.

His work has been the same boring thing

Since day one.

I think he has no vision at all.

[Ricky] because I've been on the bottom so much,

I've been getting these looks,

Like I am so not worthy of being here.

I'm not the kind of person that has all-around fears

And me, me, me, but I think the designers don't know

That I have the experience I have.

I was an assistant designer for the valentino lingerie.

I worked with oscar de la renta.

I was the vp of design for the vera wang lingerie.

I know for a fact that I'm a great designer,

So I'm okay with that.

[Christian] probably.

We put on the dress and she just looks great,

So I feel really confident.

I'm still not sure I'll be in the top,

But I'm positive I'll be safe.

Because I actually made a jacket and a pair of jeans,

But I made it in a completely new way.

The bottom of the pants was actually

Out of the sleeve of a jacket.

Like I can't even stand it, I'm gonna die.

My only option is to glue the buttons onto my skirt

And I have to figure out a way to really get it all done.

[Chris] I'm really happy with my look.

I think it's just detailed enough.

It's well put together.

It's really pretty.

I think it's really neat. I love it.

[Ricky] when I see my garment, I enjoy it.

She looked like one of my sketches.

She looked like the girl in my head,

And it felt so good.

It felt amazing to see her like that.

[Sweet p] I love my final look.

It looked really clean and polished.

It didn't look hippie or woodstock at all.

[Victorya] jacqueline always does such a great job

Walking down the runway,

And I was working until the very last minute,

But I was relatively happy with the way that she looked.

[Rami] my finished garment looked so nice in my opinion.

I love it.

I really think it makes jeans look dressier

And more modern.

[Christian] my outfit's pretty fierce.

It's pretty amazing, what I did

With the two different types of garments that I made.

So I love it.

It was very innovative,

And it worked out really, really cool

And really hot.

[Jillian] I'm kind of happy with the look.

I think that I could have done

A whole lot more with it,

But I almost kind of liked it, actually.

I thought that there was potential in that coat.

We've scored your designs,

And we would like to talk to all of you.

Let's bring out your models.

[Heidi] christian, tell us about your look.

I wanted to create this kind of trucker, motorcycle

Kind of look.

For the jacket, I actually used

All 501 jeans, two different washes.

For the jean,

I actually used the trucker jacket

As the lengthening of the bottom of the jean.

[Caroline] the fact that you've taken a jacket

And made it into part of the jean,

That you took all the different elements of the 501,

That's very innovative, I like that.

Thank you.

I love the fact that you were inventive.

It's the motocross jean, you know.

Maybe that is the iconic element.

That's what I was going for.

I think they fit her really well.

They're not stretch.

Not at all.

They were hard to get on her, let me tell you.

I think you did a brilliant job tailoring it.

[Heidi] chris,

Tell us about your look.

My idea behind my look

Was to take the little black dress

And make a little blue dress.

[Nina] the little black dress is an iconic item.

What is an iconic item?

It has to look timeless.

And this item to me looks dated.

I think you have a start of a really great dress.

But it does look like two ideas

And that it's not quite yet finished.

When I saw her coming down the runway,

I noticed the threads straight away.

I kind of left it that way on purpose.

But to me, it's kind of like,

Why didn't he play with fraying all over the dress?

It looks a little home-sewn.

Rami, tell us about your denim look.

It's made out of pieces from three different pants

And parts of jacket, and I used a zipper trim

To sort of go all around the seams

To sort of outline certain areas.

In terms of originality and creativity,

I think it's great.

Thanks.

I think you had something there with these--

With these zippers, and I think

There's something to be said

For an idea that could be interpreted

Into separates or sportswear.

[Nina] I'm so happy

To see you work with another material.

I like the fact

That it's very sharp and it's very clean

And it's very well done.

Very sophisticated, as usual, coming from you.

[Ricky] I wanted to make a little c*ck dress.

Denim done up, you know?

And it says something about me.

That little b*tch in me.

It fits her like a glove.

I also love

The whole outfit; I love the hair.

I thought it was very sweet.

I think it's a 501 made into a fantastic dress.

I can see your craftsmanship.

It's just really cool.

I love amy winehouse,

And obviously

You must love amy winehouse too,

Since she's modeling today.

I think this is the first thing that I've seen from you

Where instead of me hearing that you work on lingerie,

And then I don't see

The results,

This is like a roller-coaster.

You don't know where to go.

You don't know if you suck,

I just took a lot of

Different pairs of jeans

And attached them to construct the shape,

And molded the top

And went for a free-flowing bottom.

I wanted to take that and bring it into the future.

I was a little surprised, jillian,

Especially coming off the last challenge,

Where you did this impeccable jacket.

Today, I'm not so much in love.

I think that it might be a case

That I was ambitious to make a coat

In a small period of time.

The red tabs, there's a little bit too many.

On one side, it's a little bit distracting.

It's overly-complicated.

You have some good ideas.

It's just that there's too many of them.

Okay.

I don't know. She looks bigger too, you know?

It's not very flattering on her.

I want to see the model look fabulous,

And she looks fabulous, but not in that.

Sweet p, tell us about your look.

I wanted to play with patchwork,

And it instantly took away

The hippy-dippiness of it.

I think it's super chic.

I actually took a jean jacket

That I had-- that was there,

You know, and I started to drape, like,

Conventional trench details, like a storm flap.

[Heidi] so in my eyes, it doesn't seem like then,

You didn't have that much to do.

You would think that there wasn't a lot of work involved,

But for some reason, I was still

Kind of in the sewing room,

Working away.

[Michael] well, I think the intention

To think about a trim little trench coat

Perhaps was a good idea, but I don't think

It made one garment.

The top of it

Literally looks like

Just a reconnoitered jean jacket.

And then I feel like the two things

Don't go together.

It looks like

A party skirt got glued onto your jean jacket.

It's almost like you were not inspired by this at all.

[Heidi] we've heard what you had to say.

We're gonna need some time to talk.

Whose did we like?

[Michael] um, I think that ricky's dress

Was very clever,

Using the button fly up the front of the dress.

[Nina] he really was very meticulous about his work.

The seaming was beautiful.

There was a confidence about his design.

[Michael] we keep saying to him,

Where's this lingerie experience?

The minute she turned the corner, I said, "uhh!

"There it is.

He's showing you the lingerie experience."

[Heidi] finally the ricky

That we've all been waiting for.

How did you all like christian's outfit?

He put a lot of details

That represented the 501, and he thought about,

It could be an iconic item.

And then also, it really fit with the concept

That he was coming up with.

He's the only one who sent out "a new jean."

I think a lot of people would be into that jean.

[Michael] sweet p, it was all about

Turning denim into a very elegant--

Real chic dress.

Chic and iconic kind of dress.

You could dress it up, you could dress it down.

I loved it.

Rami wasn't too bad either.

[Michael] I loved the zipper outlining.

Interestingly, you brought up,

Oh, my god, it's not jersey.

Denim's the opposite of jersey.

So who are our least favorites today?

[Caroline] she should have kept it simple.

She had some good ideas,

But she had some bad ideas too.

[Heidi] I mean, to have that much jean--

Fabric around your body.

I mean, you just look like a marshmallow.

Chris to me was very boring.

It had rough edges, but not rough enough.

[Caroline] so there was just something that was quite

Not finished, and it was like one approach

Or it's kind of like, which lane is he going down?

It looked dated to me.

You know very working girl, joan cusack in working girl.

[Nina] everybody's had fun with a project,

And I don't think she did, and it showed.

My biggest issue was that it looked like a jean jacket

That I already have, with a little skirt attached to it.

Maybe if she didn't have the jacket to start,

She could have got there.

I mean, it just made no sense at all.
