We have absolutely no idea where we're going with tim.

There's a lot of speculation going on.

We're going to the boogie down bronx.

This is a hip-hop challenge.

And I get really, really nervous.

Because the last thing I want to design

Is nurses uniforms or scrubs.

Although I could design a good straightjacket.

I usually do it--i would like to do it every other day.

That's a huge amount of time every other day.

You know, like, other people, like, go to the gym.

I go tanning.

I just wanna go tanning.

Please.

We turn the corner and we see the armory

Track and field center.

I'm getting nervous and excited at the same time,

Because it seems like it's going to be

A really different kind of challenge.



This place is ginormous!



Racing all around the ring.

Who is the person skating around a track?

Wow!

I was a fan of his from the winter olympic games.

The boy was hot.

He--he--he sold it.

Designers, I am thrilled to introduce

U.s. Olympian apolo ohno.

Five-time medal winner, two of them gold.

Hi, designers.



Apolo, do you wanna tell the designers

About their challenge?

Sure.

We wanna know what you'd do

When given the chance to create the look

For the u.s. Olympic team

For opening ceremonies of the summer games.

Okay.



For the olympic games at all.

I'm guessing somebody holds a flame

And runs around a track field.



There is both women's wear and menswear

In the opening ceremony.

But for the purposes of this challenge,

You will be designing women's wear only.

And, apolo, you've attended

Two opening ceremonies.

What are they like?

Well, it's basically, you know,

The olympians' version of the catwalk.

It's like--unlike anything I've ever experienced in my life.

You walk in with honor.

You know, you're representing your country.

It's something that is-- it's dear to my heart.



This is a rare opportunity for you to consider

How you would present the image of the united states

To the rest of the world.

Furthermore, you are following

In the footsteps of some very great names

Who designed for their countries.

Giorgio armani for italy.

And ralph lauren, who's designed the u.s. Look

For the 2008 summer games.

The olympics are humungous.

So big.

Thousands and millions and billions of people.

Heck, yeah, I'm going for the gold!

So to help you with your creative development,

We've arranged for a special surprise.

Apolo.

The armory is home to a fantastic museum

That will give you a great sense of the history of the olympics

And its fashion.

And you guys are gonna have it all to yourselves.



Afterwards, we'll head directly to mood,

Where you will each have a budget of $150 to shop.

And...

This isn't the last you'll see of apolo.

He's our guest judge for this challenge.

That's right.

You have no idea.

I've watched the opening ceremony

Of summer olympics probably since I was 12.

I think they're history-making,

And it's about conveying to the rest of the world

What the u.s. Is about.

For me, this could not be a better opportunity

To really show my sportswear background.

Is this the opening ceremony?

[Laughs] no.

I'm very much into the olympics.

I've seen the olympic games,

And they've worn suits, they've worn jogging pants.

They've worn some of everything.

And now I'm thinking classic americana sportswear.

Look at this.

Performing in fur?

Fashion.

I know what to do now.

All right, good.

I'm a true cave girl.

I like leather.

And I like fur.

I'm thinking bold, progressive,

Aerodynamic.

That's like gladiator.

I'm particularly inspired

By the little jogging suit.

I want to take a different era

And translate it into modern times.

I am instantly drawn to this one image in particular

Of all these olympians in these--these hats

And these blazers.

So I was really kind of inspired

To kind of interpret that for women.

-How are you doing? -I'm a little stumped as far as the ceremony goes.

I'm into high-end glamour.

This has nothing to do with what I'm really used to.

It's just all very confusing to me.

Okay, designers. Time's up.

Let the fashion games begin.





Just take this as an option.

I wanna go with some leather, some linen.

'Cause I'm trying to be a little different from everybody else.

They're looking at me like,

"You're gonna get kicked out for that leather."

But you know what? Don't worry about me.

Worry about the plaid you're picking up, okay?

That's perfect.

I know that I wanna work with a plaid.

And I just wanted to stay with white and blue.

Because it's just more tasteful to me.



Why, is that bad?

I'm not saying it's bad.

I'm just-- just inquiring.

You're using black?

I'm gonna use black,

And I'm gonna trim it with red, white, and blue.

I picked out a black stretch satin.

I was a little concerned with it.

But I can't help myself, you know.

Black is cool.

Let's go with a yard of this one.

Wait, that was mine.

Huh? What's that?

I had this one.

Is this the one you had?

Uh, I don't know.

I've been asking them to drop stuff.

But I grabbed this and put it on the table.

I look over, and keith has taken my fabric

And has already cut from it.

I was like, "oh, no, you di'n't."

I'm seeing signs of changes in people.

A sister gotta keep one eye open.

That's all I'm sayin'.

So we're talking about america

And how it's gonna be portrayed in the world.

So this is serious business here.

I never did school sports, but i--

Oh, wait, I did.

What'd you do, stella?

I took dance for, like, four years.

Modern.

I hate to admit it,

But I was a cheerleader.

But it was only because I was a gymnast

And a dancer.

-I played football. -Oh.

I knew right away that I was gonna do a skort.

A skort is a skirt short.

The front is a skirt, essentially,

And the back is shorts.

I definitely have an affinity to athletes.

My two daughters play softball.

And so I really wanna win this for them.

See, the thing is, right after freshman year,

Everybody grew and...

I couldn't play anymore.

And that's when I started sewing.

From football to sewing.

I hear you, man. Been there.

I played put-put.

I'm not really into anything with sports, to be honest.

I went to boarding school.

And I just think the uniforms

Make everyone look a bit generic.

I am catering towards a c*ck, more evening,

More fantasy look

From the '40s, and modernize it.

In tanning, I'm an olympic athlete.



Mm-hmm.

[Laughs]

You need to stop.

It's only goes to bronze medal.

[Laughter]

I'm beginning to, like, get paler and paler

And weaker and weaker,

And probably by the end of the season

I'm gonna be like...

Frail white.

You're sick.

Did you see the tanning booth today when we were passing by?

-Yeah, I did. -Did you cry?

I teared up a little bit.

I think he may be becoming tanorexic.

Luckily, he's got that amazingly blond, highlighted hair

That's keeping him alive.

But I'd still really love to see him

With some bronzer or something.

I was like, "oh, my gosh.

Look how pretty it is."

[Laughs]

What are you making?

Jacket, pants,

Vest.

I knew instantly

That I wanted to do some kind of corset, bustier.

Modernize the pants and create something really, really hot

For the present.

And I'm keeping it simple.

Something that america can be proud of.

A pants, skirt, vest, and jacket?

Pants, vest, shirt, and jacket.



[Laughter]

Wow.



Terry has just cranked out.

I think she's got a sweatshop

Hidden under her table or something.



As to which direction I should go.

The sporty tracksuit style or, you know,

More of my style,

Which, you know, is girly and feminine.

So I decided to stay true to my style.

And my design is three pieces.

It's a skirt, a little camisole,

And a sweater jacket.

So, stella, why are you making

Your garment all black?

Because it's, uh...

We're going through a depression.

No, because it's, uh, space age,

And it's modern.

I knew the black would be a risk,

But I didn't want to do anything soft looking.

An american athlete is a powerhouse.

They're gladiators.

They train a whole lifetime to get there.

And if they say anything about "biker,"

I'll be like, "there's a lot of bikers in this country

That watch the olympics."

[Laughter]

I don't think stella's design

Has anything to do with the olympic team.

To me, it looks like an outfit that one would wear

To a goth nightclub.

As a young kid, I always wanted to be

A part of the olympics.

I was a competitive gymnast at a super-young age.

And so I wanted something playful.

I came up with a really cool idea

Of pulling a silk with fleece.

Let me put this on you.

Let me see something.

[Laughs]

Yeah, but I have definition in my body.

[Gasps]

[Laughs]

My workspace is right behind daniel and kenley.

And they're constantly laughing,

Constantly making jokes.

And you get the sense that there really isn't

Any consideration for anybody else.

[Laughing]

Maybe if it's tacked down here.

[Kenley laughing]

That won't help.

"Ah ha ha ha hee hee ha ha!"

It's like, okay, just stop laughing.

Just, you know, laugh-- ha ha ha--done.

[Laughing]

She's just, "ca ca ca ca ca cah!" All the time.

Somebody get this girl a muzzle.

You don't want it to look too...

Nurse--nurse.

You know, like, all white.

I like the idea.

I'm gonna take a chance.

I've watched the olympics

When all the different countries come out.

And I always pick up on the teams that wore white.

They would just really...pop.

I'll make it work.

America to me is a place for second chances.

I was born in liberia, west africa,

In the city called monrovia.

In 1990, there was a civil w*r in our country,

And we were actually in exile.

We had to leave the country, or either stay

And possibly be ex*cuted,

And as women be r*ped and tortured.

It's one of those things that...

The pain of something like that never goes away.

It's like an open wound.

America's home for me now.

And that's what america means to me.

A place where I have this chance

To actually fulfill my dream.

A dream that I never gave up from high school.

A dream that my parents never let me give up

Or my friends or my husband.

And I believe this is my time.

Um, I had this idea of mixing the zipper.

Um, where, you know, I bought two different colors.

Actually, this has some wit about it.

Well, just kind of, like, athletic.

Well, that's the era, tim, with the cardigan.

No, it's not.

The beatles didn't happen in the '30s!

Like, I just don't do the beatles.

I mean, I liked across the universe,

And it was all beatles, but other people sang it.

So...maybe I like the beatles,

But a bit more... Progressive, into the now.

It's the united states

Presenting itself to the rest of the world.

So we don't look like a bunch of wallflowers.

But I'm looking at you right now,

And I'm seeing what I saw in you the last two challenges.

I feel like you begin to unravel.

Don't let that happen to you.

Reflects who I am as a designer.

I love structured pants.

I love detail on pants.

But still with a classic, funky touch,

Which is korto.

This garment has definitely got that dramatic effect

That I like to give.

It's a beautiful, beautiful skirt.

And it would be perfect for the olympic team.



It's maybe not 110% relevant to the olympics,

But she looks fabulous.

As I watched my garment go down the runway,

It definitely stands out amongst the sea

Of retro-inspired dresses.

I have a really good shot at winning.

I think that my garment

Fits the requirements of this challenge perfectly.

It's very patriotic.

It looks stunning on carolyn.



In the '40s.

I'm gonna definitely stand by my garment.

It's the chicest uniform they've ever seen.

I think my silhouette is really interesting.

I could have taken it a little bit more sporty,

But I think it turned out beautifully.

It's hot.

This outfit had to be slick and cool.

It represents the country in a bad-a*s way.

And, yeah, I'm diggin' it.

I felt really good about my garment.

'Cause I felt like I not only created sportswear,

But I used the color palate which was a given--

Red, white, and blue.

It's america. It's the olympics.

I'm feeling good.

She is beautiful.

And the jacket was so well-crafted.

I'm like, u.s.a., U.s.a.

When I see alex walking in my garment down the runway,

I feel that it represents america.

I'm definitely watching the judges' faces.

It seems like they like it.

Polina just looks great.

I think it's a very modern take of an olympic look.

It looks like she could be walking for opening ceremony.

It just looks so awesome.

As my garment's walking down the runway,

It looks really cute.

It's fashion forward.

And it looks like me as a designer.

So I'm really happy with it.

I would like to start with terri.

Tell us about your design.

Looking at the history of the olympics,

It was blazers, blazers, blazers.

I wanted to put a spin on it, and to me,

This is like a very american kind of look.

I love the colors that you used.

Um, I thought it kind of

Just really popped.

And I think it would read well.

It looks very american.

And, you know, that's important.

Kind of gives me

A little bit of a kind of

Lauren hutton '70s vibe,

Which I think is kind of great.

I say, you know, hurrah for american sportswear.

Thank you.

I love the fact that you offered versatility.

If this were to represent

The u.s. Olympic team,

They would look very smart and sharply dressed.

Jennifer, tell us about your olympic design.

We went to the track and field hall of fame,

And I noticed a small track suit

From the 1920s.

So I used that as inspiration.

And I wanted to do separates

So that they can go

Without the sweater if it's really hot.

Which it probably will be.

I have to say,

I don't read this as modern.

I just don't see olympic,

And I don't see america in it at all.



Strong, proud, and tall.

And we want to feel confident in what we're wearing.

I wasn't able to grasp that when I

Saw the--the design.

Okay.

Jennifer, I think it is hard for you

To separate the design challenge

From your personal taste,

Which is very feminine and very girly.

And this particular challenge,

Which had more of an athletic inspiration.

This is missing it completely.

She almost looks silly.

Joe.

Well, I wanted this garment to read

"Summer olympics, modern, u.s.a."

I mean, no doubt about it.

So i, um, decided to use

The "u.s.a." In a few key parts

Where you would see it.

I'm wondering, the zipper.

Does the zipper come red and blue like that?

-No, you have to get it-- -you did that?

I did that. I bought two zippers.

That is very clever.

Personally, I really liked it.

It shows off the woman's physique.

A lot of the women athletes and male athletes,

They have great bodies.

And there's no reason why they should be

Hiding behind anything.

I am very happy somebody thought

About including some athletic details

In this challenge.

I have to tell you

That a skort was a good idea.

But you have obviously a problem with the length.

But overall, I think it's really smart.

Very, very smart.

My look is very much inspired by the 1940s.

I wanted to modernize it,

So I looked at some of the more modern things

That were going on.

And I noticed very vibrant colors.

And I kind of took that element,

And fused the two together,

And I came up with this look.



There's just nothing athletic about it.



Having any relevance

With the challenge.

And how would we know this is the u.s. Olympic team?

With the striking blue and the striking red.

-Where's the blue? -This is blue.

[Laughing] there is no way this is blue.

Is your shirt blue too that you have on

Under your jacket?

No, this is purple.



That looks the same. You guys match.

The color's very saturated,

And, with all honesty,

It does change a bit in the light.

Maybe if you played with the colors a little bit.

I did initially.

I started doing a jacket.

It just ended up looking like wonder woman.

Listen, I think the color is the least of your problems.

I don't know where she's from.

I don't know--

She's from the republic of c*ck land?

I wanted to go with, like, an all-white look.

And then I wanted to use some leather,

I tried to keep it like sportswear of that time.

I made the hat to kind of, you know, shield from the sun.

I used, like, lightweight linen for the skirt.

It was like my interpretation.

It's definitely very unique.

I'm gonna take that as a compliment.

Just because it might be the only one.

But, for me, it didn't

Scream anything about athletics.
