How you doing?

Behind us are five saturn vue hybrids.



Are recyclable in today's environment.

So for this challenge,

You will be recycling these vehicles

To make an outfit of your choice.

What--[laughs]-- what is this challenge?

Because I don't have a blow torch,

I--i don't know.



Have stocked each hybrid

With loads of materials used to make these cars.

These will be the raw materials

For your designs.

This challenge, like the first challenge,

Is about innovation.

Frankly, for that first challenge,

Many of you did not rise to the occasion.

So this is a second chance to really wow the judges.

It does kind of give me like a little notion

That I wanna show him that I did learn from the first one,

And I'm actually gonna do something

A little bit more out there or innovative.

There are rolling carts and large bags

For each of you.

You'll have four minutes to load as much as you can

Into those.

Okay?

Chris, do you wanna do the honors?

Sound the alarms, go, go, go.

Because you have such a short amount of time

To get what you need to get.

The only thing that was in the car

Was things that cars are made out of:

Mats, seat covers.

What are we gonna make?

Here's all these seatbelts just wrapped up and stuff.

And they looked beautiful,

So I was already getting inspiration.



I mean, this is right up my alley.

The first thing I reached for

Were all these little dashboard applique things.

So instantly, I thought I was gonna go for

This futuristic bustier thing.

I grabbed a headlight, you know...

Maybe I'll work it into a brooch.

Designers, you have one minute!

Whoa, whoa.

I think I have some seat covers.

I have carburetors. I have lights.

I have so many whackadoodle things.

I don't know what I'm gonna do with this stuff.

Da-da-da-da.

I'm not even dealing with rushing around like a fool.

How embarrassing, like, rushing.

I'm not moving.

Designers, 30 seconds.

I don't think I could carry mine.

We're supposed to make an innovative

Design of our choice

Using these materials from the car.

And we had, like, literally two minutes

To intake what the challenge was

And then four minutes to grab it.

So knowing that we have time to sit and think,

Everybody's kind of trying to figure out their plan.

[Gasps] yes!

Cool.

Now, these are non-traditional fabrics,

And we're twisting them into garments.

So it feels great to have immunity.

At this point, it's just-- it's gold.

There's a lot of crashing going on right now

With, like, people throwing headlights on the ground,

Trying to get inside of stuff.

And tearing apart car seats.

So it's very experimental right now.

Trade somebody a carburetor for a light.

My biggest thing is I have to please those [bleep] judges

Or they'll send you home.

I'm sick of presenting these outfits that stand out so much,

And having them be so critical on me.

So I'm going to make sure whatever I do next

Is more tailored

And a little bit toned down.

These are heavy-duty materials.

So just trying to work with this stuff,

It's gonna be difficult.

I don't wanna make a leather dress

Because that's not that innovative.

But there's never really been an outfit

Where I haven't hammered, grommeted, pyramided.

I don't know. I'm a little confused.

Like, what am I gonna do?

I gotta let ideas come into my head.

I'm just in pain chopping at these things.

I am making a top out of a thick rubber floor mat.

So that's pretty whackadoodle.

The suede has cuts from breaking all the glass,

Which I'm now not using.

Blisters from using these giant scissors to cut

Rubber floor mat.

Here we go. This is blood for fashion.

And I'm bleeding it, baby.



Kenley, your model shannone

Has had to drop out of the competition.

I just wanted to collapse and give up.

It's really not my type of thing to do,

But it's-- could be very cute.

Step outside the box a little bit

And get eliminated.

[Giggles]

Everybody expected me

To do, like, these leather pants

Out of trash material.

But I'm doing something I haven't done before.

A skirt with tiers of seatbelt strap.

I want to just really do something pretty.

I'm going to do a one-shouldered dress

With fringe at the bottom.

Black and silver.

My favorite memory involving a car

Is when my father gave me my great uncle's



The sad thing is was my father passed away in '99,

So he's not able to be here with us.

I know he's watching me up above.

Love you, dad.

What are you making, keith?

Definitely something more heavily constructed.

I am using the tan leather pieces

To create a pencil skirt that is high-waisted

And kind of short.

I'm more worried about what the judges are going to think

Than what I'm going to design.

And that's not a comfortable position to be in as a designer.

I would think they would say show us something different.



You never know.

I kind of have an idea that I'm gonna do

Some kind of a weaving process with the seatbelt.

I want it to look really structured

And I'm going for a very day-to-day wearable

With a touch of avant garde.

I'm looking around at the other designers

And I see that most of them are using seatbelts.

But I didn't want to do that.

I knew everyone was gonna do it.

So I'm hoping the judges will see that I'm being

Very, very innovative.

What are you drawing--

A zebra print on there?

Yeah.

[Laughs]

That's hilarious.

You're drawing that?

Yeah.

That looks awesome.

Oh, thanks.

Well, I'm seeing something really pretty

In these materials that no one else saw.

I mean, I created a zebra print.

No one's gonna think those are air vents.

I'm doing this flowy, elegant gown

Out of all the seatbelts.

But all the machines are getting all screwed up

Because of the material that we're using.

And I'm trying to stitch it.

And there's just so many layers.

And I'm just getting frustrated.

Should have hand-stitched it.

It's just gonna be hard to get in the sewing machine.

I could re-execute

The whole thing to where it'd be easier.

You mean pull it apart?

Mm-hmm.

A lot of designers right now

Are talking about how difficult

The materials are to work with.

And I am whistlin' dixie.

I'm feelin really good about this.

The skirt's gonna look hot.

The top is innovative.

It's chic and it's elegant.

Well, that's sexy.

It looks like a dominatrix outfit right now.

No, it's not gonna snap at the crotch.



With a little bit of a different silhouette.

I'm doing the main part of the dress in the car seats.

And everybody has seatbelts.

So I want to make sure that I'm using them

Like nobody else is.

This is kind gonna look like planet of the apes, I think.

I'm gonna make this jacket,

And then I'm gonna put this hat on her,

And she'll really look like a planet of the ape girl.

Because I fit shannone perfectly

For a skirt.

'Cause I know her body so well by now.

My new model germaine has a completely different body.

She's completely flat and boxy,

Whereas shannone was very narrow and curvy.

So I have to change everything.

But look.

Put in a panel.

I am.

I have a lot of work to do.

[Laughing] you sound like tim.

I do!

Beware of the weight. It's heavy.

The first thing I do when katrina comes in,

I try the coat dress on.

And I love the way the different shades are coming up.

And I'm kind of excited.

And it's gonna be high-waisted.

And then I made this jacket.

In terms of real innovation,

It's not taking it far enough.

And I wanted to use them really differently.

So I was experimenting and creating

Ruffley fringe with them.

And really different and unexpected.

Tell me what you're doing.

Today, I'm working on

A kind of a panel effect here.

And I'm gonna turn it into a high-waisted skirt.

And I'm gonna corset it in the back

So I can cinch my model into it.

And then it'll have a super-tight fit.

So what's the top?

I've been playing with these things,

Because I thought they were so unconventional.

I figured if I could sew this up into, like,

A super-hot tank top...

I think the judges need to see from me

A refined palate.

Because I'm not afraid to push the envelope,

And they get that I have a strong point of view.

I just have to prove I'm clean,

Tight-fitting construction,

Which I thought I showed them in the olympic challenge.

And I'll show it to them again. That's no problem.

But you have to believe in it at the same time,

And it has to work.

Yep, yep.

I don't think tim saw as much innovation as he wanted.

But at the same time, I'm eager to impress the judges.

For the look of your choice.

To be innovative.

Okay, let's meet the judges.

First, we have top american designer michael kors.

Let's start the show.

I used the suede side of the leather,

And it's accented with black vinyl

And those cool little plasticky car innards.

I definitely feel as if I'm hitting innovation

Square in the nose with this one.

It's hot, it looks futuristic,

And beautiful.



And this interior stuff of the cushion

That I can't even, you know, describe.

I presented something

That doesn't look like it was made from a car,

And it's pretty well constructed.

And it has a point of view,

It's just not over the top.

I wanted to go for a harder edge

Using leather.

It looks so hardcore biker.

She looks beautiful.



A wearable outfit out of car parts.

The top is black patent leather.

And the skirt, it's made out of air filters.

I had to make some crazy adjustments,

And I actually made it work.

The dress looks incredible.

It's very sexy, polished and chic.

I am 100% happy with what I've done.

With all the changes I made.

I mean, all the blood, and sweat, and tears

Over this garment, it definitely shows.

I'm super happy with how this look turned out.

I've woven the seatbelts to make the jacket.

I really feel like I put so much work in this

To show who I am as a designer.

I love it.

It looks great.

My dress is seatbelts and broken glass

I took from all the mirrors.

I'm totally doing something different

Than I usually do.

I want to show versatility that I can design

Outside of blayne, which the judges talked about.

I think my design is innovative.

I believe that I've achieved

Like a motocross kind of dress.

I mean, I don't think anybody sent

Something like that down the runway.

My design is a skirt made out of the seatbelt straps

And a racing style vest.

I'm, like, stepping outside the box with this.

I don't know what they're gonna say,

But it's something I've never done or would do again,

But it looks really cool.

Okay, I would like to start with jerell.

Tell us a little bit about what you did

And what materials you used.

I was instantly drawn to these resin interior moldings.

I thought they were really kind of cool,

And they kind of lended themselves

To, like, this futuristic kind of thing,

So that's kind of what I ran with.

I think it's quite amazing, actually.

I mean, I love the tailoring.

I can't believe how intricate it is

Based on using these materials.

Thank you.

You really gave her a look.

And the styling, while over the top,

Is appropriate.



It's interesting to look at.

And it's actually wearable.

Thank you.

Blayne, tell us about your look.

When I opened the car, there was just piles

And piles and piles of seatbelts,

And already it was just draped beautifully,

So I was inspired.

And I used, like, the side mirrors of the car,

Just to smash up the glass

To add kind of this embellished feel.



But the fit at the top is distracting.



And I am never a car wash skirt or dress fan.

Okay.

I wish it had been either shorter

With the fringe,

Or it fit her maybe to the knee,

And then we saw a little bit of that.

Okay.

You know that's seven years no sex there, right?

-If you break the mirror. -[Laughter]

I'm not superstitious.

Korto.

Well, I decided to do a coat dress

Initially I had an idea

To start actually weaving, like, a belt,

But then I decided to go ahead

And just weave as many seatbelts

As I could steal from other people,

Plus what I had.

It looks like something I would make in regular fabric.

I have to agree with you.

I think it kind of worked out.

You did get some great shape to it,

And it's got kind of great volume.

I would walk out the door in that.

It's so chic I cannot believe that's from car parts.



I think you edited your process well.

There's kind of a restrained drama.

I constructed the bodice out of car seats.

I cut up little bits of the seatbelt,

And then I fringed them out.

I just played around with the shape quite a bit.

I think the silhouette's fabulous.

Can I see the back of it?

I love the proportion of it.

I love the way it's styled.

It's interesting, but it's chic.

And I think it's really crafted beautifully.

I am blown away.

You could go straight to paris with this dress.

I stepped outside of my comfort zone

Making something like this.

And I tried to make a sleeker form of a skirt.

I piped the vest with that same thing.

And that's what I did.



Just the overall silhouette.



To not go together

For me, the vest and the skirt.

Yeah, in a weird way the vest looks

More like your gig,

And then the skirt looks like

You trying to be ladylike,

And don't know if they actually mesh together.

This does look a little random.

The first thing I wanted to make sure to do was

Create something like looked nothing like

It could've been made from a car.

And so I made sure to kind of

Streamline things a little bit,

And just make it a little bit cleaner,

Having subtle details

That were still very innovative.

Can she turn around for me?

This is where it got confusing for me.

I can't tell where there's a hole there.

If it doesn't fit her, if it's not closed.

I was still making the top of the garment,

And I couldn't accompany her to hair and makeup.

And I guess she was forced to sit down,

And so the front of my whole garment split.

I tried to mend it as much as I could.

The thing that I don't like about it

Is that there's no concept.

There's no idea.

You should see my other stuff--sorry!

Excuse me?

I felt like when I took it

To an extreme in the last challenge

That there wasn't as much appreciation

As I like being a kind of edgy designer.

So...

I don't think that you should think

That we're trying to rein you in.

I think in this instance

You reined yourself in.

It's hard when you worked so hard on the last challenge,

And I was told it looked like a dowdy chicken.

There's criticism and then there's insults.

Guess what?

You're going out there in the public, okay?

Mm-hmm.

You're throwing yourself into a situation

That people are gonna comment.

Oh, yeah.

You might not love the comment.

You let it roll off your back,

And you get back to the next project.

I think that the two garments,

They were okay.

But the combination of the two together

The bottom definitely didn't relate to the top.

Too much for the eye. It didn't work.

We want something to come out and say, like,

"Wow, this is a great design."

Ruined my garment."
