My first thought about a fashion legend

Is mary kate olsen.

I want every challenge to be involved with mary kate.

I wanna marry mary kate.

It feels good to feel the sun.

I'm from around here,

And I know that we were in the meat packing district.

So then I'm thinking, "okay, the meat packing district

Has serious, major league designers there."

We arrive at this beautiful showroom,

And we're, like, "what is going on?"

It's project runway, so anything's possible.



'Cause the colors are beautiful, and I'm like,

"Okay, well, what are we gonna do exactly in here?"

Designers,

I got kind of teary-eyed,

Because this is the biggest opportunity

It was like a dream come true.

I mean, seriously, she is one of the living legends

Of fashion.

The magnificent diane von furstenberg.

Well, designers, I'm very happy

That you're here today.

And I have a great, great challenge for you.

Today, I will be asking you

To create a look for my fall collection

Inspired by the movie foreign affair.

The character is marlene dietrich,

Who I think is the most glamorous woman in the world.

And she is a singer, a performer,

Or maybe she's a spy.

She starts in berlin, and she has to escape...

To shanghai

To end up in new york.

It's the end of the '30s, the '40s.

And you can see in the back

A few samples of it.

I will say

That no designer in history

Understands how to work with prints and different colors

The way that diane von furstenberg does.

And so that's why

You will go to the sample room

And you'll be able to pick out

Some of my fabrics.

As I go through diane von furstenberg's look book,

I notice how a lot of her looks are layered.

And so it was a great opportunity

To do two or three pieces.

But we have a 12:00 deadline.

So this is gonna be definitely a tight one.

Is everyone doing three pieces?

-You making a dress? -Yeah.

I'm making a jacket, a top, and a skirt.

That's crazy.

I just wanna get a really, really good dress together,

Inspired by 1940s shanghai,

And not try to do three horribly crafted pieces.

In less than nine hours.

You're quiet over there, suede. You all right?

Yep.

Are you doing a vest too?

Yeah, I was gonna do a jacket,

But it was too much.

There's too much pressure.

I am focusing my look on berlin

And camouflage,

Masculine-inspired fabrics.

Suede is just focused on what suede is here to do.

And hoping that diane von furstenberg adores it.

I am surprised you chose black

With all of that color happening.

I'm thinking about putting this in her hair.

[Laughter]

Yeah.

You might wanna step back.

You might need to use editing.

I have yours.

I wanna win so bad.

Like, I've been on the chopping block before,

And, you know, I'm known to just kind of

Throw up the hot, you know, the neon colors.

And so I kind of want to give more of a basic silhouette,

Like a spire undercover or something.

But I'm a risk taker, and, you know,

I like to show versatility and not just another

Pair of the same pants.

Like somebody else does.

These are great fitting.

I believe I could win this challenge,

Because it's a lot of androgynous wear,

And that's my entire look.

She's a spy, and she's trying

To keep her cover.

And I'm gonna make the coat and then the shirt

And the vest.

As of right now, pants are done.

Aren't these great?

I love the fabric.

And it's sewn very well.

And it has stretch to it,

So it's really good and...

Looks like a pant.

What is this fabric?

It's fireworks.

Why did she pick fireworks?



The perception with terri is that

She just keeps pulling out the same look.

I mean, it's the same tired, one-trick pony act

With the blazer and the pant.

Which is pretty much the story of this traveling woman

Who's kind of a spy, she's kind of glamorous.

She goes from, like, berlin to shanghai to new york.

And I'm working on a jacket,

A turtleneck, gloves,

And an a-line skirt.



Critiquing your work tomorrow.

You actually really, really, really want.

So my design is a beautiful, flowing evening dress.

I want it to be something that's chic,

So I'm making three pieces:

A cape, a vest, and a pair of pants.

I decided to do a backless, oriental-inspired top.

So it's essentially a shirt, but it wraps around the back.

And I like the direction that I'm going in.

I believe that I can make it all the way through

As a top contender for this competition.

I kind of wish it didn't have stretch,

But...it's the color that I want.

My design is a cropped trench coat

With a long silk gown.

I'm really not so much a femme fatale,

Sad to say.

I've actually never been out of the country,

So I have had no foreign affairs.

I would love to be a spy.

Secret agent leanimal.

And I would hunt everybody down,

Like an animal.

I'm a spy!

But maybe you're a performer

As well.

Suede would love to be a spy,

But I'm fearful that my blue hair

Might give me away.

I love the fabric.

Actually, I had to work with this fabric,

'Cause there was only a yard and a half.

I'm like, I'm gonna make this work

'Cause I'm obsessed with this print.



But at least I'm gonna stand out the most.

Rather than something that looks completely

Half-assed.

And, um, I thought this kind of like

Gave a camouflagey feeling.

I will tell you this: visually,

I'm not getting it.

It wasn't sexy enough,

So what I did is, I'm adding this little, like--

-Well, yeah-- -it's actually a separate piece?

-It's gonna be all one. -Okay.

Just think about the shape

Of the vest to the dress.

And just be careful there isn't too much fullness

The dress has such a sublime shape.

By comparison, this jacket is looking too long.

I did played with putting some more yellow under--

Yeah.

I thought of even putting the yellow under here.

There, I respond positively.

'Cause I really love my yellow.

You know, it's growing on me the more I look at it.

But I don't know whether that's a good thing or a bad thing.

The last challenge, the big objection was

That the skirt and the little biker vest top,

They didn't find them to be cohesive.

I think they were clueless,

Because they weren't open-minded.

And I think the stylist with the oversized muumuu dress

And the waistband didn't know any better.

We mean that only in the nicest way.

No, I don't. I really mean it.

I mean, to be able to design a garment

I like it wide kind.

It's kind of, like, fancy.

But then you gotta think about who the guest judge is.

She's really...

She's not rock and roll.



Is the problems of the vest.

Because of the two-sided fabrics,

And one's heavier than the other.

Everything else to me looks perfect,

And I'm not listening to anything.

I believe that it works well

With diane von furstenberg's theme of foreign affair.

I truly think that this represents me as a designer.

My look has the whole 1930s, 1940s feel about it.

The gown just looks so gorgeous on karalyn,

And she is playing the part of seductress very well.

I'm really happy with what I've done.

Xaviera gets on the runway,

And she is hitting it.

My outfit could either be berlin or new york.

I think diane's gonna love it.

Hopefully, I'll be up there as one of the top three.

Looking at my garment on the runway,

I just have to take both of my hands

And pat myself on the back.

I think that the look is something that diane

Could actually use in her collection.

I really think I could win this.

When I see my garment come down, I love it.

It looks just like something I would make.

I wanted to be represented on the runway

As something that's chic, something that's very wearable.

I think I'm gonna do good today.

I am so in awe of my garment.

Diane's gonna love my look.

I saw her giving me a little googly eye when I first met her.

She loves the tan.

So it's in the bag.

I love the silhouette,

But I'm thinking diane might be a little tough.

I mean, this is for her collection.

So I'm kind of nervous.

As I see my garment come down the runway,

I jut think it's sharp and it's slick

And it's bad-a*s.

That garment has a lot of style and class.

My dress is totally shanghai, it's totally chic.

I took a risk by making just one piece,

But this is to sell.

When diane was describing this person,

I thought of freedom,

And out of the spy game

You can relax and just enjoy yourself

And be carefree.

But I also wanted to have little elements of her travels,

Like to shanghai.

Can we see it without the jacket?

I do like the choice of a bright yellow.

-It's very pretty. -Thank you.

I think that the print is captivating.

You do bringing that shanghai influence

And the kind of modern kimono wrap.

It's international, and it's new york.

The little jacket is really nice.

Well, I was very inspired

By the shanghai element

Of, uh, the foreign affair journey.

So I did

A asian-influenced top.

And then I decided

To take a bit of a risk

And do a shawl with a hood.

I don't like the open back.



The hole in the back of the shirt, it looks messy.



Is a little odd in the back.

Because you have the pink belt

That is shorter on one side than on the other.

But then you look further down at the slit of the skirt,

The right side is shorter than the left side.

I don't think that it looks cohesive.

It's just odd.

You know when all the tabloids do the "what was she thinking?"

This could be a "what was she thinking" from behind.

So just don't show your back.

[Laughter]

Just walk out backwards.

Ding, ding, ding.

[Laughter]

Kenley.

I wanted to do something

That I would normally do.

I wanted it to be colorful and chic.

I went with the shanghai look.

The spy look, the musician look.

So I think

I pretty much nailed it.

Do you?

I think it's a very pretty dress.

I think you've made it very well.

But when I looked at diane's look book,

I thought that everything was a bit more about layering.

You did have a lot of layering.

I'm sorry, heidi, I don't want to interrupt you.

I mean, that's what--

I thought that you needed just a dress

Walking down the runway.

And something with a little more color.

So I thought you needed that.

All right, well, I'm glad you figured it out.

[Laughter]

It's a beautiful dress, and it fits her nicely.

But it's not... That difficult, in my eyes.

It's very difficult to tailor this fabric.

It's very easy getting away with just doing one dress.

It's the safe way, in my eyes.

I wanted to do the dress.

I like this dress.

It's simple, it's pretty.

You're true to yourself.

It is actually made beautifully.

And made her a little bit of a shanghai lil.

But it doesn't look like a costume.

Very simple, but very chic.

Of mixing the tweed,

Which is a men's fabric,

With the shiny fabric

That looks a little bit like leather.

But it's not a '40s cape.

A '40s cape goes vertical like that.

This cape goes...

Like a magician's cape.

Yeah, or dracula.

Stella,

The tailoring is just not happening here.

No.

The crotch is just every woman's nightmare

On how a pant would fit.

It's like, "hello."

She's got--she's got something missing,

If you know what I mean.

You have, like, edgy taste.

And I don't look at it and think it has any edge.

And I think that's what you're about as a designer.

It's very slinky,

I think it's a very pretty dress.

When you see the dress from the front.

And that brings a very pretty softness to it.

I'm mad about camouflage,

So I found this fabric which reminded me

Of more of a modern camouflage.

And the dress is very sexy underneath.

Um, when she turns to the back,

It has a really beautiful scoop.

She has no hips at all.

And it's not a flattering skirt.

It's too much fabric at the hips.

Why'd you put a slit in that dress?



Without the slit in the back too.

I thought it would be sexy, 'cause I was trying to take

That entertainment side of it.

But the sexy is that you have--

You have, like, the open back.

That's a bit too much.

I love the idea of a short jacket,

But the herringbone just completely throws me off.

Let's start with kenley.

Kenley is the very simple dress.

It was very pretty dress.

Well-designed, and she fought for it.

She handled the asian influence really beautifully.

I think it met the challenge.

I think the dress had a lot going on, and it worked.

She found a way to take the different influences,

I love the fabric that she picked.

I mean, all the pieces in the design was interesting.

We had some problems with.

Suede.
