invited to a special industry event,

and what they wear will very likely be
their ticket to the future.

- Wow.
- They need to stand out

and be noticed so that agents,
designers, and the press

see not only their
impeccable sense of style

but their ability to wear and sell a look.

Your job is to make certain
that that happens.

At this point,
I'm feeling pretty nervous

that Kojii might have
a completely different style than I do.

Then we're going shopping at Mood,
where you'll have a budget of $100.

This challenge is actually
kind of simple.

I know what Emarie likes.
We have the same aesthetic,

we have the same idea,
and we have the same vibe.

When you go to an event,
you don't have to be

all over-the-top, like, I'm here!

You know?
Just simple, understated.

It's like designing
something for myself if I was a black girl.

You know?

- Fresh?
- Right.

- It should be fresh.
- And not too much.

Like, something that is,
like, simple but interesting.

Not a little girl, but kind of, like,
sexy but not too much.

- Right.
- I want something that will show my body

but not to expose too much.

- I don't want something too big.
- Right.

And if it's long,
then I just want it tight.

- Right.
- Something tight.

My model Matar... Oh, man.
She just had a whole list.

From sexy, romantic, chic,

elegant, classy, fitted, short,

punk, tiger.

I'm, like, wait, wait, wait.

Valerie's concept is is that she wants
something flattering

to show off her curves.

She's gonna be in a room
full of beautiful girls,

so she wants to be able to stand out.

So, we're definitely gonna do,
like, a shorter length.

You definitely don't want
anything long.

So Kalyn walks in,
and she's a bit apprehensive

just because she's not sure
what she wants.

You like having an open back.

Yes. I love my back.

She thinks she wants color,
but then maybe she doesn't.

She's very indecisive,
so I'll have to

coach her into
being comfortable with it.

So it's definitely gonna be you.

There'll be a little bit of quirkiness
of my aesthetic in it.

- No, I want that.

I'm having some thoughts
about this red.

Fatma has a color scheme
in mind that I'm not too wild about.

Red is a little garish
for a model event.

Black and gold
would be better for her.

The model
that I'm working with is Tanisha.

I'm having positive thoughts
about it because

it's just going so smoothly between us,

and I think she comes with
a really great sense of style.

I want, like, a low V-neck back.

Oh, my God.

Are you sure this is good
for this occasion?

I think so.
'Cause I like to stand out.

Whenever I go somewhere,
I wanna make a statement.

I'm just worried, like,
a royal blue and gold jumpsuit

is gonna look like a costume.

Royal blue...
I mean, that's a strong color.

That color makes a statement by itself.

Me and Ebony start talking.

She wants a royal blue satin jumpsuit
with gold rope.

I'm afraid that, like, if you do that

in addition to the entire body
being royal blue,

like, that's gonna be a lot.

I automatically get really scared,

'cause that's not me at all,

and I have to stand by
this garment.

I basically want to show

that I don't want to do,
like, everyday commercial work.

- I want to do the artistic and the edgy.
- Okay.

I wanna step out of everybody's
comfort zone.

Kojii basically tells me

that she wants kind of this 1950s look.

I don't really know that era
as much as she does.

I'm happy with lace or leather.

I haven't worked with lace a whole lot,

but we can play with it.

I think that this is
a really big challenge.

I'm designing new stuff
and pushing myself in different directions.

I decided to go with brown."

I never really design

And then for the belt, I'm thinking
of, um, kind of four times over,

doing, like, a stitch on top of that
to, you know... layering it.

I like it. I don't think it has to look
like a cummerbund.

- I think it can just look like a sash.

It actually might... with the black...

This has definitely
a "wow" factor potential.

It was a really hard critique,
so I scrapped that dress completely.

There's just way too much

I've worked with so many
different celebrities

and different people,
and they trust my judgment,

so why am I so concerned
with this situation

when I know that I wanna
make her look the best she can?

you didn't want a lot of cleavage.

I tend to get a little anxious,

and anxiety is not a good thing
to have when you're designing

because you gotta really just trust your gut.

I swear, this is exactly
what I envisioned.

And I wanted it black.
You get that, too.

This is even more amazing
than I had expected it...

like I had envisioned it.

At this point, I'm just
really trying to focus

on what's important and what
do I need to get done now.

It's just a lot of the little handwork
about the tailoring

that I really want
to have a time to do perfect.

We were all nervous about
our ideas screwing you all up.

As long as I send something
down the runway that I'm proud of,

- then it doesn't really matter.
- Right.

But it's definitely nerve-wracking.

I made her into
kind of this gothic Cinderella.

She loves the look,
but at the same time,

she would go to the party,

and people might be looking at her
for the wrong reasons.

I think the fit in here right now
is beautiful.

My garment is at about 85%.

I still have to do the zipper.
I have to inset the collar.

I have to hem it. Blah, blah, blah.

I am a complete wreck, as usual.

Okay.

The dress is fitting Valerie very nicely.

It's showing off her silhouette.

The only thing
I'm a little concerned about

is that it might be a little too simple.

It would be cute in the front.

In the front? Okay. So I was adding...

I was playing with some of these.

So yeah. I don't know.

Okay.

I mean, if you don't want it,
we can take it off.

You don't want to just use
this material?

My garment is still in pieces,

so she's kind of really hesitant.

For people
who don't know construction,

it's really hard for them to envision it
when it's just in pieces.

But she trusts me and...
I hope she trusts me.

I notice that my garment

is completely different
from everyone else's.

I'm nervous about the runway show.

But this is where a designer
has to really think creatively.

runway show, I come in,

I take one more look over my dress,
which is what I always do,

just to see if I need
to add anything real quick

or if I need
to take anything away.

- A boning hat.
- I love it.

Are you gonna wear it?

Yes, I'm gonna wear it today
on the runway.

If someone was to say, like,
"Make a '50s dress,"

I'd be like, "What?"

It's kind of this mix on 1950s

and, like, Marilyn Manson goth
or something.

Kojii is a little bit different
than most of the other models,

which I like, so she's got
a little bit more of an edge to her.

I pleased my client,
but at the same time,

it's not really my aesthetic,
so I hope the judges like it.

[Ra'mon]
Are you working it out, Qristyl?

Oh, yeah. I'm good.

I'm definitely up against the clock,
but I don't want to just do anything.

But I can do it, and I will do it,

even though I would've preferred
to have done a color.

So, I've made something that
I've never really made before,

and I'm happy that
I am not just playing it safe.

I feel really excited today.

I'm not really nervous

because I'm really confident
in what I made.

- This is so cute.

Most people
were getting dresses made,

and I was getting, like,
a three-piece outfit.

So I know that's
a big challenge for her,

and she really impressed me.

There's still a lot of people
that aren't finished.

No one's really looks like crap.

But I did think Althea's
looked like crap. I mean,

I think it would've looked nicer
if she stapled it together,

to be quite frank.

Oh, my God, it's per...
It's perfect.

I think the people
that are gonna be in the bottom

are definitely Epperson,
because that just looks like a rag.

And then Johnny's garment looks
like he just threw it in a dryer

or just, like, stomped on it,
and it's awful.

Epperson's dress
is one of those dresses

that you could see the judges
hating or loving.

I get it, 'cause I know he likes
to shred pieces and reattach them.

So it's definitely his aesthetic.

It's gonna be...

Only time will tell if the judges get it.

I think hair and makeup
is, like, really important with this dress.

- That looks pretty. Do you like it?

As you know, in fashion,

For this challenge,
the tables were turned.

Usually, your models work for you.

But this week,
you had to work for them.

You had to create a look
that would make them stand out

and be noticed at an industry event.

You had $100 and one day
to put it together.

All right. Let's meet the judges.

First, we have
American designer, Marc Bouwer.

Filling in for Nina Garcia,

we have editor for marie claire magazine
Zoe Glassner.

And award-winning costume designer

and top celebrity stylist,

whose clientele includes Angelina Jolie,

Jenn Rade.

We will score your designs
as they come down the runway.

One of you
will be named the winner,

and one of you will be out.

Let's start the show.

I think my dress
really shows off her curves.

I would've still preferred
a little bit of color on the runway,

but I really feel like this dress
she can rock to an event.

Celine looks absolutely amazing.

Oh, my God.
I actually have a chance of winning this.

She's the only one
that looks extremely chic.

And I tailored it to the T.

It's very much what I do.

And she looks like a lady,
which is what she wanted.

So mission accomplished.

It fits her perfectly.
It's done to perfection.

There are no pins in it or whatever.

So I am confident.

The color looks gorgeous on her.

It's not something that
if they had told me,

"Hey, make an outfit for this model,"

that I would've made,
but the dress looks great.

Kojii's walk is fierce.

So I think that it's definitely a fun look.

I did take a risk, but I'm happy

that I'm pushing myself
in different directions.

Katie walks down with such elation.

It's really exciting to see that she's happy
in the garment I created for her.

My client's idea

with my idea was perfect.

She's romantic and in rough.

I'm like elegant and in jagged edges.

I feel like no one else
is doing what I'm doing here.

She loved everything
about what I put her in.

She wanted to look hot and girly
at the same time,

and that's what I think I did for her.

I am so happy 'cause Tanisha
looks so good in it.

I feel like my client's happy,

and I feel like it definitely
represents me as a designer.

I'm very excited about my dress,

and I think Fatma looks
absolutely stunning in it.

I think the overall presentation
of the dress is really "wow" worthy.

As Vanessa comes out,
I so love it.

Do I think maybe I could've
pushed it further? Maybe.

My goal was to make
something for Lisa

so that when she walks in,

I want people to just turn around
and go, "Wow!"

I nailed it.

I would like to start
with Carol Hannah.

Was it easy to work with her?

Lisa is amazing.

I tried to kind of feel out

what side of her personality
she really wanted to show,

and then I took that
and tried to infuse my style in it.

This is just beautifully ex*cuted.

I mean, the juxtaposition
of the draping

with the sharp-edged skirt
is really beautiful.

I think you did a really great job.

- So well done.
- Thank you.

I think it's really sophisticated
but not stuffy at all.

It's just a good mix
of soft and hard, but still edgy.

It's very cool.

It's really good to hear that y'all see

the juxtaposition
of the soft with the hard

because that's really
kind of the core of my aesthetic.

Did you just say "y'all"?

- That is so cute.

Let's move on to Logan.

Let's hear from your model
what she wanted to look like.

I like lace, I like feathers,
and I think that's what he got.

I wrote down,
"No, cheap, tacky, prom."

- I wrote "prom," too.
- Yeah.

I think it's the mix
with the lace or something...

Well, it doesn't look
like lace on the top there.

- It looks a little thick.
- When I purchased the lace,

and when I got it back
to the workroom,

I looked at it, and it was just this
more of a floral print.

So I actually doubled up
the lace to kind of...

- I think that's the problem...
...to try to get rid of it.

...because it just reads too black.

- Do you like it?
- The silhouette is definitely

a little bit different
than what I normally work with.

I actually almost scratched
this whole idea of the bottom

- and made it into a pencil...
- You totally should have.

I mean, that's a classic example
of you have to listen

- to your first instinct.
- Right.

You're really cute,
and I like your pants and your sneakers.

[Laughter]

I hope that helps me
somewhere, I guess.

Epperson, I would like to know
from Matar what you wanted.

Something that is romantic
and punk at the same time,

and I also wanted something
that is animal inspired.

Why is that? Do you feel like you have
the kitty cat inside of you?

- Right?
- Yeah. I like it to,

you know, kind of tiger...
fit with my hair.

[Bouwer]
I love the dress.

I know how difficult it is
to take stretch fabrics

and appliqué them on top of each other.

- And you did an incredible job.
- Thank you.

I mean, I do a lot of
the lattice mixing over.

But, you know,
with stretch fabric, it was difficult.

You're a craftsman, and it's obvious.

You've taken a simple silhouette,

which we've seen a million times,

and you've given it, literally, a new twist.

Wow. Thank you so much.

I love the dress very much.

I think she looks really sexy in it.

But she needs help up top.

- You know?
- To me, it's okay.

Maybe it's because I've been working
for Victoria's Secret for too long.

For me, they have to be perky,
and they have to be in the right spot.

This says to me, this guy has a concept

She's great, because I think she comes

When you create something in black,
it usually looks much better than color.

You can get away with m*rder.
And I think she succeeded

in making a simple black dress
look kind of cheap.

The challenge was to make
the model stand out

at an industry party,
which she didn't do.

She basically looked like
the girl that was serving your drinks,

where you would be like,
"Excuse me, ma'am.

Can I have another glass of champagne?"

Just ew.

Okay, let's move on to Logan.

I just think she gave him lace,

she gave him '50s,
she gave him feathers.

- He could've done something very cool.
- Yeah.

I mean, that dress was just...

He did get too sucked in to...
by what his model wanted

and kind of, like, lost his way a little bit.

I think that he showed today

something... that he can be edgy.

and that is the true test of someone

who really knows how to make clothes.

you could see the body
on that model the best.
