Michael's going to present you
with your next challenge.

One of the things that's so exciting to see is,
how are designers inspired?

I'm definitely taking a risk here.

I mean, his dress looks like
an Amish woman would wear.

You have this beautiful neckpiece,
but then there is no dress.

Irina, you are the winner
of this challenge.

You gave us a majorly luxe look.

Nicolas, you sadly missed the mark.

I think you got the wrong Greece.

I think you got Grease the movie

with John Travolta
and Olivia Newton-John.

I'm sorry, Nicolas.
That means you're out.

This is Project Runway.

Of course I'm the best.

The search for the next
big fashion designer.

- I have to win.
- I'm in. You're out.

- I'm the best designer here.
- I have no fear.

- Make it work.
- That's my line.

This is my dream.

For these 16 designers,

Project Runway
is the chance of a lifetime.

The winner of Project Runway
will receive

a fashion spread
in marie claire magazine,

a Paris vacation courtesy of Evian,

and $100,000 from L'Oréal Paris

to start their own line.

- There's six left.
- Two boys.

- How did that happen?
- I don't know.

[Logan]
At this point in the competition,

there's six of us left, so I really feel

like it's time for all of us

to step outside
of our comfort zone.

[Christopher]
I've really put out pieces that I like.

- Yep.
- But I gotta get the judges to get it.

During this whole process,
you know,

I've been all over the place.

Congratulations, congratulations,

great work, good work,
fantastic, stunning.

Now sucky. We hate it.

We hate you. You're fat.

I kind of like that there's
so many more girls than boys.

It's nice, because I feel like
the fashion business is so dominated by men.

And that sucks, 'cause I think women
have a very valid point,

especially when it comes
to dressing women.

- [Carol Hannah] Themselves. Yeah.
- You know?

Right now, I feel like the strongest
designers are myself,

Irina, and Carol Hannah.

I think that Logan and Christopher...

they've shown repeatedly
they're, you know,

can't be at the top of this competition.

And I think Gordana as well.

At this point, the judges know
that we all can make clothes.

- Right.
- Now we have really to show

- our imagination as a designer.
- Yeah.

[Carol Hannah] I need to show the judges
I can make more than dresses,

because pretty much
all I've done here is dresses.

And that's my thing,
so that's good.

But it's kind of time
to really do something for runway.

- Ready?
- Yeah.

- You guys are like twins.
- That's a compliment.

- I wanna get to work.
- Let's do it.

[Christopher]
We are doing something very unusual.

We are facing away from the runway,
which we've never done before.

You hear this rustling,
and you have no idea what's going on.

Oh, my God.

It's one of the most
horrifying moments.

- Hello.
- [All] Hi.

Designers, you can turn around.

- Okay, Heidi.
- [Gasps]

We turn around,
and our winning looks are onstage.

[Laughter]

My first thought is, "Oh, gosh,
I hope we don't have to cut them up,"

because I really don't want to.

Well, as you can see here,
you have proven your talent

time and time again.

And this is just a reminder of some
of your best moments on the runway.

Well, your challenge is
to create a companion piece

that complements and enhances
your best look.

I hated sitting there

and seeing all the other
designers' winning looks.

Mine was the only one up there
that wasn't a winning look.

But I'm glad that the judges chose
that piece for me to work with

off the first challenge.

This is a chance for me
to really prove something.

Tim is waiting for you in the workroom

I definitely think this challenge

is gonna point out
where the real talent is

and where, like, the sort of
lucky wins were.

I just think there are
a few people that are still here

that should've gone home.

Afterwards, we're going
shopping at Mood,

where you will have
a budget of $100.

And you have until midnight tonight
to complete your look.

- [Laughter]

It gets harder and harder.

Your 30 minutes to sketch
will start right now. Okay?

Thank you, everyone.

The challenge is to create

a new look that is
based on your best look.

My first look has a paper-bag waist,
and it's a shorter skirt.

And I wanna take that paper-bag waist
and put it on a pair of pants.

And the jacket of the first look
is a play off a man's jacket.

And what I wanna do with that
is really make it big.

I do really like to play
with volume as a designer,

and I don't know if I've gotten to do
that a whole lot in this competition.

I'm happy to be working
with the Aspen look,

because you kind of
have to do a second look

that complements
your first look,

but it has to be
completely different.

So that's sort of
how you build a collection.

My winning look
is the divorcée challenge.

It's kind of like an edgy look.

And I'm imagining
some kind of blazer,

a top, and a pants.

But I'm still deciding
on the pants part.

This challenge,
more than any of the others...

we really have to take
our own inspiration

and take it to the next level.

My winning look
was a shorter dress.

And I find that my strengths
are actually gowns.

And so, I'm given
the opportunity to create

a long version of the original dress
and do a different spin on it.

All right, designers.

Your sketching time is up.
Let's head off to Mood.

All right, everybody.
You have $100 budget,

and you have 30 minutes to shop.

For me, it all begins and ends right here.

All right?
So your 30 minutes begins now.

Go, go, go.

What do I need?

My original concept for my design

is taking some of the zippers
that were in my previous garment

and just multiplying that up.

That, sir, is a zipper.

- I purchased 40 zippers.
- Wow.

She's just gonna have trims
and bits and pieces all over her.

The first thing in my head
is to find the exact same

metallic satin that I used for the top.

But this thought occurs in my head:

"Change it up a little bit."

- [Gasps] This is pretty. Cut this.
- Okay.

I dig through, and I find

this silver version of the same material.

So I decide to get 30 yards.

I'm gonna go big.
I'm gonna go huge.

- Three yards?
- Yes.

So I'm at Mood.
I know exactly what I wanna get,

and then I spot this,
like, really gorgeous fabric.

Designers, you have


So I decide to swap the skirt fabric.

Fifteen minutes, everybody.

I'm actually gonna do a dress instead.

- Here?
- Mm-hmm. That's fine.

- What kind of fabric?
- It doesn't really matter

as long as it looks really rich.

My winning look had a lot of feathers
and a lot of sequins,

and I decided to avoid
both of those completely.

I want to do something
that connects to it

but isn't, like, here's another look
made out of the same crap.

I can't decide between a dress
and, like, a separates combo...

- Let me ask you this.
- I'm more towards dresses, but...

What will sustain you
throughout the course of the day?

- I'm not really a pants person,
- Then do it.

But I haven't made anything else.

In order to take some risks

- and really be uber-creative with this...
- Right.

...you need to be in something
of a comfort zone.

- Okay.
- And if you're out of your zone,

- it's not gonna happen for you, I'm afraid.
- Okay. Okay.

- All right. Does that help?
- Thank you. That helps a lot.

- Good. You go. Go, go, go.
- It helps a ton.

Like, pennies?

Fifty cents. I told you guys,
I'm good at spending money.

My concept is still developing.

You always do this. You always, like,
know exactly what you're doing.

You're just, like, do-do-do-do-do-do-do.
And I, like, lay things out

and, like, do nothing for, like, an hour.

[Carol Hannah]
I have too many ideas, so I'm kind of trying

to wrap my brain around all these things

and figure out exactly what I wanna do.

Coffee.

Right now, I'm really working
with the pattern of the fabric...

placing it in a way that's, like,
flattering to a woman's body.

My first look is about a woman
who's, like, in Aspen,

and she's, you know,
sipping a glass of champagne at the lodge.

The second look is about work.

Not to say it's, like, an office look.

But it's definitely a bit more
sort of clean and polished.

[AIthea]

I like it, 'cause it makes them, like,

- not just black pants.
- Yeah.

My game plan is
I wanna get my pants done first.

Yeah, 'cause look at my sketch.
There's so much more.

They're sort of the most
tailored part of my look,

and I really want these
to be, you know, just perfect.

I'm gonna do a pair of jodhpurs.
Like, chicken thighs.

Oh, Malvin.

- Don't tell me that, 'cause he got elimin...
- It's not a bad thing.

Yeah, but he got eliminated
on those pants.

- Oh...
- Don't tell me that.

Just don't be sensitive.
Please.

Somebody's so sensitive.

[Gordana]
I feel that there is a new energy,

and there is a new tension
a little bit now.

We are so close to the top three

that everybody
is even more careful now.

They don't want to really mess it up.

Everybody's nervous
because nobody wants to go home.

Coming up on Project Runway...

Right now it looks like
it's waiting for a diaper.

I look over,
and Logan's collar is like...

completely has a zipper thing.

Now he's stealing ideas?

Oh, what a disaster.

I'm so pissed.

- [Groans]
- Figured it out yet?

Working on it.

[Christopher]
Now, more than ever, the pressure's on.

One of us is going home,
and it's not one out of



It's one out of six.

[Logan]
Looking around the room,

I've got five other designers
that I'm competing against.

But my chances to get
to Bryant Park, I feel, are good

just because I'm showing
a different point of view.

Just coming from Idaho,
it's kind of a different thing, you know?

I'll go out and work on my car
and get my hands greasy

and then start making a dress.

So it's kind of this
best of both worlds.

[Gordana]
Oh, being top six is unbelievable,

especially with my humble starting.

I am from Bosnia,
but I'm, like, a Bosnian Serb.

My village is on the border
between Serbia and Bosnia.

My parents have no education.
They're just farmers.

And to be where I am today
is just something unbelievable.

I can't decide
where things need to go.

I feel like
these fight each other.

Depends on what you're
trying to do, though.

[Carol Hannah]
Right now, my look is in that weird stage

right before you fully commit
to what you're doing.

You really just wanna make it right.

Too many options.

But that's so hard
when you're this close to Bryant Park.

I'm going to commit.

I think.

This is an opportunity for the judges

to see our true personalities.

And I think when my garment

walks down the runway,
they're gonna look at it and go,

"That's a Christopher piece."

[Logan] Christopher goes out
and buys 30 yards of lining,

which is kind of his signature

for a lot of the challenges
is just volume, volume, volume.

- How's your white mountain?
- Mountainous.

[Logan] I don't know
if the judges are sick of it yet.

But some of the fabrics that he buys

just look cheap to me.

Thirty yards.

- Hi, designers.
- Hi, Tim.

I'm here to check in with you.

- Carol Hannah.
- Hello.

- How are you?
- Eh...

- [laughs]
- That doesn't sound good. Talk to me.

I feel like it's a big scary mess.

You're not going to get
an argument from me,

- I hate to tell you.
- No...

And there's a lot of crap
on it right now.

- Because I'm just, like, sticking things on here.
- No, I know.

But I really like this fabric,

and I think the color is really cool.

What happens if this is under that?

- That's cool.
- It's beautiful.

- Now you have a fabulous textile happening.
- Yay.

All right. You just had a major
breakthrough with this.

Okay. I'm gonna make some magic.

- Make magic is right. All right?
- Thank you.

So, Irina.

- How are you?
- I'm good. Talk to me.

I was gonna do a skirt and a top,

and then, as I was checking out,

I found this fabric.

- It's like a tapestry almost.
- It is.

So I decided to do
a really full voluminous sweater

to go with, like, a tiny sort of dress.

Well, Irina, I will say this,

it is completely unexpected.

- In a good way?
- Yeah.

- Okay.
- But...

you need this cardigan.

I do. I think it makes it younger,

- and it makes it more playful.
- I agree.

I'm very excited
about where this can go.

- Thank you.
- Thank you, Tim.

- Christopher.
- [Christopher] Tim.

This was my winning look...

- It's fabulous still.
- Thank you.

And so, I'm trying to revisit that.

Instead of just covering
the whole piece in the texture,

it's just gonna be
around the bottom here

and kind of just a little
couple pieces kind of coming up.

- Can I show you my thoughts?
- Yes, please.

This is youthful,

- vibrant, sexy.
- Mm-hmm.

For me, this looks like her mother.

This doesn't go as well as planned.

And in terms of those appliqués,

I think you have to rethink
the positioning of them.

- You have a lot of work to do.
- I know. And not a lot of time.

- No. All right? I'm gonna leave you alone.

- Hey.

- How are you?
- I really am looking forward

to my model fitting,
because I sort of have

the pants together,

but it's all about proportion on Tanisha.

I'm concerned about the transition
from the tight fit at the bottom

to the volume up at the waistline,

because right now it looks
like it's waiting for a diaper.

I know. The pants are a bit scary right now,
but I do have...

- They're scary.
...a ton of confidence in them, so...

- I have confidence in you, too.
- Yeah.

Because the sketch is stunning.
And if you can pull that off,

- I can see everybody wanting to have it.
- Yeah.

- All right, Althea. Move forward.

So, my main inspiration
off this piece is just to

kind of take the color palette

and the zippers and just
turn up the volume.

That's what you're supposed to do.

I'm using all the zippers for the collar.

I think they'll be a cool, like, glitz

as soon as the lights
hit it on the runway.

[AIthea]
So I look over, and Logan's collar,

like, completely has a zipper thing,

which is like the same collar

that I did in the Christina Aguilera challenge.

This is the heaviest collar known to man.

[AIthea]
I was a little annoyed.

But I personally liked how
I used it better anyway, so...

All right. You still have
a lot of work to do.

There's a lot of refinement.
But this is definitely in the wow category.

- Thank you, Logan.
- Thank you, Tim.

Gordana, talk to me.

- This is my inspiration.
- Mm-hmm.

It's a little bit rock and roll.

It's a little bit industrial.

Mm-hmm. So, how are you
finishing the edges?

Actually, I like the edges like this.

- You do?
- Yeah. I like it like that.

I like the fit.
You know, it's so feminine.

And then I like the roughness of it.

Well, then, you have to just stand by that

as being a major force

in the whole direction of this design.

[AIthea whispering]

And, I mean,
I'm gonna tell you, you're taking risks.

I applaud that.

when I did the first dress,

it took me eight hours to sew on

all of those petals.

I'm getting a little worried.

I think a lot of designers have to worry.

Usually, you know,
I could pick out, like, one or two

that I think might be in trouble.

But at this point,

now that I have a minute
to see what everybody else did,

I think a lot of them
should be worried.

[Logan]
There's just no way for me to, like,

get in between these zippers.

Oh, what a disaster.

and make sure it fits

and tack down the straps
and pick out hair and makeup.

I'm almost, but I like
to tweak, like Tim says.

Even if I'm on the bottom two,
if I'm pushing my design

and pushing my point of view,
that's fine.

We are at the point
in the competition where, you know,

helping out your fellow designers
is kind of tough.

When I want something,
usually I get it.

It's all worth it for me in the end
if you reach your goal.

- Who's taking all the stuff off the machines?
- I don't know.

Irina has the nickname

I wish the judges would come down
on her for something

just to kind of humble her a little bit,

because she's kind of on
a high horse at this point.

your final look together,

[AIthea] I think Carol Hannah
is a really strong designer,

but she's never done pants or a jacket,

and I'm really surprised

the judges haven't labeled her
a one-trick pony.

It's just at this point,
being happy doesn't mean not nervous.

Accentuate the shape of her eye.

I like this challenge.
It's going to showcase

that even though I am 44,

I can still create fashion that's younger.

That looks really edgy.

I think that Gordana is taking
this challenge a bit too literal

just by using a really similar technique
that she used for the wedding challenge.

It reminds me of my grandma's couch.

My grandma has better taste
than that, actually.

- This is how they dressed in the olden days.
- Right.

I've gone as far as I can

with the money and the time
and the challenge.

I've been battered a couple of times
by the judges,

but I keep making it
through to the next round.

I'm meant to be here.

I think people are getting inspired
from other people's works,

but I don't know
how conscious it is.

I was a little frustrated
with Logan 'cause of the collar,

but I don't think
I'm gonna say anything.

Althea's whining about Logan
copying her collar-zipper idea.

Meanwhile, she's copying
my previous look... the Aspen look.

Are you insane, or are you drunk?

You're supposed to get inspiration

from your own look, not from mine.

and after tonight,

there will be five.

This week,
you used your own success

as a starting point.

We asked each of you

to create a companion look

that complements and enhances

one of your best designs
from a previous challenge.

You had $100 and one day
for this challenge.

And I really look forward
to seeing what you've done this week.

Let's meet the judges.

First, we have instructor

at the Fashion Institute
of Design and Merchandising

and Project Runway alumni,
Nick Verreos.

Fashion director for
marie claire magazine, Nina Garcia.

And actress and one of
the faces of L'Oréal,

the ever-fashionable,
Kerry Washington.

We will score your designs
as they come down the runway.

One of you will be named the winner,

and one of you will be out.

Let's start the show.

I like my dress.

I'm happy with the way
that it relates back

to the winning look.

And I love the pockets.

And I think it's really fun.

I think my look does look
really fashion forward.

Of course,

[laughs]
Tanisha looks good.

She always walks so good.

I'm definitely feeling very confident.

As Kojii comes down the runway,
I'm excited.

I think that it's something
that you don't see every day,

so I think that the judges
will be kind of surprised

of what I did.

Seeing my look coming down the runway,

I really love my collar
and the sweater jacket.

I think that it's my favorite part about it.

Kalyn is working my look.

She looks really hot in it.

I love the look that I have created.

I know that maybe now

we don't see that many
long jackets, but we will.

So I'm very confident
in what I have created.

The judges let us know
that it's time to step it up.

My designs have been
stepped up the whole time.

I don't feel like I did
anything safe or simple.

I really pushed it.

There are only six of you remaining,

so we're going to talk
to all of you today.

All right. Christopher,
tell us about your look.

Well, my winning look
that I used to create this

was the red carpet look.

And I had done
some textural elements,

and what I did to bring that
into this piece

was I used some of
the same petal work.

Also, I did a graduated piecing to the petals

where they start smaller
and get larger as they go down.

Nina, what do you think?

I think that in terms of the proportion,

this didn't work at all.

It's so bottom heavy,

it almost looks like
she's a carnival float.

There's a pretty gown in there.

I think that you could've
used some editing

in terms of using all that stuff.

I think the top part of it
is really beautiful.

But the bottom is a little bit...
you took the bed skirt with you.

I don't think that the bedspreads
are necessarily horrible.

I just think it's two different gowns

and that the worlds kind of
don't blend with each other.

There's nothing that unifies
both dresses that are there.

Irina, tell us about your look.

My look has, you know,

the same spirit of my Aspen look,

except that it's, like, an evening look.

It's something she'd
probably wear to, like, dinner

or a c*ck party or, you know,

something that's
a little bit more festive.

I wrote down:
"Very uptown chic."

She just looked like
a former Russian model

who just married a millionaire.

I really love this look.

I could totally see my stylist

yelling at me before leaving the house...

"Make sure you get pictures
with the sweater,

and then take the sweater
off and do pictures."

It's really elegant,

and yet it's also cozy.

It's definitely, you know,

something I would make
a call about if I saw it on the runway.

I think the top...
the coat, the collar is luxe.

The shape is, you know, brilliant.

What I have a real problem with

is the tight brocade dress underneath.

It looks cheap.

Nina's the only one today
that didn't like this.

Because I liked it, too.
So you're three-for-one today.

I actually liked it.
I thought for $100 and one day,

you've done a great job.

Gordana, tell us about your look.

My original dress was edgy,

so I took the inspiration
of the edginess.

I wanted some elegant silhouette.

That's why I added
some leather pieces to the jacket.

So your first look was edgy,

so you decided to make
this look not edgy.

Well, kind of edgy but
with an elegant silhouette.

I don't think this is fun,
fashionable, beautiful...

at all.

The same as what you've done
to this beautiful girl.

Her hair... She just looks
old and drab and sad.

It doesn't feel strong.
It feels very passive to me.

As opposed to making a statement,

it just, kind of,

almost doesn't want to be noticed.

I think between the collar

and the length of that jacket,

it makes the look a little dated.

It looks like an office worker

I mean, you had such a youthful,
beautiful dress before,

- And then this. I'm shocked.

Carol Hannah, tell us about your look.

My winning look was from
the Christina Aguilera

and Bob Mackie challenge.

My previous piece
had a lot of texture in it,

and I wanted to kind of
play off of that.

I think the simplicity makes the dress
kind of delicious.

And the color is really beautiful.

She reminded me of,
like, Ava Gardner.

I love the lightness.

You know what added to the attitude
of lightness were the pockets.

- I really liked having the pockets.
- [Nick] Oh, yeah. Those were great.

[Kerry]
It was really fun.

Okay, Logan.
Tell us about your look.

The look could be
in the same collection,

but this would be more of
kind of the pow...

like, wow piece.

I know that it's
on the brink of costume,

but I think that you could still see it

maybe at the VMAs with Pink wearing it
or something like that.

- [Heidi] What do you think, Nina?
- Um...

[laughing]

It just looks like a, you know,
fashion project from a student.

Your ideas are there,
but the shapes are not right.

I think it's so unflattering.

[Nick]
Looks '80s to me.

It does scream
a little bit Judy Jetson.

- [Kerry] Yeah.
- [Nick] No?

- It has a futuristic feel...
- Doesn't it?

...that, for me, was a little distracting.

Althea, tell us about your look.

The look I was going off of
was a suiting look

that had a paper-bag waist.

And, I think, really, overall,

what's similar with both looks
is just the ease

and sort of casualness of the look

while still having a tailored,

- well-made, nice garment.
- I want it.

I love the pants.
Fabulous.

I think they're genius,
those pants.

- Yeah, I think the sweater's gorgeous.
- [Nick] Yeah.

I think the sweater's just gorgeous.

Now, who had the first idea
of these big... Irina or you?

- Were you guys looking at each other?
- Oh, the big...

- [Nick] Sweaters.
- [Heidi] Yeah.

Well, we sketch completely diff...

I mean, I had...
This was in my original sketch,

and I'm sure hers
was in her original sketch.

[Irina] Well, I did do the knit
in my previous look.

There has been a little bit of,

you know, resemblance
of things in the workroom.

That was surprising to me.

Sometimes that happens when
you're put together in a room.

How do you not realize it when it's, like,
six people in a room?

You know, it's not, like, 20.

It was my original sketch.
I didn't see that and then change the sweat...

You know what I mean?
To look like that.

No, but I love this look.
I think it is a great look.

[Nina] And I love the proportion,
you know? This kind of big,

oversized, comfortable, easy...

You totally communicate
what you're going for, so I liked it.

Let's start with Irina.

I think everything that she designs...

I can actually see people
wearing her clothes.

I thought it was chic.
I really did think, you know, it looked like

the perfect outfit for the perfect
arm candy of a millionaire.

She always is thinking
about making it look luxe.

- Imagine if she had the money.
- Right.

I think it's a beautiful look.

All right.
Let's move on to Althea.

[Nick] I thought
the construction was really good.

- The pants were impeccable.
- [Kerry] And especially this idea

of keeping the look architectural,

but still having it be cozy
and comfortable.

- The model loved it.
- Yeah.

- She felt good in it.
- Yeah. No, that was fabulous.

Let's talk about Carol Hannah.

The c*ck dress.

- [Heidi] Beautiful dress.
- [Kerry] So sweet.

A very, very nice dress.

And Lisa looked great modeling it.

She kept it young and sexy.

The pockets.
That made it also very young.

Yeah. Love those pockets.

The work that she did
with the charmeuse and the chiffon

- was very well done and very refined...
- So beautiful.

...very quiet, very elegant.

- We could all wear that dress.
- Oh, my gosh.

Yes, we could all wear it.

Let's talk about those designers
with the lower scores.

- Let's talk about Logan.
- [Nick groans]

So Space Odyssey 2001.

[Heidi] It was like an outfit for
a music video back in the '80s,

but not even for the lead person.

- The background.
- Yeah.

It just was strange. To me, it was, like...
You know those lizards

that when they're trying to scare people,

- their necks pop out?
- Yeah.

Like an indulgent
fashion student project.

It just didn't...

Last week, I told them,
"Turn up the volume. Who are you?"

And now he's like, "I'm about zippers.

I can put 50 in one outfit."

- He took that advice too literal.
- I know.

All right.
Let's talk about Gordana.

[Nina]
She wanted to do edgy and elegant,

and she couldn't really deliver on that.

- That was the saddest, most drab thing.
- [Laughter]

And maybe it's like a personal thing.

I mean, I was like,
"Okay, the '80s are back. You do it."

Let's talk about Christopher,

- who worked really hard on making...
- I wanted to like this dress.

...a thousand petals.

I know.

I wanted to really like this dress.

Because I liked two-thirds of it,

but the bottom was heavy.

- There's, like, children hiding underneath...
- Terrible.

...the bottom.
- Terrible.

There's a big thing coming out...
I was like, "What is going on?"

The way it hangs, it does not look expensive.
It does look like a bed skirt.

It hangs just like that. He put the bed skirt
around three times, and that's it.

I think this was one of
our toughest decisions.

Right? But we did it.

Okay, let's bring

even though no one wanted me to.

This outfit was sad,

I'm surprised that I'm going home
for taking a risk

that's innovative
and kind of out there.

or 90% of the population.

So, I think that, you know,

the people that see what
I put down the runway, they'll get it.

If they don't, then they don't.

And, you know, I'm not trying
to please everyone.
