Previously on Project Runway...
Your challenge is to create
a companion piece to your best look.
Althea's whining about Logan
copying her collar idea.
Meanwhile, she's copying
my previous look... the Aspen look.
You're supposed to get
inspiration from your own look.
Irina has the nickname
Meana Irina for a reason.
Althea, who had the first idea
of these big sweater jacket?
It was my original sketch.
I definitely don't feel
like I was influenced.
You are the winner
of this challenge.
Logan, your look
was too tricked out.
That means, Logan, you're out.
This is Project Runway.
Of course I'm the best.
The search for the next
big fashion designer.
- I have to win.
- I'm in. You're out.
- I'm the best designer here.
- I have no fear.
- Make it work.
- That's my line.
This is my dream.
For these 16 designers,
Project Runway
is the chance of a lifetime.
The winner of Project Runway
will receive
a fashion spread
in marie claire magazine,
a Paris vacation courtesy of Evian,
and $100,000 from L'Oréal Paris
to start their own line.
Last challenge, girls.
It's getting really rough right now,
and it's getting kind of awkward.
Irina and I aren't really speaking
because she's accused me of copying.
There has been a little bit of resemblance
of things in the workroom.
It was my original sketch.
The last thing I want to do
right now is start an argument
because there's so many
other things to focus on.
So that's just automatic tension.
It's gonna be what it's gonna be.
You know what I mean?
[Irina] I'm very competitive,
and I'm very outspoken.
I always say I won't say anything
behind your back
that I won't say to your face,
I thought Nicolas
was gonna be here,
Ra'mon Lawrence was gonna be here.
It's odd that I'm the last boy standing.
Going through the whole competition
was always about surviving.
And now this is my last challenge.
I want to show something
that I'm absolutely so proud of
for me, for my family,
for my country,
for everybody that I love.
Last challenge.
- Hello.
- [All] Hi.
Are you ready
for your next challenge?
- Yep.
- Yes.
Well, there are only five of you left.
And I don't have to tell you
that Fashion Week is at your fingertips.
[Carol Hannah] Now that we're
one challenge away from Bryant Park,
it's so exciting,
and every time I start thinking about it,
my heart beats really fast.
Your time in Los Angeles is almost over,
so for your last challenge here,
we're sending you to an iconic place
that is rich in culture with priceless views.
Tim is waiting for you
at this impressive place
to fill you in on all the details.
Good luck,
and I'll see you on the runway.
Bye.
[All]
Bye.
[Gordana]
It's so nice to be outside.
[AIthea] Behind me,
I see the ocean, I see hills,
and then in front of me,
I see this, like, amazing building.
It's like, can it get any better?
Good morning to our final five,
and welcome to the Getty Center.
This is the heart of Los Angeles culture.
Designers, during the sixth season
of Project Runway,
we have fully embraced Los Angeles,
and in turn, Los Angeles
has fully embraced us.
And with that in mind,
it is my enormous honor
to introduce the Mayor of Los Angeles,
Antonio Villaraigosa.
Hi, Tim. How are you?
Welcome to Los Angeles,
the place that has inspired folks
from across the nation
and around the world.
[Carol Hannah]
The fact that the mayor
would take the time
to welcome Project Runway
really makes it hit home
that this is a very serious thing.
We're the creative capital
of the nation,
and we're also
leading the way in fashion.
Good luck to all of you.
So for this challenge,
you will use the Getty Center
as a source of inspiration
for a design of your choice.
From the breathtaking views
to the lush garden landscapes
to the staggering architecture
and to the galleries filled with riches.
So you have two days
for this challenge.
We're going to have a 30-minute tour,
then you're going to have
and then we're going shopping
at Mood... our last trip.
And I have a special surprise.
Your models are here
to serve as your muses.
- Hello, ladies.
- [Models] Hello.
So we're going to take a tour.
- All of us.
- Yay.
Come with me.
[Laughter, chatter]
- It does. The little vase.
- Yeah.
Tim gives us our final challenge,
and that is to get
inspired by the Getty,
and that's not gonna be hard.
There's so much to see,
so much to not touch.
It's one of the Bouilles.
- I don't know which one.
- One of them.
Everywhere you look
is just beautiful.
Everything you look at
is just unbelievable,
and I'm so excited to be here.
Oh, my gosh.
I can't stop looking at it.
Designers, you have
and to take in
the rest of the gardens,
the galleries,
the architecture,
the incredible view,
whatever you want.
It's all here for you
for inspiration for this last look.
All right? So your 30 minutes
starts right now.
Enjoy it.
Architecture is...
I mean, I'm just stunned.
It's probably one of my, like,
top three buildings ever.
The silhouette, I think,
definitely has to be tailored...
- Yes.
...with this look.
Very tailored.
There is just so much
inspiration to go off of,
it's kind of overwhelming.
I decided to go back
to the European decorative arts.
There's this big,
beautiful French bed.
It has all this drapery,
and feathers, and fringe.
And that, to me, was the piece
that really stood out.
Kalyn and I looked at
so many amazing paintings.
But we both stopped
at this painting
that said everything
that I wanted to say,
especially with my final look.
"Reveling in the contrast
of marble, tile, silk,
fur, and flesh."
I need that.
[Christopher]
The first thing I see is this fountain.
It's so beautiful,
and it's so organic
with that little plant-like...
that little algae growing on there.
It's fantastic to finally
have the opportunity
to really vocalize
your point of view.
There it is.
My inspiration
is a painting by Monet.
When I saw the painting,
I see these colors,
and it reminded me of Europe,
where I'm from.
So I really wanted to create
that beauty that I have
seen so many times.
- Very light and flowy in a way.
- Yeah.
- It's very spiritual, too.
- Yeah.
Our visit to the Getty Center
was staggering, wasn't it?
- Yes.
- Just incredible.
So, designers,
say goodbye to your models
because you and I
are headed off to Mood.
- Bye.
- Here we go.
Break a leg.
Off we go.
What a day.
All right, designers.
You have a budget of $300,
and you have 30 minutes to shop.
Your time starts now.
In Mood, I'm looking for colors
that I can manipulate
into the flow of the cathedral.
- How are you doing?
- I'm hoping I'm doing good.
- Even though it's costing me my life.
- [Tim laughing]
Qu'est-ce que c'est?
What is this?
Um, it would be an accent.
Trust me.
I do love this.
I found a really cool fur.
Actually, the outside of it
looks like marble
in the painting,
which is really amazing.
[Tim, whispering]
[Carol Hannah]
Um, if you have, like, 7 yards of that.
Carol Hannah, spend all of it.
- I'm going to.
- Good.
If we can cut faster.
[Tim]
Designers, two minutes remain.
- Is anyone listening to me?
- Hoo!
- It's a dress.
- So this would be the whole dress?
This better work.
Designers,
time is up.
So you need to be at the counter
- now.
- Aah!
Carol Hannah.
All right, designers.
This was our last trip to Mood.
So let's give Mood a special goodbye.
Thank you, Mood.
- Thank you, guys.
- Thank you.
Without you,
we couldn't make it.
- [Tim] It's true.
- Literally.
Back to the workroom, everybody.
All right, designers.
It's your last challenge.
This is the challenge
that will determine
who among you will be going
to New York Fashion Week.
Invest more than you ever have
in the success of your own work,
and take risks, okay?
All right.
I will see you later.
Whoo!
This challenge
is really hit-or-miss
because you're drawing inspiration
from a painting.
So there's a lot more pressure.
Heidi will be like,
"You didn't paint the picture on it."
You know, how she
wants to be literally.
For someone like me
who lives in a small town,
to come here and perform
and then to go on to Bryant Park
is unbelievable.
It's "Oh, my God!"
Coming up on Project Runway...
Althea's sort of like King Kong.
She wants to grab everything.
- I think she's just out for blood.
- Oh, yeah.
The tension is really heavy.
It's looking a lot like roadkill.
It's really exciting
to be down to five.
This is it.
This is the end.
And there's a lot more pressure
and a lot more stress.
Just knowing that this is
the last challenge
is a little bit intimidating
but also very gratifying.
Making it to top five is huge,
and now Bryant Park
is so reachable
that it would be really d
isappointing to go home.
The atmosphere in the workroom
is kind of awkward for me.
Irina and Gordana have
sort of become recent friends.
And then Carol Hannah
and Christopher are, like, buddy-buddy.
I don't know.
So I feel kind of alone.
Althea's sort of like King Kong.
She wants to grab everything.
Today, with the table space...
I'm like, "You have three tables.
Do you really need to come"...
Like, I have to see you in front of me.
I have to see you next to me.
But, you know,
Her Highness needs to iron.
Is it just me, or was that whole table thing
a little ridiculous?
Um, I'm gonna go with
"What's the point?"
- I think she's just out for blood.
- Oh, yeah.
The fact that people
are starting to pick at each other
is definitely a sign of how far along
we are in the competition.
You know what they say...
the dogs that bark don't bite.
It's the quiet ones
- you have to be worried about.
- Exactly.
I just think it's silly.
And if people would just
kind of keep to themselves
and do their own work,
I think it would be better for everyone.
[Gordana]
There's other people here.
- You're not that important.
- Smart-a*s.
[Irina]
We're kidding, girls.
We are kidding, though.
We are not, like, fighting.
I don't think y'all are being serious
when you're bickering.
It's just I don't want to listen to it.
Well, too bad, Carol Hannah.
If you don't want to be...
I'm not here to serve you.
[AIthea] Thank God this is
the last challenge
because I really think it would be hard
to make it work for any longer.
My family's from
the Republic of Georgia.
The culture's a bit behind
in the sense that
women aren't the breadwinners
of the family.
My dad thinks I'm ancient.
I'm 26 years old,
and he's just, like, stressed out
that I'm, like, not married.
Getting to Bryant Park
and actually showing my collection
will definitely be a bit of a wake-up call
for my parents that you know what?
Things will happen,
and you just have to be persistent
and keep pushing for it.
- Hi, everybody.
- Hey, Tim.
I'm here to check in with all of you,
and I'm gonna start
with Christopher.
I know your inspiration
was the rock fountain.
That's correct.
The color palette
that I wanted to go on...
this kind of dull gray,
and then spruce it up with,
like, a green that kind of comes through on...
You know, that little algae growing on there
was so beautiful to me.
Then there's gonna be
these angular pieces
- that represent the rock...
- But they look like stalactites.
They're gonna be edged in...
You want the impact of this
to be "Wow! Oh, my God!"
You don't want it to be
a head-scratching response.
And then, it's like
"Christopher, what?"
That happens a lot to me.
Just keep an editing eye upon this.
- How's Carol Hannah?
- Hi.
- So talk to me about what you're doing.
- Okay.
- Um, l...
- Oh, you have a bed.
- Yes. I'm obsessed with this bed.
- Oh, I love this bed.
- I am, too.
- Um, I really wanna replicate
that very ornate texture
that comes out of here.
I thought there were
so many interesting shapes.
And then, the most ornate part
is really gonna come
kind of sweeping down here.
Aagh. What are you doing?
You're going across the bodice?
I think so. Um...
I think it loses the taste,
- and it loses the sophistication.
- Okay.
Don't lose the sophistication.
- Okay.
- All right, Carol Hannah.
- Thank you.
- Thank you.
How's Irina?
Good. Thinking.
So talk to me.
I just really want to do
a very sort of sheer,
fleshy-Iooking...
- Fleshy?
- Fleshy meaning,
like, sort of, like, barely there.
The dresses in the painting
are very diaphanous.
- I mean, you can see through them.
- They are. Yeah.
This doesn't look that way to me. Is it?
Um, it is pretty sheer.
I mean, obviously, I've lined it.
- And then I have...
- This.
It's looking a lot like roadkill.
It worries me.
And seeing it with this,
it's like a post-apocalyptic moment.
So you really need
to make this work, Irina.
Mm-hmm. I do.
Wow, Althea.
[Laughs]
Talk to me.
Well, I was taken away
by the architecture of this place.
What I'm doing is
sort of creating, like, lines,
but using them
in different angles
to try to get that sort of effect
that the building had.
I'm perplexed
over why you chose
that kind of construction
method for this.
Unless you want to go
for a pebbly, puckery effect.
I find that to be troublesome.
In fact, if I squint my eyes,
it's just a panel of puckering.
I hate to tell you.
Bring a critical eye to this,
and be as objective as
you can be in your analysis.
Yeah.
Because this needs work.
Yeah.
Well, Gordana, I have absolutely
no difficulty seeing the painting in this.
You really achieved it.
This was my challenge.
And, uh,
I couldn't tell you
how emotional I am about this painting.
Talk to me.
What is it about the painting...
You are emotional.
[Sighs]
Nobody knows,
but I'm a very spiritual person.
And the colors are so angelic.
I wanted to create something
regardless of the judges.
I wanted to create something
that I'm in love with,
and I'm in love with this.
I never know what
the judges are going to say,
- needless to say.
- Of course. Me, neither.
But I'm really impressed with this.
Thank you very much.
Designers,
I just want to underscore
that while you could all
ascend and succeed,
in a way, you're all at risk.
And I hate saying that.
But it's simply a matter of fact.
Because it is... it's a competition.
And I do believe in each
and every one of you, all right?
So I am sending in your models
for a fitting.
You will have
Use your time well. Okay?
- [Christopher] All right.
- Thank you.
- I'll see you later.
- See you later.
This is our last, like, fitting fitting.
And I've got to get out
these puckers somehow, but I think...
Althea might have a problem.
The fabric that she's chosen
is not the best fabric to choose
because it puckers
and it shows every
single one of them.
- What's the difference of here versus here?
- I don't know.
- I'm hoping it's just the ironing.
- That's what I'm thinking.
I like where she's going.
I just hope she gets there.
Do you think I'm scared?
- Yeah.
- Why?
Because I'm the odd duck of the group.
I get it. Like...
Like, there's no illusion.
I know my place
in this competition.
I'm the wacky, weird guy
who doesn't listen
and just does whatever
the hell he wants to do.
And it almost got me
thrown off a couple of times.
But I'm still here,
and I'm gonna still do my thing.
So after Tim's critique,
I decide that, you know,
I'm not gonna do
the whole fur wrap thing.
I'm gonna take Tim's advice
and invest all of my time into the dress.
There's still a lot of work to be done.
I'm exhausted.
It's, like, only,
like a couple more days.
- You can do anything for a couple days.
- It's not gonna change anything.
Exactly.
Gordana's dress
is a simple silhouette.
The simplicity is beautiful,
and it's a beautiful dress,
but it's not a last-challenge dress.
It's not a "I'm gonna wow the judges
with my skill" dress.
I'm just creating my angel.
I'm so happy you just decided
- to do something that you love.
- Yeah.
Thank you so much.
Aah!
This iron's hot, you guys.
This is the most stressed out
I've ever been on a challenge
- because it's the last one.
- Mm-hmm.
It's just I really want
to go to Fashion Week.
I do think that everyone else
is kind of freaked out.
I think everyone's sort of,
you know,
aiming to please.
No one wants to go home.
Coming up on Project Runway...
I am so nervous.
- I have to do what's right for me.
- Yeah.
Christopher is very confident,
but it's a false confidence.
This one has to be amazing.
Designers and models, this is it.
[Gibberish]
There's a lot of pressure
with this challenge,
even greater than some
of the other challenges,
because we're one step
away from Fashion Week.
This one has to be amazing.
You know, I woke up,
and I got really nervous.
I think because
it's just the last one.
You feel like you should go out
with something, like, crazy.
We've definitely learned by this point
that you cannot predict
what the judges are going to think,
how they're going to receive things.
They're deciding the rest of our lives.
I keep, like, saying to myself,
"Well, I mean, there's nothing
I can do right now."
I have done already
what I could have done.
Final runway show
is going to be so important to me.
I have created something
that I'm absolutely proud of.
I mean, hey, I'm here
for the final challenge.
How many people can say that?
All right, girls.
Let's go.
Let's go show them
what we're made of.
- [Laughter]
- Oh, yeah.
I'm feeling kind of overwhelmed.
You know, I've got this skirt
that I really like,
but there's just
so many pattern pieces,
and I'm just hoping
that it all comes together.
Time is pretty scarce
this morning.
I feel like I'm
in an adventure movie,
and I'm running
on one of those bridges,
and I'm running
as fast as I can
before it breaks off completely.
[Gibberish]
Do you not feel a little crazy?
- No.
- No?
- Totally normal?
- Yeah.
- Every day for you?
- Yeah.
Good morning, designers.
It's your last runway show.
I'm about to send in your models.
You have an hour to send them
to the Garnier hair studio
and the L'Oréal Paris makeup room.
And when you're putting
your look together,
use the Macy's accessory wall
thoughtfully.
I'm sending in your models.
- Thank you.
- Thank you.
Good morning.
- How are you?
- Okay.
Wh... Whoa.
I love my dress.
I believe I definitely have hit
the challenge on the target.
Well, I don't want it to fall off you.
- I can take it in another...
- Tighter is better.
My dress encompasses
who I am as a designer.
It's pretty,
and it's kind of dirty.
I think the judges are gonna
see my design aesthetic in this piece,
and they're gonna send me
through to Bryant Park.
[Gordana]
I just want, like, really clean
but dreamy kind of look.
Her piece is really long
and lean and ethereal.
We're kind of going
sort of Brigitte Bardot.
Almost like a sumo wrestler.
[Tim]
Designers,
in 15 minutes,
we are all walking to the runway.
It's that last final runway,
and everything's at stake today.
- I have to do what's right for me.
- Yeah.
Like, you know,
that's why I'm here.
Christopher's very confident,
but it's a false confidence
because he's so in his head
that he just can't see
anything outside of it.
It's got to show.
I just think his look
is gonna really put him
in trouble again.
Irina's design...
You know, it has no tailoring.
It's very loose.
It's flowy.
You know, I don't think
it's ugly by any means.
Definitely not a "Wow,
look at that garment."
- Ooh.
- I'm sorry, honey. Are you okay?
- It's okay.
- I'm so sorry.
Althea's struggling
to finish everything.
I mean, but that's been
the case with her since day 1.
Like, sometimes she does
an okay job with the construction,
but most of the time,
it's really poorly finished.
Designers and models, this is it.
I want to wow those judges.
I want Nina Garcia's stilettos
to blow right off of her feet
and sh**t across the runway.
Coming up on Project Runway...
It's a bit of a mess-fest.
Not so great from the back.
Are you confident in this
as your final challenge look?
- Hello.
- [All] Hi.
Welcome to the runway.
As you know, in fashion,
one day you're in,
and the next day you're out.
There are five of you here,
and after tonight,
there will be three,
and those three will compete
at New York Fashion Week.
For this challenge,
we allowed you
to draw your inspiration
from the Getty Center.
I really look forward
to seeing what you've done.
All right.
Let's meet the judges.
First, we have fashion designer
Cynthia Rowley.
Fashion director
for marie claire magazine,
- Nina Garcia.
- Hi, everyone.
And supermodel and style icon
Cindy Crawford.
- Hi.
- Hi, Cindy.
Thank you.
We will score your designs
as they come down the runway.
Three of you will make it
to New York Fashion Week,
and two of you will be out.
Let's start the show.
Nothing's popping out.
The opening of the seams
are moving pretty nicely.
So I'm feeling good.
It shows that I'm willing to take risks.
And if I do go home today,
it won't because I'm playing it safe.
I feel great when Lisa
comes around the corner
because the dress
looks so good on her.
It definitely creates
that town-and-country look
that I'm going for on this piece.
So I'm really happy.
This time,
I really took a chance.
I found my inspiration in maybe
the most unexpected place.
I hope the judges see this
and see a designer
who deserves to be
at Fashion Week.
Looking at my garment,
it just puts tears in my eyes.
I'm so happy I have created
that look that I wanted
from spiritual level.
My garment represents my soul,
not only my capable hands.
In this challenge,
I wanted to do something different.
I just really want to show them
that there is another side,
and things could
still be sort of subtle
and still have boldness.
It looks great, especially,
like, with inspiration.
It's right what I had envisioned.
We have scored your designs
as they came down the runway.
Three of you will be going
to New York Fashion Week,
and two of you will be out.
All right.
Let's bring out your models.
Althea, tell us about
your inspiration and your look.
I was inspired by the architecture
of the Getty Center.
It's really, like, a lot of parallel lines
that are both vertical
and horizontal,
and then there's these
sort of unexpected curves.
I think you're very brave
to try all that pleating
because that's probably one
of your hardest patterns to make.
It's also very hard to wear.
I definitely see
the architectural inspiration
on the skirt.
It seems a little ambitious, maybe.
It seems that the skirt,
maybe, is a little overworked
and the top is a little underworked.
There's nothing wrong
with an ambitious plan,
but you clearly spent most of your time
trying to finish this bottom
and barely got to the top.
It's a bit of a mess-fest.
I'm a bit shocked
to see this from you today.
I feel like you bit off so much more
than you could chew.
Irina, tell us about
your inspiration and your look.
As Kalyn and I walked
through the galleries,
we were both completely enamored
with the painting
Mischief and Repose.
It was like fur and chiffon
and then these, like,
very fleshy ladies.
You know, I wanted
this sort of very sensual,
beautiful, almost like a goddess gown
with, like, this really tough styling.
I like the back.
I think that's, you know, very pretty.
I think the length is very old lady.
It is.
Cindy, what do you think?
I love the color.
I like the inspiration.
But I felt like the shoes,
to me, were a big disconnect
- because they're so, so heavy...
- Mm-hmm.
...that it takes away from
the lightness of the fabric.
I agree. I wanna take the shoes off
and many more things.
If all that stuff would come off,
- she would look already so much better.
- Can you take it off?
Let's do it.
It's better.
If you're going for simple,
then just make it what it is.
Okay, Gordana, tell us
about your inspiration.
Uh, my inspiration was, uh,
Rouen Cathedral in Morning Light.
And when I saw this painting
by Monet,
everything else disappeared.
I knew right away
that I wanted to work with silk organza
because I wanted
to manipulate the fabric
to almost create, like, brushstrokes
and to create a person
that's almost like angelic,
like, coming out of that cathedral.
I have to tell you
I can absolutely see
the connection
with the painting.
You know,
it's a perfectly made dress.
My concern is that I still wonder
if there is a moment
where you can just
really take a chance.
And a lot of what being a designer is
is taking chances.
I could see myself wearing that.
It looks comfortable,
beautiful, practical.
Can we see the back?
I'm not loving the big,
- chunky zipper in the back.
- Zipper.
Not so great from the back,
- but beautiful from the front.
- Okay.
All right. Carol Hannah,
tell us about your inspiration and your look.
I was inspired by
pretty much the entire European
decorative arts gallery.
Specifically,
this French bed from 1775.
So I really wanted
to replicate the regal,
sophisticated feel from the piece.
Well, I think the fit is fantastic.
I like the detail on the shoulder.
I think it's really pretty.
Originally, when it came out,
I didn't get the inspiration.
I think it's a beautiful,
well-ex*cuted dress.
It's just I don't look at this picture
and then see that dress.
My only concern is that
you are playing it very safe.
It is perfect, but it is
almost a safe perfection.
All right. Christopher.
My inspiration came from
a rock fountain at the Getty.
And where the water
would hit the boulders,
this little hint of algae
would come through... this little green.
And I was inspired
by that color combination
and how natural it was.
I love the top part.
It seems a little bit
heavy on the bottom.
[Heidi]
Is it the wrong fabric?
[Cynthia] It seems like the fabric
is a little bit heavy
for a long skirt like that.
I agree. It's so flattering...
like, the upper part,
but the stiffness of the skirt...
it wasn't, like, moving with her.
The skirt had a life of its own.
Christopher, you're
a very talented designer.
Are you confident in this
as your final challenge look?
This piece speaks more about me
than any other piece
I've put down the runway.
Looking at all the other inspirations,
they were these beautiful
pieces of artwork,
and mine was a rock with algae on it,
and not everybody would see
the beauty in that.
And it's like that's me...
those pieces together.
I'm ruining your dress.
Thank you for sharing
with us, Christopher.
Thank you, Heidi.
Gordana, why do you deserve
to go to Fashion Week?
And which other two designers
should come with you?
When I was growing up,
I was dyeing fabrics in onion peel
and cutting everything possible
I can get my hands on
because we didn't have resources.
And I feel like
if I was in Fashion Week
and I had the time to do it,
I could really create something
that would be totally unique.
As for designer...
who to choose...
I would say Christopher,
because he really wants it so much,
and Irina because she really showed,
week after week,
that she wants it much, too, so...
Althea.
I think consistently,
throughout the competition,
I've really pushed myself.
I've never been in the bottom,
and I have the skills
and the vision to put a really beautiful
collection out there.
As far as who
should come with me,
I think both Carol Hannah
and Irina.
Carol Hannah, why do you
deserve to go to Fashion Week?
I mean, I can go into my whole story
of teaching myself and not going
to school for this, blah, blah, blah.
But it doesn't matter, and it doesn't matter
how much you want it.
When it comes down to it,
I think that I make
beautiful garments
that women want to wear.
And what two designers
should go with you?
I think that Christopher
should be there,
because he has ideas
that are interesting all the time,
and I think that Althea also.
She's sometimes
a little overambitious,
but the things that she does...
they're provoking, so...
Irina.
Um, you know,
my parents are immigrants.
I am, too. I wasn't born in this country,
so, I think, in many ways,
you know, a lot of people
who come here with a dream,
they kind of get lost
'cause it becomes so tough.
So it's okay to dream
as long as you push it
and work on it
and just don't give up.
- So that's why I wanna go.
- And who should go with you?
I've already been called mean.
I don't want to do this.
Um, I think you guys are all great.
But judging on work, I do think
Althea and Gordana.
Christopher.
I haven't had a lot of opportunities
to have success in my life,
and this would truly be
the biggest success so far.
I have to say, in my heart,
Irina deserves to go to Fashion Week.
The other designer
is Carol Hannah.
I think that all of you have given us
a lot to think about today.
We're gonna have a little chat,
and then I'm gonna call you back.
Now you can leave the runway.
Thank you.
I think that they did
really well this week.
It is a very hard last challenge to do
because, normally, I say
"Okay, this is your challenge.
You all have the same thing."
Now the sky was the limit.
I always think that's harder.
You know, some people maybe
over-challenged themself,
but knowing that this was,
like, their last chance to really shine...
Like, I think, for Althea...
Althea's a great designer,
but I think that she
let us down today.
Althea's was a mess
in construction,
and it was unfinished,
but she pushed herself
to go the extra step.
Let's talk about Irina.
I liked the inspiration that she chose,
which is kind of part of it.
And I think she did a really good job
of executing that inspiration.
From the bottom down,
I felt like it was just dowdy.
She has a very clear vision,
and it definitely did
refer to the painting.
Let's talk about Christopher.
He does do these beautiful tops.
But the bottom bit...
it was almost like
a thick jean skirt in a way.
Yeah, that's what I was
thinking when she walked...
I have one of those from,
like, way back when.
It was doubly uncomfortable
with the corset waist,
so it was like all the things
that you don't want to wear.
The thing is, he still doesn't know
that it was the wrong fabric.
He hasn't worked enough
to know what is
the right fabric to choose.
He has the ideas.
It's just that technically,
he's not there yet.
He has a lot of passion.
I mean, he got this far.
He's done beautiful work
over the past few weeks.
Let's talk about Carol Hannah.
Carol Hannah has always
been quite safe.
That was a pretty beautiful,
sophisticated gown she did.
Yep. She does have a bit of class.
I mean, it was impeccably made.
- Out of all of these...
- Yes.
...hers was the standout piece.
Let's talk about Gordana.
I love what she did today.
I mean, for me,
this was the closest to the inspiration.
[Nina]
And one of her best outfits.
Do you think
she's always been edgy?
I just think her aesthetic
is more simple.
Well, here's the other thing
that I don't quite grasp about Gordana.
I don't know who Gordana is
as a designer.
To not know it at this point
is a problem.
It's been hit-and-miss.
I think this is definitely one
of the toughest decisions that we've had.
- Yeah.
- But we've made our decision?
- Yes.
- Yeah.
Let's bring them back out.
Three of you will be going
to Fashion Week,
and two of you will be out.
Three of you will be going
to Fashion Week,
and two of you will be out.
Irina,
you've consistently
performed well this season.
Today was no exception.
You're going to Fashion Week.
You can leave the runway.
Congratulations.
Take care, everyone.
Christopher,
you've really done
some very inspired work,
but we think that you
need more experience.
I'm sorry. You're out.
We really appreciate
that you can see beauty
in the unusual.
Remember,
that is a strength that you have,
and you should never lose that.
Auf Wiedersehen,
Christopher. Bye.
[Christopher]
Thank you.
Not for me.
Are...
No, I'm not going.
Oh, I'm sorry.
Carol Hannah,
we didn't totally understand
the connection
between your look
and your inspiration,
but your dress today
was beautifully made
and true to your point of view.
Carol Hannah,
you're going to Fashion Week.
- Thank you.
- Congratulations.
- You can leave the runway.
- Thanks.
[Irina]
You're going?
Oh.
Althea, Gordana,
one of you will be
going to Fashion Week.
Gordana, while we
very much liked your dress,
we thought that it had
some construction issues,
and we're not sure
that it was spectacular enough
to overcome some of
our reservations about you.
Althea,
you really disappointed us today.
Your look was a mess,
but we do appreciate
that you have confidence
and that you take risks.
Althea,
you're going to Fashion Week.
Congratulations.
You can leave the runway.
Thank you.
- Oh, my God.
- [Carol Hannah] Yeah? Yeah?
- Congratulations.
- Thank you.
Gordana, I'm sorry.
That means you're out.
[No audible dialogue]
We're very impressed
by your journey,
and as you continue to grow,
we see great things ahead for you.
[No audible dialogue]
- Auf Wiedersehen.
- Auf Wiedersehen.
- Bye.
- Bye.
Good luck.
I'm out.
Oh, well.
Well, it was a gorgeous dress.
I have put myself out there.
I have shown people
what I can do.
And if it's time for me to go,
then so be it.
Well, I can't stand this.
I was hoping five of you were going.
We were, too.
So congratulations
to those of you who are.
And, Gordana and Christopher,
I have to send you to the work room
to clean up your spaces.
I'm lucky.
I got to participate
in every challenge.
Sure, I don't get to create a 12-Iook collection
in Fashion Week,
but I created a 12-Iook collection
on the runway.
I don't want to leave from here sad
because I'm not in the top three.
What I want to leave from here
is as a proud person
who came from nowhere
and made it so far.
Next week on Project Runway...
The three of you are going
to New York Fashion Week.
I will be checking in on you
and the development of your collections.
Irina?
- How are you?
- Hi, Tim!
- And it's over a pant?
- It is over a pant. I have made pants.
This will cause a gasp.
She's visiting the Wild West.
[AIthea] I'm so excited to be
in New York City.
It's the Olympics of fashion.
Althea, what would you do without me?
[AIthea] Irina keeps on making
snide comments.
Just, like, shut up.
[Carol Hannah]
I just feel really horrible.
- The poor thing is sick.
- [Together] Oh, no.
- It's contagious.
- Oh, no.
- Really?
- Yeah.
