I know that that's the Met
in front of us,

and I'm super excited

because that is one of the most
inspiring places in the world.

Good morning, designers,

and welcome to
the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

We are standing
in the newly reopened

American wing's
Charles Engelhard Court.

Surrounding us are ten iconic looks

from the curatorial department
of the Costume Institute.

And, as a fashion designer,
the ultimate achievement

it to be part of this collection.

For this challenge,

you will be working in teams of two

to create a high-end signature look,

a look, frankly, that could
fit in with this company.

And in order to ensure your success,

we are giving you $500...

...the highest in the history
of Project Runway.

You'll have two days for this look.

Jay, as the winner of the last challenge,

you are automatically a team leader.

because I'm very good
at delegating responsibilities

and give clear instructions.

by these incredible iconic pieces.

I'm standing, like, this close
to a classic Dior.

There's no glass.
There's no security guards.

And it's just... ah.

See how Madame Gres has done this?

Little beads? I've never been this close
to couture before.

Isn't it thrilling?

I feel like I'm going to cry.

I want our look to be really bold.

I love all the... appliqué work.

This stuff I'm looking at

is just awe-inspiring.

Balenciaga and Dior
both were designers

that I very much looked up to,

so just to sit there
and see that in front of me

is absolutely amazing.

I'm so excited.

Let's go back to Parsons and sketch.

Which tables do you want?

I'm thinking I'm very drapey

and three-dimensional,
soft and organic

- and flowing kind of thing...
- Very much.

...and you are very tailored and precise.
- Exactly.

So I was thinking
combine these two.

This will be black on top.

- Okay, the jacket.
- Yeah.

So the surprise element
will be the yellow.

The yellow.

Tim definitely made sure to tell us
that in the end

the team lead had
the final decision.

And I tell you, Mila has
no problem making decisions.

- I think, like, a bolero.

Janeane and I
want to do two pieces

because we want a look

that is going to be multi-functional.

I think we should really

I really felt like I wanted

because if we get in the bottom,
since he has immunity,

I would be the one to go home,

and so I have to be
the one to defend this.

kind of a dramatic dress
with a large vest over it.

I like this one.

I'm just excited to get
a lot of expensive fabrics.

Gosh, it's awful physical work.

Are you planning on being
able to do this?

No. You do it.

That's going to [bleep] up my pattern.

I like the fact
that it's hard and soft.

I want you to center back first of all.

[Anna] Emilio and I are
paired up together,

and it's a little intimidating for me

that he really is established
as the designer,

versus my relative newness.

Emilio, are you some kind
of secret genius?

He has more of a bold design sense,

and in a way I have sort of a softness
and a certain adaptiveness.

Let's get onto the coat
as soon as we can.

Bear with me because I tend to, like,

really need to, like, digest things.

Mila is a very meticulous worker,
very planned.

She spends a lot of time
pettepatternn making,

so we work a little bit differently.

She's doing a lot of thinking,

and I'm doing a lot of executing.

We were always told that this
should be a team effort.

However, the team leader
does take more responsibility

and is at greater risk.

I don't want it to look
like a Miss America sash, though.

- Are you seeing it right here?
- Yeah.

So the necklace will be attached,

but it's not going to be...

It won't be attached to the skirt.

You're going to cover all this?

I'm not going to do all this work

if you're going to cover it.

It's very difficult to work with Jesse.

I do things less by the book.

He may feel insecure
with my approach.

I'll do the pants.

Just pants?

With Ping, we're always
worried about time.

She's constantly changing ideas,

and things are always evolving.

We got to pick our ideas.

Don't tell me anything anymore.

Let me... l... I'm not used

to wonder about my designs.

I feel like I'm just
trying to rein in the crazy.

The reason why I keep changing

is because you make me
doubt about my design and...

It's not that I'm doubting the vision.

I just want to know that there is one.

a high-end signature look

based on our personal style as designers.

so it's really hard to see

to be able to pull off a cohesive look.

and I'll continue to think
about the entire look.

And then I'll tell you exactly...

So far, it's been great
working with Jonathan.

We're very excited about our look.

He's given me the lead
in the construction of the coat,

and he's making the top
and the pants.

Our color palette

is bright yellow, red, and black,

so at this point I think
that we're designing a gown

for the Vice President of McDonald's.

However, everybody needs a dress.

I'm building a dress

that is about 30 different pieces
that will be pieced together

sort of like origami.

We got two days to do it,

and I think we're going to need
a lot more time.

Today we're ready. We're thinking...

Anthony are like "Sweet.
We got all day

to finish just this little bit
of stitch work,"

and Tim walks in.

Good morning, everybody.

Good morning, Mr. Tim.

Gather around, please, right over here.

I've gathered you together to tell you

that you will be creating
an additional look.

You all know that there
is a mass market customer

who wants to wear fashionable
yet affordable clothes.

So for the second part of this challenge,

you will be creating
what I'm calling a Look for Less,

using 10°/° of the budget you have
for your signature look.

- $50?
- 50 bucks.

I'll go buy some napkins
and paper towels and some hot glue.

I mean, what do you do
with 50 bucks?

And this Look for Less will be derived
from the look of another team.

- What?
- [Laughing]

The key word here is derivation.

You are designers.
You are not plagiarists.

As I pull each team from the bag,

that team will declare which team's look
they want to work with.

We have Ping and Jesse.

I would say Emilio.

Janeane and Ben.

We'll do Mila and Jonathan's.

- Okay.
- Yeah.

Jay and Maya.

We're going to go
with Ben and Janeane.

Mila and Jonathan.

We have to make another outfit

inspired by another designer's look.

I'm shocked at this point

because we're still not
done with our other look.

Ping's construction is very drapey,

and if we can just
grab a piece of fabric

and drape a pair of beautiful pants.

Jay's and Maya's dress
is very sculptural,

so Anna and I decided

to design an asymmetrical
dress in their colors.

Do the lace at the bottom,

and so the peach right here.

At this point, my mind's
just going "Peach and lace?"

It's like old lady.

Our time frame is horrifying.

We are going to do
a really cute c*ck dress.

I mean, we could put straps on it.

This is their sketches.

We're not copying them,
but making it cheaper.

I'm not copying it.

What I'm saying is we don't
need to do a jacket.

[Jesse] We just sketched together
something that's not too difficult.

I'm just a little worried

because I won't be going shopping,

so I don't know what Ping
is going to come back with.

Now I've got the fabulous,
fabulous fabric.

- [Jesse] I don't even know

the best way to describe it,

but it's a nice hooker

kind of shiny synthetic something.

I can just imagine the judges saying
"This looks cheap."

[Jay]
I'm a little nervous

that we won't be able to finish,

but at the same time, I have immunity,

so there really isn't a lot of pressure.

We've cut the patterns,

and Maya's responsibility
is to sew these pieces together.

Why do you bring your a*s
over here spectating?

- Taking a break.
- Oh.

I secretly wish that I
wasn't working with Jay

because if he didn't have immunity,

he would probably
be working a little harder.

Oh, my God.
We have the skirt pattern.

At this point, Ben and I
have a really solid design,

but it's, like, the first time
from starting the challenge

where I feel really good about the work.

That saves us an hour.

- That's good.
- Yeah.

I'm still cranking out the coat

because it really
needs to be perfectly sewn together.

I love how, like, we haven't even thought

about starting on our second like you.

If you're not making it,
you know it's not getting done.

At this point, the workload
still hasn't changed.

I'm still sewing everything.

Mila's still making the coat.

Now I'm making
the second look as well,

so that is concerning me a little bit.

Yeah, yeah, I'm fine

till people bring me the paper

- and change the game.
- Well, this is ugly.

I'm the type that if you're
not doing it right,

get the hell out of my way

because I will keep
changing it until I'm happy.

If I don't compromise


then you can't seem to find
a middle ground with me.

Seth Aaron is not accustomed

to working with other individuals,

but I knew that slapping
the hell out of Seth Aaron

was probably not the best way
to get the greatest result.

- Mm-mm.
- Mm-hmm.

I'm going to make you write it in blood

because every time
you say you like something

you change it.

Yes.

We made a beautiful
dress for you. Look.

I'm basically running the fittings now

as well as constructing everything.

- Can we look at it just...
- No, no.

I don't think Jesse takes me
seriously as a leader.

everything I said to him.

It was a question
because we're experimenting

because I want to see
my [bleep] dress.

And I think it's very
unprofessional behavior.

But this is very expensive fabric,

This dress truly is couture.

It's mostly hand sewing.

This is our other look,

and we're going to do a blouse

with some pleated detail.

You have so clearly identified

that it's coming from Jesus and Amy.

- I'd say you have the freedom

to do whatever you want with the top.

Well, Papa here has already made

a, um, asymmetric top,

and for whatever reason,

he's decided to abandon it.

If it's on the floor, you abandoned it.

Well, we fit this on our model,

figuring out proper construction.

I want to do the best that I can do,

I was also thinking

we should redo that
dress a little bit, maybe.

I feel Jesse

about his own safety
during this competition

My insecurity about this

but the coat, pretty much.

Mila took everything that might have
been outside of her realm

and put it on me

I know how badly

and I do think she would
sell me out on the runway.

one day you're in,
and the next day you're out.

For this challenge,
you worked in teams.

Your first assignment was to create
a high-end signature look.

Then we gave you a little twist.

We asked you
to create a second look

that was a more affordable
design for $50.

You were asked to use
another team's signature look

for inspiration,

but you were not to copy it.

designer Michael Kors.

[Anthony] The gown is
everything I needed it to be.

The dress is beautiful,

and it speaks greatly
to who I am and what I celebrate.

And that's classic
elegance and beauty.

Amy and I, we're both
really, really happy

about what we have created.

It looks really high fashion.
It looks modern,

and Holly looks amazing in it.

[Mila]
I feel so confident

about the signature look.

I am absolutely thrilled

with the way it turned out.

I feel like this was the first challenge

in which I could truly
express my point of view.

It looked amazing.

[Janeane]
As I see my signature look

walk down the runway,

I'm so satisfied. It's well made,

and I think Brittany looks
really great up there.

[Emilio]
The dress fits like a glove.

We could have been more innovative,

but I'm working with someone

who had very limited experience,

so I had to scale down
just to make sure

that we had a garment
on the runway.

[Maya]
The dress definitely expresses

my voice as a designer

because it's a little bit futuristic,

but yet has sort of an old,
classic Hollywood style to it.

It's kind of one of those dresses

where you either think it's really cool
or you think it's really weird,

so it was a leap of faith for me.

[Ping]
The signature look, it's beautiful.

It's more beautiful than I ever thought.

I think it's very elegant.

[Amy]
So the Look for Less is a great look.

It's a really good interpretation

of Ping and Jesse's outfit,

so I'm excited to see
what the judges think.

[Seth Aaron]
Our Look for Less was well done.

You know, 50 bucks and a few hours,

we did a pretty good job.

But, looking at the judges,

I'm not sure if they're
liking it, hating it,

wanting to burn it, I have no idea.

[Jonathan]
Our second look

is definitely the scaled-down version

of the signature look
that we were inspired by.

We asked Monique
to be bouncy and flirty.

That's exactly what she gave us...

fun and flirty.

[Ben]
We're both, you know,

extremely proud of the Look for Less.

Even though it's not
our particular look,

it's still our work, and it's very cool.

[Anna] The Look for Less,
I'm really confident,

and it looks really sellable.

It's youthful.

It's really a reflection of me.

[Jay]
I like the outfit.

The skirt fits, the top fits,

and the vest is really cute.

I feel like we've both represented

our design aesthetic.

[Jesse]
I think our second look

is not as strong as it could be.

It's not how I would represent myself

if I had the choice.

I wanted to make something

that looked like it could
be in a museum,

something that a collector
would want to have.

It's unique, dramatic.

I think it's really striking.

I particularly like this very bare side

where you cut it very thin.

Feels very modern.

Let's bring out the look

that inspired your Look for Less.

We've really just played
with a lot of,

like, the lines and the curves

and combining those, you know,
two things together.

[Maya]
The whole thing costs $46.

Well, the concept here

was to create an evening ensemble

that was fun yet still elegant.

For me, you guys sold me absolutely
on the signature look.

I think that suit looks amazing.

I think it's kind of
a sportswear inspired.

It's very clean, graphic.

The coat looks fabulous.

that inspired your Look for Less.

We were inspired
by Seth Aaron and Anthony.

We took their gown into
a juniors kind of phase.

First off, any editor would be like,

"A baby doll dress? Forget it."

It could have been something
very, very modern and simple,

and it would have still
been your interpretation of that.

And it probably would have
been a lot stronger.

We did throw around
the idea of a trapeze.

I think we probably
should have gone with our instinct.

The most important
thing as a designer is your instinct.

Listen to your gut.

But kudos. I love the coat,

and I'm happy
to see some separates.

My God, this is how people dress.

about your signature look?

When we went to the museum

and saw all those very famous clothes,

I'm thinking I need
to design something

that's basically timeless.

Can I just see what happens
when she doesn't hold it?

It's a tail, basically.

I just feel like this is
just a bunch of fabric

wrapped around a model.

[Michael]
She's got to stand

like the Statue of Liberty

to wear this dress.

She looks like she had
her little lace negligee on

and you were working on her,
draping some fabric,

and suddenly a bell went off,

and she ran out with the draping fabric.

Let's bring out the look
that inspired you.

[Ping]
I designed the top.

Um, Jesse designed the skirt.

I don't think
anyone designed anything.

I think the only thing

that it has in common
with the original outfit

is that it's got some gray in it.

It's just an ill-fitting, blah dress.

Who did most of the sewing?

I sewed both of the dresses

because I had to teach sewing lessons
while we were working.

You had to teach
sewing lessons to Ping?

Yes.

That's what he meant.

Megan is dying to say something.

She never fit me in this.

So she never really
looked at you in the dress.

Never.

Well, it... it shows.

Anthony, Seth Aaron?

We really love the classic
Dior silhouette,

so that was our foundation
for this gown.

It looks like I'm at the cotillion party
in the South from hell.

Because this is so costumey,
this gown.

I mean, she's in Gone With the Wind.

Ha ha ha!

What would you have done

to have made it more modern
and more forward-thinking?

We can't design it for you.

It's how you translate your inspiration
into your aesthetic.

the look that inspired you.

your Look for Less, please.

We were spending too much time

trying to figure out
how we were going to do the top.

We needed to simplify
and move forward.

That is how much you stand
behind your outfit.

We just had to do something

because we were running out of time.

It looks like kind of
an acetate c*ck dress

on the cheap dress floor.

And you look at
the inspiration, you know...

Yes. It's beautiful.

You could have had a little
bit more see-through-ness.

She a little bit more skin, maybe.

And that's my fault.

They're both really ugly.

Too much
and too much looking back,

as opposed to looking forward.

And I'm surprised, Seth,
you didn't step in.

I did respect he was the leader,

but it was 50-50,

and this is what we ended up with.

And I'm going to stand behind it.

I loved the Look for Less.

It was one of the few outfits

I think that you could
take off the runway.

She looks like lots of girls
would want to look like.

They actually, for $46,

turned out something that looked chic,

had edge to it, and was wearable.

It was all of the above.

And they managed to do it
very, very nicely.

Also designers that we did like
was Mila and Jonathan.

I thought the coat was really exciting,

and it had a real signature to it.

It was unique to my eye.

It looked like it stood out from the crowd.

And it was made beautifully.

Well, I like the idea
that she didn't make a dress.

And it has Mila's signature on it.

It's very her.

Let's talk about Ping's dress.

It was a confusing,
labored cacophony of ideas.

What I don't appreciate

is that she did not pay
any attention whatsoever

to the Look for Less,

but she spends more time
with the signature piece...

And doesn't even fit the other dress.

Let's talk about Anthony
and Seth Aaron.

I feel they were too literal
in their inspiration.

I don't know if it was
clear in their minds

that it was about going to the museum,

being inspired,

but then making
a fashionable dress for today.

It looked costumey.

Needs to go back in the museum.
