I read a quote on the street

Yesterday that said,

"In true art,

The end is always the

Beginning."

This is the true story...

True story.

Of seven strangers...

[Laughter]

Picked to live in a loft...

And have their lives taped...

To find out what happens...

What?

When people stop

Being polite...

Could you get the phone?

And start getting real.

The real world.

[Dog barks]

What does it mean to me

After weeks?

[Laughing] I can't even begin

To explain.

I learned a lot about myself.

It was a constant mirror.

And that's very intense.

I mean, you're constantly--

You're--everything you do

Is being reflected back at you

Instantaneously.

I think one of the problems

With our generation, we're,

Like, afraid to be honest

With ourselves, you know?

And certain people particularly

Showed me, you know, that there

Are people in our generation

Trying to be human beings

And treat other people

As human beings.

It was hoping that I would

Get to meet six very interesting

People.

Dolphins not only sleep

With their parents,

But they're also h*m*,

And they masturbate with

Mackerel.

It was exposure for

The band, obviously.

♪ Sometimes I think that

♪ My mind asleep

♪ Or is it just

♪ Playing tricks on me again

You know, this is all over.

And it's mixed emotions.

I'm glad it's over, in a way,

And, you know, it's really sad

'Cause it'll never be

This way again.

And it's, you know, been such

A huge part of everyone's life.

You don't feel like you've

Of seven people.

You feel very individual.

And everybody really has

A strong personality.

Everybody knows each other.

It's incredible.

And I think when I heard

On the radio that there

Was an audition for an mtv show,

All I was thinking was,

"Yes, here's a chance

For me to get out of birmingham

And, you know, just a ticket

Out, ready to get some kind

Of career going

In the entertainment field."

And that was really all

I was thinking.

And then when I found out

What the show was about,

That was even more interesting.

[Upbeat techno music]



My dancing is, you know,

Something I enjoy.

It lets me be really creative.

But now I don't really

Understand how I'm supposed

To take full advantage of this.

You need to decide where

You want to go, whether

It's gonna be broadway

Or whether it's to do, like,

Television or videos.

Oh, I think it'd be

Television and videos.

I've always thought that

It would be television

And videos, not broadway.

Yeah, okay, but you know

Videos is not that much money.

Right.

I think when I came up here

I had career goals as well

As personal goals.

I feel like I met more

Personal and emotional goals

Than I even wanted.

But at the same time, I

Sacrificed a lot of career

Goals.

Oh, you know, julie's a

Little more, I guess, hip

To certain things that she

Wasn't before,

Not like she wasn't hip

Or anything.

But she--she learned more

About the city and about how

People react.

And, you know, a lot of kind of

Delusions of youth are kind of

Washed away.

We all knew we had weeks,

You know, so you kind of waited

For the time to come,

But at the same time,

We'll miss it--

The area, the people,

You know, the phone calls,

The cat, the dog.

The best thing about it

Was just living,

And we'll miss those type

Of things, but, you know,

I'm not disappointed at all

That I did it,

Not at all.

Probably the thing I like

Most about heather is that,

You know, she's just heather.

You know, like, she just--

She does whatever she wants.

[Belches]

Excuse me.

She doesn't really care,

You know, like, what happens

Or what anybody says to her

Or anything.

She's just heather.

You know, she just does--

You know, she speaks her mind

All the time.

She doesn't care, you know,

What people think.

Eric, why don't you shut

The [bleep] up?

Heather is the general.

Heather's the general,

And she doesn't deal

With all of the other stuff.

You know, you can't deal with--

You can't be a general,

Then don't talk to heather.

I think heather is great.

You know, even with her ideas

And the rules that she lives by,

She's fantastic,

And I have a great time with

Her.

And heather understands a part

Of me, I think, that nobody else

Does.

So what?

Becky confuses me a lot of times

Because I know she wants

To do her music,

But in a funny kind of way,

I really don't know what she's

Doing about it.

And she just seems so weird

About the whole thing.

I just thought it was

Excellent getting to see becky

In her total environment.

She was wonderful.

I didn't understand how anyone

Couldn't just love becky

After that.

Eric, how can you describe

Eric?

Eric's like somebody's brother.

You know what I mean?

Eric is--

It's not that we haven't

Gotten close.

It's just that he's, uh...

I don't know what it is.

It's like eric is--

Eric is eric.

[Pool ba*ls clacking]

There's a lot more to eric

Than his looks.

You know, he is a wonderful

Person.

You know, he's got an incredible

Body and the face

And everything,

But he, just as much,

Is an incredible person

On the inside.

I think that, you know,

He deals with me on a very

Comical kind of level.

He knows that I'm attracted

To men, and, hell, eric--

Everyone should be attracted

To eric.

I mean, forget--dogs, cats,

Men, women.

Whoever.

You can eat my shorts.

I think norm, you know,

He has to--you know, he tells

A lot of--he always has

A lot of stories about

A lot of stuff.

You know, like, every time

You're talking about something,

Norm has got something to say

Or bring some kind of story in.

And we're laying down,

And all of a sudden,

I feel this thing biting

On the back of my neck.

I could do without

A norman story every now

And then for the rest of my

Life.

You know, I could--

I'll spare five minutes--

Well, not even five--

A half hour of my time

Doing something else.

And it's a tick.

And it's got, like, claws

And grabbers and things

To stick into you.

And I'm going, "oh, my god.

It's a tick. It's a tick.

It's a tick."

Well, you know, he goes

To my art opening.

He, you know, would come out

To the house.

He's interested in what I have

To say.

And andre's my friend.

And...

[All laughing]

He's so open.

It's so impressive.

Norman, this is--

This is god talking.

So we can eat.

It was just supposed to be

A simple game where we drew

That we, you know, had either

Written or someone else

Why do you think you were

I think it's obvious why

I was chosen.

But any time you go to andre,

First in the loft?

It's like I know who--

I know who I'd want to,

But then I think about who I

Really want to,

But it would probably be julie.

The real world is just like

A life experience packed

Into three months.

You learn things that you don't

Even want to learn,

Things you don't even want

To hear and things you don't

Even want to see.

And things that are so good,

You know, like,

Me and heather's relationship.

That's wonderful.

We'll, you know, be great

Friends until the day we die.

The best thing about this

Whole experience, I would--

You know, having the friendship

With julie.

That was one of the best things.

Yeah, cutest couple:

People say opposites attract.

You know, and maybe julie,

You know, at times when I need

To be a little bit calmer,

Julie is there.

And the times when she needs

To be more aggressive,

I'm near.

So I don't know how it works.

I really don't know.

Eric, what's the funniest

Thing that happened to you?

Funniest thing you saw

Around here?

Not too many funny things

Have happened.

[Laughing]

Oh, you know what I think

Was probably the funniest night

For me?

Like, not the whole night,

But the night that we went

To limelight.

And when we came back here,

Everybody piled in my bed,

And kevin had to wake up

Real early that morning,

And kev was just screaming.

He was going--he's going,

"Agh!"

Get out of my room!

No, no, no, no.

High drama!

Whoa!

He's so looking like

A skeezer.

Kevin.

He's got his views

And points about things,

And it just seems like

I still don't know what's

Going through his mind.

I'm on the phone with

Somebody from a record company

'Cause I'm desperate to find--

My father ain't no research

All I want is the opportunity

To have an opportunity.

Obviously kevin has a problem

With delivering the important

Message that's behind whatever

It is he's saying.

Enormously.

The way we're taught,

Everything that's bad

Is black and everything

That's good is white.

You know, at times, to get

His point across, he's very

Strong.

You get blacklisted.

You get blackballed.

Often there were mountains

Made out of mole hills.

At least try to understand

Where I'm coming from.

How can you expect me to?

You know, you look back at it,

You say, "well, actually,

This really, really affected me,

You know?

I really learned something

About myself."

The living situation

With the cameras,

That was exactly what I

Expected, but I never expected

That I would become so paranoid

And fearful of...

Agh!

Some of the sweetest people

Behind the cameras.

You know, it was a lot of fun

And everything, but...

It made me extremely paranoid.

I'm eating.

I must be left alone

While I'm eating.

I think it's obvious

With andre's, you know--

He's really involved with his

Band, and he really focuses more

Towards that.

I think andre's learned

That he can venture out

And fit in with other kinds

Of people, where I think

He's, you know, sometimes

Kind of limited

To who he's around

Because of what he does.

I'm not a role model.

I never wanted to be a role

Role models are parents.

They're neighbors who've got

Something good to say.

They're not sports stars.

They're not rock stars.

They're not musicians.

Andre, he is what he is

To be anything else,

And that's so admirable.

We're gonna make a bed

Like the seven dwarfs, right?

They wanted sex

I try to explain to everybody

In our life also.

They were there every day.

And, I mean, you can't--

That they didn't affect us.

But I think that once we did

Get to talking to everybody

And, you know, be friends with

Them, I think it made things

A lot easier on us

And we could talk more freely

About certain things.

Your father beat you,

And he slept with your mother.

Your mom and I like your dad.

I knew you slept with my mom.

I think the real world

Is the best reflection

You could get of reality.

There was nothing set up.

We were all very much real

About everything.

We didn't think about the

Cameras after probably, like,

The first week.

And it's as real as it can be.

[Grunting]

I'm gonna miss everybody

From this whole thing, man.

I mean, the cameramen,

Everybody.

The guy that came to fix

The refrigerator, I'm gonna miss

Him.

I met a lot of great people,

And, you know, think I've made

Some new friends out of this.

You know, some people that

I'm probably gonna, you know,

Keep in touch with

For the rest of my life.

I just can't believe it's over

Already.

I mean, like, this is it.

Like, three months just went by

Like it was, like, two days.

Phew.

The real world is not, you know,

Being someone else, to me.

And I think I learned that

It's really important

To be happy with yourself.

It really is.

And you can deal with anybody

From, you know, just starting

From that point,

You know, being happy

With yourself and loving

Yourself.

I'd just do shows for nothing,

I just thought of something

I hadn't thought about

In the longest time.

What is that?

Well, when I was in first

Grade, we moved out of this

House in grand rapids.

I definitely was neurotic

About how to bring my sexuality

Into six people that I didn't

Know.

Would they treat me differently?

Would I be treated differently?

And I learned that they didn't.

And that was something really

Important to me.

I think that that is something

That gives me strength

And that I'm going to be able

To carry.

I won't be afraid of who I am.

I won't have to think those

Thoughts.

I don't have to think those

Thoughts.

And, you know, this experience,

You know, gave me that.

It was a great experience,

Really was.

Yeah, give me a second.

I'll teach you how to play

The blues.

I think I kind of came in

As a cynic.

You know, very cynical.

I was like, yeah, whatever.

You know, well, I'm .

I'm the oldest one here,

And I've experienced things.

You know, what can they possibly

Teach me, you know?

And that hasn't been the case.

This project kind of shows

The possibilities in this

Society if people are forced

To live in a situation

For a certain period of time,

What can happen, you know,

In terms of us growing

And living and sharing

Together.

I think we'll all stay in

Touch.

I think some will stay in touch

More than others, but I'll

Definitely always want to know

What's going on with them.

I feel like we have a strong

Tie through life now.

There's no way that we're not

Gonna know each other.

And there's really no way

That any of us, I think,

Could not be interested

In what the other one's doing.
