beat me is Joshua, but he has
really bad editing techniques.
I think that's gonna hurt him so
bad.

runway look.

Marie Claire magazine.

This advertorial will feature
a limited edition 2011 color
collection: Colors Take Flight.
This collection is inspired by
the world of birds.
First, we have the c*ck,
which is a very soft, romantic
color palate.
Next, we have the owl, which is
a much more rich deal.
And then we have the Amazon,
which is bright, bold, and
playful.
Lastly, we have the seductive
and very stoic raven, which can
be a very dramatic look.
We wanna give you a little
more incentive.

I am going to pick up nude
chiffons, which I really don't
usually work with, because the
bird just seems to almost be
nude.
It's a raven, so it's really
mostly black, but I definitely
see some purples in it.
I generally don't design in
one color, so designing a solid
look is definitely outside of my
comfort zone.
I'm gonna have to really push
myself in this challenge.

I need probably a stretch,
since I want to make a pant,
like a tight-fitted pant out of
it.
I'm gonna do pants.
And then on top, I want to do a
tailored coat out of organza.

expect, like, a gown covered in
feathers.
I'm not gonna do that.

very different piece for me.
Meaning that it's very

the fabrics, because they kind
of can give me a design idea.

thought it would.

The ideas are, I think, still
forming.
There isn't as much pinned on

I think it's too much.

washes of the color on the eye,
so that actually the makeup will
play the part of the bird.

I think if we really primarily

bit of silver as a highlight
inside the corners to brighten
it so that it's not a black eye.

I wanted to pretty much to
keep her lip the same tone.
This color is a beautiful,
perfect nude.
It's actually lighter than her
color.

And then just gloss it out.
That was easy.
The colors are obviously very
much like the c*ck.
We'll do a darker eye.
It's gonna be a nice contrast to
the romantic quality of the
gown.

room, people aren't lending
advice as much, people aren't--

After I scrapped the green
dress, I knew that I had to

So I reconsider my old fabrics.
And I decided to work on a very
structured circle skirt.
So I'm confident that this skirt

Now it looks fine on the
dress form.

side seams you want, see, but
just stitch it on the outside,

Okay, let's meet the judges.
First, we have CFDA lifetime
achievement award winner,
Michael Kors.

creative director for Calvin

Hello, everyone.
We will score your designs as
they come down the runway.
One of you will be named the
winner, and one of you will

Okay? Let's start the show.
That is hot.
What I like about my look is the
fact that she looks very demure
and rich and fun.
And it just has a lot of
movement.
It is one of my favorite as far
as design and ideas.
Those feathers were worth it.
Yeah.
Oh, my goodness.
I am elated with the way she
looks.
The dress is beautiful.
She is so so statuesque.
I do notice the imperfections,
but hopefully they will not be
to my detriment.
Got a little snafu at the
zipper, but that's okay.
This look that Viktor has
chosen is not my favorite just
because we've seen the
silhouette before, and it's just
a bit voluminous on one side.
So I don't know how that's gonna
appeal to the judges.
Kimberly's look is horrible.
It's kind of like mine, and she
did it in three hours.
It's not even stitched well.
This is a sewing competition,
not a pinning competition.
Kristin looks great in this.
She's beautiful and very
romantic and elegant and
sophisticated, which is what I
like to do.
But the skirt somehow looks too
short, so it's not flowing the
way I really would have liked it
to.
But I thought it looked great.
There's no regrets with this
challenge.
I feel confident about what's
walking down the runway.
The orange dress is very
beautiful, so it's something I'm
really, really proud of.
I'm riding high right now.
I wish guys could wear stuff
like this.
Josh's look is great.
He's just sort of gussied it up
with this flower corsage on the
neckline.
It doesn't need that,
but that's Josh.
I think Bert, he didn't want
to show the color too much.
He wanted to keep it more
hidden, which, in turn, he
produced work that wasn't so
great.
The look is just so
different from anything I've
ever done.
The shadows of the lines are
beautiful, and I'm really,
really, really pleased.
I can't believe it came out of
me.
Lord have mercy.
The jacket fits beautifully
on Megan.
I'm really happy about it.
The pant is really great.
They are sleek and tight.
I'm definitely happy I chose
this look.
I think it's fresh, it's
classic.
It's so gorgeous, and Megan
looks beautiful in it.
I think Laura's is beautiful.
I don't so much like all the
feathering on the neckline.
But it's just a matter of taste
at this point.
Anya did something cool.
I really love the design.
But, construction-wise,
it's frustrating because the
pieces she constructs herself,
you can't sell.

Anya, tell us about your
inspiration and your look.
I really wanted to do
something that was solid,
inspired by the texture of the
raven, and more structured,
and move away from the kind of
work that I've been showing
so far in the competition.
I have to say, Anya, I really
loved your dress.
I think it's really fashion
forward, it's really cool, edgy.
All those names together.
I can also see the raven.
But it's not over the top.
It's not gimmicky.
It doesn't look like a costume.
I think she looks great.
Thank you.
I think that you found the
inspiration, but it's totally
not literal.
Mm-hmm.
And I think the dress is
interesting to look at, but
also, at the same time, quite
flattering.
I think it's an easy-to-wear
dress.
This is probably...
My favorite outfit that you have
produced so far.
You moved away from your comfort
zone, and it turned out really
beautiful, modern, dramatic.
It just looks great.
Francisco, what do you think?
I find it very, uh, very
urban.
There's a sense of goth about
it.
You know, I'm very impressed
with the cut.
I think you did a fantastic job
there.
You really get a sense of bird.
I think it's really great.

You too impressed me, because,
yes, you moved out of your
comfort zone.
I thought that was very
dramatic.
But I do think the feathers and
the tight satin leggings, that's
what I think I didn't
appreciate.
And maybe it was too literal.
I feel like I've seen this
too many times.
I don't love all those ruffles.
It was too birdy.
I think that the pants are so
tight.
You know, they have so many
wrinkles.
For you, it's certainly
edgier than anything we've seen
you do before.
Yeah, I didn't want to do a
dress or a gown because I felt
that that would be expected.
So, um, I really did try to--
No, I appreciate that you
didn't go that route.
Unfortunately, though, it verges
costumey because of that.
I prefer the hair and makeup
that I see on Laura on her
model.
I like the sleekness of it, and
I think the eye makeup's
gorgeous.
The cut of the jacket's
really lovely, really beautiful.
I'm not so keen on the styling.
But I can get the sense, you
know, of your interest with cut.
I can appreciate very much.

And, Laura, you had the lower

Bert, tell us about your look.
We got this short, dumpy
little parrot.
It wasn't my favorite choice.
The only thing I really liked
was the claws, sort of
purpley-gray.
That was my inspiration, was for
that part of the bird.
I like this look.
I'm not, like, in--I'm not gonna
try and ditch my own look.
But it's not my strongest thing
I think I could have done, in
hindsight.
Talk about pageanty.
Mm-hmm.
Wonder Woman, weird.
It has nothing to do with the
joy or the exuberance of the
bird.
Right.
The bustier is cut perfectly.
Perfectly.
But even her hair and makeup,
while I think it's good-looking,
I don't think that it has the
exuberance he went for.
Mm-hmm, I agree to that,
totally.
I don't think the shape is,
uh, felt very new or
interesting.
You weren't very inspired by it.
I think that was the point here.
I thought there was a lack of
confidence, perhaps, you know.
This is a very disappointing
look, Bert.
But I have a feeling colors
aren't your strong suit.
However, the silhouette of this
is what troubles me even more.
Because it does look so generic,
so expected.
Right, I agree.
I know you guys all don't
like the idea of Bert's dress
being kind of gray from the
outside, you know.
I--I thought it was nice when it
opened, then, puff!
There's the color, it's there.
I mean, the element of
surprise I thought was really
interesting.

I like the idea.
It's just the execution, it just
didn't work.

Joshua, tell us about your
look.
I guess it just really
started--I really haven't done,
you know, a challenge that's
shown my draping ability.
I just wanted something that's
very easy and, you know,
beautiful.
And throwing a little bit of...
Me into it.
But nicely.
'Cause my first look is hundreds
of these in green.

Hundreds.
I think that the cut of the
dress is fantastic.
I love the chain detail on the
side over here.
Great.
The dress is beautifully draped.
I love that it doesn't look
worked, which is such a good
thing for you, when something
doesn't look worked.
But then, all of a sudden, she
had to get the "I was drunk in
the Caribbean at a party"
corsage on her shoulder.
I hear what you're saying.
I mean, it's just--
you've got the talent.
You've just gotta hold it in.
I love the fact that you
embraced this...
Minimalism, for you.
[Laughing] Because this is as
minimal as I have seen for you.
It really works very well.
You did it very nicely.
I mean, I love the draping, I
love that it looks very modern.
I mean, that is a really
beautifully cut dress.

references are absolutely not

Kimberly, tell us about your
bird.
What bird did you have?
We had the c*ck.
You know, it was really pretty.
It was very soft.
It was like a really pale ivory
color.
And I just want to do something
different.
You know, show you guys that I
can do, you know, soft and
romantic, 'cause usually I'm
urban and edgy, or, you know.
One of your dress almost
burned, or it burned?
It did get burned, yes.
What happened?
Uh, it...Viktor.
I didn't do it.
I didn't do that on purpose.
You burnt her dress.
No, you didn't.
It was on an iron or
something, and it had a big hole
in it.
So I didn't start this until,
like, three hours before the end
of the day last night.
So you made this dress in
three hours?
Basically, yeah.
This is one of those dresses
that...It's cut so well, it's so
bare, that you think she'll fall
out of it, which is fabulous,
but she doesn't.
I think it's great.
I could live without the pearl
trim.
That got a little mommy-ish to
me.
But I think the cut of this is
fabulous.
I think the look of--
total look, just feels a bit
mature to me.
And that's why I thought perhaps
Viktor's felt a little younger,
maybe a little fresher and more
airy.
But I love the mixture, also.
Is that leather in the
waistband?
Yes.
I think it looks great.
It's incredible that you made
this dress in three hours.
I mean, it's remarkable.
It's fantastic.
I did like yours very much.
However, there is something a
little beauty pageant about it.
I do not like her makeup.
I prefer Viktor's makeup.
But there is something very
seductive about this dress,
and when it walked out, she
looked phenomenal.
Okay, Viktor, tell us about
your inspiration and your look.
I know it's a little literal,
but I just wanted to really be
whimsical and fun with it.
The colors, I think, are
great, and I think your use of
technique of the feather is
fascinating, actually.
Because it really, when she
walked in, it was very light.
It was very romantic.
So I actually liked it very
much.
I think again, both are really,
really beautiful dresses.
You know, Viktor, when I look
at your dress, the work on it is
great.
The colors are gorgeous.
And it--it had a real movement
to it.
But it's so literal to me.
And, as competitors, were you
guys eyeing each other's work?
Yeah?
Yeah, I mean...
Yeah.
They're both beautiful
dresses.
Kimberly, I think that, when you
look up close, you will see a
lot of things that are not done
as well...

I think Viktor's is impeccable.
I just liked yours more.

and it lost its balance.

I don't like it at all.

I have to say, I loved
today's fashion show.
I thought they were very
innovative.
They were all very different.
And also, I think to kind of
team them up, you know, so they
have to battle it out...

And I think today, they really
had that competitive spirit.
It helped.
Anya made a really cool
outfit today.
I mean, the fabric was
amazing.
The madness of it.
And, really, she really
expressed herself in the best
way possible.
Look at the construction on
that dress.
Suddenly, today, she gave us
something hard-edged, urban,
totally out of her comfort zone.
She showed an inspiration that
wasn't so obvious.
Totally.
Which I loved.
Which I liked too.
Well, I love what Joshua did.
I thought the color was great.
It was great.
I love the cut of that dress.
And, you know, it was bold,
bright, fun, playful.
What it was supposed to be.
I like the chain, and also
easy to wear.
Would you wear it, Michael?
Well, I--I happen to be very
much an orange kind of guy.
That was a beautiful dress.
It was gorgeous.
Beautiful dress.
Now, you know, I think that
Kimberly is also trying to
push herself.
This really beautifully cut,
white grecian goddess dress,
which I think took the
inspiration of the c*ck.
I love the fluttering of the
wing.
It works.
And, three hours, it's major
work.
Three hours, she pulled that
together.
And she also stepped out of
her comfort zone.
Normally, she doesn't do these
kind of clothes, either.
I have to say, all the people
today that were in the bottom
were really, really literal in
their designs.
Yeah, that's what happened.
They went to Bert.
It's interesting, because
when I saw Viktor's dress, it
felt less important because, you
know, it was a little
unbalanced, really.
I liked his construction
skills, Viktor.
You know, I think the dress was
made beautifully.
We didn't hate it.
Romantic, certainly.
Fragile, elegant, all of those
things.
I mean, there were really
only two, today, I think, that
we didn't like, and that was
Laura and Bert.
I was very disappointed with
both, but Bert really...
It's like he was wrestling with
the challenge.
And you have this sad, somber,
very kind of run-of-the-mill
gown.
Reptilian corset?
Yeah.
It wasn't exciting, really,
at all.
I quite like the idea of it.
You like the hidden color.
Yeah.
Just not the way it was done.
Because if that was the
expl*si*n, and if that would
have worked out perfectly,
then, yeah.
And Bert basically said,
"I don't like my dress."
I mean, he didn't have a good
relationship with the bird.
Bert's done some amazing
things.
I just think, today, it just
didn't work out.
This wasn't his day.
This wasn't the challenge
for him.
Laura, on the other hand,
talk about literal.
Oof.
I mean, excuse me.
First off, let's start from the
foot up.
Yeah, the skinny legs,
because those are the bird's...
Legs.
"Yeah, and birds have
feathers next to their head.
So I'm gonna put some feathers
on the jacket."
"Then they have a long, black
tail, so I'm gonna put a
gigantic, long tail on it."
Well, I think it was a little
bit unfortunate, really.

And I think she was so literal
in her inspiration.
