Welcome into New York City

and Project Runway Season 11.

This is the road to the
runway.

Before I introduce you to the
season's crop of

talented and determined
designers,

I wanted to let you in on a
little secret.

A secret the designers don't
even know yet.

This season is Project Runway
team.

Those always make me
nauseous.

Yeah, that's right, teams.

Every challenge is a team
challenge

in some form or fashion.

This is how the real-world
works.

Every successful fashion
designer

works as part of a team.

This season, Project Runway is
bringing

that real life element into

the word room for every single
challenge.

In essence, these designers will
be judged by one

another before the critique by
the actual judges.

It takes talent and tenacity to
snag

a cognitive spot on Project
Runway and

the process to get here is
almost as challenging as

making it all the way to New
York Fashion Week.

It all begins with a nationwide
audition process

in which thousands of hopeful

submit their design portfolios
and

home videos for consideration on
the show.

and then I print the cats on
them.

I could accommodate almost
any type of designs.

It doesn't matter if it's for
your little Chihuahua,

I'll design for anything and
anyone.

From that, the most promising
designers

are invited to audition for our
judges.

I'm a bit of a clothing hoarder.

I love how clothes can make you
feel.

These are insanely high. They're
really fun.

I love being taller than people.

This is my favorite leather
jacket.

I bought silver organza and then
I sprayed it all

with varnish and then I would
melt it together.

She is very detailed,
oriented,

and she really thinks about

what's going to make a garment
special.

The ongoing joke it's like,

I can go from zero to a million
in five seconds.

I'm not going to lie.

All of this usually explodes.

Creativity is messy.

I've been calling in my
multicolored jacket,

two colors, eight layers for
sleeve.

I love double layers and all the
details for that.

Describe for me your design
aesthetic.

Clean, pop of detail,

pop of color, but overall very
flattering and fun.

I like that you're adorable,
you're pretty,

and you make pretty clothes that
women can wear and I

understand but you're still
making them take sheet.

Why don't you start out by

telling us a little bit about
yourself?

I've always been creative
like

my mother taught me how to sew

when I was nine years old, I
think.

I just was sewing stuff all the
time.

I started off making things,

stuffed toys, and then graduated
onto Bobby.

With this, I had the pleats done

and then I constructed the
corset

and attached to the skirt in the
silicon metal Lemay.

It was asymmetrical but not
in a way that it was

so in your face asymmetrical.

Lemay can look really cheap and
this does not look cheap.

No, that's it's really
expensive.

Good. It was.

[LAUGHTER].

This is where I do a lot of my
sketching.

I really think a lot of
inspiration from

things that evoke a feeling of
an era.

This is Christian Dior shoes
from the late 50s, I think.

This piece here used to be part
of a dress.

It's being cut a little bit to
fit into this garment.

I've married modern with vintage
here.

Benjamin's construction is
great.

I think he certainly knows how
to make a dress,

if he can do it in the time
constraints,

he could have a good shot.

Well. I don't really recall
seeing

anybody come in with something
like this.

This marriage of this modern
versus

vintage and then this really
unique shapes.

I mean, just this dress alone
really picks my interest.

Now, are you single, dating
anyone?

Love life. Single right now.

Been recovering from awful
relationship, very a*usive.

It kind of a way holds me down a
bit,

but I'm back to myself now and

I'm stronger as well because of
that experience.

For every negative there's a
positive and I

feel like now I'm on my
positive.

Welcome to my home.

This is my studio space.

It's currently in my home,

which is not ideal,

because I find there are a lot
of distractions, dishes,

dogs, La Fonda and of course,
the mailman.

Having an affair at the mailman.

My husband is like, "Oh, what do
you work in on?

I'm like get the [inaudible] out
of here.

I'll show you where I work at
all when I'm done.

The only downside about

this house is the size of my
closet.

With my clothing, personally,

I try to always look the best,

so when I go to a party,

I'm going to look best,

and that's my goal.

Not to look the sluttiest,

just to look the best.

Where are my charts.

I tend to lead.

I get a little leadership,

like, "Oh, I'm going to take
control.

That's just how it's going to
be."

I'm here for the second time
auditioning.

I started out with my long rain
coats,

which is something that I showed
last year

and then I now have a cropped
version.

Yeah, I like the cropped
version.

It's so cute with girls that
don't have

a booty because it really like
[NOISE].

What's your aesthetic?

Geek chic. Geeky girl like
me,

that wants to look good,

but there isn't boobs out, a*s
out clown.

This is a dress that I did a
mark-up of.

Girl, that's very cool.

Very neat.

I do a lot of quilting
details.

Very sweet

Maybe little brown
underneath.

I think she. Has a lot of fun
playing with

different ideas and putting
things

together that shouldn't be
making sense,

but they make sense and she
makes us

believe that they make sense.

myself on being the black sheep.

My Fall collection,

I called it French Medieval Fly
Girl.

I think my general aesthetic is
armor and leather.

But it felt urban at the same
time.

I did a couple of different
variations

of this little peplum top.

I actually really enjoy the
olive peplum top.

As long as Amanda can stick

with her cool combinations and
really push it,

I think she could do really well
on the competition.

I like transposing things.

I like contrast. I like chopping
up lines.

I love anything that's a little
tough.

I just want to dress cool girls.

I love that you have this
rebel less attitude.

I would call her an original.

I think there's a lot of honesty
behind her work

because she is designing for
herself.

She is her own customer.

I will say that I'm very
intrigued.

calling an artist an original is
one of

the highest compliments they can
receive.

These aspiring designers move up
to the elevation

in every way shape and form.

There's some interesting
stuff going on out there.

I just wanted to hit up.

I'm good. Thank you.

I love the parasol and I love
the wig.

I've always been a designer
who

has not ever followed
traditional attire.

I've always tried to push

new fibers new looks using
Native American theme,

but not screaming native.

I'm fun and I really

do have a true vision that is
different.

The circular cape with bridal
organza

the band ends with

turquoise pieces giving it the
modernist look.

My second look is material that
I created

and it is called weathered text.

This is inspired by Coco Chanel.

I love this aesthetic.

It's really cool.

It's something that we've never
seen before.

Here is the fashion gods and
I like that she

wasn't literal with the Natives
American inspiration.

She really has a gift, I think.

She even referenced Chanel,

but her Chanel dress was her
Patricia dress.

This [inaudible] cabinet is

really important to me because
this talks

about how I really became

interested in fashion and
textile design.

This is my wedding dress.

I was married to an artist and
movable starting out,

but his creativity came first.

One day, he said," I love you,

but it's at the point where you

need to choose between career
and marriage.

I can't go further with your
fashion".

I said, I'm going to choose my
career.

To sacrifice my marriage over my
creativity,

I feel for I don't go forward
every single I

loved was just for nothing.

If I were to win Project Runway,

I would finally be the voice,

not only from my creativity,

but for Native Americans.

I really have my heart and soul
in this.

A lot of my
work is knits.

I really think about
transparency.

I like to work with fold
printing,

combining pattern and color.

I'm pretty sure my work is
special.

I started this collection.

It's called Jose, which is my
initials.

This first look I want to show
you

-is this knit cardigan
-I love the color.

this was machine knit by myself
and then this silk top,

It's beaded using this special
technique.

What is your special beading
technique?

No, I don't. This is the
pyramid cardigan,

[OVERLAPPING] my attitude is

to make the coolest stuff that's

ever been on the show and really

go beyond what's been seen.

I would have bought a lot of
the knit pieces,

especially that beaded top, that
was really cool.

For me he's creating wearable
art.

I know a 100 of my friends that
would buy it all up.

You can see I have a slayed
fascination with cats.

There's this magical kittie
lamp.

I have these really cool cat
salt and pepper

shakers they used in miaw when
you turn them

upside down but not anymore,
sadly.

I get all these thrifted
sweaters and then I

print the crazy kitty pattern on
them.

My designs are retro noir,
but very modern.

Freddy Krueger sweater.

It's inspired by [inaudible] my
favorite part

is that you can use this pocket
and the shirt.

It's cool.

Hi, I'm Cindy, I'm a
designer.

This is my house.

This is a piece that I designed
when I was in Paris.

I've been a funeral director
since 1986.

My husband and I own a funeral
home.

I started this collection
designing it in Paris.

Everything I was drawing had the
Eiffel Tower on it.

Who would have thought I'd ever
be

inspired by [inaudible]?

She knows exactly who she is
and

she's not afraid to take

risk and you saw that in her
work.

She showed us a latex coat.

For God's sake, it was perfect.

What do you think you would
bring?

I grew up in Washington
State, near Seattle.

I was the oldest girl.

There wasn't much money and I
learnt to sew at

the age of nine or 10

because I needed to make clothes
for the family.

I need to win [LAUGHTER] in
whatever I do,

I need to win [NOISE] I'm not
coming back next year,

it's too embarrassing to me to

see on the screen Cindy Marla,

Coming from the background
that she came from [LAUGHTER].

director and everything,

This is a molded jacket or

sculptured and shows what I can
do with my tailoring.

I like this because it's taking

the horse hair braid and then
doing something

one is

my favorite with rabbit pairs on
the front.

When it's on, it pumps up like
that.

Beautiful.

Daniel brought in things that
were more draped,

stuff that was a little bit more
Avant-garde.

Things that took a lot of
tailoring.

He brought in things that

showed his different skill sets.

My family is all behind me


My dad was a really,

really, really cool dad.

He was a big fan of mine because
being g*y and being

Hispanic he protected me even
when I

got in trouble.

Being bullied I did drop out of

school in the ninth grade,

and I did have an alcohol and a
drug problem,

but I have no regrets.

Look where I'm at now.

We look at what I've done with
my life.

I'd like to introduce you to my
style.

I love pants, I love suits.

I wear suits all the time.

shoe and I'm

big hat fanatic is just a bad

I like pens, so I carry a purse.

What will it mean to you to
win Project Runaway?

It would be just that dream
that's always been there.

I am a designer,

but to be on that level and to
have that boost,

dessert.

They have a theme nothing yet, I
can do it.

a couple bucks, it's Gianni

way it drapes.

if it's for your shih Tzu,

it doesn't matter if it's for
your hamster.

I do a lot of very fun things

with the lining and so forth.

This dress, it comes in two
different body types,

younger girls like that more.

He really knew how to talk
about

his work and he really knew how
to sell it.

He was a go getter.

That's your typical classic
silhouette,

except for the zipper detail.

James has a very clean
aesthetic.

His construction is there, which
is great.

I like the color, it feels
fresh, it feels now.

basic colors to your more louder
colors.

I have a really big history of

orange suits to like elementary
school.

I used to like getting dressed
up so

much, I was like a little pimp.

I used to get bullied a lot.

I recall my sister

pulling me out of being beat up
by the kid,

because kids just didn't like
what what I was wearing.

Do you think of yourself as a

I always like to win,

but am not like the evil
competitor.

But in the end, if I need to do
better it's for myself.

My name is Layana Aguilar,

I was born in Brazil.

I love to bring happiness to
people so I want

my design to make you feel
confident and beautiful.

This is a jumpsuit and this was
the cheapest fabric.

That's a testament to what a
good designer she is.

She's able to buy this cheap
fabric

and make it look like a million
bucks.

It's the details, I love the
mixture of hard and soft.

I love using leather and of
course,

I love nude and black.

Everything was done by hand,

the pleading, everything.

It took me about four days.

I love it so much.

We saw it in your book, I
think it's gorgeous.

by the cover to scribble me,

are you a girl or a boy and how
do you feel?

I feel very depressed.

After I finished high school,

I got accepted by Parson and I
feel really

myself and this is what I

want to do for the rest of my
life.

So if you look at your study.

This is the dress that I like

most because I took so much time
on it.

Look at the plating detail.

If you're not careful, you can

get sucked into that lifestyle.

bohemian, but very edgy.

think about it with addiction.

I love it.

Utensils are what you

choose to bring into your body,
and if we know,

what we are is what we eat,

it's what are you allowing to
bring into yourself.

That work comes from a dark
place,

but you would never guess it by
looking at it.

It's beautiful work,

it's well thought out, and it's
well ex*cuted.

I feel confident in who I am
and my point of view,

but construction's always been

something I'm insecure about.

clothes.

This is just like little hostel,

little shawty suit that I come
up with.

I see the architecture in it and

I certainly see the tailoring in

You can mold the color, you
can play with it.

I love the fabrication, it so
architectural.

I was born in Hawthorne,

I'm the seventh child on the
seventh day of August,

at 7: 10 in the morning.

So my mom says you're

special because you're three
sevens.

How did you get into fashion?

My grandmother was an
interior decorator.

She gave me this Vogue magazine,
I was seven.

I just sat there and looked at
it, I mean,

just feels like mesmerized.

It's in my blood. I was
sidetracked a little bit,

but it always came back to
fashion.

How were you sidetracked?

I thought I want to go to
seminary school,

[LAUGHTER] thought I got the
call, but I didn't.

It was yeah, wrong number, yeah
busy signal.

I think I got kicked out, right?

[LAUGHTER] My mother took me to
the elders at

the church and had them put me
on the altar and,

put the holy water and oil on my
forehead and pray,

they squeezed my head and try to
pray it away,

try to pray the g*y away
[LAUGHTER].

But it just didn't happen.

I went home and I told my dad
what happened,

and he was upset at my mother.

He's just like, ''You can't do
that''.

I dyed the feathers.

Are they ostrich feathers,
what are they?

Yeah.
Amanda, you got to wear that.

I mean, this has you written

It's really lightweight, here

the road to the runway,

I just said earlier in the show
this year,

our designers are in for a big
surprise.

They're about to find out that

all the challenges will be team
challenges.

Of course, they had no idea this
was coming, but we did.

So during the casting audition,

we asked them how they feel
about working in

a group. Here's what they said.

Those always make me

I like working around other
people, it's nice.

I hate it, because I'm the

who ends up doing all the work.

If I had a bad team member,

I'd just be like, ''You need to

I have to be the leader.

I'm usually the leader

[LAUGHTER] and that's just what
it is.

I'm the leader,

if I decide something,

you have to follow me.

that's

just how it's going to be.

Group working in a team, work
together.

In any competition,

I will always give it 100

I've told myself if I get on,

I'm not going home until I'm at
fashion week.

No one's going to be me,

My customers are somebody you
want to party with,

which is this person that
doesn't really

give a [NOISE] about the
seriousness of life.

I can win Project Runway

because I'm awesome, [LAUGHTER]
joking.

The main focus on my clothes,

I feel like it's a way to make
the woman feel confident.

I am sweet, but I'm very
determined.

Also, I just feel like you guys
are going to get

a lot of ratings because the
people will really like me.

[LAUGHTER].

I take a lot of chance,

a lot of risk, and I constantly
push the envelope.

I'm such a Leo, I'm so
narcissistic

especially when I'm under the
wire,

I don't need other people to
validate what I'm doing.

I can do it and do it, pretty
damn good.

If I'm in it, I'm in it 100
percent,

and I'll do anything to win even

if it's not the nicest thing,
I'm sorry,

it's competition, I'm not going

to share my steamer with you,

you're not my friend, you're the
enemy.

I can tell someone to back
off,

but not in a way that's going to
offend

them or make them upset.

I'm ambitious, I'm motivated,

and I want to show you all at
fashion week.

[LAUGHTER].

Regardless of Project Runway.

No one else's stuff looks
like mine,

which is a plus for me.

I really feel like I could be
great for the show.

I feel like I'm a great
designer,

I think I'm a cool person.

But when [NOISE] are you going
to show. [LAUGHTER].

I make the thing that for the
person that's on the go,

always on the move constantly.

So I design things to evolve
around that.

A lot of people tell me,

I have a very English,

very Italian, very European
style,

hey, that's me.

I can win Project Runway now
because of my experience,

and because of my techniques.

When I'm stressed, I can
either

withdraw or I can be yelling at
everybody around me.

I hope I'm not embarrassed at my
behavior.

Now's the time for me, I can do
it.

I try to mix strong and
sovereignist,

mix it together and it's exotic.

I have to prove it to them that
I can do it.

I will work my butt off.

[LAUGHTER].

Personally, I try to always
look the best,

I mean, that's why I make
clothes.

So when I go to a party,

I'm going to look [NOISE] the
best and that's my goal,

not to look the sluttiest,

look the best, and that's the
goal.

I'm funny, I'm a funny
person.

I'm a funny man. I look at it
this way,

you have to find humor in
everything, in every day life.

Let it be fabric,

let it be cut,

but take it to that little
whimsical place.
